Headline: ISIL declines invite to Gaza War but offers training

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant has decided not to intervene in the Hamas war against Israel. Islamist sources said ISIL rejected several appeals by Al Qaida-aligned militias in the Gaza Strip to send money and weapons to fight Israel. They said ISIL responded that its priority was the establishment of a so-called caliphate in Iraq, Syria and Turkey. “ISIL offered training for Palestinians who come to its camps in Iraq and Syria, but nothing more,” the source said. The sources said ISIL was quietly investing resources in the Gaza Strip and neighboring Egypt. But the movement was working with other groups, including Ansar Al Sharia and Army of Islam, for recruitment of Egyptians and Palestinians for the current war in Iraq and Syria. In mid-2014, several Salafist groups in the Gaza Strip sought funding from ISIL. Some of them posted photographs of cells loyal to ISIL chief Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi.

Headline:    Sources: Iran’s terror wing plots attacks in Israel

The Palestinian Authority has information indicating the Iranian-backed Hezbollah terrorist organization has been seeking in recent days to recruit militants to carry out attacks in the West Bank and inside Israel, a PA intelligence official told WND. The official said the PA received the information from seven former members of Fatah’s so-called military wing, the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade. The former Fatah fighters said they were contacted by Qais Obeid, an Israeli Arab and a grandson of former Knesset member Diyab Obeid. Obeid defected to Lebanon and became a senior officer for Hezbollah. The former Al Aqsa Brigade members said Obeid offered them money to re-launch a cell to carry out terror attacks in the West Bank and inside Israel. While the Al Aqsa members turned Obeid down, the PA is concerned that other West Bank and Jerusalem-based jihadists may already be on Hezbollah’s payroll, the official said. The PA believes Hezbollah is seeking to expand attacks against Israelis from Gaza to the West Bank as a way to distract Israel’s ongoing Gaza operations.

Headline: Israeli Government Now Probing Lebanon Terror Tunnels Threat

Israel’s Ministry of Defense is investing millions of shekels in research programs designed to locate tunnels from Lebanon into Israel. “There is a lot of talk about it and concern,” according to one anonymous source who spoke with Israel’s Channel 2 News on Monday. Since the IDF’s discovery and detonation of dozens of terror tunnels dug by Hamas in Gaza beneath Israeli territory during the course of Operation Protective Edge, jittery Israelis are wondering if their hostile neighbors to the north, across the border in southern Lebanon, might be planning the same tactic. The issue first came to the public’s attention during the 2006 war against Hezbollah, when the Shi’ite terrorists popped out of well-concealed, planned and equipped tunnels to attack IDF soldiers – often with lethal results. A renewed public awareness of the issue emerged when residents of Kibbutz Gesher HaZiv and Kiryat Shmona reported that they heard muffled voices beneath their homes and suspected that tunnels were being dug under their feet, not unlike similar reports from Gaza-area residents. Last week, Kiryat Shmona Mayor Nissim Malka asked Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon to investigate the issue when the fighting in the south ebbs. Residents “have complained of hearing noises coming from under the ground. I have heard these complaints several times, but yesterday, when I came back from a tour of the Gaza border communities, I understood,” Malka wrote. “If this is what they did in the south, I am certain [Hezbollah leader Hassan] Nasrallah is not sitting idly and giving out candy,” he said.

Headline: Israel fears terror spillover from Gaza to West Bank

A senior Fatah official tacitly threatened the lives of Israelis travelling through the West Bank, also warning Palestinian merchants to rid their shops of “occupation” products or have them smashed. Speaking at a rally in Nablus organized by Fatah — in solidarity with Gaza — Monday evening, Fatah Central Committee member Jamal Muheisen warned Israel “not to forget that its settlers wander the streets among us and are an easy target for [Fatah’s] al-Aqsa Brigades in the West Bank,” the movement’s official website and Facebook page reported. Muheisen’s comments came amid a chain of terror attacks in Jerusalem and the West Bank, apparently carried out by lone-wolf assailants.

Headline: Italy expels imam accused of violent antisemitic comments
*****On the August 4th post, we shared a video titled “ Sheik Abd Al-Barr Al-Rawdhi Al-Rahma Mosque Italy Friday Sermon at Italian Mosque: Kill the Jews to the Very Last One “ Italy expelled a Moroccan imam accused of making violent antisemitic comments during a sermon at a mosque near Venice, the interior ministry said on Tuesday. Raoudi Albdelbar, an imam from San Dona di Piave near Venice, was accused of creating a serious disturbance to public order, threatening national security and promoting religious discrimination, the ministry said in a statement. “It is unacceptable for a sermon to be delivered that is clearly antisemitic in character, with explicit incitements to violence and religious hatred,” Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said in the statement. The ministry gave no details of the sermon and did not quote the remarks directly. According to Italian daily Libero, the incident occurred at the end of July. It quoted a video published by MEMRI, a Washington-based media monitoring group considered close to Israel, in which Albdelbar is reported to have said: “Oh Allah, count them one by one and kill them to the very last one.”

Headline:Gaza op spurs Italian call for ‘Nuremberg for Israel’ trial

An online petition posted recently by hundreds of Italians during Israel’s operation in Gaza calls for creation of “an international tribunal,” in which the State of Israel and its people will be put on trial for the “slow genocide of the entire [Palestinian] people.” Signed by 525 Italians, most of them academics, the petition does not target just Israel Defense Forces’ commanders or the government of Benjamin Netanyahu: The signatories want “the whole State of Israel” and its “racist society” to appear in an international court, in a Nuremberg-like trial, for war crimes. And not just due to Operation Protective Edge, but because of events in “the past, the present and the foreseeable future.”

Headline: Jordan Pushes for UN Security Council Action for ‘Lasting Truce’

Jordan has presented a new resolution on the Gaza crisis to the UN Security Council and hopes for action on the measure in the coming days, its ambassador said Tuesday.

The draft resolution backed by Arab countries calls for a lasting ceasefire between Hamas and Israel, as well as an international effort to rebuild Gaza after four weeks of fighting killed at least 1,867 Palestinians, at least half of them terrorists, and 67 Israelis. “We are in consultation with all the Council members and hope that in the next day or two we can come up with a product,” Jordanian Ambassador Dina Kawar said. The latest initiative came as a 72-hour truce appeared to be holding and the two sides agreed to send envoys to Cairo for peace talks. “We are very happy with the ceasefire and with the efforts that the Egyptians and the Americans have made,” said Kawar, who stressed the urgent need for a Gaza reconstruction plan.

Headline:  UN backs Lebanon’s military action in Arsal

A temporary cease-fire in Arsal was shattered late Tuesday night after two Army posts on hills overlooking the Bekaa town came under fire by militants, putting the truce attempts in jeopardy, security sources said. As The Daily Star went to press, clashes raged in the border town after militants targeted the Army posts. Soldiers opened fire on routes used by the gunmen to access the embattled town, the sources said. The Lebanese Army agreed to a 24-hour humanitarian cease-fire to allow the evacuation of wounded civilians from Arsal and support ongoing efforts to release kidnapped soldiers held by Islamist militants. The cease-fire, which lasted nearly three hours, allowed Lebanese Red Cross ambulances to enter the town and transport wounded civilians to nearby hospitals, sources in Arsal told The Daily Star. The truce, which followed four days of fierce fighting between the Army and Islamist militants, came as Saudi King Abdullah pledged to speed up the delivery of military assistance to the Lebanese Army under a Saudi-sponsored deal with France, hours after Army chief Gen. Jean Kahwagi urged Paris to quickly deliver the weapons.

Clashes erupted in Tripoli Tuesday as Lebanese security forces Tuesday remained on full alert across the country in anticipation of a backlash against the Army’s five-day operation to rid Arsal of militants. Tripoli was paralyzed by clashes that persisted throughout the day, prompting the Army to withdraw its forces from the northern neighborhood of Bab al-Tabbaneh. A military statement said a bus carrying soldiers from the Tripoli neighborhood of Malouleh came under gunfire from armed gunmen, leaving seven soldiers wounded. A security source told The Daily Star that one soldier was in critical condition after the 6 a.m. attack. Prior to the incident, gunmen tossed stun grenades, stones and Molotov cocktails at Lebanese Army positions between midnight and 3 a.m., according to the source.

Headline:  Sunni insurgents attack YPG and pro-Assad forces in Syria’s Hasakah

Clashes broke out on Tuesday between the Kurdish forces of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) and fighters from Ahrar Geweran in the Arab-majority neighbourhood of Geweran in Hasakah city, northeast of Syria. Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, civil activist Hozan Salim reported that the clashes erupted between the two sides in the afternoon on Tuesday, “following an attempt by the YPG fighters (linked to the Democratic Union Party ‘PYD’) to break into the neighbourhood of Geweran”. “Ahrar Geweran fighters targeted Hasakah city center with six mortar shells, one of which landed on Nouri Pharmacy behind Palestine Street, the second dropped on the police station of the city, and the third on Ramses Hotel, while the fourth shell landed on the headquarters of the Baath Arab Socialist Party branch in central Hasakah,” Salim reported. “Another shell hit a regime-held military barrack, and the other near the Great Mosque in the city center, without recording casualties,” the source added. On the other hand, the pro-regime military forces, who are stationed at al-Hasakah governorate building, pounded the neighbourhood of Geweran with several mortar shells, while mass displacement among civilians was reported, as many were seen heading to the city’s outskirts escaping mortar fire.

Headline: Understanding Syria’s four-front war

Syria’s civil conflict has evolved into a four-front war involving a fight between Islamic State and Damascus, between IS and mainstream rebels, another between the rebels and Assad – and finally one between IS and Syria’s Kurdish militias. As the world media has been preoccupied with the Gaza conflict, Syria has just had the bloodiest week of its civil war. Some 1,700 were killed in seven days, with a renewed push from Islamic State (IS) accounting for much of the violence.

Headline:   Ukraine fighting reaches rebel-held Donetsk

Pro-Russian separatists opened fire on unarmed Ukrainian soldiers on Tuesday as they crossed back into Ukraine from Russia where they had taken shelter from fighting, Kiev defense officials said. Ukraine acknowledged on Monday that 311 soldiers and border guards had been forced by fighting with separatists to cross into Russia. It said they had destroyed their weapons before crossing the border, but the rebels said they had left them behind, enabling separatists to seize them. “Today at about 6 a.m. (separatist) fighters treacherously fired on a column in which there were 195 unarmed Ukrainian troops returning from the Russian Federation,” Andriy Lysenko, a spokesman for the national defense council, told Interfax news agency. He had no immediate word on casualties. Government troops have been battling the rebels since April in a war in the Russian-speaking east in which the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights says more than 1,100 people including government forces, rebels and civilians have died.

Russia has again bolstered its troops presence on its frontier with Ukraine’s east, triggering concerns of cross-border fire or a possible intervention in support of pro-Moscow rebels increasingly besieged by Ukrainian government forces. The spike in troop and military hardware levels has been confirmed by both NATO and US military officials. “In early August, Russia significantly increased the number of troops in the vicinity of the Russian border.  Our current assessment is that around 20,000 troops are now in the area.  This troop presence includes tanks, infantry, artillery, air defense systems, as well as logistics troops, special forces, and various aircraft,” a NATO official said in a written statement. A spokesman for Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council, Andriy Lysenko, said Tuesday that Russia has deployed 45,000 troops to the border – along with a large number of tanks, artillery, multiple rocket launchers and aircraft. He also said that Russian forces fired artillery and Grad rockets at Ukrainian positions across the border for several hours on Monday.

A man dressed in an Afghan army uniform opened fire Tuesday on NATO troops at a military base, killing a U.S. two-star general and wounding some 15 people, among them a German brigadier general and a number of Americans troops, authorities said. The attack at Camp Qargha, a base west of the capital, Kabul, killed who is believed to be the highest-ranking U.S. officer to die in the nearly 13-year war and comes as foreign troops prepare to withdraw by the year’s end. While details remained murky about what sparked the attack, it showed the challenges still remaining in Afghanistan, a nation that’s known three decades of war without end.

#1: Multiple Western soldiers were killed Tuesday after a shooting at a military academy near Afghanistan’s capital, officials said. A spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force confirmed “fatalities’ after “a shooting incident involving ISAF and Afghan troops,” but could not confirm the number of victims or their nationalities. The shooting happened at Camp Qargha, which is located west of Kabul, the ISAF spokesman said. The UK’s Ministry of Defence is investigating reports of an Afghan soldier opening fire at a British-run military academy near Kabul. The BBC’s Afghanistan correspondent David Loyn said he understands that an argument took place late morning or lunchtime between Afghans and an armed Afghan soldier, who opened fire. At least four foreign soldiers were reportedly killed when an Afghan soldier fired on them in a military center in Kabul on Tuesday, a source said.

#2: A NATO helicopter strike targeting missile-launching Taliban militants killed four civilians in western Afghanistan, an Afghan official said on Tuesday. NATO said they were investigating the attack. Headline:   Rebel no-show at South Sudan talks in Ethiopia

A militia hunting down members of a specific ethnic group targeted and killed at least six South Sudanese aid workers over two days during a new bout of violence close to the South Sudan-Sudan border, the U.N. said Tuesday. Two of the victims were murdered in the town of Bunj on Tuesday while another three died in an ambush, the U.N. said. A sixth aid worker was killed Monday and a seventh is missing and presumed dead, the U.N. said. It condemned “in the strongest terms” the Upper Nile state killings by the Mabanese Defense Forces. Ethnically targeted attacks have been a hallmark of the violence coursing through South Sudan since December. All of the murdered aid workers belong to the Nuer ethnic group, the same group that former vice president and current rebel leader Riek Machar belongs to.

Headline:   United States to sell Tunisia 12 Black Hawks to aid militant fight

Tunisia has supplied a disproportionate number of fighters to the Islamist cause in Iraq and Syria. At least 12,000 foreigners have joined Islamist groups in Syria to fight against the government of President Bashar al-Assad, and as many as 3,000 of them are Tunisians, the Soufan Group, a New York-based organization that conducts security analysis, said in a report released in June. The great majority of the foreign fighters in Syria are from Arab countries — only a fifth come from Western countries — and most have now joined the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, an extremist Islamist group, the report says. Eventually, Tunisian security officials fear, he will return to Tunisia determined to pursue the same goals there that he fought for in Syria and Iraq as a member of ISIS.

Headline:    Algeria ‘refused’ military intervention in Libya

Algeria has rejected a request to intervene militarily in neighboring Libya to restore stability to the violence-wracked country, an Algerian diplomatic source said Monday. “Former Libyan lawmakers and officials had visited Algeria in late June and asked for an Algerian military intervention to impose legitimacy in the capital Tripoli and repel warring militias,” the source told Anadolu Agency. According to the source, the proposal was backed by the Arab League, the United States, Egypt and France. “But senior Algerian officials told the Libyan envoys that Algeria refuses to militarily intervene outside its borders even under international mandate,” the source said. Meanwhile, the source said that Egypt awaits an Algerian response to a proposal to provide military support to Libyan forces. “Algeria has not yet responded to the Egyptian proposal, which is backed by the U.S. and France,” the source added. There was no comment from Egypt or Algeria on the report.

Headline: Congress Losing Patience With Turkey’s Erdogan

In a letter penned by Turkish Parliament Foreign Affairs Commission head Volkan Bozkır and sent on Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s behalf, responded to a letter by co-chairs of Turkish Caucasus in the US Congress. In a sharply worded letter, Democrats and Republicans who’ve led House efforts to advance US-Turkish relations warned Erdoğan last week about what they considered to be his anti-Semitic comments. They told him he risked damaging ties between the US and Turkey. The Turkish letter described the US as an “ally and partner” and said Washington’s “silence and ineffectiveness” in the face of Israel’s “state terrorism” in Gaza is “disappointing.” The letter said that countries, particularly referring to the US, which consider themselves as the leaders of the free and civilized world have remained largely silent against the “massacres and inhumane actions” and even defended and encouraged Israel under the “right to self-defense.” The letter said trying to find a solution to the Palestinian issue together is important for Turkish-American relations, adding that biased approach to the conflict will increase insecurity and instability and will damage not only Turkey but also the US.

Headline:   Azerbaijan, Armenia Accuse Each Other Of Escalating Tensions

The recent sharp aggravation of tensions on the contact line of Armenian and Azerbaijani troops by the Armenian armed forces haven’t been addressed properly by the international organizations. Only the OSCE Minsk group, which is involved in the settlement process of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, has voiced concern over the recent escalation of tensions- that is only thing this organization could do. Despite this body mediates on the negotiation process to bring peace to the relations between Armenia and Azerbaijan, it achieved no breakthrough so far. Armenia’s provocative acts on the contact line put the peace on the South Caucasus in danger. By increasing tensions on the frontline, Armenia aims to provoke Azerbaijan into war and hamper the settlement of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict which emerged in 1988 over Yerevan’s territorial claims against Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani officials urged the international organization to take decisive measures against Armenia which has kept Azerbaijan’s territories under occupation over the last 20 years.

Headline:  Ebola outbreak could be much worse than thought

Headline: Saudi Arabia suspects case of Ebola infection

The worst outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in history could actually be much worse than the official death toll reflects. Already, the World Health Organization says 887 people have died, but a top doctor working at the heart of the outbreak in West Africa says many cases are going unreported. The senior doctor, who works for a leading medical organization in Liberia, explained to CBS News’ Debora Patta that what has helped set this outbreak apart from previous ones is the virus’ spread in urban areas. One of the epicenters of the disease is the Liberian capital of Monrovia, home to about a million people, or almost a quarter of the country’s population. The doctor, who spoke to CBS News on condition of confidentiality, said the disease is spinning out of control in Africa partly because it is extremely difficult to contain it in a sprawling, congested city center. Meanwhile, the second American missionary infected with the virus was on her way back to the U.S. aboard a private jet Tuesday morning. Nancy Writebol was expected to reach the isolation unit at the Emory University Hospital later in the day. Her colleague, Dr. Kent Brantly, is already there. Both have been given an experimental serum to try and treat the disease, and hopes have been expressed over limited improvements in their condition. Also, officials at a hospital in New York city said a man admitted to the facility Monday morning showing symptoms commonly associated with Ebola likely does not have the disease. He had traveled recently to West Africa, but a senior doctor at Mt. Sinai hospital told reporters the “odds are” his ailment is not linked to the deadly virus.

Headline: North Carolina restaurant offers a 15 percent discount to pray in public

A few weeks ago the Dublin Girls had gathered inside the local mall for an evening power walk. They formed a small circle and as they had done many times before, they bowed their heads to petition the Almighty. But before one of the runners could say, “Lord Jesus,” she was interrupted by a mall cop barreling down a corridor. “The security guard came running toward us and said, ‘You are not allowed to pray at the mall. That’s against the policy,’” Tammy told me. The ladies were aghast. “I told him we’ve been praying since last November and no one said anything about it,” she said. “We’ve never had any problems.” The security guard told her they’d had a problem with a previous religious group trying to proselytize shoppers. But Tammy said they weren’t trying to convert anybody – they were just trying to pray. And it’s not like they were having a “Holy Ghost Shoutin’ Prayer.” “You can’t hear us unless you are in the circle,” she said. The ladies thought the security guard was simply mistaken so they asked him to call the mall manager. It turns out – the security guard was not mistaken. “The mall manager verified that prayer is not allowed at the mall because this is private property,” she said. They won’t even allow patrons to ask God to bless General Tso’s chicken at the food court’s Chong Wah Express. Meanwhile, in North Carolina A Winston-Salem restaurant is giving customers a 15 percent discount if they pray in public. Mary’s Gourmet Diner in Winston-Salem gives the discount for anyone who takes the time to appreciate their food before digging in. Although the restaurant has been offering the special for four years, a recent Facebook post featuring a receipt with the discount has gone viral, highlighting the practice.

Headline:   Boko Haram Attacks Five Northern Nigerian Churches

Boko Haram militants have attacked five more churches in northern Nigeria. The Islamic extremist group attacked churches in the Hawal Local Government Area with bombs on July 30. While the churches were destroyed, there were no knowns deaths in the incident.  This attack was predecessed by another on July 29 when 13 people died in Yobe state. Suicide bombers entered two mosques for the attack, injuring many more.  Boko Haram continues to defy the laws of the government and resist Nigerian law enforcement. Nigerian President has faced criticism from Nigerians as well as world leaders for failing to curb Boko Haram’s violence.  Christian Solidarity Worldwide Chief Executive Mervyn Thomas said, “Boko Haram continues to commit war crimes by wilfully destroying churches…Moreover, the sect has illustrated once again its disregard for every religion and for the sanctity of human life, not only by targeting the innocent as they pray, but also by indoctrinating vulnerable girls for use as disposable commodities to fulfil its murderous purposes.”  “Nigerians must put aside all religious, political and other divisions and unite in the national interest to overcome this destructive terrorist sect as a matter of urgency.”

Headline:  Fresh sectarian clashes erupt in Egypt’s Minya

A fresh wave of sectarian-inspired clashes have broken out in the Egyptian city of Minya, local media reported on Tuesday. Violence in the religiously mixed city in Upper Egypt, some 200km south of Cairo, reportedly spread from the nearby Yaacoub village following a dispute. Around a dozen people have been arrested, various news agencies said. According to privately owned ONA news agency, the local Muslim population took to the streets and pelted Christian houses with Molotov cocktails after hearing that the villages Coptic residents were planning on building a new church. Local Coptic sources told ONA that the situation was now stable and that the community would still seek to build the church after it applied for the proper authorisation and received the adequate paperwork. The issue of church building has long been contentious with Copts requiring presidential permission to build new churches, restriction the Christian community has long tried to have lifted.

A hurricane and a tropical storm are heading west across the Pacific Ocean toward the tourist haven of Hawaii and the U.S. National Hurricane Center said parts of the islands may need to post watches later on Tuesday. Hurricane Iselle was about 1,055 miles (1,700 km) east-southeast of Hawaii, moving west at 9 miles per hour (15 km per hour) with maximum sustained winds of 125 mph (200 kph), the National Hurricane Center said. “Watches may be required for portions of the islands by later today or early Wednesday,” the Miami-based hurricane center said in an advisory. The hurricane was expected to turn west-northwest later on Tuesday and Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center said, but was forecast to weaken over the next 48 hours. Further east over the Pacific, Tropical Storm Julio was about 1,145 miles (1,845 km) from Baja California in Mexico and also expected to continue moving west-northwest through Thursday, the NHC said.
