Headline: Dozens wounded in Temple Mount riot
Dozens of Palestinian protesters and an Israeli policeman were wounded Wednesday morning on the Temple Mount after the site was opened to Jewish visitors. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP that Palestinians threw “stones and firecrackers” at police when they opened the walled compound’s gates. Police responded with stun grenades, Rosenfeld said, and closed the complex to the Jewish visitors after a small number had toured the site. An AFP correspondent at the scene said dozens of Palestinians were wounded by rubber-coated bullets and stun grenade canisters, and were staying inside the Al-Aqsa mosque out of fear they would be arrested when leaving. Riots on the Temple Mount are not uncommon, and often accompany political tension or visits by Israeli right-wing activists. On Sunday, riot police were called in to quell a violent protest at the Temple Mount’s Mughrabi Gate as the site opened to visitors in the morning. One policeman was lightly injured and law enforcement officers entered the al-Aqsa mosque compound and used stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the rioters. Five Jewish Israelis were arrested Monday after allegedly attempting to sacrifice a goat at the Temple Mount in honor of the Passover holiday.

Jordan urged the UN Security Council on Wednesday to end Israeli “escalation” at the Temple Mount after it was opened to Jewish visitors, according to AFP. “Legal, humanitarian and ethical duties of the UN Security Council and the international community require that they stop Israeli escalation and violations committed by Jewish radicals at Al-Aqsa,” Information Minister Mohammad Momani told the state-run Petra news agency. “Such actions as well as Israel’s insistence on supporting radical groups provoke Muslims around the world, create more instability in the region and violate international laws.”

Dov Kalmanovitz, the Deputy Mayor of Jerusalem, demanded that the Israeli Police to close the Temple Mount to Arab visitors on Wednesday, following continued rioting at Judaism’s holiest site. “Tomorrow there will be Birkat Kohanim (the Priestly Blessing Ceremony – ed.), the Chief Rabbis will visit the Western Wall and thousands will flood the Jewish quarter,” Kalmanovitz noted to Arutz Sheva, adding that many foreign tourists had visited to celebrate the Passover holiday. “It is inconceivable that the Israeli Police prevents Jews, who want to ascend the Temple Mount, from entering, and allows Arabs – who riot – to continue to respect the mosques there and throw stones,” he added. Kalmanovitz then called on police “to maintain security” at the Mount – “either by allowing Jews to ascend to the Mount or by closing it completely.”

A meeting between Israeli and Palestinian peace negotiators scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed after the killing of an Israeli in a shooting attack in the occupied West Bank. A spokesman for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said the session had been rescheduled for Thursday at the request of the United States. Washington is struggling to extend the talks, on the verge of collapse, beyond an April 29 deadline for a peace deal.An Israeli official confirmed the meeting had been delayed but declined to say who asked for the postponement or when teams would reconvene to try to breathe new life into the U.S.-driven peace process.

Jordanian warplanes hit and destroyed several vehicles trying to cross the border from Syria, a government spokesman said on Wednesday, underlining Amman’s concern about incursions from areas controlled by Syrian rebels. “There was an attempt to infiltrate across the border from Syria by a number of vehicles,” said spokesman Mohammad al-Momani, also a cabinet minister, told Reuters. A Jordanian security source said the targets were Syrian rebels in civilian cars mounted with machine guns. It was unclear whether rebels who have dominated swathes of territory along Syria’s southern border with Jordan might have been seeking refuge inside Jordan from fighting with President Bashar Assad’s forces that has raged in the region.

Headline: Vials of deadly SARS virus ‘go missing’ in France
More than 2,300 tubes containing samples of the potentially deadly SARS virus have gone “missing” from a high-security laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. The research body insists there is no cause for alarm as the samples have “no infectious potential”, but it has filed a complaint against “persons unknown” in an attempt to resolve the mysterious disappearance. Severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, is a contagious respiratory illness that first appeared in China in November 2002, when it killed 775 people and infected around 8,000.

Satanic Temple launches campaign to ‘protect’ children and permit them to pray to Satan
The Satanic Temple states that they are fighting for the rights of public school students to learn in a cruelty-free classroom. In a press release, the NYC organization declares May 15 as “Protect Children Day,” and describes a goal of ending physical and mental abuse in public schools. After students register on Satanic Temple’s ProtectChildrenProject.com, “the Temple will then notify their respective school boards that their deeply held beliefs oppose physical and psychological abuses, including the use of corporal punishment, physical restraints, and isolation rooms as forms of punishment,” a press release states. The Protect Children Project’s website encourages children to submit their name, email address, and the name of their school in order to receive help from the Temple. The organization maintains that submission does not make one a Temple member, and is open to all denominations. “One of the fundamental tenets of The Satanic Temple is personal sovereignty and the inviolability of one’s body and mind,” Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves said. “Hitting a child or placing them in solitary confinement goes entirely against our beliefs.” According to an Education Week article, there are no federal laws regarding corporal punishment, and the practice is legal in 19 states. The article and The Satanic Temple’s press release both cite a U.S. Department of Education statistic stating that in one year, over 200,000 students were physically punished in school. ProtectChildrenProject.com provides fact sheets on physical and psychological abuse in schools, an FAQ for students, and a Satanic activity book. “We want children to know that they are permitted to pray to Satan in school and that they can even share their religious beliefs with others in accordance with certain guidelines,” Greaves said.
