10-22-13 Psalm 116-1-12

“And in despair I bowed my head: “There is no peace on earth,” I said, “For hate is strong and mocks the song Of peace on earth, good will to men.”

Then peeled the bells more loud and deep:“God is not dead, nor doth He sleep; The wrong shall fail, the right prevail,With peace on earth, good will to men.

Till, ringing, singing on its way,The world revolved from night to day A voice, a chime, a chant sublime, Of peace on earth, good will to men.

Headline:   Abbas Presents ‘Plan of Attack’ for Palestinian State

Headline:  Abbas: Palestinians will never recognize Israel as Jewish state

More details have been released regarding Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s speech to the Arab League on Saturday revealing that Abbas has concocted a comprehensive plan to flatten Israel politically and bypass the need for bilateral negotiations to establish a Palestinian state. Abbas’s plan includes approaching the UN Security Council with a draft resolution to establish the state in Judea and Samaria, over 1949 Armistice lines – as he has threatened to do before. However, the details of the plan include a specific “plan of attack” against Israel, as follows:

  • To turn to the UN Security Council with the draft resolution for a Palestinian state, with its capital in Jerusalem.
  • To add the “State of Palestine” to international bodies and organizations, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), and file charges against Israel. Abbas noted here that Israel has preceded him in this regard, a reference to litigation filed against him by rights group Shurat Hadin over war crimes he and the Palestinian Authority perpetuated during Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, by virtue of the PA’s unity pact with Hamas.
  •  Preparation of an international meeting in Geneva to officially declare a Palestinian State on 1949 Armistice Line borders.
  • Calls on countries who have not yet recognized the PA-Hamas government as the country “Palestine” to do so. This aspect of the plan follows the recent declaration by three separate Western countries (Sweden, the UK, and Spain) whose parliaments have recognized “Palestine,” and ahead of a controversial vote on the issue by a fourth (France).

Abbas is indeed moving forward with plans to turn to the Security Council with a resolution setting a deadline for Israel to “end the occupation”, a unilateral move that is in violation of the Oslo Accords. The move has been accompanied by public threats, with Abbas having recently threatened to cut ties with Israel if his latest unilateral move at the UN fails.

Headline:  Israel’s government on verge of collapse as coalition partners turn on Benjamin Netanyahu

Israel’s government was on the verge of collapse Sunday night as a split over a controversial new law designating the country as a Jewish state deepened into an all-out assault by cabinet rivals on Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister. Mr. Netanyahu signalled that he was ready to call an early general election to stifle the rebellion, led by ministers from centrist coalition partners to his right-wing Likud Party. He lashed out angrily after his finance minister, Yair Lapid, the leader of the Yesh Atid party, publicly accused him of playing “petty politics” while ignoring weighty issues such as the budget and Israel’s foreign relations, in the latest of a series of rancorous exchanges. Recently, hardly a day passes without us running into diktats or threats of resignation, or ultimatums and such, as ministers attack the government and its prime minister,” Mr. Netanyahu told Sunday’s weekly cabinet meeting. “I hope that we will be able to return to proper conduct. This is what the public expects of us because only thus is it possible to run the country, and if not, we will draw conclusions.” His comments were the clearest sign yet that the country was heading toward an early election, less than two years after Mr. Netanyahu formed a mostly right-wing coalition in which Mr. Lapid headed the second-biggest party.

Headline:  Tensions Between Hamas and Fatah Rise As Dispute Over Unity Government Continues

A leading official of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah movement has challenged a claim by Hamas that the unity government formed between the two factions in April has expired, claiming that there was never any agreement that the unity government would last only six months. Faisal Abu Shahla said that the unity government was assigned to carry out a number of tasks, including holding elections, “within at least six months,” but that it was never agreed that the government term would end if it did not complete those tasks within that time frame. “If the Hamas movement has retracted the reconciliation agreement and the termination of rivalry, that is a different case,” Abu Shahla said, according to the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said that the six-month mandate of the national consensus government had ended. Any decision on whether the government should be disbanded or continued or be reshuffled must be made only through national dialogue and consensus, Abu Zuhri said.

Headline:  Syrian FM: Israel ‘Secretly’ Behind Al-Nusra

Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem on Sunday accused Israel of “aiding the rebels in Syria.” His proof: “Every time the Syrian army advances” and positions itself to retake territory from the rebels who are fighting against the government of Bashar al-Assad, “there is an Israeli strike, either land-based with tanks, or from the air. I say that this proves that Israel is a main partner of Jabhat al-Nusra, the Al-Nusra Front, which is fighting against our forces on our southern border,” he said. As further evidence, al-Muallem pointed out a comment by Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon. “We are not the first to point out this partnership,” al-Muallem said. “The Israelis themselves say it. Moshe Ya’alon said that Al-Nusra is a ‘mild’ group, even though it is on the list of international terror organizations. Ya’alon even proudly pointed out that some members of the group are getting treatment in Israeli hospitals,” al-Muallem added. It’s not clear to what al-Muallem was referring. In a recent interview, Ya’alon took a tough stance aganst Al-Nusra. “We enjoy a relatively calm situation on the border of the Golan Heights. They understand that if they violate our sovereignty, we immediately respond,” he said, in a discussion of the different terror groups operating in Syria and prospects of a breakup of the country. “Israel is seeking to set up a ‘buffer zone’ between Israel and Syria, and Israel and Jordan, through the employment of Al-Nusra,” al-Muallem added. “This is what they did in South Lebanon. They are encouraging terror elements to enter Syria via Jordan.” Israel had no comment, but a diplomatic source said that al-Muallem “had been rumored to have been ill recently, but we didn’t realize that it was a mental health issue.”

Headline: Clashes break out in West Bank town after stabbing attack

Residents of Beit Fajjar south of Bethlehem clashed with Israeli police Monday, in the wake of a stabbing attack on an Israeli by a 22-year-old woman from the West Bank town. Police attempted to disperse the rioters with tear gas. Security forces surrounded the home of Amal Taqatqa before the clashes broke out, shortly after she attacked an Israeli earlier in the day at the nearby Gush Etzion junction south of Jerusalem. Her father was arrested, according to Palestinian news agency Ma’an. Taqatqa was shot by soldiers at the scene and was brought to Hadassah-Ein Kerem hospital in serious condition. The Palestinian Ma’an news site said she was affiliated with the Fatah movement. The Israeli victim was identified as Yehoshua Lorch.

Headline: Jordanians Protest Against ‘Dangerous’ Jewish State Law

Hundreds of Jordanians on Friday joined a rally organized by the Muslim Brotherhood to denounce Israeli plans to enshrine in law the country’s status as the national Jewish homeland. An estimated 1,500 protesters set off from the Husseini mosque in downtown Amman holding up signs saying “Al-Aqsa is in danger”, according to AFP. “There is a greater danger today, and that is the Jewish state draft law,” Hamzeh Mansur, the former head of the Brotherhood’s Islamic Action Front party, told the protesters. “Where is Jordan’s custodianship over Jerusalem and where is the promised Palestinian state?” he asked. The protest comes amid tensions between Israel and Jordan in recent weeks, mostly around the Temple Mount, over which the Jordanian Waqf has control which it uses to restrict Jewish prayer and build illegal structures on the compound. The Jewish State law, which was the subject of Friday’s protest, seeks to enshrine in law Israel’s being a Jewish state.

Headline:    Egypt Designates ISIS and its Affiliates as Terrorist Groups

Islamic State-affiliated militants in Egypt have claimed responsibility for the death of an American oil worker, believed to be the first western victim of a deadly campaign that has blighted the country for over a year. “We claim responsibility for the killing of American oil expert William Henderson in the Western Desert,” the Ansar Bayt el Maqdis (ABM) militant group wrote on its Twitter account late on Sunday night. It did not say when or how it had killed him. The message was accompanied by photographs of Mr Henderson’s passport and identification cards, one carrying the logo of Apache, an international oil and gas exploration and production company. Henderson, 58, is believed to have been killed on August 6 in Egypt’s Western Desert, a vast expanse of land running up to the western border with Libya. Egyptian security officials later confirmed the incident had taken place, saying one of Apache’s American employees had been shot while driving between the headquarters of Apache’s sister company, located in the Qarun oasis, and Karama oil field, south west of Cairo.

Syria Headline:  25% of Kobani Remains Under Control of Islamic State

Fighting has intensified in the besieged Syrian border town of Kobane, where Kurdish forces have been holding Islamic State at bay since September. IS militants launched at least four suicide attacks, with reports saying at least 25 people were killed. The first of the attacks was near the Turkish border crossing. It is thought to be the first fighting in that area. The first suicide vehicle bomb targeted a Kurdish position close to the Turkish border at dawn on Saturday. Kurdish sources said the bomber had crossed from Turkey, but Turkish officials denied this as “lies”. Clashes followed at the site of the attack and to the south-west of the town. The UK-based activist group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said there were three more suicide bombings – one an individual with a suicide vest and the other two vehicle bombs. As the clashes intensified, there were reports that IS had brought up tanks to join the fighting. Meanwhile two US-led air strikes were carried out against IS positions in the east of Kobane. In all, 25 people were killed in the clashes, most of them IS fighters, reports said. IS has captured parts of the town and dozens of villages in the area around it in an offensive lasting more than two months.

Syria Headline:  Syria Claims Terror Groups Used Chlorine as Weapon

Syria’s vice foreign minister denied Monday that his government ever used chemical weapons or chlorine during the country’s brutal civil war and warned that terror groups are using such weapons. Faysal Mekdad was speaking at a meeting of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons as the group comes close to fully eliminating Damascus’ deadly stockpile of nerve agents and poison gas ? helping international efforts to prevent terrorists using such weapons. Mekdad said that terror groups “have used chlorine gas in several of the regions of Syria and Iraq.” It’s not the first time such claims have been made. In October, Iraqi officials said militants from the Islamic State group used chlorine gas during fighting with security forces and Shiite militiamen north of Baghdad. The statements in Iraq came two days after Kurdish officials and doctors said they believed IS militants had released some kind of toxic gas in an eastern district of Kobani. President Bashar Assad’s government also is widely believed to have unleashed chemical weapons during the civil war, despite its repeated denials.

Syria Headline:  Syrian warplanes kill 19 in Deraa province

At least 19 people were killed, including seven women and two children, when Syrian government warplanes struck the town of Jassim in the southern province of Deraa on Sunday, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. Dozens of others were wounded and the death toll was expected to rise because a number were in critical condition, the Observatory said. The Observatory added that the regime air force carried out 11 raids in the town al-Sheikh Meskin in Deraa Province, where regime forces, supported by Hezbollah militias battled rebel fighters. Meanwhile, a man reportedly died in the town of Nawa under torture inside a regime jail, the monitoring group said. In Rif Dimashq Province, regime warplanes reportedly dropped 14 barrel bombs with no information on casualties. The situation escalated in Daraa after the FSA fighters and allied Islamic battalions advanced in areas near the capital Damascus.

Syria Headline:  Islamic State seizes villages near Syria’s Hasakah

On Sunday morning, the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) took control of the village of Rafraf  (10 km west of the city of Hasakah), in northeastern Syria, following two weeks of clashes with the Syrian regime forces. Speaking to ARA News, one of the displaced people from Rafraf said that about 500 IS militants entered the village after forcing pro-regime military forces to withdraw from the area. “The group (IS) installed several checkpoints in the vicinity of the village after controlling its entrances, and took schools and mosques as strongholds,” said the source, under the condition of anonymity for security reasons. This coincided with violent clashes between IS militants and the pro-regime forces in other areas of the western countryside of Hasakah. Meanwhile, civil rights activist Hozan Saeed, based in Hasakah, stated to ARA News that the pro-regime military helicopters dropped two barrel bombs on the vicinity of the IS-held al-Siddiq junction on Sunday. “No casualties were reported.” Saeed also mentioned the outbreak of clashes between pro-regime forces and IS militants in the southern countryside of Hasakah, while several artillery shells the village of Oum Makhroom (20 km south of Hasakah).

At least 20 ISIL Takfiri terrorists have been killed and dozens injured when Iraqi border guards thwarted an attempt by the militants to infiltrate into the western province of Anbar. The Takfiris were trying to enter the town of al-Waleed, situated on the Syrian border and located approximately 550 kilometers (341 miles) west of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, on Monday. The Iraqi guards confronted and killed twenty of the infiltrators, while scores of others sustained injuries. Sixteen Iraqi border guards were also killed during the incident. Separately, Iraqi security forces killed four terrorists, among them a sniper, during an operation in the Sijariya neighborhood in eastern Ramadi, located about 110 kilometers (68 miles) west of Baghdad.

Iraq Headline:   First footage surfaces: Iranian jet seen attacking ISIS targets in Iraq

The Iranian Air Force is bombing Islamic State (ISIS) targets inside Iraqi territory. It is an intensification of Iran’s military involvement on the side of the Shia regime of its neighbor and most likely also a sign of its alleged coordination with the U.S. military which is leading the international coalition fighting ISIS. The first footage of an Iranian aircraft bombing inside Iraq was broadcast by Al Jazeera a few days ago in a report on a joint operation by the Kurdish Peshmerga forces, Iraq’s army and Shia militias to recapture two Kurdish towns in northeastern Iraq, near the Iranian border. The report mentions “Iraqi jet-fighters,” but the plane seen bombing ISIS positions is a F-4 Phantom, which is not in Iraqi service. In recent months Iran has increased its military assistance to the Iraqi army which is on the brink of collapsing in the face of ISIS advance and has also established and equipped Shia militias. In addition to the military advice and arms supplies, there have been multiple reports of active participation of members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) in the fighting and unconfirmed reports of the deployment of Iranian aircraft to airfields in Iraq, but the Al Jazeera footage is the first documented of Iranian air attacks on Iraqi territory.

The Iraqi army has retaken from Islamist insurgents a sprawling complex where aging remnants of late President Saddam Hussein’s chemical weapons program are stored in bunkers, the country’s deputy foreign minister said on Monday. Islamic State militants, who had seized the area during a lightning offensive last June, were not able to penetrate the fortified bunkers, Mohammad Jawad Al-Doraky told delegates at a chemical weapons conference in The Hague. He said Iraqi government forces had now managed to oust Islamic State from the compound, where two sealed bunkers contain stockpiles of old chemicals, rockets and equipment. Al-Doraky said a facility set up under a plan to destroy the chemicals, built with tens of millions of dollars in U.S. funding, had been looted. The area north of Baghdad had also been mined, postponing the demolition plan that had been set to be carried out this year. “The Iraqi army, during the past period, has recovered the Muthanna site and the roads leading to it,” he told delegates at the annual conference of the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). “Military engineers are now working on removing mines and explosive devices from around the site and the region,” he said. “The terrorists were unable to penetrate the fortified bunkers.”

Headline:  Pope says it is wrong to equate Islam with violence

Pope Francis said on Sunday that equating Islam with violence was wrong and called on Muslim leaders to issue a global condemnation of terrorism to help dispel the stereotype. Francis, the leader of 1.2 billion Roman Catholics, told reporters aboard his plane returning from a visit to Turkey that he understood why Muslims were offended by many in the West who automatically equated their religion with terrorism. The Argentine pope, who has been trying to foster cooperation with moderate Islam in order to work for peace and protect Christians in the Middle East, said it was wrong for anyone to react to terrorism by being “enraged” against Islam. “You just can’t say that, just as you can’t say that all Christians are fundamentalists. We have our share of them (fundamentalists). All religions have these little groups,” he said. “They (Muslims) say: ‘No, we are not this, the Koran is a book of peace, it is a prophetic book of peace’.” Francis said he had made the suggestion of a global condemnation of terrorism by Islamic leaders in talks on Friday with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan. “I told the president that it would be beautiful if all Islamic leaders, whether they are political, religious or academic leaders, would speak out clearly and condemn this because this would help the majority of Muslim people,” he said. Francis several times condemned Islamic State’s insurgents during his three-day trip. On the plane, he said some Christians had been forced to abandon everything: “They are driving us out of the Middle East.”

Russia is launching a new national defense facility, which is meant to monitor threats to national security in peacetime, but would take control of the entire country in case of war. The new top-security, fortified facility in Moscow includes several large war rooms, a brand new supercomputer in the heart of a state-of-the-art data processing center, underground facilities, secret transport routes for emergency evacuation and a helicopter pad, which was deployed for the first time on Nov. 24 on the Moscow River. The Defense Ministry won’t disclose the price tag for the site, but it is estimated at the equivalent of several billion dollars. The new National Defense Control Center (NDCC) is a major upgrade on what was previously called the Central Command of the General Staff, a unit tasked with round-the-clock monitoring of military threats against Russia, particularly ballistic missile launches, and deployment of strategic nuclear weapons. It was roughly a counterpart to the US National Military Command Center, the Pentagon’s principal command and control site.

Headline:  Khamenei tells Iran armed forces to build up ‘irrespective’ of diplomacy

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Sunday the armed forces should increase their combat capability regardless of political considerations, in an apparent allusion to continuing nuclear talks with the West aimed at easing tension in the Middle East. “Given our vast maritime borders and the enemy’s huge investments in this area, our armed forces should continuously improve their (combat) readiness, irrespective of political calculations,” Khamenei told a gathering of senior navy officials during a ceremony to mark the “Navy Week” in Iran. Khamenei, who commands all branches of the armed forces in addition to other key centers of power in the Islamic republic, did not mention any countries by name but he normally uses “enemy” to refer mainly to the United States and Britain — both of which have intervened in Iran over the past century. “Peacetime offers great opportunities for our armed forces to … build up on preemptive capacities,” said Khamenei, with state television playing excerpts of his speech.

Headline:  Sudan embraces genocide, terrorism — and Iran

Headline:  Russian Foreign Minister to Visit Sudan

It is not often that we’re able to listen in on the comments of senior officials in a government that stands internationally accused of genocide. But that’s exactly what we’ve been given through the leaked minutes of a security meeting held Aug. 31 by top military and security officials in Sudan. Prominent in the document are plans for further genocidal tactics in parts of the country. In rebellious South Kordofan, according to the minutes, the government’s strategy is to “starve” (a translation of the Arabic) the civilian population by ensuring that it can’t harvest this year’s crops and thus support rebels near the border with South Sudan. This is counterinsurgency at its cheapest. First Vice President Bakri Hassan Saleh put the matter tersely: “Support the mechanism intended to disperse or empty the IDP [internally displaced persons] camps.” While the “mechanism” is left unspecified, increasingly brutal assaults on camps for internally displaced persons suggest that it will be cruel and bloody, forcing people who’ve had their homes and farms seized to flee into lawless lands beyond reach of humanitarian assistance. The minutes, along with other important documents, were leaked by someone either within the ruling National Congress Party or with close ties to the regime. They were delivered by intermediaries to a primary Arabic news Web site and to me, presumably because of my research and advocacy on behalf of the marginalized peoples of Sudan. The Sudanese regime split badly following the bloody suppression of popular uprisings in September 2013. Hardliners now wield all real power, and these were the men whose thoughts were captured in the Aug. 31 minutes. The leak was clearly meant to undermine the credibility of what has become a vicious junta. Though little noticed in the West, the revelation instantly attracted considerable interest in the Arab world, and the evidence that the minutes are authentic is substantial. The highly authoritative Africa Confidential has judged them so, as has former prime minister Sadiq al-Mahdi, who still enjoys extraordinary contacts within the government. Notably, senior regime officials have not denied outright the document’s authenticity.

Headline: About 400 killed in past six weeks of fighting in Libya’s Benghazi

About 400 people have been killed in six weeks of heavy fighting between Libyan pro-government forces and Islamist groups in Libya’s second-largest city Benghazi, medical staff said on Saturday. Backed by forces led by a former general, the newly formed government army launched in mid-October an offensive against Islamists in Benghazi, expelling them from the airport area and from several camps the army had lost during the summer. In the past three weeks the fighting has centered around Benghazi’s commercial port where pro-government forces say Islamists are holed up. The port has had to close, disrupting food supplies in the eastern city. “The death toll has risen to 400,” a source at a Benghazi hospital said, declining to be identified for security reasons. Medics at other hospitals in the city confirmed the estimated death toll. The fighting in Benghazi is part of wider turmoil in the North African country. Two governments, each with their own parliament and army chief of staff are vying for legitimacy, three years after the ouster of Muammar Gaddafi. In August, Prime Minister Abdullah al-Thinni and his cabinet were forced to leave Tripoli for the east of Libya when group called Libya Dawn seized the capital. The new rulers set up their own government and parliament, but these have not been recognized by the United Nations and world powers. The situation has been complicated by the Benghazi fighting where former general Khalifa Haftar has merged his force with the army under a mandate from the elected parliament, which is allied to Thinni and also operates out of the east. Haftar’s spokesman Mohamed El Hejazi said his forces had surrounded the Islamists in the port area. “All types of weapons including aircraft supporting the infantry are being used to deal with them,” he said. Western powers and Libya’s neighbors fear the conflict is dragging the major oil producer towards civil war.

Headline:   Nearly 40 per cent of Germans support Russia’s annexation of Crimea, according to an opinion poll

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Crimea has found supporters in an unlikely country: A November 23 opinion poll in Germany found that nearly 40 per cent of the country’s population accept the move. The surprising result has stirred debate in Germany, prompting some to ask: Is Germany Russia’s closest ally in the West? The opinion poll was conducted by Infratest dimap, a well-regarded German institute that interviewed 1000 Germans above the age of 14. It also determined that 43 per cent of Germans do not feel immediately threatened by Russia’s foreign policy. Nevertheless, an Infratest dimap survey conducted in August found that 80 per cent of Germans blamed Putin for the escalating conflict in eastern Ukraine. So the more recent poll could indicate that Germans want to stop Putin from pursuing his strategy in eastern Ukraine but believe the West also needs to make a concession – by officially accepting the Russian annexation of Crimea. Germans have grown increasingly critical of the West. After trust in the United States suffered during the Iraq war, the National Security Agency spying scandal provoked new anger and provided arguments to those who wanted to position Germany as a negotiator between Russia and the West, rather than as a strong US ally.

Headline:   ISIS Is Now Launching Attacks From Inside Turkey

Turkey’s main Kurdish party on Saturday accused the government of turning a blind eye to—if not outright supporting—ISIS militants within its borders after suicide bombers attacked the town of Kobani along its southern border with Syria. The Turkish government vehemently denies the claims. ISIS “used to attack the town from three sides,” said the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Nawaf Khalil, a spokesman for Syria’s Kurdish Democratic Union Party, in a statement. “Today, they are attacking from four sides,” noting the addition of Turkey. Mustafa Bali, a Kobani-based activist, told the Associated Press that ISIS fighters have taken positions in the grain silos on the Turkish side of the border and to coordinate and launch attacks along the border near the crossing point. “It is now clear that Turkey is openly cooperating with Daesh,” said Bali

Headline:    Erdogan hosts Putin to tighten Turkey-Russia alliance

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday holds talks in Ankara with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin to tighten links which have survived potentially grave disputes over the Syria and Ukraine crises. The talks are expected to focus on energy cooperation — with Ankara seeking not only a reduction in gas prices from Russia but also greater import volumes ahead of the winter — as well key diplomatic issues. It will be the first time the pair have met face-to-face since Erdogan moved from the post of prime minister to president in August, the same job change that Putin himself made in 2012.

It’s been one week since the streets of Ferguson boiled over after protesters learned the officer who shot teenager Michael Brown won’t face criminal charges. Since then, much has changed. And much hasn’t. The looting and arson that marred last week’s protests are over. But the demonstrations continue in Missouri and across the country. Activists are calling for students to walk out of school and employees to walk off the job nationwide at 1 p.m. ET Monday to protest police violence. And over the Thanksgiving weekend, Ferguson-area organizers called for a Black Friday shopping boycott, forcing the St. Louis Galleria Mall to shut down temporarily on the busiest shopping day of the year. St. Louis officials urged Galleria retailers to close security gates after several hundred protesters entered the mall and disrupted shopping. Protesters chanted “Hands up, don’t shop,” while others lay on the floor in a “die-in.”

Headline:  10-plus killed in northeast Nigeria market blast

Two bombers have attacked a crowded market in the northeastern Nigerian city of Maiduguri, killing more than 10 people. Borno State police spokesman, Gideon Jibrin, said the assailants “detonated an explosive in Monday market in two different locations killing more than 10, and injuring many.” Goni Abba, a witness at the scene, said: “I counted 10 dead bodies and over 20 others have injuries.” Two female bombers had also struck the market last Tuesday, killing more than 45. Also on Monday, blasts and gunfire broke out in the northeastern city of Damaturu. According to residents, the raid took place at about 4:45 a.m. (0345 GMT) when Takfiri Boko Haram militants targeted a mobile police base on the outskirts of the city, the capital of Yobe State. Yobe, along with two other states, was placed under a state of emergency in May 2013 due to the Takfiri-fueled violence.

Explosions struck the town of Wajir in northern Kenya near the border with Somalia on Monday evening and one person was killed in a gun attack that coincided with the blasts, emergency workers and police said. A police officer said the assault was probably carried out by Somali Islamist militants. The incident occurred in an area in Wajir called Ngamia, where there are police posts and a social club used by government workers. The Interior Ministry said on Twitter that three armed men launched the attack. The Kenya Red Cross said about a dozen people were taken to hospital after the blasts and gunfire. “A patient shot in the attack died,” said health worker Abdi Kullow at the hospital. A police officer also confirmed one person had died of gunshot wounds. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The Somali Islamist group al Shabaab has said in the past that it would attack Kenya in retaliation for Nairobi’s decision to send Kenyan troops to Somalia with an African Union peacekeeping force. The African forces have been battling al Shabaab militants and driving them out of strongholds there.

Hong Kong police have clashed with pro-democracy activists overnight, briefly shutting down government offices on Monday. Protesters fought police armed with pepper spray, batons and water hoses on Lung Wo Road in the Admiralty district. On Monday, an injunction was granted to clear an area just west of the main Admiralty protest site. That sparked fears of more violence after what was already some of the worst unrest in two months of protests. The protesters want the people of Hong Kong to be allowed to choose their leaders in the 2017 elections without intervention from Beijing. The Chinese government has said it will allow universal suffrage, but candidates for the post of chief executive will be screened first. After the clashes, Chief Executive CY Leung warned activists not to come back to the protest site later on Monday. “From this day on, the police will take resolute action when carrying out their duties. I call on the students who are thinking of returning to the occupation area tonight not to do so. “Don’t mistake the police tolerance as weakness.” The unrest flared late on Sunday, after student protest leaders called on supporters to converge on the offices of Mr Leung on Lung Wo Road.

At least 14 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were killed and about a dozen wounded in an encounter with Maoists near Chintagufa in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district on Monday, the biggest loss of lives in anti-Maoist operations after the NDA government assumed charge in May. Security forces were deep inside the forests about 450 km from state capital Raipur, when Maoist gunmen attacked them, using villagers as shields, officials said. The CRPF launched a special operation on November 16 to corner the First Battalion of the CPI (Maoist)’s Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee who have a stronghold in the area. “Fourteen jawans have died in the ambush,” additional director general (anti-Maoist operation) Rajinder Kumar Vij told HT. The dead included two officers. The death toll is likely to go up with security forces unable to carry out rescue operations in the firing that went on until late evening. “We have to wait till Tuesday morning to take out the injured personnel and the bodies from the remote forested terrain,” Vij added.

Headline:  Total US Debt Rises Over $18 Trillion; Up 70% Under Barack Obama

Last week, total US debt was a meager $17,963,753,617,957.26. Two days later, as updated today, on Black Friday, total outstanding US public debt just hit a new historic level which probably would be better associated with a red color: as of the last work day of November, total US public debt just surpassed $18 trillion for the first time, or $18,005,549,328,561.45 to be precise, of which debt held by the public rose to $12,922,681,725,432.94, an increase of $32 billion in one day. It also means that total US debt to nominal GDP as of Sept 30, which was $17.555 trillion, is now 103%. Keep in mind this GDP number was artificially increased by about half a trillion dollars a year ago thanks to the “benefit” of R&D and intangibles. Without said definitional change, debt/GDP would now be about 106%. It also means that total US debt has increased by 70% under Obama, from $10.625 trillion on January 21, 2009 to $18.005 trillion most recently.

Headline:  Emerging Stocks Decline Most in 17 Months on Oil as Ruble Slides

The Russian national currency has suffered its worst one-day fall since a financial crisis in 1998. Russia’s ruble recorded its worst daily fall since that time on Monday, as crude oil prices dropped even further. Approximately half of Russia’s federal budget revenues are generated by oil and natural gas exports. On Monday, Brent crude hit $67.53 per barrel, the lowest since October 2009. At one point in the day, the ruble slumped by over 8 percent landing at over 53 rubles per each US dollar. At the end of the main trading session in Moscow, it picked itself up and stopped at 52 rubles against the dollar and 56 per euro. From the beginning of the year, the ruble has suffered around 40 percent devaluation against its US counterpart. Global crude oil started to drop after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decided to maintain crude output in an oversupplied market.

Headline:  Oil prices drop to their lowest level in five years

Headline: Gas Heading Below $2.00 a Gallon in Southern U.S.

Oil prices fell to their lowest in five years on Monday, hit by slowing factory activity in China and Europe and hammering emerging market stocks and commodity-linked currencies. Plunging prices for oil and other commodities raised fears of deflation, especially in the euro zone and Japan, and the prospect of looser monetary policy pushed the yen to a seven-year low against the dollar in Asian trade. In a further blow to Japan, the Moody’s ratings firm cut its credit rating to A1 with a stable outlook from A3, briefly pushing the yen even lower. Russia’s rouble dropped more than 4 percent against the dollar while Malaysia’s ringgit, also oil-dependent, was on course for its biggest two-day fall since the 1997-8 Asian financial crisis. Oil prices have been falling for five months as abundant supply outstrips demand. OPEC last week declined to curb output to lift prices. Brent crude fell 2.4 percent on Monday alone, to $68.54 a barrel.

***If you’re like me you’ve been driving around, stopping at gas stations and praising God for the drop in fuel prices, wondering why on earth everyone is SO upset about the falling price of oil.

Here is what Zero Hedge has to say: “The price of crude oil is falling towards $40 a barrel, and while this benefits American consumers, especially those in the south, it indicates a global recession because production alone is unlikely to cause such a drastic decline in oil prices. “Oil’s decline is proving to be the worst since the collapse of the financial system in 2008 and threatening to have the same global impact of falling prices three decades ago that led to the Mexican debt crisis and the end of the Soviet Union,” Bloomberg reported. The prices are declining partially due to the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries’ decision not to cut production to try and force the U.S. shale industry out of business. But can production alone account entirely for the 37% decline in oil prices since July? It would appear a lack of demand combined with no cuts in production are driving oil’s free fall, and imploding demand is indicative of a global recession.”

If you don’t understand that either (which I didn’t) don’t feel bad- we aren’t a country, nor are most of us billionaires with millions of dollars sunk into oil investment. While us ‘little people’ are happy with this- because it gives us more money in our pocket to spend on other things beside gas, those who run the ‘big operations’ are panicking.   At first, I though perhaps Saudi (OPEC head) had an ‘idea’ to NOT curb output to stop ISIS from making money on their black market oil- which could still be true.   Let’s look at what Reagan called Trickle Down Economics (for simple people LOL). You work for a major company that has billions of dollars. The head owner has decided to put his money into oil for investment. Instead of getting a return on $103 a barrel, he is now getting a return on $65 a barrel. Where is the other $38 going? He’s lost it. And when you take $38 times millions, it’s quite a loss. Chances are he isn’t going to cut his lifestyle to make up for it- he won’t sell his house or car, but he MAY sell a company, which provides tax write-offs. Now you’re out of a job. Then what happens? And try imagining this on the scale of a country like Russia or Saudi Arabia. Default can loom.

The head of the UN Ebola response mission in West Africa has told the BBC there is still a “huge risk” the deadly disease could spread to other parts of the world. Tony Banbury declined to say if targets he had set in the fight against Ebola, to be achieved by Monday, had been met. The targets were for the proportion of people being treated and for the safe burial of highly infectious bodies. The UN boss was speaking in Freetown, one of the worst-affected areas. In October, Mr Banbury told the UN Security Council that by 1 December, “70% of all those infected by the disease must be under treatment and 70% of the victims safely buried if the outbreak is to be successfully arrested”. Mr Banbury said the 70% targets were being met in “the vast majority” of areas in the three worst-affected countries – Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia. “But in some areas”, he said, “including here in Sierra Leone – especially in the capital Freetown and in the town of Port Loko – we are falling short. And it is in those areas where we really need to focus our assets and our capabilities”. The American UN boss added that, even so, “there is a huge risk to the world that Ebola will spread. It may spread around this sub-region, or someone could get on a plane to Asia, Latin America, North America or Europe… that is why it is so important to get down to zero cases as quickly as possible”.

Atheist activists are taking their campaigns to the Bible Belt this Christmas with a provocative billboard campaign that is expected to stir controversy in America’s religious heartlands. The giant advertising hoardings in the Tennessee cities of Memphis, Nashville, St. Louis and Fort Smith, Arkansas show a mischievous-looking young girl writing her letter to Father Christmas: “Dear Santa, All I want for Christmas is to skip church! I’m too old for fairy tales,” she writes. The advertising campaign by the American Atheists group will run until Christmas Eve and is the first time the group has aimed its anti-God adverts directly at residential religious areas, having previously targeted urban audiences in big venues such as Times Square in New York. “Today’s adults have no obligation to pretend to believe the lies their parents believed. It’s OK to admit that your parents were wrong about God, and it’s definitely OK to tell your children the truth,” said David Silverman, the group’s president, as he launched the campaign. In a sign of the hostility the adverts are expected to generate, American Atheists said that it had failed secure a single billboard site in Jackson, Mississippi after leasing companies collectively refused to offer space, fearing a community backlash.

Headline:  2014 Boils Toward Warmest Year Ever with Three More Records Broken

Even if it’s freezing in your personal universe, Earth as a whole just broke three “warmest” records and is likely to see 2014 go down as the warmest since record keeping began in 1880, scientists reported Thursday. Driven by record warm oceans, combined sea and land temperatures in October were the warmest on record, according to data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. On top of that, January-October was the warmest first 10 calendar months, while November 2013 to October 2014 was the warmest 12-month block. Data released by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration showed where the records fell, in large part due to record warm oceans:

  • Warmest October: The combined average temperature over global land and ocean surfaces was the highest on record for an October at 58.4 degrees F, or 1.3 degrees above the 20th century average and topping the previous record (2003) by 0.02 degrees.
  • Warmest first 10 calendar months: The surface temperature for January-October was 58.6 degrees, 1.22 degrees above average and topping the previous record set (1998 and 2010) by 0.04 degrees. Ocean temperatures by themselves were 1.03 degrees above average, the highest on record for this period, beating the previous record (1998) by 0.05 degrees.
  • Warmest 12-month block: The period of November 2013-October 2014 averaged 58.2 degrees, 1.2 degrees above the norm, breaking a record set just a month ago for warmest 12-month period.

The death toll from three days of what residents described as the heaviest storms to hit southern Morocco in decades has climbed to at least 32. Foul weather in Morocco has killed up to seven people, just a week after a previous storm left 36 dead, media reports said on Monday. Storms again lashed the south of the kingdom, with the resort of Agadir experiencing the equivalent of an entire year’s rainfall – more than 250 millimetres (10 inches) – between Friday and Sunday. The bad weather, which finally eased overnight, led to many rivers bursting their banks and causing widespread damage, especially in the Guelmim region 200 kilometres (125 miles) south of Agadir, which has been declared a disaster area. No official death toll has yet been released. “Another catastrophe: floods kill seven,” headlined the Arabic-language daily al-Massae. The paper, as well as another daily and At-Tajdid, both reported “anonymous official sources” as saying that two college students drowned on Friday in the Azilal region of the Anti-Atlas mountain range, and a youth was swept away southwest of Marrakesh.
