Headline: US Slammed for Calling Israeli Land Purchase ‘Occupation’
Headline: France criticizes Israel’s plan to build in east Jerusalem
Harsh criticism has been sounded in several quarters for the White House condemnation of Jerusalem housing plans – especially the use of the term “occupation.” The OU (Union of Orthodox Jewish Congregations of America) issued a statement “strongly reject[ing]” the “harsh rhetoric” employed by American officials regarding recent Jerusalem housing plans. White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said on Wednesday, “The US condemns the recent occupation of residential buildings in the neighborhood of Silwan.” He added that the new residents have an “agenda [that] only serves to escalate tensions.” The OU responded that the statement suggests that “the onus for the peace process impasse is upon Israel, when in fact it is decades of Palestinian and Arab rejectionism and incitement (such as that voiced by Palestinian President Abbas at the UN General Assembly last week) that ‘poisons the atmosphere’ for peace.” Media analyst Dr. Aaron Lerner of IMRA added that the use of the word “occupation” is not all appropriate and even dangerous.

Headline: Hamas Agrees with Netanyahu: ‘We want an Islamic State’
While it may reject Israel’s existence, Hamas certainly agrees with Prime MInister Binyamin Netanyahu – and disagrees with the US State Department – that its “ultimate goal” is to establish an “Islamic state” (caliphate) over what it sees as the “occupied lands of Palestine.” In short, while the US disputes PM Netanyahu’s statement that “Hamas is ISIS, and ISIS is Hamas” – Hamas itself does not. China Weekly reported that, on Tuesday, senior Hamas leader Mahmoud al-Zahar said in a ceremony to honor police officers killed in the latest Gaza operation that “we don’t want to establish an Islamic emirate in Gaza; we want an Islamic state in all Palestine.” Al-Zahar added that if Hamas could insert some of its military assets into Judea and Samaria, “we will be able to go for a successful battle that we will win at the end.” And despite entering a “unity” government with Fatah, he promised that Hamas will stick “to the program of resistance,” adding that “during the last war on Gaza, we learned how to liberate all the occupied lands of Palestine.” On Monday, the US State Department refused to agree with Netanyahu’s UN General Assembly assertion that, “as Hamas’s charter makes clear, Hamas’s immediate goal is to destroy Israel. But Hamas has a broader objective. They also want a caliphate… So when it comes to their ultimate goals, Hamas is ISIS and ISIS is Hamas.”

Headline: Terror Attack in Samaria Thwarted by IDF
In parallel to the so-called “silent intifada” of rock and firebomb terror plaguing Jerusalem, incidents of gunfire in Judea and Samaria have been sharply increasing in recent months, following Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction’s declared “return to terror.” That announcement, which was made by Fatah’s “military wing,” the Al-Aqsa Martyrs’ Brigades, has led not only to an outpouring of attacks on Jews but also apparently to shootings between rival members of Fatah. Fatah activists were ambushed this Wednesday in a hail of gunfire in the Arab town of Beit Duqqu, located in Samaria just to the northwest of Jerusalem. The Fatah members who were fired on had taken part in a meeting to discuss disagreements in the organization regarding priorities for “action” in the Jerusalem area. One of them told the Palestinian Arab Safa news agency that additional gunfire targeted their car as it passed adjacent to the Arab town of Al Jib, also located to the northwest of Jerusalem, and that residents told them another shooting ambush was waiting for them in the village of Beit Nabala. In a separate incident a week ago, Fatah members were similarly shot at in the northern Jerusalem neighborhood of Shuafat.

Headline: Israel: Hamas has begun testing extended-range rockets
Israel has been monitoring renewed rocket tests by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Israeli military sources said Hamas has renewed the testing of extended-range surface-to-surface rockets. The sources said Hamas engineers have overseen the development of new Iranian-designed rockets in launches from the Gaza Strip into the Mediterranean Sea. “They have accelerated all efforts to rearm and develop much more powerful weapons than we have seen until now,” a source said. The sources said Hamas has so far launched five advanced rockets in tests from the Gaza coast into the Mediterranean over the last month. They said the tests appear to include that of an indigenous variant of the Syrian-origin M-302, with a range of 160 kilometers. Hamas fired several M-302s during the 50-day war with Israel in July and August 2014. The missiles reached the northern Israeli port of Haifa but did not cause casualties or significant damage. The sources said a key Hamas launching pad was in the former Jewish community of Netzarim, evacuated by Israel during its unilateral withdrawal from the Gaza Strip in 2005. They said at least five rockets were fired from Netzarim in September 2014, the first taking place days after the ceasefire with Israel. At the same time, Hamas has been restoring its missile and rocket assembly line. The sources said the effort reflected Hamas’ determination to renew fighting with Israel should the current ceasefire collapse. “Hamas seek to restore the rocket lathes, of which 50 percent were destroyed during the fighting in Gaza,” the authoritative Israel Defense magazine said. “In the IDF, they are monitoring the situation and say that these are not new rockets with new ranges.”

Headline: Israel Confirms Gazans will be Allowed to Pray on Temple Mount
The Coordinator of Government Activities in Judea, Samaria and Gaza (COGAT) on Wednesday evening announced that Gazans will be allowed to travel to Jerusalem for the upcoming Eid al Adha holiday, part of a series of measures decided upon by Israel for the benefit of Palestinian Arabs during the holiday. As part of the announced measures, the IDF decided to approve 500 family visits in Gaza to Palestinians residing in Judea and Samaria over the age of 60. 200 permits for travel abroad via the Ben Gurion Airport will be given out to Palestinian Arab businessmen. 500 residents of Gaza, aged 60 and over, will be permitted entry to the Temple Mount complex for prayers on each day of the holiday. In addition, Israel will permit 500 Gaza residents over the age of 60 to visit relatives (first degree) in Judea and Samaria.

Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate the Nusra Front on Thursday denied that it pledged to stop executing Lebanese hostages being held near the northeast border town of Arsal and said it was not engaged in negotiations for their release. In a statement posted to Twitter, the jihadi group also said it had nothing to do with last month’s kidnapping of Lebanese soldier Kamal Hujeiri, who was released earlier this week. “What was recently mentioned by Lebanese media channels about our pledge to not kill any abducted soldier is untrue,” the extremist group wrote in their statement. Lebanese officials on Wednesday said that Nusra and ISIS pledged not to execute anymore of the 21 soldiers and policemen being held captive near Arsal during negotiations to release them. But Nusra claimed it no longer had a representatives engaged in the negotiations, accusing the Lebanese government. The jihadists refuse to negotiate a deal until “the [Syrian] refugees’ problems are resolved and the recently detained among them are released.”

Headline: Report: Western Intelligence Warns ISIL Preparing to Launch Attacks in North
Lebanon’s Army commander said he expected a renewal of clashes in northeast Lebanon, adding that the military is reinforcing its position on the hills surrounding the town of Arsal. Gen. Jean Kahwagi told Sky News Arabia that the Lebanese Army was working on impose a blockade on militants based in Arsal’s hillsides and cutting all supply routes. Meanwhile, Extremists from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant are seeking to carry out security operations in northern Lebanon, reported al-Akhbar newspaper on Thursday. Western diplomatic sources told the daily that western intelligence obtained information that ISIL-linked groups, present in the northern city of Tripoli, are preparing to carry out these attacks in an attempt to seize northern border areas. Lebanese security sources meanwhile confirmed such information, but made light of the claims that militants would take over border regions. They instead noted that the armed groups, which include Lebanese and Syrian members, are planning to launch assaults against army barracks, reported al-Akhbar. Jihadists from the al-Nusra Front and Islamic State overran in August the northeastern border town of Arsal where they clashed with the army. The fighting ended with the gunmen abducting a number of soldiers and policemen from the area. The army last week raided Syrian refugee encampments in Arsal where it arrested a number of suspects.

The fight for the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobane geared up early Thursday as Islamic State militants advanced, a monitoring group said. “Fighting intensified at dawn Thursday between Islamic State militants and the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) at western outskirts of the city of Kobane, prompting the YPG to withdraw from the area to the outskirts of the city, while militants advanced,” the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The watchdog said the YPG and other Kurdish fighters were preparing for street battles amid fears that the Islamic State militants might commit massacres if they take the city. The observatory said that additional fierce fighting was taking place in the eastern and southern parts of the city, which was being shelled by Islamic State militants.

Syria Headline: Local Dynamics Shift in Response to U.S.-Led Airstrikes in Syria
Main Points:
- The responses of rebel groups and civilians within Syria to the U.S. and coalition airstrikes are an important indicator of the unviability of a counter-ISIS strategy that does not fully engage with the Syrian population in order to facilitate a counter-ISIS movement within Syria.
- Jabhat al-Nusra has capitalized on civilian opposition to the airstrikes to deepen its influence and to propagate its narrative that the coalition is working alongside Assad against the revolution.
- The reactions of a number of Islamist groups to the strikes that targeted JN on September 23 indicate their close operations with JN. If additional strikes against JN occur, JN is likely to leverage front groups to conceal the extent of their activities.
- If airstrikes against ISIS and JN continue to alienate the Syrian population and rebel leadership, it is possible that the unrest will encourage and enable a consolidation of ISIS and JN efforts.

Syria Headline: Hundreds Protest in Syria’s Homs after School Bombing
Hundreds of people took to the streets of the Syrian city of Homs on Thursday, demanding its governor resign after a suicide bomber killed 47 schoolchildren, a monitoring group said. The protesters vented their anger at Governor Talal al-Barazi over the deadly attack in a loyalist neighborhood of the government-controlled central city, not at the Damascus government, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. “Hundreds of people are protesting, chanting slogans against the governor,” Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP. “The protest began as a mass funeral for the children, but morphed into a demonstration as residents vented their rage over Wednesday’s school attack,” he added. The Observatory updated its toll to 47 children killed in the double bombing by a lone suicide attacker against the school.

Iraq Headline: 40 jihadists, 17 police and army killed in Iraq clashes
Islamic State-led insurgents took control of most of the western Iraqi town of Hit in Anbar province early on Thursday, security sources and local officials said. The fall of Hit exposes the Ain al-Asad military base in the nearby town of al-Baghdadi to attack. Iraqi government forces suffered big losses after insurgents laid siege to other military camps in recent months. “Ninety percent of Hit has been overrun by militants,” said Adnan al-Fahdawi, an Anbar provincial council member, adding that the attackers were better armed than local security forces. Kurdish Headline: ISIL Kobani massacre could derail peace talks: Ocalan
The imprisoned leader of Turkey’s outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) Abdullah Ocalan has warned that peace talks between his group and the Turkish government will come to an end if the ISIL Takfiri militants are allowed to carry out a massacre in the Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani. “If this massacre attempt achieves its goal it will end the [peace] process,” Ocalan said in a statement released on Thursday, as ISIL militants inch closer to the Kurdish town on the Turkish border. “I urge everyone in Turkey who does not want the process and the democracy voyage to collapse to take responsibility in Kobani,” he said. He added that the attempt would not only target Kurds but also would lead Turkey into a new era of insurgency. “If this attempt at a massacre succeeds, it will not only end the peace process, but will also pave the way for a new and long-lasting coup,” he said.

Headline: Army warns US military personnel on ISIS threat to family members
An Army intelligence bulletin is warning U.S. military personnel to be vigilant after Islamic State militants called on supporters to scour social media for addresses of their family members – and to “show up [at their homes] and slaughter them.” The assessment, obtained by Fox News, came from the Army Threat Integration Center which issues early warnings of criminal and terrorist threats to Army posts worldwide. The advisory warns military personnel and their families about the Islamic State, or ISIS, calling on supporters to target their homes. While there is no independent intelligence to corroborate the ISIS threats, the bulletin recommends more than a dozen precautions to military personnel to protect their homes — and their online profiles.

Headline: Ukraine separatists: One killed in mortar attack on Red Cross HQ in Donetsk
A mortar bomb has hit the Red Cross headquarters in the rebel-held city of Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, amid fierce fighting in the area Thursday. Ukraine separatists said one person, a Swiss national, was killed in the attack. A Reuters witness at the scene saw the body of a middle-aged man lying at the entrance to the Red Cross building. Donestk is the capital of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic, held by pro-Russian rebels. The region has seen some of the heaviest fighting during the months-long unrest in Ukraine. The purported bombing of the Red Cross headquarters comes amid fierce fighting in Donetsk on Thursday, with witnesses reporting massive explosions in the area where the city’s airport is located – another sign that a month-old ceasefire was being ignored. Russian news agencies reported the fighting near the airport, but there were no immediate casualty figures. The Ukrainian military said that pro-Russian separatists had launched fresh attempts to take the airport. “Ukrainian paratroopers heroically repelled the attack, killing seven fighters and injuring more than a dozen,” National Security Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko told the Interfax Ukraine news agency.

Headline: Libya violence ‘threatens Tunisia stability’
Tunisia’s foreign minister has warned that turmoil in neighbouring Libya threatens to undermine his country’s still fragile democratic transition ahead of parliamentary and presidential elections. “The instability of Libya has profound repercussions on the economic, security and political affairs of Tunisia,” said Mongi Hamdi, the foreign minister for Tunisia’s caretaker interim government. “We are in the process of building a new house, a new democracy, and there is a fire next door.” The fighting between pro-government forces in Libya and a coalition of Islamist militias has continued even as representatives of the two sides meet for preliminary talks. The instability poses the greatest threat to the only post-Arab Spring country that has managed to balance competing political forces through a democratic process. The violence has displaced about one out of every five Libyans into Tunisia — 1.5 million people — straining the country’s already in crisis economy, according to Mr Hamdi. Islamist militants and arms flow over Libya’s porous border with Tunisia. At the same time, the proxy battle between regional powers supporting the competing groups in Libya has fuelled polarisation on all sides of the political divide in Tunisia.

Turkey’s parliament has backed a motion allowing its military to enter Iraq and Syria to join the campaign against Islamic State (IS) militants. The resolution – passed with a three-quarters majority – will also permit foreign troops to use Turkish territory for the operation. Turkey has been under pressure to play a more active role in the US-led fight. The government dropped its reluctance to combat IS militants directly after the release of 46 hostages last month. The Turkish citizens had been held by IS in northern Iraq. However, Turkey still remains wary of retaliation by IS and also fears helping Kurds, who are fighting the militants. Turkey has fought a long civil war with its Kurdish minority. Protesters demonstrated outside parliament as the debate began but the motion was passed with 298 MPs in favour and 98 against.

Headline: Turkey vows to back its soldiers in Syria exclave
Islamic State’s (IS) extremists captured several Turkish soldiers who were guarding the shrine of Suleyman Shah near the River Euphrates (35 km south of Kobane city) near the Syrian Turkish borders. The burial place of Suleyman Shah, the grandfather of Osman I (founder of the Ottoman Empire) was attacked by IS militants on Tuesday at midnight. Turkey claims its sovereignty of the tomb according to 1921 agreement signed with France, when Syria was under the French mandate. Turkey by this agreement has the right to defend the mausoleum. So, several Turkish soldiers are guarding the shrine inside the Syrian Territory. The Turkish Deputy Prime Minister, Bulent Arinc, said that the IS militants are advancing towards the tomb of Suleyman Shah in northern Syria, without providing any additional details. However, local activists reported that the group of the Islamic State (also known as ISIS, ISIL) arrested a group of Turkish soldiers in the vicinity of the shrine. Headline: Gulf Ministers Say Unstable Yemen a Threat
Headline: AQAP Claims Ambushing, Bombing Houthis and Soldiers in Sana’a, Shabwa
Instability in Yemen, where Shiite rebels overran the capital last week, threatens regional security, interior ministers of the Sunni-dominated Gulf Cooperation Council said after an emergency meeting on Wednesday. “The GCC states will not stand idly by in the face of factional foreign intervention as Yemen’s security and the security of the GCC states are one and the same,” the ministers said in a statement after talks in the Saudi Arabian city of Jeddah. Yemeni authorities have accused Iran of backing the Houthi rebels in a similar fashion to their support for Lebanon’s Hizbullah. The GCC ministers “confirm that any threats to the security and safety of Yemen and its citizens is a threat to regional security and stability, and interests of the people.” The rebels advanced from their stronghold in northwestern mountains to the capital Sanaa last month, then seized key state installations with little or no resistance on September 21. Gulf ministers called the events “regretful” and expressed “their serious concern at the threats faced by the Yemeni government and its institutions.” Under a United Nations-brokered peace deal signed the day the rebels took control of Sanaa, they are supposed to withdraw once a new neutral prime minister is named. President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi has so far failed to appoint a new government chief. The deal also required Hadi to name an adviser from within the rebel movement. The Gulf ministers from Bahrain, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Saudi Arabia denounced the “armed acts” that occurred. They called for seized official facilities to be returned to the Yemeni state, and expressed support for United Nations resolutions.

An estimated 4,000 anti-austerity demonstrators took to the streets of Naples on Thursday, carrying placards with caricatures of German Chancellor Angela Merkel amid tight security in the whereabouts of the ECB meeting. The Italian protesters, including a large group of students and laid-off workers, slammed the ECB for the rise in poverty and unemployment in their country. “No to the ECB, no to austerity – housing and income for all,” chanted the outraged demonstrators. Italian riot police fired tear gas and water cannon to push back the protesters who were trying to climb the wall of the building where the ECB meeting was taking place.

Headline: Hong Kong to Hold Limited Talks With Protesters
Hong Kong police have warned pro-democracy protesters of “serious consequences” if they try to occupy government buildings. “This action will obstruct officers from carrying out their duties, which could lead to serious consequences,” Hong Kong police spokesperson Steve Hui said on Thursday. He added that occupying or surrounding government buildings allows criminals to take advantage of the situation and to undermine the public order in the city. The warning came after protesters threatened to occupy key government offices unless the city’s leader Leung Chun-ying steps down by Thursday night. According to reports, hundreds of protesters have gathered outside Leung’s office since early morning. As many as 50 police officers also stood guard around the building. Meanwhile, China on Wednesday warned the United States against any meddling in Hong Kong’s internal affairs, saying Beijing will not tolerate illegal acts in its territory.

Economic collapse Revelation 6:5-6 & James 5:1-3– Worldwide
“ When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Revelation) “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.” (James)
Headline: IMF slashes Russia’s growth forecast
The International Monetary Fund cut its economic growth forecast for Russia, noting geopolitical uncertainty is causing investor hesitancy. The Washington-based lender halved its forecast for Russian economic growth in 2015 from one percent to one-half percent. “Geopolitical uncertainties are having a big direct impact on the Russian economy. Uncertainty makes investors very reluctant to invest in Russia,” said the IMF’s Antonio Spilimbergo at the conclusion of a semiannual visit to Moscow. He added, though, that despite Western sanctions affecting the Russian economy, Russia has a large foreign-reserve fund, a low public debt and a small public deficit. The country should stick to existing fiscal policy and not impose capital controls.

Wars & Rumors of Wars Matthew 24:6 , Revelation 6:3-4 & Revelation 6:8 “ And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Weapons of Mass Destruction Zechariah 14:12 “And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.”
Headline: US tanks arrive in Baltics, Poland requests greater US military presence
Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz says she wants a greater military presence in Poland in light of events in Ukraine. The comment came as the US announced it is deploying 700 soldiers and 20 ‘Ironhorse’ tanks across the three Baltic States and Poland. The comments were made during Kopacz’s inauguration speech to the lower house of the Polish parliament.
“In the face of what is happening in Ukraine, closer relations with the United States become more important. That is why my government will make every effort to ensure that the United States increases its military presence in Poland,” she said. Meanwhile, the so-called ‘Ironhorse’ armed cavalry unit – consisting of 20 M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks and about 700 soldiers, along with Bradley and Stryker armored vehicles – is being sent from its base in Texas and marks a considerable increase in tensions between NATO and Russia.
The Baltic countries and Poland have said they are nervous about an increasingly assertive Russia in the face of recent events in Ukraine. This is the first time the US has shipped heavy armored reinforcements to Europe since the end of the Cold War, Reuters reported. “The purpose is to be a very visible demonstration of commitment to our allies. We may take slightly longer to deploy than lighter forces, but there’s nothing like a tank if you really want to achieve effect,” said Captain John Farmer, public affairs officer for Ironhorse.

Headline: Satellite imagery shows North Korea readying for rocket launch
North Korea’s Sohae Satellite Launching Station appears to be readying for a rocket launch, a U.S. think tank reported Thursday. According to the U.S.-Korea Institute at Johns Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Affairs, satellite imagery of the Sohae Satellite Launching Station in August and September indicates that a year-long construction project to upgrade the facility has been completed. “With the completion of work, North Korea is now ready to move forward with another rocket launch should a decision be made in Pyongyang to do so. If such a decision were to be made soon, a rocket could be launched by the end of 2014,” imagery expert Nick Hansen concluded in his analysis published on the 38 North website. Satellite imagery indicated rocket motor tests were conducted in August and September. Although it’s unclear whether they were successful, Hansen points out that “rocket motor tests are typically conducted prior to full-scale test launches of a missile that precede a weapon becoming operational.”

Headline: Ebola outbreak: ‘Five infected every hour’ in Sierra Leone
A patient in Honolulu, Hawaii, has been placed in isolation with suspected Ebola, the Department of Health confirmed on Wednesday. Even though the disease is a possibility, the patient has not yet been specifically tested for it, but is displaying some symptoms. The Hawaii Nurses Association said the person is being treated at The Queen’s Medical Center. Officials have not revealed the patient’s gender or travel history, reported KHON. ‘We are early in the investigation of a patient — very, very, early, who we’re investigating that might have Ebola,’ said Dr. Melissa Viray, deputy state epidemiologist. The Department of Health is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on this particular case to ensure that is it being handled with the utmost caution and care. ‘We’ve asked the hospitals to tell us about is anyone with a travel history and anyone with a fever, and when those things come together, we’ve asked them to be very careful and in an abundance of caution while you’re working, for whatever else might be going on, also make sure you isolate against Ebola, just in case,’ said Dr. Melissa Viray, deputy state epidemiologist.

Headline: Paralysis cases in Alberta under investigation for Enterovirus D68 link
Headline: Enterovirus D68 found in 4 patients who have died, including 10-year-old girl
Alberta Health Services (AHS) says it’s investigating four cases of paralysis in children, but the patients have not been diagnosed with Enterovirus D68. Provincial health officials in B.C. are trying to determine if a man and boy with the illness developed paralysis-like symptoms because of the infections. Doctors are watching the two cases but say it’s too soon to say if the virus is the cause. Alberta health officials say there has been no paralysis in any of the 50 confirmed EV-D68 cases in the province — 29 of which are in Calgary — but they are keeping a close eye on four pediatric patients to see if there is a link. The patients were admitted to the Alberta Children’s Hospital over the past week for assessment. “It could be limb weakness or some facial weakness,” said Dr. Judy MacDonald, Calgary’s medical officer of health. “With those four cases, we do not know if this is Enterovirus D68. Some of them have tested positive for entero-rhinovirus but there’s additional testing that will need to be done.” MacDonald says she has also heard reports of two cases in the Edmonton area.

Headline: Guangdong dengue outbreak rages on with nearly 13,500 cases
The number of dengue fever cases in Guangdong has increased to 13,449 as of Sept. 30, a figure 19.38 times higher than the same period last year. Even one of the province’s vice governors has contracted the virus, reports our Chinese-language sister paper Want Daily. The outbreak this year was caused by rising temperature and intermittent rains which provided the warmth and humidity ideal for a mosquito population explosion. Standing pools of water left after rain are the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, and has given their population density a fivefold boost over past figures in many areas in Guangdong province. The majority, or 84%, of dengue fever cases were in Guangzhou, followed by 1,389 cases in Foshan, 226 cases in Zhongshan and 187 cases in Jiangmen. One of cases is reportedly one of the province’s eight vice governors but the provincial government has yet to confirm the claim.

Headline: Tropical storm Simon forms off Mexico’s Pacific coast
Tropical storm Simon formed early on Thursday off Mexico’s Pacific coast, but it was projected to wheel out to sea in the coming days. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said that as of Thursday morning, the storm was about 360 miles (580 km) south-southeast of the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, which was slammed by Hurricane Odile last month. Simon was moving to the west-northwest and could become a hurricane by Saturday, the Miami-based center said.

Headline: NASA sees intensifying typhoon Phanfone heading toward Japan
An intensifying typhoon called Phanfone that originated east of Guam on September 28, 2014 is headed toward southern Japan. The TRMM satellite crossed above Typhoon Phanfone on October 1, 2014 at 1039 UTC and gathered data about rainfall rates occurring in the storm. TRMM, or the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission satellite, is a managed by both NASA and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency and can peer into a storm and determine how light or heavy rain is falling. At NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, rainfall data from TRMM’s Microwave Imager (TMI) Precipitation Radar (PR) was used to create an image of the storm. Typhoon Phanfone’s winds were estimated to be above 65 knots (about 75 mph/120 kph) at the time TRMM passed over the storm. Winds within the increasingly powerful typhoon are expected to increase to over 100 kts (115 mph/185 kph) in the next few days while moving toward the islands of southern Japan. This rainfall analysis revealed that Phanfone was producing rainfall over a very large area. The TRMM PR instrument indentified some storms in these bands were dropping rain at a rate of over 76 mm (almost 3 inches) per hour.
