Headline:  US-Israel partnership proposal put on hold

After months of cooperation on a popular strategic partnership bill, politics has frozen progress on legislation that would strengthen ties between Israel and the United States.
The US-Israel Strategic Partnership Act, under the scalpel in Congress since March of last year, was taken off the Senate agenda after top Republican Sen. Bob Corker of Tennessee attached an amendment that would have triggered hearings on any deal reached between world powers and Iran over its nuclear program. High-level negotiations are under way in Vienna on that issue, where the US, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, China, and Germany are trying to forge a comprehensive agreement that will end concerns over military dimensions to the Islamic Republic’s nuclear progress. Members of Congress are skeptical Iran’s leaders are genuine negotiating partners.

Headline: Liberman: US shouldn’t call for probe of Nakba Day killings

Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman on Thursday criticized a call by the United States for Israel to conduct an investigation into the deaths of two Palestinian teenagers shot during clashes with the IDF last Thursday, saying the IDF would investigate not due to external pressure, but out of adherence to its own values. “We have no need for an American demand to investigate what happened,” Liberman said during a visit to Ariel University in the West Bank. “The IDF is the most ethical army in the world. “I regret that these demands don’t come out in other cases,” Liberman continued. “In Syria, close to 170,000 people have been killed, and I did not see any action by the international community to investigate the murders. Hamas assassinated two civilians in the Gaza Strip, without a lawyer and without a trial. I did not see any request from the international community. “We will investigate out of our responsibility to the ethical codes of the IDF. What’s more, the clip that was circulated suddenly wasn’t put out immediately — only a few days later — and this raises suspicions,” he said.

Headline:  Abbas: Palestinians not seeking to join more UN agencies for now

The Palestine Liberation Organization has no plans to request membership from any additional international organizations in the near future, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview with Walla news site on Wednesday. Israel is aware of the Palestinian decision, Walla reported. The decision is surprising given that the PA leadership has been saying since April that it plans to turn to various UN agencies in light of the failure of Israeli-Palestinian negotiations. The Palestinian Authority applied to join 15 UN institutions in early April, with the Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations saying the PA could also become a signatory to up to 550 international treaties or conventions. Abbas told Walla the Palestinians are still waiting to see what the next diplomatic developments will be. He also said he warned Israel and the United States two days before applying to join the institutions that it would go through with the request if Israel did not free prisoners in the fourth batch of the planned release.

Headline:  Hamas Leader: Unity Or Not, Resistance Will Continue

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas gave new insights into developments with the Fatah-Hamas unity pact, saying that he promised Justice Minister Tzipi Livni during their controversial meeting in London that the government would work within his own – not Hamas’s – guidelines. He stressed that he himself may not head the government, but that another Fatah official may, e.g. PA “prime minister” Rami Hamdallah. He also indicated that the government will be comprised entirely of “independent” Palestinian Arab politicians, and that it would be based on four international principles: recognizing Israel, recognizing the terms of international agreements, and the explicit rejection of violence and terrorism. The move is a surprising about-face for Abbas, who has insisted that Hamas “doesn’t need to recognize Israel” in the framework of a unity government.

Headline:  Gaza Terrorists Target IDF with Mortars, Bomb

Two attacks on IDF soldiers near the security fence of Gaza occurred on Wednesday. Three mortar shells were fired at IDF forces conducting activities to expose terror tunnels just over the fence in central Gaza. Likewise an explosive charge was detonated near an IDF routine patrol near the security fence in southern Gaza. No injuries among the soldiers were reported, although the blast caused light damage to engineering equipment. Walla! reports that the blast apparently damaged a bulldozer. IDF forces responded by opening fire at points on the other side of the fence where they suspected the presence of terrorists surveying the effects of the bomb. An IDF source noted “terror sources are manipulating the space adjacent to the fence to place explosives and to use terror against IDF forces and citizens of the state of Israel.”

Headline:  US assigns 13,000 servicemen to first ever combined US-Jordan-Israeli exercise. Hezbollah heads for Golan

Under cover of conjoined military exercises with Israel (Juniper Cobra) and Jordan (Eager Lion), the US has moved more than 6,000 Marines to Jordan and several thousand servicemen to Israel.. The Jordanian drill starts Sunday, May 25 and will last until June 8. The US-Israeli exercise began this week with the participation of another 6,000 combat personnel from the US European Command and 1,000 airmen to operate missile defense systems. Sailing opposite Israel’s Mediterranean shore are two US warships carrying Aegis Combat Systems. Due to arrive in the Jordanian Red Sea port of Aqaba over the coming weekend are large US landing craft, that will drop marines on land. Gulf units are also taking part in the combined exercise. This is the first time that the US has unified two large military exercises. The Jordanian and Israeli drills will be coordinated by US command centers.
The two war games were planned as military maneuvers plain an simple until Wednesday, May 21, when news came in of large Hizballah military forces heading toward southern Syria to help the Syrian army overcome the rebel forces fighting for more than a week to capture the Syrian Golan town of Quneitra opposite the Israeli and Jordanian borders. In the last few days, both Israel and Jordan have beefed up their Syrian border deployments and placed them in battle stations. Hizballah’s intervention in the Golan battle may well result in the war game being switched to combat operations for real.

Headline:  Killings Revive Fears in Egypt Before Election

Three riot police officers trying to break up a student protest against Egypt’s military-backed government were killed in a drive-by shooting in Cairo on Tuesday as early results from expatriate voters confirmed that the military’s former leader, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, was headed for a big victory in next week’s presidential election. The riot police were dispersing a protest by hundreds of Al-Azhar University students that began late Monday when someone in a passing vehicle opened fire, state media reported. Several soldiers were injured. The shooting revived fears of violence around the presidential election, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. During two weeks of campaigning, assailants have also attacked or set fire to at least three Sisi campaign offices, according to official media reports. In the 10 months since the ouster of President Mohamed Morsi, the leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, Islamist militants have attacked and killed several hundred soldiers and police officers, either for revenge or to try to start an insurgency.

Headline:  Russia calls UN vote on Syria ‘publicity stunt,’ vows to veto

Russia dubbed as a “publicity stunt” a planned UN Security Council vote on Thursday on a resolution to refer Syria’s civil war to the International Criminal Court, warning that the move would be detrimental to attempts to broker peace. Moscow has long been against referring the Syrian conflict to The Hague-based ICC for possible prosecution of war crimes and crimes against humanity. Russia’s UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin emphatically reinforced Moscow’s position on Wednesday. When asked if Russia planned to veto the French-drafted resolution, Churkin told reporters: “Yes we do.” “The fact that the resolution is going to a vote we regard as simply a publicity stunt, which will have a detrimental effect unfortunately on our joint efforts in trying to resolve politically the crisis in Syria,” Churkin said.

Headline:   Syria army presses bid to break prison siege

Syria’s army has launched a fierce assault on rebel fighters in a bid to break their year-long siege on Aleppo’s central prison, a monitor, state media and activists reported Wednesday. The rebels and their allies from the Al-Qaeda-affiliated Al-Nusra Front have been trying to overrun the jail, which remains in government control, to release political prisoners reportedly held in very poor conditions. “The army, the (pro-regime) National Defense Forces militia, Arab fighters and Lebanon’s Hezbollah are in fierce combat against jihadists from Al-Nusra Front and Islamist rebels in the Sheikh Najjar industrial area, one kilometer (0.6 miles) from Aleppo’s central prison,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Troops loyal to President Bashar al-Assad had broken through on the road leading to the prison, said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman, adding that ending the siege “would constitute a strategic victory for the regime.”

Headline:  Jihadists look to form extremist state along Syria-Iraq border

Jihadists have launched a fresh bid to take over the Syria-Iraq border area and set up a so-called Islamic state they can control, rebels, activists and a monitoring group say. “Their name is the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). Their goal is to link together the two areas (Syria, Iraq) to set up their state and then to continue spreading,” said activist and citizen journalist Abdel Salam Hussein. Speaking from Albu Kamal on the Iraq border, Hussein said ISIL, sometimes referred to as ISIS, seeks to crush the Nusra Front, al-Qaeda’s Syria affiliate, and control the eastern, energy-rich province of Deir Ezzor bordering Iraq. “ISIL are trying to end Al-Nusra Front’s power in the area, and if they do they will take over” the whole province, he said.ISIL’s long-time ambition of creating an area under its control stretching across Syria and Iraq was undermined by a massive January offensive against it by rival Islamist rebels. The campaign cornered ISIL fighters in Raqa province, its bastion in northern Syria.

Headline:  Some Russian troops at Ukraine border may be ‘packing up,’ U.S. source says

In east Ukraine, government officials have accused pro-Russian separatists of seizing election commission offices in a bid to derail Sunday’s presidential poll. The latest tension raises further doubts over whether voting will go ahead in Ukraine’s eastern regions where rebels remain in control. The self-appointed parliamentary speaker of the Donetsk People’s Republic, Denis Pushilin, said: “Of course there will be attempts but we are not planning to hold any vote. How can we hold an election of a neighbouring country in our territory?” Despite the rebels efforts, officials loyal to Kyiv in Donetsk say they are working hard to make sure the vote takes place. “We recently had threats and attacks coming from so-called representatives of the Donetsk People’s Republic. We were threatened by people with guns, they came in and took all of our paperwork. And now we are trying to put everything back together again,” said Donetsk election official Irina Kondratenko. On Tuesday, rallies were held in the east of the country and factory workers temporarily downed tools after Ukraine’s richest man Rinat Akhmetov called for a peaceful warning protest against the rebels. Elsewhere, in a sign of growing tension and division ahead of Sunday’s vote, unverified footage appeared to show armed men holding up the bus of Shakhtar Donetsk’s youth football team at gun point.

Headline:  IAEA says Iran agrees to address issues in nuclear bomb probe

Tehran has agreed to address by Aug. 25 some issues related to a long-stalled IAEA investigation into suspected Iranian atomic bomb research, the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency said on Wednesday. In a potentially important step forward in the IAEA’s efforts to advance its investigation, it said Iran would exchange information “with respect to the allegations related to the initiation of high explosives, including the conduct of large-scale high-explosives experimentation in Iran”. The issue was part of a landmark report issued by the IAEA in 2011 that included a trove of intelligence information pointing to past work in Iran that could be relevant for the development of nuclear weapons. Iran denies having worked on a nuclear weapons capability in any form.

Headline:  Clashes erupt in Libyan capital after air chief backs rogue general

The former general who is leading an armed uprising in Libya says that he will not negotiate with his rivals and will instead rely on force to achieve his objectives. “We see that confrontation is the solution,” Khalifa Hifter said from his headquarters in the eastern city of Benghazi. “I do not think talks will work with them.” On Friday, Mr Hifter launched an offensive in Benghazi against Islamist militias that have been widely blamed for a string of killings. As least 70 people were killed and dozens injured in the most intense fighting since the revolt that deposed the dictator Muammar Gaddafi three years ago. The assault was followed two days later by an attack on the national parliament by militias loyal to Mr Hifter. The fighting was a dramatic sign of the central government’s inability to assert control over the country, which has broken up into virtual fiefdoms ruled by militias since the ousting of Gaddafi. The stunning offensive of recent days led by Mr Hifter – a former anti-Gaddafi activist who spent years in exile in Virginia – has prompted militias to choose sides, in what could be a prelude to large-scale clashes.

If you believe that the U.S. economy is heading in the right direction, you really need to read this article. As we look toward the second half of 2014, there are economic red flags all over the place. Industrial production is down. Home sales are way down. Retail stores are closing at the fastest pace since the collapse of Lehman Brothers. U.S. household debt is up substantially, and in 20 percent of all U.S. families everyone is unemployed. In so many ways, what we are witnessing right now is so similar to what we experienced during the build up to the last great financial crisis. We are making so many of the very same mistakes that we made the last time, and yet our “leaders” seem completely oblivious to what is happening. But the warning signs are very clear. All you have to do is open your eyes and look at them. The following are 27 huge red flags for the U.S. economy…

Headline:  Dollar Decline: RussiaChina to Expand Payments in National Currencies…

Russia and China are planning to increase the volume of direct payments in mutual trade in their national currencies, according to a joint statement on a new stage of comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation signed during high-level talks in Shanghai on Tuesday. “The sides intend to take new steps to increase the level and expansion of spheres of Russian-Chinese practical cooperation, in particular to establish close cooperation in the financial sphere, including an increase in direct payments in the Russian and Chinese national currencies in trade, investments and loan services,” the statement said. The two countries are also set to deepen dialogue on macroeconomic policy issues, as well as boost growth in mutual investment, including in transportation infrastructure, the development of mineral deposits, and the construction of budget housing within Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin arrived in China on Tuesday for high-level talks with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping. A large package of documents, including bilateral, intergovernmental, inter-departmental and corporate agreements are expected to be signed during the two-day visit, aimed at cementing Russian-Chinese relations. The decision to switch to the national currencies, thus reducing dependence on the US dollar was first announced in 2010 by then-Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. The announcement was followed by a deal struck by the central banks of the two countries that allowed bilateral trade in the ruble and renminbi, as well as in freely convertible currency.

Headline:   Russia conducts test-launch of ballistic missile

Russia today carried out a successful test-launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile, news agencies reported citing the defence ministry, amid a standoff between Moscow and the West over Ukraine. Interfax and ITAR-TASS quoted the defence ministry as saying a successful test of the RS-12M Topol ICBM had been carried out from Russia’s Kapustin Yar rocket launch site near the Caspian Sea at 2238 IST (1708 GMT). The missile hit its target in the Sary Shagan ballistic missile test range that Russia leases in Kazakhstan, it said.
“The purpose of the launch was to test a prospective warhead of intercontinental ballistic missiles,” Interfax quoted defence ministry spokesman Igor Yegorov as saying, without providing further details. Russia reportedly carried out previous tests in December and March of the RS-12M Topol, a road-mobile missile first put into service in the 1980s and then repeatedly modified.

South Korea cautioned North Korea against conducting a nuclear test, warning the North that such a test would incur “a strong response from the international community.” Speaking at a regional security conference in Shanghai, Unification Minister Ryoo Kihl-jae asserted, “If North Korea goes ahead with another nuclear test, it will face a concerted, firm and strong response from the international community.” South Korea has offered economic assistance to its northern neighbor on the condition that it halt its nuclear program. North Korea has rejected calls for de-nuclearization, and asserts its rights both to economic and nuclear development. South Korean Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told reporters on May 8 that North Korea is prepared to conduct its fourth nuclear test. Satellite imagery shows increased activity at North Korea’s main test site in Punggye-ri, and the defense minister noted that the readiness level is such that “North Korea can conduct an atomic test whenever it makes a decision.”

Headline:  Pennsylvania gay marriage ban overturned by judge

Pennsylvania’s ban on gay marriage was overturned by a federal judge Tuesday in a decision that legalized same-sex unions throughout the Northeast and sent couples racing to pick up licenses. U.S. District Judge John E. Jones III called the plaintiffs — a widow, 11 couples and one couple’s teenage daughters — courageous for challenging the constitutionality of the ban passed by lawmakers in 1996. “We are a better people than what these laws represent, and it is time to discard them into the ash heap of history,” the judge wrote. The judge declined to put his ruling on hold for a possible appeal by Republican Gov. Tom Corbett, so it went into immediate effect. The governor, who opposes gay marriage, did not issue a statement or indicate whether he would appeal. However, his state party chairman complained that an “activist” judge had usurped the power of the Legislature.

Headline:     April 2014 Ties for Globe’s Warmest on Record

Last month ranked as the world’s hottest April on record, tying with April 2010, U.S. weather officials announced Tuesday (May 20). The average global temperature for April 2014 was 1.39 degrees Fahrenheit (0.77 degrees Celsius) warmer than the 20th century average for the month, which was 56.7 degrees F (13.7 degrees C), according to the latest monthly report from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). April 2014 and April 2010 also tied for seventh place in having the greatest departure from their monthly average (among all months) since such record keeping began in 1880, NOAA officials said. Despite an average of hot temperatures around the planet, some regions, including the continental United States, remained tepid in April. No U.S. state recorded average temperatures that ranked in their top 10 warmest or coolest last month. Overall, the continental United States experienced its 46th warmest April since record keeping began, NOAA officials said.

Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Luke 21:9:  wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions)   Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

Headline:  Nigeria violence: ‘Boko Haram’ kill 27 in village attacks

Suspected Nigerian Islamist militants killed 26 people in two attacks on remote northeastern villages this week, demonstrating their ability to target civilians hours after a bomb killed 118 people in the central city of Jos, police said on Wednesday. In one raid, militants opened fire on Alagarno village and razed several houses to the ground, killing 17 people overnight, a source at police headquarters told Reuters. The attack was barely 30 km (20 miles) from Chibok, from where Boko Haram Islamists abducted more than 200 schoolgirls last month. In the other, men on motorbikes attacked the nearby village of Shawa, killing nine people on Monday. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Boko Haram has either claimed or been blamed for scores of similar such attacks in the this part of Borno state, near the hilly border with Cameroon. Meanwhile, The Islamist group Boko Haram has been accused of killing at least 27 people in attacks on two villages in north-east Nigeria, close to where hundreds of schoolgirls were seized. Gunmen killed 10 people in the village of Shawa and a further 17 in Alagarno, police and witnesses said.

Headline:  Kenyan police clash with students at Nairobi demo

Kenyan police forces have clashed with students protesting an increase to tuition fees in the capital Nairobi. Tuesday’s demonstration turned violent after police fired tear gas at the students who reacted by hurling stones. “We have arrested over a hundred of them but some have been released,” Nairobi police official Paul Wanjama said. Police forces also stormed the University of Nairobi’s main campus, shooting tear gas and breaking down classroom doors. Nairobi police chief Benson Kibue defended the crackdown by its forces, saying, “In any demonstration, you must do it in such a way as not to interrupt or interfere with the activities of other Kenyans. When you cause an obstruction or instill fear among bystanders, then that ceases to be a peaceful demonstration.” Similar demos were held in various public universities throughout the country.

Headline:  Malian army flees Tuareg rebels in northern town

The UN Security Council called for an immediate end to violence in northern Mali after more than 30 people were killed in fighting between rebels and the army in a flashpoint town. Tuareg separatists clashed with Malian soldiers in Kidal during a visit by Prime Minister Moussa Mara, whose government is backed by French soldiers who have helped dislodge rebels and armed Islamic extremists from northern towns. The fighters of the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) took 32 civil servants hostage but released them on Monday. The battle left eight Malian soldiers and 28 rebels dead. “The members of the Security Council strongly condemned the violent clashes in Kidal on May 17 and 18,” the 15-member Council said in a statement. “The members of the Security Council insisted on the need for those responsible for these actions to be identified and held accountable. “The members of the Security Council called on all parties to act with restraint and refrain from any further violence that could threaten civilians.” They also called for “sincere” peace talks and “reiterated that only a credible and inclusive negotiation process can bring long-term peace and stability throughout the country.”

Headline:  Dozens dead in Yemen clashes

Clashes between Yemen’s army and Houthi rebels have left dozens of people dead in a rebel stronghold in the country’s northeast. Military sources told Al Jazeera that at least eight soldiers were killed in Tuesday’s fighting in Amran city. Local officials said as many as 30 rebels were also killed in the fighting, north of the capital Sanaa. Dozens of other combatants were reported wounded in the gunfight that erupted on the western outskirts of the city, medics at Amran hospital told the AFP news agency. A military source said clashes broke out after rebels attacked an army position in the area. The rebels complain that Yemen would be divided into rich and poor regions under a federalisation plan agreed in February following national talks that were part of a political transition. Tensions remain high in Amran where Houthis have been trying to enforce their presence through armed parades and protests against the military.

Bahraini Security forces have killed an anti-regime protester who had participated in a rally in the island of Sitra. The victim has been identified as Seyyed Mahmoud Seyyed Mohsen. Reports indicate that the killing took place during clashes with protesters who had gathered to remember Ali Faisal al-Akrawi, who was killed in a blast near his home on May 16. At the time of his death, Akrawi was reportedly in hiding following an absentia prison sentence of 10 years over his alleged role in anti-government protests. On May 19, Amnesty International issued a statement voicing concern over the lack of judiciary reform in Bahrain and severe crackdown on anti-regime protesters.

Headline: Thailand under martial law

Martial law appeared to be primarily playing out behind closed doors Wednesday in Thailand, with little outward change on the streets of Bangkok a day after the military invoked expanded powers. Here’s a summary events and a guide to understanding what is happening: Thailand’s army chief, Gen. Prayuth Chan-Ocha, assumed the role of mediator by summoning seven key political rivals for face-to-face talks Wednesday for the first time since Thailand’s political turmoil escalated six months ago. The meeting of bitter political enemies was unlikely to yield any immediate resolution, but the event itself was a stunning development. The high-profile figures invited to the meeting included anti-government protest leader Suthep Thaugsuban and his rival from the pro-government Red Shirt group, Jatuporn Prompan, and the acting prime minister, who did not attend but sent four representatives. Also summoned were leaders of the ruling Pheu Thai Party, the opposition Democrat Party, the Election Commission and representatives from the Senate. In declaring martial law Tuesday, the army said it needed to restore order after long-running political protests that have been targeted by violence. In the latest attack last week, grenades fired at an anti-government protest site in Bangkok left three people dead and more than 20 injured. The anti-government protest leader billed this week as the “final battle” in ousting the government. Meanwhile, thousands of Red Shirt government supporters were gathering on Bangkok’s outskirts.
