Seismic monitoring sensors sent to western Alaska

NOME, Alaska — Scientists comprising a “rapid response” team have been sent to two communities in western Alaska to get earthquake monitoring equipment in the ground.

KNOM reports (http://is.gd/zSGlsI) this is in response to two recent earthquakes on the western side of the Brooks Range, an area that doesn’t usually experience seismic activity.

A series of small earthquakes and aftershocks were recorded Saturday several dozen miles northeast of the 500-strong community of Noatak. The strongest was magnitude 5.5. This came on top of a 5.6 earthquake in the same area last month.

The monitoring equipment is being installed in Noatak and Kotzebue. The Alaska Earthquake Information Center says the equipment will help seismologists study aftershocks and possibly determine why these earthquakes are happening where they are. http://www.adn.com/2014/05/08/3460636/seismic-monitoring-sensors-sent.html

 Headline: Small quake rumbles in Los Angeles area

 A small earthquake was widely felt around the Los Angeles area but officials say there have been no immediate reports of serious damage. The U.S. Geological survey says the magnitude 3.3 temblor struck at 11:39 p.m. PDT Wednesday and was centered near Cudahy, a few miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Scientists Create 1st Living Organism From Artificial DNA

WEDNESDAY, May 7, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Move over, Frankenstein! Your 21st-century counterpart has just been announced. In true sci-fi fashion, a team of researchers from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in La Jolla, Calif., has created a brand-new bacteria based on a genetic structure found nowhere on Earth.  According to lead researcher Floyd Romesberg, the feat involved artificially engineering a unique combination of DNA material — a combination not found in any living creature — and then successfully inserting it into a living cell that usually contains only natural combinations of DNA. “Life on Earth in all its diversity is encoded by only two pairs of DNA bases, A-T and C-G,” Romesberg explained in an institute news release. “And what we’ve made is an organism that stably contains those two plus a third, unnatural pair of bases.”  “This shows that other solutions to storing [genetic] information are possible,” he added, “and, of course, takes us closer to an expanded-DNA biology that will have many exciting applications — from new medicines to new kinds of nanotechnology.”  Romesberg and his colleagues discuss their handiwork — funded in part by the U.S. National Institutes of Health — in the May 7 online edition of Nature.
