Headline: United Church of Canada Votes in Favor of Divestment, Sanctions against Israel
The United Church of Canada (UCC) voted in favor of divestment from Israel Tuesday during its 42nd General Council meeting “to address the illegal occupation of Palestinian territories by the State of Israel.” The resolution, according to a statement on the Council’s website, calls for the development of programs “of education and advocacy in cooperation with our partners, related to divestment from and economic sanctions against all corporations and institutions complicit in and benefiting from the illegal occupations.” UCC also urged its members to refrain from “tourism [in Israel] which bolsters the oppression of Palestinians.” The UCC commission which passed the divestment resolution encouraged “all courts, bodies and members of The United Church of Canada to apply such divestment strategies and sanctions, until such time as the occupation of the Palestinian territories ends.” With more than two million members, the UCC is Canada’s largest Protestant church. Tuesday’s resolution against Israel follows a 2012 UCC boycott of all goods made in Judea and Samaria.

Arab worshipers have begun protesting on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem on Friday, over the comatose state of a hunger-striking terrorist being held in Israeli prison. Several police units are at the scene, attempting to restore order, according to Maariv. Terrorist Mohammed Allaan, who was being held in Israeli prison for his crimes, lost consciousness on Friday and he is being artificially respirated at Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon. Allaan’s strike is on its 59th day. The “protestors” are allegedly demanding the Israel Police immediately release him. Several dozen Palestinian Arab prisoners held in Israeli jails launched a hunger strike last week to protest what they term as “humiliating treatment” from jailers and poor imprisonment conditions. Dozens more joined them on Sunday, bringing the total to about 180.

Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah delivered a televised speech on Friday which was viewed by the Shi’ite movement’s followers who marked the nine-year anniversary of the Second Lebanon War. Nasrallah, who gave the speech from his hiding place, praised “the heroes of the resistance who fought to their last drop of blood in July 2006.” “Allah gave us this victory, which can be considered a real miracle and which is impossible to explain in materialistic terms,” the Hezbollah leader said. “This was a heroic clash that included the destruction of dozens of IDF tanks and the killing of dozens of elite soldiers who felt what it was like to be in hell,” Nasrallah said. The Hezbollah leader spoke of the prospect of renewed fighting with Israel, saying: “Israel has no military strategy that could bring it victory in Lebanon.” “Your army will be routed,” Nasrallah said, addressing Israel.

Syria Headline: Rebels Close in on Assad’s Latakia Bastion
Two people were killed and 14 wounded Thursday in a rare rebel rocket attack on the provincial capital of President Bashar al-Assad’s coastal heartland, a monitoring group said. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, rebel groups stationed around the city of Latakia fired rockets into the city center and along the waterfront. “At least two people were killed and 14 people were wounded when rockets fell on March 8 street, near the (Islamic authority) Dar al-Ifta building in the middle of the city,” Observatory head Rami Abdel Rahman said. He said rebel factions – mostly from Islamist groups – were taking up positions overlooking the city and firing rockets before leaving for areas under their control.

Syria Headline: Syrian police fire tear gas to control prison riot in Hama city
The Syrian police tear-gassed tens of inmates in a bid to quell a riot that engulfed the central prison of Syria’s Hama city, a monitor group reported on Friday. Citing “crosschecked sources,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the Central Prison of Hama is witnessing a riot by inmates, who were detained without trials. The UK-based watchdog group said it had received a video footage, showing inmates shouting and badmouthing the authorities inside the prison. Activists said gunfire was heard in the vicinity of the prison, as the government forces succeeded in storming the jails and taking some of the prisoners to unknown destination. The watchdog added that tens of inmates fainted as a result of the tear gas firing by the authorities. The Syrian opposition accuses the government of detaining thousands of political activists without trials.

Iraq Headline: Iraq truck bomb kills dozens at Baghdad market
At least 59 people have been killed after a truck bomb exploded in north-eastern Baghdad, Iraqi officials say. The blast tore through the crowded Jameela market in the predominantly Shia district of Sadr City. The Sunni jihadist group, Islamic State (IS), said it was behind the bombing and that it targeted Shia militiamen. Thursday’s bomb attack in Sadr City was one of the deadliest in the capital since Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi took office a year ago. In a statement posted on Twitter, IS said the truck bomb targeted Shia militiamen from the Mahdi Army and the Popular Mobilisation forces, who have been battling the jihadist group in northern and western Iraq for more than a year. Sadr City has been the target of several bomb attacks this year claimed by IS militants, who consider Shia to be heretics.

Iraq Headline: ISIS attacks in and around Iraqi refinery town
ISIS militants attacked the outskirts of Iraq’s northern oil refinery town of Baiji overnight with car bombs and clashed with the army and Shiite militias in the town’s western districts, the local mayor and security sources said Friday. At least three militia fighters were killed Friday when ISIS launched car bomb attacks against a makeshift headquarters in al-Rayash, about 18 km (5 miles) south of Baiji, a militia leader and a source in the Salahuddin Operations Command said. Mortars in an adjacent area killed two civilians, according to the source in the operations command, the Iraqi military’s command centre for the province of Salahuddin, where Baiji is situated. Baiji Mayor Mahmoud al-Jabouri said ISIS used 12 car bombs and more than 200 fighters in the offensive. “The attack started at 2 a.m. (2300 GMT),” he said. “They came from the direction of Camp Speicher”, a former U.S. base outside the city of Tikrit. Jabouri said “tens” of security forces and militia fighters were killed or wounded in the violence, which also saw ongoing clashes in Baiji’s western districts of Sikak and Tamim.

Kurdish forces in northern Iraq who are fighting ISIL were attacked with chemical weapons a few days ago, the German defence ministry said on Thursday. “There was a chemical weapons attack” southwest of Arbil, a ministry spokesman said, adding that some Kurdish fighters suffered respiratory problems while German military trainers were unhurt. The chemical agent had been delivered with mortar or artillery shells, said the spokesman, who did not say who was suspected of carrying out the attack. “American and Iraqi specialists from Baghdad are on their way to find out what happened,” he added. Germany has been supporting the Kurdish peshmerga fighters with arms shipments and weapons training since September to back the fight against ISIL, and currently has about 90 personnel on the ground. “German soldiers were not affected or in danger,” the spokesman said. “The protection of our soldiers in northern Iraq is already at the highest level.”

Seven suspected members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) rebel group were killed in clashes overnight that erupted when the rebels attacked military posts in eastern Turkey, the army said Thursday. The attacks are the latest in an escalating cycle of violence between Turkish security forces and Kurdish rebels that has left a 2013 ceasefire agreed by the PKK in tatters. PKK fighters launched an attack with guns and rockets on a command post in southeastern town of Silopi on the border with Iraq and Syria, prompting clashes that left four militants dead, an army statement said. The PKK also attacked a military base and police station in the Agri province near the Iranian border, where three of their number were killed in clashes with the security forces, it said. Meanwhile, on Friday, A man was shot dead as members of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) clashed with Turkish security forces in Turkey’s Kurdish-majority southeast, security sources said Friday. A Kurdish militia that has captured swathes of northern Syria from Islamic State has signed up thousands of fighters in recent months as it seeks to tighten control over newly won territory. The People’s Protection Units (YPG), which has been fighting Islamic State with U.S.-led air support, says it now controls territory the size of Qatar and Kuwait combined. YPG spokesman Redur Xelil, speaking to Reuters, said the YPG had drawn 5,000 new recruits, growing to 40,000 fighters. After a period of rapid territorial gains, the priority was to strengthen defensive positions in newly captured land. “This is the priority now but this does not mean there are no plans to hit Daesh in places near the front lines,” Xelil said, using an Arabic name for the Islamic State group also known as ISIS and ISIL. “Attack is the best form of defence.” The YPG has doubled the amount of territory it controls between the Euphrates river and the Syrian border with Iraq to 21,000 square kilometers (8,000 square miles) this year, Xelil said. It also controls an area of the northwest known as Afrin, and parts of Aleppo. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the war using its own sources, said the YPG had grown by 4,000-5,000 fighters in the last three months, though it gave a bigger estimate for the militia’s overall size at more than 50,000. Turkey’s concern about the expansion of Kurdish influence in northern Syria is seen as a major factor behind its new plan to help Syrian rebels seize Islamic State’s last remaining zone of control at the Turkish border in an area north of Aleppo. A representative for a pro-Islamic State hacking group issued a chilling warning to members of the U.S. military and government Wednesday, promising that “very soon” followers of the organization would retaliate for overseas bombing targeting the terror organization. Speaking to TheBlaze using smartphone messenger application Kik, a representative for the Islamic State Hacking Division said the group is constantly spying on U.S. servicemen. The organization on Tuesday published personal information purporting to belong to U.S. military and government online. When asked exactly what could be expected to be seen “soon,” the member replied, “you will see when US military and government personnel start getting beheaded in their homes.” The individual would not provide specifics on the Islamic State Hacking Division, declining to say where the group is based or how many members are in its ranks. He did, however, go after Anonymous, the hacking group which recently targeted the Islamic State.

Al-Qaida leader Ayman al-Zawahiri appears to have pledged the group’s loyalty to the new leader of the Afghan Taliban, a move that could strengthen both terror organizations as they fend off challenges from Islamic State. “We pledge our allegiance … [to the] commander of the faithful, Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansour, may God protect him,” said Zawahiri during a 10-minute recording that surfaced on the Internet Thursday. U.S. counterterrorism officials are still studying the message but said there was “no reason to believe it is not authentic.” Private analysts said the recording bears similarities to other messages attributed to Zawahiri, but it was released with more speed than usual. “In al-Qaida’s world, especially in Zawahiri’s world, they’re very deliberative,” said Thomas Joscelyn, senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies and senior editor of The Long War Journal. “They go through a very rigorous sharia process to figure out how to handle these types of matters.” Afghan officials announced the death of former Taliban leader Mullah Omar late last month, with Taliban officials confirming it on July 31. Joscelyn said this recording appeared to have been made just one day later, on August 1. “It suggests to me that they basically knew about this beforehand and were planning on pledging allegiance to Mansour as soon as Omar’s death was announced,” he said. That level of planning and coordination could suggest al-Qaida and the Taliban may be trying to forge an even closer relationship.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said Thursday that coalition talks with the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) had ended in failure and early elections looked now to be the “only option.” The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) led by Davutoglu had negotiated for several weeks with the CHP, after losing its overall parliamentary majority in June 7 polls for the first time since it came to power in 2002. “We have not been successful in assuring a favorable base for the creation of a government,” Davutoglu told reporters after a final meeting with CHP leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu. “There is a strong possibility of appealing to the national will,” he said in reference to new snap polls following the inconclusive June elections. “Actually the snap elections have become the only option for Turkey,” he added. Davutoglu said AKP negotiators had offered a “medium-term reform government” to the CHP but “no common ground has been found.” Meanwhile, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has argued that Turkey’s government has been already changed into a de facto presidential system, calling for a constitutional framework to “finalize” this transition. “You can either accept it or not. Turkey’s governmental system has been de facto changed in this regard. What should be done now is to finalize the legal framework of this de facto situation with a new constitution,” Erdoğan said on Friday during a speech in his hometown of Rize.

Headline: US general says Islamic State gaining in Afghanistan
The Islamic State is making small inroads in Afghanistan and could grow into a more worrisome threat, a U.S. Army general said Thursday. Speaking to reporters at the Pentagon from his offices in Kabul, Brig. Gen. Wilson Shoffner said the Islamic State, which rose to prominence by capturing large swaths of Syria and Iraq, is not yet capable of coordinating military operations in more than one part of Afghanistan at a time. “We see their capabilities increasing somewhat but not to the point where they can conduct operations that you’re seeing in Iraq and Syria, although we do note the potential for them to evolve into something more serious, more dangerous,” he said. Shoffner said the Islamic State’s fighters are clashing with the Taliban in areas of Afghanistan where the Islamic State is encroaching on Taliban territory. He called this a destabilizing development, with Afghan civilians caught in the middle. “That’s a security issue that we are committed to helping the Afghan government resolve,” Shoffner said. He declined to say whether U.S. aircraft have attacked Islamic State targets in Afghanistan.

Headline: S. Sudan Pulls Negotiators From Peace Talks
Talks to end South Sudan’s conflict appeared in jeopardy Friday, as President Salva Kiir canceled a planned trip to the site of the talks in Ethiopia and the government recalled its negotiating team. Cabinet Affairs Minister Martin Elias Lomoro said officials want to determine whether there is a split in the rebel camp. Two rebel generals announced this week they are longer allied with rebel leader Riek Machar and are setting up their own movement. If the president is going to go to Addis Ababa, Lomoro said, “he must go with clear mind as to who he is going to meet and negotiate with.” One of the defecting rebel generals, Gathoth Gatkuoth, condemned both Machar and President Kiir in an interview with VOA. The general said the two leaders are taking part in peace talks in Addis Ababa not for the good of the South Sudanese people, but because they want to secure their positions in a future government.

Headline: ISIS in Libya kills senior cleric of rival group
Libya’s Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) affiliate is battling a rival Islamist group in the central city of Sirte, killing one of its senior clerics and besieging and shelling a residential area housing its supporters, officials and witnesses said Thursday. The clashes have killed between 13 and 49 people, with officials giving different casualty counts. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. The ISIS affiliate last week called on residents of a northern Sirte neighborhood working in the police, the judiciary and the financial sector to pledge allegiance to the group or face death, local journalist Ezzeldin Ahmed said. In response, a group of ultraconservative Muslim clerics in the area refused to pledge allegiance to ISIS and urged residents to rise up against it. One of the clerics was found dead Monday, setting off the clashes, he said.

Around 37 people have been killed in clashes between ISIS fighters and an Islamist group that is challenging the grip of the ultra-hardliners on the city of Sirte in central Libya, residents said. Earlier this week, a Salafist Muslim group and armed residents attacked ISIS fighters in Sirte, located about 500 km east of the capital Tripoli, accusing them of killing a prominent preacher in Sirte. Fighting raged until early Friday before dying down when ISIS took back a district which the Salafists and armed residents had tried to seize, residents said. “Families are leaving Sirte,” said a resident, asking, like others, not to be named. He said Islamic State fighters were searching for people with weapons. A similar battle occurred in the eastern city of Derna in June when ISIS was expelled by rival Islamist fighters who teamed up with locals angered by the arrival of foreign militants and clerics. Islamic State launched an offensive to retake Derna this week.

Headline: Kashmir villagers flee amid Pakistan-India gunfire
Pakistan and India traded heavy gunfire on Friday, killing one person and forcing villagers in divided Kashmir to flee to safety even as the Pakistani president renewed his offer of talks with India to resolve the issue of the disputed region. A Pakistani woman was killed and her two daughters and husband were wounded when an Indian mortar struck their home in the Nezapir sector of the divided region, the Pakistani military said. Earlier Friday, the Pakistani military said “unprovoked shooting” came from the Indian-held side of Kashmir, from Nezapir and Rawalakot sectors, and that Pakistani forces were responding. Mohammad Ansar, a local police official in Pakistan’s part of Kashmir said rockets and mortars fired by Indian were landing near villages in the two sectors since the morning hours and that terrified villagers were fleeing to safer places. However, Indian army spokesman Lt. Col. Manish Mehta blamed Pakistan, saying the Pakistanis have been firing mortars, grenades and machine-guns at Indian positions in the Poonch sector “intermittently for the last five days.”

Headline: Greece backs bailout after all-night debate
The Greek parliament approved the country’s latest bailout after an all-night session Friday, as Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras faced a revolt within his own party. Over seven hours of heated and angry debate, much of it within Tsipiras’ Syriza Party, led to the vote in favor of accepting Greece’s third bailout in five years. The European Union is prepared to loan Greece 85 billion Euros ($95 billion), as a 3.2 billion Euro ($3.57 billion) payment to the European Central Bank (ECB) on a previous loan looms with an Aug. 20 deadline. Failure to pay the ECB would likely end external funding to Greek banks and lead to the country’s exit from the Eurozone of countries using the Euro. Greece, dealing with a long-term recession, must make drastic economic cuts and privatize much of its infrastructure, part of austerity measures demanded by creditors. The new bailout will make essential financing available in the next three years.

Those that run food banks all over America say that demand for their services just continues to explode. It always amazes me that there are still people out there that insist that an “economic collapse” is not happening. From their air-conditioned homes in their cushy suburban neighborhoods they mock the idea that the U.S. economy is crumbling. But if they would just go down and visit the local food banks in their areas, they would see how much people are hurting. According to Feeding America spokesman Ross Fraser, 46 million Americans got food from a food bank at least one time during 2014. Because the demand has become so overwhelming, some food banks are cutting back on the number of days they operate and the amount of food that is given to each family. As you will see below, many impoverished Americans are lining up at food banks as early as 6:30 in the morning just so that they can be sure to get something before the food runs out. And yet there are still many people out there that have the audacity to say that everything is just fine in America. Shame on them for ignoring the pain of millions upon millions of their fellow citizens. Poverty in America is getting worse, not better. And no amount of spin from Barack Obama or his apologists can change that fact.

Headline: Saudi Arabia issues 1st bond in 8 years to fill budget hole
Saudi Arabia has issued its first government bonds since 2007 to cover a growing budget deficit and its neighbor, the United Arab Emirates, has scrapped fuel subsidies as the big oil exporters scramble to deal with sharply lower crude prices. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Finance announced Tuesday it had issued 20 billion riyals ($5.33 billion) of sovereign development bonds. It floated five-year bonds with a coupon of 1.92%, seven-year bonds at 2.34%, and 10-year bonds at 2.65%. The ministry said the debt was sold mainly to domestic private banks. It also said it sold 15 billion riyals of bonds to a government-funded organization in June. The country will probably issue more debt later. Reuters reported that Saudi Arabia is expected to float 100 billion to 200 billion riyals worth of debt this year.

The waters of the eastern Pacific Ocean are heating up, scientists say, building towards a strong El Niño event that could rival the intensity of the record 1997 event that wreaked weather-related havoc across the globe, from mudslides in California to fires in Australia. According to the latest forecast released Thursday by NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, this year’s El Niño is “significant and strengthening.” “There is a greater than 90% chance that El Niño will continue through Northern Hemisphere winter 2015-16, and around an 85% chance it will last into early spring 2016,” the NOAA said in a statement. Bill Patzert, a climatologist for the NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in La Cañada Flintridge, told the Los Angeles Times that it had the potential to be the “Godzilla El Niño.” The weather phenomenon largely became a part of the public vernacular during the 1997 El Niño. It caused devastating flooding in the western U.S. and drought in Indonesia. It was blamed for deadly virus outbreaks in Africa and rising coffee prices around the world.
