RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) – U.S. President Barack Obama is meeting Palestinian officials on the second day of his Mideast tour to emphasize the importance of reaching an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal, a message underscored Thursday when Palestinian militants in Gaza launched rockets into southern Israel. After a visit to Israel’s national museum – where he inspected the Dead Sea Scrolls, which highlight the Jewish people’s ancient connection to the land that is now Israel – Obama headed to the West Bank to tell the Palestinians that the creation of a Palestinian state remains a priority for his administration.
Obama needs to read Joel 3:2 “I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land” (Joel 3:2).
The Palestinians want a state in the West Bank, Gaza and east Jerusalem – territories Israel captured in the 1967 war – but are ready for minor adjustments to accommodate some settlements closest to Israel. Since 1967, Israel has built dozens of settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem that are now home to 560,000 Israelis – an increase of 60,000 since Obama became president four years ago.

President Obama speach today is again fulfilling the above prophecy.
Since then, we have built a friendship that advances our shared interests. Together, we share a commitment to security for our citizens and the stability of the Middle East and North Africa. Together, we share a focus on advancing economic growth around the globe, and strengthening the middle class within our countries. Together, we share a stake in the success of democracy.
I see the same spirit in the young people here today. And given the ties between our countries, I believe your future is bound to ours. So I’d like to focus on how we can work together to make progress in three areas that will define our times: security, peace, and prosperity.
So that is what I think about when Israel is faced with these challenges – that sense of an Israel that is surrounded by many in this region who reject it, and many in the world who refuse to accept it. That is why the security of the Jewish people in Israel is so important – because it can never be taken for granted.
The question, then, is what kind of future Israel will look forward to. And that brings me to the subject of peace.
First, peace is necessary. Indeed, it is the only path to true security. You can be the generation that permanently secures the Zionist dream, or you can face a growing challenge to its future. Given the demographics west of the Jordan River, the only way for Israel to endure and thrive as a Jewish and democratic state is through the realization of an independent and viable Palestine. Given the frustration in the international community, Israel must reverse an undertow of isolation.
This truth is more pronounced given the changes sweeping the Arab World. I recognize that with the uncertainty in the region – people in the streets, changes in leadership, the rise of non-secular parties in politics –it is tempting to turn inward. But this is precisely the time to respond to the wave of revolution with a resolve for peace. As more governments respond to popular will, the days when Israel could seek peace with a handful of autocratic leaders are over. Peace must be made among peoples, not just governments. No one step can change overnight what lies in the hearts and minds of millions. But progress with the Palestinians is a powerful way to begin, while sidelining extremists who thrive on conflict and division.
And there is no question that the only path to peace is through negotiation.
Which leads to my third point: peace is possible. I know it doesn’t seem that way. There will always be a reason to avoid risk, and there’s a cost for failure. There will always be extremists who provide an excuse to not act. And there is something exhausting about endless talks about talks; the daily controversies, and grinding status quo.
Meanwhile, Palestinians must recognize that Israel will be a Jewish state, and that Israelis have the right to insist upon their security. Israelis must recognize that continued settlement activity is counterproductive to the cause of peace, and that an independent Palestine must be viable– that real borders will have to be drawn. I’ve suggested principles on territory and security that I believe can be the basis for talks. But for the moment, put aside the plans and process. I ask you, instead, to think about what can be done to build trust between people

On Friday, March 16th, 2012, President Barack Obama signed an executive order that asserts his authority to take over all food resources in the nation so long as it is done “to promote the national defense under both emergency and non-emergency conditions.” Can that qualifying phrase be any more ambiguous? Obama has claimed this authority for himself and all future Presidents based on the fact that the President is “Commander in Chief” of the U.S. military. Essentially, this means that should the President ever deem it a matter of national defense, the U.S. government can now forcibly claim control of all your privately held crops, seeds, farm equipment, and livestock.

Headline: NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) – Cyprus has four days to agree on a new plan to raise funds to avoid bankruptcy after the European Central Bank warned that it would pull the plug on the country’s banks at the start of next week if no bailout deal is agreed. Banks, which have been closed since last Friday, have been ordered shut until Tuesday to prevent a run. In central Nicosia, lines of angry people formed at some ATMs of branches of Laiki Bank, the country’s heavily indebted second-largest lender.

Headline: Will the EU Sink Cyprus?
The specter of default has reached the shores of Cyprus, the latest country in the Eurozone to require an EU bailout in order to stay afloat. The island nation in the eastern Mediterranean has one of the smallest economies in the Eurozone, but, because of close financial ties to Greece, its finances have been on the ropes since the Greek debt crisis began.
Now it’s time to pay the piper — and Cypriots are shocked at the price to be exacted by the international banking cartel. In a deal hammered out in Brussels last week and announced by Cyprus’ president Nicos Anastasiades, the government was planning to confiscate 10 percent of all savings in bank accounts holding more than 100,000 euros, and 6.75 percent of all savings from accounts having less than that amount. It was necessary, Anastasiades assured Cypriots, in order to prevent the “catastrophic scenario of disorderly bankruptcy.” As compensation, accountholders in Cyprus’ banks are being issued shares supposedly equivalent in value to the money being confiscated.
But the people of Cyprus aren’t buying it. When the measure was announced, throngs of shocked Cypriots lined up at banks and ATMs to withdraw their money, only to have the banks close their doors and switch off their ATMs. One angry Cypriot threatened to break into a bank with his bulldozer. As one British expatriate in Cyprus, whose retirement savings are about to be looted, told the BBC, “This is robbery and we must get the EU to stop this. We retire and bring our savings to a bank in Cyprus and they can just take our money away without permission and then say we have shares in a bankrupt bank.”

It sounds like an “Armageddon” sequel, set on Mars instead of Earth: A supermassive doomsday comet is heading toward the planet in 2014, and there’s nothing anyone can do about it. Not even Bruce Willis. The comet presents a good-news, bad-news situation for the Red Planet, and for us earthlings as well. NASA says Comet 2013 A1, also known as Comet Siding Spring, is almost certain to miss Mars on Oct. 19, 2014. However, there’s still a chance — a less than a 1-in-600 chance — that Mars could be hit, due to the remaining uncertainty about the comet’s path. That uncertainty is likely to be cleared up over the next few months, eventually resulting in an all-clear.
