The Palestine Liberation Organization is threatening to withdraw recognition of Israel, its most senior peace negotiator told an Arab newspaper on Thursday. Saeb Erekat, who recently took over as secretary-general of the PLO, is quoted by Al-Quds al-Arabi as saying that a decision on reversing recognition of Israel – which was enshrined in a 1993 exchange of letters between the respective Israeli and Palestinian leaders at the time, Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat – will be made after PA President Mahmoud Abbas completes a round of consultations with Arab leaders this month. Prior to the signing of the Oslo Accords, the PLO had refused to recognize Israel since the Zionist state was founded in 1948.
Abbas is due to meet with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi on Sunday before continuing to Saudi Arabia, where a conference of Arab League foreign ministers is scheduled to convene next week. Erekat’s remarks contradict a recent statement made by Abbas during a meeting with a group of Dutch Jews in Holland last week. “We never said we were going to cancel the Oslo Accords,” Abbas said Friday during a meeting near The Hague with members of the Center for Information and Documentation on Israel, or CIDI, Dutch Jewry’s main pro-Israel advocacy organ and watchdog on anti-Semitism. “We are not going to cancel, we will not cancel anything,” he added, as long as “Israel respects its obligations.”

Headline: Muslim council calls to ban all Jews from Temple Mount
The Muslim council of clerics in Jerusalem has issued a call to entirely ban all Jewish presence from the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism. The announcement specifically called to return the situation at the Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount to as it was before the 1967 Six Day War, when Israel liberated the holy site from Jordanian occupation that had lasted from the 1948 War of Independence. Ironically, the announcement read: “the Muslims want Al-Aqsa Mosque to be returned to the situation before 1967, when it was liberated from all occupation and under the rule of the Arabs and the Muslims, since it belongs only to the Muslims.” “The Islamic department of holy sites is the one that determined who was allowed to enter and exit from among the non-Muslim visitors,” wrote the council in apparent nostalgia to the days of completely unmitigated discrimination when Jews were forbidden from the site. “The Muslims demand to have the key of the Mughrabi Gate returned to them, after it was seized by the occupation army and currently serves for aggressive invasions,” they added, in reference to the sole gate to the Temple Mount where non-Muslims are currently allowed to enter from.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is to leave for Washington on Sunday in hopes of securing a decade long, $5 billion a year military aid package to help Israel defend itself against Iran and other regional threats. On Monday, US President Barack Obama plans to host Netanyahu at the White House for their first face-toface meeting in a year.
The interim 12 months have been most acrimonious in the seven-year relationship between the two leaders, whose perceived personal dislike has been elevated to the level of diplomatic legend. Netanyahu and Obama exchanged continuous barbs over the Iran deal to curb Tehran’s nuclear weapons, which the prime minister believes to be an historic mistake that only strengthens Iran’s military and atomic capacity. But now that the deal is in place, the Obama-Netanyahu meeting is intended to heal some of that rift and to focus on the day after, by looking at a way the two long-standing allies can strengthen their military cooperation. “This will be a crucial meeting [between] our two administrations,” an Israeli official said.

Four Israelis were wounded in three separate West Bank terror attacks on Friday, while another attack was averted when the perpetrator was shot dead. An Israeli was stabbed near Sha’ar Binyamin, two were shot near Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs, another was shot near Hebron, and a Palestinian 72-year-old widow was shot dead when she tried to run soldiers over with a car. In the latest attack, an Israeli was shot and seriously wounded at Beit Einun junction north of Hebron on Friday evening. Two Israelis were shot and wounded by gunfire near Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs less than two hours earlier. The victims included a 16-year-old who was moderately wounded. It was the third security incident of the day. IDF troops entered Palestinian neighborhoods surrounding the city’s Jewish enclave in search of the cell that committed the shooting. The two teenagers, aged 16 and 18, were at the Cave of the Patriarchs compound on their way to Shabbat prayers at the tomb. They were there because the weekend was part of the special ten days a year in which the entire site is open to Jewish worshipers and only to them. (The site is normally divided into sections for Muslim and Jewish worshipers, and is also open only to Muslim worshipers on ten other days.) At least 4,000 Jews arrived on Friday, more than four times the number of Jews who live in Hebron’s Jewish enclave. According to a preliminarily report, the incident involved sniper fire from a Palestinian neighborhood overlooking the holy site. A 40-year-old Israeli was stabbed and seriously wounded earlier in the day, with the attacker fleeing and sending police on the chase. Half an hour earlier, an elderly widow attempted to run soldiers over with a car. Israel said the woman’s husband had been declared a terrorist and killed by IDF fire in the first intifada.

Two mosques at a sensitive Jerusalem holy site will be exempt from monitoring by security cameras, Jordan’s king said Thursday, in an apparent attempt to allay Palestinian concerns about his plan to install the cameras inside the hilltop compound. Also Thursday, Palestinians gave a hero’s welcome to Mohammed Allan, who had staged an unprecedented 66-day hunger strike over the summer, in protest of his one-year detention by Israel without charge. He finished his jail term and was released on Wednesday. The compound has been at the epicenter of current Israeli-Palestinian violence. Jordan, the custodian of the site, last month proposed security camera monitoring in efforts to defuse tensions. Israel welcomed the plan but the idea was met by Palestinian criticism. Although Israel and Jordan initially said cameras would be installed within days, the plan now appears delayed, with Jordan’s King Abdullah II saying they wouldn’t be in place for some six weeks. “To be very clear, there will be no cameras inside the mosque,” Abdullah said. The plan to introduce cameras at the site was suggested by Jordan and announced by US Secretary of State John Kerry during a diplomatic push last month to quell the violence.
Israel praised the idea, saying it would help counter the Palestinian claims that it is trying to change the status quo. But the Palestinians said Israel would use the cameras to spy on and arrest people.

Headline: Lebanon car bomb at Syria border kills 9
A roadside car bomb killed at least nine people and wounded four others in northeast Lebanon on Thursday, in an area close to the Syrian border where violence has spilled over from the war next door, security sources said. The blast ripped through a commercial area of the Sabil neighborhood of the town of Arsal. Emergency services were working to rescue people from the rubble, local media said. Militants linked to the conflict across the border in Syria have carried out attacks in and around Arsal in the past. Security sources said the blast was likely to have targeted an independent religious society made up of Syrian scholars. The head of the society, Sheikh Othman Mansour, was among the dead, the sources said. Lebanon’s National News Agency said the society had been involved in negotiations for the release of Lebanese soldiers still being held by militants after being captured when fighters overran Arsal last year.

The current wave of Palestinian attacks should receive “all kinds of support,” Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said Friday, praising the attackers for “sowing fear” into the hearts of Israelis. Nasrallah, whose Shiite terror organization waged a month-long war with Israel in 2006, commended “the Palestinian intifada,” which he said “needs all the support it can get.” The Hezbollah leader made the comments during a live speech to mark “the International Conference for the Support of Palestine,” according to Al-Manar, a Hezbollah-affiliated TV network. Al-Manar said the conference is an annual event “expressing solidarity with the Palestinian cause and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination.” Nasrallah also made a direct connection between the violence and claims that Israel is seeking to change the status quo at the flashpoint Temple Mount in Jerusalem, which is holy to Jews and Muslims. “The current intifada will not succeed for now in liberating Palestine, but it can at least protect Al-Aqsa Mosque and the holy places and force the enemy government, its masters and its sponsors to steer clear of Al-Aqsa Mosque,” Nasrallah said.

Headline: Hezbollah redeploying troops to Damascus fronts
Hezbollah has been redeploying its fighters from Zabadani to the frontlines around Syria’s capital where regime forces have pressed unsuccessful offensives against rebels, according to pro-opposition media. All4Syria reported Friday that Hezbollah fighters as well as Syrian National Defense Force militiamen were redeploying “en-masse” from their positions in the mountains west of Zabadani, where Hezbollah lead a campaign against rebels from July to late September. A rebel source in the western Qalamoun border region told the outlet that the troops were headed toward battlefronts in eastern Ghouta—where the Army of Islam rebel group cut the Damascus-Homs highway northeast of Damascus—as well as Darayya, where the regime earlier in the week launched a failed bid to storm the town.

Gaza Strip officials say sea water pumped by Egypt from the Mediterranean to flood smuggling tunnels has done more damage that 20 years of Israeli bombs. Egypt began the operation a few months ago, saying it has been pumping salt water from the Mediterranean into the tunnels in an effort to halt weapons smuggling to terrorists in northern Sinai. Some 2,500 tunnels have been constructed by Palestinians since Hamas gained control of Gaza in 2007. A Palestinian official told Reuters on Oct. 4 that the flooding operation is also contaminating the wells that supply water to Gaza residents. “One cubic meter of sea water pollutes 40 cubic meters of underground water,” said Tamer al-Sleibi, water department director of the Palestinian Environment Quality Authority. Sleibi said construction of the tunnels weakened foundations of many homes in Gaza and that flooding the tunnels will make it worse. He also fears the sea water will spoil land in the area for agriculture and risk the health of Gaza residents as mosquitoes and other disease carriers breed once the water turns stagnant. Palestinian tunnel builders said told Reuters that just 20 tunnels used for the smuggling of commercial goods remain after Egypt’s flooding operation. Cigarettes are the main contraband. The tunnel builders would not say how many weapons smuggling tunnels are left.

Syria Headline: Exclusive: Chemical weapons used by fighters in Syria – sources
Chemical weapons experts have determined that mustard gas was used in a Syrian town where Islamic State insurgents were battling another group, according to a report by an international watchdog seen by Reuters. A confidential Oct. 29 report by the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), a summary of which was shown to Reuters, concluded “with the utmost confidence that at least two people were exposed to sulfur mustard” in the town of Marea, north of Aleppo, on Aug. 21. “It is very likely that the effects of sulfur mustard resulted in the death of a baby,” it said. The findings provide the first official confirmation of use of sulfur mustard, commonly known as mustard gas, in Syria since it agreed to destroy its chemical weapons stockpile, which included sulfur mustard. The report did not mention Islamic State, as the fact-finding mission was not mandated to assign blame, but diplomatic sources said the chemical had been used in the clashes between Islamic State and another rebel group taking place in the town at the time. “It raises the major question of where the sulfur mustard came from,” one source said. “Either they (IS) gained the ability to make it themselves, or it may have come from an undeclared stockpile overtaken by IS. Both are worrying options.”

Syria Headline: Russian air strikes kill 42 in ISIS-held Raqqa
Air strikes by Russian warplanes on the Syrian city of Raqqa, which is controlled by the Islamic state of Iraq and Syria militant group, killed 42 people earlier this week, including 27 civilians, monitoring group the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Friday. Fifteen ISIS fighters made up the remainder of the death toll, the Britain-based Observatory said, after a series of strikes on Tuesday that hit the group’s Syrian stronghold. The bombings add to a civilian death toll from Russian strikes, which the Syrian Network for Human Rights, another monitoring group, said on Monday stood at 254 people killed in just over a month. It was also a rare heavy Russian bombardment targeting ISIS rather than other insurgent groups. On Thursday, Russia’s airforce said it carried out strikes near ISIS-held ancient city of Palmyra for the second time this week, claiming its targets were far from Syria’s historic sites. Russian bombers “destroyed a large fortified location of Islamic State militants,” including an air-defense gun and a tank, the defense ministry said in a statement.

Syria Headline: Al Qaeda front group claims success in key Syrian town
Insurgents captured a town on a major highway in western Syria Thursday in a blow to the Russian-backed campaign against them, rebels and an activist group said. The capture of Morek was another blow to Damascus and Moscow. The town is north of the city of Hama on a major north-south highway crucial to control of western Syria. A rebel commander on the ground said Morek had been “liberated,” describing it as strategically important. “It was a center for the gathering of regime forces and a point of departure for its operations,” said Fares al-Bayoush of rebel group Fursan al-Haq Brigade, which is fighting under the Free Syrian Army banner. Another FSA commander confirmed the takeover, saying rebels would work to press north. “The next step for us is now to liberate the highway between Morek and Suran. This is where the Syrian army and its militias had retreated and where fighting has now moved,” the Al-Izza group’s Jamil Saleh said. Russian airstrikes had intensified against rebels following Morek’s capture, he said, adding that the “Russians and their planes have been a bad omen to Bashar and the militias who are with him.”

Syria Headline: Syrian Democratic Forces expel ISIS from key village south Hasakah
Backed by the U.S.-led coalition forces, the Kurdish-Arab joint alliance of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) liberated Thursday the key village of ad-Dawoodiya south of the city of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, from the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) after fierce clashes, local sources reported. Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, media activist Delovan Mohammed confirmed that the SDF was able to control the ad-Dawoodiya village after clashes with ISIS extremists. “The joint forces then headed towards the remaining ISIS-held villages in the southern countryside of Hasakah, amid preparations to storm ISIS headquarters there,” the source added. Mohammed pointed out that ad-Dawoodiya village was a strategic point in the southern countryside of Hasakah for “it is the first ISIS’ defense line south Hasakah”. In the meantime, the U.S.-led coalition bombed several fighting positions for ISIS militants in the vicinity of al-Hawl town in southern Hasakah. Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, official spokesman of the SDF Talal Silo said that their forces are coordinating with the U.S.-led coalition “in every step in the anti-ISIS operations in Hasakah”. “We have a high degree of coordination with the international coalition in every step during our battles against ISIS terrorists,” Silo said. “The air cover provided by the U.S.-led coalition facilitates our advance against the terror group on the ground.”

Iraq Headline: Iraqi officials: Baghdad blasts kill at least 6 and wound 18
Iraqi security officials say three blasts in different parts of Baghdad have killed at least six people and wounded 18. One roadside bomb targeted a residential area in north Baghdad’s Saba al-Boor neighborhood on Friday, killing three and wounding nine. In south Baghdad, police say an improvised explosive device killed two and wounded five in a meat market in Maidan. In the Tarmiya neighborhood of north Baghdad, one soldier was killed and four were wounded when a homemade bomb detonated next to an Iraqi military vehicle. Hospital officials confirmed all the casualties. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media.

Kurdish militants scrapped a month-old cease-fire in Turkey Thursday, a day after President Recep Tayyip Erdogan vowed to “liquidate” them, dashing hopes of any letup in violence in the wake of a national election. The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group said the ruling AK Party, which won back its parliamentary majority in Sunday’s election, had shown it was on a war footing with attacks launched this week. “The unilateral halt to hostilities has come to an end with the AK Party’s war policy and the latest attacks,” it said in a statement carried by the Firat news agency, which is close to the militant group, based in the mountains of northern Iraq. Erdogan, who oversaw a peace process with the PKK that collapsed in July, vowed Wednesday to continue battling the group until every last fighter was “liquidated.” Twenty people were killed in clashes with the military in the mainly Kurdish southeast Thursday, bringing this week’s death toll to more than 40. More than 40,000 people have been killed in the insurgency since it began in 1984.

Afghan officials say more than 30 members of the Daesh Takfiri militant group have been killed in a mop-up operation by Afghan security forces against the extremists in the country’s eastern province of Nangarhar. Haji Ghalib, the governor of the Achin district in the beleaguered province, said on Friday that 32 Daesh extremists had been slain in the district, located 150 kilometers (86 miles) east of the capital Kabul, the previous night during counter-terror operation. Ghalib said a radio base used by Daesh elements in Afghanistan to be in touch with fellow militants in Iraq and neighboring Syria was also destroyed in the operation. The development came a day after Colonel Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal, a spokesman for the Nangarhar provincial police department, said that 28 Daesh terrorists were killed when Afghan soldiers launched a series of operations in the Achin district. He added that eight Daesh militants were also wounded in the offensives. Nangarhar has been witnessing a rise in the number of Daesh terrorists in some of its districts in recent months.

Gunmen have kidnapped dozens of Tunisians in western Libya to demand the release of a Libyan arrested in Tunisia, families and authorities said on Thursday. With Libya caught in chaos as two rival governments struggle for control, armed groups have often kidnapped foreign nationals and even diplomats in the past to demand the release of captured Libyans overseas. Tunisia’s foreign ministry confirmed the kidnapping and said it was in contact with the Libyan authorities to try and secure the release of its nationals in the neighboring country. It did not give any details about a detained Libyan suspect. “Gunmen kidnapped my father since Sunday.. they want the release of a Libyan arrested in Tunisia,” Yosra Boubaker, the daughter of one of the detained Tunisians told local television. Meanwhile, The Russian president said his priority was to protect citizens living abroad, regardless of where they were. That could include action to safeguard Russians living in the North African state of Libya, which has been ravaged by violent Islamic extremism since the fall of dictator Colonel Gaddafi.

Headline: ISIS Praises UC Merced Attacker
An engineering student who went off on a stabbing spree Wednesday, wounding four people on the campus of U.C.-Merced before being shot and killed by police, has been identified as Faisal Mohammad. Mohammad was a freshman student residing in Santa Clara, California. After withholding the attacker’s name for more than 24 hours, the college and the local sheriff moved quickly Thursday to frame the attack as not related to terrorism. Sheriff Vern Warnke insisted the FBI looked into Mohammad’s background and family and found nothing to indicate terrorist ties. When asked about an ISIS tweet that praised Mohammad’s actions, Warnke said ISIS was most likely just taking advantage of the attacker’s “ethnic name” to instill terror, ABC News reported. Police have released almost no information about what appears to be a case of a Muslim attacker who tried to kill two students, a student counselor and a construction worker Wednesday morning. The authorities also moved quickly to scrub Mohammad’s social media sites before they released his name.

The European Union is predicting that three million more migrants could arrive in the 28-nation bloc by the end of next year. More than 700,000 people have come to Europe seeking sanctuary or jobs so far this year, overwhelming reception centres and border authorities. EU autumn economic forecasts released on Thursday say that, based on current migrant entries and a “technical assumption” about future flows, arrival rates are unlikely to slow before 2017. The EU’s executive Commission said that “overall, an additional three million persons is assumed to arrive in the EU over the forecast period.” The Commission says the refugee crisis has resulted in additional government spending, but that it could have a “small, positive impact” on European economies within a few years. It came as the UN Refugee Agency issued a winter plan that forecast up to 5,000 migrants arriving daily from Turkey between November and February. Fifty people were arrested during the mayhem and at least 10 others are being sought by police in connection with the violence. Detectives are scouring video footage on social media for the identities of suspects. The protest, which was billed as an anti-austerity march, led to some of the most violent scenes on the capital’s streets in recent months, including the burning of a police car.

The “Normandy group” of foreign ministers have met to discuss the Russia-Ukraine conflict with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov demanding implementation of the Minsk agreements be extended into 2016. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who held talks with his counterparts from France, Russia and Ukraine, said “difficult tasks” lay ahead. “We are behind in schedule and ahead of us are a few difficult tasks. The difficult tasks are especially those which affect the so called political process, meaning the preparation of elections in eastern Ukraine,” Germany’s top diplomat said. Steinmeier said it was not good enough that the Russia-backed authorities in east Ukraine were depriving people living there of humanitarian assistance. “We expressed our unhappiness that humanitarian organisations continue to have little access to eastern Ukraine and to the Donbass region, with the exception of a few, such as the International Red Cross which is admitted and can operate. Many other organisations so far are excluded.” Arseniy Yatsenyuk, Ukraine’s Prime Minister expressed frustration that Russia has not complied with the Minsk protocol. Under the terms of the Minsk ceasefire deal Russian troops must leave east Ukraine and Russia must allow Ukraine to regain control of its border before free and free elections under Ukrainian law are held. “The best way to hold free and fair elections is just to withdraw Russians, to pull back all Russian forces. Because we can’t get any kind of free and fair elections under the barrel of Russian gun, you know? So, the ceasefire is not the implementation of the Minsk deal. The ceasefire is just a precondition for full implementation of the Minsk deal. So, it’s still fragile.” The talks came as the ceasefire begins to look more and more vulnerable. Russian-backed militants are claiming the Ukrainian army fired Grad rockets several times this week. And Ukraine has reported an increase in attacks against its defensive positions in recent days.

Beijing’s Foreign Ministry said Friday that Wang Yi had made references to the maritime dispute during a phone conversation with Kerry. Wang said President Xi Jinping had achieved a series of important joint agreements with the United States during his September state visit. “The process we have in place does not want to receive unnecessary interference,” Wang had told Kerry, according to the ministry. Beijing, however, did not mention how Kerry reacted to Wang’s comments. Congress would be cut out of decisions impacting the nation’s economy and laws under the terms of an international agreement President Obama has negotiated and intends to sign. The pact also essentially moves the nation’s economy out from under the constraints of the U.S. Constitution. The administration on Thursday finally released the text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a global regulatory deal it has been negotiating in secret over the last six years. The TPP currently involves 12 countries on four continents. The text reveals the TPP agreement undermines U.S. sovereignty by establishing a secret, unaccountable TransPacific Partnership Commission with sweeping regulatory powers over 40 percent of the world’s economy. The TransPacific Partnership Commission would have the power to write rules concerning immigration, food, energy, medicine, the Internet, copyrights, patents and businesses within U.S. borders as well as across the rest of the commission’s membership. Congress would have no role in creating or approving the rules the commission writes unilaterally. A requirement that any objection to one of the commission’s decisions be made in writing within five days effectively excludes congressional input. Article 27 of the Trans-Pacific Partnership agreement creates the Trans-Pacific Partnership Commission made up of officials appointed by each member country. The commission will have broad powers, not only for the “implementation or operation” of the agreement and to interpret the terms of the pact but also to “amend or modify” the pact.

The Belgian post office, Bpost, announced that next year it will release a stamp featuring Belgian faith leaders, including the country’s chief rabbi Albert Guigui. The stamp, which will bear the slogan, “Everybody equal, everybody different,” is aimed at promoting unity and tolerance. Rabbi Guigui, who leads the congregation at the Great Synagogue of Europe in Brussels, told The Times of Israel that last November he was invited to appear on the stamp together with Imam Khalid Benhaddou from Ghent and the Bishop of Antwerp Johan Bonny. The three were photographed standing close together and clasping hands in Antwerp by Flemish photographer Lieve Blancquaert. “The stamp is meant to show that in Belgium, despite what is happening and what people hear in the news, there are good relations between faiths. The photo shows us holding hands, united and working together,” said Guigui, who is 70 years old and has been chief rabbi of Belgium for the past 30 years. The rabbi thinks that a stamp can be an effective means of promoting tolerance.

The number of Americans outside the labor force in October — due to retirement, schooling, discouragement or otherwise — declined slightly compared to September’s figures when a record 94,610,000 Americans were not participating. Although the October tally of Americans outside the workforce did not continue the record breaking trend of earlier months, last month’s participation rate remained the same as September’s rate at 62.4 percent — a 38 year low.

One in five confirmed cases is among children. Health officials, including Hawkins, are concerned that the disease – which can lead to death by dehydration and kidney failure within hours if left untreated – will soon become a regional epidemic. As millions of Shiite Muslims prepare to visit Iraq in December for Arbaeen – a ritual marking the end of an annual mourning period for the Prophet Mohammad’s grandson Hussein – UNICEF is working with clerics in the Shiite shrine cities of Najaf and Kerbala to distribute information on how to guard against cholera. The Iraq outbreak has been traced to a number of causes, among them low water levels in the Euphrates and winter flooding that has contaminated the river and shallow wells with sewage water.

They are designed to encourage landlords and hospitals to treat gay couples the same way as married ones. However, the documents do not provide the same legal status as marriage. BBC Tokyo correspondent Rupert Wingfield-Hayes says campaigners are welcoming “a small step forward in a deeply conservative country”. Younger people in Japan generally support gay rights but the prime minister has previously urged caution over changing the law. The certificates are at best a symbolic step forward and have no legal teeth to prevent discrimination. Nevertheless social attitudes towards gay and lesbian couples are slowly starting to change here. An opinion survey published by Japan’s Mainichi newspaper recently showed 44% of people now support same-sex marriage while 39% are opposed.

One person has died in the recent spate of flooding in Alexandria. Local authorities in Alexandria declared Thursday 05 November 2015 an official day off to give the city time to recover from the flooding once again. Alexandria experienced severe flooding in late October 2015, where at least 6 people died. The October 2015 floods led to the resignation of Governor Hani El-Mesery after criticism of his administration’s lack of preparation and management of the city’s drainage system. Around 100 people have been evacuated from their homes after flooding in Beheira. State-run Ahram news report that at least 11 people have died in floods and weather related incidents in Beheira, with several others injured. Eight people drowned in Wadi al-Natroun, another fatality occurred in El-Rahamnia, and two people were killed by lightning strike in Abu Hommos district.
