Headline: Israel targets Palestinian militants in rare Gaza airstrike
Headline:Hamas threatens Israel following airstrike
The Israeli military carried out a rare airstrike in Gaza on Wednesday, targeting a group of Palestinian militants placing explosives along the border and killing one of them, Israeli and Palestinian officials said. The Israeli military said its aircraft located the group along Gaza’s northern border with Israel as they were planning to detonate an explosive device against Israeli troops on the other side. “Forces guarding the border with Gaza face a growing threat from hostile terror groups attempting to destabilize the situation on the ground,” said Lt. Col. Peter Lerner, a military spokesman. The Palestinian Health Ministry said a 31-year-old man was killed in the strike and three others were wounded. The Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, a militant group affiliated with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah group, later identified the deceased as a member, saying he was targeted while planting explosives. In a separate statement, Salah Bardawil, an official from Gaza’s ruling Islamic Hamas movement, said Israel was “playing with fire” in the airstrike. He did not elaborate. The airstrike marked a rare flare-up along the Gaza border, which has remained largely calm since a devastating 50-day summer war in 2014.

Headline: IDF readying itself for threat from ISIS in the Sinai
A tense kind of quiet has characterized the Israel-Egypt border for the past year. The desert area has seen the threat of the Islamic State group grow in that time, leading the IDF to realize that it could end up affecting Israel directly – specifically its southern towns. The IDF has taken this danger to heart, and has been preparing. The IDF Southern Command has changed its war plans three times, updating them to fit the expected threat. For instance, troops are focusing more on fighting in urban areas and protecting southern Israeli agricultural farms, which may be vulnerable to infiltration by ISIS elements. The number of IDF troops along the border has been greatly reinforced as well: Tanks and artillery batteries have been spread throughout the area, and joint army-air force drills are being conducted. One of the main visible changes is the vehicles infantry forces are using: The Jeeps and humvees have been reinforced, and equipped with rooftop machine guns.

Headline: Israel Bars Doors to Swedish Foreign Minister Following More Incendiary Anti-Israel Remarks
Following an accusation by Swedish Foreign Minister Margot Wallström alleging that Israel carries out “extrajudicial executions” of Palestinian terrorists, her Israeli counterpart Tzipi Hotovely said that Israel is “closing its doors to official visits from Sweden.” In remarks made to a cadets’ course for future Israeli diplomats, Deputy Foreign Minister Hotovely said that Wallström is “de facto supporting” terrorism with her recent incendiary remarks. On Tuesday, Wallström called for an investigation into alleged extrajudicial killings of Palestinian attackers, referring to those Palestinians who are killed while attempting to carry out terror attacks against Israelis and Jews. Wallström told lawmakers, “It is vital that there are thorough, credible investigations into these deaths in order to clarify and bring about possible accountability.” Hotovely called the remark “a terrible combination of foolishness and diplomatic stupidity.” Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded the same day with a statement strongly condemning Wallström’s comments, calling them “delusional.” “In her irresponsible and delusional statements, the Swedish foreign minister provides tailwind to terror, and thus encourages violence,” the Foreign Ministry said.

Headline: Obama, Jordan’s King Abdullah hold meeting at Andrews AFB
In the new volume of its weekly newspaper, Al-Nabah, released on Tuesday, ISIS directly threatened Jordan’s king Abdullah II, saying that: “Jordan’s apostate ruler will have natural gas only with the permission of Amir al-Mu’minin [ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi].” On January 8, the ISIS branch in Egypt, Sinai Province, attacked the El-Arish pipeline to Jordan, blowing up the pipeline which carries gas from Egypt to the Hashemite Kingdom. Since the Egyptian uprising of 2011, that vital pipeline has witnessed more than 30 attacks by terror organizations.
Following the attack, Sinai Province’s media institute released a statement on Twitter, claiming: “In a blessed operation, Islamic State soldiers attacked the pipeline that supplies natural gas to the apostate Jordanian government from the city of El-Arish. The statement was ended with a promise that “not a single cubic foot of gas will reach the insignificant state of Jordan without the permission of Amir al-Mu’minin,”adding that: “The jihadists will continue attacking the interests of the apostate rulers in the Middle East and their economic facilities, which they ironically use to fight Islam and the Muslims.”

Syria Headline: Syrian troops seize territory from rebels in northwest
Backed by relentless Russian airstrikes, Syrian troops and allied militiamen on Wednesday pushed deeper into a major rebel stronghold in the northwestern province of Latakia, a day after seizing a key rebel-held town in the strategic region overlooking the coast, the government and opposition activists said. The insurgents in the opposition-held area near the Turkish border were collapsing after the town of Salma fell to government loyalists late Tuesday. Salma’s fall marked one of the most significant military victories by the Syrian military since Russia began airstrikes in the country last September to shore up President Bashar Assad’s forces. On Wednesday, government troops seized the villages of Mrouniyah and Marj Kawkah near Salma as they continued their advances in the region, aided by immense Russian firepower. “Whoever controls Salma gains control all those surrounding areas which it overlooks,” said Zakariya Ahmad, an opposition activist in the nearby Idlib province. He said the town fell after 93 days of fighting and daily barrel bombs and airstrikes. He said activists in the region had reported 92 airstrikes believed to be Russian on Salma in the last 24 hours before it was fully seized by government troops. “It was hell on earth,” he said.

Syria Headline: Turkish artillery backs Syria rebel push on ISIS
Syrian rebels operating north of Aleppo backed by the reported help of Turkish artillery fire have gained ground against ISIS along a stretch of territory that Ankara aims to turn into a “safe zone.” Since the weekend, rebel factions in the Marea Operations Room regained four villages near the Turkish border that were seized by ISIS in a December offensive. In their latest victory on Wednesday morning, Free Syrian Army-affiliated groups and Islamist battalions swept into the village of Baghdin following fierce overnight fighting, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Sham Legion announced Wednesday that it had wrested the village of Baghdin on the Syrian-Turkish border from ISIS, in the most recent in a slow series of advances against the group that have reportedly been achieved with Turkish support. “The Sham Legion announces the total liberation of the village of Baghdin in northern Aleppo countryside from ISIS’s Kharijite gangs,” the moderate Islamist coalition said in a post on its Twitter feed, using an insulting Islamic term to refer to its adversary. Over the past four days, insurgent groups in the Marea Operations Room have seized the nearby areas of Qarah Kubri, Qarah Mazraa and Al-Khirbeh, all of which lie to the east of Baghdin. As the rebels fought against transnational group in the pitched battles in the northern Aleppo border region, reports began to emerge that Turkey was pummeling ISIS with artillery fire. The ISIS-affiliated A3maq news agency reported Saturday that Turkish forces where shelling the village of Qarah Kubri with heavy artillery, with the outlet reporting further shelling the following day when opposition forces began their offensive inside the town. Later that Sunday, Islamist battalions marched into Qarah Kubri, while also capturing nearby Al-Khirbeh from ISIS. A pro-Syrian rebel outlet also reported Turkish artillery support for the rebels in the Marea Operations Room over the weekend.

Iraq Headline: Report: US-led coalition bombs ISIS ‘bank’ housing ‘millions of dollars’
An ISIS storage facility housing “millions of dollars” in cash was bombed by US-led coalition forces in the Iraqi city of Mosul, AFP reported Monday. “We estimate in the millions of dollars… from all their illicit stuff: oil, looting, extortion,” a US defense official told AFP on the condition of anonymity. Multiple 2,000 pound bombs hit the storage facility, killing between five and seven civilians in the operation, CNN first reported earlier in the day. The US and its coalition of Western and Arab allies have been increasing their targeting of the terrorist organization’s money making capabilities, including bombing trucks ferrying oil across Syria and Iraq. here’s the most interesting part of the story, which is at the end: The U.S. considers the Mosul strike extremely sensitive, as the building is in an area where civilians are also located, and there was a significant risk of civilian casualties. . . . U.S. commanders had been willing to consider up to 50 civilian casualties from the airstrike due to the importance of the target. But the initial post-attack assessment indicated that perhaps five to seven people were killed. In recent weeks, the U.S. has said it will assess all targets on a case-by-case basis and may be more willing to tolerate civilians casualties for more significant targets.

Iraq Headline: Sunni mosques in east Iraq attacked
At least seven Sunni mosques and dozens of shops in eastern Iraq were firebombed on Tuesday. Ten people were also shot and killed in Muqdadiya, 80km northeast of Baghdad, security and hospital sources said. Witnesses said some of those killed on Tuesday had been shot inside their homes or dragged into the street and executed by gunmen wearing black and camouflage uniforms. Police sources and local residents said the gunmen were patrolling Muqdadiya and warning families through loudspeakers to leave the city or face death. Reuters could not verify these accounts. Two Iraqi journalists were also killed on Tuesday outside Baqouba, Diyala’s provincial capital 65km northeast of Baghdad, according to police, a security official and their network Sharqiya TV. They said the men had been turned back from a checkpoint near Muqdadiya run by a Shiite militia. On their way back to Baqouba, gunmen sprayed their vehicle with automatic gunfire. Earlier in the day, a suicide bomber attacked a police convoy near Baqouba, critically wounding a senior police officer and killing three other members of the security forces, police said.

Headline: Blast in central Istanbul tourist area leaves several killed
Headline: Istanbul suicide bomber registered at refugee agency a week before attack
Terrorism struck in the heart of Istanbul on Tuesday when a suicide bomber, allegedly affiliated with Islamic State, targeted a square with views of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia in the early morning. Ten were killed and at least 15 were wounded in the attack. All 10 victims were foreigners, according to Ankara, which noted the square is popular with tourists. One victim was a Peruvian and, later in the day, Berlin confirmed that nine of the dead were German nationals. Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Numan Kurtulmus said the assailant is believed to have crossed into the country in past weeks from its border with Syria; however, he was not on Turkey’s watch list of suspected terrorists. Tuesday’s attack is the second terrorist strike against Turkey in recent months, after a bombing in Ankara on October 10 killed 102 and wounded hundreds. Russia, which has sanctioned Turkey ever since Ankara shot down a Russian jet in Syrian airspace in November, condemned the attack and said the carnage should remind the world of the need to unite against terrorism. Moscow says it is intervening in the Syrian war on behalf of its nominal president, Bashar Assad, in order to fight terrorist organizations – Islamic State chief among them. And the attacker, who had not yet been identified by the time of this publication, was said by Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to have been a member of Islamic State. “Until we wipe out Daesh, Turkey will continue its fight at home and with coalition forces,” he said in comments broadcasted live on television, using the Arabic acronym for Islamic State.

Headline: Iranian footage shows US sailor apology, arrest in Gulf incident
Within hours of releasing 10 U.S. sailors who apparently had drifted into their territorial waters, the Iranian government was using footage from the incident as a propaganda tool – including images of sailors on their knees with their hands behind their heads and a video showing a sailor apologizing. “It was a mistake. That was our fault. And we apologize for our mistake,” the sailor said, in a brief state TV clip posted on Twitter by a journalist with Iran’s Tasnim News Agency. Secretary of State John Kerry and others have cited the peaceful resolution as a “testament” to diplomacy and the new U.S.-Iran relationship, as they welcome Iran into the “community of nations.” But the various images and clips of the sailors since circulated by Iranian media could prove embarrassing. Images purported to show the sailors with their hands over their heads when they were arrested, and Iranian officials boarding their ships. In the video clip of the apology, a sailor identified as the “commander” is being interviewed about his team’s actions. He apologizes, and also seems to acknowledge they drifted into Iranian territorial waters. In response, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said Wednesday that the department would assess whether the video is authentic. He noted images of prisoners are not supposed to be shown under the terms of the Geneva Convention.

Headline: Nuclear deal to be implemented by Sunday, Iran says
The final implementation of Iran’s nuclear deal with world powers is expected by Sunday, Iranian state media said Wednesday, quoting Deputy Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. A report by the International Atomic Energy Agency, concluding that Iran had fulfilled its obligations under the agreement, will come out on Friday, broadcaster IRIB quoted Araqchi as saying, paving the way for sanctions to end. The IAEA findings would be followed by “reaching the end of the line and the announcement of the implementation during Friday, Saturday and Sunday,” the official IRNA news agency quoted Araqchi as saying. There was no immediate confirmation from the IAEA of Araqchi’s comments about the timing of “Implementation Day” when the deal comes into effect, but US and European officials have recently said it could be just days away.

Headline: IS Claims Attack on Pakistan Consulate in Afghanistan
Officials in eastern Afghanistan said a gun and bomb attack Wednesday near the Pakistani consulate in Jalalabad killed seven security personnel and wounded 10 people, including three civilians. Islamic State militants claimed responsibility for the assault. Afghan police and witnesses said the attack began with several massive explosions near the consulate, which is located near India’s consulate, a hospital and several schools. The provincial police chief, General Fazal Mohammad Sherzad told reporters that three attackers were targeting the Pakistani consulate and planned to enter the facility from an adjacent guest house. But he said security forces surrounded the house and killed them in a two-hour gunfight. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry condemned the attack and said only one consulate official was slightly injured by broken glass. A ministry statement said Pakistan has asked the Afghan government to “thoroughly investigate this incident” and to ensure the safety of Pakistani diplomatic missions and officials in Afghanistan.

Headline: Libya repels ISIS assault on oil terminal
Libyan guards said Monday they repelled a maritime assault by ISIS on Zueitina oil terminal in the north of the country. ISIS tried last week to seize export terminals in the so-called “oil crescent” of northern Libya, killing 56 people in two suicide bombings in Zliten and Ras Lanouf, east of Tripoli. “On Sunday night, the guards intercepted three boats trying to enter the oil port of Zueitina,” Ali al-Hassi, spokesman for the guards protecting oil facilities for Libya’s recognised government. “They opened fire and hit one of the boats. The other two made off but returned a short while later to tow the vessel which had been hit,” he said. “We can say it was ISIS because we’d received information that ISIS would try to enter Zueitina by sea,” the spokesman told AFP. ISIS has been trying for several weeks to push east from its coastal stronghold of Sirte, threatening to seize control of Libya’s oil wealth.

Headline: Bomb near Pakistan polio centre ‘kills 15’
At least 15 people have been killed in a suspected suicide bombing outside a polio vaccination centre in the south-western Pakistani city of Quetta. Many of the casualties are thought to have been police guarding the clinic. Armed guards are routine for polio workers in Pakistan, who have been the target of many deadly attacks by Islamist militants in recent years. Militants oppose polio vaccination, saying it is a Western conspiracy to sterilise Pakistani children. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries where the disease is still endemic. The explosion took place in the morning as polio workers and security staff were reporting for duty before heading out on their vaccination rounds, said Sarfaraz Bugti, a minister in Balochistan province of which Quetta is the capital. Quetta’s deputy commissioner, Dawood Khilji, said the death toll had risen to 15, with 14 police officers and one passer-by confirmed dead. About 20 people were injured.

Headline: Report: S. Korea fires warning shots at North’s drone
South Korea fired warning shots after a North Korean drone briefly entered its territory Wednesday, according to South Korean media. The drone, which was seen flying above a South Korean military observatory post at the border between the two countries, “immediately” returned to North Korea, the South’s Yonhap news agency reported, citing officials. The United Nations Security Council pledged to pursue new sanctions against the North after it claimed that it successfully tested a hydrogen bomb on Jan. 6. On Wednesday, South Korea’s President Park Geun-hye’s urged China, North Korea’s main ally, to “play a necessary role” in the sanctions. The Chinese government has said it strongly opposes the reported test. Park’s televised comments came after Seoul said North Korea sent leaflets across the border describing Park and her government as “mad dogs,” the Associated Press reported. On Tuesday, North Korea said it is ready to detonate hydrogen bombs capable of wiping out the United States “all at once,” Yonhap reported.

Headline: Trans-Pacific Partnership: Serious Rights Concerns
The proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) economic and trade agreement raises numerous human rights concerns despite unprecedented efforts to address labor issues, Human Rights Watch said today in a new Q & A. The TPP’s rights problems should be addressed before the agreement enters into force, Human Rights Watch said. “As the TPP moves toward ratification, policymakers should reflect carefully on how the agreement will affect over 800 million people living in Pacific Rim countries,” said Sarah Margon, Washington Director at Human Rights Watch. “The TPP is a far-reaching agreement whose human rights harms should be addressed now before they are replicated in future trade and economic agreements worldwide.” The agreement should have gone further to protect labor rights, and there are serious concerns with provisions related to the right to health, free expression and privacy online. The agreement’s labor chapter and associated bilateral agreements do not have adequate labor rights safeguards for countries with poor labor rights records, like Vietnam, Malaysia, Mexico, Peru, and Brunei. Another concern raised in the Q & A is that the TPP’s provisions affecting the pharmaceutical industry, which extend monopolistic patent and regulatory protections, will make it more difficult for people to affordably obtain life-saving medicines. In addition, the TPP’s copyright provisions could make it easier for governments to abuse intellectual property rules to stifle online dissent.

The S&P 500 declined 42 points, or 2.21% to 1894, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped 146 points, or 3.12% to 4541. Utilities was the only sector in positive territory, seeing gains of 0.61%. The tech-heavy Nasdaq, which narrowly averted a nine-session losing streak on Tuesday, quickly reverted back to negative territory on Wednesday when it dropped more than 2%, notching a fresh three-month low. Consumer discretionary names were the biggest losers on the session as companies like Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) dropped on no particular news. The e-commerce giant shed nearly 12% year to date after booking gains of 118% last year. The stock was the Nasdaq’s biggest decliner. Headline: Suit filed in Akron federal court to remove ‘In God We Trust’ from currency
A California lawyer has filed a suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio to stop the government from printing money with the phrase “In God We Trust.” The lawsuit, filed on Monday in Akron, names defendants like U.S. Congress, Secretary of the Treasury Jacob J. Lew and Director of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing Leonard R. Olijar. The attorney filing the suit is Michael Newdow, who has long been fighting to have the words “Under God” removed from the Pledge of Allegiance. Newdow, an atheist, also filed a lawsuit in 2009 to prevent references to God from being used in President Barack Obama’s inauguration. Newdow and Westlake attorney Thomas M. Horwitz write in court documents that currency minted or printed with the words “In God We Trust” violations the First Amendment, the Fifth Amendment and the Religious Freedom Restoration Act. “Plaintiffs either specifically do not trust in any ‘G-d’ (with NOT trusting G-d being a basic tenet of their belief systems) or hold G-d’s name so dear and exalted that to inscribe it on a monetary instrument is deemed sinful,” court documents said. Plaintiffs include two Summit County children and their father, who is an atheist. According to court documents, the discussion of “In G-d We Trust” in schools opens the kids up to ridicule.

Headline: Hurricane Pali sets record for being earliest; closest to equator
Chalk up another wacky weather element to this winter’s near-record El Nino churning in the Pacific Ocean. Hurricane Pali just set a record for the earliest hurricane on record in the Central Pacific Ocean, getting the classification on Jan. 11 at 10 p.m. EST as wind speeds hit an estimated 90 mph. It’s over 1,300 miles away from Hawaii and poses no threat to land. According to the Weather Channel, it beats the record more than two weeks, besting Hurricane Ekeka, which reached hurricane status on Jan. 30, 1992 (also during a strong El Nino winter.) Hurricane season doesn’t even officially begin until June 1 in the Pacific, but this storm is managing to hold together due to extremely warm ocean temperatures approaching the mid 80s. But that’s not the only record set by Pali. It’s also the record for southern-most hurricane to live in the Northern/Western Hemisphere (i.e. closest to approach the equator): Why is hitting the equator so difficult for a hurricane? There’s little-to-zero Coriolis Force around the equator which is needed to help the storm spin and maintain strength. No tropical storm or hurricane has ever crossed the equator, but some forecast tracks have Pali getting as close as 2-4 degrees north latitude.
