Headline: Hamas Calls for Armed Warfare in Jerusalem
Headline: Senior Hamas Official: Time Ripe for 3rd Intifada
A senior Hamas official Saturday called on Palestinian Arabs to take up arms to “defend” Al-Aqsa Mosque on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, calling for a further escalation in violent Arab riots at the site in which explosives have been throw at police. “The only solution to defend the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to prevent Israelis from carrying out their plans there is for West Bank and Jerusalem residents to take up arms,” Mahmoud Zahar said in an interview posted on the terror organization’s website. For the past several weeks amid the Jewish holidays of Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and Sukkot, Arab terrorists have been launching a wave of terror attacks, which have included planned attacks at the Temple Mount, the holiest site in Judaism. Those attacks have also included a lethal rock attack in Jerusalem, and just last Thursday night Fatah terrorists gunned down a young couple in front of their four children outside Itamar in Samaria. “Until now weapons have only served to protect the settlers and the occupiers,” said Zahar, whose terror group holds de facto control of Gaza. “But we should not forget the West Bank has great human resources that can be mobilized at any moment.” “The image of Palestinians from the West Bank and Jerusalem throwing stones and Molotov cocktails has dealt a blow to the occupier,” he said.

Headline: Terrorist Shoots at Jerusalem Sukkah
Two Israeli men, one in his 40s and the other in his 20s, died of their wounds Saturday night after being stabbed in Jerusalem’s Old City in a terror attack. The younger man’s wife was in serious condition and their two-year-old baby was lightly wounded. The mother was taken to Hadassah Hospital Ein Kerem and was undergoing surgery. The toddler was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center for treatment where he remained in stable condition. The men were stabbed in the upper body and were unconscious when paramedics arrived at the scene. The father was taken to Hadassah Hospital Mount Scopus where he died of his wounds shortly after the attack. The second man was taken to Shaare Zedek Medical Center where he also died Saturday night. When the attack began, the injured woman managed to run and alert a group of Border Police forces nearby who arrived on the scene and shot and killed the attacker. The terrorist was identified as Muhannad Shafeq Halabi, 19, from al-Bireh, near Ramallah in the West Bank. Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack, while Hamas issued a statement praising the “heroic operation.”

Headline: Palestinian Islamic Jihad claims Jerusalem stabbing
A wide-scale operation may be needed to counter the recent wave of deadly terror attacks against Israelis, said Minister of Intelligence Israel Katz on Sunday. “We will toughen our measures against the Palestinians,” he said speaking to Army Radio. “There could be a need for another Operation Defensive Shield.” Operation Defensive Shield was a large military operation in Judea and Samaria in 2002, in response to the suicide attacks of the second intifada, with incursions into Ramallah, Tulkarm, Kalkilya, Bethlehem, Jenin and Nablus. The IDF put then-PLO chairman Yasser Arafat’s presidential compound in Ramallah, the Mukata, under siege and enforced strict curfews for Palestinians. Access to the Old City was limited on Sunday morning following multiple terrorist attacks in Jerusalem, according to the Police spokespersons unit. Only residents, tourists, business owners and students living in the Old City will be granted access to Jerusalem’s Old City over the next two days. Access for Muslim worshipers to the Temple Mount was also restricted to men above the age of 50 with no age limit set for women. The ordnance comes after a string of violent terrorist attacks in the West Bank and Jerusalem, further destabilizing frayed relations between Palestinians and Israelis. An Israeli teenager was stabbed in at a gas station near Jerusalem’s Old City on Sunday morning.

Headline: Palestinians clash with IDF across West Bank after multiple deadly attacks on Israelis
Headline: 13- year-old Palestinian killed in clashes with security forces
Palestinian rioters clashed with security forces in multiple locations across the West Bank on Monday, a day after two Israelis were murdered in a stabbing terror attack in Jerusalem’s Old City and three days after two Israeli parents were killed in a shooting attack on their vehicle in Samaria. A Palestinian rioter was shot and killed during a violent clash with the IDF in Tulkarm on Sunday night. According to an army spokeswoman, between 100 to 200 Palestinians who are affiliated with Hamas threw rocks and firebombs at soldiers in the Tulkarm Crossing point area. The rioters also fired fireworks at soldiers, and set tires on fire. The IDF directed live fire at three men who had hurled Molotov cocktails, striking one of the rioters, the spokeswoman said. The man died of his injuries and the army said it is investigating the incident. At Bir Zeit, a town north of Ramallah, 15 Palestinians threw rocks at soldiers, who responded with non-lethal crowd control means, and fired warning shots in the air. There were no injuries int that incident. In the settlement of Otniel, near Duma, 30 settlers blocked off a road, and spray painted a graffiti. An Israeli suffered light burns wounds to his face during that incident, the army said. The circumstances of the injury are not fully clear At Shilo Junction, 40 settlers blocked a road, and hurled rocks at Palestinian vehicles, an IDF spokeswoman said. Palestinians then arrived and hurled rocks at Israeli vehicles, damaging a car. In the Palestinian village of Khorse, southwest of Hebron, 30 Palestinians hurled Molotov cocktails and rocks at an IDF unit, which responded with non-lethal riot dispersal means. In the same area, Border Police deployed crowd control measures during a clash. The largest incident on Sunday occurred in Abu Dis, east of Jerusalem, where 250 Palestinians hurled rocks and firebombs at security forces. Security forces fired rubber bullets at the legs of rioters, striking four Palestinians who sustained wounds. Their condition is unknown.

Headline: Israeli aircraft strike Hamas terror targets in Gaza after rocket fire
After two rockets were fired from Gaza towards Israel late on Sunday night, the Israeli Air Force responded by targeting terror infrastructure belonging to Hamas in the northern part of the coastal Palestinian territory, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said. “The IDF will not tolerate such attacks from terror organizations on Israeli territory and it will continue to act firmly against any attempt to breach the quiet in the communities in the South,” an IDF statement read. The IDF said it held the Hamas terror organization responsible for the earlier rocket attacks. The Sheikh Omar Hadid Brigade, a Salafist organization affiliated with Islamic State, claimed responsibility for the rocket attack on Israel.

Headline: John Kerry: Temple Mount Must Remain ‘In the Hands of Jordan’
The Jordianian government plans to reconsider its diplomatic stance because of developments at the Temple Mount, in order to take effective action “required to stop the Israeli attacks at al-Aqsa Mosque”, Jordanian government sources told London-based newspaper al-Hayat. The sources added that there is pressure in the parliament to take more drastic steps, recalling the Jordanian ambassador from Israel – which occurred last year. The sources said Jordan’s actions will be determined by developments on the ground. “Jordan’s options for stopping the Israeli attacks are open,” said the sources, who noted that Jordan has diplomatic and legal means to put an end to what they called Israeli provocations. That said, the sources emphasized that Jordan is waiting for the end of the High Holy Days in Israel. On the weekend, the Jordanian Foreign Ministry sent a strongly-worded missive to the Israeli Embassy in Amman regarding events at the Temple Mount. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State John Kerry urged Israel and the Palestinians on Monday to demonstrate calm after violent clashes in the Old City of Jerusalem, and to “avoid further escalation.” “Regarding Jerusalem, it absolutely is unacceptable on either side to have to have violence resorted to as a solution,” Kerry said. “And I would caution everybody to be calm, not to escalate the situation and to deal with this in a way that can find quick way back to the full restoration of the status quo where the chief administration is in the hands of the government of Jordan and King Abdullah, who is the custodian,” he said, referring to the Temple Mount.

Syria Headline: Syrian crisis: Russia vows to intensify air strikes
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed on October 3 that Russian Su-34s conducted airstrikes targeting an ISIS-held “command center” near Raqqah city, northern Syria. However, local Syrian reporting did not substantiate this claim. In fact, Syrian activists released comparisons of the airstrike footage, revealing that the strike targeted the rebel-held town of Al Latamneh in Hama Province, western Syria. Syrian state-run news agency SANA also released footage of the same airstrike; however, SANA claimed the airstrike targeted the town of Jisr al-Shughour. As the Russian Ministry of Defense continues to claim airstrikes against ISIS, particularly in core ISIS-held terrain, it will remain important to distinguish the true targets and intentions of Russian military action in Syria amidst Russian disinformation.

Syria Headline: With Russia’s Dep. Army Chief due in Israel, Moscow posts 64 S-300 ship-to-air missiles off Syria, N. Israel
Russia’s deputy chief of staff, Gen. Nikolay Bogdanovsky, accompanied by a large military delegation, arrives in Israel for a two-day visit on Tuesday, Oct. 6, to discuss increased coordination between the two militaries. However, Moscow seems to be sending Jerusalem an altogether different message: Friday, Oct. 2, the Russian Defense Ministry announced the surprise deployment of Navy cruiser, the Moskva, armed with 64 advanced anti-aircraft missiles S-300 ship-to-air missiles opposite the Syrian coastal town of Latakia. debkafile’s military sources point out that Russia, without saying so publicly, has thus created an effective no-fly zone over most of Syria, most of northern Israel, including the Golan, as well as southern Turkey, for US aircraft based there for air strikes in Syria; Cyprus, the site of British air force bases; and Jordan. Since 2012, The Obama administration has been discussing the possibility of establishing no-fly zones in northern and southern Syria on a number of occasions, but has shelved the plan whenever a decision was imminent. Now, with one move, Moscow has imposed a no-fly zone over Syria. The presence of the wide-ranging S-300s means that the Turkish, British, Israeli and Jordanian air forces will need to coordinate their aerial operations in Syrian or Lebanese airspace with Russia, or face the risk of their planes being shot down. In the view of debkafile’s military sources, the only aircraft capable of evading those advanced missiles are stealth planes. Neither the Israeli, British, Jordanian or Turkish air forces, nor the US squadron in Turkey consisting of F-16 fighters, have such aircraft at their disposal. The S-300 has a range of 150 kilometers and can shoot down any type of missile, including cruise missiles, as well as planes. If US President Obama truly wanted to deal effectively with Moscow’s military moves in Syria, besides saying that Russia is bound to fail, he would have ordered the deployment of US stealth fighters to Turkey and Israel. However, may have been held back from this step by fear of antagonizing Iran, which has so far delayed sealing the nuclear agreement with the world powers by putting it to vote in parliament.

Syria Headline: Quneitra rebels take strategic hilltop
Rebel factions fighting to open a supply route through south western Syria’s Quneitra province seized a strategic hilltop over the weekend, after several other advances in the area over the past week. “Islamist factions have been able to advance and take control over the Tel Ahmar area,” the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on Sunday morning. “Two fighters from Islamist factions were killed in the ongoing fighting with regime forces and allied militants in the northern section of rural Quneitra.” “A regime forces colonel, who was the commanding officer at the position in the town of Al-Baath and the commander of operations at Tel Ahmar, was also killed.” In a later report the monitoring NGO said the commander of a rebel faction had been killed and that the Syrian air force was carrying out intensive raids on rebel held positions in the area. A further report published Monday morning said fighting in the area had continued past Sunday midnight in to the early hours.

Iraq Headline: Car bomb attacks kill 57 people in Iraq: police
At least 57 people were killed on Monday in car bomb attacks in Baghdad and the north and south of Iraq, police and medical sources said. One attack took place near a crowded market in the town of Khalis, about 80 km (50 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killing 35 people, police said. “The driver begged police to be allowed to park his vehicle in order to buy medication from a nearby pharmacy and five minutes later it (the bomb) went off and caused huge destruction,” police captain Mohammed al-Tamimi said. In the town of Al Zubair, about 15 km (9 miles) southwest of the oil town of Basra, a second attack took place also near a crowded market. Ten people died. Another car bomb exploded in the Hussainiya district of the northern outskirts of Baghdad, killing 12 people, police and medical sources said. Islamic State has previously claimed responsibility for car and suicide bombings.

Headline: Turkish jets intercept Russian plane
Turkish F-16 fighter jets were scrambled after a Russian warplane violated Turkey’s air space on Saturday, the foreign ministry said. Russia said the incident was a “navigational error” and that it has “clarified” the matter to Ankara. Turkish jets patrolling the border were also “harassed” by an unidentified plane on Sunday, Turkey said. Russia has been carrying out air strikes in Syria in support of President Bashar al-Assad. Turkey, a Nato member, has called the Russian strikes a “grave mistake”. The US Secretary of State John Kerry said: “We’re greatly concerned about it because it is precisely the kind of thing that, had Turkey responded under its rights, could have resulted in a shoot-down.” Representatives of Nato’s 28 member states will meet later to discuss the incursion into Turkey. On Monday Russia said it had “continued performing pinpoint strikes” on IS targets in Syria, carrying out 25 sorties and hitting nine Islamic State (IS) targets. Among those targets was a communications centre in Homs, and a command centre in Latakia, it said.

Headline: Conflict with US will never end, Iranian commander says
A senior Iranian military leader warned this weekend that “all U.S. military bases in the Middle East are within the range of” Iran’s missiles and emphasized that the Islamic Republic will continue to break international bans on the construction of ballistic missiles. Much of this missile work, like the details of Iran’s advanced arsenal, remains secret, according to Brigadier General Amir Ali Hajizadeh, commander of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Aerospace Force. Hajizadeh dismissed the threat of military action by the United States, warning that all U.S. assets and allies are in range of Iran’s current missile arsenal, according to comments made Sunday in Tehran and recorded by Iran’s state-controlled Fars News Agency. The threats of attack on the United States were issued as Iran unveiled new high-tech torpedoes and the formation of a joint war room along with Russia, Syria, and Iraq. “Some of the threats by the U.S. are aimed at appeasing the Zionists, while others are for the purpose of domestic consumption (in the U.S.), but what is important is that they are aware of and acknowledge our capabilities and deterrence power,” Hajizadeh was quoted as saying. “We do not feel any need to increase the range of our missiles and (our perceived enemy) targets are fully within the range of our missiles,” he added. Iran will not slow down the research and construction of advanced missiles, the IRGC leader said, despite international bans on such action.

Headline: Afghans Requested Deadly Kunduz Airstrike, U.S. Commander Says
U.S. officials have launched an investigation after 12 local staff members of Doctors Without Borders and at least seven patients, three of them children, were killed after an explosion near their hospital in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz that may have been caused by a nearby airstrike. In a statement, the international charity said the “sustained bombing” took place Saturday at 2:10 a.m local time. Afghan forces backed by U.S. airstrikes have been fighting to dislodge Taliban insurgents who overran Kunduz on Monday. At least 37 other people were seriously injured–19 staff members and 18 patients and caretakers, the organization said. Dozens were missing, raising concerns the death toll could rise. A senior defense official told Fox News on Saturday that the Taliban have been in control of the area around the hospital since Monday, guarding the building and drawing U.S. special operations forces into a firefight in the area. U.S. forces called in the airstrike because they were under fire and needed cover, the official said. Taliban fighters were among those being treated at the hospital, a defense official told Fox News. While defense officials told Fox News they “regret the loss” of innocent life, they say the incident could have been avoided if the Taliban had not used the hospital as a base, and the civilians there as human shields.

At least two explosions and gunfire were heard during the attack, which took place after nightfall. It was unclear if there were any casualties. Local media reported that power had been cut in the area and that families were being evacuated. The attack came days after the Taliban captured the northern provincial capital of Kunduz in one of its biggest military victories in 14 years of conflict.

Headline: Nigeria’s Abuja hit by blasts with at least 18 dead
A series of explosions on the outskirts of the Nigerian capital Abuja have killed at least 18 people, officials say. The first two struck Kuje township: one by a suicide bomber near a police station, the other a bomb at a market. Another bomb exploded at a bus stop in Nyanya. No group has said it carried out the attacks yet but suspicion has fallen on Boko Haram Islamists, who targeted Nyanya last year. The militants, who are fighting to carve out an Islamist state, has mostly focused their campaign on the north-east. More than 40 people were injured in the blasts on Friday night, which security officials described as co-ordinated. Explosives experts have been combing the scene for bomb fragments. Police have also stepped up stop-and-search activities in Abuja following the blasts, AFP reported. Nigeria’s President, Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power vowing to eradicated Boko Haram, condemned the attack. “My heart goes out to the families of the dead and injured in Abuja, and other parts of the country. Our will cannot be broken; evil will never triumph over good. We will be rid of this evil stalking our land,” he tweeted. Some 17,000 people are said to have been killed since Boko Haram began its insurgency in 2009.

Yemeni security officials say at least 55 fighters have been killed and more than 100 injured in battles in Marib province, a key front in the fighting against Shiite Houthi rebels. The officials, who remain neutral in the conflict that has splintered the country, say most of the casualties were caused by airstrikes and artillery. They say fighters loyal to Yemen’s government gained ground near the Marib dam and several other strategic areas. The pro-government fighters are advancing toward Sirwah, a main Houthi stronghold in the province. They are ultimately aiming for the rebel-controlled capital Sanaa, east of Marib. The Houthi media center said their forces repelled “mercenary attacks,” killing dozens of opposing fighters. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to reporters.

Headline: Officials reach Trans-Pacific Partnership deal; faces tough fight in Congress
The United States and 11 Pacific Rim nations agreed Monday on the Trans-Pacific Partnership — a historic, international deal backed by President Obama that continues to create divisions on both ends of the U.S. political spectrum. Negotiators took nearly six years to complete the deal, which if ratified is projected to impact 40 percent of the global economy. The deal was reached after a weekend of negotiations in Atlanta. “We think it helps define the rules of the road for the Asia-Pacific region,” said U.S. Trade Representative Michael Froman, adding that negotiators had been working on the deal as late as 5 a.m. Monday morning. The deal is designed to encourage trade between the United States, Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam. It would eliminate tariffs that are considered barriers to trade, including more than 18,000 imposed on U.S. exports, according to the White House. The deal still has to be approved by Congress, amid widespread opposition from Democrats concerned about job loss and suspicion among Republicans about Obama’s team having negotiated a bad deal. The president must wait 90 days before signing the pact, and only then will Congress begin the voting process, which could push the vote date well into 2016. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., warned Monday that the deal would face “intense scrutiny” on Capitol Hill. “The Trans-Pacific Partnership is potentially one of the most significant trade deals in history,” he also said. “But serious concerns have been raised on a number of key issues.” The deal is likely to become a fiery issue in the 2016 presidential race.

Headline: 7.5m going hungry as Ethiopia crisis worsens
The number of hungry Ethiopians needing food aid has risen sharply due to poor rains and the El Nino weather phenomenon with around 7.5 million people now in need, aid officials said Friday. That number has nearly doubled since August, when the United Nations said 4.5 million were in need — with the UN now warning that without action some “15 million people will require food assistance” next year, more than inside war-torn Syria. “Without a robust response supported by the international community, there is a high probability of a significant food insecurity and nutrition disaster,” the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA, said in a report. The UN children’s agency, Unicef, warns over 300,000 children are severely malnourished. The Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), which makes detailed technical assessments of hunger, predicted a harvest “well below average” in its latest report. “Unusual livestock deaths continue to be reported,” FEWS NET said. “With smaller herds, few sellable livestock, and almost no income other than charcoal and firewood sales, households are unable to afford adequate quantities of food.”

Headline: Norovirus outbreak affects hundreds of Nevada students, teachers
A norovirus outbreak in 11 northern Nevada schools has sickened hundreds of young children and some teachers, officials said. The Washoe County Health District said it believes the norovirus outbreak first started on Sept. 16 at a Reno elementary school, where 150 students and 11 staff members have reported symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramping. As of Friday, the Washoe County School District reported that the outbreak had spread to 9 other elementary schools, a high school and some associated daycare centers. It has been centered in Reno, with one Sparks elementary school. No one has died or been hospitalized by the latest outbreaks. Most of the nearly 400 people affected have been elementary school children. The high school teachers who were sickened also traced their illnesses to the affected elementary school kids, whom they were related to. “Elementary school kids, younger kids probably aren’t the best when it comes to hygiene,” said Phil Ulibarri, a county health department spokesman. The bacteria and viruses that cause the illness can be airborne, entering the body through the mouth.

The Guatemalan authorities say the number of people killed when a hillside collapsed on houses in the village of El Cambray, 15km (nine miles) outside the capital, has risen to 73. They said another 350 people were still believed to be missing under tonnes of rock and earth that slipped onto homes on Thursday night. Rescue teams were using dogs to try to reach people trapped under the rubble. A morgue has been set up with some burials already taking place. A government spokesperson, Julia Barrera, said they had managed to rescue 26 people so far. More than a thousand rescue workers are working at the disaster site deploying earth movers and sniffer dogs. A spokesman for the Guatemalan emergency services, CONRED, Julio Sanchez said the United States and Mexico had offered help but were asked to remain on standby. He said Guatemala was following international protocols that advocated search and rescue procedures for 72 hours after a disaster of this kind. Rescue workers could be seen calling out to those trapped under the soil and listening intently for replies or movement.
