During a Wednesday morning meeting of the subcommittee of the Committee on Foreign Affairs and Security, the Regavim movement revealed worrisome details regarding the ongoing construction of a new Arab city on the edge of the desert, well inside Israeli-governed Area C in south Hebron Mountain, and, in fact in an area slated for an IDF firing zone, Srugim reported. The accelerated construction is spread over an area of some ten thousand acres, and includes building hundreds of residential homes, schools, clinics and mosques. Foreign elements are funding the blatantly illegal development of the city’s road and electric infrastructure, including the EU, United Arab Emirates, and Abu Dhabi.

Headline: Gazans launch campaign calling on Saudi Arabia to help them make pilgrimage to Mecca
It has been more than two years since Gaza residents were last able to visit Mecca for the hajj pilgrimage. In a bid to fulfill their religious duty, Gazans have launched a social media campaign urging Saudi Arabia to intervene and demand Egypt reopen the Rafah border crossing, thereby allowing them to leave Gaza. The campaign, spread on Twitter and Facebook under the hashtag “Gaza misses Umrah (the Mecca pilgrimage),” was launched in light of the approaching visit of Saudi Arabia’s King Salman to Cairo later this week. The Gazan activists called on Salman to “intervene and mount pressure on Egypt to open Rafah border crossing for Gaza residents, who have been deprived from the Umrah for three years.”
Amid Gazans’ protests, a new Palestinian initiative has been developed during the recent wave of Palestinian violence against Israelis. The initiative, called “Umrah for every martyr,” aims at commemorating Palestinian martyrs by preforming hajj on their behalf.

Headline: ISIS threatens American troops in Egypt’s Sinai
The growing threat of Islamic State and other jihadists in Egypt has in part spurred the US government to consider pulling its forces from a base in the Sinai Peninsula, CNN reported late Tuesday. According to the report, the Obama administration is examining the relocation of US and international peacekeeping troops from a base in the volatile northern Sinai to areas in the peninsula’s south. About 700 American forces are reportedly involved in the maneuver that Washington is contemplating. The United States now sees the threat of attacks by ISIS-linked groups and Islamist militants as escalating in the northern Sinai region which borders with Israel, CNN cited defense officials as saying. Washington is reportedly in talks with Israel and Egypt regarding the possible shift of the US-led peacekeepers take make up the Multinational Force and Observers (MFO), who oversee the terms of the 1979 peace treaty between the neighboring nations. The officials who spoke to CNN added that the potential move would not constitute a US retreat due to the threat posed by ISIS, stressing that the US would still be able to fulfill the terms of its duties under the peace treaty.

Headline: Report: Hamas taps over 1,000 terror operatives to dig Gaza tunnels
Hamas employs more than 1,000 operatives to excavate underground tunnels in the Gaza Strip, Israel Radio reported Thursday. According to the report, the terrorist organization invests hundreds of thousands of dollars each month in the digging activities, paying each operative engaged in the process some 300 to 400 dollars a month. Hamas also heavily invests in smuggling building materials, including raw materials and excavation machinery from Egypt and Israel. To prepare for a possible future incursion with Israel, the Palestinian terrorist organization’s elite ‘Nukhbah’ unit carries out drills practicing different scenarios simulating offenses in the tunnels near the border fence with Israel. Several of the members of the unit have been killed in recent months in tunnel collapses in the coastal Palestinian enclave, according to the Israel Radio report.

Headline: Israel starts building new part of controversial West Bank wall
Israel began construction on a controversial part of its separation barrier in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, near a Palestinian Christian town, an AFP journalist reported. Cranes began lifting eight-metre(yard)-high blocks into place near Beit Jala, south of Jerusalem and close to Bethlehem, a photographer witnessed. This part of the wall could cut Palestinians from their olive groves. Nicola Khamis, mayor of Beit Jala, condemned what she saw as a land grab. “This land is for our families, our children,” she said by phone from the bridge next to the construction site. The Israeli army referred questions to the defence ministry, which did not immediately respond. Residents of Beit Jala fear the construction of the wall may lead to the expansion of the nearby Israeli settlements of Gilo and Har Gilo.

ISIS forces in southern Syria overran several Jordanian border crossings south of the Yarmouk River on Tuesday, April 5. This disastrous turn of events is illustrated by an exclusive picture obtained by debkafile of an ISIS fighter unfurling the organization’s flag at one of the crossings which sports a Jordanian flag. The picture taken the same day shocked the royal court and the Jordanian military command in Amman. Our military sources report that an urgent conference was called at the Military Operations Command (MOC), north of Amman to devise measures for containing the Islamic State’s leap into more territory on the Syrian-Jordanian border. It was attended by Jordanian, American, Israeli, Saudi and UAE officers. Jordan has meanwhile stepped forward to stem this flow of strength to ISIS. debkafile’s military and intelligence sources report that Jordanian military intelligence officers specializing in guerrilla warfare have been infiltrating rebel-held areas in the South, especially Daraa, the regional hub, for the purpose of whipping rebel militias together into a front against ISIS. These officers have succeeded in setting up a joint war room with the three biggest rebel groups in the south, the Southern Front, Jaish Fatah al-Junub and Jaish al-Islam, for action under the direction of the MOC outside Amman. On Monday, April 4, the joint force saw combat, when rebel forces under Jordanian commanders launched an attack to drive the ISIS forces back into their former corner in the narrow triangle near the meeting-point of the Syrian, Israeli and Jordanian borders. ISIS hit back with suicide bombers, who blew themselves up next to the Jordanian-led rebel assault force. It was the first time ISIS had unleashed suicide bombers so close to the Israeli border.

Headline: Hezbollah said building missile base in Syria, to strike at Israel
The Lebanese terror group Hezbollah has reportedly been constructing a fortified base inside Syria that it may be using to store Iranian ballistic missiles with the range to hit Israel. Satellite images of an area on the northern Lebanese-Syrian border show that Hezbollah has been consolidating positions it conquered from Syrian rebels in June 2013, global intelligence company Stratfor said Wednesday. Photos show several facilities in the region around Qusair, including one large compound surrounded by an earthen berm. Villages up to four kilometers (2.5 miles) from the base have been razed to enable clear observation of the territory, and tunnels have reportedly been dug back under the border and into Lebanon. Other sources said there are long-range missiles at the base including Iranian-manufactured Shabab-1, Shabab-2, and Fateh-110 ballistic missiles, although there was no satellite confirmation to back up the claim. “While these missiles could prove crucial in the event of a large-scale Israeli ground offensive against Hezbollah in Lebanon, they are not beyond the reach of the Israeli Air Force,” the report said. “Notably, imagery does not show significant underground facilities at the base capable of protecting this weaponry.”

Two bombs dropped by the Saudi Arabian Air Force on a crowded marketplace in Yemen on March 15 were American-made, claims Human Rights Watch (HRW). The UN estimates the death toll to be at least 97 dead, among them 25 children. HRW examined the bomb blast fragmentations found at the site and determined they came from a US-made “GBU-31 satellite-guided bomb, which consists of a US-supplied MK-84 2,000lb bomb mated with a JDAM satellite guidance kit, also US-supplied,” HRW’s report says. “One of the deadliest strikes against civilians in Yemen’s year-long war involved US-supplied weapons, illustrating tragically why countries should stop selling arms to Saudi Arabia,” said Priyanka Motaparthy, emergency researcher at HRW. Mastaba, a village in Yemen’s northern Hajja governorate, some 45km from the Saudi border, was attacked at noon. Two bombs were dropped successively with a short period. The first blasted right in front of a complex of shops and a restaurant, the second exploded a short while later near the entrance to the market, within the crowd fleeing the airstrike, HRW reports.

Islamic State fighters launched attacks on government-held areas near Damascus overnight in what a Syrian source said appeared to be a response to the group’s loss of ground elsewhere. The group said in a statement it had attacked the Tishrin power station, 50 km (30 miles) northeast of the capital. The Syrian military source acknowledged the group had staged assaults, but said all those who took part had been killed. The Syrian source said Tuesday night’s attacks outside Damascus appeared to be the jihadist group’s response to its reverses around Palmyra. Islamic State attackers, using five bomb-laden cars, also struck military positions near the Dumeir military airport (2nd photo) 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Damascus, killing 12 soldiers, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based organization that tracks the war, said. Islamic State claimed the bombings in an online statement, saying it carried out a suicide attack on government forces which were moving north from the military airport. The Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS) launched an important assault in southern Damascus on Thursday, resulting in the capture of a strategic checkpoint that was under the control of their former allies in the Al-Nusra Front (Syrian Al-Qaeda group). According to an Al-Masdar correspondent in Damascus City, ISIS reportedly captured the ‘Arouba Checkpoint after a violent battle with the Al-Nusra Front at the Yalda-Yarmouk axis. The capture of this checkpoint means that ISIS now has access to the reconciled village of Yalda, which could turn disastrous for all non-ISIS parties in the long-run as the terrorist group grows their presence in southern Damascus.

Syrian regime troops and allied militias are preparing a massive counteroffensive in southwest Aleppo after the Al-Nusra Front led a successful operation to seize the strategic town of Al-Eis. “The [Syrian] army command has not issued the order the start the battle, however preparations indicate a major confrontation is coming,” a Lebanese daily with an editorial line supportive of Hezbollah reported Thursday morning. Al-Akhbar claimed that despite the fierce regime bombardment of Al-Nusra Front controlled areas in southwest Aleppo—including Al-Eis—Syrian army troops and its allied “continue to show self-restraint.” “Options are still open for the army and its allies; the promised operation has not started yet,” the newspaper added. The Al-Akhbar article comes a day after the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that pro-regime forces had launched a wide-scale offensive on midnight Tuesday in a bid to regain control of Al-Eis, which was seized by Al-Nusra Front over the weekend in an assault backed by other rebel groups. The United States could increase the number of fire support bases in Iraq in continued efforts to help the Iraqi security forces recapture the city of Mosul. Fire support bases are temporary military camps used to provide artillery fire in support of ground troops. Iraq launched a significant offensive recently to retake Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city that was seized by the Islamic State in June 2014. “As the ISF progresses toward isolating Mosul, there may be a situation where there is another base that is opened — or re-opened from years past — that would be used in the same manner as a fire support base,” Rear Adm. Andrew L. “Woody” Lewis told reporters on Wednesday, Military.com reports. No additional “fire bases” have been deployed since March, when about 200 Marines equipped with four M114 155 mm howitzers set up base about 60 miles southeast of Mosul. Kurdish forces of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) on Wednesday clashed with Islamist rebels, and killed and injured dozens near the Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Maqsoud in Syria’s northern city of Aleppo, leadership of the YPG said on Wednesday. The Kurdish neighborhood of Sheikh Mqsoud in Aleppo –held by the YPG fighters– has been exposed to heavy shelling by Islamist rebels over the past few days. Kurdish militants killed five members of the Turkish security forces on Thursday in a series of clashes and bomb attacks in a town under a military lockdown in the southeast of the country, the Dogan news agency reported. The Turkish security forces were carrying out an operation in the town of Nusaybin in Mardin province where the government has been waging a blistering offensive against the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). Iran intends to produce the powerful explosive Octogen for use in the warheads of its missiles to improve their “destructive and penetration power,” Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Hossein Dehqan said Wednesday. Octogen is used as an explosive in penetrating missile warheads and as a solid rocket fuel — but is also employed as part of the detonator in an atomic bomb. During a ceremony to inaugurate a Octogen production plant, Dehqan stressed Iran’s goal of gaining the know-how to make the explosive material in order to avoid relying on external sources. “Concurrently with its efforts to increase the precision-striking power of its weapons systems, the Defense Ministry has also paid attention to boosting the destructive and penetration power of different weapons’ warheads and has put on its agenda the acquisition of the technical know-how to produce Octogen explosive materials and Octogen-based weapons,” he said, according to a report from the semi-official FARS news agency.

Armed South Sudanese rebels have begun taking up positions in the capital, a risky but crucial step to end two years of war. The Associated Press and other journalists on Thursday toured one of the rebel camps where fighters dressed in green fatigues stood in semi-circle formation, chanting call-and-response war songs and waving their AK-47s in unison. More than 900 of the rebels have set up camp in two designated sites in Juba as part of a process to secure the city for the scheduled return on April 18 of their leader, Riek Machar. The odds of a unity government taking hold in Libya got smaller Wednesday when the rival Tripoli-based administration backed down from its promise to give up power. The National Salvation Government ordered security forces to stay on the job and continue protecting the administration. It also said it would hold the new unity government responsible for any violations of its security. Tripoli-based authorities said Tuesday that they were disbanding their government and that its prime minister, parliament and ministry chiefs were all stepping down. But it said a day later that the new U.N-brokered unity government violated Libyan sovereignty. “The choice of the new government is a purely internal national affair in which no one has the right to interfere,” it said in a statement.

Headline: Growing US Debt to ‘Hasten Demise’ of Dollar as World Reserve Currency
It may turn out the economy did not grow at all in the first quarter. Trade data released Tuesday show the U.S. deficit widened more than expected to $47.1 billion in February and was a bigger drag on growth than expected. It’s the latest economic metric that chiseled away at the tracking model for first quarter growth. The median of economists who participate in the CNBC/Moody’s Analytics Rapid Update is now 0.5 percent for tracking GDP growth, down from 0.9 percent last week. Their average forecast for growth is 1.1 percent. Given the average, and substantial, revisions to government GDP data, that 0.5 percent could easily turn into a negative number, or a much higher number. That is based on a CNBC study that examined every report going back to 1990 and found an average error rate of 1.3 percentage points in either direction.

Top Zika investigators now believe that the birth defect microcephaly and the paralyzing Guillain-Barre syndrome may be just the most obvious maladies caused by the mosquito-borne virus. Fueling that suspicion are recent discoveries of serious brain and spinal cord infections – including encephalitis, meningitis and myelitis – in people exposed to Zika. Evidence that Zika’s damage may be more varied and widespread than initially believed adds pressure on affected countries to control mosquitoes and prepare to provide intensive – and, in some cases, lifelong – care to more patients. The newly suspected disorders can cause paralysis and permanent disability – a clinical outlook that adds urgency to vaccine development efforts. Scientists are of two minds about why these new maladies have come into view. The first is that, as the virus is spreading through such large populations, it is revealing aspects of Zika that went unnoticed in earlier outbreaks in remote and sparsely populated areas. The second is that the newly detected disorders are more evidence that the virus has evolved. “What we’re seeing are the consequences of this virus turning from the African strain to a pandemic strain,” said Dr. Peter Hotez, dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.

Headline: Death toll from yellow fever in Angola rises to 225: Minister
The death toll from a yellow fever pandemic in Angola has risen to 225, the southern African country’s heath minster says, warning of a possible surge in casualties. Luis Sambo said on Tuesday that some 1,600 cases have been recorded so far. He said that the disease, which broke out late last year, has spread to 16 of the country’s 18 provinces. “We need to increase the response capacity… in both technological resources [such] as medicines and vaccines, as well as in personnel,” he said. Last month, the World Health Organization (WHO) revealed that almost 160 people had died of yellow fever in Angola. The United Nations body also warned that a breakdown in sanitation services and garbage collection has caused a surge in malaria, cholera and chronic diarrhea in the country.

A team of astronomers from the United States and Canada have discovered one of the youngest and brightest free-floating, planet-like objects located in the Sun‘s stellar “neighborhood”, media reports said. Identified as 2MASS J1119-1137, the 10-million-year-old object is between four and eight times the mass of Jupiter, which means that the object falls in the mass range between a large planet and a small brown dwarf star, according to the website Science Daily, which referred to the study on the matter.

Headline: Vanuatu hit by third strong earthquake in five days
The U.S. Geological Survey reported a third earthquake that struck the Pacific Island of Vanuatu in merely five days. The group reported that the most recent one was a 6.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the island nation on April 7, 2016, however, no major damages or casualties have been reported by the local authorities. The U.S. Geological Survey further pointed out that the quake is said to have struck 100 kilometers west of the village of Sola, and 460 kilometers northwest of Vanuatu’s capital, Port Vila. It added that the quake struck at a depth of 33 kilometers. This quake is the third in a series of earthquakes of the same magnitude that have been reported in the region. Shadrack Welegtabit, director of Vanuatu’s National Disaster Management Office reportedly told the local media, “We are not sure what has triggered the recent spate of earthquakes.”
