Headline:   Kerry: Unresolved Israel-Palestinian conflict fuels IS recruitment

Headline:    US denies Kerry linked stalled peace talks to rise of IS

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday called for a resumption of the Israel-Palestinian peace process, saying the talks were vital in the fight against extremism. “It is imperative that we find a way to get back to the negotiations,” Kerry said at a State Department ceremony marking the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. We need “to find a way to create two states that can live together side by side, two peoples, with both of their aspirations being respected,” Kerry added.  “I still believe that’s possible, and I still believe we need to work towards it.” He said the unresolved Israel-Palestinian conflict was fueling recruitment for the Islamic State jihadist group. “There wasn’t a leader I met with in the region who didn’t raise with me spontaneously the need to try to get peace between Israel and the Palestinians, because it was a cause of recruitment and of street anger and agitation,” Kerry said. “People need to understand the connection of that. And it has something to do with humiliation and denial and absence of dignity,” he added.

Headline:     Abbas: Settlers have no right to ‘defile’ Al-Aqsa Mosque- Calls for continued Palestinian presence at the mosque to defend it ‘by any means possible.’

Headline:     Abbas suggests ban on Jews at Jerusalem holy site

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called on Friday for the defense of the Al-Aqsa Mosque against Israel. Abbas stated that the holy site was being desecrated by settlers and that a continued Palestinian presence is required there to protect it. Speaking at the West Bank town of Albira, Abbas stressed that a Palestinian state without Jerusalem as its capital would be impossible. Palestinians “must be present at the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he said. “We must stop them (the settlers) from entering by any means possible. This is our mosque and they have no right to enter it and defile it.” The Palestinian president called for actions to replace words in regards to Jerusalem. “Al Quds,” said Abbas, referring to Jerusalem by its Arabic name, “has a special place in the heart of every Palestinian, of every Arab, be they Muslim or Christian, Al Quds is the jewel in the crown and the eternal capital of the Palestinian people, and without which there will be no state.”

Headline:     Israeli Air Force Ups Alert Over ISIS Crews Flying Captured Syrian MiGs

The Israeli Air Force has raised its alert level in the north over reports that Iraqi defector pilots are training ISIS air crews to fly missions using captured Syrian MiGs warplanes, Israel’s 0404 News said Friday. Israel is concerned that the militants might opt to use the aircraft to carry out attacks against Israeli targets, despite the Jewish State’s substantial air defence capabilities.

Headline:  Egypt: 3 policemen killed in blast

Egypt’s state-run news agency says three police conscripts have been killed in a rocket-propelled grenade attack in the Sinai Peninsula. News agency MENA reported that the slain men came under attack late Thursday while they were driving along a northern Sinai highway. MENA says two were killed instantly, and a third died of his wounds in an el-Arish hospital. A series of attacks, assassinations and suicide bombings has hit Egypt over the past year following the military ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi. An al-Qaida-inspired group known as Ansar Beit al-Maqdis has claimed responsibility for most of the major attacks, which mainly target police and the army. No group has yet claimed Thursday’s attack.

Syria Headline:  15 dead in regime air raids near Damascus: monitor

At least 15 civilians, including three minors, were killed in Syrian regime air raids on a rebel-held town near the capital on Friday, a monitoring group said. “At least 15 civilians, including three aged under 18, were killed in eight raids by Syrian military planes on several districts of the town of Douma,” 13 kilometres (eight miles) northeast of Damascus, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. On Thursday, regime air strikes killed 20 people, including two children and two women, in Jisrin to the east of Damascus, and two others in nearby Saqba, according to the Observatory. Closing in on Douma, a town of 200,000 residents, the army has seized control of Mleiha and Adra and has set its sights on Jobar and Ain Tarma, all towns to the east of the capital.

Iraq Headline:  Car bombs rock Baghdad, at least 24 killed

A string of car bombs killed at least 24 people across Baghdad on Friday night, medical and police officials said, amid a surge of violence in the capital. No one immediately said they were responsible for the blasts, but other attacks in recent weeks have been claimed by Sunni Muslim militant group Islamic State, which is battling the Shi’ite Muslim-led government and has seized large parts of neighboring Syria. A parked car blew up near a coffee shop in the Shi’ite area of Baladiyat, killing nine people and wounding 28, the officials said. Another blast killed nine and wounded 28 in the Sunni neighborhood of Slaikh, while a third car bomb blew up by a row of liquor stores in the affluent Karrada neighborhood, killing six and wounding 14 others, the officials added. The attack came the day after bombs killed 36 in Baghdad and areas bordering the capital.”

Headline: Islamic State flying three jets in Syria: monitor

Iraqi pilots who have joined Islamic State in Syria are training members of the group to fly in three captured fighter jets, a group monitoring the war said on Friday, saying it was the first time the militant group had taken to the air. The group, which has seized swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, has been flying the planes over the captured al-Jarrah military airport east of Aleppo, said Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the report and U.S. Central Command said it was not aware of Islamic State flying jets in Syria. U.S-led forces are bombing Islamic State bases in Syria and Iraq. The group has regularly used weaponry captured from the Syrian and Iraqi armies and has overrun several military bases but, if the report is confirmed, this would be the first time it has been able to pilot warplanes. “They have trainers, Iraqi officers who were pilots before for (former Iraqi president) Saddam Hussein,” Abdulrahman said. “People saw the flights, they went up many times from the airport and they are flying in the skies outside the airport and coming back,” he said, citing witnesses in northern Aleppo province near the base, which is 70 km (45 miles) south of the Turkish border. Witnesses reported the flights were at a low altitude and only lasted five to 10 minutes before landing, the Observatory said. It was not possible to reach the Syrian government for comment and state media did not mention the report. It was not clear whether the jets were equipped with weaponry or whether the pilots could fly longer distances in the planes, which witnesses said appeared to be MiG 21 or MiG 23 models captured from the Syrian military.

Headline: Philippine Militants Free 2 Kidnapped Germans

Two Germans kidnapped and held for six months in the southern Philippines were released Friday by a militant group just hours after it had threatened to behead one of them if no ransom payment was made, the Philippine defense chief said. The Abu Sayyaf group released Stefan Okonek and Henrike Dielen on southern Jolo Island, Defense Secretary Voltaire Gazmin said. Abu Sayyaf spokesman Abu Rami told radio station DXRZ in southern Zamboanga City that his group received 250 million pesos ($5.6 million) in ransom. He did not say who paid it. Gazmin said he was “not privy” to information about any ransom payment. “We’re happy they’re safe. I hope there will be no more” kidnappings, Gazmin said by telephone.

Headline: Libya: 18 killed in Benghazi fighting

At least 18 people were killed on Friday in heavy fighting between the Libyan National Army led by renegade General Khalifa Haftar and Islamist militant of Ansar al-Sharia group in the country’s eastern city of Benghazi, Al Arabiya correspondent reported. Some of the heaviest clashes were taking place around Benghazi University, where Islamist militants were reportedly holed up, the correspondent said. Benghazi Medical Centre said the dead were mostly soldiers and civilians fighting alongside the army in the central district of al-Majouri, AFP reported. Over 50 people have been killed since forces of retired General Haftar, backed by army units, launched on Wednesday what he called an operation to “liberate” Benghazi from Islamist militias. Friday’s clashes, which were the fiercest since the start of the operation, saw the two sides using weapons of all calibers in street fighting.

Headline: Cameroon says troops kill 107 Boko Haram militants

Cameroon said on Friday its forces had killed 107 fighters from Islamist sect Boko Haram in clashes in the north, an area that has seen regular cross-border raids by the Nigerian militants. News of the fighting coincided with an announcement from neighboring Nigeria that it had agreed a ceasefire with the movement after a bloody five-year insurgency – though there was no confirmation from Boko Haram. The clashes in Cameroon’s Far North region began after the militants crossed the border between the towns of Amchide and Limani on Wednesday and continued on Thursday from around 11 a.m. (6 a.m. EDT), said Defence Minister Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o in a statement. Eight Cameroonian soldiers were killed and seven wounded in the fighting, he added. A Boko Haram vehicle packed with ammunition and explosives was destroyed and Cameroon troops now controlled the area, the statement said. There was no independent confirmation and it was not possible to obtain comment from Boko Haram.

Headline: Fresh clashes in Hong Kong as pro-democracy activists regroup

Hong Kong riot police used pepper spray and baton charged pro-democracy protesters who mobilised en masse on Friday evening after a pre-dawn clearance of a major protest zone in the Chinese-controlled financial hub. Over a thousand protesters, some clad in protective goggles and helmets, thronged to the gritty and congested Mong Kok district after work and school on Friday evening, to try to reclaim sections of an intersection that police had cleared in a surprise raid early on Friday. Student leaders urged people via Facebook and social media to retake the area that has been a flashpoint for ugly street fights between students and mobs, including triads, or local gangsters, intent on breaking up their protracted and unprecedented protest movement. Demonstrators chanting “open the road” tried to break through multiple police lines and used upturned umbrellas to shield themselves from pepper spray. In the melee, police used batons and scuffled violently with throngs of activists, some of whom were wrestled away and taken into police custody. “It’s vital to keep this site,” said Joshua Wong, a bookish 18-year-old whose fiery speeches have helped drive the protests. “All the sites are very important. We will stay and fight till the end,” he said while standing atop a subway station exit and addressing the seething crowds below.

Headline: Arizona gay marriage: AG Tom Horne will not appeal ruling, same sex couples can marry immediately

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said he will not appeal a federal judge’s ruling that the state’s ban on same-sex unions is unconstitutional. Horne said the state will begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples Friday. “I think it’s over. This is it. This is the final decision to be made,” Horne said. Horne decided not to file an appeal because the probability of the court’s reversing the decision would be “zero.” He said filing an appeal would be a waste of taxpayer money. The ruling Friday by U.S. District Judge John Sedwick bars state officials from enforcing a 1996 state law and a 2008 voter-approved constitutional amendment that outlawed gay marriage. Sedwick said in his ruling that because the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals had already ruled against gay marriage bans in Nevada and Idaho, he did not need to give a lengthy reason for his ruling and was bound by the appeals’ court decision. “A stay of this decision to allow defendants to appeal is not warranted. It is clear that an appeal to the 9th Circuit would not succeed. It is also clear … that the High Court will turn a deaf ear on any request for relief from the 9th Circuit’s decision,” Sedwick said.

Headline:   Powerful Hurricane Gonzalo approaching Bermuda

Hurricane Gonzalo pounded Bermuda with wind and heavy surf on Friday, bearing down on the tiny British territory as a powerful Category 3 storm that could raise coastal seas as much as 10 feet (3 meters). The storm was centered about 100 miles (165 kilometers) south-southwest of Bermuda Friday afternoon with top sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. It was moving to the north-northeast at 16 mph (26 kph) and was expected to pass near or over Bermuda Friday evening. A white haze covered the island as waves slammed into the shore and the wind uprooted banana trees. The Bermuda Weather Service said the eye of Gonzalo was expected to move over the island in the next few hours, bringing a lull in winds, but forecasters warned people not to go outside because the most dangerous winds were expected after nightfall. Hurricane-force winds were predicted to batter Bermuda for seven hours, and forecasters said a storm surge would cause significant flooding on an island about one-third the size of Washington, D.C.
