Headline: Hamas ‘working to double its arsenal of rockets for next war with Israel’

A senior commander of Hamas’ military wing said on Monday that while his organization has no interest at the moment in fighting Israel, the Gaza-based Islamist group wants to double its arsenal of rockets and missiles in anticipation of the next round of fighting. Marwan Issa told a gathering Gaza City that Hamas continues to manufacture rockets and forge alliances with whoever can assist its cause.

Headline: US officials warns tensions with Israel could last, as Kerry lobbies Saudis on Iran

A top US official Tuesday warned that the current tensions between traditional allies US and Israel could last until the end of the Obama administration in 2016. “There are moments of significant agreement and then there are moments of tactical disagreement,” US deputy secretary of state Antony Blinken told French radio station Europe 1. “That’s the nature of things and I imagine that will continue for the last two years of the Obama administration,” added Blinken, who spoke in French. Iran and the United States Tuesday returned to the negotiating table for a second day of talks, as a political storm over the issue unfolded thousands of miles away in Washington. By the shores of Lake Geneva in the town of Montreux, US Secretary of State John Kerry met with his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif as they try to pin down a political framework for a deal to rein in Tehran’s nuclear programme by a March 31 deadline. US officials said they began their talks at 9:30 am (8:30 am GMT).

Headline: Netanyahu Responds to Obama’s Criticism of His Speech to Congress

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday he offered a “practical alternative” to the deal being negotiated over Iran’s nuclear program, after President Barack Obama criticized his address to Congress as containing “nothing new.” Obama said Netanyahu didn’t offer any “viable alternative” and that “as far as I can tell, there was nothing new” in the Tuesday speech. “In my speech before the Congress, I presented a practical alternative,” Netanyahu said upon landing at Israel’s Ben-Gurion Airport. He said his alternative would impose tougher restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program and delay how quickly the Islamic Republic could assemble a nuclear weapon.

Headline: Abbas refuses to drop ICC lawsuits against Israel

The Palestinian Authority will not go back on its demands for an International Criminal Court investigation into war crimes allegedly committed by Israel, despite the fact that the Israeli government offered to return hundreds of millions of dollars in Palestinian tax revenues in exchange for dropping the lawsuits, PA President Mahmoud Abbas said Wednesday. “The International Criminal Court is the only place where we can raise complaints about the occupation,” Abbas said at a meeting of the Central Council of the Palestine Liberation Organization. “They told us that if we do not go to The Hague they will return us the money. We are against barter in return for us not appealing to the court,” he said. “How are they allowed to take away our money? Are we dealing with a state or with a gangster?” Abbas added, according to Reuters.

Headline:Temple Mount Police Openly Defy Court Ruling on Jewish Prayer

The Israeli courts may have once again ruled in favor of Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount, but a senior Jerusalem police officer made it clear to Jews visiting the holy site that the police would not be following that ruling. The officer, who is well known to Jewish visitors and responsible for clearing Jewish visits (amid severe restrictions), told a group Wednesday morning that as far as he and the police force as a whole were concerned “this court ruling doesn’t exist.” Rabbi Chaim Richman, International Director of the Temple Institute and long-time advocate for Jewish rights on the Temple Mount, recounted the “astonishing” conversation to Arutz Sheva after returning from his visit. The fact that a police officer was willing to so brazenly deny the court’s authority “reveals the depths of the subterfuge” involved in banning Jews from worshipping at their holiest site, he said.

Headline: Jordanian King Warns Global Battle With ISIS Has Launched World War III

Jordan’s King Abdullah II is warning that the international battle against Daesh – the terror organization known as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, ISIS or ISIL – has launched World War III, although the rest of the U.S.-led coalition fighting the radical Islamic terror group may not yet realize it. In fact, the Hashemite monarch told CNN’s Fareed Zakaria Global Public Square earlier this week, “This has to be unified. “I’ve said this to leaders both in the Islamic and Arab world, and to the world in general: This is a third World War by other means. “This brings Muslims, Christians, other religions together in this generational fight that all of us have to be in this together.

Headline:  Lebanon Army expands northeast border shelling

Headline:   Lebanese soldier and militant killed in shootout in north: sources

The Lebanese Army has expanded its targets along the northeastern border with Syria, pounding jihadi militants on the outskirts of Arsal, security sources said Tuesday. The sources said the new preemptive measure began late-Monday night with artillerymen shelling ISIS and Nusra Front positions around Wadi Hmeid and Wadi Hosn on Arsal’s outskirts. The Army had maintained a near-daily pattern of pounding militant positions on the outskirts of Ras Baalbek, which nestles in the barren mountainsides embracing the Bekaa Valley, for about 10-15 minutes every few hours in a bid to repulse possible jihadi attacks. It was the first time the Army shelled Wadi Hmeid and Wadi Hosn – the farthest east points in Arsal, close to the border with Syria. The policy of preemptive shelling was put in place after eight soldiers, including an officer, were killed and 22 others were wounded in fierce clashes with ISIS militants on the outer edge of Ras Baalbek in January.

Headline: Saudi Arabia, South Korea sign nuclear cooperation agreement to build reactors

The leaders of Saudi Arabia and South Korea agreed to cooperate to build more than two small and medium-size nuclear reactors in projects worth as much as $2 billion, The Korea Herald reported Tuesday. South Korean President Park Geun-hye arrived in Riyadh on Tuesday and met with King Salman to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations. Before visiting Saudi Arabia, Park concluded a three-day visit to Kuwait. She is scheduled to continue to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The two leaders signed a memorandum of understanding to build the Asian country’s SMART reactors, designed by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute specifically for Middle Eastern countries to generate electricity and desalinate seawater, said the report. The agreement calls for a feasibility study to construct the reactors in Saudi Arabia, which should be completed by 2018.

Headline: Arab League to Discuss Creation of ‘Unified Arab Force’

The Arab League will consider setting up a defense unit to battle the spread of the Islamic State (ISIS) group at its annual summit later this month, an official said Tuesday. Deputy chief Ahmed Ben Helli told reporters that the March 28-29 meeting in Egypt’s Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh will discuss an Egyptian initiative to create a “unified Arab force,” reports AFP. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called for such a unit to confront security threats in the region where ISIS holds swathes of Syria and Iraq and has gained a foothold in Egypt’s neighbor Libya. Last month Sisi ordered air strikes in Libya after ISIS jihadists there beheaded 21 mostly Egyptian Christians. Ben Helli said a united Arab force was needed, even as a “symbolic” show of deterrence at times of “conflict or disasters.” “Such forces should be ready and present so that they could symbolically show that the Arab countries have a deterrent force and a peacekeeping force that could step in at times of conflicts,” he said.

Syria Headline:     Syrian Rebels Bomb Key Aleppo Intelligence HQ

Dozens were killed Wednesday when Syrian rebels set off a powerful tunnel explosion targeting an intelligence headquarters in Aleppo and clashed with regime forces, a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the blast hit a building housing the air force intelligence offices in the west of Syria’s second city and was followed by heavy clashes, reports AFP. “The explosion and the fighting caused dozens of deaths on both sides,” the Britain-based group said, adding that part of the building had collapsed. At least 20 regime forces and 14 rebels were killed in the fighting according to the monitoring group. They added that the attempt to conquer the regime headquarters failed, and sporadic fighting had started to dwindle. The clashes pitted rebels from several factions against government troops supported by fighters from Lebanese Shi’ite terrorist group Hezbollah, an Iranian proxy and a key backer of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, it said. An AFP journalist in eastern Aleppo said the blast was loud enough to be heard across the city and some residents said it had felt like an earthquake. A Syrian military source confirmed the explosion and said clashes were continuing.

Syria Headline:  Pro-Assad forces target civilian cars near Turkish border

On Tuesday, pro-Assad military forces reportedly targeted with thermal rockets civilian cars which were carrying displaced families near the Turkish border. Dozens of casualties were reported, including children. Civil rights activist Ghias Ali told ARA News that the regime’s warplanes try to prevent displaced civilians from crossing into Turkey by targeting their vehicles near the borderline. While fleeing to the Turkish territory, the villagers are also facing vigorous difficulties due to the ongoing clashes between rebels of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and al-Nusra Front (Syria’s branch of al-Qaeda) in the countryside of Aleppo in northern Syria. Speaking to ARA News, Talib Ismail from the village of Maarat Nasan said that he has been trying to move his family out of the war-torn village for a few days without success. “The roads are closed due to the thermal rockets launched by Syrian warplanes,” he said, pointing out that the only road open is through Afrin area, “which we cannot cross because of the security checkpoint by different armed forces.” “Severe shortages of food hit the village (Maarat Nasan) over the last few days due to the closed roads. People can hardly survive under such conditions,” Ismail added.

Iraq Headline: IS says US suicide bomber carried out Iraq attack

Iraq Headline: ISIS Unleashes Guerrilla Tactics in Bitter Battle for Tikrit

An American jihadist carried out a suicide truck bomb attack against Iraqi forces involved in an operation to recapture the city of Tikrit, the Islamic State group said Tuesday. “The brother Abu Dawud al-Amriki (may Allah accept him) launched himself with his explosives-laden truck against a gathering” of Iraqi forces and militiamen, an IS radio bulletin said. The report gave no details on the man’s identity.  It claimed that dozens of Iraqi forces were killed and wounded in the blast, but no other sources could immediately confirm. Pro-IS social media accounts said the attack was carried out Monday near Samarra, the other main city in Salaheddin province, and released a picture they said was of Abu Dawud al-Amriki. He is masked with only a pair of dark eyes visible. He also wears a microphone, suggesting the group may issue a video of the militant later. Samarra is controlled by the government and has been the launchpad for a broad military operation which officially began Monday to wrest back Tikrit — further north up the Tigris River — from the jihadists.

Iraq Headline: Iranian-backed Shiite militias lead Iraq’s fight to retake Tikrit

The Iraqi Security Forces, supported by several Iranian-backed Shiite militias and Sunni tribal fighters, have launched an offensive to retake Tikrit from the Islamic State, which has held the central Iraqi city since June 2014. Massive columns of Shiite militas, including some groups that are listed by the US as Foreign Terrorist Organizations, have been leading the fight in Tikrit. The operation, which involves more than thirty thousand Iraqi security personnel and militia forces, started on the morning of March 2. According to Al Jazeera, Iraqi forces and allied militias attacked the city from three sides while Iraqi aviation launched an aerial bombardment. As of yet, the US has not launched any airstrikes in support of the operation. The US has refused to support the Tikrit offensive because Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) elements are actively supporting the operation, anonymous US officials have told The Wall Street JournalAlthough the US military has refused to provide air support for the offensive due to Iran’s involvement, General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Iran’s involvement could be “a positive thing” if the Shiite militias do not lash out at Sunnis in and around Tikrit.

Iraq Headline: Iraqi forces advance to free Salahudin province from IS militants

Iraqi security forces on Wednesday continued their biggest offensive for the third day in Salahudin (Salah al-Din) province to free the northern parts of the province from the Islamic State (IS) militants, security sources said. The troops and allied Sunni and Shiite militias, covered by Iraqi air support, attacked Ajil oilfield area in east of the provincial capital city of Tikrit, some 170 km north of Baghdad, sparking heavy clashes with the IS militants, a provincial security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. The troops continue their fight during the day to free the oilfield within the coming few hours of the day, the source said. Late on Tuesday, the troops recaptured the nearby oilfield of Allas, after they drove away the extremist militants, he said, adding that both the small oilfields apparently were used to fund the extremist militants’ activities. Meanwhile, the security forces are still progressing slowly and cautiously from their positions around the towns of Dour in south of Tikrit and Alam in east of the city, because the militants planted dozens of bombs in the roads leading to the towns, while sporadic clashes and sniper shots were also behind the slow advance of the troops who sustained some casualties.

The top U.S. military officer expressed openness Tuesday to providing U.S. weapons to Ukrainian forces, joining a growing number of senior American officials who say greater U.S. involvement may be needed in Kiev’s fight against Russian-backed separatists. “I think we should absolutely consider providing lethal aid,” said Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. “And it ought to be in the context of our NATO allies because [Russian President Vladimir] Putin’s ultimate objective is to fracture NATO.” Dempsey’s comments came in response to a question from Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a strong proponent of arming Ukrainian forces, as Dempsey and Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter appeared before the Senate Armed Services Committee to defend President Obama’s proposal for military spending in fiscal 2016. Although he stopped short of saying he would definitely support providing weapons to the Ukrainian military, it was the first time that Dempsey publicly backed consideration of such a move.

Headline:   Russia Accuses U.S. of Plot to Oust Putin Via Opposition Aid

Russia’s Security Council accused the U.S. of plotting to oust President Vladimir Putin by financing the opposition and encouraging mass demonstrations, less than a week after a protest leader was murdered near the Kremlin. The U.S. is funding Russian political groups under the guise of promoting civil society, just as in the “color revolutions” in the former Soviet Union and the Arab world, council chief Nikolai Patrushev said in an e-mailed statement Wednesday. At the same time, the U.S. is using the sanctions imposed over the conflict in Ukraine as a “pretext” to inflict economic pain and stoke discontent, he said. U.S. officials have dismissed the suggestion of a plot. White House spokesman Josh Earnest called the idea “outrageous and false.” Secretary of State John Kerry said this week that Putin “misinterprets a great deal of what the United States has been doing and has tried to do.” Will Stevens, a spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, said by e-mail that sanctions on Russia are aimed at seeking a change in the country’s policies, not its government. More than 50,000 people turned out in central Moscow on Sunday to mourn the death of Boris Nemtsov, a former deputy premier-turned Putin opponent who was gunned down in one of the most heavily guarded areas of the capital late Friday. That was the biggest rally Russia has seen since 2011-2012, when Putin was preparing to return to the presidency for a third term.

Headline: Iran’s Khamenei: ‘Increasing global hatred of Israel is a sign of divine help’

Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has claimed that heightened anti-Israel sentiments across the globe serve as a sign of “divine help” in the Islamic Republic’s fight against its arch enemy. “Increasing global hatred of #Israel is a sign of divine help,” he wrote late Monday on Twitter. Iran’s leading cleric came out against the pro-Israel lobby, American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the group’s annual confab on Monday. “The day when Western ppl realize that their problems result from #Zionism’s hegemony over govts they will make an inescapable #hell for them,” Khamenei said on Twitter. According to Khamenei, Israel has also exerted its control over American officials, “obliging” them to “flatter” the government in Jerusalem. “Zionists’ hegemony over US officials is such that these poor ppl have to show consideration for #Israel& cover up its crimes. #ShutDownAIPAC,” said the chief Iranian cleric.

Headline: Iran, UN atomic watchdog to meet in Tehran March 9

Iran rejected on Tuesday as “unacceptable” U.S. President Barack Obama’s demand that it freeze sensitive nuclear activities for at least 10 years but said it would continue talks on a deal, Iran’s semi-official Fars news agency reported. Iran laid out the position as the U.S. and Iranian foreign ministers met for a second day of negotiations and as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu delivered a stinging critique of the agreement they are trying to hammer out. Iran’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif and U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met a day after Obama told Reuters that Iran must commit to a verifiable halt of at least 10 years on sensitive nuclear work for a landmark atomic deal to be reached. “Iran will not accept excessive and illogical demands,” Zarif was quoted by Fars as saying.

Headline:    Sources: More than a dozen ISIS operatives in Libya, but no US authority to strike

More than a dozen Islamic State fighters from Iraq and Syria — some with direct ties to the group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi — are now in Libya working on behalf of the terror group, according to U.S. and European sources. And the U.S. has no authority to take them out. The fighters are in addition to dozens of ISIS sympathizers in the country. The situation is raising fresh security concerns, as the U.S. and its allies struggle to keep tabs on the many arms of the ever-expanding ISIS network. One source, who is not authorized to speak on the record given the sensitivity of the data, said they would not be surprised “if the next 9/11 came out of Libya.” An ISIS presence has been flagged in Benghazi, Derna and Sirte, in addition to training camps providing a steady flow of recruits.

Headline:  Libya oil fields of Bahi and Mabruk ‘seized by militants’

Headline:  Libya declares force majeure at 11 oil fields after attacks

Headline:  Air strikes carried out on Tripoli airport: military

Islamist militants are reported to have seized two oil fields in central Libya, as rival groups fight for control of the country. Forces guarding the Bahi and Mabruk sites retreated after running out of ammunition. It is not clear which group seized the oil fields. Libya’s internationally recognised government in Tobruk and its rivals Libya Dawn also conducted air strikes on each other’s positions. “Extremists took control of the Bahi and Mabruk fields and are now heading to seize the Dahra field following the retreat of the forces guarding these sites,” said Colonel Ali al-Hassi, a spokesman for the oil industry security service. A gun attack on Mabruk in February left 11 people dead. At the time witnesses said the attackers had claimed to be from a militia which has joined Islamic State. The Islamic State militia, which controls the town of Derna, has not commented. The BBC’s Rana Jawad in Tripoli says the seizure of these fields will put more pressure on Libya’s oil-reliant economy, already barely functioning because of the battles between rival forces driven by political differences and local grievances.

Tunisian police killed two Islamist militants during clashes near the Algerian border, where the military has been targeted previously in ambushes, the army said on Wednesday. The fighting came after army and police launched a major operation this week to flush out militants from a base in the Chaambi mountains near Algeria. “Our special forces killed two members of the terrorist group in Chaambi mountains in an exchange of fire,” said army spokesman Bel Hassen Ouslati. “The Tunisian army seized weapons, after the confrontation with terrorists,” he added. Last month, four Tunisian police were killed in a militant attack in the same central region of Kasserine.

Headline:   70 Years After Hitler’s Death, Germany To Republish ‘Mein Kampf’

Adolf Hitler’s manifesto “Mein Kampf” is a rambling, hate-filled, disjointed and sometimes unintelligible blueprint for the Third Reich. When a new annotated edition of the book is published in Germany in January 2016, it will mark the first time in almost 70 years that the text will be found in German bookstores. After the war, the occupying allies banned the book, and the rights passed to Hitler’s home state of Bavaria. But the copyright expires at the end of the year, and all 16 German states have agreed that the book can be re-released, as long as it contains annotations. But even with the 4,000 or so expected footnotes, there has been protest. A spokesman for the Jewish Forum For Democracy Against Anti Semitism in Berlin asked “can you annotate the devil?”

Headline: Suspicions of Turkey, Hamas alliance stoke fears in Israel

Hamas, the terrorist group perpetually at odds with Israel, has found a willing patron in Turkey, say critics, who allege the NATO member has rolled out the red carpet for the Jewish state’s longtime nemesis, whose official headquarters are now in Istanbul. Kicked out of Damascus in Syria amid deteriorating relations with the Assad regime, Hamas’ top leadership has established a new office in Istanbul called the ‘West Bank and Jerusalem Headquarters.” With the approval of the Turkish authorities, Salah Al-Arouri, one of the founders of the Al Qassam Brigade (Hamas’ military wing), and who served 15 years in jail in Israel for terrorist offenses, has been directing Hamas’ efforts in the West Bank to overthrow the Palestinian Authority and attack Israel at the same time. “Turkey has become a Hamas hotbed, and members of the organization’s military wing are undergoing military training on Turkish soil, with the knowledge, support, and assistance of the local authorities,” leading Israeli daily Yediot Aharonot reported last week. “The U.S. administration has appealed in recent months to the Turkish government to prevent Hamas military activity in its territory, arguing that Turkey is a member of NATO and that Hamas is viewed by most NATO members as a terrorist organization. The appeals have gone unanswered.”

Headline:   Armenia-Azerbaijan bloodletting threatens Karabakh ceasefire

Locals sigh with relief as their Armenian village of Movses, close to the border with Azerbaijan, disappears in the lilac mist rolling down from the Kardash mountain, where Azeri snipers have fortified positions. “The mist is our salvation. When visibility is zero, we know the Azeris won’t be shooting,” said Khanum, an elderly Armenian woman who, like other Movses residents, lives in constant fear of Azeri snipers. But just across the frontline, on the Azeri side, the fear is no less intense. “The streets are deserted during the daytime,” said Ismail Nabiyev, who lives in Alibeyli, an Azeri village. “We can’t hold wedding parties or funerals. The Armenians shoot at us when they see people gathering.” The bloody Azerbaijan-Armenia conflict over the Nagorny Karabakh region formally became a frozen one over two decades ago. In reality the war has never stopped for Azeri and Armenian villagers living along their countries’ border. The villages of Movses and Alibeyli lie around 200 kilometres from Nagorny Karabakh itself. But violence has spread far beyond the epicenter of the conflict, with Azeri and Armenian sharpshooters along their border threatening the shaky peace as tit-for-tat bloodletting annually claims dozens of lives. Sparking fears of a new all-out war between the countries, last year saw an unprecedented spiral of violence with more than 70 people from both sides killed. At least for those living in these rural border areas, war has already returned.

Headline: Boko Haram Adopts ISIS Style In New Beheading Video

President Idriss Deby of Chad said on Wednesday he knew the whereabouts of Abubakar Shekau, the leader of the Nigerian militant group Boko Haram, and called on him to surrender or risk being killed. Chad’s army has waged a series of battles against Boko Haram as part of a cross-border military campaign and has re-taken territory the militant group held in northeastern Nigeria. “‎Abubakar Shekau must surrender. We know where he is. If he doesn’t give himself up he will suffer the same fate as his compatriots,” Deby told a news conference. “He was in Dikwa two days ago. He managed to get away but we know where he is. It’s in his interests to surrender,” Deby said, referring to a town in northeastern Nigeria held by Boko Haram that fell to Chad’s army earlier this week. The Chadian army is considered one of the best in the region and is backed by a strong air force. It first deployed to help Cameroon fend off Boko Haram and is now pressing southwest into Nigerian territory after capturing the border town of Gambaru last month.

Headline:  Five dead in Qaeda suicide attack on Houthis in central Yemen

Headline:  Yemen’s Hadi wants reconciliation talks moved to Saudi

Five people were killed in an al Qaeda suicide attack on a Houthi outpost in central Yemen on Tuesday, the Defence Ministry said, highlighting the volatility of a country torn by militant and sectarian violence. The United States and its Gulf allies fear the spread of militant and sectarian violence in Yemen — situated between oil giant Saudi Arabia and an important Red Sea shipping lane — will push the country towards a civil war and unravel the state’s already limited control over its territory. The ministry’s news website said five people were also wounded in Tuesday’s attack by a suicide bomber who detonated a vehicle laden with explosives on a youth centre used by the Houthi militia as an outpost in the city of al-Baydah. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the Sunni Muslim militant groups battling the Shi’ite Houthis since they captured AQAP’s central Yemen strongholds last year, said several of its members carried out the attack.

Headline:  Saudi Arabia ups official oil prices amid signs of stronger demand

Headline:   GOP-led Senate fails to override Obama’s Keystone veto

Saudi Arabia raised the official selling prices (OSPs) for its oil deliveries to Asia and the United States on Tuesday, in the latest signal OPEC’s largest exporter is seeing signs of stronger demand. The Kingdom raised all U.S.-bound crude prices by $1 a barrel and hiked extra-light crude oil to Asia by $1.40 a barrel, in a vote of confidence oil demand is growing in two of its biggest markets following the price crash since June. While the increase was largely anticipated by traders amid other signs of robust demand, it bolsters the impression Saudi Arabia is comfortable with the rebound in Brent crude to around $60 a barrel after hitting a six-year low of $45 in January.

Headline:   CBO: U.S. will hit debt limit in October or November

The Treasury Department will exhaust its capacity to borrow in October or November if the debt limit isn’t raised, the Congressional Budget Office estimated Tuesday. The non-partisan CBO had previously estimated that “extraordinary measures” Treasury could use to continue borrowing would last until September or October. Read CBO’s latest estimate. The debt limit is suspended until March 15. After that date, so-called extraordinary measures available to the Treasury to keep borrowing include deferring new investments in federal retirement and disability funds. Wall Street analysts have also estimated the Treasury will likely have until the fall to raise the debt ceiling. The Republican-led Congress would need to take a vote to increase the borrowing limit. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, has pledged not to let the government default on its obligations. But some in the GOP could call for spending cuts in exchange for raising the borrowing limit and force negotiations to go down to the wire.

Headline:   U.S. judge rules Nebraska same-sex marriage ban unconstitutional

A federal judge on Monday ruled Nebraska’s ban on gay marriage unconstitutional in a decision that could allow same-sex couples to marry in the state within a week. U.S. District Judge Joseph Bataillon issued a preliminary injunction in the case brought by seven same-sex couples in the state, calling Nebraska’s ban an “unabashedly gender-specific infringement of the equal rights of its citizens.” Bataillon denied a state request to stay his decision but said his injunction would take effect on March 9 to assuage Nebraska officials’ concerns of possible administrative turmoil. Nebraska state officials quickly appealed the ruling to the 8th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. “The definition of marriage is an issue for the people of Nebraska, and an activist judge should not substitute his personal political preferences for the will of the people,” Governor Pete Ricketts said in a statement. Nebraska voters in 2000 adopted a state constitutional amendment that defines marriage as only between one man and one woman and does not recognize civil unions, domestic partnerships or similar relationships for same-sex couples.

Headline: ABC Family’s show ‘The Fosters’ Airs Youngest-Ever Gay Kiss Between Two 13-Year-Old Boys

Set in a mixed family environment, The Fosters are a diverse group of children, both biological and adopted, whom an interracial lesbian couple cares for, according to the show’s IMDB page. The show, which premiered in 2013, already pushes the limits in the eyes of some, who have raised questions regarding what constitutes modern family programming. The watchdog group One Million Moms boycotted the show immediately after it was announced in 2012. The group then stated: Obviously, ABC has lost their minds… One Million Moms is not sure how the explanation will be given on how the biological children were conceived. None of this material is acceptable content for a family show … Let’s stop this dead in it its tracks. Co-executive producer Jennifer Lopez previously described the show as portraying “a new kind of family” and believes it is reflective of the world today. “Family has tuned into something else,” said Lopez. “Family equals love.” ABC Family, originally founded by controversial pastor Pat Robinson as the Christian Broadcasting Network, was acquired by Disney in 2001.

Three lawmakers refused to attend the Idaho Senate’s daily invocation after objecting to the offering of a Hindu prayer. Rajan Zed, guest chaplain, gave a lengthy prayer in both English and Sanskrit on Tuesday that focused on selflessness and peace. Senators from both sides of the aisle shook his hand and thanked him for coming. However three lawmakers, all Republican, only came back onto the floor once the prayer was over: Sens. Steve Vick, Sheryl Nuxoll and Lori Den Hartog. Nuxoll says she declined to attend because she believes the United States is a Christian nation. Vick had announced his objections the day before, saying that he would ask his colleagues to join him. Hartog said it would’ve been disingenuous to her Christian faith to attend.

Headline:   New York public schools add two Muslim holidays to calendar

New York public schools will add two Muslim holidays to their vacation calendars, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday, a promise he made during his election campaign. Two of the most sacred holidays in the Islamic calendar, Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, will be observed. Eid al-Adha, or “Festival of Sacrifice,” will be a vacation day on September 24, starting in the 2015-2016 school year. The festival of breaking the fast, Eid al-Fitr, which falls over the summer in 2016, will be designated a holiday for summer school students. The mayor said the move reflects New York’s diversity, calling it a “common sense change.” “We made a pledge to families that we would change our school calendar to reflect the strength and diversity of our city,” he said in a statement. “Hundreds of thousands of Muslim families will no longer have to choose between honoring the most sacred days on their calendar or attending school.” New York public schools already give students the day off for some Jewish and Christian holidays. Muslim children account for about 10 percent of New York’s public school students. It is not the first city to close for Muslim holidays — some districts in Vermont, Massachusetts and New Jersey already do.

Headline:  Mexican drug cartels reach Japan; meth seizures double

A report released Wednesday by the International Narcotics Control Board revealed that Mexican drug cartels have extended their reach to Japan, where methamphetamine seizures have doubled compared to the previous year. The Control Board, a United Nations organization, released its annual report Wednesday and concluded that Mexican drug cartel influence has also created a “significant” increase in crime associated with the drug. Although most of the methamphetamine abused in east and southeast Asia is produced within the region, sources for methamphetamine have originated from Africa to Iran. “In a worrying development, trafficking of amphetamine-type stimulants through East Africa (e.g. Ethiopia and Kenya) for onward shipment by plane to east and southeast Asia has continued,” the Control Board states. “The latest reports from the authorities in Japan suggest an increasing influence of Mexican cartels on its domestic methamphetamine traffic.” The Attorney General’s Office of Mexico suspects gangs in Hong Kong are making deals with Mexican drug cartels by helping give the cartels the precursor chemicals to making meth.

Volcano Villarrica in southern Chile erupted in the early hours of Tuesday, sending a plume of ash and lava high into the sky, and forcing the evacuation of nearby communities. The volcano, located near the popular tourist resort of Pucon around 750 km (460 miles) south of the capital Santiago, is one of South America’s most active. It last erupted in 2000. A column of ash and rock particles shot up to 3 km (nearly 2 miles) into the night sky at around 3 a.m., said the national geological service Sernageomin. Some 3,385 people had been evacuated as a preventative measure, said Interior Minister Rodrigo Penailillo.

CooltextprophecysignAnd I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts say, A measure of wheat for a penny, and three measures of barley for a penny; and see thou hurt not the oil and the wine. (Revelation 6:6).  With each day our food sources are waving good bye to us.  I have put together a massive list of the mass deaths of the birds, fish, and animals and at the same time we are still reading new reports concerning the bees dying off.  As you will see from the report below people are working to find ways to get the bees into the crop fields.  After reading the book of Revelation and reading what Jesus warned us about famines in the last day one can see the hand writing on the wall. Expect to see more food prices going up as more of our food supply fades away.  I am grateful to the Lord that He has sent you to my site and hopefully you have ready my warnings to watch the food prices to rise again in 2015.  Here is an example of one of the new reports dealing with this issue. The headline to the report is entitled: “Rise in beef prices expected to continue”

http://www.usatoday.com/story/money/business/2015/02/28/rise-beef-prices-expected-continue/24184055/  I hope that if you extra funds that you consider buying alittle more food if you can because all you are going to see is how the food costs are going out of reach for many people not just in the third world nations but in America as well. It has already started to happen!

Headline: Italian lawmakers urge recognition of Palestinian state

Italian lawmakers on Friday backed a non-binding resolution that encourages the government to recognize Palestine as a state, a move that underlines European frustration over stalled Middle East peace negotiations. European countries have become increasingly critical of Israel, which since the collapse of the latest US-sponsored talks last April has pressed on with building settlements on territory the Palestinians want for their state. Italy’s Chamber of Deputies voted by 300 to 45 to pass the motion presented by Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s Democratic Party (PD). While most developing countries recognize Palestine as a state, most Western European governments do not, supporting the Israeli and US position that an independent Palestinian state should emerge from negotiations with Israel. Friday’s symbolic vote does not change the position of the Italian government which, like other European countries, still supports a negotiated two-state solution.

Headline: Israel, Jordan sign Red–Dead canal agreement

Israel and Jordan agreed on Thursday to begin work on the Red Sea–Dead Sea Canal project, which will convey potable water to Jordan, Israel and the Palestinian Authority. Environmental organizations object to the project and have proposed another plan, which they say would be more effective and less wasteful, such as conveying water to Jordan via the Jordan River. The project envisages bringing water from the Red Sea to stabilize the level of the Dead Sea and setting up a desalination facility in Aqaba, Jordan. The agreement signed by the two countries on Thursday provides for a joint administration to draft a tender and choose the contractors for the project. Officials said that construction of the desalination facility was expected to start in about 18 months, while the laying of the 180-kilometer pipe would begin in about three years.

Headline: Jordan, Egypt to intensify military cooperation

His Majesty King Abdullah on Thursday held talks in Cairo with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah Al Sisi that focused on means to strengthen Jordanian-Egyptian relations and addressed the regional latest developments. During a one-on-one meeting, which was followed by a broader meeting, the two leaders commended the distinguished level of bilateral relations, drawing on a long history of ongoing cooperation and coordination, a Royal Court statement said. King Abdullah and Sisi stressed commitment to maintain consultations on issues of mutual concern in a manner that serves joint Arab action and the interests of the two countries. During the talks, the two sides agreed on intensifying military and security cooperation through forming a joint task force to draw up a framework to confront regional challenges. The King, who returned home later on Thursday after concluding the one-day visit, reaffirmed Jordan’s support for Egypt in a manner that reinforces its historic role in the Arab world and the Middle East. The Egyptian president expressed his appreciation of Jordan’s stance, which attests to the Kingdom’s continued support of its “Arab brethren” and all efforts that unify their ranks and serve their just causes.

Headline:   Lebanese army combat Syrian militants near Baalbek

The Lebanese army says it has seized two hilltop positions along the border from Syria-based Islamic militants. In a statement Thursday, it says the operation is in line with efforts to secure villages near the eastern border with neighboring Syria. Three soldiers were wounded in the operation, during which militant positions were shelled with artillery and heavy weaponry, it added. The statement did not name the militants, but most are believed to be from the Islamic State group. They and the al-Qaida-linked Nusra Front have been holding around 20 Lebanese soldiers and policemen hostage since August.

Headline:   Dozens of suspected militants killed in Egypt’s North Sinai: sources

One person was killed and five others including policemen were wounded when five bombs exploded in Cairo on Thursday, security sources said. A bomb exploded outside a restaurant in the residential district of Imbaba, killing one and wounding two, the Interior Ministry said in a statement. Three policemen were wounded when another device went off near a police station in the poor district of Alwaraq near Imbaba, security sources said. Three other bombs exploded in the nearby mainly middle-class district of Mohandeseen, the interior ministry said. They caused limited damage to mobile phone shops, but no injuries. Most of the worst in a campaign of bomb attacks in Egypt have hit the Sinai peninsula, a remote but strategic region bordering Gaza, Israel and the Suez Canal. But smaller blasts have become increasingly common in Cairo and other cities.

Syria Headline:   Car bomb kills 11 outside Damascus: activists

Eleven people were killed on Friday in a car bomb blast in a rebel-held area outside the Syrian capital, while seven people died in regime air raids, an activist group monitoring the war said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the toll from the bomb blast, which occurred near a mosque in the town of Dmeir, was expected to rise because of the number of people seriously wounded. The Britain-based activist group said a woman and a child were among those killed in the government airstrikes on the Marj region elsewhere in Eastern Ghouta, a key rebel bastion outside Damascus.

Iraq Headline: Bombings, mortar fire kill 10 people in Iraq

A series of bombings and mortar strikes in and near the Iraqi capital killed 10 people on Friday as Baghdad police discovered six bodies with gunshot wounds, officials said. In the capital’s southern district of Dora, mortar shells killed two people inside their homes early in the morning, and wounded four others. Bombs also targeted market places Friday, usually a shopping day for many Iraqis. In Baghdad’s western Sadiyah neighborhood, a bomb blast near a wholesale vegetable market killed three people. Another bomb went off near an outdoor market in the Sabaa al-Bour area, just north of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding eight. Shortly after sunset, a bomb blast at a commercial street killed two people and wounded five in Baghdad’s southeastern district of New Baghdad, police said. Medical officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to journalists.

Iraq Headline: UNESCO demands emergency Security Council session over Iraq artifacts

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has called for an emergency meeting of the Security Council in the wake of the mass destruction of rare ancient artifacts by ISIL Takfiri terrorists in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. “This attack is far more than a cultural tragedy – this is also a security issue as it fuels sectarianism, violent extremism and conflict in Iraq. This stands in direct violation to the most recent United Nations Security Council Resolution 2199 that condemns the destruction of cultural heritage and adopts legally-binding measures to counter illicit trafficking of antiquities and cultural objects from Iraq and Syria,” UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova stated on Thursday. “This is why I have immediately seized the president of the Security Council to ask him to convene an emergency meeting of the Security Council on the protection of Iraq’s cultural heritage as an integral element for the country’s security,” she added.

Kurdish Headline: Kurds Capture Part of Key ISIS Stronghold

Kurdish fighters seized the eastern and southern outskirts Friday of a key Islamic State (ISIS) stronghold in Syria’s northeastern Hasakeh province, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor said. Fighters from the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) had entered Tal Hamis and captured parts of the town after six days of clashes with the jihadists, the Britain-based group said. The town is northeast of the provincial capital, Hasakeh city, and has been under ISIS control for more than a year. Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said the town was “one of the most important strongholds” of the group in the region. The Kurdish advance comes after days of fighting in which YPG forces have taken some 103 villages and hamlets in the area. Since the clashes began Saturday, at least 175 ISIS fighters have been killed by the Kurds and air strikes by a the US-led coalition. Additionally, 30 fighters from the YPG and Syrian Arab rebel units fighting alongside them have been killed. Among the dead was an Australian, the first Westerner to die in a Kurdish unit in Syria. The Pentagon said the coalition had carried out several air strikes in Hasakeh province Thursday, including three near Hasakeh city and three near Tal Hamis.

Headline: FBI Director: ISIS Tentacles Reach into All 50 U.S. States

The presence of the Islamic State (ISIS, ISIL) in the United States can be felt in all 50 states, according to the director of the FBI. FBI Director James Comey told the National Association of Attorneys General that ISIS is a “chaotic spider web” that avidly uses social media to radicalize people across the United States. “We have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states,” said Comey, adding, “This isn’t a New York phenomenon or a Washington phenomenon. This is all 50 states and in ways that are very hard to see.” He made those comments as the FBI arrested three men in Brooklyn, New York for attempting to provide support to ISIS. Comey said his agency is investigating suspected ISIS supporters who reside in all 50 states. “Those people exist in every state. I have homegrown violent extremist investigations in every single state. Until a few weeks ago there was 49 states. Alaska had none which I couldn’t quite figure out. But Alaska has now joined the group so we have investigations of people in various stages of radicalizing in all 50 states,” Comey said.

Headline: ISIS: Pro-Palestinians in Europe Actually Sleeper ISIS Cells

Pro-Palestinian rallies and groups are being used to aid the rise of Islamic State (ISIS) in Europe, according to a book the group released this month – united under the front of “bringing down Zionsim.” The book, Black Flags from Rome, encourages European Muslims to rise up and aid ISIS from within, according to a report on the PJ Media website – and notes that terror cells have already been formed. “There were small armies of the Islamic State within every country of Europe by late 2014, and the intelligence agencies didn’t even know about it!” the book exclaims. “If you have ever been at a pro-Palestine / anti-Israel protest, you will see many activists who are not even Muslims who are supportive of what Muslims are calling for (the fall of Zionism),” it continues. “It is most likely here that connections between Muslims and Left-wing activists will be made, and a portion from them will realize that protests are not effective, and that armed combat is the alternative.” Such “recruits” being lured to ISIS due to frustration over their lives “will give intelligence, share weapons and do undercover work for the Muslims to pave the way for the conquest of Rome,” the book also predicts.

Headline:   2014 Was Deadliest Year for Terror Attacks in 45 Years

Terrorist attacks and resulting deaths increased sharply last year, according to statistics made public Thursday by the director of national intelligence. “When the final counting is done, 2014 will have been the most lethal year for global terrorism in the 45 years such data has been compiled,” DNI Director James Clapper told Congress, adding that about half of all attacks took place in three states: Iraq, Pakistan, and Afghanistan. Last year from January to September, around 13,000 terror attacks were carried out, killing 31,000 people. By contrast, in 2013, 22,000 people were killed in terrorist violence in over 11,500 attacks, Clapper disclosed during a wide-ranging world threat briefing before the Senate Armed Services Committee. More than 3,400 foreign jihadists have joined the al Qaeda offshoot known as the Islamic State (IS) that is showing signs of establishing its own nation state, Clapper said. The DNI also testified that IS (also known as ISIL or ISIS) is expanding outside Iraq and Syria into the Arabian Peninsula, North Africa, and South Asia. The group also is planning terror attacks on Western interests and against Shiite Muslims, he said.

Headline: Deaths shake Ukraine truce; Poroshenko wary of Russian threat

Ukraine on Friday reported the first deaths in three days in east Ukraine and President Petro Poroshenko said Russia would pose a “military threat” even if a ceasefire holds. Government troops fighting pro-Russian separatists in the east began towing artillery away from the front line on Thursday, a sign the truce meant to begin on Feb. 15 could at last be taking effect. But Kiev’s military later announced the deaths of three servicemen in the past 24 hours, following two days with none. “Even under the most optimistic scenario … the military threat from the east would unfortunately remain,” Poroshenko said in a televised speech, in a clear reference to Russia. Kiev and Western governments have accused Russia of sending troops and weapons to support the separatists in east Ukraine, despite a peace deal agreed in the Belarussian capital Minsk on Feb. 12. Moscow has denied this.

Headline:  Libya Warns of more Air Strikes with Egypt against IS

Libya’s internationally recognized Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni said his government would stop dealing with Turkey as it was sending weapons to a rival group in Tripoli so “the Libyan people kill each other”, ramping up his rhetoric against Ankara. Two administrations, one in the capital and Thinni’s in the east, have been vying for power since an armed group called Libya Dawn seized Tripoli in July and reinstated lawmakers from a previous assembly, four years after Muammar Gaddafi’s ousting. “Turkey is a state that is not dealing honestly with us. It’s exporting weapons to us so the Libyan people kill each other,” he told Egyptian TV channel CBC late on Thursday. A spokesman for Turkey’s foreign ministry strongly denied Thinni’s allegations. “Instead of repeating the same baseless and untrue allegations we advise them to support U.N. efforts for political dialogue,” spokesman Tanju Bilgic told Reuters. “Our policy vis-a-vis Libya is very clear. We are against any external intervention in Libya and we fully support the ongoing political dialogue process under U.N. mediation.”

Headline:   Tunisia to get 8 Black Hawks for fight against militants

Tunisia will be most affected if the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) continues to expand in Libya, Tunisian terrorism experts say. “Libya is a ticking bomb,” former Brigadier-General Mohammed Sellami told Al Arabiya News. “Not dealing with terrorism in Libya is likely to shake security in Tunisia, and even the Maghreb region in the long run.” Last week, an ISIS-style video was released that purported to show the beheading of 21 Egyptian Copts, prompting hundreds of Egyptians residing in Libya to flee to Tunisia. “One of ISIS’s strategies is expansion. It has already threatened to go to Tunisia on multiple occasions,” said political analyst Noureddine Mbarki. “The terrorist threat is the most serious danger facing Tunisia right now.” Tunisia has been dealing with its own insurgency since the 2011 revolution that toppled President Zine al-Abidine Ben Ali. Last week, around 20 militants from the Okba Ibn Nafaa Brigade opened fire at a police checkpoint, killing four officers. The brigade operates in Mount Chaambi near the Algerian border, and was responsible for killing 14 soldiers with rocket-propelled grenades in July 2014. Tunisia is also dealing with a hard-line Salafist movement called Ansar al-Shariah, which was formed in 2011 and later officially declared a terrorist group.

Headline: Fighting ISIS ‘Not a High Priority for Turkey’

Turkey does not place a high priority on fighting Islamic State (ISIS) jihadists and as a result foreign fighters are able to travel through the country into Syria, United States intelligence chief James Clapper said Thursday, according to AFP. Asked if he was optimistic that Turkey would take a more active role in the war against ISIS, Clapper told senators: “No, I’m not.” “I think Turkey has other priorities and other interests,” he was quoted as having told the Senate Armed Services Committee. The Turkish government was more concerned with Kurdish opposition and the country’s economy, the director of national intelligence said. “Public opinion polls show in Turkey they don’t see ISIL as a primary threat,” said Clapper, using an alternative acronym for the group. The effect of Turkey’s approach was to allow a “permissive” climate for foreign recruits heading to Syria to take arms for ISIS, he said. “And of course, the consequence of that is a permissive environment… because of their laws and the ability of people to travel through Turkey en route to Syria,” Clapper said. “So somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 percent of those foreign fighters find their way to Syria through Turkey.”

A bomb blast in the northeastern Nigerian town of Biu has claimed the lives of at least 18 people. According to Babagana Kyari, a civilian vigilante, on Thursday, “at least 18 people, including three women, died… and several others were injured” when a bomber targeted the Tashar Gandu motor park in Biu, Borno State. Another bomber was gunned down before detonating his explosives in the town, said Ali Dauda, a local resident who witnessed the incident. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the bombing. However, the Nigerian government blames such attacks on the Boko Haram Takfiri group, which has recently intensified its acts of terror in the northeast of the African country. The attack came two days after a bomb blast targeted a bus station in the city of Kano, leaving 34 people dead.

A mortar attack on the Somali presidential palace in the capital, Mogadishu, has claimed the life of a security guard. “At least four rounds of mortar shells struck the parking area and a guard was killed in the attack,” said Abdurrahman Mohamed, a Somali security official, on Thursday. Gunmen ambushed a military truck during a night-time attack in a southern province, officials said, killing all four soldiers in the vehicle, in a raid claimed by Yemen’s Al Qaida branch. Yemeni security officials said the attackers surprised the soldiers late on Thursday with heavy gunfire while patrolling a street in Houta, a town in the southern Lahj province. They could not identify the attackers. The SITE intelligence group, which monitors militant online postings, quoted Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula as claiming responsibility in a statement posted on militant Twitter accounts. The militants said they set fire to the truck after they seized the soldiers’ machineguns. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the media. The province has seen increased activity by Al Qaida militants and Shiite Al Houthi rebels, both of which oppose the government.

Headline: Anti-government clashes in Greece as bailout extended

Greek protesters have turned against the government for the first time since the far-left Syriza party came to power, just as the country is getting a four-month extension of its bailout, which would have expired Saturday (28 February). Some 450 people took to the streets of Athens on Thursday to voice their anger at the government, with pockets of people hurling stones and petrol bombs at police and burning cars after the march was over. Even if small in scale when compared to the massive anti-austerity protests seen in Athens in the past five years, the Thursday incidents were the first manifestation of anger at the government led by Alexis Tsipras, who was elected on a promise to end austerity and cancel some of Greece’s debt. But after three weeks of negotiations with his eurozone peers, Tsipras had to abandon most of the campaign pledges and accept a four-month extension of the bailout complete with a strict reforms plan.

Headline: Bangladesh activists protest against US blogger’s murder

A U.S. blogger in Bangladesh known for his prominent stance against religious fundamentalism was hacked to death by unidentified attackers in the country’s capital Thursday night, police said. Avijit Roy and his wife Rafida Ahmed were attacked late Thursday night in Dhaka as they were returning from a book fair at Dhaka University. Ahmed was seriously hurt in the attack. Roy’s family said he was a prominent voice against religious fanatics and had received threats in the past. It is still unclear who was behind the attack. The local police chief, Sirajul Islam, told The Associated Press that the assailants used cleavers to attack Roy and his wife, who is also a blogger. “Several attackers took part in the attack and at least two assailants hit them directly,” Islam said, adding that two blood-stained cleavers were found after the attack. Roy founded a popular blog called Free Mind, which artiles on scientific reasoning and religious extremism were featured. The blog was written in Bengali. Roy’s brother Anujit said the Bangladesh-born U.S. citizen had returned to Bangladesh earlier this month from the U.S. Similar attacks have taken place in Bangladesh, a Muslim-majority nation of 160 million people but ruled by secular laws, in the past. Investigators have said religious fanatics were behind those attacks.

Headline: Thousands protest in Maldives, calling for president to quit

Thousands came by boat to the capital of the Maldives to protest on Friday against the arrest of former president Mohamed Nasheed and demand that current leader Abdulla Yameen resign. Tensions have escalated on the cluster of tropical islands off India’s southwestern tip since Nasheed was arrested last weekend on charges of terrorism relating to an incident when, as president, he ordered the arrest of a judge. Nasheed, who was thrown to the ground as police dragged him to court on Monday, has said he was forced to resign at gunpoint over the judicial row in 2012, and allies say he was ousted in a coup. Supporters of Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and the Jumhooree Party, which has broken away from Yameen’s ruling coalition, converged by boat from across the nation of 1,190 islands after a call to rally in Male. A reporter at the scene estimated the crowd at between 8,000 and 10,000 people. The entire population of the Maldives, a popular destination for sun-seeking tourists, is less than 400,000. Protesters waved green-and-red national flags and chanted a song whose words included a call to “stand in defense of the constitution”.

Headline: Filipino rebels kill 5 soldiers, injure 6

Five Filipino soldiers have been killed and six others injured in an ambush by communist rebels in the northern Ilocos Sur Province of the East Asian state, army officials say. The troops were returning to their headquarters in a convoy late Thursday when the New People’s Army guerrillas went on a shooting spree in Quirino township, 285 kilometers south of the Philippine’s capital, Manila, Captain Mark Anthony Ruelos of the 7th Infantry Division said on Friday. Armed forces spokesman, Colonel Restituto Padilla, said the troops fought back but their counterattacks remained futile because the rebels used civilians as human shields. The army officials said the guerrillas also opened fire on medical staff who were trying to retrieve the bodies of dead soldiers. Padilla said the rebels violated international law by using civilians as human shield.

Headline:   Weekly Jobless Claims Rise

The number of Americans seeking first-time unemployment benefits rose last week, a sign the labor market may have lost some steam after last month’s solid job growth. Initial jobless claims rose by 31,000 to a seasonally adjusted 313,000 in the week ended Feb. 21, the Labor Department said Thursday. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal had expected 290,000 new claims. Jobless claims are a measure of layoffs across the economy and have been hovering near levels last seen during the mid-2000s economic expansion. The weekly figure is notoriously volatile, especially around holidays; last week included Presidents Day. The longer-term trend suggests a tightening market as employers gain confidence and respond to higher demand.

Headline:   Another Record: $4.235 Per Pound for Ground Beef

The average price of a pound of ground beef climbed to another record high — $4.235 per pound — in the United States in January, according to data released today by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In August 2014, the average price for a pound of all types of ground beef topped $4 for the first time, hitting $4.013, according to the BLS. In September, the average price jumped to $4.096 per pound; in October, the average price climbed to $4.154 per pound; and in November, the average price climbed to $4.201 per pound. In December, the price declined slightly to $4.156 per pound. But in January 2015,ground beef hit the highest price ever recorded at $4.235 per pound. A year ago, in January 2014, the average price for a pound of ground beef was $3.467 per pound. Since then, the average price has increased 22.2 percent in one year.

Headline:   Saudis’ Oil Price War Is Paying Off

Three months after Saudi Arabia made clear it was going to let oil prices keep tumbling, the strategy is showing signs of working. U.S. drillers are idling rigs at a record pace, gutting investment plans and laying off thousands of workers. The number of rigs drilling for oil in the U.S. dropped by 37 last week to 1,019, the fewest since July 2011, data from Baker Hughes Inc. showed Feb. 20. Since Dec. 5, a total of 556 have been taken out of service. Oil explorers including Royal Dutch Shell Plc and Chevron Corp. have announced spending cuts of almost $50 billion since Nov. 1. Transocean Ltd., the world’s largest offshore driller, had its credit rating cut to junk Feb. 25 by Moody’s Investor Service on concern the company will increase debt levels while the drilling market deteriorates. It has about $9 billion of borrowings. U.S. oil production will cease its month-on-month growth in April because of the drop in the rig count, Marios Maratheftis, the Dubai-based global head of research for Standard Chartered Plc, said in Dubai on Feb. 23. Oil has rebounded 13 percent in New York since Jan. 29, following a drop of more than 50 percent since June, in part because of the decline in drilling, which signaled supply growth will slow.

Headline: HIV outbreak tied to painkiller, dirty needles

A quickly spreading outbreak of HIV in Southeastern Indiana is being linked to injection of the powerful painkiller Opana — raising concern among health officials across the region and nation as they face an epidemic of prescription drug abuse. Indiana state health officials said Wednesday that they have confirmed 26 cases, and four more preliminary cases, since mid-December, most linked to Opana injection and a few spread through sexual transmission. The cases were in Scott, Clark, Washington, Jackson and Perry counties, and officials said this is the largest HIV outbreak the state has ever experienced in one region.

Headline: Leprosy cases on rise in Florida

Three people have been diagnosed with leprosy in Volusia County over the last five months, two of whom got the disease after coming into contact with armadillos, health officials said. Officials said three cases is an unusually high number for a rare disease.  Typically, about 150 to 250 new cases of the bacterial disease are reported nationwide each year, with fewer than 10 in Florida, according to health officials. Eighteen cases of leprosy were reported in Brevard County over the last five years, including eight in 2014. Health officials said some of the Brevard cases were also linked to contact with armadillos, but it’s not known exactly how the animals were involved in each case. One case in Orange County was reported to the state last year.

Headline: Saudi reports 10 MERS deaths in a week

Ten more people in Saudi Arabia have died from MERS over the past week, health ministry figures showed Friday, after an international mission urged extra measures to combat the virus. Saudi Arabia is the country worst-hit by Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV). The latest deaths occurred between February 20 and 26, adding to a surge of cases which has killed 27 people since the start of the month. Doctor Abdul Aziz bin Saeed, who heads the centre coordinating the ministry’s response to MERS, warned in early February that a rise in cases typically occurs around this time of year, when there are more juvenile camels circulating.

Headline: Death toll of swine flu rises to 965 in India

The death toll from H1N1 virus or swing flu this year has risen to 965 in India, said Indian Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda Friday. A total of 965 people died due to swine flu this season but there is no need to panic as there is no shortage of free drugs to treat the patients at hospitals and clinics across the country, he said at the Lok Sabha or Lower House of Parliament. “We had made arrangements for doctors, medicines, testing facilities, isolation wards in November with the active support of the state governments,” he said. According to the minister, while swine flu symptoms like mild fever and cough are common, people should take immediately the medicines once the disease is suspected without waiting for the test results.

Headline:   ISIS now holds 262 Christians hostages in Syria

ISIS has seized even more Assyrian Christian hostages after taking over nearly a dozen Assyrian villages in northeastern Syria in the past few days, an activist said Thursday. The Sunni extremist group now holds 262 Assyrians captive, said Osama Edward, founder of the Assyrian Human Rights Network. “ISIS is taking over more and more Assyrian towns,” he said. The number has climbed steadily, from an initial estimate of between 70 and 100 people seized on Monday to 150 as of Wednesday, with women, children and the elderly among them. The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights put the number of Assyrian hostages seized over three days at 220, in a statement released Thursday. They were taken from 11 villages in the Tal Tamer area in al-Hasakah Province, the monitoring group said. Its information indicates that ISIS has taken them to the Mount Abdelaziz area, southwest of Tal Tamer. Edward, who is based in Sweden but has family in the area attacked by the terror group, said Wednesday his information was coming from the Assyrian Human Rights Network’s team on the ground.

Headline:   Ransom demand drops for American missionary; gangs, not Boko Haram suspected

Nigerian kidnappers holding an American missionary reportedly slashed their ransom demand in half Thursday, in yet another sign that they are most likely a small time criminal gang and not the feared Islamist group Boko Haram. The Rev. Phyllis Sortor, of Seattle, was kidnapped Monday from the Hope Academy compound in Kogi State, in the central region of Nigeria by armed men who demanded a ransom of $300,000 from local authorities for her safe return. That demand was slashed in half according to local reports on Thursday in Nigeria down to about $150,000. While the ransom demands are high, it’s a paltry amount for a militant extremist group such as Boko Haram according to experts on the region who spoke to FoxNews.com. “That’s not big money if you are a trans-national jihadist,” Mark Schroeder, vice president of Africa Analysis for global intelligence at the global intelligence firm Stratfor, told FoxNews.com. “It could be some local gang desperate for cash. Or presidential elections are coming up and this could have been a quick way for a group to extort money basically for rigging an election.”

Washington DC has become the latest place in the United States to legalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana. As of midnight on Thursday (05:00 GMT), people who use the drug in private no longer face prosecution. The change has created tension between the city’s mayor and Congress. Washington DC joins Alaska, Colorado, and Washington state as the only places in the US that allow the use of the drug for recreational purposes. Residents and visitors to the city over the age of 21 can possess as much as 2oz (56g) of cannabis, and may grow a few plants at home. Buying and selling the drug remains illegal, as does smoking it in public. The plan was overwhelmingly agreed in a referendum last November.

Headline:  Black hole 12bn times more massive than sun is discovered

A monster black hole powering “the brightest lighthouse in the distant universe” has been discovered that is 12bn times more massive than the sun, scientists have revealed. The extraordinary object is at the centre of a quasar – an intensely powerful galactic radiation source – with a million billion times the sun’s energy output. For years the nature of quasars, discovered in 1963, remained a mystery. Today scientists believe they are generated by matter heating up as it is dragged into supermassive black holes at the centre of distant galaxies. The new object, named SDSS J0100+2802, is 12.8bn light years from Earth and was formed just 900m years after the Big Bang that gave birth to the universe. Astronomers cannot explain how such an enormous black hole could have formed so early in cosmic history, soon after the first stars and galaxies emerged. Dr Fuyan Bian, from the Australian National University, a member of the international team, said: “Forming such a large black hole so quickly is hard to interpret with current theories …

Headline: IDF Installs Concrete Barriers Along Syrian Border

The IDF has placed concrete barriers along the Syrian border, Walla! News reports Tuesday, following the antitank missile attack from Hezbollah last month in the Golan Heights. “Following the increase in threats to IDF soldiers patrolling the border, and for fear of similar events, it was decided to increase in various ways the security measures in the area, including placing concrete blocs,” a senior military source stated. On January 28, Major Yochai Kalengal and Sgt. Dor Chaim Nini were killed after Hezbollah terrorists shot between 4-6 antitank missiles into Israel, near Har Dov in the Golan Heights. The attack also injured six additional soldiers, and a Spanish UNIFIL peacekeeper was killed in retaliatory fire from Israel.

Headline: Israeli fighter jets stage warning passes against Syrian air force intruders over Golan. Air tension high

Israeli fighter jets flew passes over the Golan Monday, Feb. 23 as a warning to Syrian helicopters and fighter planes to stop encroaching on the no-fly zone, in violation of standing Israeli-Syrian armistice agreements. This is reported by debkafile’s military sources. The Syrian warplanes planes came over Quneitra Monday to drop barrel bombs on Syrian rebel forces holding the town. Spotters on Israeli Golan counted at least 30 bombs dropped by helicopters under cover of Syrian air force jets. Their crews took no notice of the Israeli fighter jets and drones present at the time and continued their attacks regardless. At the end of the Syrian operation, Israeli aircraft conducted its warning passes over the Golan town. Our sources report that this was the second day in a row that the Syrian air force had bombed the same sector. Sunday, they struck rebel positions in the Tel Al-Harra area 6-8 km from the Israeli Golan border. Israel’s inaction then encouraged Damascus to move its warplanes closer to the border the next day and fly into the no-fly zone. This time, Israeli avoided a direct clash, but broadcast a warning that a confrontation was possible if the Syrians returned for a repeat. Western and Middle East military sources interpret the Israeli flights over Quneitra Monday as a clear warning to Damascus that Israel will not tolerate Syrian air raids close to its Golan lines or any incursions in airspace banned by their armistice agreements.

Headline: Report: Saudis might help Israel attack Iran in exchange for progress in peace process

In private talks with European sources, the Saudis have expressed their willingness to cooperate with Israel on Iran, including use of Saudi air space by the IDF for a possible air strike, according to a report by Channel 2. Cooperation with Saudi Arabia would not come free, however. According to the report, the Saudi officials said they would need to see progress between Israelis and Palestinians before having enough legitimacy to allow Israel to use their air space. Arab governments, not only Israel, have been expressing concern over the development of a deal with Iran over its nuclear program, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday. Talks with Iran over its nuclear program have instilled fear within some major Sunni states, such as Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates that a nuclear arms race will break out in the region, and brought about speculation regarding the possible extension of a US nuclear umbrella to its non-nuclear-armed Middle East allies. According to the Wall Street Journal, concerned Arab states said that a nuclear deal allowing Iran to keep its nuclear-producing technologies would likely drive nations in the region to develop nuclear capabilities in order to match those of Iran’s.

Two simultaneous suicide attacks killed four people and wounded 13 Monday in southern Damascus near the Shiite shrine of Sayyida Zeinab, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported. The agency, quoting police, said the twin attack took place at a security checkpoint near the shrine honoring a granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammad. “A civilian car had stopped at the checkpoint … and a terrorist got out wearing an explosive vest which he detonated,” SANA said, adding that seconds later a man who had remained in the car blew it up. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bombing targeted a checkpoint manned by a pro-regime militia, the Popular Committees, just 10 kms east of Damascus and on the road to the international airport. Other, pro-regime accounts of the incident said three suicide bombers were involved, and that at least six people were killed.

Iraq Headline: 58 killed in bomb attacks, airstrikes in Iraq

Up to 58 people were killed in separate bomb attacks and airstrikes in central and northern Iraq on Tuesday, security sources said. In Iraq’s northern central province of Salahudin, a bomb exploded near a group of young men who were gathered at a recruitment center at a military base near the town Amerli, some 70 km east of the provincial capital Tikrit. The blast killed three recruits and wounded five others, a provincial security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. Also in the province, a roadside bomb went off near a mosque in the town of Tuz-Khurmato, some 90 km east of Tikrit, killing two people and wounding four others, the source added. Elsewhere, two sticky bombs attached to a car in the town of Yousifiyah, some 20 km south of Baghdad, went off leaving two policemen killed and three people wounded, a police source on condition of anonymity. In the volatile province of Anbar, 23 Islamic State (IS) militants were killed late on Monday night when the security forces blew up a tunnel dug by the IS militants to reach to the fortified provincial government compound in the capital city of Ramadi, some 110 km west of Baghdad, a provincial security source told Xinhua.

Iraq Headline: ISIS seize 100 Iraqi tribesmen before battle for Tikrit

ISIS fighters have abducted 100 Sunni Muslim tribesmen near the city of Tikrit, local tribal leaders said Wednesday, apparently to neutralize suspected opponents before a widely expected army offensive. Iraqi soldiers and pro-government Shiite militias have been massing for days in preparation for an attack on ISIS strongholds along the Tigris River to the north and south of Tikrit, hometown of executed former president Saddam Hussein. Tikrit, about 150 km north of Baghdad, has been controlled by the Sunni Muslim radicals since they swept through northern Iraq in June, scattering Iraq’s security forces. Tribal leaders said ISIS fighters had detained 42 Sunni tribesmen in the village of Rubaidha Tuesday whom they suspected of being ready to take up arms against them. “They broke into the houses and asked for mobiles,” said Hatam al-Obeidi, a Rubaidha resident who escaped to the town of Tuz Khurmatu Wednesday. “They were checking everything in the mobiles that might show that the owner is against them,” he said, adding that his own telephone had been returned to him after a gunman told him he was “clean.”

Anastasiades, trying to play down the agreement, has said that it will renew an old one which covered Russia’s servicing of military equipment purchased by Cyprus. However, Cypriot government officials have acknowledged that it will extent the scope of the defense cooperation by offering facilities to Russia, such as refueling and maintenance for its aircraft at an air base in the western part of the island and also port facilities for Russian ships. Russia is the main supplier of arms to the small Cypriot National Guard. These include attack helicopters and an anti-aircraft missile system. Russia’s ambassador to Cyprus, Stanislav Osadchiy, has said that Russia asked for additional military facilities on the island, including storage space at the southern port of Limassol. Britain has voiced hardly veiled objections to Cyprus offering military facilities to Russia next to a British air base near Limassol, which is one of the most important airbases and electronic surveillance sites supporting NATO operation.

Headline: Fake US Aircraft Carrier the Target in Latest Iranian Drills

Despite Iran’s denials that it is on the path to a nuclear bomb, new evidence charges that the Islamic republic has an “underground top-secret site” that is enriching uranium intended for nuclear weapons that has been hidden from the West for years. According to the Iranian opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), the complex, called Lavizan-3, is right outside Tehran, “buried deep underground in tunnels and underground facilities” with “radiation-proof doors” to prevent any leaks that could be detected by the United Nations International Energy Agency inspectors. The revelations were unveiled during a Washington, D.C., news conference by the NCRI, which first exposed elements of Iran’s covert nuclear program in 2002. “This site must be inspected,” declared Alireza Jafarzadeh, deputy director of the NCRI’s Washington, D.C., office.

Headline:   ISIS kidnaps dozens in Afghanistan, official says

Gunmen in southern Afghanistan kidnapped 30 members of the Hazara ethnic community, authorities said Tuesday. The 30 people were kidnapped from two vehicles on a major road in Zabul province, provincial Gov. Mohammad Ashraf said. He said authorities were trying to find those kidnapped, some of whom may be government officials. Though no group immediately claimed responsibility for the attack nor demanded a ransom, deputy police chief in Zabul province told CBS News that militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) were behind the abductions, which he said took place on the Kabul-Kandahar highway on Monday night. Deputy police chief Ghulam Jilani Farahi told CBS News’ Ahmad Mukhtar over the phone that ISIS fighters “stopped two passenger buses traveling from Kandahar to Kabul and took 11 people from one bus and 20 people from the second bus.” He said all of those abducted were Hazara Shiite Muslims. Farahi said a search and rescue operation was underway in the Zabul province. Abdul Khaliq Ayubi, a local government official, said the gunmen all wore black clothing and black masks. “We contacted the Taliban through tribal elders but Taliban said they are not behind this kidnapping,” Ayubi told CBS News. He said the drivers of both buses had told authorities that the kidnappers spoke in a foreign language. “We believe they are Daesh (ISIS),” Ayubi said, adding that he had received reports of ISIS activity in his district recently and had reported it to provincial leaders.

Headline:  Libya could be next Syria without West’s help, minister warns

Libya’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Dayri has called for Western military support, saying the growing threat from jihadist groups threatened to turn his country into another Syria. “Time is running out,” Dayri told AFP in an interview on Tuesday. “Terrorism amounts to a danger not just for Libya and its neighbours. It is an intensifying threat to Europe. “Without a political solution, the country could get trapped in a full-blown civil war like in Syria,” he said. The North African country has collapsed into a bitter struggle between rival governments and militias since dictator Moamer Khadafi was overthrown and killed with Western help in 2011. Two parliaments compete for legitimacy in different parts of the country. Islamist militants control the capital Tripoli, while an internationally-recognised government has been relegated to the eastern city of Tobruk. There are also fears that the conflict is attracting an increasing amount of foreign jihadists, and a number of attacks have been claimed by the Islamic State group.

Headline:  Anti-Islamist Libyan general to meet with Israeli officials in Jordan

Libyan General Khalifa Haftar, who is attempting to form a coalition to fight Islamists in Libya, will reportedly meet with Israeli officials in the Jordanian capital of Amman. According to the U.K.-based Arabic newspapers Al-Quds Al-Arabi, Haftar secretly visited Egypt twice last week. On the trip, he received 400 containers of weapons to help fight Islamic extremists in Libya. The Egyptian military recently launched attacks on groups aligned with the Islamic State terrorist organization, in response to Islamic State’s murder of 21 Egyptian Christians. Egypt, along with its Arab allies such as Jordan, has called for international intervention in Libya to combat the growing threat of radical Islam. Some have compared Haftar’s efforts to combat Islamist terror to the approach of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi. Meanwhile, Libyan Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni on Tuesday criticized the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union for failing to support his government’s battle against a rival movement called the Libya Dawn, which seized the Libyan capital of Tripoli last year.

Headline: Algeria rejects proposal for Arab force for Libya

Algeria has rejected a proposal to create an Arab regional force to intervene in crisis-hit Libya, an Algerian diplomatic source has said. “The proposal includes formation of a ground force to intervene in Libya,” the source, requesting anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency. He said the proposal was tabled following the decapitation of 21 Egyptian nationals by militants affiliated with the Daesh militant group in Libya’s eastern city of Darnah. “But the proposal was rejected because intervention in other countries violates the code of the Algerian army,” the source said. Daesh is the Arabic acronym for the ISIL, which last year overran vast swathes of territory in both Iraq and Syria. The diplomatic source cited several reasons for Algeria’s decision to reject the proposal, including the proposed force’s “unclear objectives” and differences between Arab countries regarding intervention in troubled Libya.

Headline: Forced from Damascus, Hamas establishing itself in Turkey

Islamist group sets up ‘West Bank and Jerusalem Headquarters’ in Istanbul, taking advantage of deteriorating ties between Ankara and Jerusalem, using it as base for recruitment. Relations been Israel and Turkey have been on a slippery downward slope in recent years; of late, however, the situation has led to grave consequences beyond the realm of politics: Turkey has become a Hamas hotbed, and members of the organization’s military wing are undergoing military training on Turkish soil, with the knowledge, support and assistance of the local authorities. The US administration has appealed in recent months to the Turkish government to prevent Hamas military activity in its territory, arguing that Turkey is a member of NATO and that Hamas is viewed by most NATO members as a terrorist organization. The appeals have gone unanswered. For his part, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon has raised the issue in his talks with the defense ministers of various NATO countries on several occasions, including last week in India, where he attended a military exhibition. Ya’alon defined Turkey’s role in helping Hamas’ build its terrorist networks in the West Bank and the Gaza as “a cynical game on the part of a NATO member state.” Hamas set up its so-called West Bank and Jerusalem Headquarters in Istanbul immediately following the organization’s expulsion from Damascus in 2011. In 2013, Hamas underwent restructuring, and the organization expanded the activities of the Turkey-based headquarters, headed by Salah Al-Arouri, who was deported from Israel in the past. Among others, under him now in Turkey are 20 militants released as part of the Gilad Shalit deal, including the likes of Zaher Jabarin and Jihad Yarmur, who were involved in the murder of soldier Nachshon Wachsman.

A teenage student died Tuesday in Venezuela after being shot in the head during a protest against the government of Nicolás Maduro. The incident happened in the southwestern city of San Cristóbal. The boy, identified by the Associated Press as Kliverth Roa, was taking part in a protest when he was struck by a bullet from a rifle, said opposition council member José Vicente García, who is also president of the Human Rights Commission of the Municipal Council of San Cristóbal. Venezuelan media is identifying the boy as Kluiver Ferney Roa Núñez. García said that, according to a preliminary investigation, Roa was seriously injured when protesters clashed with a group of police officers who were trying to contain the demonstration. The councilman said the teenager died while being transferred to a medical center.

At least 12 people were killed in a suicide bomb attack at a bus station in the northwestern Nigeria’s city of Kano on Tuesday, barely five hours after a similar blast hit a crowded bus station in the country’s northeastern region, local police said. Police chief of Kano state, Ibrahim Idris, confirmed the 12 deaths, adding that the bodies of the two suicide bombers who carried out the attack were also found. The official declined to give the figure of the injured. The attack was carried out at the city’s Kano Line Motor park, near a newly-commissioned overhead bridge. Malam Ibrahim, a member of the local transport union at the park said the death toll might increase as rescue workers were still searching the area. Hours earlier, at least 14 people were killed when a suicide bomber struck a crowded bus station in the northeastern Nigeria’s town of Potiskum, according to medics at a local hospital. No group has claimed responsibily for the bombing, but local people have blamed the militant group Boko Haram for the attack.

Yemen’s Shiite rebels said Tuesday that President Abed Rabbou Mansour Hadi, who fled the rebel-controlled capital earlier this month and has begun reconstituting his authority in the south, is “wanted for justice.” The move escalated a crisis that threatens to split the Arab world’s poorest country between the Houthi rebels, who control the capital Sanaa and much of the north, and Hadi, who enjoys wide support in the formerly independent south. The growing chaos also threatens to undercut U.S. efforts to combat Yemen’s powerful Al-Qaeda affiliate, which has been linked to several failed attacks on the United States and claimed responsibility for the attack on a French satirical magazine last month. In the latest sign of the country’s growing lawlessness, a Frenchwoman working for the World Bank was kidnapped Tuesday in front of a ministry building in Sanaa, where several Western countries, including France, have shuttered their embassies. No one claimed responsibility for the abduction. The rebel-run state news agency SABA quoted the Houthis’ Revolutionary Committee as saying that they are monitoring the “suspicious” activities of Hadi. It did not say whether a formal arrest warrant has been issued.

Headline: Clashes in Indian Kashmir after rebel killed: police

Hundreds of protesters clashed with police in Indian Kashmir on Wednesday after government forces killed a suspected rebel in a gun battle, police said. Three soldiers were also wounded in the battle, which began on Tuesday when government forces cordoned off the village of Heff, around 50 kilometers (30 miles) from the main city of Srinagar, where they suspected rebels were hiding out. News of the man’s death brought hundreds of protesters onto the streets where they hurled rocks at police, who fired tear gas and live bullets into the air to disperse them. “At least 15 people were injured in the clashes, including nine policemen and a district administrator,” a police officer said on condition of anonymity as he was not authorized to speak to media. Another police officer said the dead man was a member of Hizbul Mujahideen, one of several rebel groups seeking independence for Indian-administered Kashmir or a merger with Pakistan. Kashmir has been divided between India and Pakistan since the two countries won independence from Britain in 1947. Both claim the scenic Himalayan territory in full.

Islamic State terrorists have abducted at least 90 people from Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria, a monitoring group that tracks violence in Syria said on Tuesday.
The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the militants carried out dawn raids on rural villages inhabited by the ancient Christian minority west of Hasaka, a city mainly held by the Kurds. Sunday’s offensive by Kurdish YPG militia reached within 5 km (3 miles) of Tel Hamis, an Islamic State controlled town south east of Qamishli, the Observatory said. At least 14 IS fighters died in the offensive, which involved Assyrian fighters, and eight civilians were also killed in heavy shelling by the Kurdish side which seized several Arab villages from Islamic State control, the monitoring group said.

A Seattle missionary has been kidnapped in Nigeria and the U.S. government is getting involved to help secure her release, the church she works for said Monday. Church officials said Rev. Phyllis Sorter, of the First Free Methodist Church, was abducted Monday morning from the Hope Academy compound in Emiworo, Kogi State, according to KING 5. “She was taken in front of her house by three guys with machine guns,” Richard Sorter, Rev. Sorter’s stepson, told Q13 Fox outside of a prayer service Monday night. “She is one of the most God-fearing people in the world and all she wants is for everybody to have a good life and to be happy — and equality,” Sorter added. The kidnappers were wearing masks and “came into the school premises shooting sporadically to scare away people before taking [the hostage] away into the bush”, Kogi state police spokesman Sola Collins Adebayo told AFP. The stepson said Phyllis — a graduate of Seattle Pacific University — built schools in Nigeria and taught children there for nearly 15 years.

Headline:    Alaska becomes third state to legalize recreational marijuana as ballot measure takes effect

Alaska on Tuesday became the third U.S. state to legalize the recreational use of marijuana, but organizers don’t expect any public celebrations since it remains illegal to smoke marijuana in public. In the state’s largest city, Anchorage police officers are ready to start handing out $100 fines to make sure taking a toke remains something to be done behind closed doors. Placing Alaska in the same category as Washington state and Colorado with legal marijuana was the goal of a coalition including libertarians, rugged individualists and small-government Republicans who prize the privacy rights enshrined in the Alaska state constitution. When they voted 53-47 percent last November to legalize marijuana use by adults in private places, they left many of the details to lawmakers and regulators to sort out. That has left confusion on many matters. The initiative bans smoking in public, but didn’t define what that means, and lawmakers left the question to the alcohol regulatory board, which planned to meet early Tuesday to discuss an emergency response.

Please don’t forget to subscribe to receive my daily prophecy up-dates. The Last Chronicles of Planet Earth February 23, 2015 Edition written by Frank DiMora.

At the end of my last prophecy seminar on February 11, 2015 I told those in the class to expect war in 2015.  Why did I say this?  Take a look at what Jesus said in Matthew 24:6-7. And ye shall hear of wars and rumours of wars: see that ye be not troubled: for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places.  For the past 5 years I have repeated my statement that because Iran would not stop their quest to get a nuclear bomb Israel would have to take action against Iran that would lead to war.  If you have been watching the news you are up to speed knowing that the time gap is closing very fast for Israel to take action to halt that bomb progress. Is Israel going to attack soon?  Take a look at the video below.  If there really is US troop movements to Israel it is happening just prior to the total solar eclipse which will take place on March 20, 2015 and the Blood Moon which will take place on April 4, 2015. We have seen in the past how major events have taken place during these heavenly signs. The next set of Blood Moons won’t show up until 2032-2033. There are many Pastors who are saying these next set of solar eclipses and Blood Moons are the ones Jesus warned us about for the last days.  I refer to Matthew 24 29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken”. Most of you who have watched any news in 2014 or 2015 have already witnessed the many rumors of war that have taken place in this short amount of time. Then in the latter part of 2014, ISIS began their major assault into Iraq and, Syria and, now they have moved into areas bordering Israel as well as just recently taking over much of Libya. Seems like the fighting is everywhere you look now but, it will get worse according to Christ as you can see from the Matthew 24 scriptures.

I wish I could tell you exactly how things are going to be played out but like you all I can do is watch as Jesus instructed all of us to do and, see how these things unfold.  There is one thing I can tell you for sure. I can tell you the exact names of the nations who are going to attack Israel as they are given to us in Psalm 83 and in Ezekiel 38.  Is it possible that the US is going to Israel knowing that when Israel goes into Iran to bomb their nuclear plants that Iran would counter that attack and make moves on Israel?  Could such an attack on Iran tick off the rest of the Muslims who are listed in the Psalm 83 war so much so that they would attack Israel for Iran?  As I said, only our Lord know for sure but one thing is very clear at this point. War Is Coming Very Soon!

If you have noticed I have stepped up in trying to finish my teaching on the book of Revelation. I have been doing a verse by verse teaching through the Revelation. I just finished part 36. Jesus has laid it on my heart to finish this work. I never know how many people will watch these YouTube videos but, that is not my concern as the Lord has a plan for each person and, Christ will direct the people He wants to my teaching as He sees fit. As a watchmen on the wall for Christ I am asking any of you who have not taken Jesus Christ as your Savior yet to please consider what you are seeing in the news.  I am sure that there are many of you who are watching the news not even knowing that you are seeing first hand Bible prophecy come to pass just as Christ warned it would.  Even nature itself is calling out to Christ to be delivered!  In my book I list all the reports concerning the mass bee deaths. I do this to show you little by little these important crop growers are dying off and, their death is going to have a huge impact on the global food supply. Did you notice in the Matthew 24:7 verse Jesus talks about  famines?  At the rate the bees are dying off one can see just one of the reasons why famines will occur. Are you taking notice that the list of birds, fish, and animals round the planet are also dying off in mass numbers?  So far in the beginning of 2015 we have already seen 115 reports of either birds, fish, or animals dying in mass numbers in 34 nations. This sign alone should be enough to tell you there is something major going on around the world that is killing off our food supply!

Headline: Iran is Deployed, ‘Planning War’ Along Israel’s Northern Border

Iran is seeking to open a “third front” against Israel using Hezbollah fighters on the Syrian Golan Heights, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday. Netanyahu said Tehran’s attempts to entrench itself along Israel’s borders was one of the biggest emerging security threats facing the Jewish state. “Alongside Iran’s direct guidance of Hezbollah’s actions in the north and Hamas’s in the south, Iran is trying also to develop a third front on the Golan Heights via the thousands of Hezbollah fighters who are in southern Syria and over which Iran holds direct command,” he said. Speaking at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting, Netanyahu said his ministers were to be briefed on “the security challenges developing around us, first and foremost Iran’s attempt to increase its foothold on Israel’s borders even as it works to arm itself with nuclear weapons.”

Headline: Al Qaeda-Linked Al-Shabaab Calls for Attacks on ‘Jewish-Owned’ Malls in UK, Canada & USA

The Somali al-Shabaab terror group linked to Al Qaeda has called on Muslims in the West to “answer the call” and attack “American and Jewish-owned” shopping malls in the UK, US and Canada. In the 77-minute video the speaker, whose face was covered, said, “We call upon our Muslim brothers, particularly those in the West, to answer the call of Allah and target the disbelievers wherever they are,” said a speaker wearing a military jacket, face covered. Suggesting the Mall of America – the largest mall in the United States – the speaker displayed coordinates for the site on the screen. The “twin cities” of S. Paul and Minneapolis are home to the largest population of Somali immigrants in the U.S. More than a few are known to have traveled from there to the Mideast and Africa to fight with radical Islamist terrorists. The threat has become a raison d’etre for America’s Department of Homeland Security, which was slated for shutdown this week. DHS Secretary Jeh Johnson said Sunday that the propaganda video released Saturday by al-Shabaab, made clear “why I need a budget.” The video also called for attacks on Oxford Street in London and two Westfield Malls in Stratford and White City as well as Canada’s West Edmonton Mall in Alberta – the largest shopping mall in North America.

Headline: Israeli Utility Begins West Bank Power Cuts

Israel’s state-owned electric company briefly cut power to two Palestinian cities in the occupied West Bank on Monday to press for payment of what it said was $492 million owed by the Palestinian government. “The Israel Electric Corporation limited for 45 minutes today the supply of electricity to five power lines in Nablus and Jenin,” the company said in a statement, adding that further cuts were possible. Nablus Mayor Ghassan Al-Shaka’a said the power went out in parts of the city and was gradually restored. “This is collective punishment,” he told Reuters, calling the blackouts politically motivated. Israel Electric Corp said in a statement it had “long warned … about a debt that has ballooned to more than 1.9 billion shekels over the years — but no solution has been found”. Shaka’a told Reuters that Israeli power cuts would do more damage to a Palestinian economy already hit by Israel’s withholding of the monthly transfer of more than $100 million in tax revenues that it collects on behalf of the PA.

Headline:  ISIS preparing to declare Islamic emirate in Lebanon: sources

Headline:   ISIS commander murdered outside Arsal

ISIS is preparing military plans to declare an Islamic emirate in Lebanon very soon to serve as a geographical extension of the so-called “Islamic State” announced by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in Iraq last year, security sources said. ISIS fighters have demanded support from the militant group in northern Syria to achieve this goal, the sources said. They added that the ISIS command has begun preparations to set up a military organizational committee tasked with running Lebanese affairs and considering Lebanon as part of its state. However, ISIS is facing difficulties in choosing a Lebanese commander for this mission. The reported appointment of the fugitive preacher Ahmad al-Assir for this post was merely a trial balloon, the sources said. They added that arrangements to form an ISIS command for the Lebanon emirate were taking place under the supervision of the group commander Khalaf al-Zeyabi Halous, codenamed “Abu Musaab Halous,” a Syrian who had played a key role in the ISIS offensive to capture the Raqqa province in 2013. In the meantime, an influential party in Lebanon has received important information indicating that ISIS is bent on recruiting more suicide bombers equipped with explosives belts to target Shiite gatherings in Beirut and the southern suburbs as well as French and Western interests, while the Iranian Embassy in Beirut, which was targeted with a deadly twin suicide attack in November 2013, is still vulnerable to another assault.

Headline: Egypt Suggests Pan-Arab Force to Fight ISIS

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has called for a pan-Arab military force to fight the Islamic State (ISIS). Speaking a week after Egypt bombed ISIS positions in Libya in retaliation for the terrorist army’s execution of 21 Egyptian Coptic Christians, al-Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said he believes in “coordination with our Arab brothers.” Judging by the Egyptian military’s far from superior past, it is no wonder the former general wants allies. The attack on Libya last week boosted Al-Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi’s popularity but also raises questions why he did not act sooner, before the hostages were beheaded. The aerial strikes also served to bury to put on the back burner, temporarily, at home, where he has been harshly criticized for detaining thousands of people for alleged terrorism during the crackdown on the Muslim Brotherhood. Al-Sisi admitted in his televised speech on Sunday, “I am sure there are many innocent people inside prisons. Soon many of them will be released according to the available permissions.”

Syria Headline:    Syria forces execute 10 children of rebels: monitor

Ten children were among at least 48 people killed in a Syrian village this week when regime forces executed six families of rebel fighters, a monitoring group said on Saturday. Tuesday’s executions took place in the village of Rityan, north of second city Aleppo, after regime forces entered that day during an offensive aimed at cutting rebel supply lines to the Turkish border, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Britain-based monitor said that villagers had discovered the bodies when they returned to their homes after the regime forces withdrew a day later. Five women and 13 rebels from the six families were among the dead. “The troops and militiamen knew exactly where they lived thanks to the informers who accompanied them,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman said. “There was no resistance except in one house where a rebel opened fire at troops before being executed along with his family,” he added.

Syria Headline:    Four killed in twin suicide bombings south of Damascus

Two simultaneous suicide attacks killed four people and wounded 13 on Monday in southern Damascus near a Shiite shrine, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported. The agency, quoting police, said the twin attack took place at a security checkpoint near the shrine of Sayyida Zeinab, a granddaughter of the Prophet Mohammed. “A civilian car had stopped at the checkpoint… and a terrorist got out wearing an explosive vest which he detonated,” SANA said, adding that seconds later a man who had remained in the car blew it up. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the bombing targeted a checkpoint manned by a pro-regime militia, just 10 kilometres (six miles) east of Damascus and on the road to the international airport. The Britain-based Observatory also reported that a rocket hit the Adra prison northeast of Damascus on Monday, killing four people and wounding 15. It did not say if the casualties were prisoners, guards or visitors.

Iraq Headline: Separate bombings leave 19 dead, injure dozens in Iraq

At least 19 people have been killed and dozens injured in separate bombings in Iraq, including a truck bomb attack on Shia fighters in the country, police say. The deadliest attack involved a bomber who drove his explosives-laden truck into a manned checkpoint near the northern city of Tikrit on Sunday, killing eight Shia fighters and wounding at least 15 others. Tikrit, situated 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, remains under control of ISIL Takfiri terrorists, though the Iraqi government and Shia groups maintain control of areas and roads leading into the city. In a separate incident, seven people were killed and 14 others wounded when a car bomb exploded near a chain of car shops in Baghdad’s western district of Baiyaa, police said. Elsewhere, an explosion near an outdoor market in the town of Yusufiyah, located about 32 kilometers (20 miles) south of Baghdad, left two people dead and 10 others injured. Another bomb blast on a commercial street in Baghdad’s southeastern district of Zafaraniyah killed two people and wounded six others. Meanwhile, authorities discovered four bodies with gunshot wounds to the head and chest in different areas of Baghdad. Dead bodies lying on the streets have become a common occurrence in recent years amid the widespread sectarian violence engulfing Iraq.

Iraq Headline: France deploys aircraft carrier against ISIS in Iraq – ministry

France has deployed its Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier against the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS) in Iraq, as part of the US-led military campaign, French media report, citing government officials. “The integration of the Charles de Gaulle in the operation… (in Iraq) begins this morning,” a member of Defence Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian’s staff told AFP. The agency reports that the first Rafale fighter jet took off from the aircraft carrier on Monday morning. The warship was sailing about 200 kilometres (120 miles) off the coast north of Bahrain in the direction of Iraq. Jets sent from the carrier reach Iraq twice as fast as those, flying from their base in the United Arab Emirates. France announced sending the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier for use in military operations against the Islamic State in Iraq in mid-January. The decision was made in the wake of the deadly Paris attacks, when Islamist gunmen killed 17 people at the offices of the satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo and a kosher supermarket.

Kurdish Headline:  ISIS Releases Video Purportedly Showing Caged Kurdish Fighters

The latest video from the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group purportedly shows 21 men believed to be Kurdish Peshmerga fighters paraded down an Iraqi street in cages set in the backs of 21 white pickup trucks. In the video released Saturday, titled “Healing the Chest of Those Who Believe,” the men wear orange jumpsuits and ISIS’s Black Standard flag is visible numerous times. All of the militants are dressed in black with only their eyes showing, similar to their appearance in other ISIS videos. A large crowd gathers in the street to view the procession, and many people take photographs. The video is similar to two others released by the terrorist group: The cage first appeared in the video showing Jordanian pilot Muadh al-Kasasbeh’s execution, and last week a video surfaced of 17 Kurdish Peshmerga being forced by militants to walk through an Iraqi town. The latter has called into question when and where the video released on Saturday was filmed, and whether it is linked to last week’s forced walk. The SITE Intel Group, a jihadist threat watchdog, believes the cage parade was filmed in Kirkuk, Iraq. Officials have not confirmed the authenticity of the video. The fate of the men also remains in question.

Mosul

Headline: Isis: Islamic State ‘moving Iraq’s HQs from Mosul to Hawija’ ahead of US-prepared offensive

Headline: The terrifying rise of ISIS: Map that shows how terror group’s tentacles now reach from Algeria to Afghanistan

Jihadi group Islamic State (Isis) is said to be relocating its Iraqi headquarters some 150km to the south in the Sunni-dominated town of Hawija, Sunni tribal fighters in Iraq told IBTimes US. IS has been running its operations in Iraq from Mosul, the country’s second largest city, since taking it over last year. Earlier in February, US officials disclosed that a coordinate military mission to retake the city involving some 25,000 Iraqi troops and Kurdish fighters was being set up. In preparation for the offensive, which is expected to start in April or May, the US has been providing weapons and training to Iraqi forces, while coalition warplanes bombarded IS positions in Mosul. Meanwhile, however, the Islamist group has consolidated its hold on Hawija, which lies some 35 miles east of the oil rich Kirkuk and the surrounding area. Since seizing the town in June 2014, IS has won the support of local residents and has recently started to increase its military presence in order to create its new Iraqi central command there, according to IBTimes US.

Last week’s Pentagon briefing outlined plans for Iraqi and Kurdish forces to retake Mosul from Islamic State, also known as ISIS. This strategy largely assumes that if ISIS is expelled from Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, pushed out of Anbar province and degraded in Syria, the organization will collapse because its narrative of victory will be tarnished and its legitimacy as a “Caliphate” will end. That may have been true some months ago. But ISIS has adapted more quickly than U.S. strategy has succeeded, and it is pursuing a deliberate strategy to offset its tactical losses in Iraq and Syria with territorial gains in the Mideast and globally. ISIS’s often stated objective is to “remain and expand.” This is not a mere defensive measure to preserve its combat power from destruction. Nor is it a mere recruiting slogan designed to replace some 6,000 ISIS fighters that Washington estimates have been killed since U.S.-led coalition airstrikes began in August. As Ms. Gambhir concludes in her recent Institute for the Study of War “ISIS Global Intelligence Summary,” open-source reporting indicates that ISIS is executing a complex global strategy across three geographic rings- the Interior Ring is at the center of the fighting and includes terrain the group is named for, specifically Iraq and al Sham—i.e., the Levantine states of Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Israel-Palestine. The “Near Abroad Ring” includes the rest of the Middle East and North Africa, extending east to Afghanistan and Pakistan. ISIS has claimed auxiliary operations or established what it calls “governorates” across this region. The “Far Abroad Ring” includes the rest of the world, specifically Europe, the U.S. and Asia. Here ISIS is most focused on nearby Europe, which it terms “Rome” as a reference to the Byzantine empire, the great power adversary in decline during the rise of the early Islamic caliphs. ISIS distinguishes between established Muslim lands and those that host Muslim diaspora communities, and it uses different but interlocking strategies in each ring to expand its influence.

Headline: Ukraine says cannot withdraw heavy weapons as attacks persist

Kiev accused pro-Russian rebels of opening fire with rockets and artillery at villages in southeastern Ukraine on Monday, all but burying a week-old European-brokered ceasefire deal. The Ukrainian military said it could not pull weapons from the front as required under the tenuous truce, as long as its troops were still under attack. The Ukrainian currency, nearly in freefall this month, fell a further 10 percent on Monday on fears that the truce could collapse. The central bank said it would impose import curbs to sustain the hryvnia. The value of Ukrainian debt also fell, with bonds now trading at 40 cents on the dollar. The reported shooting came closer to killing off the truce, intended to end fighting that has killed more than 5,600 people, which rebels ignored last week to capture the strategic town of Debaltseve in a punishing defeat for Kiev. Western countries still hope the truce can be salvaged if the rebels halt having achieved that objective. But Germany, whose Chancellor Angela Merkel was the driving force behind the peace deal, said in unusually strong terms that it was now clear that the ceasefire was not being implemented.

Headline: Proposed Deal With Iran Would Enable it to Develop Nuclear Weapons

Russia has offered Iran its latest Antey-2500 missiles, the head of Russian state defence conglomerate Rostec said on Monday according to media reports, after a deal to supply less powerful S-300 missiles was dropped under Western pressure. Sergei Chemezov said Tehran was now considering the offer, TASS news agency reported. Russia scrapped a contract to supply Iran with S-300 surface-to-air missiles under Western pressure in 2010, and Iran later filed a $4-billion international arbitration suit against Russia in Geneva, but the two countries remain allies. The United States and Israel lobbied Russia to block the missile sale, saying it could be used to shield Iran’s nuclear facilities from possible future air strikes.
There was no immediate response to Chemezov’s comments from Iran, Israel or the United States.

Headline: Iranian-Backed Militias Cause a Political Crisis for Iraq

Headline: Hezbollah suffers Aleppo losses

debkafile’s exclusive military and intelligence sources have discovered a large-scale Iranian airlift is in progress for bringing thousands of Shiite fighters to the Syrian Mediterranean port of Latakia to reinforce the Syrian army forces falling back from the key city of Aleppo. Some of the flights are taking off from Baghdad airport. The Syrian rebels in heavy fighting Thursday and Friday, Feb. 19-20 repulsed a Hizballah-backed Syrian army offensive to recapture the town and took scores of Hizballah fighters prisoner. The incoming reinforcements are being transferred directly to the Aleppo battle-front in an effort to stabilize it and reverse the Syrian army’s retreat. The incoming reinforcements are made up of Iraqi, Afghan and Pakistani Shiite militiamen. The fact that Tehran was able to raise this force in less than 24 hours from the Syrian army’s defeat in Aleppo demonstrates Iran’s total military and strategic commitment to swift action for averting a Syrian-Hizballah retreat from a key front of the four-year old civil war. The Iranian planes are taking two routes to Syria, starting out either in Baghdad or Tehran. In Baghdad, they touch down in the military section of the international airport and collect the Iraqi Shiite militiamen destined for the Syrian battlefield. This step necessitated the consent of the Iraqi government and Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi. The Iranian operation therefore exposes two exceedingly disturbing developments which are causing Israel’s army chiefs to burn the midnight oil: The fall of the Abadi government under Tehran’s sway is one; and Iraq’s direct involvement for the first time in the military actions of the Syrian civil war.

A bombing by suspected Islamic State (IS) militants in Libya has killed at least 40 people and wounded dozens in the eastern town of al-Qubbah. Three bombs exploded, targeting a petrol station, a police station and the home of parliamentary speaker Agila Salah, a security source told BBC News. According to an online statement, IS fighters said they struck in retaliation for Egyptian air strikes. Egypt launched strikes after IS killed 21 Egyptian Christians it had abducted. The al-Qubbah attack is one of the deadliest in Libya since the toppling of Col Muammar Gaddafi four years ago. Meanwhile, Libya’s Islamic State affiliate claimed responsibility for an attack on the Iranian embassy in Libya’s capital on Sunday. Two bombs detonated at the facility’s main gate but produced no casualties, according to Libyan and Iranian officials. Marzieh Afkham, Iran’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, condemned the attack, saying “a handmade bomb in front of the residence of the former Iranian ambassador in Tripoli only led to trivial material damages.” The Iranian ambassador was not in the building at the time of the attack, and Iran said the facility has been empty since operations were suspended there in 2012. A similar attack last month on the empty Algerian embassy in Tripoli wounded three people and was claimed by Libya’s IS affiliate.

Headline:  Islamic State ‘Caliphate’ In Libya Depends On Tunisian Foreign Fighters And Desert Training Camps

Headline:   Egypt sends planes to Tunisia to evacuate Libya returnees

The Arab Spring’s success story has turned into a one of the most fertile breeding grounds for fighters joining the Islamic State group. Tunisia, where a 2011  revolution overthrew a corrupt regime and sparked a season of Middle Eastern upheavals, has emerged as a relatively stable and well-off country with a secular, democratic government. But that narrative is undermined by Tunisia’s newfound role as the prime supplier of manpower to the Islamic State group — and its proximity to Libya may turn it into a major source of combatants in that country’s civil war, which threatens to pull in Egypt and European countries. Tunisia has been the number one provider of foreign fighters in Syria so far. As of last October, there were an estimated 3,000 Tunisians who had traveled to Iraq and Syria and joined extremist groups like ISIS. Many of them were trained in the country, where a lawless desert area on the border with Libya offers ideal conditions for jihadis to train undisturbed. For years, the Tunisian desert has been home to training camps for various jihadist groups, and the army has been unable to shut them down. Camps were flush with Libyan weapons smuggled out when Moammar Gadhafi’s regime collapsed in 2011, and Tunisians were the most common trainee. At least one of those camps now belongs to ISIS and, until recently, fighters were trained there and then sent to Syria through Turkey with the help of a recruiter who was usually Tunisian. Earlier this month, the government reported that it was able to stop 9,000 would-be fighters en route to that camp, but that 540 already had completed their training and left the country.

Hundreds of Turkish forces in armoured vehicles have entered war-torn northern Syria to evacuate troops guarding a historic tomb, demolishing it and moving the remains to a different site. The remains of Suleyman Shah, who died in the 13th Century, were moved to a site in Syria closer to the border. Turkey considered the shrine sovereign territory. Islamic State (IS) militants in the area had threatened to attack it last year. The government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, which has lost control over much of northern Syria as a result of the country’s civil war, condemned the incursion as “flagrant aggression”. It said that Turkey had informed its Istanbul consulate about the operation but had not waited for Syria’s consent. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said his government and the armed forces had carried out a “successful operation which is beyond all kinds of appreciation”.

The girl, who appeared no more than 10 years old, got out of a tricycle taxi in front of the cell phone market and detonated her explosives on Potiskum’s main market day, according to survivor Anazumi Saleh, who suffered injuries to his head. Officials have not immediately ascertained the girl’s identification or her age from her remains. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing but the attack bears all the signs of similar bombings by Boko Haram and raises fears that Nigeria’s home-grown Islamic extremists are using kidnap victims as bombers. It is unclear whether the girls and young women in many recent attacks have set off the explosions themselves, or whether the detonations are controlled remotely. Separately, a new group releasing propaganda for Boko Haram denied a Ministry of Defense statement that troops Friday seized back control of the border garrison town of Baga. It has been reported that military from Nigeria and neighboring Chad are retaking towns and villages held for months by Boko Haram even as the extremists attack other northeastern communities. Scores of civilians have been killed in such attacks in recent days.

Headline:  Yemen’s Shiite rebels threaten to arrest, charge ministers

A bomb exploded near a military academy in the Yemeni capital Sanaa on Monday evening, security sources told Reuters, in a neighborhood that is a main stronghold of Shi’ite Muslim Houthi fighters. The blast did not cause any casualties and was being investigated, a security official was quoted as saying to the defense ministry’s official news outlet, 26 September. Security in Yemen has frayed since the Houthis formally took power in the capital this month, raising fears of an all-out civil war and of an increase in attacks by radical Sunni militants loyal to al Qaeda. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula – regarded by the United States as the most dangerous affiliate of the global militant group – has taken credit for many past bombings against the Houthis, whom they regard as apostates.

Headline: Myanmar says more than 130 dead in fighting near China border

Myanmar’s army Saturday said more than 130 people had died in a deepening battle with rebels in the northeast, declaring it would not rest until stability was restored to the border area which tens of thousands have fled. Fighting raged in the remote Kokang region of Shan state where conflict erupted on February 9 with insurgent attacks on soldiers that triggered a military onslaught, prompting at least 30,000 civilians to escape into bordering China. In the first press conference since clashes began, defence ministry spokesman Lieutenant General Mya Htun Oo said the conflict had killed 61 military and police officers, and around 72 insurgents. More than 100 military members have been injured since fighting broke out. “The fighting is strong… Because of serious fighting, our helicopters are helping,” he told reporters in the capital Naypyidaw. “We will not retreat until we get stability.” He did not provide figures on civilian deaths in and around Laukkai town, where the conflict has centred, as efforts to evacuate remaining communities have been hampered by an attack Tuesday on a local Red Cross convoy which wounded two aid workers — leading relief groups to officially suspend rescue missions.

Headline: Who Won the Greek Showdown in Europe?

“Complete” surrender by the Greeks. “Major victory” for the eurocrats. To those who have followed Greece’s financial crisis for five years, there wasn’t much doubt who won the latest round Friday when the region’s finance ministers struck a deal to keep the bailout on track. Even German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble, who said he didn’t “want to make it more difficult for them,” concluded Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras will have a “difficult” time selling the agreement at home. That’s because Tsipras’s populist rhetoric of ending austerity was overpowered by the united front he faced. A “complete political surrender to the world of reality” was how Erik Nielsen, London-based global chief economist of UniCredit Bank AG, put it. Societe Generale SA and Berenberg Bank both labeled it a “u-turn” by Tsipras, who won election Jan. 25 promising an end to budget cutting. “If the deal holds, it would be a major victory of common sense over populism,” said Holger Schmieding, chief economist at Berenberg in London, who cut his probability of Greece leaving the euro area to 25 percent from 35 percent. “The taming of Tsipras would show that Europe’s ‘tough love’ approach is working.” While Tsipras says skirting national insolvency meant “we won a battle, but not the war,” economists say he may not have managed even that. That’s because the basics of the existing aid deal he fought against are still intact.

Headline:  Oil slide could trigger Opec emergency meeting

Headline: Obama expected to get Keystone bill on Tuesday

Members of Opec have discussed holding an emergency meeting if crude continues to slide, according to Nigeria’s oil minister, in a sign of their growing alarm over the impact of a lower oil price on their economies. The comments by Diezani Alison-Madueke come three months after the cartel’s decision to hold production at 30m barrels a day, even as the oil price has plunged since mid-June. That move, driven by Saudi Arabia and its Gulf allies, marked a sharp deviation from Opec’s traditional strategy of adjusting production to keep prices high. The group’s main objective is now to defend market share, despite dramatically reduced revenues. The price plunge has forced energy companies all over the world to rewrite their investment plans, and caused a major slowdown in the US shale oil industry. But it has also thrown the fiscal balances of big oil producers such as Nigeria, Venezuela and Russia into disarray. “Almost all Opec countries, except perhaps the Arab bloc, are very uncomfortable,” said Ms Alison-Madueke, who as president of Opec is responsible for liaising with member countries and the producer group’s secretary-general in the event of an emergency meeting. If the price “slips any further it is highly likely that I will have to call an extraordinary meeting of Opec in the next six weeks or so”, she said in an interview with the Financial Times. “We’re already talking with member countries.” But market analysts say it is highly unlikely that Saudi Arabia, Opec’s de facto leader, will agree to such a meeting.

Headline:  India struggles with deadly swine flu outbreak

Indian health officials are struggling to contain a swine flu outbreak that has killed more than 700 people since it took hold in mid-December. The number of cases has doubled since last week to more than 11,000. Critics have accused the government of failing to distribute medicines, but officials insisted the situation was under control. This year’s outbreak of the H1N1 virus, which causes swine flu, is the deadliest in India since 2010. The northern state of Rajasthan has been worst affected. Health authorities across India have launched TV and radio campaigns to tell people about precautions they can take to avoid the flu. Health Minister JP Nadda attempted to rebuff reports of drug shortages. “If any medicine store refuses to give medicines after showing a medical prescription, it should be reported to the authorities and action will be taken,” he said. He said there was no need to panic, and insisted the government was monitoring the situation closely.

Headline: Man’s death leads to discovery of new virus in Kansas, CDC reports

The CDC has discovered a new virus that may have contributed to a Kansas man’s death, the agency announced Friday. Named the Bourbon virus after the county where the patient lived, the virus is likely spread by tick or insect bites, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. A 50-year-old man suffered multiple tick bites in the spring of 2014 while working outside on his property, the CDC said in an article published in the agency’s “Infectious Diseases” journal. The man fell ill over the next two days, went to a doctor on the third day, was hospitalized and died of a heart attack 11 days after becoming sick, the CDC said. Though the CDC only has one case to work with, the agency said “it is likely that Bourbon virus is spread through tick or other insect bites.” The Bourbon virus is part of a group of viruses linked to tick or insect bites in Europe, Asia and Africa, the CDC said. This is the first time a virus in this group, known as thogotoviruses, has been known to cause illness in the United States, the CDC said.

Two people have died from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, pushing the total number of deaths from the virus in the Kingdom to 385. Another two people have been infected with the virus and two others have recovered from the disease in various parts of the Kingdom within 24 hours, the Health Ministry announced on Saturday. chairman of the ministry’s command and control center Dr. Abdulaziz Abdullah Bin Saeed said the ministry has been using the Hisn electronic system in all government and private hospitals to check all suspected coronavirus cases. He said the cases will be kept in the hospitals until the medical checkups have confirmed whether they are infected or not. Keiji Fukuda, assistant director general of the World Health Organization (WHO), in a press conference in Riyadh on Saturday appreciated the measures taken by the ministry to contain the spread of the virus. He said he had noted a remarkable improvement in these measures since his last visit. “There are command and control centers in about 20 areas and the arrangements for tests are commendable,” he added. Fukuda described the virus to still be ambiguous and said infections were being reported in the Kingdom and some other countries. He said: “The WHO is still dealing with the coronavirus as an emergency event which is not causing international anxiety. “A number of world organizations have joined hands to curb it.” Since the virus was first discovered in the Kingdom in September 2012, a total of 902 people have contracted it and almost 390 patients have died of it since then.

Randy Berry, currently the consul general in the Netherlands, will promote human rights for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals, Secretary of State John Kerry said. A longtime foreign service officer, Berry has served at U.S. posts in Bangladesh, Egypt, Uganda and South Africa, and speaks Spanish and Arabic. “Defending and promoting the human rights of LGBT persons is at the core of our commitment to advancing human rights globally — the heart and conscience of our diplomacy,” Kerry said in a statement. He cited overturning laws that still criminalize same-sex activity in more than 75 countries as a specific priority. The State Department has said it planned to appoint an openly gay diplomat to the post.

Headline:     12 hospitalized due to MDMA overdose on Wesleyan campus

Ten Wesleyan University students and two visitors received medical attention after taking a party drug known as Molly over the weekend on campus, including some who attended a rave music show, school officials said Monday. Eight people were still hospitalized Monday, university President Michael Roth said. The school became aware of the incident early Sunday morning after several students showed up seeking treatment at a hospital near campus, university spokeswoman Lauren Rubenstein said. Two students had been flown by helicopter for treatment in Hartford, 20 miles north of the campus in Middletown. Molly is a term used to describe a refined form of Ecstasy, a synthetic drug also known as MDMA. It can drive up body temperature and cause liver, kidney or cardiovascular failure. Dr. Mark Neavyn, chief of toxicology at Hartford Hospital, said users who believe they are taking Molly are often receiving different kinds of designer drugs, with ranges of purity and potency making the health risks unpredictable. He said testing is underway to confirm what drugs the Wesleyan patients took.

Headline: Dozens of new craters suspected in northern Russia

Respected Moscow scientist Professor Vasily Bogoyavlensky has called for ‘urgent’ investigation of the new phenomenon amid safety fears. Until now, only three large craters were known about in northern Russia with several scientific sources speculating last year that heating from above the surface due to unusually warm climatic conditions, and from below, due to geological fault lines, led to a huge release of gas hydrates, so causing the formation of these craters in Arctic regions. Two of the newly-discovered large craters – also known as funnels to scientists – have turned into lakes, revealed Professor Bogoyavlensky, deputy director of the Moscow-based Oil and Gas Research Institute, part of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Examination using satellite images has helped Russian experts understand that the craters are more widespread than was first realised, with one large hole surrounded by as many as 20 mini-craters, The Siberian Times can reveal. ‘We know now of seven craters in the Arctic area,’ he said. ‘Five are directly on the Yamal peninsula, one in Yamal Autonomous district, and one is on the north of the Krasnoyarsk region, near the Taimyr peninsula. ‘We have exact locations for only four of them. The other three were spotted by reindeer herders. But I am sure that there are more craters on Yamal, we just need to search for them. ‘I would compare this with mushrooms: when you find one mushroom, be sure there are few more around. I suppose there could be 20 to 30 craters more.’ He is anxious to investigate the craters further because of serious concerns for safety in these regions.
