Headline:   THE TEMPLE INSTITUTE CONDUCTS UNPRECEDENTED PASSOVER OFFERING PRACTICE DRILL

In preparation for the upcoming festival of Passover, this past Wednesday (5 Nisan – 25 March) the ‘Priestly Training Academy’ established by the Temple Institute held a Passover offering practice drill that was documented by professional photographers. This was the most accurate and authentic reenactment of this service to have taken place in nearly 2,000 years. The Temple Institute is currently producing an educational documentary film which will depict the various stages of the Passover offering. A DVD is also in the works for the benefit of yeshivot, seminaries and schools, and all who wish to study the details of this important subject. The Kohanim who participated in this drill, all true descendants of Aaron, all wore authentic Priestly garments and recited the appropriate ‘blessings’ ( in practice mode) which applied to each stage of the commandment’s fulfillment. The event was accompanied by blasts from silver trumpets, and the song of the Levitical choir. Other stages of the drill included: examination of the lamb for blemishes, the priests bringing the animal to the Temple courtyard, the shechita and receiving the blood which is brought to the corner of the altar, skinning and separation of the inner parts, and the roasting of the whole lamb as required by the Divine command, in a special Passover oven designed and built for this purpose.

Headline:   Palestinians join ICC with Israelis in sights

The Palestinians formally gain membership of the International Criminal Court on Wednesday with the aim of pursuing Israelis for war crimes, despite uncertainty over the move’s wider ramifications. The accession is another step in the Palestinian diplomatic and legal international campaign, which gained steam in 2014. It has uncertain consequences, not only because it is highly unlikely Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israelis will find themselves being tried at the ICC, but also because it constitutes a new deterioration in the strained relationship. But the Palestinians are beyond caring. Exasperated after decades of failed negotiations with Israel, with no perspective for the state they have been yearning, they have decided to take their case to the international arena. On January 2, the Palestinians moved to join The Hague-based court in a process that will be finalised on April 1, setting the scene for potential legal action against Israeli officials for alleged war crimes. “Palestine has and will continue to use all legitimate tools within its means in order to defend itself against Israeli colonisation and other violations of international law,” said senior Palestinian official Saeb Erakat.

Headline:   New Gaza-bound ‘Freedom Flotilla’ expected to sail this summer

A new “Freedom Flotilla” is scheduled to embark for Gaza in two months’ time, organisers said on Tuesday. The voyage is scheduled to begin in the first half of the year, which means the flotilla could set sail within weeks, Mazen Kahel, an organiser with the European Campaign to end the Siege on Gaza, told MEE. Like its 2010 predecessor, this year’s flotilla aims to challenge Israel’s blockade of the Gaza Strip which has been in place since 2007. Former Tunisian president Moncef Marzouki has given his “full support” to the mission. He is expected to take part and will be on one of the boats, several organisers have confirmed. “Marzouki has always been engaged with the cause and has openly supported the Palestinians in his time of power,” Kahel told MEE. Negotiations are currently underway with other political, religious and business figures, but their names have yet to be confirmed and will be announced at a later date, Kahel added. Activists from across Europe, the US and the Middle East will participate in the flotilla, organised by a string of civil society groups and NGOs working under the Freedom Flotilla Coalition. Three to four boats are currently undergoing preparation for the voyage, but several more could yet join. The boats are expected to depart from several European ports, including one in Greece and possibly Turkey, although no specific information is being released as yet.

Headline:  Yemeni rebels shell Aden as Saudi coalition launches more airstrikes

Yemen’s Shiite rebels and security forces loyal to the former president launched a fresh offensive Monday against the southern city of Aden, shelling it and battling local militias, but were pushed back by at least two airstrikes on the fifth day of a Saudi-led air campaign, security officials said. The rebels, known as Houthis, meanwhile accused the Saudi-led coalition of bombing a displaced persons camp in the northern rebel stronghold of Saada, killing 40 people, including women and children. The report was carried on the rebels’ TV network. However, witnesses told The Associated Press that the camp — used to house displaced people from an earlier conflict that ended five years ago — is now occupied by Houthi forces and that most of those killed were fighters. It was not immediately possible to resolve the conflicting accounts. Yemeni security officials say the combined force of Houthis and Saleh loyalists is positioned about 19 miles east of Aden, near the southern city of Zinjibar. The rebels have used artillery to target pro-Hadi militias known as the Popular Committees. Battles are also underway near the airport. At least two airstrikes targeted the rebels, forcing them to retreat, the officials said. There was no immediate word on casualties. The account of the fighting was confirmed by four military and security officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. Emboldened by the airstrikes, the Popular Committees have largely held their ground in Aden province and still control most of the city. The death toll since the airstrikes began Thursday has reached 86, with some 600 people wounded, according to Abdel-Nasser al-Wali, head of a local medical center in Aden. Meanwhile in Sanaa, a series of airstrikes shook the city overnight and early Monday morning. The strikes have targeted militants, jets, air defense systems and Scud missile launch pads that could threaten Saudi Arabia. Yemen’s foreign minister called on Tuesday for Arab ground intervention against the Houthis “as soon as possible.” Asked in interview by Al Arabiya News Channel’s sister channel Al Hadath whether he sought Arab ground intervention, Riad Yassin said: “Yes, we are asking for that, and soon as possible, in order to save our infrastructure and save Yemenis under siege in many cities.” Yassin also revealed that Yemeni President Abdrabbu Mansour Hadi will be officially asking to join the Gulf Cooperation Council within the coming days. Yassin added that the war that has plagued Yemen is the doing of the Houthi rebels. For six days, a Saudi-led coalition of ten regional countries has bombed Iran-allied Houthi fighters and army units linked to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Supporters of ISIS have condemned the Saudi-led airstrikes on rebel Houthi fighters in Yemen, claiming in online forums and Twitter that the actions were a veiled attempt by the United States to interfere in the Middle East and propagate an American agenda. “We will not allow America to interfere in the Arab world by using an Arab proxy. Arabs will only succeed when they leave the control of the Americans and move outside their circle of influence and control,” a well known radical user, whose pen name is translated as “What hour?” wrote. The same user continued, arguing that the U.S. shouldn’t be involved in Middle Eastern affairs at all, that the ancient schism between Sunnis and Shiites was a conflict that ought to be fought without western influence. “The ongoing war in the area is mostly an internal one, one that is fought between people who follow the rules and justice of Allah in its most basic form, and between the traitorous and corrupted ruler,” the user wrote. “The revenge is not only against the evil Shiites, and not only against the tyrants, but against those who provide them with the weapons and the missiles they use to draw out blood.”

Headline:  Khamenei sends Iranian navy to Bab el-Mandeb Straits

Control of the Red Sea Bab el-Mandeb Straits passed Tuesday, March 31 to pro-Iranian Yemeni forces when the Yemeni Army’s 117th Brigade loyal to the former Yemeni President Ali Saleh handed positions guarding the waterway to two Houthi commando battalions trained by Iranian Revolutionary Guards. This is revealed by debkafile’s military and intelligence sources. In another development Tuesday involving Iran’s spreading tentacles, debkafile’s military sources reveal that unidentified aircraft bombed Burak, a small military base in the Fezzan province of southwestern Libya, which serves Iran as a transit store for arms purchased in Sudan for the Palestinian Hamas. The weapons, which recently reached the Libyan base through Chad, were destroyed. They were scheduled to be smuggled through Egypt and Sinai and onto Gaza. Western military sources attributed responsibility for the bombardment to the Egyptian or Israeli air forces. Both Israel and Egypt have declined to comment on the report. To strengthen Iran’s grip on the key Red Sea gateway, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has ordered two naval task forces to sail to the Red Sea. They are to fend off a Saudi-Egyptian offensive to dislodge the Houthi battalions now holding a point linking the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and Persian Gulf. The naval task forces are being sent to draw a sea shield around the Houthi forces to defend them against Saudi-Egyptian assaults. This maneuver was orchestrated by the Al Qods Brigades chief Gen. Qassem Soleimani. Our sources report that the 33rd task force set out on its mission Tuesday night from the Gulf port of Bandar Abbas.

Rebel forces led by al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra (JN) wrested control of Idlib City from the Assad regime on March 28, 2015. Removing the regime from a second provincial capital is arguably the biggest rebel victory since the fall of al-Raqqa to JN and rebel forces in March 2013. It represents a turning point in the Syrian civil war that is likely to alter the trajectory of the conflict in coming months, with implications for how rebels wage war in 2015. JN and Islamist rebel forces have achieved shocking success in reinvigorating the rebel campaign with the seizure of Idlib City. This is likely to provide momentum to the JN-Islamist axis in Syria at the expense of moderate rebel forces, and hinder efforts to foster a political solution to the conflict.  JN and rebel forces seized the northern provincial capital during a swift four-day assault, preceded by days of indirect fire bombardment. The assault exhibited highly effective command and control, which was made possible by a newly formed “operations room” named Jaysh al-Fatah. The operations room had participation from JN; Islamist groups Jund al-Aqsa, Harakat Ahrar al-Sham al-Islamiya (HASI), Faylaq al-Sham, and Ajnad al-Sham; and a few other local groups. By evening on March 27, JN claimed the fall of half of the city and shortly after noon the following day, the Jaysh al-Fatah operations room declared the complete “liberation” of the city. JN immediately raised a JN flag above the governorate building, and tweeted videos purporting to show Idlib civilians celebrating the capture of the city by JN and rebel forces.

Syria Headline:   IS executes at least 37 civilians in central Syria: monitor

The Islamic State group Tuesday executed at least 37 civilians, including two children, in a raid on a regime-held village in Hama province of central Syria, a monitor said.
IS “executed at least 37 people, including women and children, by burning, beheading, and firing on them” in the village of Mabujeh, said Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Syrian state television reported that 44 people were killed and 21 injured in the raid. Regime forces lost control of the city Saturday to a coalition of Islamist forces led by Al-Qaeda affiliate Al-Nusra Front.

Iraq Headline:  Iraq premier: Troops in center of Islamic State-held Tikrit

Iraqi forces battled Islamic State militants holed up in downtown Tikrit, going house to house Tuesday in search of snipers and booby traps, and the prime minister said security forces had reached the heart of the city. In a statement on Twitter, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced the “liberation of Tikrit” and congratulated Iraqi security forces on their “historic milestone.” But an official statement from his office said the troops “hoisted the Iraqi flag” over the Salahuddin provincial headquarters in Tikrit and are moving to control the entire city. Abdul-Wahab al-Saadi, the commander of the Salahuddin operation, said his forces fighting from the west were still 300 meters (325 yards) from the center of Tikrit.

Iraq Headline: Bomb attack kills 6 people north of Iraq capital

At least six people, including four Iranians, have reportedly been killed after a bomber targeted a bus carrying Shia pilgrims north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. Police on Tuesday confirmed six people were among the dead in a terrorist attack that took place in the Iraqi town of Taji, located 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of Baghdad. The bus of Shia pilgrims was returning from the holy city of Samarra when it came under attack by a bomber, who detonated his explosives as the pilgrims were getting off the vehicle at a gas station. Samarra lies 110 kilometers north of Baghdad and is home to the shrines of the tenth and eleventh Shia Imams, Ali al-Hadi and Hassan al-Askari.

Headline:  Putin says Russia will fight for the right of Palestinians to their own state

Vladimir Putin has said Russia will fight for an independent Palestinian state, and called for the issues of the Middle East to be resolved through peaceful means. Despite international criticism over Russia’s own role in the Ukrainian crisis, Mr Putin was hailed last week by a St Petersburg Cossack group for his ability to “bring order and stop wars”. In an address to the Arab League summit in Egypt on Saturday, Mr Putin spoke against foreign intervention in countries’ internal disputes and spoke of the role Russia can play in diplomatic channels. While Russia openly opposes the stance of US-backed Israel on the Gaza crisis, its position in the Middle East is complicated. Mr Putin is one of Iran’s key allies, but as he spoke on Saturday the core nations of the Arab League engaged in air strikes on the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen. He told the summit this weekend: “Palestinians have the right to establish an independent and habitable state with a capital in East Jerusalem. “Russia will continue to contribute to achieving this goal through bilateral and multilateral channels,” he said.

Headline:   Russian analyst urges nuclear attack on Yellowstone National Park and San Andreas fault line

A Russian geopolitical analyst says the best way to attack the United States is to detonate nuclear weapons to trigger a supervolcano at Yellowstone National Park or along the San Andreas fault line on California’s coast. The president of the Academy of Geopolitical Problems based in Moscow, Konstantin Sivkov said in an article for a Russian trade newspaper on Wednesday, VPK News, that Russia needed to increase its military weapons and strategies against the “West” which was “moving to the borders or Russia”. He has a conspiracy theory that NATO – a political and military alliance which counts the US, UK, Canada and many countries in western Europe as members – was amassing strength against Russia and the only way to combat that problem was to attack America’s vulnerabilities to ensure a “complete destruction of the enemy”.

In a curiously timed allegation coming on the eve of a key deadline for nuclear talks, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard on Monday claimed a U.S. drone strike killed two of its advisers in Iraq — an allegation the U.S. disputed. “We are looking into this, like we do all claims, but we don’t think we did it,” a spokesman for the U.S.-led coalition based in Kuwait told Fox News, as Pentagon officials pushed back on Iran’s claims. The Guard said on its sepahnews.ir website the strike happened March 23. This would appear to be after the U.S.-led coalition began providing intelligence and surveillance assistance for the Iraqis in their campaign to retake the Islamic State-held city of Tikrit — but before the U.S., on March 25, began launching airstrikes at the Iraqi government’s request. The Guard identified the dead as Ali Yazdani and Hadi Jafari, saying they were buried Sunday. It called them advisers, without elaborating on whether Iran contacted Iraqi or U.S. forces after the strike. Officials in the Pentagon would not speculate if the claims made by Iran are linked to the Tuesday deadline over nuclear negotiations in Switzerland between Iran and six other nations including the U.S. Iran reportedly has been making new demands for concessions in the run-up to that deadline.

Tunisian security forces decimated the leadership of a Tunisian jihadi group linked to al-Qaida’s North African branch, including the man identified as the “operational chief” of the attack this month on the National Bardo Museum that killed 22 people, mostly foreign tourists, the interior minister said Sunday. Najem Gharsalli said Khaled Ben Hamadi Chaieb, also known as Lokman Abou Sakhr, an Algerian, handled the operational end of the March 18 attack. Two gunmen were killed in the attack. Dozens of arrests have been made, five security officials fired and an officer charged with surveying the museum jailed. Gharsalli proclaimed the “beginning of the war against terrorism,” and revealed that Tunisia has acquired new equipment, “including drones.” The announcement came as tens of thousands of Tunisians marched, joined by a handful of foreign leaders for a ceremony after the march to the National Bardo Museum. Among those present were French President Francois Hollande and Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi.

Headline:  Turkey helped Islamists take over Idlib, Syrian military source accuses

A Syrian military source accused Turkey on Monday of helping Islamist rebels to stage an assault on Idlib, a provincial capital which fighters seized at the weekend. The source declined to comment on the situation in Idlib, citing security considerations, but a monitoring group has confirmed the Al-Qaida linked Nusra Front and allies now control Idlib and said the Syrian air force bombed the city on Monday. The fall of Idlib, 30 km (20 miles) from the Turkish border, marks only the second time in the Syrian civil war that Damascus has lost control of a provincial capital. The first was Raqqa, which the ultra-radical Islamic State group has turned into the de facto capital of its self-declared caliphate. Echoing more general comments by President Bashar al-Assad, the military source accused both Turkey and Jordan of supporting the insurgents in their Idlib offensive, saying they were “leading operations and planning them”. The insurgents were using advanced communication apparatus that had been supplied to them via Turkey, the source added. The Turkish foreign ministry declined to comment.

Headline: Boko Haram kills 41, prevents hundreds voting in Nigeria

Boko Haram extremists killed 41 people, including a legislator, and scared hundreds of people from polling stations in the northeast, but millions voted across Nigeria Saturday in the most closely contested presidential race in the nation’s history. In electoral violence elsewhere, three people including a soldier were shot and killed in political thuggery in southern Rivers state, and two car bombs exploded at polling stations in the southeast but no one was injured, according to police. All the Boko Haram attacks took place in northeastern Nigeria, where the military Friday announced it had cleared the Islamic extremists from all major centers, including the headquarters of their so-called Islamic caliphate. Earlier, before dawn, Boko Haram extremists invaded the town of Miringa in Borno state, torching people’s homes and then shooting them as they tried to escape the smoke. Twenty-five people died in the attack, Borno state Gov. Kashim Shettima told a news conference in the city of Maiduguri. “They had sent messages earlier warning us not to encourage democracy by participating in today’s election,” said Mallam Garba Buratai, a Miringa resident who witnessed the attack. Guinean President Alpha Conde has declared a 45-day “health emergency” in five regions in the west and south-west of the country over Ebola. The restrictions include the quarantining of hospitals and clinics where new cases are detected, new rules on burials and possible lockdowns. The Ebola outbreak began in Guinea in December 2013. In January, the World Health Organization reported a steady drop in cases in the three epicentre countries. But renewed concern has been triggered by fresh setbacks in these countries – Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Mr Conde said he was declaring “a reinforced health emergency for a period of 45 days in the prefectures of Forecariah, Coyah, Dubreka, Boffa and Kindia” in a statement published in national media. The focus of the virus “has shifted to our country’s coastal areas,” he said. He added: “Wherever the need may be, throughout this period, measures of restriction and confinement will be taken.” It is a first for the country since the outbreak began, Reuters reported. On Friday, Sierra Leone began a three-day nationwide lockdown sparked by fears the virus was making a comeback in some parts of the country.

Airborne particulate matter wafting off American cattle yards contains antibiotics, bacteria, and antibiotic-resistant DNA, a new study finds. Environmental tests on the spread of antibiotics have been performed in the past, but this is the first time researchers have examined aerial dispersion. The work suggests airborne transmission may be contributing to an emerging global health problem, where doctors find it increasingly difficult to treat life-threatening infections. For some time now, scientists have worried that we may be entering a “post-antibiotic era,” when the drugs that once defeated potentially fatal infections are no longer effective. Simply put, the bacteria causing infections in many cases are now immune to (or “resisting”) the drugs. Since antibiotic-resistant bacterial DNA, if imbibed in water or consumed in meat, can be transferred to humans, many researchers say misuse and overuse of veterinary pharmaceuticals may be responsible, in part, for this global health threat. Large, commercial food operations rely on veterinary drugs, including antibiotics, to promote bigger growth of the animals. However, after the animals excrete the drugs, these antibiotics enter the environment via runoff, leaching, and the spread of manure.

Super Typhoon Maysak increased strength Tuesday as it moved westward over the Pacific Ocean toward the Philippines. It struck several islands of the Federated States of Micronesia, southeast of Guam, during the weekend with over 10 inches of rain in six hours reported on the island of Chuuk. Widespread damage, including roofs torn from homes and the destruction of houses made of tin, was also reported. The Yap Islands, with a population of 12,000, were expected to receive sustained winds of 119 mph, the equivalent of a Category 5 hurricane, late Tuesday and early Wednesday, the U.S. National Weather Service in Guam said. Maysak is then expected to head westward and strike the Philippines on Sunday or Monday with sustained winds of about 120 mph and gusts up to 150 mph.

Amnesty International said Thursday Palestinian rocket fire during the 2014 summer war in Gaza had killed more civilians in the Gaza Strip than in Israel. Such deadly attacks on civilians on both sides constituted “a war crime,” it said. The damning report urged armed Palestinian groups to end attacks on civilians in Israel and to protect those in the Gaza Strip from the effects of such attacks. Amnesty said rocket attacks had killed six civilians in Israel, including a child, but that other rockets aimed at the Jewish state had fallen short and killed at least 13 civilians, 11 of them children, in Gaza.

In a conciliatory move towards warming relations with Palestinians and the U.S., Israel announced Friday it will resume transferring millions of dollars in tax revenues to the Palestinian Authority. Three months ago, Israel suspended the payments after the Palestinians referred Israel to the International Criminal Court in The Hague for possible war crimes. But newly re-elected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu approved the transfer of withheld funds Friday based on “humanitarian concerns and in overall consideration of Israel’s interests at this time,” a statement from Netanyahu’s office said, the New York Times reported. Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon, the Israeli military, and Shin Bet—Israel’s internal security agency—made the recommendation to Netanyahu to continue transferring tax money to the Palestinian Authority—which adds up to more than $100 million per month. The Jewish state will release to the interim government in Ramallah the frozen funds that have accumulated since February, less payments for services provided by Israeli entities, including the Israel Electricity Corporation, the water authority and hospitals, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported.

Headline:  France to Push for New UN Resolution on Israel-PA Peace

France plans to begin talks at the United Nations on a new Security Council resolution to revive Israeli-Palestinian peace prospects, Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said Friday, according to the AFP news agency. Fabius told reporters at UN headquarters in New York that discussions on a text would start “in the coming days.” The Security Council in December rejected a resolution that would have set a deadline for reaching a final peace deal and pave the way to the creation of a Palestinian state. The United States had voted against the measure but was spared from resorting to its veto after eight council members including France voted yes, one vote short of the nine needed for adoption. “I hope the partners that were reluctant will be less reluctant,” Fabius said Friday, according to AFP. “It is necessary to move forward to have a solution to this problem,” he added.

The Syrian military, backed by fighters from Hezbollah, used heavy artillery to close in on the city of Zabadani near the border with Lebanon on Friday, Lebanese Hezbollah-run al-Manar television reported. It showed footage of fighters in a mountainous area using heavy weapons around the city and showed the body of at least one enemy combatant. The channel said the operation, which was coordinated with Syrian air force bombardments, was aimed at recapturing the whole area. Syrian forces backed by pro-government fighters have regularly clashed with insurgents in the mountainous area north of the capital Damascus. Armed groups in the area include al Qaeda’s Syria wing Nusra Front as well as insurgent brigades.

It has lost control over Yemen… and fears that Yemen now belongs to the people.” “If the war was against Israel, we would have been partners in the war, but not if it’s against an Arab peoples,” Nasrallah said. “The Palestinian people are still calling on you,” he said, noting that a large portion of the population are Sunnis and yet their calls for assistance were not met by unified force like the one organized against the Houthis.

Headline:  Egypt’s ruling of Hamas as terror group possibly annulled

A lawyer who successfully petitioned an Egyptian court to brand Hamas a terror organization has withdrawn the claim, leading to some reports in Arab media Friday that the move annulled the ruling. But others claimed it still stood, at least for now. According to various Arab media reports, attorney Samir Sabry, who had originally argued that Hamas was involved in attacks against Egyptians and should thus be dubbed a terror group, pulled the motion after the state appealed the court’s decision Sabry explained that he didn’t want the court ruling to interfere with Cairo’s role as a mediator between Hamas and Fatah in Palestinian reconciliation efforts, according to the Cairo Post. While the Cairo Post said Sabry’s withdrawal effectively annulled the court’s ruling, it’s status remained unclear on Friday. Jordan-based Al Bawaba News stated that the move did not automatically invalidate the decision, and that the court would need to decide on its fate. Further court deliberations would reportedly be held on Saturday.

Security Council with suggested elements for a resolution that would impose an arms embargo on the Shiite rebels who have thrown Yemen into turmoil and caused its Western-backed president to flee. As the Saudi-led coalition presses its military campaign against the Tehran-backed Houthis in Yemen, Iranian press outlets have published reports on the Houthis’ purported ability to dramatically escalate the conflict. Fars News Agency reported Friday that the Houthis were preparing to shut the key Bab al-Mandeb strait linking the Gulf of Aden to the Red Sea. “There are confirmed reports showing that preparations [by Houthi forces] are underway to close Bab al-Mandeb Strait by using ground-to-sea missiles,” the Iranian news agency cited informed sources as saying. “This defensive scenario has been under study for several months now.” Fars added that the “takeover of [Mokha] port facilitated [Houthis’] access to Bab al-Mandeb,” in reference to reports earlier in the week that the Iranian-backed fighters had entered the western port town, which is located approximately 70 kilometers north of the strait. A top US military official stressed Thursday after Saudi Arabia launched its air strikes on Houthi military positions in Yemen that Washington would work to ensure the security of the Bab al-Mandeb strait. “We would work in conjunction with our GCC (Gulf Cooperation Council) partners to ensure that those straits remain open,” US Central Command chief General Lloyd Austin told a US Senate hearing. “It is one of our core interests to ensure that we have free flow of commerce through [Bab al-Mandeb and Hormuz].” As part of the Saudi-led “Operation Decisive Storm,” Egypt has dispatched warships southward to Bab al-Mandeb while two US destroyers have reportedly deployed to the area.

Warplanes struck near the presidential compound in the Houthi-controlled Yemeni capital of Sanaa around dawn on Friday, residents reported. Earlier air strikes south of Sanaa in the early hours of Friday appeared to target military installations affiliated with former president Ali Abdullah Saleh, a powerful Houthi ally. Meanwhile, Yemen’s Houthi rebels made broad gains in the country’s south and east on Friday despite a second day of Saudi-led air strikes meant to check the Iranian-backed militia’s efforts to overthrow President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi. Shi’ite Muslim Houthi fighters and allied army units gained their first foothold on Yemen’s Arabian Sea coast by seizing the port of Shaqra 100km (60 miles) east of Aden, residents told Reuters. The advances threaten Hadi’s last refuge in Yemen and potentially undermine the air campaign to support him. The losses came as the spokesman for the Saudi-led operation, Brigadier General Ahmed Asseri, told a press conference in Riyadh that defending the Aden government was the campaign’s “main objective.” “I want to confirm that the operation itself has as its main objective to protect the government in Aden,” Asseri said. “The operation will continue as long as there is a need for it to continue,” he said.

Syria Headline:    Syrian government shells kill 18 in south, activists say

Syrian government airstrikes and shelling in the country’s south killed at least 18 people on Thursday, including three children, opposition activists said. The attacks come amid heightened clashes in southern Syria between government forces and rebels who seized the nearby ancient town of Busra Sham the previous day. Thursday’s shelling struck an area known as Daraa al-Balad in the city of Daraa. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said 18 people were killed while an activist in Daraa province, Ahmad Masalma, put the number at 21. The activists said the death toll is likely to rise because many of the wounded were in critical condition.

Islamist rebels made fresh advances Friday on the edges of Idlib city in northwest Syria, after fierce clashes that have left dozens of dead, a monitoring group said. “The fighters have advanced on the northwestern and southeastern sides of the city,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. “There are very violent clashes, and last night 26 militants and four regime soldiers were killed,” he told AFP. An activist from the area said civilians were trapped in their homes. “The humanitarian situation is very difficult. There are refugees from other parts of the country who are in Idlib,” said Ibrahim al-Idlibi. On Tuesday, a new coalition of Islamist rebels launched a coordinated attack against Idlib city, which is held by Assad regime forces. Calling itself “The Army of Conquest,” the coalition is led by Al Qaeda affiliate the Al-Nusra Front and includes several other Islamist groups.

By Day 2 of the American airstrike campaign against militants holed up in Tikrit, the mission appeared beleaguered on several fronts on Thursday: Thousands of Shiite militiamen boycotted the fight, others threatened to attack any Americans they found, and Iraqi officials said nine of their fighters had been accidentally killed in an airstrike. In Washington, American military leaders insisted that things were going according to plan. They said that they were stepping into the Tikrit fight only after the Iranian- and militia-led advance on the city had stalled after three weeks, and that they welcomed working solely with Iraqi government forces. Gen. Lloyd Austin, the head of the United States Central Command, told a Senate hearing on Thursday that no Shiite militias remained in Tikrit. While the withdrawal of Iranian-led Shiite militias was one of the preconditions for the Americans to join the fight against the Islamic State in Tikrit, the sudden departure of three of the major groups risked leaving the Iraqi ground forces short-handed, especially if other Shiite militiamen also abandoned the fight.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has said “the West” is encroaching on Russia and fomenting internal unrest, in his first foreign policy speech in a month. He told a meeting of his internal intelligence service, the FSB, on Thursday (26 March), that “they are using their entire arsenal of means for the so-called deterrence of Russia: from attempts at political isolation and economic pressure, to large-scale information war and special services operations”. He noted that Nato is “building up its infrastructure near our borders” and said the alliance’s creation of an anti-ballistic missile shield is designed “to violate the existing nuclear parity”. “The situation … will not change for the better if we succumb and yield at every step. It will only change for the better if we become stronger”, he added. He also said “Western special services continue their attempts at using public, non-governmental and politicised organisations to … discredit the authorities and destabilise the internal situation in Russia”. Meanwhile, The head of the legislature in Russia’s Chechnya region says that Russia will provide arms to Mexico if Washington supplies weapons to Ukraine. Chechen Parliament Speaker Dukvakha Abdurakhmanov said the arms would be aimed at reigniting U.S.-Mexican disputes over “territories annexed by the United States in the American states of California, New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado, and part of Wyoming.” “We will perceive arms shipments to Ukraine as a signal to respond in kind,” Abdurakhmanov said in a March 24 statement posted on the Chechen parliament’s website. Abdurakhmanov is a close associate of Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed strongman who rules Chechnya.

U.S. negotiators are said to have given up ground on demands that Iran be forced to disclose the full range of its nuclear activities at the outset of a nuclear deal, a concession experts say would gut the verification the Obama administration has vowed would stand as the crux of a deal with Iran. Until recently, the Obama administration had maintained that it would guarantee oversight on Tehran’s program well into the future, and that it would take the necessary steps to ensure that oversight would be effective. The issue has now emerged as a key sticking point in the talks. Concern from sources familiar with U.S. concessions in the talks comes amid reports that Iran could be permitted to continue running nuclear centrifuges at an underground site once suspected of housing illicit activities.

Somali special forces stormed a Mogadishu hotel where Muslim extremists from Al-Shabaab had mounted a deadly attack Friday, first exploding a car bomb at the gate and then mounting a siege of the compound frequented by government officials. The elite soldiers poured into the Maka-Mukarramah Hotel, where as many as four members of the terrorist group were holed up and several civilians were trapped after the attack that left at least nine people dead, local police said. Sporadic gunfire could be heard inside the compound, and police said terrorists were holding off police until the special forces went in. Al-Shabaab claimed credit for the attack, in which at least a dozen were injured and the death toll was expected to rise. An unknown number of people were trapped in the hotel, although authorities did not characterize them as hostages.

The White House on Monday bluntly warned Israel that its occupation of Palestinian land must end, dismissing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s efforts to take back controversial campaign pledges. In unusually tough language that underscores the fracture in relations between Washington and Israel, White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough said “an occupation that has lasted for almost 50 years must end.” McDonough criticized Netanyahu’s pre-election pledge to block the creation of a Palestinian state — the supposed end goal of decades of fruitless peace talks — and he questioned Netanyahu’s efforts to undo the damage. “We cannot simply pretend that those comments were never made, or that they don’t raise questions about the Prime Minister’s commitment to achieving peace through direct negotiations,” he said. “The Palestinian people must have the right to live in and govern themselves in their own sovereign state,” he added.

Obama revenge for Netanyahu’s Congress talk? 1987 report on Israel’s top secret nuclear program released in unprecedented move. In a development that has largely been missed by mainstream media, the Pentagon early last month quietly declassified a Department of Defense top-secret document detailing Israel’s nuclear program, a highly covert topic that Israel has never formally announced to avoid a regional nuclear arms race, and which the US until now has respected by remaining silent. But by publishing the declassified document from 1987, the US reportedly breached the silent agreement to keep quiet on Israel’s nuclear powers for the first time ever, detailing the nuclear program in great depth. The timing of the revelation is highly suspect, given that it came as tensions spiraled out of control between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and US President Barack Obama ahead of Netanyahu’s March 3 address in Congress, in which he warned against the dangers of Iran’s nuclear program and how the deal being formed on that program leaves the Islamic regime with nuclear breakout capabilities.

US President Barack Obama expressed doubt Tuesday about the prospect of a peace agreement between Israel and the Palestinians emerging in the coming years under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and indicated that no decision would be made about changing Washington’s policy of shielding Israel at the United Nations until a new coalition is formed. Netanyahu “has a different approach” that rejects a two-state solution, making the possibility of a framework deal “dim,” Obama said at a press conference at the White House on Tuesday, a reference to pre-election comments made by the PM — since clarified — that a Palestinian state would not be created under his watch. After the election, Netanyahu walked back on those comments, telling NBC: “I don’t want a one-state solution. I want a sustainable, peaceful two-state solution” but stressing the grave dangers posed to Israel and the region and the rejectionist positions of the Palestinian leadership. The White House, however, has rejected Netanyahu’s clarification. Regarding US support for Israel at the UN, which includes using its veto at the Security Council, Obama said: “We are going to do that evaluation. We’re going to partly wait for an actual Israeli government to form.”

Jordan signed a $10 billion deal with Russia on Tuesday to build the kingdom’s first nuclear power plant, with two 1,000-megawatt reactors in the country’s north. The deal, signed in the Jordanian capital, Amman, with Russia’s state-owned Rosatom company caps efforts of the energy-poor kingdom to increase energy sufficiency and reduce imports. Jordan lacks any local energy sources and imports 96 percent of its electricity. The violence in neighboring Iraq and Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula has threatened and in many cases, completely cut off supplies. The kingdom’s Petra news agency said Jordan plans to finish construction of the plant in Amra in the country’s north by 2022. There are also hopes it will be fueled with uranium mined in Jordan.

Headline:   Syrian Army, Hezbollah seize two hilltops near border

Hezbollah and the Syrian army clashed with jihadi militants and seized two key vantage points along the Lebanese border Wednesday, ahead of a much-anticipated offensive in Qalamoun, according to security sources. The clashes that occured near the village of Flita, which is located only five kilometers from the border with Lebanon, left at least 19 rebels dead or wounded, the sources said. Syrian warplanes launched airstrikes against militant positions on the outskirts of the Lebanese border town of Arsal while the Syrian Army and Hezbollah captured two strategic hilltops on Flita’s outskirts. Hezbollah is said to be preparing for a decisive battle against Islamist militants in Syria’s Qalamoun. The offensive is set to target ISIS and Nusra Front gunmen holed up in the mountainous area along the border with Lebanon.

The slide toward war in Yemen has made the country a crucial front in Saudi Arabia’s region-wide rivalry with Iran, which Riyadh accuses of sowing sectarian strife through its support for the Houthis. Around 50 percent of the town’s residents belong to Syria’s Shiite minority, according to the Observatory. Syria Headline:  Syria rebels storm Idlib city in three-pronged attack

Syrian insurgents launched a bold three-pronged attack on the city of Idlib Tuesday, seizing territory on the outskirts of the government-held, largely isolated city in the northwest. Government media acknowledged that fierce fighting was underway throughout the day and said that regime forces had killed “dozens” of insurgents east and west of the city. The Local Coordination Committees network of anti-regime activists said that street fighting was underway in Idlib, as the rebels seized a school near the Justice Palace. As the fighting continued into the early evening, anti-regime activists and the opposition’s Civil Defense corps said a regime helicopter dropped a barrel bomb containing chlorine gas on the village of Binnish, 5 kms to the east of Idlib. They said approximately 30 people were wounded in the attack, but no fatalities were reported. Activists in the town of Qemenas, also in Idlib, reported a separate chlorine attack.

On Tuesday, clashes broke out between fighters of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) and pro-Syrian regime forces in the vicinity of the military airport, in the city of Deir ez-Zor, northeastern Syria. Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, civil rights activist Fayez Abdulaziz said that fierce clashes took place between the two parties in the vicinity of Deir ez-Zor’s military airport, following the defection of two soldiers from the regime’s army, amid mutual artillery fire on the outskirts of the airport. “One IS insurgent was reported killed in the clashes.” Meanwile, five people were reported killed and several others wounded in an air strike on the Hamidiya district by the pro-Assad air force, according to locals. Abdulaziz said that the pro-Assad warplanes targeted the residential neighborhood of Hamidiya with missiles, causing the collapse of an entire residential building. “The air attack led to the death of five civilians, including children, and the injury of several others,” the source added, pointing out that the injured were transferred to a nearby field hospital.

The offensive launched by a mixed force of the Iraqi army (10,000 troops) and Iranian-led Shiite militias (20,000) to capture Tikrit from the Islamic State has been thrown back, upsetting rosy US-led coalition predictions. The fighting for this important Sunni city died down – not because the Iraqi troops and their assorted Iraqi, Afghan and Pakistan Shiite allies had thrown in the sponge, but because the casualties inflicted on them by the Islamic State had become too heavy to bear and carry on fighting. This momentous debacle was first revealed in DEBKA Weekly 656 of March 20. Official figures have still not been released by Baghdad or the Iranian command staff headed by Al Qods Brigades chief, the legendary Gen. Qassem Soleimani. But the losses were crippling – some sources estimating them at roughly one tenth of the mixed force. Entire units were disabled and scattered. Some Iraqi army contingents fled the battlefield in disarray without a word to their officers – repeating their earlier performance last June when ISIS launched its first offensive to seize territory in Iraq. Iraqi and Iranian officers have since fallen to quarrelling over responsibility for the shambles, especially targeting the most prominent figure, Gen. Hadi Al-Amiri, commander of the Shiite Badr Brigade.

Iraq Headline:  Islamic State’s militants control military regiment north of Baghdad

Subsequent to heavy fighting against the Iraqi, militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) took control of the government-held “regiment 28″ of al-Karma, north of Baghdad on Tuesday evening. The regiment was located near a bridge and a military base from which the Iraqi army and the Shiite militia of the Popular Mobilization Forces, launched attacks on IS strongholds in al-Karma, north of Baghdad. Speaking to ARA News, local activists said that fierce clashes between Iraqi forces and IS insurgents began at the early hours of Tuesday in the vicinity of the “regiment 28″ in the Ziraa Dijla area near the Nibai district. The source added that IS militants were able to advance on the berm adjacent to the regiment and the al-Yabani Bridge, which was filled with explosives. “The bridge exploded and led to mass destruction in many nearby residential houses,” the sources told ARA News. ARA News could not verify the number of civilian casualties.

Russia called for a ban on American nuclear weapons in parts of Europe, saying the U.S. is breaking an international agreement by holding joint nuclear training missions with NATO allies that don’t possess such weapons. Using ships and airfields as well as training crews from non-nuclear states from the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in such exercises is “in direct contradiction to the letter and spirit” of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, or NPT, ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said in a statement on its website. “There can be only one solution,” Lukashevich said. The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency said that Iran has failed to provide the information or access needed to allay the agency’s concerns about the weapons potential of the country’s nuclear program. With the deadline nearing for international talks on constraining Iran’s nuclear program, Yukiya Amano, director general of the IAEA, said in an interview that Iran has replied to just one of a dozen queries about “possible military dimensions” of past nuclear activities. Amano said that Iran has provided only “very limited” information about two other issues, while the rest have not been addressed at all. “Recently, the progress is very limited,” he said. The IAEA is the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog, and its inspections are considered a key safeguard against countries using civilian nuclear energy technology to produce weapons. Failure by Iran to comply with IAEA demands would undermine the country’s efforts to win the lifting of U.N. sanctions.

At least seven people have lost their lives in a car bomb attack in the Afghan capital city of Kabul. “The initial reports from Kabul hospitals show seven killed and 22 wounded including women and children,” AFP quoted Sayed Kabir Amiri, the head of hospitals in the capital, as saying on Wednesday. The deadly attack took place near a police station in Muradkhani district close to the presidential palace, the Defense Ministry and the Ministry of Finance. Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for the Interior Ministry verified the attack, saying it involved a “car full of explosives that detonated near Police District 2 headquarters.” No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the deadly attack, but such assaults bear the hallmarks of those made by Taliban militants. Afghan authorities have launched an investigation to determine the motive behind the act of violence.

Headline:  Tunisia closes airspace to western Libya for security reasons

Tunisia has again closed its airspace for flights from western Libya, an official said on Tuesday, just days after allowing Libyan planes from Tripoli back for the first time in around six months. “We’ve suspended temporarily again Libya flights for security reasons,” the transport ministry official said, without elaborating. The moves come after militants killed 20 foreign tourists in an attack on the national museum in Tunis last week. Tunisian officials say the two gunmen had been trained at a jihadist camp in Libya, where Islamic State has made inroads. Tunisia is worried violence will spill over from Libya, where two rival governments fight for control four years after the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. Libyan airlines had been allowed only since last week to resume flights to Tunis from Tripoli and other airports in western Libya outside the control of the official government. The internationally recognized administration has been based in the east since losing control of Tripoli in August when an armed group seized the capital and parts of western Libya.

Headline:  German parliament to vote on Palestine recognition

The German parliament is set to vote on the recognition of a Palestinian state. A resolution proposed by Die Linke, a far-left opposition party, calls on the government in Berlin to “immediately recognize the State of Palestine in the 1967 borders” and to promote its full membership in the United Nations. No date has yet been set for a vote. Die Linke, which holds only 64 seats out of 631 in the Bundestag, is known to be extremely critical of Israeli policies, and its proposal on Palestine is therefore unlikely to attain the required majority, several experts on German politics said. Chancellor Angela Merkel, who heads the center-right CDU party — by far the largest faction in the Bundestag — opposes unilateral steps toward Palestinian statehood. If the German parliament were to adopt the resolution calling for the recognition of Palestine it would constitute a success, however symbolic, for the Palestinian cause, since Berlin is traditionally one of Israel’s staunchest defenders on the international stage, second only to the United States. German and Israeli officials declined to discuss the matter on the record.

The Turkish military exchanged fire with Kurdish rebels in southeast Turkey Wednesday in a rare violation of a two-year old cease-fire, part of a peace process between the militants and Ankara. Hundreds of civilians, including many children, have been abducted and are being used as human shields by Boko Haram extremists, a top Nigerian official confirmed Wednesday. Several hundred people were taken captive by the Islamic militants as they retreated earlier this month from Damasak in northeastern Nigeria, Mike Omeri, the Nigerian spokesman for the fight against Boko Haram, told Associated Press on Wednesday. He said he could not specify how many were taken captive but local reports say as many as 500 people were seized. When troops from Chad and Niger advanced toward Damasak, Boko Haram began taking captives, said Omeri. “Boko Haram … rushed to primary schools they took children and adults that they are using as shields to protect themselves from the menacing advance of troops,” said Omeri. “They are being used as shields by Boko Haram.” Damasak, near the border with Niger, was recaptured from Boko Haram on March 16. The mass abduction happened as the extremists were fleeing the advancing troops and information about the seizures of civilians has only been confirmed now.

Arab Foreign ministers will discuss on Friday a Yemeni request for military intervention against the Iranian-backed Shiite Houthi rebels, Ahmed Ben Heli, the Arab League’s deputy secretary general said. Greece has until Monday to show how it will follow through on reform commitments after the euro area ruled out speedy access to aid funds, three officials said following a conference call of finance ministry deputies. The euro zone’s other 18 members were adamant on Wednesday’s call that Greece needs to deliver specific plans to see any more bailout cash, the officials said. Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras needs to show that Greece can rebuild trust in its promises, they said. Finance deputies left the door open to 1.2 billion euros ($1.3 billion) that has been allocated to aid the banking system, as the deputies concluded that Greece can’t tap those funds on a technicality. As a result, Greece will have to show it will move ahead with the changes its creditors are seeking to get the bank-aid money or other bailout funds. At present, there are a huge number of countries – many with very large economies – whose debt-to-GDP ratios are so far out of balance that there is virtually no way they can ever be corrected, at least in one lifetime. And every one of them have very liberal or very progressive (i.e. “socialist”) taxpayer-funded public entitlement and benefits programs. What’s more, as their population ages, there are fewer and fewer citizens in the workforce of those countries to pay the taxes necessary to fund the government’s programs. What’s more, in most if not all of the countries with absurd debt-to-GDP ratios, it is politically impossible to “reform” the government benefits programs, meaning they will remain on autopilot until the countries themselves simply run out of a) money; b) credit; or c) both. International ratings agency Moody’s Investors Service Inc. downgraded Ukraine’s credit rating by one level from Caa3 to Ca, its second-lowest level, according to a report released here by the agency on Wednesday. Headline:  Swine flu death toll in Turkey rises to 42

The Health Ministry has announced that the number of people in Turkey who have died from the H1N1 virus, also known as swine flu, has risen to 42, meaning that 12 more people have died from the disease since Monday. A written statement from the ministry on Wednesday said a total of 42 people died from swine flu in Turkey, raising fears that the H1N1 virus would claim more lives. Health Minister Mehmet Müezzinoğlu said earlier in the day that 60 percent of those who died due to the virus had pre-existing medical conditions which made them more vulnerable. One of the people who died since Monday was a man in the southwestern province of Muğla. The 58-year-old man went to a hospital complaining of coughing and a high fever and was diagnosed with swine flu. He died on Tuesday at a hospital in İzmir, where he had been sent for treatment. Many people in Turkey have become alarmed by the recent deaths from the H1N1 virus. However, although the Ministry of Health admits that swine flu cases are on the rise as a seasonal occurrence, it maintains that the situation does not amount to an epidemic.

Headline:   PA Approaches Hamas, Islamic Jihad After Israeli Elections

The Palestinian Authority (PA) leadership has taken steps to “punish” Israel for the results of the 20th Knesset elections, releasing a document condemning the results in general and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu in particular. On Thursday, the Palestine Liberation Organization (the terror group behind the PA; headed by Mahmoud Abbas – ed.) met in Ramallah and made the following decisions:

• To condemn Netanyahu as “racist”, particularly after controversial remarks he made on the day of elections last week whereby he called on Israelis to vote to counteract a large voter turnout from the Israeli Arab population and after he briefly claimed that he would not continue to pursue the establishment of a Palestinian state;
• To continue to deepen Israel’s political and economic isolation, to expand the recognition of “the State of Palestine” and to gain support in the United Nations (UN) Security Council and other international institutions on the basis of 1949 Armistice lines with Jerusalem as its capital;
•  To call upon the Palestinian people to keep to the “Palestinian National Plan” and cling to their land;
• To complete the certification process for the PLO and the heads of various security agencies to join the International Criminal Court (ICC) and then to file “war crimes” complaints against Israel for building in Jewish-owned areas of Judea and Samaria (i.e. Area C) and to for retaliating to Hamas rocket fire in Gaza during Operation Protective Edge;
• To launch talks in Gaza with Hamas and Islamic Jihad to implement the existing agreements regarding national reconciliation and preparing presidential and parliamentary elections for the “unity government.” Hamas responded to the elections last week by pledging to recommit to reconciliation with Fatah, in order to better secure “Palestinian rights.”

Headline:       Israeli military prepares for possible violent uprising in West Bank

The Israel Defense Forces is preparing for the possibility of a violent uprising on the West Bank in the coming months. Still, the army does not necessarily expect a violent escalation in the wake of the results of the Israeli election, and they are aware that the Palestinians are imposing restraint in an attempt to prevent an uprising. The Central Command is presently completing a series of maneuvers and training exercises designed to prepare the forces for a scenario of confrontation with the Palestinians. In this context maneuvers were carried out in the Central Command, in the divisions and the brigades as well as training exercises in regular army and reserve units. In the past months there has been a large gap between the tense atmosphere in diplomatic relations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority, in light of the Palestinian request to join the International Criminal Court in The Hague and the Israeli reaction of freezing the tax money to which the Palestinians are entitled, and the situation on the ground.

Headline:     Jordan says it will help train Syrian rebels to fight ISIS

Jordan says it will help train Syrian rebels as part of its fight against the extremist ISIS, which controls parts of neighboring Syria and Iraq. The training is part of a regional effort also involving Turkey, Saudi Arabia and Qatar as hosts of training sites. The U.S. Congress has passed legislation providing $500 million for training about 5,000 rebels over the next year. Jordanian government spokesman Mohammad al-Momani said Monday that Jordan will train Syrians to “defeat the terrorism that has been killing their sons and daughters.” He would not say if training has already begun or where it would take place.

Headline: Egypt, Ethiopia, Sudan sign agreement on Nile dam

Leaders from Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan signed a cooperation deal on Monday over a giant Ethiopian hydroelectric dam on a tributary of the river Nile, in a bid to ease tensions over regional water supplies. The leaders said the “declaration of principles” would pave the way for further diplomatic cooperation on the Grand Renaissance Dam, which has stirred fears of a regional resource conflict. No details of the agreement were immediately released. Egypt, which relies almost exclusively on the Nile for farming, industry and drinking water, has sought assurances that the dam will not significantly cut the river’s flow to its rapidly growing population. Ethiopia, the source of the Blue Nile which joins the White Nile in Khartoum and runs on to Egypt, says the dam will not disrupt the river’s flow and hopes the project will transform it into a power hub for the electricity-hungry region. Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn told the gathering in Khartoum: “I reaffirm that Ethiopia’s Grand Renaissance Dam will not cause any harm to downstream countries.”

In three places in the bible it says that the Nile River will dry up: Isaiah 19:5, Ezekiel 30:12, and Zechariah 10:11.  There are several ways that a river could be dried up. God could directly dry it. Man could alter its course via use of a dam or lock system. Or time could make the river dry up or divert, and its course would be lost forever as the terrain naturally changed. This agreement has brought together the Ezekiel War countries of ancient CUSH (Ethiopia and Sudan). With all the wars and conflicts going on in the world, we constantly read of water shortages. With what we KNOW will happen, as stated by God’s Word, can you imagine the absolute disaster when the Nile is completely dry.

Syria Headline:    Islamic State moves west to attack Syrian army in Homs

Islamic State fighters attacked a military airport in Syria‘s Homs province on Monday as they pressed a westward offensive against government strongholds, a monitoring group said. Forays by Islamic State, which is strongest in the northeast and east, into the provinces of Homs, Hama and even Damascus pose a fresh challenge for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Syria’s army has seized control of a swathe of territory from Damascus through the cities of Homs and Hama to the western coast by defeating other, less powerful militias including rebels fighting under the banner of the Free Syrian Army. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the violence through a network of sources in the country, said Islamic State attacked a military airport in Tadmur, a town in Homs province, early on Monday. Syrian officials could not immediately be reached for comment, and the fighting was not reported on state media. Observatory head Rami Abdulrahman said 74 soldiers in Hama province had been killed by Islamic State, which he speculated launched both attacks to raise morale after losses to Kurdish forces in the northeast. The offensive followed a three-day battle that erupted on Friday further west in Hama around Sheikh Hilal village, the Observatory said. Islamic State was trying to cut the road from Hama to Aleppo, once Syria’s most populous city, it added.

Syria Headline:   Syrian Rebels Shell City of Aleppo, Killing at Least 13

Syrian rebels fired mortar rounds into government-held parts of the northern city of Aleppo during rush hour Monday, killing 13 people and wounding dozens, state-run TV and an activist group said. The violence was the latest in the flare-up in Aleppo, Syria’s largest city and once its commercial hub. Last month, Syrian troops and pro-government militias launched an offensive in an attempt to besiege rebel-held parts of the city and since then, intense fighting has been taking place on the city’s outskirts. On Monday, state TV aired footage from Aleppo showing the wounded and the dead as they were being brought to a hospital in the city. It said the shelling killed 13 and wounded as many as 30, some of whom suffered serious injuries. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, an activist group that has a network on the ground, gave a similar casualty toll.

Islamist rebels captured four crew members of a regime helicopter which crashed in the Idlib province of northwest Syria on Sunday, while a fifth serviceman was killed, a monitor said, reported AFP. “A regime helicopter was forced to land in the region of Jabal al-Zawiya in the northwest, which is a bastion of (Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate) Al-Nusra Front,” Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, told the news agency. “Four of the crew were captured and a fifth man was killed by armed men in a neighboring village,” he added. Abdel Rahman said the Al-Nusra Front held two of the servicemen, including the helicopter’s pilot. Official Al-Nusra Front accounts on Twitter published photos and videos with the caption “Helicopter pilot in the hands of jihadists,” according to AFP. The images depict the bandaged pilot sitting in front of Al-Nusra Front’s official flag.

Iraqi police officials say multiple bombings in Baghdad killed at least 13 people and wounded 22. The deadliest bombing struck a busy commercial street Monday in the Habibiya section of Baghdad’s Sadr City, killing at least 9 people and wounding 22, officials said. Earlier Monday in northwestern Baghdad, police say a bomb detonated near an intelligence branch of the Interior Ministry, killing four people, including two children. Hospital officials corroborated the casualty figures. All officials spoke anonymously as they are not authorized to brief media.

A group affiliated with the Islamic State published a list of addresses purportedly belonging to about 100 U.S. service members late Friday night, calling for their beheadings. The self-identified “Islamic State Hacking Division” claimed to have obtained the information by hacking into military servers, databases and emails, The Blaze reported Saturday. The online document contains names and photos along with some of the addresses. “[W]e have decided to leak 100 addresses so that our brothers residing in America can deal with you,” the group warned, The Blaze reported. “Kill them in their own lands, behead them in their own homes, stab them to death as they walk their streets thinking that they are safe,” the “Islamic State Hacking Division” added. A spokesperson for the Department of Defense told the website that the U.S. military was investigating the matter but could not confirm that the list was authentic.

Russia threatened to aim nuclear missiles at Danish warships if Denmark joins NATO’s missile defense system, in comments Copenhagen called unacceptable and NATO said would not contribute to peace. Denmark said in August it would contribute radar capacity on some of its warships to the missile shield, which the Western alliance says is designed to protect members from missile launches from countries like Iran. Moscow opposes the system, arguing that it could reduce the effectiveness of its own nuclear arsenal, leading to a new Cold War-style arms race. In an interview in the newspaper Jyllands-Posten, the Russian ambassador to Denmark, Mikhail Vanin, said he did not think Danes fully understood the consequences of joining the program. “If that happens, Danish warships will be targets for Russian nuclear missiles,” Vanin told the newspaper. Asked to respond, NATO spokeswoman Oana Lungescu said Denmark was a staunch member of the alliance and NATO would defend all allies against any threat.

A veto-proof, bipartisan majority of House lawmakers have signed an open letter to President Barack Obama warning him that any nuclear deal with Iran will effectively require congressional approval for implementation. A group of bipartisan senators have penned a bill mandating that any deal be reviewed and approved by Congress, but the House letter notes that lawmakers have another way to halt an agreement — by refusing to roll back sanctions. “Should an agreement with Iran be reached, permanent sanctions relief from congressionally-mandated sanctions would require new legislation. In reviewing such an agreement, Congress must be convinced that its terms foreclose any pathway to a bomb, and only then will Congress be able to consider permanent sanctions relief,” they write.

What we’re underlining is both the nature of the threat and what we’re doing with the existing resources and capabilities,” he said. Ghani will be travelling to the US along with Chief Executive Officer Dr Abdullah Abdullah. They are due to meet with President Barack Obama at the White House on March 24.

Headline:   Eight killed in air strike as Libya government aims to recapture capital

Eight civilians were killed in an air strike near Tripoli on Monday, the U.S. ambassador said, as Libya’s internationally recognized government pressed on with an assault to recapture the capital it abandoned to a rival faction last year. On Friday, the eastern-based government announced an assault to recapture Tripoli, even as the sides are both attending U.N.-hosted peace talks in Morocco. Western countries fear a total collapse of central authority in a country of 6 million people a short sail away from Europe. Islamist militants, including fighters who proclaim loyalty to al Qaeda or Islamic State, have taken advantage of the chaos to establish bases, attack oil fields and enter central regions. Forces loyal to the eastern government claimed responsibility for the air strike in Tarhouna, a town south of Tripoli, saying they had hit a military base. They also said they shot down a jet flown by Libya’s Dawn. “Terrible news today from Tarhouna where eight innocent displaced Tawergha killed in air strikes,” U.S. Ambassador Deborah Jones said in a tweet, referring to members of a minority group, thousands of whom were displaced after Gaddafi fell. “This violence serves no one’s interests,” said Jones, who is based outside Libya since most diplomats were evacuated from Tripoli last year. Headline:   Will ISIS Take The Credit For The Tunisia Museum Attack?

A daily news bulletin from ISIS suggests they may claim credit for Wednesday’s attack in Tunisia’s Bardo museum which left 23 people, including 18 foreign tourists, dead. It’s still not clear which group, if any, the gunmen were connected to, but the Islamic State appears poised to establish that the perpetrators were operatives loyal to them. Thursday’s official “daily news bulletin” from ISIS featured information about the attack in Tunis and praised the perpetrators. The news bulletin usually focuses exclusively on attacks and battle plans by the Islamic State, not any other terrorist groups. Featuring the Tunis attack in their bulletin implies that it was, at least in part, orchestrated by ISIS.

Headline:   Algeria temporarily evacuates Turkish workers after IS threat

Algerian authorities temporarily evacuated nearly 100 Turkish construction workers from a roadway project east of Algiers as a precaution after a threat from militants affiliated with Islamic State, security sources said on Monday. The measure underscores growing concern over militant attacks in North Africa following last week’s Bardo museum massacre of foreign tourists in Tunisia and Islamic State’s growing presence in neighboring Libya. The Turkish workers were evacuated for 24 hours as a “preventative” measure but returned to the Kabilye region east of the capital on Monday. A French tourist was kidnapped and beheaded in the area by Islamic State loyalists last year. “Things are under control, evacuation was just a preventive action, and they have resumed work this afternoon,” a security source who asked not to be named told Reuters. The Algerian leader of Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb is still in hiding in the eastern mountains. But a splinter group, the Caliphate Soldiers, declaring affiliation with Islamic State has also emerged. Last year, they kidnapped Frenchman Herve Gourdel and executed him.

Headline: Boko Haram crisis: At least 70 bodies found in Nigerian town

At least 70 bodies have been found dumped outside the town of Damasak in north-eastern Nigeria, after it was recaptured from Boko Haram militants. The victims appear to have been killed some time ago, as the bodies were partially mummified by the desert air. Troops from Niger and Chad seized Damasak on Saturday, ending months of control by the Islamist militants. Islamic State (IS) say its militants carried out suicide bombings on two mosques in the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, which killed at least 137 people. The attacks are the first claimed by IS – a Sunni group – since it set up a branch in Yemen in November. Both mosques were used mainly by supporters of the Zaidi Shia-led Houthi rebel movement, which controls Sanaa. Four suicide bombers attacked the Badr mosque, in the south of Sanaa, and the al-Hashoosh mosque, in the north of the capital, as worshippers gathered for Friday prayers. At the Badr mosque, one bomber entered the building and detonated his explosives while other people were caught by the second bomber near the main gates. Prominent Houthi cleric Al-Murtada bin Zayd al-Mahatwari, the imam of the Badr mosque, was among those killed, local media reported. Two more bombers attacked the al-Hashoosh mosque, with one detonating explosives near the entrance and the other running into the mosque itself. “Blood was running like a river,” said survivor Mohammed al-Ansi.

A group of 100 US personnel withdrew from the southern Al-Anad air base on Friday as Al Qaeda terrorists seized a nearby southern city. The move came a day after 137 people were killed and hundreds more were wounded in suicide bombing attacks at Shia Houthi mosques in the capital city of Sana’a. Responsibility for the attacks was claimed by Daesh, the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria terror group also known as ISIS.

30 people have died in Turkey this year from the H1N1 virus – more commonly known as swine flu. Turkey’s health minister Mehmet Muezzinoglu, told local media in Ankara that an additional five people have died from the influenza B virus and four others from the H3N2 strain in the 2014-2015 flu season, which typically runs from November to April. He confirmed that hospitals have been provided with 250,000 additional boxes of medicine to combat the various strains of the virus but said there is no need for additional measures at present as the peak period is over. “We have collected a total of 4,300 samples from patients, out of which 366 were cases of H1N1, known as the swine flu,” said Muezzinoglu. He added that the number of fatalities has increased in the past 15-20 days, but that this flu season overall has not been as intense as the 2013-2014 period.

Elcho Island has undergone a battering as tropical cyclone Nathan intensified off the Northern Territory coast. The Bureau of Meteorology said Nathan was estimated to be about 50km north/north-west of Galiwinku with wind gusts up to 140km/h late on Sunday, and its destructive core of sustained winds of about 120km/h continued to affect Elcho Island for several hours into Monday. Nathan was moving north-west at 12km/h and was set to increase in intensity to a category three level over open water, as it moved along the coast on Monday, before turning south-west towards land later in the night. Elcho Island was severely damaged by cyclone Lam in late February, and a storm tide, with damaging waves and dangerous flooding, was also expected between Elcho Island and Cape Shield.

Instead of using its veto to block United Nations Security Council pressure on Israel in peace negotiations with the Palestinians, the administration is now reportedly considering endorsing this effort. It is hard to overstate the seriousness of such a policy change.
