Israel Swears-In New Unity Government
Israel finally has a new government after more than a year of deadlock, but the new power-sharing administration between the right and centrist wings has not put the political controversy to rest. The Israeli parliament gave its approval to the new unity government Sunday, 73-46. Benjamin Netanyahu will remain prime minister for 18 months. The head of the centrist Blue and White party, Benny Gantz, will be “alternate prime minister,” then they will swap jobs. “The public wants a unity government, and this is what the public is getting today,” Netanyahu said Sunday. “We chose to serve the country together.” Speaking after Netanyahu, Gantz said he chose a unity government over civil war, adding that “the worst political crisis Israel has known is over.” Netanyahu promised a budget that he says “will prevent the economy from collapsing, that will guarantee stability, that will restore growth — a budget that will give you, citizens of Israel, hope, and a horizon, by restoring three things: Jobs, jobs, jobs.” He also says Israel will not back away from plans to annex part of the West Bank.

Fatah calls on Palestinians to prepare for resisting Israel’s annexation plan
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah movement on Monday called on the Palestinians to be well-prepared to resist an Israeli plan of annexing parts of the West Bank’s territories. Israel Radio had reported that Israel plans to annex the Jordan Valley and some settlements in the West Bank on July, according to a coalition deal reached between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his competitor Benny Gantz. The Central Committee of the leading Fatah Movement, which held a meeting earlier on Monday in Ramallah, said in an emailed press statement that the new Israeli coalition “is adopting destructive policies and positions.” “The committee debated and studied the details on how will be the response to the Israeli annexation plan,” said the statement, adding that “the response will be approved by the Palestinian leadership which will convene on Tuesday.” The statement of Fatah’s Central Committee called on the Palestinian people to get ready and be on alert to confront the upcoming events that will be the result of implementing the Israeli annexation plan.

Supreme Court to hear petition over Jewish access to Temple Mount
The Supreme Court was due to hear a petition Monday to allow Jews to access to the Temple Mount compound in Jerusalem, which has been temporarily prohibited during the coronavirus crisis. The petitioners, Yehuda Etzion and Arnon Segal, are far-right activists who have been challenging the government to allow free access to the compound, which is holy to both Jews and Muslims. They claim that Israel made an arrangement with the Kingdom of Jordan to keep both Muslims and Jews off the Temple Mount while the coronavirus pandemic was at its height. The applicants’ lawyer, far-right activist Itamar Ben-Gvir, maintained that Jordan’s Waqf (Islamic trust), which has day-to-day control over the Temple Mount, was allowed back while Jews were still banned. The petitioners argue that preventing Jews from ascending while Muslims are allowed up is unconstitutional. They further claimed that banning Segal, who is also a journalist, was a violation of the freedom of the press.

Jordan’s king warns of ‘massive conflict’ if Israel annexes land in West Bank
Jordan’s King Abdullah has warned that should Israel move forward with plans to annex parts of the West Bank, it would lead to a “massive conflict” with his country, and did not rule out pulling out of Amman’s peace deal with the Jewish state. In an interview published Friday by the German daily Der Spiegel, Abdullah insisted that a two-state solution was “the only way forward” in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “What would happen if the Palestinian National Authority collapsed? There would be more chaos and extremism in the region. If Israel really annexed the West Bank in July, it would lead to a massive conflict with the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan,” he said, when asked by his interviewer about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s intention to “take advantage of the opportunity that [US President Donald] Trump has created to seize large parts of Palestine.” Jordan has been lobbying the EU to take “practical steps” to make sure annexation doesn’t happen. In a statement, Safadi “stressed the need for the international community and the European Union in particular to take practical steps that reflect the rejection of any Israeli decision to annex.”

Taliban suicide bomber kills 9 troops in eastern Afghanistan
A suicide bomber in a stolen military Humvee targeted a base in eastern Afghanistan belonging to the country’s intelligence service early on Monday, killing at least seven members of the force, a provincial official said. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. At least 40 members of the force were wounded in the attack near the city of Ghazni, the provincial capital of Ghazni, according to Arif Noori, the spokesman for the provincial governor. Eight of the wounded were in critical condition and were transferred to the capital, Kabul, for further treatment, Noori added. He said the bomber used a stolen military Humvee and detonated his vehicle full of explosives as he approached the main gate of the entrance. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said the insurgents were behind the attack in Ghazni province, where the Taliban control most of the countryside and the rural areas.

Bombs kill 7 in shelter for displaced in Libya
Bombs hit a shelter for displaced people in Libya’s capital Tripoli, killing at least seven people including a 5-year-old child from Bangladesh, health authorities said Sunday. The shelling of the facility in the city’s Furnaj district late Saturday also wounded at least 17 people, including a 52-year-old Bengali migrant and his 5-year-old child, Malek Merset, said a spokesman for the capital’s Field Medicine and Support Center. The man is also the father of the dead child. It was the latest attack on civilians in the fighting over Tripoli between eastern-based forces under military commander Khalifa Hifter and an array of militias loosely allied with the U.N.-supported but weak government in the capital.

Japan has fallen into recession for the first time since 2015 as the financial toll of the coronavirus continues to escalate. The world’s third biggest economy shrank at an annual pace of 3.4% in the first three months of 2020. The coronavirus is wreaking havoc on the global economy with an estimated cost of up to $8.8tn (£7.1tn). Last week, Germany slipped into recession as more major economies face the impact of sustained lockdowns. Japan did not go into full national lockdown, but issued a state of emergency in April which severely affected supply chains and businesses in the trade-reliant nation. The 3.4% fall in growth domestic product (GDP) for the first three months of 2020, follows a 6.4% decline during the last quarter of 2019, pushing Japan into a technical recession.

Visa Files Patent for Digital Fiat Currency
American finance service corporation VISA has filed a patent application to create blockchain-based digital fiat currency. The patent application was filed to the United States Patent and Trademark Office last Thursday. According to it, the fiat-pegged digital currency could replace physical money. Furthermore, the new system of a digital fiat currency might be used by central banks and merge the benefits of both fiat and cryptocurrencies. According to the text of the application, the VISA aims to digitize any financial system by minting digital fiat currency and ensuring the “removal of the physical currency from circulation in a fiat currency system”. The whole process should be implemented and managed by the “central entity computer”. As specified in the application, the digital version of the fiat would be identical to the physical fiat. Moreover, the denomination and serial numbers could be kept the same as well. The filing reveals, that the central entity might be linked with the governments of various jurisdictions. The application does not specify, what exactly the central entity could be, however, it gives a hint that it might be the central bank that implements monetary policy and regulates the monetary supply.

US Navy grants first waiver for transgender service member to serve under their preferred gender
The US Navy has granted a waiver allowing a transgender service member to serve “in their preferred gender” for the first time since the military enacted a transgender ban. “The acting Secretary of the Navy has approved a specific request for exemption related to military service by transgender persons and persons with gender dysphoria,” Navy spokeswoman Lt. Brittany Stephens told CNN. Stephens added that “this service member requested a waiver to serve in their preferred gender, to include obtaining a gender marker change in (the Defense Enrollment Eligibility Reporting System) and being allowed to adhere to standards associated with their preferred gender, such as uniforms and grooming.” The GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders and the National Center for Lesbian Rights said Friday that the waiver was granted to their client, a Naval officer who filed a lawsuit in March against the ban.

Mandatory coronavirus vaccination looming on the horizon
Since the coronavirus outbreak, the profile of the World Health Organization has skyrocketed, and so have suspicions about its motives and alliances. Which is why this year’s annual meeting of the organization’s members – which is slated to begin on Monday – should get interesting. The coronavirus will be the focus for the World Health Assembly meeting, to be attended by all 194 WHO member states plus observers, and where policies and budgets are reviewed and approved. But all eyes will be on how countries – including the US, Australia, Canada, France and Germany – pursue an investigation into China’s handling of the pandemic within the framework of the global health body. That could include taking the Chinese government to the international court. Leaders of these countries have already made clear that they want an inquiry, including investigating the origin of the virus, whether it was initially covered up by China, and if Beijing was slow to tell the world that the virus was being transmitted between humans. The WHO has itself been under fire, attacked for praising China’s pandemic response as “transparent” despite Beijing’s suppression of whistle-blowers and information at the start of the outbreak.

Coronavirus Vaccine Trial by Moderna Shows Promising Early Results
The first coronavirus vaccine to be tested in people appears to be safe and able to stimulate an immune response against the virus, its manufacturer, Moderna announced on Monday. The findings are based on results from the first eight people who each received two doses of the vaccine, starting in March. Those people, healthy volunteers, made antibodies that were then tested in human cells in the lab, and were able to stop the virus from replicating — the key requirement for an effective vaccine. The levels of those so-called neutralizing antibodies matched the levels found in patients who had recovered after contracting the virus in the community. The company has said that it is proceeding on an accelerated timetable, with the second phase involving 600 people to begin soon, and a third phase to begin in July involving thousands of healthy people. The Food and Drug Administration gave Moderna the go-ahead for the second phase earlier this month.

Amphan’s maximum sustained winds increased from 120 km/h (75 mph) to 260 km/h (160 mph) in just 24 hours to 06:00 UTC on May 18 — Category 5 hurricane equivalent on the Saffir-Simpson scale. This is one of the most extreme rapid intensifications of tropical systems on Earth. It’s likely that Amphan will continue intensifying over the next couple of hours, reaching maximum sustained wind speeds of 270 km/h (170 mph) and gusts to 325 km/h (200 mph) by 18:00 UTC. As of 09:00 UTC, Super Cyclonic Storm “Amphan” was located about 730 km (450 miles) south of Paradip, Odisha, 890 km (550 miles) SSW of Digha, West Bengal, and 1 010 km (630 miles) SSW of Khepupara, Bangladesh. The system was moving N at 7 km/h (4 mph).
