Headline: ‘ISIS operatives in Sinai are receiving medical treatment at Hamas hospitals in Gaza’

Islamic State terrorists in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula have received medical treatment in Gaza Strip hospitals, Maj.-Gen. Yoav Mordechai, the coordinator of government activities in the territories, charged in an interview with online Arabic newspaper Elaph on Monday. “We have received authenticated reports that ISIS members in Sinai entered the Gaza Strip through tunnels in order to receive treatment at Hamas hospitals,” Mordechai said. The ISIS operatives are admitted to Gaza from Sinai through the same tunnels used to smuggle explosives, weapons and other goods on the orders of Hamas’s military wing, he added. Mordechai said that Hamas started allowing the ISIS members in for treatment recently in exchange for money, weapons and goods. The move is an attempt to make up for losses to Hamas’s coffers suffered due to Egypt’s policy of destroying tunnels between Sinai and Gaza, the general said.

We do not have answers this non-acceptable move,” said Abbas. “It is important that I point out that we refuse to even hear of the establishment of a Palestinian state without East Jerusalem. We will not recognize the Jewish State as long as it does not respect the agreements agreed upon. They cannot force us out. For we have a state that is recognized by 137 other countries.”

US President Barack Obama has retracted on his pledge of an extra defense package to compensate Israel for the damage caused its security by the nuclear deal concluded with Iran last year. This flat refusal, reported here by debkafile’s Washington sources, confronted Israeli officials when they met last week with heads of the National Security Council at the White House. Asked to define its new requirements, Israel asked the administration for an additional $1.9 billion, which would have upped the total to $5 billion per annum for the next five years. The officials explained that Israel’s defense bill had been inflated substantially by the new perils looming from the current Middle East wars, and the windfall Iran had gained from the lifting of sanctions for its advanced ballistic missiles programs and for enhancing its allies’ aggressive capacity, especially that of Hizballah. Israel is now beset additionally by adverse Russian military operations in southern Syria and looming ISIS threats on multiple fronts, at a time that the Arab states are stuffing their armories with advanced weapons from Russia and China. The US officials explained that, because of cutbacks in US defense spending, it would not be possible to add a single dollar to Israel’s regular $3.1 billion appropriation. After notifying Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon of this refusal, the Israeli delegation was advised to reduce its application to $900 million. This too was refused. The standing $3.1 billion annual US assistance program for Israel expires at the end of 2016. The negotiations taking place currently were to have covered its extension for ten years. That too is in doubt.

Clashes broke out between ISIS and Nusra Front militants on Lebanon‘s northeast border Monday following several days of relative calm, Hezbollah-affiliated media said. The War Media Center, which monitors fighting in the border Qalamoun area and other parts of Syria where Hezbollah is present, said the clashes broke out in Wadi al-Dibb, on the eastern outskirts of Lebanon‘s Arsal.
At least one fighter was killed and another one wounded, the report added. The fighting is taking place southeast of Qalaat al-Hosn, it said. Nusra and ISIS had engaged in fierce clashes on Arsal’s outskirts since late last month over a territorial dispute that left several militants dead from each group, but the fighting ended about one week ago following a truce. The Lebanese Army has also been striking the militants with artillery fire on the outskirts of Arsal and Ras Baalbek on a nearly daily basis for more than one year. Last week, the army carried out a major operation in Arsal which it said left six ISIS militants dead. Another 16 suspected ISIS fighters were arrested in the raids, one of whom is the prime suspect in last week’s assassination of a police officer.

On Sunday, the UAE, a federation of seven states and one the Middle East’s most important economic centres, said it stands ready to supply ground troops to support and train international coalition soldiers in the war-ravaged country. Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash said boots on the ground are the most effective way to fight ISIS, also known as Daesh. Mr Gargash said: “I think that this has been our position throughout, that a real campaign against Daesh has to include ground elements.” Saudi Arabia has also said it is prepared to take part in ground operations in Syria if the US-led coalition decides to go in that direction. Mr Gargash said UAE’s contribution in terms of manpower would not be particularly large but important nonetheless. The UAE’s top diplomat said: “We are not talking about a thousand troops but we are talking about troops on the ground that will lead the way, that will train, that will support … And I think our position remains the same and we will have to see how this progresses.” In response to Saudi Arabia’s and the UAE’s willingness to send troops to Syria, the Syrian government said it would put up a fight against any country that tries to invade its territory and send the aggressors home “in coffins.”

Headline: ISIS claims car bomb blast in Saudi capital

An explosion damaged a car in the Saudi capital Riyadh on Monday, the Saudi Press Agency reported, an incident ISIS said was caused by a bomb one of its members had affixed to the vehicle. A police spokesman said a citizen had reported that his car had been damaged by a blast on Monday while parked in front of his house in the city’s Al-Azizia district, according to SPA. There were no injuries. Some nearby vehicles also were damaged. In a statement released on the Telegram social messaging platform, ISIS’s Amaq news agency said the blast was caused by a “sticky bomb” attached to the vehicle of a member of the Saudi armed forces, the SITE monitoring service reported. A Saudi interior ministry spokesman was not immediately available for comment.

Saudi air defenses on Monday intercepted a Scud missile fired at Khamis Mushait city where a major airbase is located, the coalition fighting in Yemen said. The interception occurred “this morning at about three o’clock,” Brigadier General Ahmed al-Assiri, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition, told AFP. “They are still targeting the cities,” he said. Roughly 100 kilometres (60 miles) from the Yemeni border, the King Khalid Air Base, near the city of Khamis Mushait, is at the forefront of Saudi-led air operations against Shiite Houthi militias and their allies, elite troops loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh in Yemen. The Saudis have deployed Patriot missile batteries designed to counter tactical ballistic missiles, which have been fired occasionally since March when the Saudi-led coalition began air strikes in support of the Yemeni government after Iran-backed Houthi militias seized much of Yemen. Rocket fire from Yemen and border skirmishes have killed about 90 civilians and soldiers in southern Saudi Arabia since the coalition intervention began.

Syrian rebels have withdrawn from three villages threatened by Russian strikes in the northern province of Aleppo that borders Turkey, allowing Kurdish fighters to overrun them, a monitor said Monday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels abandoned the villages of Aqlamiyah, Deir Jamal and Mareanar on Sunday at the insistence of residents who feared their homes would be bombed. That enabled the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) to move in to seize the three villages, in another setback for the rebels only days after they lost three nearby towns to the Kurds. Aqlamiyah and Mareanar lie near the strategic Minnigh military airbase, held by rebel groups since August 2013. Opposition factions north of Syria’s second city Aleppo have been increasingly stuck “between the pincers” of YPG forces on one side and pro-government fighters on the other, a military source told AFP. After some clashes between rebels and the YPG, residents pressured rebels in some villages to hand over control to the Kurds so that Russian warplanes would not target their homes, Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said.

Syria Headline: Syria regime preparing major Darayya assault: report

Russian officers have been helping the Syrian regime plan a major offensive on the besieged Damascus suburb of Darayya, according to a report published Monday by Turkey’s state media. A media activists based in Darayya told the Anadolu news agency that the Syrian regime had “mobilized around 1,500 fighters, hundreds of whom are from the Shiite militias (Liwa Dhu al-Fiqar and Lebanon’s Hezbollah) to storm the town.” According to Darayya Media Office Director Hussam al-Ahmad, the operation was being supervised by Russian officers “equipped with thermal cameras and modern surveillance planes flying above the town,” which has been besieged by pro-regime forces since November 2012. He added that Syrian government troops “have begun to use modern Russian tanks that we have not been able to identify.” “Opposition forces targeted one of these tanks with five RPG rounds but failed to cause any damage.” The media activist further warned of the potential of a “huge massacre… if regime forces and their allies manage to capture [Darayya].” “Twelve thousand civilians, half of them children, live in the town.” The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Friday that regime forces have now “completely surrounded the town of Darayya” in their bid to storm and capture the rebel stronghold.

Iraq Headline:    Iraq deploying thousands of troops to retake Mosul

The Iraqi army is deploying thousands of soldiers to a northern base in preparation for operations to retake the Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist group’s hub of Mosul, officials said on Monday. ISIS seized Mosul in June 2014 and except for air strikes has held Iraq’s second city largely unopposed for over 18 months as the country’s security forces battled the jihadists in other areas. “Units from the Iraqi army have begun arriving to a military base near the Makhmur district to start launching initial military operations toward Mosul,” a staff brigadier general told AFP on condition of anonymity. “There are three brigades located in that base now,” and their number will eventually reach 4,500 soldiers, the officer said, adding that troops from the 15th and 16th division will take part in operations to retake Mosul. Makhmur lies around 70 kilometers (45 miles) southeast of Mosul. The initial aim is to completely sever ISIS supply lines between Mosul and areas farther south including Hawijah in Kirkuk province and areas near Baiji in Salaheddin, the officer said.

Iraqi security forces have reportedly besieged the IS-held city of Fallujah in western Iraq’s volatile Anbar province. Two IS suicide bombers killed at least 28 Iraqi security personnel during attacks in both Fallujah and Ramadi on Thursday — the same day security forces said they cleared IS fighters from eastern Ramadi’s Sijariya district. On Saturday, two regiments of local Sunni tribal fighters said they repelled an IS assault north of Ramadi, killing dozens of militants, while security forces reportedly killed 18 IS fighters during clearing operations Thursday in the Albu Soda neighborhood of Saqlawiya, north of Fallujah. On Sunday, the Iraqi military said it evacuated IS-blockaded areas of the Hit district, west of Ramadi, removing more than 70 civilians, mainly women and children. Kurdish Headline: ‘Me or terrorists?’ Furious Erdogan tells US to choose between Turkey and Syrian Kurds

Riled by a meeting between a US official and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG), which controls the Syrian town of Kobane, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has told Washington to choose between Turkey and, as he put it, the “terrorists.” A delegation featuring Brett McGurk, the United States’ envoy to the coalition it leads against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL), met the YPG over the last weekend in January. The YPG took full control of Kobane late last June, in what was a powerful symbol of Kurdish resistance. “He [Brett McGurk] visits Kobane at the time of the Geneva talks and is awarded a plaque by a so-called YPG general?” Erdogan told reporters on his plane while returning from a trip to Latin America and Senegal, the Beser Haber newspaper reported.
“How can we trust [you]?” Erdogan said. “Is it me who is your partner, or the terrorists in Kobane?” the Turkish president said, adding that both the PYD and the YPG are “terrorist organizations.” Ankara considers them to be part of the PKK, banned in Turkey as a terrorist group.

At least nine civilians and 16 rebel fighters have been killed as security forces battle militants of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast, the army and the region’s main political party said on Monday. Ten of the 16 rebels killed on Sunday were in Cizre and six were in Sur, the military said on its website, adding that this brought the militants’ total death toll in the two places to 749 since December. A plainclothes police officer was also gunned down on Monday in the town of Yuksekova near the Iraqi border, media reported. In the center of Istanbul, Turkey’s largest city, police used water cannon and tear gas on Monday to break up a protest against the Cizre operations, witnesses said. Several people were detained, Dogan News Agency said. The protest in Istanbul occurred after the HDP called for a march near Taksim Square, the city’s tourism and transportation hub, to draw attention to the situation in Cizre, Dogan said.

The Russian Defense Ministry said it has observed “a growing number of signs of hidden preparation of the Turkish armed forces for active actions on the territory of Syria.” Ankara responded by saying it has the right to protect its security and accused Russia of diverting attention from its own “crimes” in Syria. “They are simply diverting attention from their attacks on civilians as a country already invading Syria. Turkey has all the rights to take any measures to protect its own security,” said a senior official in Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu’s office. The Syrian army advanced toward the Turkish border on Monday in a major offensive backed by Russia and Iran that rebels say now threatens the future of their nearly five-year-old insurrection against President Bashar al-Assad. The Syrian military and its allies were almost five km (3 miles) from the rebel-held town of Tal Rafaat, which has brought them to around 25 km (16 miles) from the Turkish border, the rebels, residents and a conflict monitor said. The assault around the city of Aleppo in northern Syria has prompted tens of thousands to flee toward Turkey, already sheltering more than 2.5 million Syrians. In the last two days escalating Russian bombardment of towns northwest of Aleppo, Anadan and Haritan, brought several thousand more, according to a resident in the town of Azaz. In the face of the aerial onslaught, the United Nations estimated that 31,000 had been “newly displaced” from Aleppo, Anadan and areas of the country controlled by Islamic State, mostly women and children.

Iran wants to recover tens of billions of dollars it is owed by India and other buyers of its oil in euros and is billing new crude sales in euros, too, looking to reduce its dependence on the U.S. dollar following last month’s sanctions relief. A source at state-owned National Iranian Oil Co (NIOC) told Reuters that Iran will charge in euros for its recently signed oil contracts with firms including French oil and gas major Total, Spanish refiner Cepsa and Litasco, the trading arm of Russia’s Lukoil. “In our invoices we mention a clause that buyers of our oil will have to pay in euros, considering the exchange rate versus the dollar around the time of delivery,” the NIOC source said. Lukoil and Total declined to comment, while Cepsa did not respond to a request for comment. Iran has also told its trading partners who owe it billions of dollars that it wants to be paid in euros rather than U.S. dollars, said the person, who has direct knowledge of the matter. Iran was allowed to recover some of the funds frozen under U.S.-led sanctions in currencies other than dollars, such as the Omani rial and UAE dhiram. Switching oil sales to euros makes sense as Europe is now one of Iran’s biggest trading partners.

Two suicide bombers targeting Afghan government and military employees killed at least nine people on Monday and wounded 23, officials said. Six civilians died and nine were injured in a blast outside a bakery shop in Yahyakhil district of Paktika province, an area near Afghanistan’s eastern border with Pakistan, district governor Musa Khan Kharuti said. The suicide bomber apparently targeted police and government employees buying bread, a provincial police official said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Earlier in the day, three people were killed in an attack on a bus carrying Afghan army personnel in Dehdadi district, not far from the Balkh provincial capital of Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence said. The ministry put the number of wounded at eight, while Munir Ahmad Farhad, a spokesman for the Balkh provincial governor, said that 14, including three women, had been injured. The bomber detonated a suicide vest near the bus as it was carrying members of the army’s 209th Shaheen Corps, and all of the reported casualties were army employees, Farhad said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on the military bus in a statement released online.

In Birmingham about 250 supporters of pan-European anti-immigration group PEGIDA faced about 60 pro-refugee demonstrators. PEGIDA supporters carried placards with slogans including ‘Rape Culture is being Imported’ and ‘We will not stay silent as women are raped’. The far-right group even claimed that 100,000 Britons will be marching alongside them “by the end of the year”. PEGIDA leader Paul Weston said: “The next meeting we have is going to be double or treble the numbers. “By the end of this year, and I’m been quite serious, I want to see 100,000 decent people on the street”. Police in Birmingham were also forced to defend the number of officers deployed to the scene in Birmingham, with some protestors calling the response an “overreaction”. A 39-year-old man was arrested at the rally for a public order offence. The mile-long “silent march” in Birmingham was pushed out into the outskirts amid the heavy police deployment. The event was the first to be organised by Tommy Robinson, the founder of the English Defence League.

World leaders have united in anger at North Korea with a promise to hit the rogue state with harsh sanctions after it successfully fired what it claimed to be a satellite into space. Concerns were raised that the launch could have been a ballistic missile rather than a satellite. The Kremlin strongly condemned on Monday North Korea’s latest rocket launch, calling it a violation of the international law. Commenting on reports that Russian components had been used in the rocket launch by North Korea, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: “This is rather a technological question.” He did not elaborate. “Our attitude to this launch … was unambiguously displayed in the full unity of the (United Nations) Security Council,” Peskov told journalists in a conference call. The US and South Korea said formal talks have begun about the deployment of the advance missile defence system which would protect the country from Pyongyang. The launch, which South Korean officials confirmed early on Sunday morning, follows North Korea’s claim last month that it had tested a hydrogen bomb. Amid boasts from Pyongyang that more missile launches would follow, world leaders have condemned the action as an “irresponsible provocation” and urged the United Nations to punish the communist nation.

The region’s banking gauge, the Stoxx Europe 600 Banks Index FX7, -5.59% has logged six straight weeks of declines, its longest weekly losing stretch since 2008, when banks booked 10 weeks of losses, beginning in May, according to FactSet data. “The current environment for European banks is very, very bad. Over a full business cycle, I think it’s very questionable whether banks on average are able to cover their cost of equity. And as a result that makes it an unattractive investment for long-term investors,” warned Peter Garnry, head of equity strategy at Saxo Bank. The doom-and-gloom outlook for banks comes as the stock market has had an ominous start to the year.

His audience was rapt with unusual attention. They could be forgiven for thinking the slump had not already arrived. Commodity prices have crashed by two thirds since their peaks in 2014. Oil has borne the brunt of the sell-off, suffering the worst price collapse in modern history. Brent crude has fallen from $115 a barrel in the summer of 2014, to just $27.70 in mid-January. Major oil price falls have a number of historical precedents. Today’s glutted oil market is often compared to the crash of 1986, the last major episode over global over-supply. Back in the late 90s, a barrel of Brent crude fell to as low as $10 in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. But is the current oil price collapse really like anything the world economy has ever experienced? For many market watchers, a confluence of factors – led by oil, but encompassing China, the emerging world, and financial markets – are all brewing to create a perfect storm in a global economy that has barely come to terms with the Great Recession. “We are in a very unusual situation where market sentiment is of a different nature to anything we’ve seen before,” says Thygesen. Unlike previous pre-recessionary eras, the current sell-off has seen commodity prices, equities and credit conditions all move in dangerous lockstep.

The figures released in a UN report describe some of the worst conditions yet in more than two years of a civil war marked by atrocities and accusations of war crimes, including the blockading of food supplies. Conditions are “escalating”, the UN said, with already over 2.8 million people needing aid, almost a quarter of the country. “Nearly 25 percent of the country’s population remain in urgent need of food assistance, and at least 40,000 people are on the brink of catastrophe,” the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the UN children’s agency UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) said in a joint statement. “Families have been doing everything they can to survive, but they are now running out of options,” said UNICEF country chief Jonathan Veitch. “Many of the areas where the needs are greatest are out of reach because of the security situation. It is crucial that we are given unrestricted access now.” The warning comes three months after the last UN-backed specialised hunger assessment, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) report.

Three Palestinians armed with guns, knives and explosives killed an Israeli border policewoman and seriously wounded another before being shot dead by nearby officers at an entrance to Jerusalem’s walled Old City on Wednesday, Israeli police said. It was the latest in a spate of stabbings, shootings and car-rammings by Palestinians that has killed 27 Israelis and a U.S. citizen since October. Israeli forces have killed at least 155 Palestinians, 101 of them assailants according to authorities. Most of the others have died in violent protests. The Palestinians launched the attack at the Damascus Gate, a busy plaza in East Jerusalem, after being stopped by police for an identity check, a police spokeswoman said. All of the three attackers were carrying concealed weapons and at least one of them opened fire with an automatic rifle, killing one of the policewomen before they were shot dead by Israeli security forces, the spokeswoman said. The other policewoman was stabbed and wounded, and two pipe bombs were found at the scene, she said.

Hamas on Wednesday buried two of its terrorists killed in a tunnel collapse, amid growing concerns in Israel over the rebuilding of underground attack tunnels for use against Israeli civilians. The Islamist terror movement that runs Gaza said the two men killed in Tuesday night’s tunnel collapse belonged to its armed wing, the Ezzedine al-Qassam Brigades. Hundreds of men, many armed and wearing balaclavas, took part in the funeral. Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s leader in Gaza, called the two men “martyrs” and praised “those who work silently underground for us to live in dignity on earth.” The collapse came just one week after an even deadlier accident in another terror tunnel, in which seven Hamas terrorists were killed. Israeli concerns increased on Friday after Haniyeh, in comments at the seven men’s funeral, boasted that Hamas is developing its military capabilities and rebuilding the underground tunnels leading from Gaza to Israel. But Mahmoud al-Zahar, a senior Hamas official, on Wednesday toned down the rhetoric with a statement on the Hamas website denying comments attributed to him that the tunnels had already reached into Israeli territory. “The resistance tunnels are defensive tunnels for the protection of our people in the face of any Israeli aggression,” he claimed.

Headline: IDF General Says Israel Effectively Part of Coalition Against ISIS

A top Israeli general said Wednesday that the Islamic State group is “our enemy” and that Israel is sharing intelligence with allies battling the extremists despite remaining on the sidelines of Syria’s civil war. Maj. Gen. Nitzan Alon said that while Iran remains the greatest threat to Israel, the ISIS group is also a dangerous adversary. Israel has kept its distance from the civil war on its northern doorstep, wary of appearing to side with any of the warring parties — nearly all of which are hostile to it. But Alon, who heads the military’s operations branch, told reporters that Israel is essentially part of the international coalition against ISIS and shares intelligence with its allies. “From Israel’s perspective, we definitely see Daesh as an enemy,” he said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

Headline: Lebanese army kill 2, arrests 27 militants in border town

Lebanese soldiers killed two gunmen and arrested at least 27 suspected militants, including a commander from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) group, in a raid in the town of Arsal near the border with Syria, a security source on Wednesday. The source said that among those detained was Abu Bakr al-Raqqawi, a local commander of ISIS, and three high profile insurgents. He said the army carried out the raid after receiving intelligence that Raqqawi and others were in the northeastern town, which has suffered from a spillover of violence from nearly five years of conflict in Syria.
Nusra Front and ISIS fighters have staged regular incursions into Arsal from the barren hills just outside the town. They overran the town briefly in 2014 before withdrawing to the hills after clashes with the army.

Syria Headline: U.N. halts Syria talks as government closes in on Aleppo

A United Nations envoy halted his attempts to launch Syrian peace talks on Wednesday after the army, backed by Russian air strikes, made a major advance against rebel forces north of Aleppo, choking opposition supply lines from Turkey to the city. The government’s territorial breakthrough came after hundreds of bombing raids by Russian warplanes. The U.N. said it had been told hundreds of families had been uprooted following “an unprecedented frequency of air strikes in the past two days”. Three aid workers were among the dead. U.N. envoy Staffan de Mistura announced a three-week pause in the Geneva talks, the first attempt to negotiate an end to Syria’s war in two years. He had formally opened them on Friday but both sides denied they had ever begun.

Syria Headline:  Syrian army and allies breaks rebel siege of Shi’ite towns: army

The Syrian army and its allies have broken a three-year rebel siege of two Shi’ite towns in northwest Syria, government and rebel groups said on Wednesday, cutting off a main insurgent route to nearby Turkey. The two towns of Nubul and Zahraa, with an estimated 60,000 population, are connected to the border by areas under the control of Kurdish militias that provided them some access. Al Manar, television channel of Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group, joined Syria’s army and state media in reporting the breakthrough, which it said came after the army moved in from towns secured in a recent offensive in northern Aleppo province. A Levant Front rebel said the siege was broken “after three days of legendary resistance by the revolutionaries facing the Russian military machine, an after more than 500 raids by Russian air planes”. “Less than 3 km separate the regime from cutting all routes to opposition-held Aleppo,” said Rami Abdulrahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said. “It did in three days what it failed to do in 3-1/2 years.”

Syria Headline: Syrian army, with Russian air support, attacks southern town of Athman

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that Syrian infantry and tank forces, backed by artillery, attacked the town of Athman, located four kilometers north of the rebel stronghold of Daraa, from three directions on Wednesday morning. The attack included Russian bombers as well as Syrian attack helicopters dropping barrel bombs. The sources said the rebels may lose control of Daraa, their stronghold in southern Syria, if Athman falls to the Syrian army.

Iraq Headline:    Iraq building security wall around Baghdad

Iraqi security forces have begun building a concrete wall surrounding the capital Baghdad in a bid to prevent attacks by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants, a military statement said on Wednesday. ISIS, the ultra-hardline group that seized vast swathes of territory north and west of Baghdad, claimed several attacks in recent months in the Iraqi capital. The last one, on Jan. 11, targeted a shopping mall and killed at least 18 people, according to police sources. The planned security barrier will surround the city from all sides, said Baghdad Operations Command’s head Lieutenant-General Abdul Ameer al-Shammari, in a statement published on the defense ministry’s website. The preparatory work on the wall started on Monday, he said. “The security barrier around Baghdad will prevent terrorists from infiltrating the capital or smuggling explosives and car bombs to target innocent civilians,” he said.

Iraq Headline:     Arabs, Kurds retake Iraq village from Daesh

Sunni Muslim Arab fighters backed by Kurdish forces and US-led air strikes retook a village in northern Iraq on Wednesday in an example of effective military cooperation on the ground between them against Daesh insurgents. The offensive in the Makhmour district south of Erbil began early on Wednesday, resulting in the recapture of Kudila — part of a series of planned operations to clear Daesh militants from the area, Kurdish and Arab commanders said. Kurdish forces have driven the ultra-hard-line Sunni militants back in northern Iraq, but have been reluctant to push further into predominantly Arab territory for fear of being seen as an occupying force by inhabitants and provoking a backlash. Local Sunni Arabs have been training in the Makhmour area as part of the Hashid Shaabi or Popular Mobilization Force, a coalition of mainly Shiite Muslim militias in which Iraqi Prime Minister Abadi would like to include Sunni groups. “In coordination with the (Kurdish) peshmerga and supported by coalition planes they have a plan to clear and liberate all the areas that the terrorists seized,” said peshmerga commander Qader Qader. “These attacks will continue.”
Speaking via phone from Kudila with the sound of heavy machine gun fire in the background, one peshmerga said Daesh had deployed three suicide car bombs to fend off the assault and at least eight militants had been killed.

Kurdish Headline: Iraqi-Kurdish leader urges independence vote

Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region should hold a non-binding referendum on independence, its president said on Tuesday, despite the numerous crises it is facing. Massoud Barzani has previously called for a referendum but set no timetable for a proposed vote. The chaos created by ISIS’s occupation of swathes of Iraq and Syria has given Kurds a chance to further their long-held dream of independence. But the region is currently struggling to avert an economic collapse. “The time has come and the situation is now suitable for the Kurdish people to make a decision through a referendum on their fate,” Barzani said in a statement on his website. “That referendum does not mean proclaiming statehood, but rather to know the will and opinion of the Kurdish people about independence and for the Kurdish political leadership to execute the will of the people at the appropriate time and conditions.”

Senior political figures in Azerbaijan have warned that a military option remains on the table to resolve the smoldering conflict with Armenia over the Nagorno-Karabakh region. Azerbaijan will spend $1.2 billion on defense and security in 2016 and Baku hopes a decade-long massive military build-up will help it win back Nagorno-Karabakh and other Armenian-occupied territories. Baku prefers a diplomatically brokered resolution to the conflict but Hikmat Hajiyev, spokesman for Azerbaijan’s foreign minister, cautioned that if these do not soon bear fruit, Azerbaijanis may lose patience with the international community. He said Azerbaijani armed forces “stand ready” to prevent any “provocation,” adding, “We have the defense capabilities to take back these territories militarily. We do not want to use force but we can be patient only up to a certain point.” The official stressed that defense spending had enabled the Azerbaijani armed forces to be supplied with requisite advanced weaponry needed to re-take

Two Australians were diagnosed with the Zika virus after returning home from travels in the Caribbean, a state health service said on Tuesday, confirming the first cases of the mosquito-borne virus in the country this year. Officials also said that mosquitos carrying the virus had been detected at Sydney International Airport, but stressed that it was unlikely the virus would establish local transmission given the lack of large numbers of the Aedes Aegypti mosquitos. Confirmation of the Australian cases came just a day after the World Health Organization declared the Zika virus to be an international public health emergency due to its link to underdeveloped brains in some babies. Strong storms in the Southeast spawned tornadoes that touched down in Alabama and Mississippi Tuesday, damaging or destroying dozens of homes and at least one church, as well as a prison. No fatalities or major injuries were reported. The worst damage occurred Tuesday in Sapps, Ala., a small community near the Mississippi border approximately 40 miles west of Tuscaloosa. AL.com reported that dozens of homes were reduced to rubble and at least one mobile home was cracked in half after it was apparently picked up, carried and dropped by high winds. “I was in the bed asleep at the time and it woke me up. It sounded like a train,” Anthony Walker told AL.com. “It’s the first time in about 25 years a tornado hit here.” The National Weather Service in Birmingham confirmed that a “large and destructive tornado” touched down near the city of Aliceville, about 45 miles west of Tuscaloosa, early Tuesday evening.

Headline: Gov’t approves mixed prayer area at Western Wall

The government approved on Sunday the creation of a mixed prayer area at the Western Wall in which both men and women can pray together. According to the proposed arrangement, a new prayer area will be set up south of the existing separate prayer areas. The new prayer area will be modeled on the one set up at Robinson’s Arch two years ago where Women of the Wall could worship, and will allow Reform and Conservative Jews to pray according to their custom. The compromise agreement, which was formulated by a team headed by Cabinet Secretary Avichai Mandelblit and signed by Women of the Wall and the Western Wall Heritage Foundation, ensures that “the Western Wall will be open and accessible to any Jew seeking to pray in a manner that befits his identify and beliefs.” The new prayer area will be made “respectable, accessible and visible, and serve as an integral part of the Western Wall site.” However, the new area will not be connected to the existing separate men and women sections, as it is on a lower level, and located on the other side of the Mughrabi Bridge leading to the Temple Mount. In addition, because of the political sensitivity over construction at the site, it is not possible to create contiguity between the different prayer areas, but the three areas will share an entrance.

Three IDF soldiers were wounded in a shooting attack on Sunday morning at a checkpoint south of the settlement of Beit El in the Samaria region of the West Bank. The terrorist, who arrived at the checkpoint by car from the direction of Ramallah, was shot dead by IDF troops at the checkpoint. He was using a handgun to commit the attack. One of the wounded soldiers, 21 years old, was taken to the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Ein Karem in serious condition with a gunshot wound to his neck. His condition was later updated to moderate. Another soldier, 31, was in serious condition and taken to the Hadassah Medical Center in Jerusalem’s Mount Scopus with gunshot wounds to his stomach and extremities. The third soldier, 20, was also taken to Hadassah in light condition after being hit in his extremities. A source in the Palestinian security services told Ynet that the terrorist, Amjad a-Sukari, 34, from Jamma’in, was part of the Palestinian security forces and worked as the driver for the Palestinian attorney general Ahmad Hanoun in Ramallah. Meanwhile, Israel’s leaders are clinging to lame locutions – “good judgment and responsibility” – to avoid military action for dealing with crisis situations fast coming to a head on three extremely dangerous fronts: armed Palestinian terrorists are now tying up traffic on a major Israeli highway to the Israeli capital; southern Syria is sliding into the control of Hizballah after this Iranian proxy was permitted to amass 100,000 missiles in S. Lebanon; and, this week, Israelis living near the Gaza Strip heard Palestinians building terror tunnels under their homes.

Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri, spokesman for the Saudi-led coalition in Yemen, told Reuters that the Houthi militia and army forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh had fired more than 40,000 projectiles across the border since the war began. “Now our rules of engagement are: you are close to the border, you are killed,” he said. In a measure of how fierce the fighting on the frontier continues to be, nearly 130 mortars and 15 missiles were fired by the Houthis and Saleh’s forces at Saudi border positions on Monday alone, Asseri said in an interview in Riyadh. Riyadh has been sharply criticized for civilian casualties in coalition air strikes and on Sunday announced it was improving its targeting mechanisms and would form a committee to investigate claims it had hit non-military targets. Around 6,000 people, about half of them civilians, have been killed in fighting and coalition air strikes in Yemen since the war began, according to the United Nations. The civilians killed in Saudi Arabia included both Saudis and expatriates, Asseri said.

An Islamic State affiliate has also emerged in recent months, carrying out a series of attacks on Shiites and government officials. At least 4 members of Egypt’s security forces have been killed in two separate bomb explosions in the country’s volatile Sinai Peninsula. Both attacks targeted the country’s military personnel on Monday. In one attack, a remotely controlled bomb hit a vehicle belonging to the region’s police forces killing two cops, officials told local media. The attack happened in the far northeast of Egypt in the Rafah region, on the border with the besieged Gaza Strip. Syria Headline:  Syria conflict: Dozens killed near Sayyida Zeinab shrine

At least 71 people have died in blasts near the Shia shrine of Sayyida Zeinab, south of Syria’s capital Damascus. A bus station and a building housing military headquarters were hit by the blasts, which mangled nearby vehicles. It happened as the government and opposition groups gathered in Geneva in a bid to start talks aimed at a political solution to the conflict. The attack, claimed by the Islamic State group, was aimed at disrupting the talks, the EU said. Sunday’s attacks near Sayyida Zeinab were carried out by two suicide bombers, but some witnesses spoke of three blasts. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that, of the 71 people killed, 42 were fighters loyal to the Assad regime. The group said another 29 civilians, including five children, died. The blasts took place several hundred metres from the golden-domed shrine, which was not itself damaged – although it has been previously targeted, most recently in February last year.

The United Nations announced on Monday peace talks for Syria had begun and called on world powers to push for a ceasefire, even as government forces, backed by Russian air strikes, launched their biggest offensive near Aleppo in a year. Government troops and allied fighters captured hilly countryside near Aleppo on Monday, putting a key supply route used by opposition forces into firing range, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group. Rebels said the offensive was being conducted with massive Russian air support, despite a promise of goodwill steps by the Syrian government to spur peace negotiations. “The (latest) attack started at 2 a.m., with air strikes and missiles,” said rebel commander Ahmed al-Seoud, describing the situation near Aleppo, once Syria’s biggest city and commercial center, now partly ruined and divided between government and insurgent control. Seoud told Reuters his Free Syrian Army group had sent reinforcements to an area near the village of Bashkoy. The British-based Observatory monitoring group said government forces were gaining ground in the area, and had captured most of the village of Duweir al-Zeitun near Bashkoy. It reported dozens of air strikes on Monday morning. Syrian state television also said government forces were advancing.

Syria Headline:  Syria rebels wage new Quneitra offensive

Syrian rebels have launched a new offensive in Quneitra in which they aim once again to open a supply route through the province bordering Israel toward opposition-held positions surrounded by regime troops in Damascus’s western Ghouta area. On Friday, the Syrian Revolutionaries Front, Ansar al-Islam Front and Jaysh al-Sabtain all announced they were starting a campaign entitled “’In Aid of the Children of Madaya,” a reference to the Qalamoun town besieged by Syrian regime forces and Hezbollah. The rebel factions explained they sought to capture Jaba, Tel Kroum, Tel Bazzaq, Al-Rubaei Checkpoint and Mant al-Hisan, all areas east of the regime-held towns of Baath City and Khan Arnabeh. In the ensuing days, rebel groups have shelled regime positions, amid reports of clashes around Jaba, however the opposition factions have yet to notch any advances on the ground. The pro-opposition Al-Souria Net said Sunday that rebels were targeting regime points with artillery, mortars and heavy machinery fire “in the hope of achieving progress in the field in the coming hours.”

The top U.S. general in Iraq said Monday that more American troops on the ground may be needed to help the Iraqi army mount the kind of conventional warfare operations needed to defeat Islamic State militants. “Yes, there is a good potential that we will need additional capabilities, additional forces to provide those capabilities. And we’re looking at the right mix … in consultation with the government of Iraq and our other partners,” Army Lt. Gen. Sean MacFarland told reporters Monday. The general said the American-led military training mission there is now focused more on conventional warfare tactics. “We have shifted from a pure counterinsurgency focus and are now preparing the [Iraqi security forces] to conduct what we refer to as combined arms operations,” MacFarland said in a video teleconference from Iraq. “The ability to integrate infantry, armor, artillery, air power, engineers and other assets on the battlefield, provides the Iraqis with a decisive advantage over a static enemy dug in behind complex obstacle belts,” MacFarland said.

At least eight fighters from the Kurdish Peshmerga were killed and six more wounded when militants of the Islamic State (ISIS) bombed Peshmerga’s headquarters in northern Iraq, military sources reported on Sunday. The Peshmerga ministry of Iraqi Kurdistan said in a statement that ISIS launched an attack with mortar fire on their headquarters in Khazir district, about 40km east of Mosul. “Daesh terrorists launched several mortar shells on a security center for our forces in Khazir on Sunday evening,” Peshmerga leadership said, using another acronym for ISIS. “The terror attack led to the martyrdom of eight of our soldiers,” it said, adding that six others were injured. “The wounded soldiers were transferred to Erbil (capital of Iraqi Kurdistan) for treatment,” the Kurdish leadership added. Speaking to ARA News in Erbil, Peshmerga officer Mehme Khalil said: “Our forces were able to impede ISIS’s progress in eastern Mosul. At least five members of the Turkish army forces have been killed in two separate attacks carried out by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in the country’s volatile southeast. According to a statement released on the Turkish Armed Forces’ (TSK) website, three members of the security forces were killed and two others were seriously wounded on Monday in an armed attack by PKK militants in the Sur district of Diyarbakir, situated 676 kilometers (420 miles) east of Ankara. The two injured soldiers are still receiving treatment, reports said. The statement also added that two other Turkish soldiers lost their lives in a separate attack in Sur on the same day. This as three Turkish security officers, including a soldier and two police officers, were killed on January 31 in clashes with the PKK in the violence-hit Cizre district of the southeastern province of Sirnak.

Maintenance teams are working to repair damage caused by an attack on an oil pipeline south of the Libyan port of Zueitina, a spokesman for the pipeline’s guards said on Monday. It was not clear who carried out the attack late on Sunday evening, but Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) militants have been active in the area in recent weeks. An explosion and fire hit the pipeline in the desert 75 km (47 miles) south of the terminal, said Ali al-Hassi, a spokesman for the Petroleum Facilities Guard that controls nearby oil installations. The pipeline leads from oil field 103 to the export terminal at Zueitina, which was closed last year by a conflict between Libya’s rival governments, one based in Tripoli and the second, internationnally recognised one in the east. ISIS militants have taken advantage of political chaos and a security vacuum to establish a foothold in Libya. Last month, they launched a series of attacks causing major damage at the oil terminals of Es Sider and Ras Lanuf, which lie between Zueitina and the ISIS-controlled city of Sirte.

Tunisian police have clashed with Islamist gunmen in a remote mountainous area in the southern region of Gabes, killing at least two miliants, the interior ministry said on Monday. Islamic State has also claimed three deadly urban attacks last year that hit Tunisia’s tourism industry. “During counter-terrorism operations, police exchanged fire with a group of terrorists. First indications are that two terrorists were killed and a policeman injured,” the ministry said in a statement. Tunisia has escaped major upheaval and violence suffered by other countries who ousted longstanding leaders in the 2011 Arab Spring revolts. It has been held up as a model for democratic transition since the uprising against Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali. But its young democracy and economy were tested by three major attacks last year, including Islamic State shootings targeting foreigners at a Sousse beach hotel and a Tunis museum, and also a suicide bombing in the capital.

It was the third deadly attack to hit the area in four days, after suicide bombers killed at least 24 people in two separate attacks on towns to the south. Nigeria’s army said the gunmen attacked Dalori just outside Maiduguri late on Saturday after evening prayers, burning down the village and sending residents fleeing into the bush. A first toll Sunday put the deaths at 50 but Borno State health commissioner Haruna Mshelia said 75 bodies were brought into hospitals and 10 others buried. “A total of 65 bodies were deposited at the specialist hospital, 10 others are being deposited at UMTH (another hospital), while another 10 were buried yesterday evening at the Dalori community cemetery” Mshelia said.

Six people have been injured and a child has been killed in a mortar attack on the presidential palace in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, police say. The incident occurred on Monday after mortar shells targeted Villa Somalia, the main government complex which includes Somalia’s presidential palace. “There was a mortar attack near the presidential palace, but several of the rounds struck civilian neighborhoods,” Somali police officer Abdirahman Siyad said. “An innocent child died and a number of others were wounded.” Witnesses said they heard as many as five explosions. “I saw six wounded civilians, some of them seriously,” said Abdi Moalim Hussein, one of the neighbors. No group or individual has so far claimed responsibility for the attack but such acts of violence are usually carried out by the al-Qaeda-linked al-Shabab militant group.

Back in 2010, 388 members of the elite had as much wealth as the poorest half of humanity. But since then that number has been steadily falling and now it is down to just 62. At this pace, Oxfam is projecting that in just a few years a single person will have as much money as the poorest half of the global population combined. Have you noticed your banking options are much more limited than 20 years ago?  In the last few decades 37 banks have merged to became just 4 mega-banks: Citibank, JPMorgan/Chase, Bank of America and Wells Fargo. This same trend can be seen in the corporate media world. Thirty years ago 50 different corporations dominated what, today, we call the mainstream media. Now that control has been centralized around 6 major corporations: Time Warner, Walt Disney, Viacom, Rupert Murdochs News Corp., CBS Corporation and NBC Universal. Together, the “big six” absolutely dominate news and entertainment in the United States. If you look at any type of media outlet today, chances are they will have links to one of these companies. It is not without significance that all these major media conglomerates are also corporate members of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Headline: IMF sees years of austerity for Saudi Arabia, as debt defaults loom

The International Monetary Fund has predicted years of higher taxes and low fuel subsidies for oil-rich Saudi Arabia. As crude prices have fallen more than 70 percent in 18 months, weaker players could soon start to default on debts. Saudi Arabia will need to stop relying so heavily on oil revenues, which make up more than 80 percent of the government’s wealth, said Masood Ahmed, head of the Middle East department at the IMF. “This will have to be part of a multi-year adjustment process. There will have to be a major transformation of the Saudi economy. It is necessary, and it is going to be difficult, but it is a challenge which I think the authorities have clearly laid out,” Ahmed told the Telegraph. According to IMF estimates, Saudi Arabia may be running a $140 billion budget deficit, much more than the official figures of $98 billion. To change that, Riyadh will have to change its electricity, water and oil subsidies for population of 30 million. “Energy price reform is key. It has been part of the social contract but that will now need to change,” Ahmed said. The current situation in the oil market reminds analysts of 1986 oil glut, when the Saudis sparked a four-month, 67 percent collapse that left oil just above $10 a barrel. Prices sank to as low as $10.42 per barrel in March 1986 from a November 1985 peak of $31.72. During the 1986 oil crisis, 17 out of 25 of the world’s major oil producers defaulted on their debts, says a research from Oxford Economics. The debt in these producers rose to 40 percent of GDP on average.

The World Health Organization has announced that the explosive spread of the Zika virus in the Americas is an “extraordinary event” that merits being declared an international emergency. The agency convened an emergency meeting of independent experts on Monday to assess the outbreak after noting a suspicious link between Zika’s arrival in Brazil last year and a surge in the number of babies born with abnormally small heads. Although WHO Director-General Dr. Margaret Chan said there was no definitive proof that the Zika virus, spread by mosquitoes, is responsible for the birth defects, she acknowledged on Thursday that “the level of alarm is extremely high.” The last such public health emergency was declared for the devastating 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, which killed more than 11,000 people. WHO estimates there could be up to 4 million cases of Zika in the Americas in the next year.

Headline: Volcano explodes 1.8 miles high hours after massive earthquake

The Karymsky volcano in Russian Kamchatka’s eastern volcanic zone spewed ash up to 3km into the air, according to the Regional Emergencies Ministry. Airlines have been placed on an “orange” warning to avoid the area following today’s eruption. It came less than 48 hours hours after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake tore through the region, followed by a series of at least seven less powerful aftershocks. Terrified shoppers fled from a shopping mall after feeling the tremors inside. The epicentre of the earthquake was within about 20 miles of the 1,486 metre-high magma mountain, prompting fears seismic activity is on the rise and there could be a catastrophic earthquake, volcanic eruption or both.

Normally I do not post over the weekends but I wanted to share this photo with you. James Morris sent me this photo. As you can see they gave the picture the name the “Hand of God“.  As soon as I saw this photo a rush went through me pointing me to the words of Jesus Christ in Revelation 8:8 which states the following: And the second angel sounded, and as it were a great mountain burning with fire was cast into the sea: and the third part of the sea became blood;”.  In line with what Jesus as shown us for the future I think a better name for this photo would be: “A Warning From God of Things to Come“.  Can you image during the tribulation seeing a huge mountain falling towards Earth. It would look very much like this picture.  If you are not saved yet you should read the book of Revelation to see what you will have to go through. Keep in mind, most of the population of Planet Earth will not make it through the tribulation.  Jesus has given us more than enough warnings concerning these last days.  Why?  Because He wants you to come to Him for salvation before you find yourself in the midst of this tribulation.  Any comments?
