In the 11 days of the Israeli Defense Forces’ “Operation Guardian of the Walls,” Israeli forces destroyed some 62 miles of Hamas’s tunnel network in the Gaza Strip, according to IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Hidai Zilberman. Speaking hours after an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire took effect on Friday, Zilberman reported that some 200 Hamas operatives, including 25 high-ranking members, had been targeted and killed in IDF strikes during the fighting in Gaza. Israeli forces also demolished some 340 rocket launchers and 70 multi-barrel rocket launchers, as well as 35 mortars, according to the IDF. Ten Hamas government offices were destroyed, as well as 11 buildings belonging to its internal security forces and five banks used by Hamas. Israel also targeted and destroyed “dozens” of training camps and outposts, a command and control center and nine high-rise buildings that housed Hamas infrastructure, Zilberman added. The IDF also destroyed several dozen anti-tank targets and two unspecified “maritime threats.” Zilberman also said that two drone attacks by Hamas had been thwarted, and said that Hamas’s manufacturing and development capabilities had been degraded.

The United Arab Emirates stands ready to facilitate peace efforts between Israel and the Palestinians, the de facto ruler of the Gulf state said in remarks carried on state media on Sunday. Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al-Nahyan made the comments in a telephone call with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, whose country, with US support, brokered a ceasefire on Friday that ended the fiercest fighting in years between Israel and Islamist militant group Hamas. The UAE, which last year normalized ties with Israel, “is ready to work with all parties to maintain the ceasefire and explore new paths to reduce escalation and achieve peace,” state news agency WAM cited Sheikh Mohammed as saying. Jordan’s King Abdullah stressed on Sunday the importance of translating the Gaza ceasefire into an extended truce, and said there is no alternative to a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinians. King Abdullah called for “stepping up Arab and international efforts to translate the ceasefire into an extended truce to push for a political solution that fulfills the legitimate rights of Palestinians,” the royal court wrote on Twitter. Egypt and Qatar, which has ties with Hamas, led regional efforts for the ceasefire that ended 11 days of fighting in which aerial bombardment of Gaza killed 232 Palestinians and rocket attacks killed 12 people in Israel.

Bassem Eid: An Open Letter to My Palestinian Brethren
I know that the past 10 days have been incredibly devastating and equally bewildering. Why is the world letting the Israelis do this to you? I am writing to you, my Palestinian brothers and sisters, to open your eyes from the disinformation that your real captor, Hamas, is feeding you. To my Palestinian brethren, I implore you: please do not let Hamas brainwash you into thinking it has “achieved” anything on our behalf. Do not fall prey to its lies and manipulations. Hamas is not a social justice movement and it certainly does not care about me or you. Hamas deliberately used you as human shields, stationing rocket launchers and missile arsenals in your homes, apartments, office buildings and even hospitals—just as it did in 2014. And now Hamas has been carelessly shelling the most highly populated regions of Israel, with no specific target or strategy. Yet, I know from my sources in Gaza that as many as 25 percent of all rockets launched by Hamas crash within Gaza. That has resulted in Hamas killing as many as many as 50 of the civilians that it falsely blames on Israel. And are you proud of the fact that some of the Hamas missiles that Israeli Defense Forces failed to intercept ended up exploding in places like Jaffa, Abu Ghosh and Lod where Arab Israelis now live? Ask yourself, how exactly do our people benefit from any of this? And when hostilities end, you can be sure that it won’t be the people of Gaza or representatives of your true interests, but the Hamas gang that will be cutting the lucrative financial compensation deals with Qatar and European NGOs “to rebuild Gaza.” Remember who got rich last time after the 2014 war with Israel? Hamas will do the same exact thing: It will spend its next installments of Qatari money to replenish its arsenal rather than rebuild homes, purchase coronavirus vaccines or provide social services for the people. And Hamas is sure to continue to plot terrorist attacks on Israeli civilians. So Israel will have an even greater justification for restricting access to Al Aqsa and maintaining the defensive blockade around Gaza: It is you who will suffer, not Hamas with its rebuilt fancy villas. And the peace you so much deserve, which could have been possible when Israel withdrew entirely from the Gaza Strip in 2005 only to see Hamas set up an authoritarian military junta, will be even further out of reach.
Mysterious Drone Strikes Destroyed Several Hangars In Syria’s Deir Ezzor
On May 23 morning, unidentified combat drones carried out a series of strikes on the outskirts of the town of al-Bukamal in southern Deir Ezzor. The government-held town is located right on the border with Iraq. According to the Naher Media, a local pro-opposition news blog, the strikes destroyed a number of newly-built hangars in al-Hamdan desert. The strikes didn’t result in any human losses. Liwa Fatemiyoun and Liwa Zainebiyoun, Afghan and Pakistani armed groups supported by the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, are known to be active in al-Hamdan. Iranina-backed Iraqi forces are also present in nearby areas. The strikes claims are yet to be confirmed by the Syrian Ministry of Defense of the state-run news agency. Usually, Damascus acknowledges any strikes inside its territory. A day earlier, an unidentified combat drone targeted a pickup vehicle to the east of al-Bukamal, inside Iraqi territory. Israel and the US were both blamed by Iraqi sources. No casualties were reported.

Single rocket hits near Iraqi air base hosting US troops
A single rocket struck close to a military base hosting US troops in western Iraq on Monday without causing any injuries, a spokesman for the US-led coalition said. The rocket struck near Ain Al-Asad air base, a sprawling complex in Anbar province, at 1:35 p.m., Col. Wayne Marotto said on Twitter. He said damages were being assessed and an investigation was launched. An Iraqi security official said the rocket struck close to a village outside the base. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations. Rocket and missile attacks against US installations have been frequent since a Washington-directed strike against top Iranian general Qassim Soleimani outside Baghdad airport last year. That operation also killed powerful Iraqi militia leader Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis. The attacks have continued since US President Joe Biden assumed office this year.

Blast at Iran explosives plant injures 9
Nine people were injured in an explosion at the Sepahan Nargostar chemical and fireworks factory in the city of Shahin Shahr in Iran’s Isfahan Province on Saturday night, Iranian media reported Sunday. The cause of the blast was said to be under investigation. The explosion took place at about 3:36 a.m. local time (2:06 a.m. Israel time), IRNA reported. The Iran Aircraft Manufacturing Industrial Company (HESA), which produces a variety of aircraft for Iranian and pro-Iranian forces, is located in Shahin Shahr, sparking speculation on social media that the explosion was related to it. The blast actually took place at HESA and not at the explosives factory, The Guardian reported later on Sunday. The explosion was linked to the shooting down of a drone by Israel near the Jordanian border last year, the report said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was an Iranian drone sent from either Iraq or Syria. The IDF collected fragments of the destroyed aircraft for further examination. The news of the explosion comes just days after Iranian officials reported major progress in negotiations on renewing the Iran nuclear deal. Last year, a series of explosions and fires hit industrial sites across Iran, including a number of petrochemical plants.

Afghan Forces, Taliban Clash Near Capital
Afghan forces clashed with Taliban fighters in a provincial capital about 120 kilometres (75 miles) from Kabul, officials and witnesses said, prompting the defence minister to take charge of a counteroffensive. Violence has soared in Afghanistan since US forces began their final pull-out on May 1, as the insurgents press on with a campaign to seize new territory. Fierce fighting erupted late Sunday on the edge of Mihtarlam, a city of around 140,000 people and the capital of Laghman province. The ministry said at least 50 Taliban fighters were killed in overnight fighting. Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told AFP the insurgents captured 37 security checkpoints on the outskirts of the city. In recent days the insurgents have seized the districts of Nerkh and Jalraiz in the province of Wardak, just 40 km from Kabul. The Taliban also captured Burka in northern Baghlan province earlier this month after government troops withdrew from the area. The Taliban campaign has spurred speculation the militants are waiting for the Americans to complete their withdrawal before launching all-out assaults on Afghan cities.

Rare protests in Oman over jobs draw massive police response
Scattered protests in Oman over layoffs and poor economic conditions have drawn a massive police presence in at least one city in the sultanate, with protesters throwing stones at one point and police firing tear gas. Videos posted to social media showed several dozen Omanis in the city of Sohar trailed by a long line of riot police vehicles on Monday. Other images appear to showed a line of police in riot gear near a government labour office in the city, 200km (125 miles) northwest of the capital, Muscat. Similar scattered protests on Sunday brought another mass police presence, activists said online. That demonstration was acknowledged by Oman’s labour ministry in a tweet, which said it was aware of people gathering there to try to “find new job vacancies and to solve the problems of those who were fired”. The demonstrations mark the first major unrest for Sultan Haitham bin Tariq, who took over in January 2020 after the death of the long-ruling Sultan Qaboos bin Said.

Apples-to-apples, consumer price inflation nowadays is running close to the high inflation readings of the late 1970s. That should be a red flag for policymakers as monetary decisions are focused on actual outcomes, not forecasted. But reported inflation statistics do not show the 1970s inflation-style inflation because they no longer include actual house prices. The old consumer price index included house prices in measuring the owner’s housing cost, whereas the present-day price index base owners’ housing cost on an arbitrary, non-market rent measure. The only way to make a price series strictly comparable over time is to use the same measurement process. In April, the median price for existing homes increased 20.3% in the past twelve months, a new record and far above the 1970s high-reading of 17.4%. More importantly, the increase in existing house prices is ten times greater than the 2% increase in non-market rents in the consumer price index.

‘Black fungus’ declared an epidemic in Jammu & Kashmir as India battles deadly infection
Jammu and Kashmir has become the latest union territory in India to declare black fungus an epidemic, as cases of the coronavirus-linked infection continue to rise. The territory declared mucormycosis – more commonly known as “black fungus” – to be an epidemic on Monday under the Epidemic Diseases Act of 1897. The move makes it mandatory for health officials to report suspected cases to the national health department. Jammu and Kashmir follow in the footsteps of several other states and territories – including Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Gujarat, Chandigarh, Telangana, and Rajasthan – which also declared an epidemic after the Indian government called on local governments to do so on Thursday. Black fungus spreads through the bloodstream and respiratory system via cuts and inhalation and can cause facial swelling and black lesions, with a fatality rate of around 54%. The Union Health Ministry has warned that the infection is leading to “prolonged morbidity and mortality” among those with Covid-19, and health experts believe that the rise in cases is attributable to the steroids used for recovering Covid-19 patients, as well as a lack of sanitation. Nearly 9,000 cases of black fungus have been recorded in India, according to Federal Minister Sadananda Gowda, while reports say more than 250 people have died.

Extreme heat forms across Arabian Peninsula after record Russian heatwave
Extreme heat has now developed across the Arabian Peninsula following a record heatwave across the Russian Arctic earlier this week. Temperatures are reaching nearly 50 °C (122 °F) and are expected to spread further east towards Pakistan and northwest India this week. Days after a record heatwave spread across the Arctic region, more extreme heat has developed further south across the Middle East and the Arabian Peninsula. On May 18, 2021, the Russian capital Moscow smashed heat temperature records over 100 years old as the city saw 29.2 C (84.6 °F), beating the previous record set in 1897. The historic temperature came after the city also broke the May 17, with 30.4 °C (85.7 °F) beating the past record of 30 °C (86 °F) set in 1897. The rest of European Russia also saw dozens of heat records, with temperatures averaging 7 to 14 °C (12.6 to 25.5 °F) higher than the usual. On May 20, an unprecedented maximum temperature of 31.9 °C (89.4 °F) was reported from the station Naryan-Mar, north of the Arctic Circle in Russia. It broke the previous May record of 27.8 °C (82 °F), with the all-time highest temperature being 33.9 °C (93 °F) set in July 1990. Extreme heat has now spread across the Middle East, the Caucasus, and the Arabian Peninsula, with numerous weather stations having maximum temperatures between 46 and 49 °C (114.8 and 120 °F), peaking nearly 50 °C (122 °F) over the past few days across Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, Oman, UAE, and Kuwait.
