Report: Hamas coordinated Gaza war with Iran, Hezbollah in joint military room
Senior leaders of the Gaza Strip-ruling Hamas terrorist organization and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad (PIJ) worked reportedly in close coordination with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and the Hezbollah to discuss military operations during the 11 days of fighting with Israel. The editor-in-chief of the Lebanese daily Al-Akhbar, Ibrahim Al-Amin, said during an interview with Hezbollah-operated Al-Manar TV that the IRGC, Hezbollah and Hamas set up a joint military operations room in Beirut during the May hostilities in Israel and the Gaza Strip. The channel’s report said that Al-Amin claimed “officers from Hezbollah, IRGC, and Hamas coordinated the military confrontation in Gaza” and “the Commander of IRGC’s Al-Quds Force, General Esmail Qaani, visited Lebanon twice to attend the chamber meetings.”

Hamas willing to hold ‘immediate negotiations’ with Israel on prisoner swap
Hamas Gaza governor Yahya Sinwar says the terror group is ready for “immediate negotiations” to reach a prisoner exchange with Israel. Sinwar makes the comments following a meeting with Egyptian intelligence chief Abbas Kamel. Hamas holds two Israeli civilians captive — Hisham al-Sayed and Avner Mengistu — as well as the bodies of two Israeli soldiers — Hadar Goldin and Oron Shaul. Israeli officials have said they will condition allowing the reconstruction of Gaza to go forward on progress in reaching a deal with Hamas that secures the return of the two captives and the two bodies. Hamas has consistently said it rejects tying rebuilding Gaza after the recent hostilities to a deal with Israel on the matter.

Iran presses Houthis to step up drone attacks on Saudi Arabia
U.S. monitoring Iranian warships that may be headed to Venezuela
Iran, bolstered by its increased unmanned aerial capabilities through encouraging Hamas to try to strike Israel with them from Gaza, after it flew a UAV into northern Israel on May 18 and when it used one in April to attack a CIA hangar in northern Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, has now celebrated new Houthi drone attacks on Saudi Arabia. The Iran-backed drone war is now threatening or has involved Syria, Iraq, Israel, Yemen and other states in the region. Iran’s major drone contribution has been to Yemen, where it supplied expertise and equipment, such as gyroscopes and other specialist parts, to aid an indigenous industry for UAV manufacturing. “According to Fars News Agency’s International Group, Brig.-Gen. Yahya Sari, the official spokesman for the [Houthi] Yemeni Armed Forces, announced that King Khalid Air Base was once again targeted by a Yemeni drone,” an Iranian report said Monday. Meanwhile, The U.S. national security community is monitoring two Iranian naval vessels whose ultimate destination may be Venezuela, according to three people familiar with the situation, in what would be a provocative move at a tense moment in U.S.-Iran relations. U.S. officials do not know for sure the destination of the Iranian ships, these officials said, but believe they may be ultimately headed for Venezuela. The mere presence of Iranian warships in America’s backyard would represent a challenge to U.S. authority in the region — and would likely inflame the debate in Washington over President Joe Biden’s decision to re-open negotiations with Tehran.

Colombia protests: Duque sends military to Cali
Mayor of Colombia’s Cali reports 13 deaths, says many were possibly protest-related
The Colombian army has begun to tighten its control over the city of Cali following weeks of deadly anti-government protests there. Streets are reported to be largely deserted after President Iván Duque ordered the military intervention. Speaking at a news conference in Cali, Mr Duque said he was sending in the “maximum deployment of military assistance” to the police. “This deployment will almost triple our capacity in less than 24 hours throughout the state, ensuring assistance as well at critical points, where we have seen acts of vandalism, violence and low-intensity urban terrorism,” he said. At least five people died in Cali on Friday night, the latest casualties in a month of protests which have claimed dozens of lives. The protests began in April over a proposed tax increase. The tax plan was withdrawn but the protests grew to cover police violence, poverty and Colombia’s health crisis. Two weeks of negotiations between the government and protesters have stalled. The military intervention includes several other areas of the country. Demonstrators in the capital, Bogotá, said they would return to the streets on Sunday to call for a halt to police violence.

The Worst-Kept Secret in America: High Inflation Is Back
Prices expected to continue rising this summer
To most people, “inflation” signifies widespread rising prices. Economists have long argued, as a matter of technical accuracy, that “inflation” denotes an increasing money supply. Frankly, though, most people don’t care what happens to the supply of money, but they care a lot about the prices they pay, so I’ll focus primarily on the numerous rapidly rising prices Americans are paying today. Following are several examples of the current inflation: Corn, soybeans, and wheat have been trading at multi-year highs, with corn having risen from around $3.80 per bushel in January 2020 to approximately $6.75 now. Chicken wings are at all-time record highs. It is getting more expensive to eat. Copper prices have risen to an all-time high. Steel, too, recently traded at prices 35% above the previous all-time set in 2008. Perhaps most famously, the price of lumber has nearly quadrupled since the beginning of 2020 and has nearly doubled just since January. Naturally, with raw materials prices soaring, prices of manufactured goods are jumping, too. That is especially noticeable in the housing market, where the median price of existing homes rose to $329,100 in March—a whopping 17.2% increase from a year earlier. The cost of driving is soaring, too. According to J.D. Power, cited in The Wall Street Journal, the average used car price has risen 16.7% and new car prices have risen 9.6% since January. The CPI, excluding food and energy, rose “only” 0.9% in March. That doesn’t sound like much, but it was the biggest one-month increase since 1981 when, for those of you too young to remember, annual inflation was 10.32%. As for the Producer Price Index (PPI), which generally precedes increases in consumer prices, it is increasing at the highest rate since 2010, according to the Department of Labor. Today’s inflation is already problematical. A higher cost of living falls hardest on the poorest Americans. Given the present uncertainty about future prices, numerous businesses are struggling to determine how much to produce, and thus are more likely to over-produce or under-produce. Furthermore, if inflation causes foreigners to lose confidence in the dollar, there could be an exodus from the dollar that could end its status as the principal global reserve currency, thereby triggering an even steeper decline in the dollar’s purchasing power.

Brazil on drought alert, faces worst dry spell in 91 years
West Coast, Midwest Water Supplies Dwindle
Brazil’s government agencies warned of droughts this week as the country faces its worst dry spell in 91 years, increasing fears of energy rationing, hitting hydroelectric power generation and agriculture while raising the risk of Amazon fires. Late on Thursday, the Electricity Sector Monitoring Committee (CMSE), which is linked to Brazil’s Mines and Energy Ministry, recommended that the water regulator ANA recognize a state of “water scarcity,” after a prolonged drought hit Central and Southern parts of Brazil along the Paraná river basin. Separately, a weather monitoring agency linked to the Agriculture Ministry issued its first “emergency drought alert” for June to September, saying rains are likely to remain scarce in five Brazilian states during that period. The lack of rain across much of Brazil has negative implications for grain cultivation, livestock and electricity generation, as Brazil relies heavily on hydro dams for its power. The dry weather could lead to severe fires in the Amazon rainforest and Pantanal wetlands, scientists said.

A newly discovered asteroid designated 2021 KN2 flew past Earth at a distance of 0.38 LD / 0.00097 AU (145 109 km / 90 167 miles) at 02:14 UTC on May 31, 2021. This is the 58th known asteroid to fly past Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the 7th so far this month. 2021 KN2 was first observed at Tokyo-Kiso, Japan on May 30, one day before its close approach. The asteroid belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 5 and 11 m (16.4 – 36 feet). Meanwhile, asteroid designated 2021 KO2 flew past Earth at a distance of 0.96 LD / 0.00248 AU (371 002 km / 230 530 miles) from the center of our planet on May 30, 2021. This is the 59th known asteroid to fly past Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the 8th so far this month. The object was first observed at Tokyo-Kiso, Japan on May 30, just a few hours before its close approach. 2021 KO2 belongs to the Aten group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 6.6 and 15 m (21.6 – 49.2 feet). The object flew past us at 04:01 UTC at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 15.01 km/s.

Historic rainfall hits New Zealand, causing severe flooding
Hundreds of residents in north Canterbury in New Zealand have been evacuated amid severe flooding fuelled by a one-in-100-year heavy rain over the weekend. According to NIWA, the rainfall was 200 to 400 percent of normal for the month of May, causing rivers to rise and flood. A state of emergency has been declared on Sunday, May 30, 2021, as flooding threatened thousands of homes. The New Zealand MetService has issued a rare Red Warning for Heavy Rain for the Canterbury region prior to the deluge. “This is only the second red warning issued by MetService [for the Canterbury region] and this will be a significant weather event,” the service said in a statement. Heavy rains began soaking the region on Saturday, May 29, causing rivers to rapidly rise, damaging roads and bridges, and flooding many properties. About 300 people have been forced to evacuate in Waimakariri and Timaru, while thousands of others in Ashburton were advised to prepare in case they need to flee.
