Turkey to send more troops to Syria even as Moscow talks continue
Turkey will deploy more troops to Syria’s Idlib region and retaliate against attacks by government forces there, even as Ankara continues to discuss the situation with Moscow, Turkish Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin said on Tuesday. A Turkish delegation met Russian counterparts for a second day of talks in Moscow on Tuesday, with no apparent agreement on Idlib, where a push in recent weeks by Russian-backed Syrian government forces has killed several Turkish troops and led to mass displacement of civilians.

Port hit by barrage of rocket fire in Libyan capital
A port in the capital of war-torn Libya was hit by a barrage of rocket fire on Tuesday, witnesses said. The Tripoli port, used by merchant shipping and the navy, was cordoned off by security forces and there were no immediate reports of casualties. “The rockets flew over our heads and hit one of the quays at the Al-Shaab port,” a resident of the central district of Dahra told AFP. “So far there have been more than 15 rockets and the bombardment is ongoing.” A column of smoke rising from the port area was visible from across Tripoli, the target of a months-long operation by eastern military commander Khalifa Hifter to oust the U.N.-recognized unity government. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the strikes.

ISIS has double the number of soldiers it had when it began capturing territory in Iraq and Syria in 2014 and is poised for a comeback, a Kurdish leader has warned. Masrour Barzani, prime minister of the autonomous region of Iraqi Kurdistan, issued the stark warning amid moves by President Trump to withdraw US troops from the region after years of fighting. While ISIS has lost all of its territory and much of its leadership, Barzani believes the terror group still has 20,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria and is trying to recruit more.

Ukraine conflict: Deadly flare-up on eastern front line
Ukraine says its troops on the eastern front line have come under heavy shelling during a rebel attack, with one soldier killed and four wounded. It says four rebel soldiers were killed and six injured. Russian-backed rebels say Ukrainian forces tried to break through their lines and got caught in a minefield, with two killed and three wounded. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky said the rebel “provocation” would not derail Kyiv’s course to achieve peace. The violence puts new pressure on a shaky ceasefire deal. Tuesday’s clash, now said to be over, took place near Zolote, a front-line village in the Luhansk region of Donbas.

Coronavirus could impact 5 million companies worldwide, new research shows
The new coronavirus outbreak and subsequent shutdown of huge swathes of China could impact more than 5 million businesses worldwide, according to a new study. A special briefing issued by global data analytics firm Dun & Bradstreet analyzed the Chinese provinces most impacted by the virus, and found they are intricately linked to the global business network. The affected areas with 100 or more confirmed cases as of February 5 are home to more than 90% of all active businesses in China, according to the report, and around 49,000 businesses in these regions are branches and subsidiaries of foreign companies. Almost half (49%) of the companies with subsidiaries in impacted regions are headquartered in Hong Kong, while the U.S. accounts for 19%, Japan 12% and Germany 5%.

Christian Pastor Faces Criminal Investigation For Booklet Opposing Homosexuality
The leader of a confessional Lutheran denomination in Finland was questioned by the police on 12 February about his responsibility in the distribution of “Male and Female He Created Them”, a 24-page booklet published back in 2004. Juhana Pohjola, Dean of the Evangelical Lutheran Mission Diocese of Finland and head of the group of churches’ publishing house, responded to police questions for five hours, as a part of a preliminary investigation of a case that also involves the author of the booklet, member of Parliament Päivi Räsänen. At the tactful and thorough interrogation, I said that I am, as the editor-in-chief, responsible for the publication and distribution of the booklet. I denied, however, being guilty of the crime of ethnic agitation” Pohjola said after the meeting with the police. “In my view, Mrs Räsänen’s text is not defamatory or insulting to homosexuals. In my answers, I showed that the booklet teaches in line with Christian anthropology that every person is precious as being created in the image of God, regardless of sexual orientation”, he added. “This does not mean, however, that people are not responsible before God for their way of life or moral choices. The homosexual lifestyle is contrary to God’s order of creation and a transgression against His will.

Huge Locust Outbreak in East Africa Reaches South Sudan
The worst locust outbreak that parts of East Africa have seen in 70 years has reached South Sudan, a country where roughly half the population already faces hunger after years of civil war, officials announced Tuesday. Around 2,000 locusts were spotted inside the country, Agriculture Minister Onyoti Adigo told reporters. Authorities will try to control the outbreak, he added. The locusts have been seen in Eastern Equatoria state near the borders with Ethiopia, Kenya and Uganda. All have been affected by the outbreak that has been influenced by the changing climate in the region. The situation in those three countries “remains extremely alarming,” the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization said in its latest Locust Watch update Monday. Locusts also have reached Sudan, Eritrea, Tanzania and more recently Uganda.

Incessant heavy rains continued to drench portions of the southern U.S., causing several rivers and dams to overflow. Unprecedented flooding in Mississippi put the state under a state of emergency on February 15, 2020, as Pearl River reached its third-highest level on record at 11.2 m (36.7 feet). Meanwhile, a landslide in Tennessee destroyed several houses as rains in the area have been four times above normal for February. In Mississippi, among the worst-affected areas is Jackson, where the Pearl River surpassed Major Flood stage and reached 11.2 m (36.7 feet) on Monday, February 17– the state’s third-highest level ever. Prior to this, the government of the state declared a state of emergency on Saturday, February 15. “This is a historic, unprecedented flood,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “With projections showing the potential of this being the third-worst flood in our state’s history, I’ve declared a state of emergency to deploy the necessary resources to take care of all Mississippians impacted.”
