Headline:  White House: Our ‘Values’ Built Iron Dome

The tit for tat between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and the White House on building in Givat Hamatos continued Monday. In response to criticism of the US in an interview program Sunday, the White House on Monday slammed Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, saying that his criticism of American values was out of place. The criticism of America for its concern over Israel’s construction in Jerusalem was “odd,” said White House press secretary Josh Earnest. “When it comes to American values, it’s American values that led to this country’s unwavering support of Israel,” Earnest said. “It’s American values that have led us to fund an Iron Dome system” which protected Israeli cities from attacks by Hamas terrorists during Operation Protective Edge. On Sunday, Netanyahu gave Israel’s side of the Jerusalem building controversy in an interview on the CBS news program Face the Nation. Netanyahu said that the criticism of Israel’s plans to build in Givat Hamatos, a Jerusalem neighborhood, was “baffling. It’s against the American values. And it doesn’t bode well for peace,” Netanyahu said. “The idea that we’d have this ethnic purification as a condition for peace, I think it’s anti-peace.

Headline:     Calls for a Second Non-Muslim Gate to Temple Mount

A document published by Galei Tzahal (IDF Radio) on Monday morning reveals that the Tourism Ministry is considering opening the Cotton Merchant’s Gate to the Temple Mount for Jewish visitors and tourists. As the status quo stands, the Mughrabi Gate is the only point of entrance for Jews in visiting the holiest site in Judaism, and that point of access has repeatedly been targeted by Arab rioters for attacks as a means to force the closure of the site to Jews. The large number of Jews and tourists trying to visit the holy site has led to long lines at the lone non-Muslim gate to the Temple Mount, which is located by the Kotel (Western Wall). Due to the backlog, the Tourism Ministry is apparently considering measures such as opening an additional gate. Yehuda Glick, head of the LIBA Movement for Freedom of Movement on the Temple Mount, told Galei Tzahal that the status quo must be changed urgently. “There are 11 entrances to the Temple Mount, ten of them open to Muslims, but only one open to tens of thousands of tourists and Jews who want to enter the Temple Mount,” said Glick. “Each day the numbers waiting on line increase…this gate doesn’t meet the needs.” The document was drafted in January, but the Tourism Ministry says it was not advanced mainly due to opposition by security sources to the move, given that it would require a heavy increase in security and likely spark further rioting and violence by Arab visitors to the Temple Mount. That violence has already been reaching a peak in the “silent intifada,” with Arab mobs two weeks ago on Wednesday ahead of the Jewish New Year (Rosh Hashana) launching rocks and fireworks at police as soon as the Mughrabi Gate was opened.

Headline:    Hamas forms new plainclothes security force modeled after Iran’s Basij

Hamas has been forming a new security unit in the Gaza Strip. Palestinian sources said Hamas has been recruiting a militia force that would maintain regime protection. The sources said the militia, trained in light weapons, was meant to free Hamas’ military wing from engaging with civilians. “Hamas is following the Iranian model in which plainclothes forces are used to quell dissent,” a source said. The sources said the new Hamas force was dubbed the Popular Army. They said the so-called army was meant to work with Izzedin Kassam Brigades, which directed the Hamas war against Israel in July and August 2014. The force, meant to contain thousands of members, has been recruited by Hamas in wake of the 50-day war. The sources said Hamas officers were organizing militia units in every major city and town in the Gaza Strip. The sources said the Popular Army was meant to protect Hamas’ interests should the Palestinian Authority take over the Gaza Strip. They said the army was modeled after Iran’s Basij, a force of students sworn to defend the Teheran regime.

Headline:     Palestinian unity Cabinet to meet in Gaza

The Palestinian unity government will hold its first Cabinet meeting in Gaza this week, a key step towards taking charge of reconstruction efforts in the war-battered territory, a senior official said on Monday. The Cabinet will convene on Thursday, said Deputy Prime Minister Mohammad Mustafa, three days before an international pledging conference where the Palestinian government will seek $4 billion (Dh14.6 billion) in aid for Gaza, hit hard after Israel’s 50-day assault this summer. Donor countries view the unity government of independent experts, led by Western-backed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, as key to any reconstruction plans. Hamas, which is shunned as a terrorist group by the international community, has governed Gaza for the past seven years. The purpose of the Gaza meeting is to “see the situation on the ground and to send a message to the donors’ conference that the government is ready to start reconstruction soon,” Mustafa said.

Headline:     UNIFIL probes Israeli shooting of Lebanese soldier

Headline:     IDF fires on alleged infiltrators from Lebanon

The U.N. peacekeeping force in Lebanon has launched an investigation into the shooting of a Lebanese soldier, saying the incident was a violation of Resolution 1701 that brought the 2006 Israeli- Lebanon conflict to an end. In a statement, the U.N. Interim Force in Lebanon said the shooting incident that took place in the Shebaa Farms area of south Lebanon at around 2 p.m. Sunday left a Lebanese soldier wounded. It said both the Israeli and Lebanese sides were coordinating fully with UNIFIL to prevent similar incidents. Israeli soldiers fired at a Lebanese Army post in the Shebaa Farms area near the border Sunday, wounding one soldier, the Army said in a statement. A security source said Zakaria Hamza al-Masri was shot in the hand, prompting troops to return fire. In a statement posted to Twitter, the Israeli military claimed it shot at two people it discovered “infiltrating Israeli territory from Lebanon.” “The suspects escaped north, returning to Lebanon,” it added. The Army is coordinating with UNIFIL to investigate the incident, the statement said, after taking defensive measures.

Headline:   Al-Kataeb Calls for a ‘Major Operation’ to Close The Eastern Border, Protect It

At least 16 insurgents from Syria’s Al-Qaida wing Nusra Front were killed in clashes with Shi’ite group Hezbollah in eastern Lebanon on Sunday after launching a major offensive, a source close to Hezbollah said. Hundreds of the Sunni Muslim insurgents attacked at least 10 Hezbollah bases along a mountainous range close to the Syrian border, and killed two Hezbollah fighters, in the latest spillover of violence from the civil war next door. “There are at least 16 dead from Nusra Front,” the source said. “Fighters from Hezbollah in the Bekaa region are joining the areas where the clashes are,” he added, referring to the region stretching across eastern Lebanon. Hezbollah had issued a call on Sunday to its fighters to defend the area, the source close to Hezbollah and other security officials said. They say Nusra Front has so far failed to control any of the positions it attacked. Earlier officials put the death toll at eight and said it was expected to rise. They said fighters from Islamic State, another insurgent group based in Syria, were also involved in the clashes but the source close to Hezbollah said only Nusra Front appeared to have taken part. The attacks took place in a large area of territory stretching from south of the town of Baalbek up to areas close to the border town of Arsal. Meanwhile, the Al-Kataeb party called for the implementation of a “major operation” on Monday to close the border between Lebanon and Syria after the violent clashes between Hizbullah and al-Nusra Front.

Headline: Sinai Jihadist Group Kills 4 More ‘Collaborators’

Headline:  Ansar and ISIL, step up attacks in Sinai, near Egypt-Libyan border

The Egyptian jihadist group Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis on Sunday decapitated three people and shot a fourth on accusations of “collaborating” with Israel’s Mossad spy agency and the Egyptian army, the Al-Ahram news website reported, citing a video published on online jihadist forums. The group published a previous decapitation video of four others in August who they said had provided information that helped an Israeli drone strike kill three of the group’s members in July. The Aswat Masriya news website, founded by Reuters, reported that the video showed “confessions” of three persons and the shooting of another along with the destruction of his house. The video also featured searches conducted by the group investigating passing cars and looking for “agents of the apostate army,” Aswat Masriya said. Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis has killed hundreds of Egyptian soldiers and police over the last year and beheaded several people in recent weeks, saying they were spies for Israeli intelligence. It has carried out several similar beheadings of alleged “collaborators”, a method used by the “Islamic State” (IS or ISIS) group which has taken over large parts of Iraq and Syria. On Thursday, the Egyptian Army eliminated a major terror leader in Ansar Bayt Al-Maqdis.

More than 2,000 Syrian Kurds including women and children are being evacuated from border town of Kobani after Islamic State militants who have besieged the town for nearly three weeks have advanced towards the city center, a translator for the leading Kurdish political group in Syria told Reuters on Monday. “We can hear the sound of clashes in the street,” Parwer Ali Mohamed, a translator for the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) said over the phone, en route to Turkey. Al-Qaida offshoot Islamic State is trying to seize the predominantly Kurdish border town of Kobani and has ramped up its offensive in recent days despite being targeted by U.S.-led coalition led air strikes aimed at halting its progress. A black flag belonging to Islamic State was visible from across the Turkish border atop a four-storey building close to the scene of some of the most intense clashes in recent days. Local sources inside Kobani confirmed the group had planted its flag but said that Kurdish forces had repelled their advances so far. “ISIL have only planted a flag on one building on the eastern side of town,” said Ismail Eskin, a journalist in the town. “That is not inside the city, it’s on the eastern side. They are not inside the city. Intense clashes are continuing.”

Syria Headline:    SYRIA- Russian intelligence center captured

Opposition forces on Monday seized control of new sites in the governorate of Daraa, south of Syria, as part of a plan to open a way to break the siege on western Ghouta areas, on the outskirts of Damascus. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, based in London, heavy clashes are raging between the Syrian troops and allied fighters on one hand and the Islamic Brigade and the Qaeda-linked Al-Nusra Front on the other in the vicinity of the Jadya village in Daraa. The opposition fighters controlled the two posts of Al-A’laf and Al-Ruba’i near the town of Zamrin, which they had already seized. At least five opposition fighters were killed. The regime’s troops, meanwhile, controlled Al-Dakhakniya neighborhood on the capital’s outskirts. A military source told the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) that the regime forces grabbed the Al-Dakhakniya in Damascus countryside. In the meantime, the regime’s fighter jets dropped barrel bombs on the towns of Ankhel and Salmin, both in Daraa, but no casualties have been reported. In the northern governorate of Aleppo, heavy clashes have been taking place since Monday dawn between the opposition Islamist fighters and the regime’s forces supported by allies. The Observatory said an explosion had been heard near the town of Haresta in the Damascus countryside today, coinciding with raids by the regime’s fighter jets on areas in the vicinity of the premises of the Air Force Intelligence in the area. On October 5, 2014 the rebels of the FSA captured a joint Russian-Syrian centre of radio and electronic intelligence (the so-called Center-C) located on Mountain Tal al-Hara, near Daraa, in southern Syria, near the Syrian-Israeli demarcation line”, says the Center for Analysis of Strategies and Technologies.

Iraq Headline:  Town falls to Islamic State in Iraq’s Anbar province

Islamic State fighters stormed a town in Iraq’s western Anbar province on Saturday, its latest conquest in the desert region where it has chalked up a string of victories, a military official and people fleeing the scene said. Islamic State seized the town of Kubaisa two days after the fall of the nearby town of Hit as the group sought to consolidate control in towns west of Anbar’s capital Ramadi. The fall of Kubaisa jeopardizes the strategic Ain al-Asad military base, which allows Iraqi forces to send troops and supplies to defend the Haditha dam further west where a small number of Sunni tribes and government forces are fending off Islamic State forces. Ain al-Asad lies beyond both Hit and Kubaisa. At least two civilians were killed and six others wounded in Kubaisa, said an official at the hospital in Hit.

Iraq Headline:  ISIS in Iraq Recaptures Sections of Dhuluiya Town

ISIS fighters recaptured parts of the Iraqi town of Dhuluiya Sunday, pushing back security forces who had only recently won control, a defense ministry source told NBC News. The swift counterattack enabled the militants to retake northern and western sections of the town, which is about 50 miles south of Tikrit. Dhuluiya was only liberated from ISIS for a short time, although it was unclear for exactly how long. Iraq’s defense ministry said their forces had helped Sunni Jubouri tribe members and Shia militia groups push the extremists out on Friday. A defense ministry source told NBC News it took place on Saturday. As ISIS fighters forced their way back into Dhuluiya, at least two tribal fighters were killed, seven policemen wounded and four police vehicles destroyed, Reuters reported. On Saturday, ISIS fighters also seized the town of Kubaisa and attacked the Shi-ite town of Balad, Reuters said.

Iraq Headline: Beyond The Islamic State: Iraq’s Sunni Insurgency

The Islamic State of Iraq and al Sham (ISIS) is not the only violent group opposed to the government of Iraq. Groups ranging from Salafist-jihadist to Sunni nationalist have also been mobilized against Baghdad since at least 2013. They remain a threat to the government even if ISIS is removed, especially if the core concerns of Iraqi Sunnis remain unaddressed by the Iraqi government. The primary grievances of most Iraqi Sunnis include the integration of Shi‘a militias into the Iraqi Security Forces (ISF), attacks by the ISF in Sunni civilian areas, and political exclusion in Baghdad.  Some of these groups, particularly the General Military Council of Iraqi Revolutionaries (GMCIR), have cooperated with ISIS in its campaign to expel the ISF from parts of Iraq. Nevertheless, most of them do not share ISIS’s long-term objectives for Iraq. Each group has come into direct confrontation with ISIS in 2014. Some of these groups may turn and fight ISIS, but the Iraqi government will not find them an an acceptable partner because they oppose the Shi’a government in Baghdad. In fact, where ISIS is degraded by military action, these groups may seek to fill the vacuum and continue to challenge the ISF for control of Iraq’s Sunni heartland.  The success of a ground war against ISIS in Iraq depends upon the Sunni population. This population, mostly behind the ISIS control line, is more proximate to the influence of ISIS and Sunni insurgent groups than to the Iraqi state or the U.S.-led counter-ISIS coalition. A strategy to destroy ISIS requires that these competing influences be outmatched to such a degree that the Sunni population once more decides to side with the Iraqi government to fight ISIS on behalf of the state. A military campaign to destroy ISIS that does not treat this condition will accelerate Iraq’s descent into a sectarian civil war.

Kurdish Headline: Kurds clash with Turkish security forces on Syria border

Headline: Biden comment shakes US-Arab alliance against ISIS

Turkish Kurds and refugees from fighting in Syria have clashed with Turkish security forces on the border between the two countries. Troops used tear gas and water cannon to disperse protesters angry at the situation in Syria, where IS militants are closing in on the town of Kobane. Meanwhile unconfirmed reports say at least 35 militants were killed in US-led air strikes over northern Syria. They come amid a Turkish-US row over alleged support for Syrian militants. On Friday US Vice-President Joe Biden criticised Turkey and US allies in the Arab world for supporting Sunni militant groups such as Islamic State, prompting a sharp response from Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. “If Mr Biden used such language, that would make him a man of the past for me,” he told a news conference in Istanbul. “No-one can accuse Turkey of having supported any terrorist organisation in Syria, including IS.” Oct. 4, 2014

Headline: Report: Islamic State is hatching plan to gain Iranian nuclear secrets

The British newspaper The Sunday Times reported on Sunday morning that Islamic State is calling on its members to brace for war with Iran in order to take over its nuclear secrets. The newspaper cited a document believed to have been written by top Islamic State member Abdullah Ahmed al-Meshedani, a member of the group’s highly secretive six-man war cabinet.
According to the Times‘ report, the so-called manifesto was uncovered when Iraqi forces raided a home of a senior official of the jihadist group. The document is allegedly being looked into by western security personnel, who have so far deemed it authentic, according to the newspaper. The jihadist organization plans to pay off Russia, the document states, exchanging its control of Anbar province’s vast gas fields for information on Iran’s nuclear program. The commander behind the manifesto also wants Russia to denounce its support for Iran and Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Times story is not the first report of the Islamic State’s desire to obtain non-conventional weapons.

Headline: Five killed in suicide bombing in Chechen capital

Headline: Province of Chechnya. Video refutes minions’ version of ‘preventing terrorist attack’ in capital

A suicide bomber has blown himself up in the Chechen capital Grozny, also killing five police officers and wounding at least 12 other people. The attack took place outside a hall where a concert marking Grozny’s City Day was about to take place. An interior ministry statement said police were searching a “suspicious” young man when he detonated a device. Grozny was ravaged by two wars between Russia and Chechen separatists but has been relatively calm in recent years. The Russian statement said that police officers on duty at the event “noticed a suspicious young man near metal detectors set up at the concert hall”. “When the police decided to search him and establish his identity, the man blew himself up,” it said. The bomber was identified as 19-year-old Opti Mudarov, a resident of Grozny. The ministry said he had disappeared two months ago and had had no contact with his family since then. There has been no information about any civilian casualties. This was a high-profile and symbolic target. This year, Grozny City Day celebrations coincide with the birthday of Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov. He recently asserted that extremist Islamic insurgents – who carried out major bomb attacks in Russia in the run-up to the Winter Olympics – were no longer a threat in Chechnya, and no longer recruiting.

Headline:  Explosion at nuclear complex in Iran kills two workers

Headline:   Iran and U.N. nuclear watchdog to meet on Tuesday: IRNA

Two workers are dead after a fire and explosion at a military explosives facility that’s part of Iran’s Parchin nuclear complex, reports say. The fire occurred in an “explosive materials production unit” Sunday, the BBC reported Monday, citing the semi-official Iranian Students News Agency (ISNA). A pro-opposition website reported a large blast near the Parchin military site, southeast of Iran’s capital Tehran, but that has not yet been confirmed. Parchin has been linked to Iran’s controversial nuclear program. Iran has denied the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) access to the complex since 2005. Pro-reform  website Sahamnews said the explosion was so intense, it shattered windows of buildings as far as 9 miles away. “Unfortunately, due to the incident, two workers of this production unit lost their lives,” ISNA reported, quoting Iran’s defense industries organization. There were no further details.

Headline: 14 Libyans killed in clashes over the weekend in Benghazi

Headline:  ISIS Gains Ground – in Libya

Violence continued to rock Benghazi on Saturday, with 14 soldiers killed and 50 wounded in two days of fighting. The troops, members of renegade general Khalifa Haftar’s Operation Dignity campaign, were killed in clashes with Islamic State supporters Ansar al-Shariah and the Islamist coalition Benghazi Revolutionaries’ Shura Council (BRSC), who have been fighting for control of the city for months. Mohamed al-Hejazi, a spokesman for Haftar, said the Islamists’ offensive on the Benina airport outside Benghazi had been stopped with the help of air power. “They tried taking the airport, but we won’t allow this,” he said. Islamist groups have already taken over a number of army bases in Benghazi and there have been reports of sporadic violence across the city. Meanwhile, The Ansar al-Sharia terror group, affiliated with ISIS, has declared authority during the last several days over the coastal city of Darna, Libya. Darna, while seemingly any other city in northern Africa, is located strategically between Benghazi and the Egyptian border – just 289 km (179 miles) and 333 km (206 miles), respectively.

Headline:   Op-Ed: ISIS Will Try for Tunisia Next

For the last two years, a group of Jihadists in the border areas between Tunisia and Libya are sporadically destroying Tunisian army vehicles and killing a good many of their occupants. This group calls itself – charmingly – “The Uqba ben Nafi Brigade”. Its Jihadist agenda has been known from the first, as has its ability to recruit fighters, equip itself with varied weapons and sow fear and trembling in its ever-widening surroundings. The Brigade is seen as part of the widespread and familiar “Al Qaeda of the Islamic Magreb” – Al Qaeda’s North African branch. Except that recently the group’s affiliation has been called into question, because information has begun filtering down claiming that it is now  swearing allegiance to Caliph Abu Bakr el Baghdadi of Islamic State. This possibility is important because of the existing split beween Al Qaeda and its leader Ayman al-Zawahiri on the one side and Islamic state and its leader El Baghdadi on the other.

Headline:   Algeria army ambushes, arrests group on Niger border

Algeria’s army on Monday ambushed and arrested a group trying to cross its border with Niger as the military increases border controls, fearing militants spilling over from neighbouring Libya and Mali. The ministry of defense issued a statement but gave few details on the ambush, saying the group of “criminals” of Sudanese and Chadian nationality was travelling in jeeps and motorbikes in an area known for smuggling, gun running and militant activity. Algeria has been heightening patrols and surveillance along its vast southern desert borders. “The army succeeded in ambushing in the area of Tiririne near the borders with Niger… a group of criminals of 20 people including 12 Sudanese and eight Chadians,” the ministry statement said. The army killed four militants and injured five more in the same region a few days earlier, a security source told Reuters.

Officials in the British Defence Department have confirmed that two British jihadists were released in a prisoner exchange between Turkey and the Islamic State group, the BBC reported Monday. According to the BBC report, the officials named the two British jihadists that were released as a part of a group of 180 Islamic State militants released by Turkey in exchange for 46 Turkish consular workers and their families kidnapped by the Islamic State in Mosul in June. The British newspaper The Times reported, based on documents it has obtained, that among the jihadists released were three Frenchmen, two Macedonians, two Swedes, a Swiss national, and a Belgian. According to the report the jihadists were either held in Turkish hospitals and prisons, or were held by moderate Syrian rebels. Headline:Boko Haram beheads 7 people in Nigeria: Sources

Takfiri Boko Haram militants have beheaded seven people in northeastern Nigeria, according to local residents and an official. A resident named Musa Abor said on Monday that when locals woke, they discovered “seven people had been brutally killed,” and added that the militants “slit their throats just the way people slaughter goats.” Abor and a Borno state official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the bodies were decapitated. The group, whose name means “Western education is forbidden,” says its goal is to overthrow the Nigerian government. It has claimed responsibility for many deadly shooting attacks and bomb blasts in various parts of Nigeria since the beginning of its operations in 2009. Over 10,000 people have so far been killed in the attacks. The militants are thought to be in control of more than two dozen towns and villages in the northeast.

Headline: Police fire tear gas at protesters in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Police forces in the Indian-controlled Kashmir have fired tear gas at angry protesters objecting to the Indian government’s inadequate handling of the aftermath of the recent flooding. On Monday, police used tear gas to disperse dozens of stone-throwing protesters as anti-India protests broke out after Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) prayers. The protesters accused New Delhi of failing to provide adequate relief to tens of thousands of displaced flood victims. The floodwaters have mostly receded but thousands remain in relief camps as winter is approaching. Among the protesters are many who are reviving decades-old resentment and calling for independence in the region. Flooding killed 281 people and destroyed at least 100,000 homes in the India-controlled Kashmir in early September.

Headline: Hong Kong Protesters Fear More Violence by China’s ‘Triad’ Gangs

Hong Kong’s protesting students were bloodied on Friday by attacks by thugs thought to be from criminal gangs known as “triads.” Protesters have accused the HK police of ignoring or even supporting the triad attacks on protesters, charges that the police vehemently deny. Some protesters are suggesting that the Beijing government is paying triad gangs to attack the protesters. Triads are sometimes referred to as “the Chinese Mafia.” They’re families of organized crime gangs involved in armed robbery, racketeering, smuggling, narcotics trafficking, prostitution, gambling and even contract murder. Their roots go back 1000 years to Buddhist (White Lotus) secret societies that originally were political. But over the centuries they morphed into organized crime families. They were given the name “Triad” by the British because of a triangular symbol that they use. They are mainly centered in China, Hong Kong and Macao, but they’ve spread to other countries as well, including the United States. There are Triad members featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto.
Protesters are responding to threats by the Hong Kong government by promising to allow government buildings, schools and businesses to open on Monday, while allowing peaceful protests to continue.

French Prime Minister Manuel Valls has warned that Britain will “lose a lot” if it were to turn its back on the European Union. “France wants Britain to stay in the European Union,” Valls said in a speech in London on Monday after a meeting with his British counterpart, David Cameron, and British and French executives. He added that joint action is needed to reform the 28-member bloc and make it “more intelligible to bring it closer to the people.” “There is a choice that we can and should make together: reform Europe to put growth, competitiveness and jobs back at the heart of its priorities,” the French premier said. Valls encouraged British businesses to invest in France but admitted that his country’s economic growth had been suffering a “long breakdown.” Euroscepticism in Britain has been on the rise over the past years.

Scientists have used Ebola disease spread patterns and airline traffic data to predict a 75 percent chance the virus could be imported to France by October 24, and a 50 percent chance it could hit Britain by that date. Those numbers are based on air traffic remaining at full capacity. Assuming an 80 percent reduction in travel to reflect that many airlines are halting flights to affected regions, France’s risk is still 25 percent, and Britain’s is 15 percent. “It’s really a lottery,” said Derek Gatherer of Britain’s Lancaster University, an expert in viruses who has been tracking the epidemic – the worst Ebola outbreak in history. The deadly epidemic has killed more than 3,400 people since it began in West Africa in March and has now started to spread faster, infecting almost 7,200 people so far. Nigeria, Senegal and now the United States – where the first case was diagnosed on Tuesday in a man who flew in from Liberia – have all seen people carrying the Ebola haemorrhagic fever virus, apparently unwittingly, arrive on their shores.

Headline: Preschool Enterovirus Victim Died in His Sleep

The New Jersey preschooler who died of the respiratory illness enterovirus 68 went to sleep and never woke up, health officials say. The death of 4-year-old Eli Waller is the first to be blamed on the virus that has swept the country, but health officials say he went to bed with none of its symptoms, which include cold-like symptoms but in some cases can involve wheezing and difficulty breathing. “I think Eli’s case is the exception to the other cases around the country,” said Jeffrey Plunkett, the Hamilton, New Jersey, health officer. “He had no signs of any illness that night, and his passing was sudden and shocking.” Eli, of Hamilton, New Jersey, was the youngest of three triplets, born “smaller and lighter than his sisters,” but he was never one to let that stand in his way, his father Andy Waller said in a letter released Sunday evening. His siblings are “perfectly healthy,” Plunkett said, but one of Eli’s classmates was being tested for possible infection this morning.

Headline: South China province sees almost 1,500 new dengue fever cases

The number of people infected with dengue fever is rising alarmingly in South China with 1,431 new cases reported in Guangdong Province, Xinhua news agency said on Monday. A total of 21,527 people have been diagnosed with dengue fever in 20 out of 21 prefecture-level cities in Guangdong so far, the agency quoted local health authorities as saying. One new fatality case was reported by the provincial health and family planning commission on Sunday, bringing the death toll in the province to six, Xinhua said. Dengue is a mosquito-borne, potentially fatal disease that affects, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), about 100 million people in tropical and subtropical regions every year, causing fever combined with muscle and joint aches. The outbreak of dengue this year is believed to be the worst in 20 years, Xinhua said, adding that health authorities attributed the outbreak to high temperatures and wet weather in Guangdong, where the mosquito population was five times the normal level.

Headline: Supreme Court paves way for gay marriage in several states, leaves issue unresolved nationally

The Supreme Court on Monday turned away appeals from five states looking to prohibit gay marriage, effectively legalizing same-sex marriage in those states and likely others — but also leaving the issue unresolved nationally. The justices rejected appeals from Indiana, Oklahoma, Utah, Virginia and Wisconsin. The court’s order immediately ends delays on gay marriage in those states. Couples in six other states — Colorado, Kansas, North Carolina, South Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming — also should be able to get married in short order. Those states would be bound by the same appellate rulings that were put on hold pending the Supreme Court’s review. That would make same-sex marriage legal in 30 states and the District of Columbia. In Utah, Gov. Gary Herbert said he was “surprised” and “disappointed” by Monday’s development. But the Republican governor said that “while I continue to believe that the states do have the right to define marriage and create laws regarding marriage, ultimately we are a nation of laws, and we here in Utah will uphold the law.” With no other state cases currently pending before the court, the decision to reject the appeals means the justices — for now — will not be considering the question of same-sex marriage nationwide.

This is Pastor Fiaz in Pakistan.  We just received an email from him that we would like to share.  We ask that you join us in prayer for his safety and that of all our brethren in Pakistan:

Today here in Pakistan a Muslim festival. They celebrate this in remembrance of Ismeil ( Ibraham son ) sacrifice. I shared some Muslim this sacrifice was not ismeil but Isaac Ibraham and Sara son. But God provide lamb. And now our all sacrifices has been completed in Jesus Christ. We not need to do any sacrifice. Just believe in Jesus and His death on Cross. This is difficult for Muslim to listen. But this is truth. Please pray for me. May God give me wisdom and encouragement when i talk any Muslim about Jesus.

Your brother in Christ,
