More than 24 hours after the explosive device set by Hezbollah exploded on Har Dov, Israel’s security establishment believes the current round of blows has ended between the Lebanese organization and the Israel Defense Forces. Security sources told Haaretz on Tuesday that according to Hezbollah’s response to the incident and various signs on the ground, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah seems to be making do with this response to the assassination of Samir Kuntar, which Hezbollah attributes to Israel, and will not be maintaining the tension for much longer. Nevertheless, IDF forces on the Lebanese border and the Golan Heights will remain on high alert for now, to thwart further possible attacks, if it turns out that the intelligence analysis of Hezbollah’s intentions is mistaken. Hezbollah’s media outlets in Lebanon released photos Tuesday of the area of the incident on Har Dov. Taken from some distance away on the Lebanese side of the border, the photos show the scene of the explosion, a damaged bulldozer and a nearby IDF outpost. Hezbollah media outlets extolled the achievement of its fighters, who crossed the border into Israel and set the explosive device in thick fog and despite the IDF’s declared high alert. Some of the reports from Lebanon even claimed that soldiers were injured and that Israel was concealing this fact. The IDF spokesman said no soldiers had been injured in the attack.

Headline: Abbas: Palestinian Authority will not collapse
Palestinian Authority president gives televised speech in Bethlehem, in which he stresses that the PA would be followed by a Palestinian state. President Mahmoud Abbas said on Wednesday that the Palestinian Authority was one of the Palestinians’ achievements and “no one should dream that it would collapse.” In a televised speech from his office in Bethlehem, where he arrived to attend Christmas celebrations of Orthodox Christians, Abbas said that the PA would be followed by a Palestinian state. “We won’t accept any other scenarios,” he said, referring to reports that the Israeli government had recently discussed various scenarios that could emerge in the aftermath of the collapse of the PA. “The Palestinian Authority exists and it is here,” Abbas stressed. “It will be followed by a Palestinian state. The Palestinian Authority is one of our achievements and we won’t give it up.” Over the past few years, Abbas and other senior Palestinian officials had threatened to dissolve the PA and “hand the keys back to Israel.” Abbas’s speech on Wednesday was preceded by rumors that he is planning to resign. On Saturday, unconfirmed reports claimed that Abbas had suffered a stroke and was being treated in a Jordanian hospital. Abbas’s office strongly denied the reports.

Islamic State threatened to destroy Saudi Arabian prisons holding jihadists after Riyadh’s execution of 47 people including 43 convicted al Qaeda militants. The militant group, which has claimed responsibility for attacks in the kingdom and stepped up operations in neighboring Yemen, singled out the al-Ha’ir and Tarfiya prisons where many al Qaeda and Islamic State supporters have been detained. “The Islamic State always seeks to free prisoners, but we calculate that the ending of the issues of prisoners will not happen except with the eradication of the rule of tyrants, and then destroying their prisons and razing them to the ground,” it said in an article posted online on Tuesday. An Islamic State supporter killed himself in a car bomb at a checkpoint outside Ha’ir prison near Riyadh in July. While Islamic State and al Qaeda are rivals who have condemned each other on ideological grounds, they are both united in enmity towards Saudi Arabia, which has declared them terrorist groups and locked up thousands of their supporters.

Bahrain and Sudan joined Saudi Arabia in cutting off relations with Iran, and the United Arab Emirates, a key Iranian trading partner, recalled its ambassador from Tehran, as the fallout from the execution of a prominent Shiite cleric in Saudi Arabia on Saturday heightened sectarian tensions across the Middle East. The implications of the Saudi-Iranian rift extend far beyond their immediate rivalry as competing regional powerhouses and encompass almost all of the wars raging in the Middle East. The current crisis could further complicate efforts to resolve the Syrian war and could strengthen, by default, the Islamic State. Some 1,000 troops from Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states have been deployed to Saudi Arabia. The rebels have launched several missiles at the Saudi southern border and Bahrain on Dec. 30 reported the death of three of its soldiers at the border. Also on Dec. 30, Saudi-led coalition forces in Yemen reported that a Bahraini F-16 fighter jet crashed in southern Saudi Arabia near the Yemen border in Jizan. “The Bahraini air force pilot participating in the coalition managed to escape after his plane crashed in Jizan region on Wednesday morning after a technical malfunction,” a statement by the Arab coalition led by Saudi Arabia and released by the Saudi Press Agency said.

Headline: Egyptian army kills 61 militants in restive Sinai
At least 61 militants were killed and 10 others arrested in military actions over the past two days in the restive North Sinai province, Egypt’s military said Tuesday. In Monday’s actions in North Sinai’s Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah cities, as well as other areas and mountain routes in Middle Sinai, 32 terrorists were eliminated and six suspects arrested, the military said. That adds to the 29 killed and four arrested during actions in the same areas on Sunday, a statement added. During these campaigns , the military also destroyed 80 improvised explosive devices, more than a ton of drugs and a number of machine and sniper guns. The Sinai-based Ansar Bayt al-Maqdis (ABM) militant group, which has changed its name to “Sinai State” and vowed loyalty to the regional Islamic State (IS) militant group, has claimed responsibility for most of the terror attacks in the country.

Syria Headline: Syrian army, rebel fire kills 26 around Damascus
Government and rebel bombardment killed up to 26 civilians and wounded dozens in the Syrian capital and a nearby opposition bastion on Wednesday, state media and an activist group said. Mortar rounds fired from the rebel-held Eastern Ghouta region onto residential areas of Damascus left eight civilians dead and 23 wounded, the official SANA news agency reported. The attack came after the army fired rockets onto the Eastern Ghouta town of Douma earlier in the day, killing six civilians, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a British-based activist group. The group gave a slightly different toll of nine dead and 30 wounded, some critically, in the bombardment of Damascus. Ten other civilians, including a child, were later killed in government airstrikes on the town of Hazzeh and one in Mesraba, east of the capital, the Observatory said.

Syria Headline: Siege threat looms over northern Homs
Syrian regime forces have cut off rebel supply lines south of Hama, threatening to impose a harsh siege on opposition-held territory in the northern Homs area. “Regime forces are working to impose a choking siege on southern Hama countryside and northern Homs countryside,” a media activist told Alaraby Aljadeed in an article published Monday. The activist, who goes by the pseudonym Abu Talib al-Hamawi, explained that in the past week regime troops have pressed a military campaign along a series of villages east of the Hama-Homs M5 highway. “Resistance by opposition factions in northern Homs and southern Hama has been weak because of poor coordination, and a lack of support and heavy weaponry,” he explained. Pro-Damascus outlets have reported over the past two days that Syrian regime forces have swept into villages lying along the Orontes river, which winds its way southeast from Hama.

Iraq Headline: ISIS steps up assault on western Iraqi town after losses
ISIS has stepped up attacks on the western Iraqi town of Haditha, where at least 45 Iraqi security forces and Sunni tribal fighters have been killed in clashes over the past three days and another 30 wounded, according to Iraqi officials. The attacks come after Iraqi forces aided by U.S.-led airstrikes drove ISIS militants out of the city center of Ramadi, the capital of the sprawling Anbar province west of Baghdad. Following that victory a week ago, U.S. officials said the extremist group has lost 40 percent of its territory in Iraq and 20 percent in Syria. Coalition officials briefing journalists on Wednesday described a multi-pronged attack on Haditha beginning early this week. ISIS suicide attackers driving cars loaded with explosives approached the town from three fronts, while other militants fired mortar rounds at the nearby al-Asad air base, home to some 450 foreign coalition forces, none of whom were wounded in the attack.

The recent flare-up of clashes between the Turkish security forces and militants linked with the terrorist Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in urban areas across southeastern Turkey, which with discernible devastation have reduced some residential areas to mere rubble, has put the country onto a list of conflict zones that need to be closely watched in 2016, a report shows. The report written by Jean-Marie Guéhenno from the International Crisis Group and published on Foreign Policy says photographs taken in Turkey’s Southeast have been worrying. The images of the bloody urban battles “capture a dangerous escalation in Turkey’s long conflict with the PKK, a confrontation that has killed more than 30,000 people since 1984,” Guéhenno wrote. Among the reasons that have contributed to the sudden escalation in fighting, according to Guéhenno, is the cooperation between Turkey’s PKK and its Syrian affiliate, the Democratic Union Party (PYD), which has made significant gains against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). “Ankara worries that cross-border Kurdish solidarity will further strengthen demands for a separate state,” he wrote.

American defense officials earlier told NBC News that U.S. Special Operations Forces were involved in a counter-terrorism operation in the Marjah area of Helmand province when they came under attack. A U.S. medevac chopper called in to recover casualties then came under mortar and small-arms fire, the officials added. It was not clear if the helicopter had been hit by enemy fire or whether any casualties were sustained in that landing zone, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, at least 30 militants have been killed and scores of others injured during fierce clashes between members of Daesh Takfiri (ISIS) terrorist group and Taliban extremists in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Nangarhar.

At least four petroleum storage tanks were set ablaze during deadly fighting as the Islamic State group tries to seize coastal export terminals in eastern Libya, the National Oil Company said Wednesday. The fighting, in which at least 10 security guards have died, began Monday as UN Libya envoy Martin Kobler struggles to convince the oil-rich North African country’s rival parliaments to agree on a unity government deal brokered by the world body. The fires broke out at key terminals in Al-Sidra and Ras Lanouf, located in the so-called “oil crescent” along Libya’s northern coast, said a statement from the NOC management loyal to the internationally recognised government. It was not clear whether the fires were still burning or if fighting was still underway for a third successive day in the IS push to seize the terminals IS has been trying for several weeks to push east from its coastal stronghold of Sirte, and officials have warned of crippling consequences if the jihadists manage to seize control of Libya’s oil resources.

The missiles shown in the footage obtained by Sky News are said to be 99 per cent accurate once they have locked on to their targets. Concerns that Isis could use abandoned or outdated western military equipment were raised in 2014, after it was reported that Isis had captured vehicles, firearms and even missiles from the US-armed Iraqi army during their advances in Iraq. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon spoke out this morning before an emergency Security Council meeting, condemning the alleged hydrogen bomb test by North Korea. “This act is profoundly destabilizing for regional security,” Ki-Moon said, noting that, if true, it “seriously undermines” existing nuclear regulations. He urged North Korea to “cease any further nuclear activities and meet its obligations for verifiable denuclearization.” The concern over North Korea’s nuclear capability was renewed when a magnitude-5.1 earthquake was measured in the country near the site of an earlier nuclear weapons test, officials said Tuesday night. The tremblor was detected about 12 miles from Sungjibaegam and the South Korean weather agency said indications were that it was “artificial.” “We have perfectly succeeded in testing our first hydrogen bomb,” an anchor said on North Korean state TV. “It was one hundred percent capable from our own wisdom, technology and power. Eighty-two leading Democrats have cosponsored a House Resolution (H.Res. 569) “Condemning violence, bigotry, and hateful rhetoric towards Muslims in the United States”. The Resolution was introduced in the House of Representatives by Democrat Donald S. Beyer (Virginia) on December 17, 2015 — a mere 15 days after Tashfeen Malik and Syed Farook gunned down 14 innocent Americans and wounded 23 in an ISIS-inspired terror attack at a Christmas party in San Bernardino, California. The House Resolution states, “the victims of anti-Muslim hate crimes and rhetoric have faced physical, verbal, and emotional abuse because they were Muslim or believed to be Muslim,” and the House of Representatives “expresses its condolences for the victims of anti-Muslim hate crimes.” What victims? Of all 1,149 anti-religious hate crimes reported in the United States in 2014, only 16.1% were directed against Muslims, according to the FBI. By contrast, over half of all anti-religious hate crimes were directed against Jews – 56.8%. The fewest, 8.6% of anti-religious hate crimes, were directed against Christians (Protestants and Catholics). The Resolution goes on to denounce “…in the strongest terms the increase of hate speech, intimidation, violence, vandalism, arson, and other hate crimes targeted against mosques, Muslims, or those perceived to be Muslim.”

Headline: The Zika virus may cause birth defects — and experts think it’s coming to the US
The Zika virus, a rare tropical disease that’s causing a panic in Brazil — because it may lead to babies being born with abnormally small heads — has now made its way to Puerto Rico. And experts fear the United States could be next. Until last year, the Zika virus, which is spread by mosquitoes, was mainly confined to Africa and Asia. But in 2015 the disease made the leap to the Western Hemisphere, affecting more than a million people in Brazil. It’s since spread to Colombia, Venezuela, Mexico, and nine other countries. Last week, the first confirmed case in Puerto Rico was reported. The puzzling spread of Zika is part of an uptick of mosquito-borne illnesses — including West Nile, dengue, and chikungunya — in areas that have never experienced them before. “It’s spreading really fast,” said Scott Weaver, the director of the Institute for Human Infections and Immunity at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. “I think [the Zika virus] is going to be knocking on the doorstep in places like Florida and Texas probably in the spring or summer.” The overwhelming majority of people who come into contact with Zika — through bites from infected mosquitoes — seem to experience either a flu-like illness or no symptoms at all. But there’s reason to pay attention to this virus: Researchers say that Zika may potentially cause microcephaly, a congenital condition that’s associated with a small head and incomplete brain development in newborns.

Headline: Mind-reading computer deciphers words from brainwaves BEFORE they are spoken
A ‘mind-reading’ device that can decipher words from brainwaves without them being spoken has been developed by Japanese scientists, raising the prospect of ‘telepathic’ communication. Researchers have found the electrical activity in the brain is the same when words are spoken and when they are left unsaid. By looking for the distinct wave forms produced before speaking, the team was able to identify words such as ‘goo’, ‘scissors’ and ‘par’ when spoken in Japanese. The scientists behind the technology said they can identify brain waves associated with syllables or letters of the Japanese alphabet, meaning it may be possible to decode entire words and sentences without the need for any of them being physically spoken. To ‘listen’ to the unspoken words, the researchers used a method called electroencephalogram, or EEG. This technology records electrical activity from the brain using an array of electrodes on the scalp to detect the brain waves.

Headline: Powerful storms threaten mudslides in drought-stricken California
The most powerful storm yet in a series of El Nino storms pushed onto the California coast Wednesday as police and outreach teams kept an eye on riverbeds where thousands of the city’s homeless live and would be vulnerable to flash flooding. Los Angeles authorities have spent days getting the transients from low-lying areas and shuttles were available to bring people to shelters that had room for as many as 6,000 beds, according to Mayor Eric Garcetti. There was a renewed risk that the Los Angeles River and other waterways could rise quickly as the third of four predicted storms moved in from the Pacific. The latest system is packing colder temperatures, stronger winds and heavier rainfall than the previous ones that have battered the state since the weekend. Heavy rain drenched San Francisco during the morning commute and sparked mayhem as drivers crashed, trees toppled and streets and streams flooded. The California Highway Patrol estimated there were nearly two dozen weather-related crashes in the region by 7 a.m. The National Weather Service issued a flash-flood watch for nearly the entire Bay Area. The storm was expected to move south through the Central Coast and into Southern California by midday.
