Arab League calls urgent meeting to torpedo Israel’s annexation plans
The Arab League will hold a virtual meeting to discuss how to organize opposition to Israel’s plan to annex large swathes of Judea and Samaria, it announced on Monday. The meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, will be carried out by video conference and include the participation of Arab foreign ministers from across the Middle East. The ministers will “discuss in their virtual meeting providing political, legal and financial support to the Palestinian leadership to confront the Israeli plans,” the Arab League’s deputy secretary Hossam Zaki said. The meeting was called at the request of the Palestinian Authority. Last week, the Arab League’s Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that Israel’s plans risked “igniting tension in the region.” He accused Israel of “exploiting the world’s preoccupation with the novel coronavirus to impose a new reality on the ground.”

Syria reports Israeli missile attack near Damascus, 7 killed
Israel attacked an ammunition dump south of Damascus early on Monday, SANA, Syria’s official news agency, reports. The attack took place at around 5:00 a.m., a Syrian military source told SANA. The source said that most of the Israeli missiles were intercepted and shot down. Nevertheless, reports from Damascus said that large explosions were heard from the ammunition dump. The missiles were launched from Lebanese air space, according to the report. Israel has attacked from Lebanese air space before. The report, quoting the military source, initially said that there were no human casualties. However, SANA later said, “Three civilians were martyred and four others wounded, including a child, because shrapnel from Israeli missiles fell on houses.” It later raised the number to seven. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based opposition war monitoring group, said the Israeli missile strike targeted an Iranian stronghold near the capital that housed its forces. Israel did not confirm or deny the report. However, Arutz 7 reports that Defense Minister Naftali Bennett “alluded” to a coming operation against Iranian forces based in Syria.

Hong Kong holds first major protest in over a month
German police wearing riot gear and face masks tussled on Saturday with dozens of protesters demonstrating in central Berlin against the coronavirus lockdown on public life. Protesters shouted “I want my life back” and held up signs with slogans such as “Protect constitutional rights”, “Freedom isn’t everything but without freedom, everything is nothing”, and “Daddy, what is a kiss?” Police said on Twitter they had arrested more than 100 people. Like dozens of countries around the globe, Germany has put in place strict curbs on public activity to slow transmission of COVID-19, imposing its lockdown on March 17.

Yemen war: Separatists declare autonomous rule in south
Separatists in southern Yemen have declared self-rule, breaking a peace deal signed in November with the internationally recognised government.The Aden-based Southern Transitional Council (STC) declared a state of emergency, saying it would govern the port city and other southern provinces. The STC is supported by the United Arab Emirates. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government warned of “dangerous and catastrophic consequences”. “The announcement by the so-called transitional council of its intention to establish a southern administration is a resumption of its armed insurgency… and an announcement of its rejection and complete withdrawal from the Riyadh agreement,” Yemen’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Al-Hadhrami said in a statement.

US economy faces historic shock, unemployment rate higher than 16%
The shuttering of the U.S. economy due to the coronavirus pandemic is a shock of historic proportions that will likely push the national unemployment rate to 16% or higher this month and require more stimulus to ensure a strong rebound, a White House economic adviser said on Sunday. “It’s a really grave situation,” President Donald Trump’s adviser, Kevin Hassett, told the ABC program “This Week.” “This is the biggest negative shock that our economy, I think, has ever seen. We’re going to be looking at an unemployment rate that approaches rates that we saw during the Great Depression” of the 1930s, Hassett added. A record 26.5 million Americans have filed for jobless benefits since mid-March, and retail sales, homebuilding and consumer confidence have all cratered. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicts U.S. gross domestic product will contract at nearly a 40% annual rate in the second quarter, with unemployment cresting at 16% in the third quarter. But even next year, the CBO sees the jobless rate still averaging above 10 percent.

U.S. Could Be Weeks From Meat Shortages With Shutdowns Spreading
Plant shutdowns are leaving the U.S. dangerously close to meat shortages as coronavirus outbreaks spread to suppliers across the nation and the Americas. Almost a third of U.S. pork capacity is down, the first big poultry plants closed on Friday and experts are warning that domestic shortages are just weeks away. Brazil, the world’s No. 1 shipper of chicken and beef, saw its first major closure with the halt of a poultry plant owned by JBS SA, the world’s biggest meat company. Key operations are also down in Canada, the latest being a British Columbia poultry plant. While hundreds of plants in the Americas are still running, the staggering acceleration of supply disruptions is now raising questions over global shortfalls. Taken together, the U.S., Brazil and Canada account for about 65% of world meat trade. “It’s absolutely unprecedented,” said Brett Stuart, president of Denver-based consulting firm Global AgriTrends. “It’s a lose-lose situation where we have producers at the risk of losing everything and consumers at the risk of paying higher prices. Restaurants in a week could be out of fresh ground beef.” New U.S. shutdowns are hitting at a dizzying rate. Smithfield Foods Inc., the world’s No. 1 pork producer, said Friday it was closing another operation, this one in Illinois. That news hit less than an hour after Hormel Foods Corp. said it was idling two of its Jennie-O turkey plants in Minnesota. JBS said Sunday it will shutter a beef production facility in Wisconsin. The most-recent news added to a flurry of other halts announced in the space of just a few weeks.

Billions of people around the world exercised their religious freedom during Holy Week, but a new United Nations report threatens to undermine both this freedom and women’s rights. The report of Ahmed Shaheed, the U.N. expert responsible for protecting religious freedom, advances a “progressive” agenda of abortion and new “rights” based on membership in sexual identity groups. The report to the infamous U.N. Human Rights Council undermines the empowerment of women and girls by lumping their concerns together with novel claims based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It includes a controversial interpretation of “gender equality” that promotes acceptance of transgender ideology and the concept of multiple, fluid, “gender identities.” By focusing on the promotion of abortion and LGBT+ rights, the U.N. report turns the focus away from serious and pressing issues facing women and girls worldwide. Women comprise 52 percent of the victims of human trafficking each year, but the report makes no mention of this or of the work that religious groups do to combat it.

Chile’s government has said it will go ahead with a controversial plan to issue certificates to people who have recovered from Covid-19. The documents would be given to people to allow them to return to work, Deputy Health Minister Paula Daza said. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is “no evidence” that people who contract coronavirus are immune from being infected again. It said certificates could inspire false confidence and help it spread. But Ms Daza told reporters on Sunday: “One of the things that we know is that a person who has had the illness has a lower probability of becoming ill again.” She added that the certificates would not confirm that people had immunity to Covid-19, but rather state that they had recovered from the disease and had completed a period of isolation.

Asteroid 2020 HP6 to flyby Earth
A newly discovered asteroid designated 2020 HP6 will flyby Earth at a distance of 0.33 LD / 0.00084 AU (125 662 km / 78 082 miles) at 14:40 UTC on April 27, 2020. This is the 34th known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the 9th so far this month. 2020 HP6 was first observed at Pan-STARRS 1, Haleakala on April 22, five days before its close approach. The object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 6.7 and 15 m (22 – 50 feet).
