Headline: Rights groups urge Palestinians to join ICC
Human rights groups including Amnesty International on Thursday urged the Palestinians to sign up to the International Criminal Court. Seventeen local and international human rights organisations made the request in a joint letter to Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, Amnesty said. The London-based organisation said if the Palestinians “signed up to the Rome Statute of the ICC, the Court would have jurisdiction over war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on Palestinian territories and by its nationals elsewhere.”
The joint letter urged Abbas to “take the necessary steps for Palestine to become a party” to the ICC. “Doing so would sent an important message that entrenched impunity for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on Palestinian territories must end once and for all,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa Programme director.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas stated in a PA TV interview Thursday night that Hamas, its unity pact partner, has not been asked to recognize Israel and will not be part of a transitional government that is to be built soon. Abbas also repeated his intention to erect an interim government which will, allegedly, recognize Israel and condemn violence and terror. Abbas’s announcement reiterates the growing cognitive and political dissonance between the two organizations. Hamas continues to be adamant over its full control of a “unity” government, expressing over and over again that it would remain in control of both Gaza and the PA after elections and insisting that Ismail Haniyeh would rule the government.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in an interview with Palestine newspaper on Friday that Fatah had agreed to release all Hamas terrorists from prison – regardless of their crimes or current political affiliation. Meanwhile, Hamas has allegedly jumped on board as well – allowing journalists from Fatah-backed papers Al-Quds and Al-Ayyam to enter Gaza and releasing Fatah prisoners held in Gaza over their own political affiliations. Meanwhile, A lawmaker for the Hamas terrorist group which runs Gaza recently called for jihad against Israel in a Friday sermon. The lawmaker, Ahmad Abu Halabiya, said that jihad that this is the “one and only path” to conquer the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to liberate Jerusalem and “Palestine.”

Headline: Report: Netanyahu Promises Talmud Will Be Israeli Law
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reportedly revealed at a Likud conference on Wednesday some remarkable facets of the Basic Law he submitted last Thursday, which would enshrine Israel’s status as the nation-state of the Jewish people. Netanyahu told the head of Likud’s hareidi division Yaakov Vider at the conference that he intends to make the Hebrew calendar, which is based on Jewish law, the official calendar of Israel, reports Kikar Hashabat. The new law also would establish the Talmud, the core work of Jewish law, as an official basis for Israeli state law. “I’m going to personally be involved in the law defining the state of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people,” Netanyahu reportedly told Vider. “It’s a very important law that will influence how Israel will look in the future.”

An Israeli newspaper is reporting that 70% of Ukraine’s Jewish community is now considering emigrating to Israel and that many are “flooding” the Israeli consulate to secure immigration visas in order to flee the country. This follows reports earlier this week that Jewish leaders in Odessa have put together an evacuation plan should anti-Semitic displays in the embattled Eastern European country escalate. Rabbi Avraham Wolf, who has served as chief rabbi of Odessa and southern Ukraine for 22 years, told the Yedioth Ahronoth daily that the emigration demand is unprecedented. “We experienced years of starvation and wars, and in all of those years I haven’t heard so much talk about making aliyah [moving to Israel] as I do now,” he said. Since the unrest began in Ukraine, there have been reports of anti-Jewish incidents including the fire-bombing of a synagogue, the defacement of a Holocaust memorial and the distribution of leaflets ordering Jews to register their religion, their property and to pay a fine, a document that was later characterized as a provocation.

Indyk insisted that both sides were guilty of bad faith and “not serious” about peace. “One problem that revealed itself in these past nine months is that the parties, although both showing flexibility in the negotiations, do not feel the pressing need to make the gut-wrenching compromises necessary to achieve peace,” Indyk said. “It is safe to say that if we, the U.S., are the only party that has a sense of urgency, these negotiations will not succeed.” Indyk also blamed bad public relations for the failure. “While serious efforts were under way behind closed doors, we tried to get the leaders and their spokesmen to engage in synchronized positive messaging to their publics,” he stated.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday that he was ready to resume negotiations with Israel but, as he has done in the past, placed preconditions.
Speaking in a television interview and quoted by the Ma’an news agency, Abbas conditioned a return to talks on Israel releasing the fourth batch of terrorist prisoners and freezing construction in Judea and Samaria for three months. Israel cancelled the fourth terrorist release “gesture” in early April, after the PA requested to join 15 international agencies in breach of the conditions of the peace talks. Israel subsequently pulled out of the talks altogether, after the PA signed the unity pact with Hamas. Abbas said in Thursday’s interview that it was Israel that had halted the negotiations, and that Israel had threatened to stop allowing the transfer of funds to the Palestinian Authority, a threat he called a form of “gangsterism.”

A visit planned by the leader of Lebanon’s largest Christian sect to Jerusalem to meet Pope Francis has unleashed a barrage of criticism in the Arab country, which remains at war with Israel. Cardinal Bechara Rai, head of Lebanon’s Maronite Catholic church, will be the first leader of the church to visit Jerusalem since the Arab part of the contested city was captured by Israel in a 1967 war. Francis will start a three-day pilgrimage to Jordan, the West Bank and Israel on May 24. Lebanon bans its citizens from visiting Israel or having business dealings with Israelis. The Lebanese media went on the attack following the announcement, with As Safir, the country’s leading daily newspaper, dubbing the visit “a historic sin.” Pierre Abi Saab, the deputy editor-in-chief of the daily Al-Akhbar, accused Rai in a recent editorial of setting “a dangerous precedent,” opening a “door to all believers who are eager to visit the holy places.” He called on the cleric to reconsider a trip that would “humanize (Israeli) occupation of Palestinian territories until “the hour of liberation comes.”

El-Sissi is seen as the overwhelming favorite to win the May 26-27 vote.

The US 6th Fleet frigate arrived in Georgia for three days of exercises with the country’s coastguard in the Black Sea after completing joint live-fire exercises and an anti-submarine warfare scenario along with Romanian ships. “Allied ships, planes, exercises show vigilance and resolve from the Baltic to the Black Sea. We’ll keep reinforcing NATO security,” NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen wrote on Twitter on Wednesday. Events in neighbouring Ukraine’s standoff with Russia have alarmed Tbilisi which fought and lost its own war with Moscow in 2008, and says it is still exposed to a Russian threat. Meanwhile, President Vladimir Putin is making his first visit to Crimea since Russia annexed it from Ukraine in March. He told crowds marking the 1945 Soviet victory over the Nazis that Crimea had shown loyalty to a “historical truth” in choosing to be part of Russia. The Kiev government protested at the visit, calling it a “gross violation of Ukraine’s sovereignty”.

A series of attacks in Iraq, including a bomb blast at a cafe in a Baghdad suburb, killed 15 people on Thursday, Iraqi officials said. The deadliest of the day’s attacks was the cafe bombing, which struck in the evening hours inside a small cafe in the capital’s northeastern suburb of Husseiniyah, killing four people and wounding eight, police officials said.
Two hours later, a bomb went off in a commercial street in Baghdad’s southern district of Dora, killing two people and wounded five. Later Thursday night, police said a bomb targeted a wedding party in Baghdad’s Abu Dashir neighborhood, killing three people and wounding seven. Earlier in the day, a roadside bomb exploded near an outdoor market in the town of Youssifiyah, about 20 kilometers (12 miles) south of Baghdad, killing three people and wounding nine. Police also said a bomb went off near a security checkpoint in northeastern Baghdad, killing two soldiers and wounded five people, including three civilians. And in the afternoon, a gunman riding a motorbike opened fire on a group of people walking in the street in the town of Madian, just south of Baghdad, killing one person and wounding four. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures for all attacks. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to media.

Headline: Iraq launches Fallujah offensive
Headline:Dozens killed as Iraqi forces attack militants in Fallujah
Ministry of Defense announced Friday that a full-scale military operation is underway in the embattled Sunni city of Fallujah. Government forces comprised of both soldiers and police are attempting to retake the city from the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, which seized control in December. As of Friday, many fighters were reported killed in the operation, and large number of weapons have been confiscated. Health officials said that Friday’s shelling killed at least 13 people and wounded 27 others. More than 300 people, mostly civilians, have died since the beginning of the year. Fallujah is home to an estimated 700,000 people and is situated in Anbar province, west of Baghdad.

Headline: State of emergency in unrest-hit Tunisian desert town
The Tunisian president has declared a state of emergency in Douz, a southern desert town swept by days of clashes between rival tribes, his office said. A statement late Thursday said an overnight curfew would remain in force until May 22 because of violence that broke out in the town. Several people were wounded in the unrest, which saw members of the two groups firing birdshot and hurling rocks and sticks at each other during clashes this week over a land dispute, interior ministry spokesman Mohamed Ali Aroui told AFP.
He was unable to give details on the victims of the violence, but said calm had returned on Friday. “Following the dangerous deterioration in the security situation… President Moncef Marzouki decided to declare a state of emergency in the South Douz region on Thursday, May 8 until Thursday, May 22,” his office said in a statement.

A silent killer is wiping out our area’s honey bee population, and beekeepers hope something is done soon before it’s too late. Perry and Beverly Riley have been beekeepers for 9 years. Since last summer, Perry has lost about 80-percent of his bees. He says last year’s drought hurt, and then this past winter did in a number more. “They’re already weak, and that just put the hammer to them,” said Perry. As if bad weather weren’t enough, beekeepers like the Riley’s will tell you there’s an even more dangerous bee killer out there: pesticides farmers use in their fields. “They don’t kill them all at once. It’s a slow kill. They’ll go in in the winter, and by spring they’re dead,” said Perry. Purdue University says bees are dying by the thousands. A dry spring means the pesticides can be wind blown onto plants like dandelions. When bees come to pollinate, they’re in essence covered in poison, which they take back to their hives.

Headline: Samples of a Dead Beehive Sent to USDA
A giant beehive was found dead in a backyard Santa Barbara house in February. The beehive had been there for over 11 years, but a few months ago residents found hundreds of the bees dead near the hive. “According to our Santa Barbara beekeeper member, she had seen quite a few bees had been struggling and twitching. She had a pretty good feeling that it was due to some sort of pesticide exposure,” said Todd Bebee, president of Santa Barbara Beekeepers Association. Samples of the beehive were taken on Thursday and shipped to Penn State. Maryann Frazier,country’s leading entomologist, will research the case and will have results within three to four weeks. For now the beehive will stay at the Santa Barbara Museum; video of the once existing beehive can be seen inside the “Bee Cell”.

North Korea is making final preparations to conduct its fourth nuclear test, South Korea’s defense minister said Thursday, but he added that it could be a bluff. Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin told South Korean journalists that North Korea is able to detonate a nuclear device at any moment, though he didn’t elaborate on what the final step of its preparations would be, according to ministry officials. It is much lower in women and hasn’t changed much. Syphilis is a potentially deadly bacterial disease that surfaces as genital sores. It was far more common until antibiotics became available in the 1940s, slashing the number of annual cases to below 6,000.
Last year, there were nearly 17,000 cases.

The Jois Foundation, also known as Somina, has partnered with the district “to develop an Ashtanga yoga program to replace traditional physical education,” according to the brief filed on behalf of students and parents in the district. Among the founders was Sonia Tudor Jones, an ardent devotee of yoga who wanted to “spread the gospel of Ashtanga through the country and even internationally.” Jones worked on a plan for a three-year “scientific study” in the schools using the religious program. When the lawsuit was heard, the trial court judge “acknowledged that, although not structured as a religious foundation per se, Jois/Sonima is ‘deeply involved in yoga and Ashtanga yoga’ and ‘has a mission to establish and teach Ashtanga yoga,’” the plaintiffs explained. The on-demand TV channel will be launched this summer by New Jersey-based atheist groups. It aims to reach out to atheists, humanists, freethinkers and others who are simply looking for a way out of faith.
American Atheists, the organization behind the endeavor, has said that it is time that America has such a platform for non-believes. “There’s a glut of religious TV programming out there, from televangelists to Christmas specials,” New York Daily News quoted spokesman Dave Muscato as saying. “But there’s no atheist channel. We wanted to fill that void.”
The newspaper notes that the new channel, named AtheistTV, will make use of contents from their own homegrown shows, as well as archive of footage from the past 50 years, which saw the philosophy of atheism grow. American Atheists already have a production studio in Cranford, NJ, where they make their cable show, called “Atheist Viewpoint”, which is distributed to 50 markets across the United States.
