Headline:     Trump mulls Middle East peace conference

Headline:     Top Trump adviser Greenblatt to meet today with Netanyahu, Abbas

US President Donald Trump is mulling the option to hold a peace conference in the Middle East in an effort to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, after speaking on Friday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. Friday’s 10-minute phone call was the first between Trump and Abbas since the former took office. “The president emphasized his personal belief that peace is possible and that the time has come to make a deal,” the White House said. Trump underscored that such a peace agreement must be negotiated directly between the two parties and that the United States will work closely with Palestinian and Israeli leadership to make progress toward that goal, the statement said. The White House said in a statement that the two leaders on Friday discussed ways to advance peace throughout the Middle East, including a comprehensive agreement that would end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. “The president noted that such a deal would not only give Israelis and Palestinians the peace and security they deserve, but that it would reverberate positively throughout the region and the world,” the White House clarified.  In a statement made by the Palestinian authority, Trump is stated to have said that “it is time we end the suffering which lasted for 70 years.” Abbas responded that they are “committed to peace, as a strategic achievement in an overall effort to found a Palestinian state alongside Israel.”

Headline:  Palestinian marchers seek Abbas resignation over Israel ties

Several hundred Palestinians marched in an anti-government protest Monday, calling for the resignation of President Mahmoud Abbas and criticizing his security coordination with Israel. Separately, Palestinian journalists staged a sit-in nearby to protest the violent dispersal of an anti-government protest by Palestinian riot police a day earlier. In Sunday’s incident, helmeted troops beat demonstrators and journalists with clubs. Jihad Barakat of Palestine Today TV said he was pushed and that his camera was broken. He said he saw three colleagues being beaten with clubs. Meanwhile, several hundred protesters marched through the center of the West Bank city of Ramallah on Monday, calling on Abbas to resign. Abbas heads the Palestinian Authority, a self-rule government that administers parts of the Israeli-occupied West Bank. Marchers also chanted that “security coordination is treason.” The policy, in which Abbas’ forces and Israeli troops cooperate against gunmen, is unpopular among Palestinians.

Headline:  Wave of threats at Jewish centers across the US sends police scrambling

Jewish community centers and synagogues across the United States received another series of phoned-in threats Sunday, prompting another round of police response. No suspicious items were found.
In Brighton, New York, police checked and cleared a Jewish community center, located outside of Rochester. It wasn’t the first threat to the community they had responded to in recent weeks.
“We do believe that this is part of, as I mentioned on Tuesday, a larger picture – a national trend. That’s why I did mention that the FBI was involved. They are assisting us. The state police has taken a lead role from a New York state perspective,” Brighton Police Chief Mark Henderson said. Bomb threats were received on Sunday by Jewish community centers in Indiana, Texas, New York, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Vancouver, British Columbia, the Jewish Community Center Association of North America said. Sunday’s threats brought the total this year to 128 incidents at 87 community centers, the association said. So far, all have been hoaxes. The American incidents prompted all 100 US senators last week to ask the federal government to help Jewish groups enhance security.

Headline:  Chilean Palestinians threaten to boycott Christians over anti-BDS meeting

Palestinians in Chile threatened to boycott a local Christian organization over a scheduled meeting with the Israeli Christian-Zionist leader Father Gabriel Naddaf. Last week, Naddaf, the head of the Christian Empowerment Council, was on a tour of the South American country, sponsored by the local JNF-KKL chapter and the Zionist Federation of Chile, to speak out against the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions movement. He was scheduled to meet with the leaders of ACN-Chile, a Catholic charity organization, and with the head of the Benedictine Monastery in Santiago. However, Palestinian groups said they would take action to financially harm the Christian groups for meeting with the Israeli representative against BDS. The Christian organizations eventually bowed to the pressure and canceled the meeting. Naddaf, who encourages Christian Israelis to enlist and integrate into the larger Israeli society, said that the religious leaders need to get deeper into the hearts and minds of the common people in order for them to make a difference for the good. Chile is home to about half a million Palestinians, most of them Christian, who immigrated when the Ottomans ruled the Holy Land. They have a large influence on all sectors of life in the country, and the Chilean-Palestinian community is believed to be the largest Palestinian community outside of the Arab world.

Headline:     Intel Minister: Hezbollah’s ‘Golan Liberation Brigade’ increases Iran risk

Headline:  IRGC-controlled Iraqi militia forms ‘Golan Liberation Brigade’

The formation of a new Hezbollah brigade which aims to liberate the Golan Heights from Israel increases the threat posed by Iran on the northern border, Minister of Intelligence and member of Security Cabinet Israel Katz told The Jerusalem Post on Monday. “The so called ‘Golan Liberation Brigade’ sharpens the threat posed by the presence of Iran and Hezbollah in Syria in general and on the Syrian side of the Golan Heights in particular,” he said. “I have been saying for a long time that if Iran is allowed to base itself in Syria it will be a threat to Israel’s national security and a constant source of regional instability and tension and friction with the Sunni majority in Syria and with the Sunni countries in the region as well,” Katz added.  The latest Iranian proxy to be formed in Syria is a brigade that was announced last week by the spokesman for the Iranian-controlled Iraqi militia known as Harakat Hezbollah al-Nujaba, Seyed Hashem Moussavi at a press conference in Iran. “After the latest victories [in Syria and Iraq], we established the ‘Golan Liberation Brigade’. This is a trained army with specific plans. If the government of Syria requests, we and our allies are ready to take action to liberate Golan,” Moussavi was quoted by Iran’s Tasnim news agency as saying. “We will not permit Arab and Islamic countries in the region to remain in the grasps of the occupiers,” he added. According to Moussavi, the brigade members are well trained special forces and well-armed, ready to assist the Syrian regime in retaking the Golan Heights, territory won by Israel in the 1967 Six Day War. The group also released a 45-second video promoting the newly formed Golan liberation brigade, with dozens of balaclava-wearing fighters marching with a banner reading “Israel will be destroyed.”

Headline:    Proposed Temple Mount advocacy foundation raises ire among Arab MKs

In a move arousing resentment and anger, Likud Ministers Ze’ev Elkin and Miri Regev are seeking to establish an advocacy foundation to promote Jewish ties to the Temple Mount. The proposed Temple Mount heritage foundation, similar to the existing Western Wall Heritage Foundation, will be budgeted at NIS 2 million a year, taken from Elkin’s Jerusalem Affairs Ministry and Regev’s Culture Ministry. Among other things, the foundation would produce movies and clips in a variety of languages and develop courses on the subject and raise awareness on social media. “In recent years, Israel has been dealing with a de-legitimization campaign, which in part uses the Temple Mount, its heritage and its connection to the Jewish people in a negative manner that is inconsistent with factual truth as reflected in historical and archaeological research,” Elkin and Regev said in a joint statement. According to the ministers, the initiative was undertaken in response to the controversial UNESCO decision, which failed to recognize the Jewish people’s connection to the holy site. The Joint List attacked the initiative, saying the area is “holy to Islam and regardless of whatever foundation is established, nothing will change that facts.”

Lebanon

Headline:      Hezbollah, Syrian Army to withdraw from border area if Syrian rebels agree to fight ISIS

In a bid to resolve several years of deadlock in the mountainous West Qalamoun region, Moscow offered local rebel factions on the border between Syria and Lebanon a deal which would have the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hezbollah (Lebanese paramilitary) withdraw from its checkpoints in the area if opposition groups agree to expel ISIS insurgents. However, Islamist militants loyal to newly formed Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham (Syrian Al-Qaeda branch) are not part of the agreement but were nevertheless offered an option to evacuate their forces to Idlib province, considered rebel heartland. If local opposition factions comply and kick out ISIS militants, the SAA will allow government institutions in the area to run under rebel control, somewhat similar to the compromise situation in the East Qalamoun. According to an opposition source, the unorthodox deal was offered under the table by the Russian Centre for Reconciliation on Sunday. Rebel commanders are yet to reply to the enquiry. Across the border in Lebanon, ISIS controls most of the northern part of Arsal while Hayyat Tahrir al-Sham controls the southern part. The two jihadist groups often clash with one another, as well as the Lebanese Army and Hezbollah.

Saudi Arabia

Headline:    Pakistan in talks with Saudi Arabia to send combat troops to protect the kingdom

Pakistan is in discussions with Saudi Arabia to send combat troops to protect the kingdom amid growing concern over threats from ISIL militants and Houthi rebels. Plans are underway to dispatch a brigade-sized deployment following a request from Riyadh, which wants the troops as an emergency response force. A brigade is usually made up of between 1,500 and 3,500 troops. Pakistan and Saudi Arabia have long had a close military and security relationship, with troops from Pakistan’s large and combat-hardened army regularly deployed for training Saudi soldiers. Although the kingdom, like other Arab Gulf countries, does not make the numbers public, experts say there are as many as 70,000 Pakistanis serving across the Saudi military services at any one time. But requests for Pakistani combat brigades have usually only been made during times of heightened tensions in the kingdom. A senior Pakistani military source confirmed the Saudi request, but stressed troops would “not go across the border” with Yemen, where Saudi Arabia is leading an Arab military coalition against the Iran-backed Houthi rebel movement. Instead, the source said troops will be kept on standby in case of any major internal security threat or terrorist incident.

Headline:  Fifteen killed in fighting near Yemen Red Sea port

Headline:  Saudi-led coalition’s port op would cut off Yemen from food & aid supplies, Russia warns

Seven Yemeni soldiers and eight rebels were killed in heavy fighting over the past 24 hours near the Red Sea coastal town of Mokha, medical and security sources said Saturday. The historic port was captured by government forces on Feb. 10 as part of a major offensive launched in January to try to recapture Yemen’s 450-kilometer Red Sea coastline, which had previously been almost entirely in rebel hands. But there have been repeated clashes over the past month both inland and north of the town as the rebels seek to take it back. The latest fighting focused on the village of Yakhtul, 14 kilometers north of Mokha, which is currently in government hands. It came as an airstrike on a rebel-held port further north by an Arab-led coalition supporting the government killed at least 22 civilians and six rebels and wounded dozens. The strike on the town of Khokha targeted rebel fighters who had taken refuge at the entrance to a market selling the mild narcotic qat, which is a central part of Yemeni social life.

Egypt

Headline:      Egyptian general tells millions to stop complaining about crisis

A major general in the Egyptian security services told Egyptians to stop complaining about hunger and poverty for the sake of the country’s prosperity, during a meeting at an unidentified location on Saturday. In a video, circulated on social media, Mohamed Mansour was seen telling Egyptians it was “rude” of them to complain about rising prices or a shortage of food supplies. He went on to encourage Egyptians to “go hungry” and “sacrifice their dinner” for the sake of Egypt. Egyptians took to the streets in several cities on Tuesday in angry demonstrations at government cuts to bread subsidies. Reports and videos on social media showed crowds in central Alexandria protesting after bakeries refused to take paper subsidy cards, which many poor Egyptians use to gain a government ration of bread. Protests were also reported in Egypt’s southern Minya governorate and the Cairo suburb of Imbaba.

Headline:      Assad calls U.S. forces ‘invaders’, but still hopeful on Trump

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said U.S. forces in Syria were “invaders” and he had yet to see “anything concrete” emerge from U.S. President Donald Trump’s vow to prioritize the fight against Islamic State. Assad has said he saw promise in Trump’s statements emphasizing the battle against Islamic State in Syria, where U.S. policy under President Barack Obama had backed some of the rebels fighting Assad and shunned him as an illegitimate leader. “We haven’t seen anything concrete yet regarding this rhetoric,” Assad said in an interview with Chinese TV station Phoenix. “We have hopes that this administration in the United States is going to implement what we have heard,” he said. The United States is leading a coalition against Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. In Syria, it is working with an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias. Their current focus is to encircle and ultimately capture Raqqa – Islamic State’s base of operations in Syria. This week, the U.S.-led coalition announced that around 400 additional U.S. forces had deployed to Syria to help with the Raqqa campaign and to prevent any clash between Turkey and Washington-allied Syrian militias that Ankara sees as a threat. Asked about a deployment of U.S. forces near the northern city of Manbij, Assad said: “Any foreign troops coming to Syria without our invitation … are invaders.” “We don’t think this is going to help”.

Headline:    Syrian Al-Qaeda affiliate claims twin bombing in Damascus

Headline:  Al Qaeda is resurgent

A Syrian jihadist group affiliated with al-Qaeda has claimed responsibility for a twin bombing on Friday in the capital Damascus that killed at least 40. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham said the attack was “a message to Iran” over the country’s support for Syrian president Bashar al Assad. The majority of dead were Iraqi pilgrims, according to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. The Observatory put the death toll at 74, but the figure was not confirmed. The blast wounded 120, according to Iraq’s government. According to the Observatory, the attack consisted of a roadside bomb detonated as a bus passed, and a suicide bombing. It took place near the Bab al-Saghir cemetery, which houses Shia mausoleums. Sunni militants often target Shias but attacks in the capital are uncommon. Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (Liberation of the Levant Organisation) is a new group formed from Jabhat Fateh al-Sham (previously al-Nusra Front) and four smaller factions.

Headline:   Rebels agree to leave last Homs enclave

Syrian rebel fighters have agreed to leave their last enclave in the city of Homs, government officials say. Homs Governor Talal Barrazi said the evacuation of al-Wair was part of an existing deal with community leaders and would take six to eight weeks. Opposition activists said the rebels would be allowed to depart with their families for rebel-held northern Syria. The pro-opposition Orient News website reported that the rebels planned to head to Jarablus, a town near the border with Turkey that was captured from so-called Islamic State last August. In a separate development on Monday, several rebel factions said they were not yet ready to send a delegation to attend talks with the government that are scheduled to begin in Kazakhstan on Tuesday. Ahmed Othman of the Sultan Murad brigade told Reuters that one of the reasons for the boycott was unfulfilled promises relating to a cessation of hostilities agreement brokered by Russia and Turkey at the end of December. Mr Othman complained that Russia, an ally of President Bashar al-Assad, had failed to halt the government’s bombardment of rebel-held areas.

Headline:     Iraqi Army overruns more ISIS-held villages on the western outskirts of Mosul

The Iraqi Armed Forces are slowly but surely on their way to victory in Mosul after new advancements were achieved inside the city and in rural areas of Nineveh province on Sunday. Pushing southwards along the Tigris River from the recently liberated water plant, the Iraqi Army’s 16th Division and Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) were able to impose full control over the villages of Subaih and Darnajoj, northwest of Mosul. Meanwhile, the Iraqi Federal Police and Rapid Response Division stormed Bab Al-Tob and made great progress in the area, coming within 300 meters of the Old Bridge and 500 meters of Al-Nuri mosque, the site where ISIS leader Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi held his first speech. In addition, the Iraqi special forces finally imposed full control over the Al-Aghwat district after a prolonged battle with ISIS militants. Effectively, the Iraqi Armed Forces have reached the Old City in the central part of western Mosul. This neighborhood consists of small, narrow streets that favor ISIS’ style of urban warfare which relies mostly on sniper nests, booby traps and suicide bombers. After the Iraqi Armed Forces also entered the New Mosul District earlier today, ISIS controls little more than 15% of Iraq’s second largest city.

Headline:   After Mosul, Iraqi troops to target Islamic State in Anbar: commander

Iraqi security forces will turn to Islamic State strongholds in western Anbar after expelling the extremist group from western Mosul, a senior army commander in the province said. Maj. Gen. Qassem al-Mohammadi was quoted saying Islamic State strongholds in Anbar’s western towns of Annah, Rawa and Qaem “will be liberated soon”. Mohammadi said operations targeting those areas will launch soon after the security campaign against IS in western Mosul. Earlier on Monday, Anadolu Agency quoted an army officer saying that 2000 U.S. army soldiers had arrived in a military base in Anbar to back up Iraqi forces in anticipated offensives against IS in the west of the province. Islamic State held Anbar’s western regions, close to the borders with Syria, since 2014. Those areas have sustained occasional bombardments by Iraqi and U.S.-led coalition fighter jets. There has not been an officially-declared military campaign to free those regions, but the province’s military command launched a brief assault early January that managed to recapture some western villages before stopping again.

Headline:      Turkey referendum: Clashes as Dutch expel minister

Headline:     German MPs call for troop withdrawal from Turkish airbase amid rally row

Dutch riot police have clashed with protesters in Rotterdam, amid a diplomatic row that saw a Turkish minister escorted out of the country. Water cannon and police on horseback were used to disperse about 1,000 people outside the Turkish consulate. The minister was trying to win support among expatriates for a referendum on expanding Turkish presidential powers. The Dutch government says such rallies would stoke tensions days before the Netherlands’ general election. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan stepped up the war of words on Sunday, telling a ceremony in Istanbul: “Holland! If you are sacrificing Turkish-Dutch relations for the sake of the elections on Wednesday, you will pay a price.” Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, Turkey’s family minister, had arrived by road on Saturday ahead of her planned rally. However, she was denied entry to the consulate in Rotterdam and taken to the German border by police. Earlier, the Netherlands had barred Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu from entering the country by plane. He has now travelled to Metz in northern France to address a rally there on Sunday. Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said on Sunday that Turkey would respond in the “harshest ways” to this “unacceptable behaviour”. Meanwhile, Amid a row with Turkey over its presidential powers referendum, some German MPs are calling for the withdrawal of troops deployed at Incirlik airbase. Germany is flying reconnaissance sorties from the Turkish base as part of the US-led anti-Islamic State coalition. Florian Hahn, spokesman for security and foreign policy of the Christian Social Union (CSU), said the Germans soldiers and officers may become pawns in Turkish power games. “Amid this heated atmosphere, it has become increasingly uncertain that the Turkish government can and will guarantee the protection of our soldiers in Incirlik,” he told Germany’s Bild am Sonntag newspaper. He called on the government to stop investing in the infrastructure of the airbase and transfer the Tornados stationed there elsewhere.

Iran

Headline:   Iran sending troops, ammunition to Syria and Yemen battlefields via civilian flights

Iran is using civilian flights to secretly send soldiers and ammunition to war zones in Syria and Yemen, an Iranian military official said. The Iranian troops ride in the rear of the planes and exit via a rear door “separate from the regular passengers,” an Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) official told the anti-government “Amed News” website. Teheran is also using the civilian flights to transfer wounded and dead soldiers, the official said.  According to the reports, which were translated and published by the MEMRI institute which tracks media outlets in the Middle East, the flights by Iran’s Mahan Air to Damascus in Syria and Sana’a in Yemen are being used to ship large quantities of ammunition in the cargo holds of the civilian planes which are then sent to battle zones. The IRG official said that “last year, one of these airliners transported regular passengers [as well as] military forces and ammo from Iran to Syria, and on its way back to Iran, it brought dead and injured Iranians, Syrians, Afghanis, and Pakistanis for treatment or burial in Iran.” The official added: “On the return trip from Syria, these airliners carry people in Zone C, which is in the rear of the plane and the regular passengers cannot see it. They disembark via the rear door and occupy a separate part [of the plane] from the regular passengers. These are the same people Iran trains in armed combat and guerrilla warfare at IRGC bases. In fact, the IRGC commanders use the regular passengers on Mahan Air flights as a cover to transfer weapons, ammo, and [fighters] trained [to wage] guerrilla warfare in the region.”

Headline:    Blast destroys bus in Afghan capital, killing at least one

An explosion in the center of the Afghan capital Kabul destroyed a bus carrying employees of one of the country’s biggest telecoms firms on Monday, killing at least one person and wounding eight, Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. Security forces surrounded the smoking remains of the bus, which appeared to be completely burned out. A security official said earlier the blast was caused by a suicide bomber on foot, but Sediqqi said it appeared to have been caused by a roadside bomb. The explosion, as people were leaving work in a well-to-do area of the city, came less than a week after dozens of people were killed and wounded in an attack on the country’s largest military hospital by gunmen dressed in medical uniforms. Officials are still investigating that assault, which was claimed by Islamic State, but the two attacks underline the broad security threat in Afghanistan, where the Taliban have stepped up their insurgency against the Western-backed government.

Headline:      Libya’s deepening split finds battleground at oil terminals

Hundreds or thousands of armed men are converging on Libya’s main oil-shipping terminals, which the rival powers in the country’s east and west are fighting to control in a battle being watched by global oil markets. The struggle for the Ras Lanuf refinery and nearby Sidr depot threatens to spiral into an all-out conflict between east and west. Already, it has seen the bloodiest fighting yet between the two camps: About 40 troops from the east were killed over four days as militias backed by western factions stormed the area Friday, losing a handful of casualties. Now forces from the east loyal to military strongman Khalifa Hifter are massing nearby, threatening a new assault to wrest back the facilities, which nominally are in the hands of the Tripoli government. In another step, the eastern parliament Tuesday voted to withdraw support from the United Nations peace deal that created the Tripoli government in January 2016 in hopes of ending years of chaos in the North African country. The withdrawal of support undermines the government, which has had difficulty asserting authority even in Tripoli.

Headline:       ACLU launches nationwide training on protest, resistance

The American Civil Liberties Union staged a nationwide training event Saturday to make sure people are aware of their rights as protesters and urge organized, public resistance by those opposed to policies of President Donald Trump. Organizers said the event at a sports arena on the University of Miami campus was livestreamed to locations in all 50 states. ACLU Executive Director Anthony Romero said 200,000 people had signed up to attend one of an estimated 2,000 local events. The event, staged in town hall style, was aimed at capitalizing on numerous demonstrations since Trump’s election in November and to make sure people know their rights to protest, Romero said. He said priority issues are immigration, the First Amendment free speech and religious freedom rights, civil and reproductive rights and rights of gay, lesbian and transgender people. “We will bring all the lawsuits necessary to defend these rights,” Romero said. “We’ll do the work in the courts. You do the work in the streets. People are motivated. They want to be engaged.”

Headline:   Schumer Warns of Government Shutdown Over Trump’s Border Wall

Senate Democrats warned Republicans Monday that attempts to take funding away from Planned Parenthood or pay for President Donald Trump’s border wall in a stopgap spending bill that must pass by late April would result in a government shutdown. The threat from Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and other Democratic leaders sets up a climactic first showdown with the president, particularly with their inclusion of Trump’s signature border wall proposal. “If Republicans insist on inserting poison pill riders such as defunding Planned Parenthood, building a border wall, or starting a deportation force, they will be shutting down the government and delivering a severe blow to our economy,” Schumer said in a statement. Up until now, Trump hasn’t needed Democratic votes to stock his cabinet or advance the repeal of Obamacare, but a spending bill keeping the government open is subject to a 60-vote threshold in the Senate. If Congress doesn’t act, a partial government shutdown would begin on April 29. Democrats also warned against including funding for a “deportation force” as the Trump administration emphasizes ramped up arrests and deportations of immigrants in the country illegally.

We killed 17 people, including senior officials of military and security and former lawmakers,” Sheikh Abdiasis Abu Musab, al Shabaab’s military operation spokesman, told Reuters by phone. Earlier on Monday, police shot at a minibus, also in Mogadishu, when the driver refused to stop as it approached a checkpoint. The minibus exploded, wounding two bystanders and killing the driver, police officer Nur Osman told Reuters.

Headline:   Scottish independence: Nicola Sturgeon to seek second referendum

Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed she will ask for permission to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence. Ms Sturgeon said she wanted a vote to be held between the autumn of 2018 and the spring of the following year. That would coincide with the expected conclusion of the UK’s Brexit negotiations. The Scottish first minister said the move was needed to protect Scottish interests in the wake of the UK voting to leave the EU. She said she would ask the Scottish Parliament next week to request a Section 30 order from Westminster. The order would be needed to allow a fresh legally-binding referendum on independence to be held. Prime Minister Theresa May has so far avoided saying whether or not she would grant permission. Responding to Ms Sturgeon’s announcement, Mrs May said a second independence referendum would set Scotland on course for “uncertainty and division” and insisted that the majority of people in Scotland did not want another vote on the issue.

Headline:   Vietnam demands China stop cruises in South China Sea

Japan plans to dispatch its largest warship on a three-month tour through the South China Sea beginning in May, three sources said, in its biggest show of naval force in the region since World War Two. China claims almost all the disputed waters and its growing military presence has fueled concern in Japan and the West, with the United States holding regular air and naval patrols to ensure freedom of navigation. The Izumo helicopter carrier, commissioned only two years ago, will make stops in Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines and Sri Lanka before joining the Malabar joint naval exercise with Indian and U.S. naval vessels in the Indian Ocean in July. It will return to Japan in August, the sources said. “The aim is to test the capability of the Izumo by sending it out on an extended mission,” said one of the sources who have knowledge of the plan. “It will train with the U.S. Navy in the South China Sea,” he added, asking not to be identified because he is not authorized to talk to the media. A spokesman for Japan’s Maritime Self Defense Force declined to comment.

Headline:   US Deploys Attack Drones to South Korea Amid Tension with North

Headline:   U.S. Navy SEALs to take part in joint drills in S. Korea

The United States has started to deploy attack drones to South Korea, a U.S. military spokesman said on Monday, days after it began to deploy an advanced anti-missile system to counter “continued provocative actions” by isolated North Korea. The drones, Gray Eagle Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) coming to South Korea are part of a broader plan to deploy a company of the attack drones with every division in the U.S. Army, the spokesman said. “The UAS adds significant intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capability to U.S. Forces Korea and our ROK partners,” United States Forces Korea spokesman Christopher Bush said in a statement. He did not say exactly when the drones would arrive in South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea (ROK). North Korea has conducted two nuclear tests and a string of missile tests since the beginning of last year, despite the imposition of new U.N. sanctions. Last week, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, said Washington was re-evaluating its North Korea strategy and “all options are on the table.”

Headline:     Impressions From the 2017 World Government Summit

As is the case with geopolitics, power abhors vacuum and this retreat from the U.S. and the UK will give rise to new actors. Indeed, the free movement of people, services, and ideas will not halt anytime soon. It will happen regardless. New champions will support and recalibrate how it’s done. But is the new champion of the liberal international order, Chinese President Xi Jinping? If you were in Davos in January, you may have thought so. The discussions there centered around what global leaders can do to help better communicate the benefits of international cooperation, trade, and globalization. The anxiety stemming from the unknowns of a new American president taking office just days from Davos was palpable. I witnessed the exact opposite in Dubai at the fifth installment of the World Government Summit.  In Dubai, the focus was the future and the mood from the international media corps was jubilant. An assortment of leaders was in attendance: media personalities, heads of the world’s top organizations, corporate, academic, and diplomatic leaders, and many more. The center theme? How can leaders dream boldly for a better future?

Headline:  Fighting Famine: The four countries where millions are starving- VIDEO/GRAPHIC PHOTOS

In a week of special coverage, ITV News is taking a closer look at how widespread starvation is threatening countries in parts of Africa and the Middle East. The United Nations has this week warned that drastic action is needed to help 20 million people facing starvation and famine across four countries.
SOUTH SUDAN- Millions of people are in need of humanitarian assistance, with 100,000 facing starvation now and a further one million on the brink of famine in Unity State. It is estimated that more than one million children are acutely malnourished across South Sudan, with more than a quarter of these severely malnourished. The combination of violence, drought and an economic crisis have created the humanitarian emergency.
NIGERIA- Around five million people are in food crisis, according to Oxfam, with this number predicted to reach 5.7 million by June this year. In areas cut off from humanitarian aid, it is thought at least 400,000 people could already be living in famine-like conditions. It is estimated that 250,000 children are severely malnourished, with up to 50,000 at risk of dying without immediate intervention. Conflict between militant group Boko Haram and government forces in the north-east of the country has forced around 2.5 million people from their homes. Many have had to shelter in areas that are already extremely deprived of food and water, while aid agencies have struggled to access certain regions because of the fighting.
YEMEN- It is estimated around 14 million Yemenis do not know where their next meal will come from, while the UN says around 80% of the population are in need of humanitarian assistance. Millions of people have been displaced from their homes by conflict and nearly half a million children are at risk of life-threatening malnutrition. The impacts are being felt in many parts of Yemen, including Taiz and Hodeida, where acute malnutrition rates among children under five are more than double the emergency threshold set out by the UN.
SOMALIA- Drought has created a major food crisis in Somalia and if the rains do not come soon then there is likely to be a famine. The last time this happened – in 2011 – 258,000 people died, half of them under the age of five. People are already dying from hunger, according to the country’s prime minister. The World Food Programme estimates that nearly three million people cannot meet their daily food requirements and another 3.3 million need support to prevent them sliding into crisis. The UN predicts that nearly one million children will be acutely malnourished this year, including 185,000 who will be severely malnourished and in need of urgent lifesaving support, a figure that is expected to rise.

Headline:   China reports 61 deaths from H7N9 bird flu in February

China reported 61 fatalities and 160 cases of human infection from H7N9 bird flu in February, the government said on Monday. The number of fatalities is much higher than that of previous years as it brought the death toll in this winter’s outbreaks to 161 since October. While the total for last month was lower than January’s 79, it was the highest number for the month of February since the deadly strain was first identified in 2013, according to data from the National Health and Family Planning Commission. The total of 140 deaths for the first two months of 2017 alone already surpasses the annual totals for avian flu in China in recent years. In 2010, 147 people died of the H1N1 strain of the virus.

Headline:       SXSW 2017: Why is the Vatican at a tech conference?

Ten years ago, SXSW Interactive enjoyed what’s still its most significant moment – the “launch” of Twitter. The service had been around for a little while before appearing at the festival, but it was here that its popularity skyrocketed. While it’s the Vatican’s first time at SXSW, it’s certainly not the first technology conference it has attended. Bishop Tighe also attended Web Summit in Lisbon last year, and there, as it is here, the hot topic was the growing power of Artificial Intelligence (AI). As the Vatican’s Adjunct Secretary of the Pontifical Council for Culture, one of Bishop Tighe’s many responsibilities is to run the social media accounts for the Pope, as well as considering ways in which the Catholic Church can stretch its influence into our digital lives. I put it to him that we are living at a time when the majority of people are far more likely to search Google for answers than they are to pray. When the Amazon Alexa in the corner of my kitchen can give me immediate answers based on data, why turn anywhere else? “All the data in the world will still leave room for choices that I have to make,” he said. “If we say big data will tell us what’s right or wrong, then I am no longer an agent, and my choices have been determined for me. That doesn’t correspond to my experience of being a human.” More profound, he said, will be the emergence of artificial intelligence and robotics in the working environment. Money aside, he argued we should be concerned about what a lack of work could do to our sense of self worth. “Let’s not romanticize it – some of the work that might be displaced is fairly tough, dangerous work and fairly menial. Maybe it’s no great loss. “[But] we need to reflect on how human beings who work are not just economic units producing products, they’re people with stories and families.”

Headline:  US Exorcists: Demonic Activity on the Rise

There is an alarming increase in demonic activity being reported by those who work in exorcism ministry, said the exorcist for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. Although steps are being taken to increase the number of exorcists, demand is still outpacing supply. Father Vincent Lampert has been an exorcist for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis since 2005 and is the pastor at St. Malachy’s in Indianapolis. He trained at the North American College in Rome and assisted with more than 40 exorcisms with longtime Italian exorcist Father Carmine De Filippi. Although the identities of most exorcists are hidden, Father Lampert often gives talks to warn against evil and turn people toward the power of God. In an interview with the Register, he said that he sees an increasing number of people involved in Satanic rituals and opening themselves up to evil. “The problem isn’t that the devil has upped his game, but more people are willing to play it,” Father Lampert said. He pointed to rampant pornography, illegal drugs use and the occult. “Where there is demonic activity, there is always an entry point,” he said.

Headline:     South Sudan Military: Rebels Kidnap 8 From Christian Charity

South Sudanese rebels have kidnapped eight local aid workers working for U.S. charity Samaritan’s Purse and are demanding aid deliveries to their area, a military spokesman said on Monday. The aid workers were taken from a village near Mayendit, about 420 miles (680 km) northeast of the capital of Juba, Brigadier General Lul Ruai Koang told Reuters. “The rebels attacked and abducted eight local staff from Samaritan’s Purse and they are being held to ransom. They have demanded that the organization takes aid to them,” he said. The charity confirmed the kidnapping in a statement but denied a ransom had been demanded. “We have been in contact with them and they have not been harmed. No ransom request has been made and we are hopeful that they will be released soon and safely,” it said. Last week, South Sudan announced plans to charge a levy of $10,000 per foreign aid worker, which with the danger of abduction, could hurt efforts to help the hungry. Nicholas Haysom, U.N. Special Envoy to Sudan and South Sudan, said: “It is … likely to lead to an exodus of humanitarian workers in a country that is already facing a dire humanitarian situation.

Headline:    Palestinians receive Obama’s $221 million secret gift

The US transferred $221 million to the Palestinian Authority (PA), funds former US President Barack Obama quietly released in his waning hours. The Trump administration initially announced a freeze on the move. During Wednesday’s press briefing, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said it was his “understanding” the funds had been released, after initially saying there was an ongoing review. The funds are meant for Palestinian programs, including “water, infrastructure, education, renewable energy, civil society, municipal governance, and the rule of law, as well as Gaza recovery,” he said. A small amount was transferred directly to Israeli PA creditors, as well as to Jerusalem Palestinian hospitals. “None of the funding was to go directly to the Palestinian Authority,” Toner stressed. He concluded the issue by saying he would “double-check.”

Headline:  Rejecting Purim spiel, Putin tells Netanyahu to stop dwelling on past

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu conveyed Israel’s interests in preventing an Iranian front against Israel in Syria, during his meeting in Moscow on Thursday with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “I made it clear that Israel has no objection to a (peace) agreement in Syria, but we are firmly opposed to such an agreement in which Iran and its proxies will be left with a military presence in Russia,” said Netanyahu after his meeting with Putin. The prime minister explained that he scheduled his meeting with Putin on Thursday in order to clarify Israel’s security concerns regarding Iranian attempts to build an open-ended military presence in Syria against the backdrop of peace talks in Kazakhstan. “We see Iran trying to build a military force, a military infrastructure, with the intention to be based in Syria, including the attempt by Iran to build a seaport,” explained Netanyahu. “All this has serious implications in terms of the security of Israel.” Earlier in his meeting, Netanyahu conveyed what he felt to be the threat of radical Shi’ite Islam, led by Iran, to the rest of the world at large. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop living in the past Thursday, after the Israeli premier tried to tie tensions with Iran to an upcoming Jewish holiday about a thwarted genocide of Jews in ancient Persia. Adopting a conciliatory tone, Putin said that the events described by Netanyahu had taken place “in the fifth century B.C.” “We now live in a different world. Let us talk about that now,” Putin said.

Headline:  Trump invites Abbas to the White House

US President Donald Trump and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas will speak by telephone later on Friday, the White House and Palestinian officials said, their first contact since Trump took office. The call, scheduled for 12:15 p.m. Washington time  (7:15 p.m. Israel time), comes as Palestinians are concerned at Washington’s more favorable approach towards Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu since Trump came to power. It is not clear what issues will be discussed in Friday’s call, but Palestinian officials indicated Abbas would emphasize his concerns about Israeli settlement building on occupied land and the need for a two-state solution to the conflict. At a Feb. 15 news conference during Netanyahu’s visit, Trump was ambivalent about a two-state solution, the mainstay of US policy in the region for the past two decades. While one of the first calls to a foreign leader made by Trump’s predecessor Barack Obama was to Abbas, Trump has been cautious in his contacts with the Arab world. He has spoken to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al Sisi and met with Jordan’s King Abdullah, who took the initiative and flew to Washington for an impromptu visit.
One of the most heated issues between Israel and the Palestinians is Israel’s building of settlements in the West Bank (Judea and Samaria) and eastern Jerusalem, territory the Palestinians want for their own state along with Gaza. In about two weeks, Jason Greenblatt, Trump’s special representative for international negotiations, is scheduled to arrive in Israel to begin talks with the government on construction in the settlements, The Jerusalem Post learned on Sunday.

Jordan on Wednesday bashed Israel for approving a preliminary reading of a bill that proposes to prohibit religious institutions from using outdoor speakers and is understood to be aimed mostly at the country’s mosques. Jordan, with whom Israel has had official diplomatic relations since the peace treaty between the two countries was signed in 1994, voiced concern over the possibility of the bill being approved, slamming it as a law that could potentially violate international human rights laws and conventions. According to the Jordan Times, Jordan’s Minister of State for Media Affairs, who also serves as the government’s spokesperson, Mohammad Momani, warned that Israel would be violating its commitment to the peace treaty if it eventually passed the bill into law. He explained that a clear provision in the Jordanian-Israeli peace treaty stipulates that Israel respects Jordan’s role regarding Islamic sanctuaries in Jerusalem. By passing the bill, the Knesset would interfere with the Jerusalem Wakf’s management of mosque affairs in the capital, he said. Momani also noted that international and humanitarian law apply to east Jerusalem.

At least 17 people have been killed in a Saudi-led coalition airstrike on a marketplace in the town of Al Hudaydah in Yemen, medics told an RT stringer. More than 12 people were injured, with the medics warning that the death toll may rise to over two dozen. According to AFP, 26 people, including 20 civilians and 6 Houthi rebel fighters, were killed in the airstrike. The militants allegedly fled to the market to escape the bombardment, but were still targeted by the warplanes. A military source close to Saudi-backed President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi told AFP that the rebels used civilians as “human shields.” Al-Masirah TV channel, controlled by the Houthis, reported that 27 people were killed and dozens wounded in the attack. The Red Sea port of Al Hudaydah is Yemen’s fourth-largest city, with a population of around 400,000, located in the west of the country. Since March 2015, Saudi Arabia has headed an international military coalition carrying out an unrelenting campaign of airstrikes against the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

Egypt

Headline:       Warming relations between Egypt and Hamas

While the warming relations between Hamas and Egypt is leading to a sense of relief which Gaza residents have not experienced for many years, it is also causing concern both in Jerusalem and Ramallah. Among other things, for the first time in a decade, Egypt agreed to send concrete pumps into Gaza. According to an official in the Hamas-run enclave, two pumps were brought in on Tuesday through the Rafah crossing which they said were intended for private companies, not for Hamas. Israel has prohibited the entrance of such pumps being moved into the strip ever since the blockade of Gaza commenced, for fear that Hamas could use them to arm their bunkers or for their ‘tunnel industry.’ The thawing of the frosty relations between Egypt and Hamas culminated in a first visit to Cairo during the regime of al-Sisi, conducted by deputy Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh in January, during which he met with Egyptian intelligence officials. Haniyeh was accompanied by a slew of Hamas officials, including from its military wing. At the same time, there is a growing tension between Ramallah and Cairo, both in the context of Egypt’s warming relations with Hamas, and in light of Egypt’s support of Muhammad Abbas’s great rival, Mohammed Dahlan, who was dismissed from the ranks of Fatah and is trying to challenge the leadership in Ramallah as an alternative leader. A record high was marked last week when Egypt prevented a senior Fatah official, Jibril Rajoub, to enter its territory. Rajoub landed at Cairo airport but had to return in disgrace on the same flight to Amman.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim says the United States risks major damage to its relationship with NATO ally Turkey if Kurdish forces are included in the fight to retake Raqqa, the Daesh group’s de facto capital. Turkey and the US are locked in a heated dispute about US plans to liberate Raqqa, with Turkey suggesting its own military and allied forces in Syria should mount the fight. Yildirim says Turkey wouldn’t be part of any operation including the Syrian Kurdish force. The Syrian government has called on the United Nations to force Turkey to pull “its invasion forces” out of Syria, state media said on Friday. Turkey’s military shelled Syrian government forces and their allies in northern Syria on Thursday, causing deaths and injuries, state-run SANA news agency reported. Turkey launched its first major military incursion into Syria in August, deploying tanks and air power in support of rebel groups opposed to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. Turkey’s operation aims to drive Islamic State from the border and stop Kurdish militias from gaining ground in their wake. Syria’s foreign ministry urged the U.N. secretary general and security council to “force Turkey to withdraw its invasion forces from Syrian land and stop the attacks”, SANA said. The Syrian government blames Turkey for “killing tens of thousands of its innocent sons and destroying Syrian infrastructure”, it added.

Headline:  Kurdish militants slice through the Islamic State heartland near Raqqa

US-backed Syrian militias said on Thursday they have enough forces to capture the city of Raqqa from ISIS with support from the US-led coalition, underlining their opposition to any Turkish role in the attack. Raqqa is ISIS’s main base of operations in Syria and the US-backed campaign to capture it has been boosted with the arrival of a Marines artillery unit. The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which includes the Kurdish YPG militia and Arab groups, have in recent days cut the road from the Raqqa to ISIS’s stronghold in Deir al-Zor province – the last main road out of the city. Deeply worried by the YPG’s influence, Ankara is pressing Washington to take part in the final assault on Raqqa. The SDF says it ruled out any Turkish role during meetings with US officials last month, though Turkey said on Thursday no decision had been made yet and the US-led coalition said a possible Turkish role remained a point of discussion. “The number of our forces is now increasing, particularly from among the people of the area, and we have enough strength to liberate Raqqa with support from the coalition forces,” Jihan Sheikh Ahmed, an SDF spokeswoman, said.

Iraqi UN Ambassador Mohamed Ali Alhakim said on Friday there was “no evidence” that Islamic State had used chemical weapons in Mosul, where the militants are fighting off an offensive by US-backed Iraqi forces. Alhakim said he spoke with officials in Baghdad at midday on Friday and “there was really no evidence that Daesh has used this chemical weapon.” Daesh is another name for Islamic State.  The United Nations said last Saturday that 12 people, including women and children, had been treated for possible exposure to chemical weapons agents in Mosul since March 1. Meanwhile, Combined Iraqi forces on Friday liberated another district in western Mosul from ISIS, whilst also repelling a failed assault on Tal Afar military airport. The district liberated was identified as al-Amle to the southwest of the city. This is in conjunction to the liberation of Nabi Sheet and Oakidat districtS, which lay on the outskirts of Mosul’s Old City.

Turkey

Headline:      Putin: Russia-Turkey Relations ‘Being Re-established Quickly’

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Friday that Russian-Turkish relations are strengthening as the two countries seek ways to reduce the scale of fighting in the six-year Syrian conflict. “We are very happy that connections between our countries are being re-established quickly,” Putin told reporters as he hosted Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Moscow. “We are actively working on solving the most serious crisis, first of all the Syrian one.” Russia and Turkey worked closely to broker a cease-fire in Syria in December. In addition to co-sponsoring two negotiating sessions this year between the Syrian government and the opposition, they collaborated on a campaign to neutralize the Islamic State militant group in Syria. Their increasingly close relationship comes after the two nations supported opposing sides in Syria, with Russia assisting the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Turkey throwing its support behind some Syrian opposition forces.

Iran

Headline:   Iran claims it tested ballistic missile

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard claimed on Thursday it had successfully tested a ballistic missile, The Associated Press reported, citing Iran’s semiofficial Fars news agency. The Iranian report quoted Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, chief of the Guard’s airspace division, as saying the missile destroyed a target from a distance of 250 kilometers (155 miles). Hajizadeh claimed the sea-launched ballistic missile dubbed Hormuz 2 was tested last week. The Hormuz 2 is capable of hitting floating targets with high accuracy within a range of 300 kilometers (186 miles), Fars said. It provided no additional details. Another Iranian news outlet, the Tasnim news agency, quoted Hajizadeh as saying the Revolutionary Guard had prepared a ballistic missile for civilian purposes but plans to launch it were canceled after a threat by the United States.

Afghanistan

Headline:       IS Taking New Strategy in Afghanistan

The attack in Kabul that killed at least 30 people this week, claimed by the Islamic State militants, was different in strategy from the group’s past assaults. Those, like the one on a Shi’ite Hazara minority group protest in Kabul last year, had been simpler. Large public gatherings are easy targets for a suicide bomber. An attack on a military hospital in a city like Kabul, where security is so tight one cannot get into a shopping mall without going through metal detectors, requires complex reconnaissance and pre-planning. It pointed to the group’s ability to carry out a sophisticated, intelligence-driven operation, according to Barnett Rubin, associate director of the Center on International Cooperation. “[T]hey were able to reconnoiter the hospital very well to figure out how to get into it, to smuggle all of the explosive material into Kabul, to have a safe house where they could set up everything, they obtained the proper clothing in order to disguise themselves as doctors and so on,” Rubin said.

Headline:   Russian private security firm says it had armed men in east Libya

Headline:  IS attempting regrouping in Libya – US African Command Head

A force of several dozen armed private security contractors from Russia operated until last month in a part of Libya that is under the control of regional leader Khalifa Haftar, the head of the firm that hired the contractors told Reuters. It is the clearest signal to date that Moscow is prepared to back up its public diplomatic support for Haftar — even at the risk of alarming Western governments already irked at Russia’s intervention in Syria to prop up President Bashar al-Assad. Haftar is opposed to a U.N.-backed government which Western states see as the best chance of restoring stability in Libya. But some Russian policy-makers see the Libyan as a strongman who can end the six years of anarchy that followed the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. The presence of the military contractors was, according to the head of the firm, a commercial arrangement. It is unlikely though to have been possible without Moscow’s approval, according to people who work in the industry in Russia. Oleg Krinitsyn, owner of private Russian firm RSB-group, said he sent the contractors to eastern Libya last year and they were pulled out in February having completed their mission. In an interview with Reuters, he said their task was to remove mines from an industrial facility near the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, in an area that Haftar’s forces had liberated from Islamist rebels. He declined to say who hired his firm to provide the contractors, where they were operating or what the industrial facility was. He did not say if the operation had been approved by the U.N.-backed government, which most states view as the sovereign ruler of Libya.

Armenia is currently in negotiations with southern neighbor Iran over plans to establish a free economic zone in Meghri, a town in the country’s southern region bordering Iran, Armenian Prime Minister Karen Karapetyan announced on Friday in Syunik. “For year 2017, we have prepared an investment package of 830 million U.S. dollars,” the prime minister announced. “55 million of these funds will be invested in Syunik’s mining, agricultural and other industries,” he added. Prime Minister Karapetyan said that an exporting company would be founded jointly with the Iranian side, which would be purchasing products from the Armenian market and sell them in Iran.

A new Islamic State is being constituted in Syria, and no one is paying attention— yet. “There’s a second Islamic State that has emerged,” says Theo Padnos, adding: “Nobody knows what is happening in the northwestern corner of Syria. I know because I’m in touch with some of these people, and they’re making videos all the time. We just haven’t connected the dots.” Padnos is a freelance journalist who, in 2012, was kidnapped in Syria and held captive by elements of Al Qaeda and the Nusra Front. He was released two years later, following negotiations led by the head of Qatar State Security. In a wide-ranging interview with RiskHedge’s Jonathan Roth, Padnos explains this new entity that’s growing in Syria. “There’s a second Islamic State; it’s right on the Turkish border,” Padnos explains. “To get to this second Islamic State from any European country, it’s a couple of days on the bus. Young kids are going every day — that’s what the guys on the ground in Syria are telling me: ‘Oh yes, we have new French people, new English people every day.'”

Headline:    Native Americans Bring Dakota Pipeline Protest To Trump’s Doorstep

Headline:  Pope Francis issues veiled warning about Donald Trump: ‘Populism is evil’

Thousands of demonstrators, including members of dozens of indigenous tribes, marched through the streets of the nation’s capital on Friday morning, capping a four-day protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline and President Donald Trump. Protesters gathered at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers headquarters before heading toward the White House, chanting, “You can’t drink oil. Keep it in the soil” as they marched. Raymond Kingfisher, of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe in Montana, told The Huffington Post that he traveled to Standing Rock six times over the last year to join the protests. His message to the Trump administration: “We’re still here.” “They need to start dealing with us because we are not going anywhere,” Kingfisher said during Friday’s march. “They need to honor our treaties and respect our rights.” The Native Nations March, organized by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the Indigenous Environmental Network, comes a month after the Army greenlighted completion of the Dakota Access Pipeline without an environmental study. Tribes from around the county have been gathering in Washington, D.C., for days, erecting teepees on the National Mall near the White House.

Headline:  Maryland to join lawsuit challenging Trump travel ban

Legal challenges against President Donald Trump’s revised travel ban mounted Thursday as Washington state said it would renew its request to block the executive order and a judge granted Oregon’s request to join the case. The events happened a day after Hawaii launched its own lawsuit, and Washington state Attorney General Bob Ferguson said New York state also asked to join his state’s legal effort. Massachusetts Attorney General Maura Healey said the state is joining fellow states in challenging the revised travel ban. Washington was the first state to sue over the original ban, which resulted in Judge James Robart in Seattle halting its implementation around the country. Ferguson said the state would ask Robart to rule that his temporary restraining order against the first ban applies to Trump’s revised action. “My message to President Trump is — not so fast,” Ferguson told reporters. “After spending more than a month to fix a broken order that he rushed out the door, the President’s new order reinstates several of the same provisions and has the same illegal motivations as the original.” Robart on Thursday granted Oregon’s request to join Washington and Minnesota in the case opposing the travel ban.

She now loses her presidential immunity and could face criminal charges. There have been angry scenes outside the court. Police said two protesters had died. The court ruling is the culmination of months of political turmoil and public protest. An election must now be held within 60 days. Ms Park’s office said she would not be leaving the Blue House, South Korea’s presidential palace, on Friday nor making any statement. Acting President Hwang Kyo-ahn has called for calm, saying the government should remain stable to prevent internal conflict from spreading.

Headline:     Trump set to send B-52 NUCLEAR BOMBERS to South Korea after North fires missiles at Japan and US warns of ‘overwhelming’ response

Headline:  U.S. reaffirms alliance with South Korea, THAAD deployment

DONALD Trump is reportedly planning to send nuclear bombers to the Korean peninsula as tensions in the region reach breaking point. North Korea and the US have been teetering on the brink of war for months after Kim Jong-un carried out a series of controversial missile launches. Earlier this week, trigger-happy Kim pushed his luck once more when he fired off four ballistic missiles into the seas near Japan. Now US military chiefs are reportedly planning to fly in B-1 and B-52 bombers – built to carry nuclear bombs – to show America has had enough, according to the Korea Times. Secretary of Defence James Mattis said the US “remains steadfast in its commitment” to the defence of the South, according to Pentagon spokesman Navy Capt Jeff Davis. Capt David said: “He further emphasised that any attack on the United States or its allies will be defeated and any use of nuclear weapons will be met with a response that is effective and overwhelming.” Washington is reportedly expected to deploy a series of strategic assets from the US as well as from military bases in Guam and Japan, reports the Daily Mail.

Headline:  China Warns of Nuclear First Strike in Response to THAAD Deployment

Headline:  China Working on Stealth Military Drones

China warns that it is reconsidering its policy not to use nuclear weapons against South Korea in response to the U.S. deploying the THAAD missile system and sending B-52 bombers to protect its ally. THAAD is being deployed to shield South Korea from North Korean ballistic missiles after several tests by the Stalinist state in recent months. Beijing is furious because the system will also be capable of detecting and tracking missiles launched from China. It was also reported yesterday that the U.S. will send B-1 and B-52 nuclear bombers to South Korea in order to display a stern show of strength. An article in the Global Times, which is widely regarded as the voice of the Chinese government, says that Beijing will respond to America’s “strategic provocations” by actioning a “rapid increase in the number and quality of China’s strategic nuclear weapons” and that China isn’t worried about starting a limited “arms race”. Asserting that “the US must pay the price for the THAAD deployment,” the piece goes on to warn that, “If the US further intensifies its anti-missile attempts and strategic containment, China may reconsider its pledge of not being the first to use nuclear weapons.” In other words, Beijing is signaling that it would be prepared to use nuclear weapons against South Korea in the event of a conflict.

Headline:  U.S. doctors sound alarm on yellow fever outbreak

Top infectious disease specialists are warning that a yellow fever outbreak in the jungles of Brazil could bring the disease to the United States. Over the past few weeks, the Latin American country has seen an uptick in yellow fever cases in some of its rural areas. According to the Pan American Health Organization, health officials have confirmed 371 yellow fever cases, including 241 deaths. Hundreds more cases are being investigated. This high number of cases is out of proportion to the number reported in a typical year, Anthony Fauci, M.D., director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) and colleague Catharine Paules, M.D., explain in a letter published this week in the New England Journal of Medicine. Since the areas in Brazil currently affected by the outbreak are close to major urban centers, including Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paolo where millions of people live, infectious disease experts are concerned that the virus could spread into city populations there for the first time in decades.

Hundreds of cases of mumps have been reported across the country since the start of 2017, according to the Centers for Disease and Control and Prevention. As of March 4, the CDC had received reports of 1,242 cases of mumps, a contagious viral infection that can result in swollen salivary glands and flu-like symptoms. In Washington state, Seattle and King County Heath officials said a dozen University of Washington students, all connected to sororities or fraternities, contracted the illness, KING-TV reported. This year, there have been 563 reported cases of mumps and probable mumps statewide, an increase from last year when 154 cases were reported in the state, according to the Washington State Health Department.  In Tulsa, officials investigated five confirmed cases of mumps in the area, KFOR-TV reported. In Illinois, the Lake County Health Department announced its partnering with Barrington School District 220 to hold a vaccination clinic after four cases of confirmed mumps were reported and 35 probable cases identified in the area. Though cases of the mumps fluctuate each year from a few hundred to a few thousand, the high number of cases so early in 2017 has some health officials concerned.

Headline:     Canada pushes to legalize, expand abortion worldwide

While Canada has some of the most libertine abortion laws in the world, with no national restrictions whatsoever on the termination of pregnancies and only limited local statues, the government of Justin Trudeau is looking to advance the cause of abortion even further, funding an effort to battle protections for unborn children abroad. Prime Minister Trudeau announced on Wednesday that his government would spend $650 million to promote birth control access and abortion abroad. Among other things, the plan entails funding for foreign NGOs battling laws restricting abortion in their home countries. According to an outline of the plan presented by the Trudeau government, Canada will fund efforts in foreign countries dedicated to “removing judicial and legal barriers to the fulfillment of sexual and reproductive health and rights.” That provision, says Minister of International Development Marie-Claude Bibeau, includes advocacy for expansion of abortion access. “Advocacy is included in our initiative, so yes, we will support local groups and international groups who advocate for women’s rights, including abortion.”

Headline:   Society ignores prohibitions put forth by Jesus

Our pabulum society today wants to correct Paul. “Where is the Love of God?” we ask. The answer: It is in the message. But sometimes love cuts like a sword; sometimes it scorches like fire; sometimes it burns like acid. Jesus forgave the sinful woman (John 8:1-11), but do not ignore the instructive: “Go thy way and sin no more.” The sterling ethics of the New Testament condemns the softness or wickedness of a society that calmly accepts adultery, fornication, abortion, homosexuality, pornography, graft, thievery, drunkenness and revelry (worldly parties) (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). Our loving God referred to some of the sins here as “abominations” (Leviticus 18) and promised the Jews that the “land (of Canaan) would vomit them out” if they practiced them. The Good News (Gospel) calls men and women out of the fields of wickedness and continues to call sin “sin.” No one courts the disapproval of society or their fellows. No one I know likes being persecuted. But in the name of biblical values, our forefathers in the faith were labeled “Hatred of the Human Race” not because they approved, ignored, or even blessed prevailing sins of the day, let alone did they tolerate it “in the church” (see 1 Corinthians 5). They were so called because they refused to compromise the truth and continued publicly to recognize sin as the real stigma of the human race. If we are to judge by the Bible, God has little if any use for the anemia that marks many of today’s pulpits and the people “who love to have it so.”

The Arab League unanimously passed a resolution on Tuesday decrying the moving of any embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. “The Arab League considers setting up any diplomatic mission in Jerusalem or moving it to the city an explicit attack on the rights of the Palestinian people and all Muslims and Christians,” the resolution states. The resolution was passed as US President Donald Trump considers going forward with his original plan to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The resolution did not address the US specifically. The resolution also calls upon member states to “monitor and follow up on any….moving of diplomatic missions to Jerusalem.” Moreover, the Arab League intends to “study effective measures to counter any such move through the United Nations (UN), including the Security Council.”

Headline: Israel moves to mute mosques’ call to prayer over loudspeakers

A law to muffle mosques’ amplified calls to prayer in Israel and occupied East Jerusalem won preliminary approval on Wednesday in a charged parliamentary session where Arab legislators denounced the measure as racist. Supporters of the bill say it is aimed at improving the quality of life of people living near mosques who have been losing sleep. The calls usually begin sounding a little before 5 A.M. through loudspeakers mounted on minarets. Opponents say the legislation, sponsored by right-wing parties, impinges on the religious freedom of Israel’s Muslim minority. Arabs make up almost 20 percent of the population and have long complained of discrimination. Two versions of law won initial approval and will go to committee for further discussion before any final vote in parliament, in what could be a lengthy process.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu ordered Housing and Construction Minister Yoav Galant to freeze thousands of housing units which Netanyahu and Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman had recently approved for construction in Judea and Samaria, it was reported Wednesday. Netanyahu and Liberman had issued two announcements that a total of 5,500 housing units would be constructed in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria shortly after US President Donald Trump’s inauguration in January. 2,000 of the units were to be available to be marketed immediately. The Defense Ministry said in a statement at the time of the second announcement that “The decision comes as part of the resumption of normal life in Judea and Samaria and in order to provide a real answer to living and housing needs in the region.” “We are in a new time period in which life in Judea and Samaria is returning to normal, and we will provide an appropriate response to the needs of the residents of the region,” said Liberman.

Headline: IRCG Source: Iran Strengthening Hezbollah, Palestinian Terrorists for Possible Conflict with Israel

Iran is responding to President Donald Trump’s warnings against the Tehran regime by strengthening Hezbollah and Gaza-based terror groups as well as allying itself with Russia in exchange for economic and military privileges, an Iranian military source said. In an article published on February 21 in the Iranian reformist news agency Amad News – Iran’s answer to WikiLeaks – an unnamed source from the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was cited as saying that the Islamic Republic was mulling its response to “increasing threats by America,” which have the potential to turn into an “extensive military confrontation.” Political, security and military officials have held a series of meetings, the source said, and have come to the conclusion that “Iran should deepen its strategic ties with Russia, such that in the event of an extensive war, Russia will defend Iran from American threats.” Russia would receive widespread compensation for such a strategic alliance, the source said. First, Tehran would grant Moscow access to oil fields in southern Iran, giving Russia annual profits of $50 billion. This would go some way toward assuaging the economic crisis Russia has suffered as a result of American sanctions over the Crimea issue. “The second recommendation is to realize Russia’s decades-old dream of access to free waters,” the Farsi-language article translated by the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) said, continuing “that if America attacks Iran, Russia will be able to defend Iran against the mighty sea and land strength of America.” Allowing Russia access to the Persian Gulf and control of its ports will also alleviate the sanctions against it, the IRGC source said.

Headline: UN Envoy Nikki Haley Warns Palestinians That UN Won’t Help Them Anymore

Headline: Hamas said set to recognize Palestine on 1967 borders, but not Israel

Palestinians should not look to the United Nations for a solution to its conflict with Israel, US Ambassador Nikki Haley warned in her first meeting with the Palestinian Authority’s envoy to the UN on Tuesday. Haley, who in her short tenure has already made clear at the UN that the international body’s bias against Israel is unacceptable, met with Riyad Mansour – who is not an official envoy, as the PA is not recognized by the UN, but a ‘permanent UN observer’ – for 45 minutes in New York. After the meeting, Haley tweeted that she had told Mansour the PA must meet with Israel in direct negotiations “rather than looking to the UN to deliver results that can only be achieved through the two parties.” Mansour acknowledged Haley’s request to the media, telling AFP that the US envoy had “raised the desire to see the two parties engaging in negotiations” and indicated that the US is considering another bid to revive stalled negotiations. According to Haley’s Twitter statement, Haley had also warned Mansour that the Palestinian Authority must stop its incitement to violence and terror. The talk, however, was cordial, both parties said.

Headline:   Jordan offers Turkey special zones for investment

Headline: Jordan, PLO stress two-state solution key to Arab-Israeli conflict

Prime Minister Hani Mulki on Tuesday expressed Jordan’s willingness to boost economic relations with Turkey through the establishment of special zones for Turkish industries and more Turkish investment in the Kingdom. In separate meetings with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim, Mulki stated that Jordan also welcomes more Turkish participation in mega projects on the drawing board, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. Jordan and Turkey plan to increase the trade volume to $3 billion, it was announced after the talks, in order to make up for the significant drop that resulted from the Syrian crisis. At his meeting with President Erdogan, Mulki reviewed Jordan’s stance on regional developments and common challenges, reiterating the Kingdom’s call for a political solution to the Syrian crisis. Mulki commended the “distinguished” relations between Turkey and Jordan, adding that Amman is keen on developing these ties on all levels, in the interest of both countries. Mulki stressed that the Palestinian-Israeli conflict remains the core issue in the Middle East, highlighting Jordan’s efforts to encourage Palestinians and Israelis to resume serious negotiations that lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 lines and with East Jerusalem as its capital. The prime minister underlined the Hashemite custodianship on holy sites in Jerusalem and its role in preserving Al Aqsa Mosque/Al Haram Al Sharif as well as all other Muslim and Christian sites in Jerusalem. Erdogan praised the Kingdom’s role in safeguarding Jerusalem’s shrines.

Headline:    ISIS terror group boasts Saudi nationals as its largest group of fighters

Saudi Arabia may be a key U.S. ally in the Middle East, but the oil-rich kingdom is also the No. 1 supplier of fighters for the Islamic State terror group in Iraq, according to Iraqi military sources. “The Saudi presence in ISIS is very large. What we have left are mainly Iraqis and Saudis,” one high-ranking Iraqi counterterrorism intelligence officer, who requested anonymity, told Fox News. “The Saudis make up a large number of suicide bombers, as they already have the ground work of radicalization installed in their minds from radical sheikhs in Saudi. And we’ve caught important ISIS commanders.” According to intelligence officials, Saudis make up as much as 30 percent of ISIS fighters left in Iraq. They are said to have streamed into the conflict-laden nation over the past three years through the previously porous Turkish border, as well as through the border towns of Abu Kamal and Rabia, the latter once known as an Al Qaeda stronghold.

Headline:    Sudan and the UAE battle for control of Yemen airport

Headline: Hadi: Government controls 85% of Yemen

The Sudanese army has a legitimate right to take over supervisory control of the Aden International Airport in southern Yemen, sources in the Sudanese capital Khartoum said. The claim comes days after a faction of the southern Yemeni army which was protecting the airport, under the supervision of the UAE army, came under attack from Sudanese soldiers who are part of the Saudi-led coalition and are allied with the officially recognised President of Yemen, Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi. The clashes are the latest in on-going tensions between rival Yemeni groups in the south and followed official orders from Hadi for the current head of the airport, Salah Al Emeeri, better known as Abu Qatan, to step down as head of the facility. Speaking about the latest incident, Al Emeeri, who has refused to relinquish control of the airport, told local news outlets that the Sudanese forces opened fire on southern Yemeni troops inside the airport before being pushed back and forced to flee. However, he confirmed that some Sudanese forces were still inside the facility. He claimed the situation was under the control of his forces who were exercising self-restraint. He vowed never to allow the Sudanese to take over and said he would maintain control of the military and the security operations in southern Yemen. His group has been protecting the airport, under the supervision of the UAE army, ever since the liberation of Aden in 2015 from Houthi rebels loyal to former President Ali Abdullah Salih.

Headline:    ‘We want bread’: subsidy cut sparks protests across Egypt

Some of Egypt’s major cities have been paralysed by rare protests in response to a cut in bread subsidies. The country’s ministry of supply reduced the state-sponsored provision of bread of up to 4,000 to 500 loaves per bakery, according to local news reports. The move is designed to replace an earlier and more controversial proposal to cut the supply from five loaves per person per day to three. But while the cuts are unlikely to have a dramatic affect on the bread rations of the average citizen, the suggestion struck a nerve among the Egyptian public. In response to the decision, hundreds of Egypt’s poorest citizens filled the streets in the cities of Alexandria and Giza, and the towns of Kafr el-Sheikh and Minya. Roads were blocked and residents surrounded government buildings. One protest in Alexandria showed people chanting “we want bread” and “everything but a loaf”, according to video footage taken by protesters. The hashtag “supply uprising” trended on Twitter across Egypt on Tuesday. The protests come as the cost of living for the average Egyptian rises rapidly. Egypt devalued its currency and cut fuel subsidies in November, prompting the value of the Egyptian pound to halve and leading to queues of furious citizens at petrol stations.

Headline:   Iraq to continue striking Daesh targets in Syria, Abadi says

Iraq will continue to hit Daesh targets in Syria, as well as in neighboring countries if they give their approval, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi said on Wednesday. “I respect the sovereignty of states, and I have secured the approval of Syria to strike positions (on its territory),” he told a conference in the Iraqi Kurdish city of Sulaimaniya. Abadi on Feb. 24 announced the first Iraqi air strike inside Syrian territory, targeting Daesh positions in retaliation for bomb attacks in Baghdad. “I will not hesitate to strike the positions of the terrorists in the neighboring countries, we will keep on fighting them,” Abadi said.

Headline:   Warplanes bomb east of Damascus after truce declared

Warplanes bombed a rebel-held area east of Damascus on Wednesday where Russia declared a ceasefire less than 24 hours earlier, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. There was no immediate comment from the Syrian military. Russia’s Defense Ministry said on Tuesday a ceasefire had been agreed in Eastern Ghouta in Syria’s Damascus province until March 20. The Observatory said air strikes and artillery had hit three towns there. A media unit run by Damascus ally Hezbollah said the Syrian air force had hit jihadists tied to Syria’s former al Qaeda offshoot in Irbeen city north east of Damascus, and also in al Qaboun, both in Eastern Ghouta. The Syrian army has been closing in on the area in recent months, and towns there have seen an escalation of aerial raids and fighting on several frontline in recent days, according to opposition sources. The army and its allies are seeking to force rebels to agree to truce deals similar to those that have led to evacuating thousands of opposition fighters to areas in the country’s north.

Headline: US troops land in Syria to launch Raqqa operation

debkafile’s military and intelligence sources disclose that elements of the 75th Ranger Regiment have arrived in Syria for the Trump administration’s first direct military operation in Syria: the long-delayed offensive to capture Raqqa from the Islamic State. The plan was put before the US, Russian and Turkish chiefs of staff who were getting together for the first time on Tuesday, March 7, in the Turkish town of Antalya, as revealed earlier on this site. Rangers Regiment troops, which will spearhead the Raqqa attack, flew in from Fort Lewis air base, Washington, to the US air facility in Rmeilan, near the Syrian Kurdish town of Hasaka, equipped with light Striker tanks. More tanks and heavy equipment reached the Syrian base overland from Iraqi Kurdistan.
According to our sources, President Donald Trump decided, after consulting with Defense Secretary James Mattis and National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, that the US army would go it alone in the Raqqa offensive together with a single local force: the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. The SDF is composed of 45,000 fighters of the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia and 10,000 Arab tribesmen, most belonging to the north Syrian branch of the Shamar. Gen. Joseph Dunford, Chairman of the US Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Valery Gerasimov, Russian Chief of Staff, and Gen. Hulusi Akar, Turkish army chief, were conferring in Antalya when the Rangers landed in Syria.

The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) and Hezbollah forces are preparing for a new offensive in the northwestern countryside of Aleppo after taking a 3 month long hiatus to concentrate on more pressing fronts around the province. According to a military source in Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Army’s High Command has been preparing for an offensive in the northwestern countryside for quite some time; especially, after putting their operations on hold last year near the ‘Anadan Plain. In preparation for this offensive, the Syrian Arab Army, Hezbollah, and Harakat Al-Nujaba (Iraqi paramilitary) have sent a large number of reinforcements to the northwestern sector of Aleppo, concentrating most of the military personnel near the Al-Zahra Association Quarter.

Iraqi forces on Tuesday recaptured the main government building in Mosul, the central bank branch and the museum where three years ago the militants filmed themselves destroying priceless statues.
A Rapid Response team stormed the Nineveh governorate complex in an overnight raid that lasted more than an hour, killing dozens of Daesh fighters, spokesman Lt. Col. Abdel Amir Al-Mohammadawi said. The buildings, already in ruins, were not being used by Daesh, but their capture is a landmark in the push to retake the militants’ last major stronghold in Iraq, now restricted to the heavy populated western half of Mosul. Prime Minister Haider Al-Abadi flew into Mosul to visit the troops. “Iraqis shall walk tall when the war is over,” Al-Abadi said as he arrived.
Daesh snipers continued to fire at the main government building after it was stormed, restricting the movements of the soldiers, and forces pushing further into western Mosul came under rifle and rocket fire.

Headline:        Turkey shuts down US aid group Mercy Corps as relations with Washington deteriorate

In the increasing welter of warfare in northern Syria, one of the biggest U.S.-based humanitarian organizations operating in the area has become collateral damage, at least temporarily—and perhaps a sign of worsening relations between the government of Turkey and the Trump Administration. Mercy Corps, based in Portland, Ore., and one of the biggest non-government relief organizations in the world, was abruptly told on March 7 to shut down all its operations in Turkey, which are overwhelmingly aimed at providing cross-border aid to hundreds of thousands of refugees in neighboring northern Syria. The shutdown affects some 300 relief workers. Expatriates among them would have to leave the country and local workers would be laid off. “Our hearts are broken by this turn of events, which comes after five years of cooperation with the government of Turkey and other local partners,” the relief organization said in a press release. It added that its operations inside neighboring Syria “will continue,” presumably sourced from elsewhere. The organization was given no reason for its eviction. There were no indications that other humanitarian organizations were affected by the sudden Turkish diktat. Turkey’s foreign ministry had issued no formal statements about the decision. Reuters, however, said that a Turkish government official called the decision “technical” and said that Mercy Corps had failed to meet some unspecified documentation requirements.

A senior official in Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guards on Wednesday accused the United States of provoking tensions after two separate incidents in the Gulf last week. “A US Navy ship crossing the Strait of Hormuz changed its international route and approached to within 550 meters of Revolutionary Guards’ boats in an unprofessional way,” Mehdi Hashemi told the Guard’s website Sepahnews. He said actions by the United States and the United Kingdom in recent days showed they have “harmful, illegitimate and provocative objectives.” “Not only do they not want stability and security in the Arabian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz, but they seek to create tensions and a crisis,” he said.  Meanwhile,  Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif on Wednesday made a surprise visit to Qatar where he met with the Gulf state’s emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and its top diplomat. The visit is connected to recent efforts by Kuwait to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani visited Kuwait and Oman in February.

More than 30 people have been killed after attackers dressed as doctors stormed the largest military hospital in Kabul, Afghan officials say. Militants armed with guns and grenades gained entry after one detonated explosives at a hospital gate and then opened fire on staff and patients. Commandos who landed on the Sardar Daud hospital roof killed all four attackers after several hours of fighting. The so-called Islamic State (IS) group has claimed the attack.  The Taliban has denied any involvement. More than 50 people were also wounded, the defence ministry said. President Ashraf Ghani said the attack at the 400-bed hospital “trampled all human values”. “In all religions, a hospital is regarded as an immune site and attacking it is attacking the whole of Afghanistan,” he said. The attack began at 09:00 local time (04:30 GMT). One hospital staff member who was able to get out saw an attacker “wearing a white coat holding a Kalashnikov and opening fire on everyone, including the guards, patients and doctors”.

Headline: South Sudan Renegade General Calls for Overthrow of Kiir

The risk of genocide in South Sudan has “considerably diminished” though much fighting there continues, the United Nations secretary-general said Wednesday. Antonio Guterres made the comment in response to a reporter’s question about a new U.N. report saying warning signs for genocide are in place in South Sudan. The report by the U.N. Commission on Human Rights into South Sudan describes deliberate starvation and bombardment of civilians, as well as the use of hate speech by top officials including President Salva Kiir. “We still have many incidents taking place, many fighting taking place … but the risks of genocide have considerably diminished,” Guterres said. The U.N. chief said the U.N., African Union and the regional block IGAD have a common strategy to lessen the violence in South Sudan and start an all-inclusive dialogue. He gave no details. Meanwhile, A renegade South Sudanese general says President Salva Kiir is destroying the East African nation and must be overthrown. General Thomas Cirillo Swaka spoke to VOA’s South Sudan in Focus from an undisclosed location Monday, soon after announcing the launch of a new rebel group, the National Salvation Front. “Kiir is killing our people, Kiir has betrayed the aspiration, the hope of our people,” he said. “So it is a must for the people of South Sudan … to come out at this historical juncture to see into it that Kiir is not there.”

Libya’s eastern parliament voted Tuesday to withdraw its support for a United Nations peace deal and Government of National Accord, an escalation in the fractured country’s split that stokes concerns recent violence could intensify. Abdullah Ablaihig, spokesman for the Tobruk-based, internationally recognized House of Representatives, said the body voted to annul its previous acceptance of a presidential council and the UN-backed government currently led by Prime Minister Fayez al-Serraj in Tripoli. The decision comes as Libya’s rival power centers are sliding closer to open conflict, with breakaway militias backed by western Libyan factions seizing oil terminals from the east’s strongman general, whose forces have vowed to take them back. The Tobruk body called on all Libyan parties to condemn militias that occupied the two key terminals in what it described as “terrorist attacks,” saying it was suspending its participation in peace talks until they did so.

Headline: UN envoy to Western Sahara resigns

Morocco is “more determined than ever” to develop the Western Sahara, Interior Minister Mohamed Hassad said Wednesday on a two-day visit to the disputed territory. Rabat insists the former Spanish colony is an integral part of its kingdom, but the Algeria-based Polisario Front demands a referendum on self-determination there. The two sides fought for control of the Western Sahara from 1974 to 1991, with Rabat gaining control of the territory before a UN-brokered ceasefire took effect. “We are more determined than ever to continue to develop the Sahara region,” Hassad told AFP. “Unfortunately there are many people who don’t like this, particularly the fact that we are building roads,” he said, referring to the Polisario. Hassad spoke after Morocco pulled back from the area of Guerguerat near the Mauritanian border in late February at the request of the United Nations. Tensions flared last year after the Polisario set up a new military post in the same area.

Headline: France seeks to revive Armenia-Azerbaijan peace push

Armenia’s President Serzh Sarkisian has urged international powers to step up pressure on Azerbaijan to avoid all-out war over the disputed Nagorny Karabakh region, accusing his nation’s arch-foe of military “blackmail”. “The danger of a new war is constant and will persist until Azerbaijan is persuaded that there is no military solution to the conflict,” Sarkisian told AFP in an interview ahead of a visit to France. Fears that the decades-long Nagorny Karabakh dispute could escalate have risen since sporadic firing across the volatile frontline surged last April into the worst violence since a 1994 truce. A ceasefire brokered by Moscow stilled several days of bloodshed but long-standing mediators from Russia, the United States and France have since struggled to restart a stalled peace process. Sarkisian — who will meet French President Francois Hollande in Paris on Wednesday — accused his Azerbaijani counterpart Ilham Aliyev of sabotaging any progress by threatening to start fighting unless he gets his way. “He said Azerbaijan will not start a war if Armenia fulfils its demands. I said that this is blackmail, not a compromise,” the Armenian leader said.

Headline:     Unions lead mass protests in Buenos Aires

Argentina’s most powerful unions have brought tens of thousands of people to the capital’s streets to protest against government job cuts, the lifting of restrictions on imports and other policies of President Mauricio Macri. During the march on Tuesday, organised by the CGT Labour Federation and backed by other unions, demonstrators waved banners and white and blue national flags and blocked traffic along the main avenues of Buenos Aires. Unionists also asked for salary rises to keep up with the high inflation and threatened to stage a nationwide strike in March or April if their demands are not met by Macri’s government. “We are hearing about layoffs, lack of jobs, difficulty in putting food on the table. We hope the government thinks of the most vulnerable and not only of the rich,” said Daniel Melendez of the Barrios de Pie Organisation, a movement that works in the poorest areas of Buenos Aires. Thousands of teachers also took to the streets of the capital as part of a two-day national strike demanding a wage increase.

Greek riot police fired tear gas at farmers protesting tax and pension reforms in Athens, to prevent a crowd of over 1,000 from forcing its way into the agriculture ministry. Protesters responded by throwing stones and smashing windows. Around 1,500 farmers arrived at the capital from the island of Crete to protest the low prices they are forced to sell their produce at, high production costs, and increases in taxes and social security contributions, the Greek Reporter said. A 40-member delegation headed to the agriculture ministry in central Athens, where it was joined by other farmers seeking to meet Minister of Rural Development and Food Vangelis Apostolou. According to the Greek Reporter, the protesters became infuriated after police blocked the entrance to the building with police buses, telling the farmers that the officials were not available. A number of farmers charged the building and smashed the windows of two parked police buses. Police responded with tear gas, dispersing the crowds into the side streets, Reuters reported. Two protesters were arrested, according to the Greek Reporter. The farmers have been engaged in a long-standing dispute with the left-led government over social security laws which force them to pay on imputed income upfront. Farmers have also been hit hard by higher pension contributions and enhanced production costs, triggered by the removal of tax breaks on key items like fuel and fertilizer.

Headline: Madhya Pradesh train blast: ‘Mastermind’ Al-Qasim, a self-proclaimed India ’emir’ of ‘Khorasan group’

ISIS conducted its first successful attack in India. Unidentified militants detonated a device on a train IVO Jabadiya Bheel, Madhya Pradesh, north-central India, wounding ten. The alleged leader of the group, identified as Saifullah, and one other militant engaged in a standoff with police IVO Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh more than 450 miles away. The standoff is still ongoing. ISIS’s network in India has likely strengthened as ISIS re-oriented its fighters to conduct attacks outside of core terrain. The “Khorasan module”, which was behind the Bhopal-Ujjain passenger train blast+ , had more dangerous plan up their sleeve, said an official after the overnight interrogation of the arrested members of the group on Wednesday. The “mastermind” of the train terror strike has been identified as Atif Mujaffar alias Al-Qasim, a well-off engineering student from Aligarh and the self-proclaimed ’emir’ (chief) of the so-called the “Khorasan module” in India. The “Khorasan module”, an Islamic State offshoot based near the Afghan-Pakistan border, is expanding to new areas, recruiting fighters and widening the reach of attacks in the region. Bolstered by fighters from Pakistani and other militant groups and an active social media presence, some officials said the “Khorasan module” of ISIS had become an “umbrella organization” for disparate movements. Officials said Atif had placed the timer pipe bomb on the train at Bhopal railway station injuring 10 passengers, three of them seriously, when the train was reaching Jabdi station in Shajapur district on Tuesday morning around 9.40 am.

China has proposed that North Korea suspend its tests of missile and nuclear technology to “defuse a looming crisis”. Foreign Minister Wang Yi said that in exchange, the US and South Korea could halt annual joint military drills, which consistently infuriate the North. The appeal comes after North Korea test-launched four missiles on Monday, breaking international sanctions. In response, the US began rolling out a missile defence system in South Korea. Speaking on the sidelines of China’s annual parliamentary meeting, Mr Wang said the Korean peninsula was like “two accelerating trains, coming toward each other with neither side willing to give way”. “Are the two sides really ready for a head-on collision?” he asked. A mutual halt of military operations would be the first step towards easing tensions and reopening negotiations, he said.

Headline: Russian Military Expert: ‘We Are Quietly Seeding The U.S. Shoreline With Nuclear Mole Missiles’

On February 28, Russian military expert Viktor Baranetz, a retired colonel and former defense ministry spokesman, published an article in the Russian tabloid Komsomolskaya Pravda titled “Trump-Pump-Pump And Our Big Bang.” In the article, Baranetz asserted that Russia has asymmetrical responses to the increase in the U.S. military budget. According to Baranetz, Russia is “quietly ‘seeding’ the U.S. shoreline with nuclear ‘mole’ missiles” that “dig themselves in and ‘sleep’ until they are given the command” to detonate. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed these claims. In response to a journalist’s question on Baranetz’s article, Peskov said: “This sounds strange, to say the least, and so I would suggest that you not take newspaper reports like this seriously.” “The U.S. is the permanent ‘world champion’ in the size of its military budget – almost $600 billion, which is 10 times more than Russias. Even if we add together the military budgets of the top ten countries in the world, they would not reach the American budget! Now it turns out that even that is not enough for Donald Trump. He intends to increase defense expenditure by $54 billion. This money would be enough to maintain five Polish armies. Or 10 Ukrainian ones. “The American public is already grumbling at Trump, who prefers guns to butter. But cunning Trump understands what his trump card is: He is ‘buying’ the support of the army, as well as of military industry corporations. Former Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Army Yuri Baluyevsky is certain that ‘the idea to increase defense expenditure was presented to Trump by the U.S. military, who argue a lot about the power of the Russian army, realizing this is an opportunity to get new money.’ But how will Moscow react to the growing military budget of the U.S.? Baluyevsky answers: ‘Russia will not compete with the U.S. in defense expenditure. We are in a different weight class. For us, the main question is how to ensure Russia’s defense at a lower cost. I am sure that we have already found asymmetrical responses. I don’t see a big problem here.’ “What are these mysterious ‘asymmetrical responses’ that our politicians and generals speak about so often? Maybe it’s a myth or a pretty turn of phrase? No! Our asymmetrical response is nuclear warheads that can modify their course and height so that no computer can calculate their trajectory. Or, for example, the Americans are deploying their tanks, airplanes and special forces battalions along the Russian border. And we are quietly ‘seeding’ the U.S. shoreline with nuclear ‘mole’ missiles (they dig themselves in and ‘sleep’ until they are given the command)[…] “Oh, it seems I’ve said too much. I should hold my tongue. “In short, we have something to provide an ‘asymmetrical’ (and cheaper) response to the Americans. But if Trump has money to burn, let him spend it on weapons that the U.S. may never even need. And they say Trump is a good businessman…”

Headline:        Brazil’s 2-year recession is nation’s worst on record

Brazil is in the midst of a two-year recession, the worst decline on record for the Latin America nation. Brazil’s economy decreased by 3.6 percent in one year after a 3.8 decline in 2015, according to Brazil’s statistics institute, IBGE. Unemployment has increased to 12.6 percent, a 76 percent increase in just two years, and 12.9 million people are now out of work. The nation, which hosted the Summer Olympics in 2016, has been faced with a two-fold problem — a fall in commodity prices and a political crisis. Key exports, including oil, soy and metals, have declined. Former President Dilma Rousseff was impeached for illegally manipulating government accounts. Construction company Odebrecht, implicated in the massive government bribery ring, paid the largest anti-corruption fine in history in December — at least $2.6 billion to Brazil, Switzerland and the United States.

Headline:   Thousands march against Eighth Amendment in Dublin

As women around the world wore red in solidarity with International Women’s Day, crowds in Ireland donned black and went on strike to protest against the country’s restrictive abortion laws. Traffic ground to a halt in parts of Dublin Wednesday as women and abortion rights activists sang along to Cyndi Lauper’s “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” and the Spice Girls’ “Wannabe” during a raucous dance party on O’Connell Bridge. After sundown, a second, separate demonstration — also in protest of abortion rights — commenced with Irish police estimating 10,000 to 12,000 people on the capital’s streets. Earlier in the day, demonstrators banged pots and pans and chanted “Same struggle same fight, women’s rights are workers rights.” Others carried signs saying “Get your rosaries off our ovaries” and “Yes I took a holiday for this, I’m that annoyed” as they marched through the streets of the Irish capital. People across the country walked out of their offices and joined a day of action dubbed “Strike 4 Repeal,” urging the government to hold a constitutional referendum to scrap Ireland’s eighth amendment — a measure that places the right to life of an unborn child on equal footing with the right to life of the mother. The amendment, passed in 1983, prohibits abortion even in cases of rape, incest, or ill health of the mother, allowing it to be considered only when a woman’s life is in immediate danger. At least nine Irish women on average traveled to England and Wales each day for abortions in 2015, according to UK government statistics.  While Ireland has voted before on the question of whether abortions should be legal, the restrictions remain in place. But a landmark ruling last June by the UN’s human rights committee called on the government to reform the laws.

Headline:     Madagascar Lashed by Rain, Wind from Cyclone Enawo

Headline:     Cyclone Enawo kills at least 3 in Madagascar; 500 homeles

Heavy rains and strong winds from a cyclone hit northeast Madagascar on Tuesday, raising concerns about flooding and landslides. Aid workers were on alert as Cyclone Enawo lashed the coastline. The storm was expected to move south through the island nation for several days, affecting the capital of Antananarivo along the way. Some of the worst weather occurred near Antalaha in the Sava area. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Enawo is the strongest storm to hit Madagascar since a tropical cyclone named Giovanna in 2012, according to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. The new cyclone is comparable in strength to Cyclone Ivan, which killed nearly 100 people and displaced 190,000 in 2008, the aid organization said in a statement. Northeast Madagascar had two days of heavy rain before the cyclone’s arrival, forcing some communities to evacuate, the statement said. Hundreds of volunteers have deployed in the area to help any families who lack shelter, water and other basic needs.

Headline:   ‘Trump will keep his promise to move embassy to Jerusalem’

A congressional delegation sent to Israel to examine the issue of relocating the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem arrived this weekend for a fact-finding mission to assess the practical and political implications of the move. Chairman of the House Subcommittee on National Security Ron DeSantis (R-Florida), a member of the delegation, told reporters at a press conference Sunday evening that President Trump intends to stand by his campaign pledge to move the embassy from Tel Aviv to Israel’s capital, Jerusalem. Israeli journalists have been writing articles doubting Trump’s intentions since the inauguration. According to DeSantis, Trump’s inauguration and the selection of Ambassador-Designate to Israel David Friedman were exciting moments following eight years under President Obama, during which relations between Israel and the White House were “not simple.” “The American people are excited to see the embassy move from Jerusalem after fifty years,” said DeSantis, referencing the 50th anniversary of the liberation of the Old City of Jerusalem during the 1967 Six Day War.

Headline: Netanyahu to Meet Putin, Says Iran Seeks Permanent Foothold in Syria

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he would meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Thursday to voice opposition to what the Israeli leader charged were Iran’s attempts to establish a permanent military foothold in Syria. “In the framework of a [future peace agreement] or without one, Iran is attempting to base itself permanently in Syria – either through a military presence on the ground or a naval presence – and also through a gradual attempt to open a front against us on the Golan Heights,” Netanyahu told his cabinet in public remarks on Sunday. “I will express to President Putin Israel’s vigorous opposition to this possibility,” he said. Iran, Israel’s arch-enemy, has been Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s staunchest backer and has provided militia fighters to help him. Netanyahu has said that Israel has carried out dozens of strikes to prevent weapons smuggling to the Iranian-backed Lebanese group Hezbollah via Syria. Two years ago, Israel and Russia agreed to coordinate military actions over Syria in order to avoid accidentally trading fire. “I hope that we’ll be able to reach certain understandings to lessen the possible friction between our forces and their forces, as we’ve successfully done so far,” he said at the cabinet meeting, referring to the Russian military.

Headline: In First, Conservative Synagogues Will Welcome Non-Jewish Members

The umbrella organization of Conservative synagogues passed a resolution on March 1 allowing individual congregations to decide whether to admit non-Jews as members. The resolution, the first of its kind in the Conservative movement, passed overwhelmingly with a 94-8 vote during a Special Meeting of the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism (USCJ) General Assembly, JTA reported. “USCJ, as a valued and trusted partner, is committed to assisting welcoming, vibrant, and caring Jewish communities to fully engage the spiritual gifts of all community members,” the resolution read. “We celebrate the diversity among and within our kehillot (‘congregations’ in Hebrew) and encourage the engagement of all those who seek a spiritual and communal home in an authentic and dynamic Jewish setting.” The resolution invoked a verse from the Book of Isaiah in support of its decision to allow non-Jews to join the ranks of Conservative congregations.

Headline: Ex-British PM Tony Blair in talks to become Trump’s Middle East adviser – media

Headline: Former British PM Tony Blair denies intention to be Trump’s Mideast envoy

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair has discussed becoming Donald Trump’s adviser on Middle East policies, during talks in the White House earlier this week, The Mail on Sunday reported. Blair, who was in charge of the UK government in 1997-2007, met Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner in Washington on Wednesday, the papers claims, citing it’s source. The meeting in the West Wing of the US presidential residence lasted for three hours, according to The Mail on Sunday report. It was the third time since September 2016 that Blair and Kushner have met in secrecy, The Daily Mail’s sister-paper added. The paper’s informed source said that the former British prime mister may take on the role of Kushner’s senior adviser. “Blair has been pitching hard for this job and Trump’s people are taking him very seriously,” the source added. Blair is viewed as an expert on the Middle East after being an envoy for the so-called ‘Quartet’ of the EU, US, Russia, and the UN, aimed at finding a peaceful solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In recent years, the 63-year-old was involved in business activity, also launching several foundations, including the Tony Blair Foundation in 2008.

Headline:      Liberman: Annexing Judea and Samaria would create financial, diplomatic crisis

Israeli Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, addressing a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee meeting on Monday, expressed opposition to the efforts of some other coalition members to incorporate Judea and Samaria into Israel. Liberman claimed that such a move, suggested a day earlier by Miki Zohar, a Member of Knesset in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud party, would create a diplomatic crisis for Israel with the rest of the international community. “Applying sovereignty over Judea and Samaria means accepting an extra 2,700,000 citizens, and that is before I get into international law, the political implications and the international community’s reactions that would not accept the fact that we are not granting them the right to vote,” he said. Liberman also claimed that if Israel were simply to grant residency status to some 2.7 million additional Palestinians, it would result in a major financial strain. “We must grant them at least the status of residents, like we did in east Jerusalem,” he continued. “That means Israel will have to pay them from day one, NIS 20 billion, only out of social security.” Liberman contended that Israel would also face a crisis with the Trump administration if it annexed the region.

Headline:        Fierce clashes between rebel, militant groups on Lebanon’s outskirts

Fierce clashes Monday erupted between a Free Syrian Army rebel faction and a militant group on the outskirts of Lebanon, Hezbollah-linked media reported. The clashes were situated in the Lebanese border village of Khirbet Daoud on the outskirts of the northeastern town of Arsal, the Hezbollah-linked Media War Center said in a tweet. It said that clashes were between fighters from Jabhat Fatah al-Sham – previously the Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front – and Saraya Ahl al-Sham. Fatah al-Sham and Daesh (ISIS) militants have previously engaged in similar intermittent clashes on Arsal’s outskirts since January over territorial disputes. Meanwhile, the National News Agency reported that the Lebanese Army shelled militant posts on the outskirts of Arsal. The Lebanese Army and Hezbollah have pounded the militants with artillery fire in the rugged border region on a near daily basis for more than a year to keep them at bay.

Headline:   US conducts more than 40 anti-terror air strikes in Yemen in 5 days

The US has heavily ramped up its air strikes against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), US officials said Monday. The Islamist terrorists have taken advantage of Yemen’s civil war turmoil to establish themselves in key urban areas. US Ambassador to Yemen Matthew Tueller said that Washington is currently carrying out a vigorous campaign on Al Qaeda and ISIS in Yemen, aiming at destroying these two terrorist organizations. Since the beginning of the Trump residency, the number of US air strikes mainly with drones has outstripped the number conducted in the whole of 2016.

Headline:   Syrian fighters cut key supply route to Daesh-held Raqqa

US-backed forces in Syria on Monday cut off a key supply route between the Daesh group’s stronghold Raqqa and its territory in Deir Ezzor province, a commander and a monitor said.
The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters, seized control of the only major road linking Raqqa along the Euphrates valley to Deir Ezzor, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitoring group said. “The route… linking Raqqa to Deir Ezzor was cut this morning,” an SDF commander confirmed. The SDF launched its offensive for Raqqa — the de facto Syrian capital of Daesh’s so-called caliphate — in early November and has since seized swathes of territory in northern Syria from the jihadists.

Headline: Deir Ezzor offensive turns disastrous as the Syrian Army faces fierce ISIS resistance

Earlier today, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched an assault on the southern sector of Deir Ezzor in a bid to link up with besieged government troops at Deir Ezzor Airbase. Led by the 104th Airborne Brigade of the Republican Guard, the National Defence Forces (NDF) and 137th Mechanized Brigade of the 17th Reserve Division, Syrian government troops attacked Tall Aloush, a strategic hill in the cemetery area, and engaged in a fierce battle with ISIS militants defending the high point. However, by late afternoon on Monday, Islamic State forces had thoroughly repelled the SAA’s offensive; at least 10 Syrian soldiers were killed-in-action while ISIS only sustained a handful of casualties. Regardless, joint Syrian and Russian airstrikes targeted ISIS insurgents held up at the Al-Sanouf hill, Al-Rawad hill, Al-Rashdiyah district, Al-Baghiliyah village, hill 17 and the Al-Sinaa suburb. Should the SAA take control of Tall Aloush in a renewed attack, this advance would pave to reach Deir Ezzor Airbase. The city’s airport was cutoff from government-held districts in downtown Deir Ezzor following an Islamic State offensive in January.

The Pentagon announced Tuesday, March 6, that a US armored convoy was deployed around the disputed northern Syrian town of Manbij, and in an unusual move, released a video depicting the convoy and its men. A US military spokesman tweeted that the US deployment was a deliberate action taken to assure that forces within the US-led coalition deterred aggression and kept the focus on defeating ISIS. Affirming that the US-led coalition was aware of the location of Russian-backed Syrian forces, Pentagon spokesman Captain Jeff Davis told reporters Monday. “They are certainly aware of where we are, and we are aware of where they are. There is no intention between the two of there being any conflict against any party other than ISIS.” debkafile’s military sources report that the US armored force landed in the middle of a complicated crisis around the important town of Manjib, ever since a mixed Kurdish-Syrian Arab force captured it from ISIS last year with US air and military support.

Headline:   US-backed Iraqi forces capture Mosul bridge, close in on government buildings

Headline:   Rojava receives 17,000 Iraqi refugees as fight in Western Mosul intensifies

US-backed Iraqi forces captured the second of Mosul’s five bridges on Monday, giving a boost to their onslaught on Islamic State’s remaining stronghold in the western part of the city. All of Mosul’s five bridges over the Tigris have been destroyed but their capture facilitates the movement of forces progressing alongside the river, which cuts Mosul in two. The bridge seized, Al-Hurriya, is the second after one located further south. Its capture shields the back of the forces advancing toward a nearby government buildings complex. “We control the western end of the bridge,” said a senior media officer with Rapid Response, the elite unit of the Interior Ministry leading the charge toward the complex. Recapturing the site would help Iraqi forces attack the militants in the old city. It would also mark a symbolic step toward restoring state authority over Mosul, even though the buildings are destroyed and not being used by Daesh. The battle of Mosul, which started on Oct. 17, will enter an more complicated phase in the densely populated old city.

Headline:     UN Court Reports Turkey to Security Council

A United Nations court has referred Turkey to the Security Council for failing to release a judge imprisoned for suspected involvement in last year’s failed coup. The Mechanism for International Criminal Tribunals (MICT) had given Turkey until February 14 to release Aydin Sefa Akay, a Turkish national who was due to hear a request for the case of a Rwandan genocide convict to be reopened. “The government of Turkey has failed to comply with its obligations,” Judge Theodor Meron said in a written ruling Monday. “This matter shall be reported to the United Nations Security Council.” Akay was one of more than 40,000 people arrested in the aftermath of the failed July coup against President Recep Tayipp Erdogan. Turkey has alleged the coup attempt was orchestrated by exiled Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen. Gulen, who lives in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, has denied any role in the attempted overthrow of the Turkish leader.

Headline: Trump and Netanyahu discuss Iranian threat

Continuing a pattern of provocative actions, Iran this weekend test-fired a pair of ballistic missiles and sent fast-attack vessels close to a U.S. Navy ship in the Strait of Hormuz, U.S. officials confirmed to Fox News. One of Iran’s ballistic missile tests were successful, destroying a floating barge approximately 155 miles away, two U.S. officials with knowledge of the launch told Fox News. The launches of the Fateh-110 short-range ballistic missiles were the first tests of the missile in two years, one official said. It was not immediately clear if this was the first successful test at sea — raising concerns for the U.S. Navy, which operates warships in the area, one of which had an “unsafe and unprofessional” interaction with Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. boats on Saturday. The IRGC boats approached to within 600 yard of the tracking ship USNS Invincible and then stopped, officials confirmed to Fox News. The Invincible was accompanied by three ships from the British Royal Navy and all four ships were forced to change course, Reuters reported.

Headline: Taliban main factor for the foreign forces presence, Ghani

An Afghan official says that alleged Islamic State militants killed four police officers in an attack on a security post in eastern Nangarhar province. Attaullah Khogyani, spokesman for the provincial governor, said the attack took place early Monday morning in the Achin District. Five police officers were wounded and eight militant attackers were killed. There has been no claim of responsibility but Khogyani blamed the local affiliate of the Islamic State group. IS has been active in Afghanistan’s eastern provinces, launching several similar attacks in recent months. Meanwhile, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said Monday that Taliban insurgents are the main reason for the continuing presence of foreign troops in Afghanistan. Ghani, speaking at the annual opening ceremony of the Afghan parliament, said that the Afghan government asked for the extension of the foreign military mission largely because of the ongoing militant threat. “Those Taliban who are killing our people are the enemies of our nation, as are Daesh (Islamic State group) and other terrorist groups,” Ghani told the parliamentarians. He claimed that there were 20 different militant insurgent groups, including the Taliban, operating in the country. Meanwhile, an extended battle was underway Monday between Taliban fighters and Afghan security forces in the southern province of Kandahar’s Nash district, according to Zia Durrani, spokesman for the Kandahar provincial police chief. The attack started Sunday and continued into Monday, Durrani said, adding that at least six police officers have been killed and around 15 wounded. He estimated that 15 Taliban fighters have been killed and more than 30 wounded. “The reinforcements have arrived, but right now the clash is near the Nash district headquarters,” said Durrani. Qari Yosouf Ahmadi, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack.

Libyan armed forces based in the east launched more airstrikes Saturday against militias that seized oil terminals a day earlier, a spokesman said, accusing troops from the country’s rival west of launching a war. Three strikes hit vehicles and targets in the area around the al-Sidra and Ras Lanuf terminals, where at least nine soldiers were killed in Friday’s attack that drove out the army troops despite earlier air strikes supporting them, Col. Ahmed Mosmary, spokesman for forces commanded by army chief Gen. Khalifa Haftar said. The army has deployed more forces in preparation of a counterattack to drive out the militias, known as Benghazi Defense Brigades, which are comprised of Islamic militants and former rebels recently defeated by Haftar’s forces in Benghazi, Libya’ second largest city, he said. They’re also joined by militiamen from the western city of Misrata. “This is a war against a whole region,” he said, referring to Libya’s east. “They will not win.”

Headline:   In day of pro-Trump rallies, California march turns violent

Headline:  Loretta Lynch: Need more marching, blood, death on streets

Supporters of Donald Trump clashed with counter-protesters at a rally in the famously left-leaning city of Berkeley, California, on a day of mostly peaceful gatherings in support of the U.S. president across the country. At a park in Berkeley, across the bay from San Francisco, protesters from both sides struck one another over the head with wooden sticks and Trump supporters fired pepper spray as police in riot gear stood at a distance. Some in the pro-Trump crowd, holding American flags, faced off against black-clad opponents. An elderly Trump supporter was struck in the head and kicked on the ground. Organizers of the so-called Spirit of America rallies in at least 28 the country’s 50 states had said they expected smaller turn-outs than the huge crowds of anti-Trump protesters that clogged the streets of Washington and other cities the day after the Republican’s inauguration on Jan. 20. “There are a lot of angry groups protesting and we thought it was important to show our support,” said Peter Boykin, president of Gays for Trump, who helped organize Saturday’s rally in Washington. In many towns and cities, the rallies did not draw more than a few hundred people. At some, supporters of the president were at risk of being outnumbered by small groups of anti-Trump protesters who gathered to shout against the rallies.

Headline:    Armed groups prevent Mali interim government’s installation in Timbuktu

Armed groups surrounded Timbuktu on Monday, the defense ministry said, preventing Malian interim authorities from being installed there under a peace pact meant to end years of lawlessness. The return of state authority to the city was supposed to fill a vacuum that has turned northern Mali into a launch pad for jihadi attacks across the vast region bordering on the Sahara Desert. Banks, schools and shops were shuttered and the city’s streets nearly deserted, barring patrols by U.N. peacekeepers, and residents reported sporadic gunfire that had petered out by the afternoon. “Armed groups opposed to the interim authorities, which should have been put in place today, are positioned around the city and are threatening to take it over,” Defence Ministry spokesman Colonel Abdoulaye Sidibe said by telephone. He said the arrival of the new authorities had been postponed and negotiations were under way. A Reuters cameraman saw fighters standing on sandbags and wielding rocket launchers at an official checkpoint, their faces wrapped with turbans to protect them against the blowing sand. Most government posts have been unfilled since ethnic Tuareg separatists and desert jihadists took over northern Mali in 2012, before French forces intervened to push them back. A peace deal signed in 2015 was meant to enable authorities to return. But pro and anti-government Tuareg-dominated armed factions had been quarrelling for months over how the authorities should be constituted – until a breakthrough two weeks ago. Last week, authorities were installed in the towns of Kidal – seen as the north’s most recalcitrant bastion of Tuareg separatism – and Menaka.

Headline:    EU ministers agree to create joint military command center in NATO footsteps

The European Union is to create a special military command center for operating foreign missions, the German defense minister announced amid criticism from some bloc members that the initiative is financially unreasonable and merely copies NATO’s steps. EU foreign ministers “founded, or put in motion, today a European command center for foreign missions,” German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said at a meeting in Brussels on Monday, according to AP. Membership in the program is not obligatory, von der Leyen stressed, adding that EU members not wishing to take part could act as observers. “For those who are not members of the European Union, like for example Norway or the British, there will be the possibility to join in selectively with certain projects or missions,” she said. “The Norwegians have great interest in this, the British have great interest in this,” the German minister noted. Meanwhile, Britain has long criticized the bloc’s aspirations to launch its own army, saying the EU should not waste money on creating structures that match those set up by NATO. British Defense Secretary Michael Fallon, who was also present at the meeting, called on other EU ministers “to cooperate more closely with NATO to avoid unnecessary duplication and structures.” Nevertheless, von der Leyen called the move “a very important step” that “was long overdue.” “We took a very important step toward a European security and defense union, because we have become very concrete,” she said.

Headline: Ukraine Asks UN Judges to Order Russia to Stop Aiding Rebels

Ukraine asked the United Nations’ highest court on Monday to order Russia to stop funding and equipping pro-Russian separatists, at the start of a hearing where it hopes to prove Moscow is breaking international law. Russia denies sending troops or military equipment to eastern Ukraine and is expected to challenge the basis of the case Ukraine has launched at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. “Today I stand before the World Court to request protection of the basic human rights of Ukrainian people,” Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Olena Zerkal said on the first of four days of hearings. Zerkal requested an immediate court order to stop what she called Russia’s abuses until the judges have heard the case in full. The U.N. court takes years to hear cases. Although its rulings are final and binding, it has no means of enforcement. Zerkal’s request for so-called provisional measures, included a halt of transfers of money, weapons, vehicles, equipment, training or personnel to pro-Russian separatists fighting Ukrainian government forces. “Russian Federation tactics include support for terrorism and acts of racial discrimination, as well as propaganda, subversion, intimidation, political corruption and cyber attacks,” she told the judges, citing new attacks in recent weeks.

Headline:     Security, rebels clash near Mynamar-China border; 30 dead

About 30 people died Monday in clashes between ethnic rebels and Myanmar security in an area along the border with China, the government said. Authorities said five civilians, five police officers and at least 20 rebel fighters died in the town of Laukkai, in the Kokang region. The rebel group, Myanmar Nationalities Democratic Alliance Army, is fighting Myanmar’s armed forces in the region. “According to initial information, many innocent civilians including a primary school teacher … were killed because of attacks by the MNDAA armed group,” the office of Myanmar’s de facto leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, said in a statement. The Northern Alliance, a multi-faction rebel group that includes the MNDAA, said the attack was carried out in “self-defense” of the Myanmar military’s operation since December.

Headline:       Russia’s developing 100 megaton dirty Tsunami Creating submarine drone bomb

“The Russian government daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta reported that to achieve ‘extensive radioactive contamination’ the weapon ‘could envisage using the so-called cobalt bomb, a nuclear weapon designed to produce enhanced amounts of radioactive fallout compared to a regular atomic warhead,'” Schneider said. Retired Air Force Gen. Robert Kehler, former commander of the U.S. Strategic Command, has said development of the underwater nuclear strike vehicle is one element of a “troubling” Russian strategic nuclear buildup. Rep. Mike Rogers (R., Ala.), chairman of the House subcommittee on strategic forces, has said that the Russians assert the nuclear drone submarine will be used to target coastal areas and inflict “unacceptable damage to a country’s territory by creating areas of wide radioactive contamination that would be unsuitable for military, economic, or other activity for long periods of time.” Russia calls the system “Ocean Multipurpose System ‘Status-6,” and it is allegedly capable of traveling underwater to distances of to 6,200 miles. It can submerge to depths of 3,280 feet and travel at speeds of up to 56 knots. The Pentagon has confirmed that a new Russian nuclear delivery drone is real. The undersea drone, which carries an enormous nuclear warhead to destroy coastal cities and military bases, was tested late last month. Reports from Russia indicate the bomb could be armed with a “salted bomb”, or one that “salts the Earth” with the dangerous isotope Cobalt-60. Such a bomb could spread such high levels of radioactivity it would prevent anyone from using the attack zone for approximately 100 years. Depending on location and prevailing weather conditions, such an explosion would also carry vast amounts of radiation inland.

Headline: North Korea likely preparing to strike U.S. military bases in Japan

North Korea has reportedly launched four missiles into the Sea of Japan, three of which landed in Japanese territorial waters. Earlier, the Yonhap news agency reported that North Korea had fired a single “unidentified projectile” off the country’s east coast. After reviewing data, the South Korean military revised the count to four projectiles, Reuters reported. The military is trying to determine the type of rocket that was tested, but the South Korean agency has already cited an unnamed military official as saying it “could” have been an intercontinental ballistic missile “capable of reaching the US mainland.” “We estimate the North fired four ballistic missiles. We are conducting an analysis (with the US) on the missiles to determine their type and other specifications. It will take a while before we can come up with a final analysis (based on US satellite data),” South Korea’s Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement. Meanwhile, an anonymous US military official who spoke to Reuters, emphasized that there are no indications so far that North Korea tested an intercontinental ballistic missile. The projectiles were launched early Monday morning at 7:36 am local time from the Dongchang-ri long-range missile site, Yonhap reported citing S. Korea’s military. The unidentified objects flew across the country for about 1,000 kilometers before plunging into the East Sea. Tokyo has lodged a “strong protest” with North Korea over the projectile tests.

Headline:     “The Reality Is, Half Of Americans Can’t Afford To Write A $500 Check”

According to a recent Bankrate survey of 1,000 adults, 57% of Americans don’t have enough cash to cover a mere $500 unexpected expense. Turns out the CEO was right. And while that may appear dire, it is a slight improvement from 2016, when 63% of U.S. residents said they wouldn’t be able to handle such an expense. The survey’s findings have shed light on how the so-called recovery of the past 8 years has skipped about half of the US population, which literally live paycheck to paycheck, and reflects a country in which many households continue to struggle with their basic finances more than seven years after the official end to the recession. Putting the numbers in context: despite steady job growth during the Obama administration – which have been focused on minimum wage industries – wages have been predictably slow to recover, with the typical American household still earning 2.4% below what they brought home in 1999, when income peaked. Meanwhile, costs for essentials such as housing and child care have surged faster than the rate of inflation, placing stress on household budgets and making the accumulation of wealth, i.e., savings, impossible. The bottom line:  About four out of 10 Americans said they had enough in savings to cover a surprise $500 expense. Another 21% said they would rely on a credit card, while 20% said they’d cut back on other expenses. Another 11% said they’d turn to family or friends for the money. What is even more striking is that among Americans who earn more than $75,000 per year – a third more than the typical U.S. household earns – almost half also said they wouldn’t be able to cover a $500 surprise expense. Ironically, Millennials represent the generation most equipped to handle an emergency cost, with 47 percent saying they have enough in savings to cover one. The Bankrate survey findings echoed research published last year by the Federal Reserve, which found that 46% of respondents said they would be challenged to come up with even less, or $400, to cover an emergency expense, and would likely borrow or sell something to afford it. When the Fed asked what types of emergency expenses Americans had actually faced in the last year, more than one out of five cited a major unexpected medical expense. The average expense: $2,782, or almost seven times higher than the Fed’s hypothetical $400 surprise bill.

Headline:     Israel moves toward decriminalizing marijuana use

Holy smokes! The Israeli government has taken a step toward decriminalizing marijuana use. Israeli media say Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Cabinet has approved a measure that would reduce penalties for possession of marijuana. If caught, smokers would pay a fine, instead of facing criminal charges. Netanyahu said ahead of Sunday’s meeting that a “new enforcement policy” should be drawn up “cautiously and in a controlled manner.” The decision does not mean that Jerusalem will now have Amsterdam-style coffee shops. The Haaretz daily said a committee would study ways to regulate the use of pot. Opposition lawmaker Tamar Zandberg told Haaretz: “This is an important step, but not the end of the road. It sends a message that a million Israelis who consume marijuana aren’t criminals.”

Headline:   Powerful aftershock leaves one killed, 41 injured in Mindanao city

One person was killed and 41 injured on Sunday when a powerful aftershock hit a southern Philippine city still recovering from a quake last month, authorities said. The 5.9-magnitude quake struck the southern city of Surigao and surrounding areas, causing two houses and several walls to collapse, government seismologists and civil defense officers said. A 65-year-old woman died of a heart attack while 41 people were treated for injuries mostly caused by falling objects, civil defense officials said. The quake also knocked out power for several hours in the city of 152,000 people. It was just one of over a hundred aftershocks to hit Surigao City on Mindanao island since a 6.5-magnitude quake on Feb. 10 left eight dead and over 250 injured. Its epicenter was outside Surigao City in the same area as the epicenter of last month’s tremor, the government seismology office said.

Headline:  IDF strikes Hamas in Gaza after terrorists’ gunfire and rocket attacks

Israel strikes Hamas positions in Gaza after terrorists shot at an IDF unit operating on the border fence with Gaza, damaging an army vehicle. Palestinian terrorists fired at an IDF unit operating on the border fence with the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. No Israelis were harmed in the attack, but an IDF tractor was hit. This attack comes just hours after Palestinian terrorists fired a rocket from Gaza at Israel’s civilian population. The rocket exploded in an open space, causing no casualties or damage. It was the second rocket attack from Gaza this week and the fifth attack in the past month. In total, terrorists fired nine rockets at Israel over this time period. In response,  Israel’s Air Force (IAF) and an IDF tank bombed two Hamas positions in Gaza.

Headline:     UN chief urged to add IDF to blacklist

A network of humanitarian organizations urged the United Nations to add the IDF to the blacklist of countries and armed groups responsible for grave violations against children. Formed in 2001, Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict released its annual report ahead of the release of the United Nations’ annual report on children and armed conflict. The United Nations’ report, which contains the blacklist, is usually released in May or June. Watchlist recommended that 11 parties be added to the blacklist, and that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres collect further information on several others, including on the Popular Front of the Liberation of Palestine and the armed wing of Hamas, Izzadin Kassam, to determine whether or not they should be included in next year’s report. The network’s explanation focused on the 2014 Operation Protective Edge, fought between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, stating that “attacks in Gaza have not ceased.” The IDF was kept off the list in 2015 after lobbying by the US and Israel. The section on Israeli offenses is nine pages long, while the sections on PFLP and Izzadin Kassam are one and three paragraphs long, respectively. According to Watchlist, it has recommended listing the IDF since 2005 for “killing and maiming children and attacking schools and hospitals in Gaza and the West Bank.”

Headline:  Jewish cemetery vandalized in Rochester, NY

Headline:  Arrest made in national threats to Jewish community centers

Dozens of bomb threats have been called into Jewish institutions since early January, and scores of headstones at two Jewish cemeteries—one near St. Louis, the other in Philadelphia— were desecrated in February. But is there actually a rising tide of anti-Semitism in America? Despite the threats and attacks, positive feelings between different American religious groups are on the rise, as measured in mid-to-late January by the well-respected and non-partisan Pew Foundation. Additionally, far more damaging anti-Semitic incidents took place throughout the preceding decade and a half than the ones garnering attention in recent weeks. During the past two months, there have been nearly 100 documented acts of anti-Semitism across North America, including at least 90 bomb threats—mostly at Jewish community centers (JCCs)—and the two cemetery attacks. Running parallel to these anti-Jewish hate crimes has been a groundswell of anger directed at President Donald Trump for allegedly failing to swiftly or sufficiently denounce anti-Semitism. Some critics have labeled the president an anti-Semite and claimed he is responsible for unleashing a wave of religious hatred.

Headline:     Abbas to visit Moscow in May

Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas will reportedly visit Moscow in May, the Ma’an news agency reported Thursday, citing the PA’s envoy to Russia Abd al-Hafith Nawfal said on Wednesday. Nawfal was quoted as having said that Abbas would discuss the Israel-Arab peace process with Russian officials, as well as the United States’ stance on the conflict. Russia has expressed an interest in mediating Israel-Palestinian Authority peace talks which have been frozen for more than two years. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said several months ago that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to host an Israeli-Palestinian summit to revive the talks. Several days later, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Putin held a telephone conversation in which they discussed the peace process, among other things, though a Kremlin spokesman later clarified there was “nothing concrete” yet on a meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu. Most recently, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said his country is waiting for Israeli and Palestinian Arab proposals on holding a direct meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu.

Headline:  Chief Rabbi Sets Value for Biblical Half-Shekel, Paving the Way for the Temple’s Comeback

In another essential step forward towards practically bringing the Third Temple, the Chief Sephardi Rabbi of Israel has set the current value of the Biblical half shekel every Jewish male was required to give to the Temple. This mitzvah (Torah commandment), performed in a merely symbolic manner for 2,000 years, is making a rapid comeback in many ways. Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef issued a letter on Wednesday in response to inquiries from the public as to what sum to give to charity as a gesture symbolizing the Biblical commandment. In the days of the Temple, every male in Israel was obligated to donate a half-shekel of silver in the beginning of the month of Adar, which began on Wednesday. Based on the present market value of silver, Rabbi Yosef set the value of the Biblical half shekel at 23 NIS, or $6.23. The rabbi addressed the modern tradition of giving charity in place of this donation, which in Biblical times was used to pay for the operating expenses of the Temple. “Wise men throughout the generations have been accustomed to commemorate this mitzvah,” Rabbi Yosef wrote in the letter. “But it is important to say that the money is a donation and not an atonement. Similarly, when giving the money, it is important to emphasize that it is in memory of the mitzvah, and not the actual mitzvah. As such, the giving of this money in our times is not a requirement or a mitzvah.”

Headline:      Hizballah lists targeted Israeli “nuclear sites”

Hizballah’s latest round of threats against Israel reached a new peak Thursday, March 2, with the release of a videotape claiming to expose nine locations allegedly tied to the production and assembly of Israel’s nuclear weapons, debkafile reports. The Lebanese Shiite terror organization said it possessed precise missiles for wiping out Israel’s nuclear infrastructure and attached addresses to all its targets. Five locations topped the list, starting with the nuclear reactors at Dimona in southern Israel and Nahal Soreq on the Mediterranean coast. “Revealed” next are three secret locations for the production, assembly and storage of nuclear missiles and warheads. Kfar Zacharia near Beit Shemesh in the Jerusalem Hills, defined as the main depot for the Jericho Series I, II and III, of three-stage ballistic missiles, which can reach ranges of up to 6,000km. Two others were a factory in Beer Yaakov near the central Israeli town of Ramleh, the alleged production site for nuclear warheads; and the “Galilee Wing-20” plant at the Tefen Industrial Park, 17km from the town of Carmiel, a facility where the Rafael Advanced Defense System Authority was said to mount nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles and prepare them for launching. The video stresses that Hizballah now possesses precise missiles able to pinpoint and destroy every single facility. Just two weeks ago, Nasrallah “advised” Israel in an aggressive speech, to dismantle its large ammonia tank in Haifa and the nuclear reactor in Dimona before they were hit by Hizballah rockets and caused massive casualties. He and his associates have repeatedly warned in recent weeks that their Lebanese terrorist group has acquired weapons capable of deterring Israel as well as the capability to catch Israeli intelligence unawares by “surprises.”

Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, originally sentenced to life in prison for murdering 239 demonstrators who protested against his rule, was declared innocent by Egypt’s highest court. Egypt’s supreme court, the Court of Cassation, found former President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, innocent of charges for the killing of 239 protesters during an 18-day revolt that ousted him from power in early 2011. “The court has found the defendant innocent,” said Judge Ahmed Abdel Qawi on Thursday. Mubarak was originally sentenced in 2012 to life in prison for conspiracy to murder 239 demonstrators who had revolted against his rule. His conviction was overturned by an appeals court in 2013 that led to his retrial in which a Cairo court dropped charges against Mubarak and his senior officials. The prosecution filed an appeal leading to Thursday’s ruling by Egypt’s Court of Cassation.

Headline:  Syrian opposition accepts UN principles at end of peace talks

The lead Syrian opposition negotiator at peace talks in Geneva said he hoped U.S. President Donald Trump would correct the “catastrophic” errors of his predecessor Barack Obama to become a reliable partner against “devilish” Iran. The U.N.-led negotiations edged forwards on Wednesday, for the first time in six days, as both sides saw hope of shaping the agenda to their liking, but with indirect talks wrapping up this weekend there is little prospect of any real breakthrough. “The people in Syria paid a high price because of the catastrophic mistakes made by the Obama administration,” Nasr al-Hariri told reporters in a briefing after meeting U.N. mediator Staffan de Mistura. “Obama lied and he didn’t keep any of the promises he made for the Syrian people. He drew red lines that he erased himself, he kept silent on crimes committed by Bashar al-Assad.” Trump has said his priority is to fight Islamic State, which has left Russia in the diplomatic driving seat and put Russia, Turkey and Iran in charge of overseeing a shaky ceasefire. He has also made it clear he wants to rein in Tehran’s regional ambitions. Trump’s administration has so far done little to suggest it is willing to engage in finding a political solution for Syria. “Their policy is still unknown,” said a Western diplomat at the talks. “They are almost not here.”

Five children and two women are receiving treatment for exposure to chemical agents near the Iraqi city of Mosul, where Islamic State is fighting U.S.-backed Iraqi forces, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Friday. The ICRC “condemns in the strongest possible terms the use of chemical weapons during fighting around the Iraqi city of Mosul”, it said in a statement. The agency’s statement did not say which side used the chemical agents that caused blisters, redness in the eyes, irritation, vomiting, and coughing. The United States has warned that Islamic State could use weapons containing sulfur mustard agents to repel the offensive on the northern Iraqi city. ICRC medical teams were supporting local medical teams treating the seven patients, who were admitted over the past two days to Rozhawa hospital in Erbil, east of Mosul, the organization said. The Islamic State used chemical weapons at least 52 times in Iraq and Syria and at least 19 times in the areas around Mosul between 2014 and November 2016, according to data collected by IHS Markit. The ICRC had reinforced 13 medical centers in areas surrounding Mosul, some with capacity to treat gas attacks victims, ahead of the offensive that started in October.

Headline:  PMU threatens to break all Peshmerga sieges on Yazidi people

The predominately Shi’ite Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) has announced that they will conduct operations against the Peshmerga and ISIS who are besieging the Yazidi people in Iraq’s Sinjar region. This follows on from this morning’s events where clashes between the Rojava Peshmerga who are loyal to Iraqi Kurdistan’s President Masou Barzni, and the Yazidi Shingal Resistance Units (YBS), who are trained by the Turkey based Kurdistan Workers Party and oppose Barzani’s relations with Turkish President Erdogan. The ensuing fight left at least four Peshmerga fighters taken prisoner by the Yazidi Units while one YBS fighter has been killed and three injured in clashes, Kom News reported. The PMU highlighted on their Twitter that the Peshmerga attack on the Yazidis was unprovoked, and will pay a heavy price for betraying them. The militia that has been one of the most effective fighting forces in fighting ISIS, then announced their consideration of new operations to dismantle all Peshmerga and ISIS siege on the Yazidi people. This is the first time in which Barzani’s forces has been directly threatened by the PMU.

Headline:   Turkey says Berlin working against bid to boost Erdogan powers

Headline:  ‘Learn to behave’: Ankara outraged over Germany’s cancelation of Turk rallies

Turkey on Friday accused Germany of working for a “No” vote ahead of an April referendum on whether to boost President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s powers in an executive presidency. “They don’t want Turkey to campaign here, they are working for a ‘No’. They want to get in the way of a strong Turkey,” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters in Ankara after German local authorities blocked rallies where Turkish ministers were due to speak. The Turkish public will vote on April 16 on whether to create a system which Ankara says will be like that of France and the United States and ensure political stability. However, critics say the system will weaken parliament further and lead to one-man rule. Tensions have increased in recent days between Turkey and Berlin after Ankara’s provisional detention of a German journalist on terrorism-related charges on Monday.

Iran

Headline:  Arab Nations Face Stark Choice: Israel or Iran

Two very different dialogue proposals are on the table for the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, one from a historic enemy, Israel, proposed in conjunction with a crucial partner, the United States. The other is from a historic rival, Iran, which shares the same neighborhood and faith. The choice the Arab countries ultimately make could determine the future peace and prosperity of the region. On February 15, President Donald Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House and during a press conference, both leaders hinted at an approaching Arab-Israeli cooperation. A few days later, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated Iran’s previously proposed regional platform for dialogue between the Islamic Republic and its Persian Gulf neighbors during a speech at the Munich Security Conference. The U.S.-Israel proposal encompasses almost all Arab States, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as Egypt, Jordan and possibly Lebanon and Tunisia. This proposal’s principal objective is a wider Arab-Israeli peace agreement and an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, the key selling point behind this initiative is mutual concerns regarding Iran, and the proposal has a goal to present a unified front against the Islamic Republic. The primary goal of Iran’s proposal is to decrease tensions and increase cooperation between neighbors. “The forum can promote understanding under a broad spectrum of issues, including confidence and security building measures, and combating terrorism, extremism, and sectarianism,” Zarif said. “It could also encourage practical cooperation in areas ranging from the protection of the environment to join investments and tourism. Such a forum could eventually develop into a more formal non-aggression and security cooperation arrangements.” This proposal is not new. Zarif put it forward shortly after finalizing the nuclear deal in an article on Al-Monitor titled “Choose your neighbors before your house,” and traveled to Qatar and Kuwait shortly afterward.

Headline:   Airstrike Kills Key Afghan Taliban Commander

Headline:  Another northern Afghan district falls to the Taliban

Senior Taliban officials say a suspected American drone strike has killed a key Taliban commander who told captured U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl “Don’t come back to Afghanistan” moments before releasing him to the U.S. military in a prisoner swap three years ago. The U.S. military, however, told VOA Friday, “Neither U.S. forces Afghanistan nor Resolute Support conducted any strikes in Pakistan or in border areas of Afghanistan on Thursday.” Taliban sources confirmed Friday that slain Qari Abdullah Mairaj was among two men hit by what the Taliban believes were U.S. missiles the previous day in the southeastern Afghan province of Khost, bordering Pakistan. The insurgent group agreed to free Bergdahl after nearly five years in captivity in exchange for five Taliban members from the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Headline:     Ethiopia: Despite Nationwide State of Emergency, Several Border Incursions Leave More Than 100 Dead in East and South East Ethiopia

Despite a six month nationwide state of emergency declared in Oct. 2016 and was hoped to restore a military style law and order throughout the country, weeks-long cross border incursions by armed militiamen into many localities in eastern and southern part of Oromia, (bordering the Ethiopian Somali regional state, in east and south east Ethiopia) have left more than 100 people dead and the destruction of unknown amount of properties, a local resident said in a phone interview with Addis Standard. According to Abdurrahman Dubaa, a resident of Chinaksan town in east Hararghe, some 630km east of the capital Addis Abeba, many of the militiamen conducting cross border raids in various localities, including Chinaksan, Babile, Gursum and several other villages, are members of the Liyu Police, a special paramilitary force set up by the Somali regional state with the help of the federal government to counter rebel groups operating in the restive Ogaden region in eastern Ethiopia, and are stationed in and around Ethiopia’s Somali regional state.

Libya

Headline:         East Libyan forces clash with rivals near oil ports

East Libyan forces said they carried out air strikes and clashed with rival factions on Friday close to major oil terminals as they sought to fend off the latest challenge to their control of the ports. The strikes were carried out south of the coastal town of Nawfiliya in response to an attack by the Benghazi Defense Brigades (BDB), according to spokesmen for the eastern air force and for the local Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG). A military spokesman said the attack had been repelled. Nawfiliya is about 50 km (30 miles) west of the oil port Es Sider and 75 km (50 miles) west of another terminal, Ras Lanuf. An oil official at Ras Lanuf said the port was under PFG authority but that there was fighting close to Es Sider. A second port source said operations at the ports had not been affected. Es Sider and Ras Lanuf are among four ports that the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) took control of in September.

Tunisia

Headline:       Berlin truck attack prompts accord between Germany, Tunisia

Tunisia agreed Friday to speed its acceptance of 1,500 citizens whose asylum applications were rejected by Germany, accepting a 250-million-euro ($264 million) loan to help develop rural regions and create jobs for young people. The agreement between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi comes in the wake of the fatal attack in Berlin carried out by a Tunisian who drove a truck into a Christmas market, killing 12 and injuring dozens of others. Anis Amri’s asylum request was rejected, but Germany has said Tunisian bureaucratic delays meant he hadn’t yet been expelled. Amri, who was later shot dead in Italy, had pledged fealty to the Islamic State group. Merkel said she and Essebsi agreed Friday that the identities of some 1,500 Tunisian asylum-seekers rejected by Germany would be resolved by Tunisia within 30 days. Germany will help Tunisia set up a registration system, and identity papers are expected to be issued within a week. The two leaders did not specify whether the accord would only deal with people believed to be illegal migrants or also those suspected of radicalization. But Merkel evoked the chaos in neighboring Libya and said Germany would contribute to a system of surveillance on the 500-kilometer (300-mile) border Tunisia and Libya share.

Algeria & Morocco

Headline:         Western Sahara: An Isolated Algeria Could Spark a War with Morocco

While Morocco has made all the right moves to avoid a military clash with the Polisario militia near the Mauritanian borders, it fell short of communicating to the UN the true nature of the conflict and magnitude of the Algerian military’s role in perpetuating the hostilities in the Western Sahara. The fragility of peace in North West Africa is probably the worst it has been since Morocco and Algeria tried to patch-up their differences in 1989. While all indications corroborate that neither Rabat nor Algiers aims for an armed conflict, a future, albeit unlikely, rekindling of hostilities in the Western Sahara will certainly turn into an open war between Morocco and Algeria. Diplomats and military analysts consider the recent events in  the Guerguerat region ,the “no man’s land” of the Western Sahara, as the biggest threat to the UN brokered peace agreement of 1991. As Mauritania keeps it distance from Morocco and ignore the deteriorating security situation on its Northern borders and the Polisario continues to wrestle with a restless civilian population in its refugee camps in Algeria, the fear of an unintended resumption of fighting is present and real.

Headline:    Republican officials take aim at progressive protests

Headline:  Barack Obama’s close confidante Valerie Jarrett has moved into his new DC home, which is now the nerve center for their plan to mastermind the insurgency against President Trump

Earlier this week, Donald Trump rolled out an interesting new conspiracy theory: the progressive protests that have unfolded in the wake of his election, the Republican president said, are his predecessor’s fault. “I think that President Obama is behind it,” Trump told Fox News. On Tuesday, Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders fielded some questions from reporters, one of whom asked if Trump has any “tangible evidence” to back up his conspiracy theory. Sanders said she’d let the president comment “stand for itself.” Pressed further, Sanders added, “Look, I think the bottom line here is that we’ve all condemned the protests. I think that that’s the bigger story here.” It was a curious choice of words. Americans have gathered to express political dissent and White House officials want everyone to know they’ve “condemned the protests”? Why exactly would they do that? Worse, away from the DC Beltway, Republican policymakers aren’t just condemning protests; they’re exploring deliberate steps to try and block them from happening. The New York Times reported today: In a season rife with demonstrations over immigration, pipelines, abortion, women’s rights and more, Republican legislators in at least 16 states have filed bills intended to make protests more orderly or to toughen penalties against ones that go awry. Republicans in two other states, Massachusetts and North Carolina, have said they will file protest-related bills. Those numbers include only bills whose sponsors have specifically linked them to protests, said Jonathan Griffin, a policy analyst who tracks the measures at the National Conference of State Legislatures…. [I]nterviews and news reports suggest that some of the measures are either backed by supporters of President Trump or are responses to demonstrations against him and his policies.

Headline:     Suicide Bombers Destroy Fuel Tankers in Nigeria

Three suicide bombers set ablaze three fuel tankers in the center of Nigeria’s northeastern city of Maiduguri before dawn Friday, officials said, just days before a planned visit by the U.N. Security Council. The attack, outside a gas station opposite the northeastern headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria, killed the three bombers, said Abdulkadir Ibrahim, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency. Officials blamed Boko Haram insurgents who many times have attacked Maiduguri, the birthplace of Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremist group. Ibrahim said fires caused by the explosions were under control. One bomber exploded beside a stationary tanker loaded with fuel, killing the two accomplices and setting ablaze two other tankers, Ibrahim said. “We are lucky. Today could have been another sad day for us in Maiduguri,” police commissioner Damian Chukwu told reporters at the scene. Chukwu said he and others assumed the attackers’ intended destination was just down the road — a depot storing fuel that has been targeted many times in the past. The attack comes just days before the U.N. Security Council is expected in Maiduguri as part of a four-nation tour of countries in the Lake Chad Basin devastated by the seven-year Boko Haram uprising that has killed more than 20,000.

Headline:      EU parliament calls to end visa-free travel for US citizens

Headline:       The pope will meet all EU leaders ahead of Rome summit

In what has been called a “visa war,” the European Union’s parliament on Thursday called on the bloc to force American tourists visiting Europe to first obtain visas because the U.S. excludes five EU countries from its no-visa policy. The Wall Street Journal reported that the request is unlikely to change policy, but reflects “hostility among some European politicians to the Trump administration.” The report said Parliament’s vote came six weeks into Trump’s presidency and after the legislature publically slammed Trump’s executive order banning travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries. U.S. citizens can travel to all EU countries without visas but the U.S. hasn’t granted visa-free travel to citizens of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania. The legislature urged the European Commission to act within two months. The Commission was legally bound to propose by last April that visas be reintroduced for U.S. citizens for 12 months but the 28-nation bloc’s member countries preferred to take no action.

Headline:      Protests mount in China against South Korea’s missile system

Headline:  South Korea Impeachment Intensifies Divide Over THAAD

Headline:  South Korean Stocks Fall on Fears of Chinese Tourism Ban

Beijing’s escalating condemnation of South Korea over a U.S. anti-missile system has triggered protests against a popular retail giant and a reported ban on Chinese tour groups visiting the country, apparent signs that Beijing plans to make Seoul pay an economic price over a move that China says threatens its security. Protests have sprung up in the last few days against Lotte Mart, a South Korean hypermarket chain that sells food, clothing, toys and electronics. Its parent company, Lotte Group, agreed Monday to provide a golf course to the government to site the system. The protests outside Lotte stores and boycotts of its products follow weeks of condemnation of the South Korean government and warnings against Lotte’s move by government officials and state media. Seoul and Washington say the system is needed to defend against North Korea’s missile threat and is not targeted at any other regional states. China says the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, threatens its security because its radars are capable of peering deep into the country’s north and parts of Russia, allowing Washington and Seoul to monitor flights and missile launches. Asked about the protests, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Friday: “There are absolutely no anti-THAAD campaigns in China, still less violent campaigns.” He added that Beijing hoped Seoul “can heed the voice of the people and take effective measures to avoid further damage to the China-South Korea relationship.”

Headline:  Insurgents continue attacks in southern Thailand

Two paramilitary volunteers were wounded Friday by gunmen in southern Thailand, as continuing violence in the region threatens to undermine what the Thai government says is the possibility of a small breakthrough in efforts to bring peace to the region. The two volunteers in Narathiwat province were shot as they parked their motorcycles by the roadside, said police Capt. Wongduen Kamsri. The shooting came a day came after attacks elsewhere in the province killed three soldiers and five civilians, including an 8-year-old boy. The soldiers were shot in the evening at a busy market, while the boy, his parents and an aunt were killed as they were driving to school. About 7,000 people have been killed since a Muslim separatist insurgency flared in 2004 in Buddhist-dominated Thailand’s three Muslim-majority provinces in its far south.

Headline:       Military Draft Enacted Amid Russian Aggression, Security Fears

Sweden’s defense minister announced Thursday the country would reintroduce mandatory military service next year as regional security fears were compounded by a shortage of soldiers. The northern European nation has remained largely neutral throughout the last two centuries of international affairs, but Russia’s 2014 annexation of the former Ukrainian territory of Crimea and substantial, parallel military escalations between Moscow and NATO have sparked serious concerns over Sweden’s defense capabilities should conflict break out. The country’s Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist told local media that recent developments in Europe’s geopolitical climate meant Stockholm could no longer rely on volunteers to man its armed forces. Sweden, which had male-only conscription until 2010, was set to begin recruiting 4,000 men and women out of about 13,000 candidates born in 1999 and 2000 as of the beginning of next year. The goal was to develop “full and practiced war units” capable of bolstering the existing volunteer system via the program that would cost an estimated $66 million. The number of compulsory troops would increase should the security situation continue to deteriorate in the region, according to Swedish broadcaster STV News. “The government wants a more stable staff supply system and to boost its military capability because the security situation has changed,” Hultqvist told Sweden’s TT news agency Thursday. A defense ministry spokesperson added that “Russian military activity is one of the reasons,” according to BBC News.

Headline:  The “Sinister” Side Of Central Bank-Issued Digital Currency

Some things are moving faster than others. Representatives of more than 90 central banks met in June 2016 at an event organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The three-day Conference on ‘Policy Challenges for the Financial Sector’ included discussion on distributed ledger technologies in banking. This month the Bank of International Settlements observed that distributed ledger technology in banking has a long way to go. Others believe that they shouldn’t bother.  Meanwhile, there is rapid movement taking place on another front. It’s coming and it’s coming fast. Central banks around the world are either exploring or taking the first steps towards establishing digital versions of national (or “fiat”) currencies. Central bank-issued digital currency is under consideration in Canada, China, Sweden and the United Kindgom. India withdrew 86 per cent of all cash as legal tender in November 2016. 1.27 billion people were given four hours notice. Last month, we saw early signs from the European Central Bank that it is considering the feasibility of “digital-based money.” Commercial banks are taking the first steps to issue their own crypto-currencies, such as Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. International organisations lead the chorus of support for related initiatives toward the digitization of cash. Alongside the International Monetary Fund and World Bank is the Alliance for Financial Inclusion, while the United Nations Capital Development Fund hosts the Better Than Cash Alliance. Organizations dedicated to advancing the technology and its adoption are emerging. They include E-Currency, the sole purpose of which is to promote “central bank-governed digital fiat currency.”

Headline:      These Economies Are Getting More Miserable This Year

If 2016 was the year of political shocks, this year could be when we find how they’ll impact the global economy. Bloomberg’s Misery Index, which combines countries’ 2017 inflation and unemployment outlooks, aims to show us just that. For the third year in a row, Venezuela’s economic and political problems make it the most miserable in the ranking. The least miserable country is once again Thailand — in large part due to its unique way of calculating employment — and the rest of the ladder features noteworthy moves by the U.K., Poland and Mexico, to name a few.

Headline:       Surge in human cases of deadly bird flu is prompting alarm

A surge in human infections of a deadly bird flu in China is prompting increasing concern among health officials around the world. While the human risk of these outbreaks is low at the moment, experts are calling for constant monitoring because of the large increase in cases this season, and because there are worrisome changes in the virus. U.S. officials say of all emerging influenza viruses, this particular virus poses the greatest risk of a pandemic threat if it evolves to spread readily from human to human, according to a report released Friday. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials are developing a vaccine that would target a newly evolving version of the virus. China is experiencing its largest outbreak of the H7N9 bird flu strain, with at least 460 infections reported since October. About a third of people diagnosed with H7N9 have died of their infections, according to the World Health Organization. Human infections with this type of bird flu were first reported in China in March 2013, and since then, there have been yearly epidemics of human infections. But this winter, the number of cases is greater than any of the previous four seasons. This year’s infections account for more than a third of the 1,258 H7N9 cases that have been reported since 2013. Most human infections involve exposure to live poultry or contaminated environments, especially markets where live birds have been sold. During the previous four waves of H7N9, 88 percent of patients developed pneumonia, 68 percent were admitted to an intensive care unit and 41 percent died, according to a report from the CDC.

Headline:      Jiminy Cricket! Disney Goes Gay

The folks who gave us Mickey Mouse and Goofy have decided it’s time for your children to enjoy same-sex romance while they slurp down their Fruit Loops. Disney just broadcast their very first gay cartoon kiss. The smooch happened during the second season of “Star vs The Forces of Evil,” a cartoon broadcast on Disney XD. An audience scene shows two guys kissing and a later scene show two ladies sharing an intimate moment. Disney is earning accolades for diversity and inclusivity among the LGBTQIA crowd. There’s also word the upcoming live-action version of Beauty and the Beast will include a gay storyline – between LeFou and Gaston. And what better place to discuss human sexuality with your four-year-old than a wholesome Disney movie? It’s unfortunate – that we live in a society where kids can no longer be kids – but that’s the world in which we live. But these days everything is about the LGBTQIA agenda. And when it comes to the entertainment industry, nothing is sacred in its quest to indoctrinate American children. Not even Disney. So, don’t be too surprised if the next Disney animated classic documents Tinker Bell’s torrid lesbian affair with Snow White while a gender questioning Peter Pan crushes on Pinocchio who just got out of a long-term relationship with one of the seven gender-fluid dwarfs. Headline:   27 days after Amona, police evacuate 9 Ofra homes

Headline: Amona HQ announces hunger strike

Hundreds of activists from Ofra, the broader Judea and Samaria region and from around Israel confronted police personnel and in some cases actively fought with them in protest at the evacuation and pending destruction of nine houses in the settlement. Emotions among the home owners and protesters were high especially coming so swiftly on the heels of the evacuation and destruction of the Amona outpost earlier this month. Some of the former residents of Amona went to Ofra to protest the destruction of the houses there. At least eight policemen were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital for treatment, while at least two protesters were arrested for attacking police personnel. After eight of the homes were evacuated by the early afternoon, several hundred protesters, some who had been extracted by police from other houses, packed themselves into every room of the final house, filling up the staircase, the balconies and taking up position on the roof as well. During the evacuation of this house, 18 protesters were injured, most of whom were minors, a spokesperson for the Binyamin municipal region said, and were treated at a medical site in Ofra. Two others were sent to hospital for treatment, one, a 14-year old, with injuries to his hand. Although the evacuation was mostly non-violent, large numbers of the protesters refused to leave of their own volition and had to be forcibly removed, in many cases requiring four policemen or women to take out each activist.

Headline:   Hezbollah Threatens Israel With Sign on Lebanese Border

A large sign was recently placed on the Israel-Lebanon border that threatened retaliation against Israel for killing Hezbollah terrorists, the Israeli news website NRG reported Monday. The sign featured the words “the account is not settled” alongside three images of Hezbollah commanders, including Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in 2008 by a bomb believed to have been planted by Israel. The sign also displayed a map of routes that the Iran-backed terror group could take to infiltrate villages in northern Israel. Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed two years ago that the next time Hezbollah attacked Israel, it would “enter into Galilee and…go even beyond the Galilee.” Lebanese media reported earlier this month that Hezbollah had dug tunnels and acquired “game-changing” weapons on Israel’s northern border. The Israel Defense Forces has adapted its strategy to counter Hezbollah efforts to infiltrate Israel by land or by sea, and has built physical obstacles to make it harder for Hezbollah to enter the country. Israeli security forces broke up a terror plot in the Golan Heights in October after a farmer stumbled over a cache of explosives.

Headline:   Russia, China veto UN resolution on Syria sanctions

Headline: US to persuade EU partners to sanction Syria over alleged chemical attacks

Russia and China on Tuesday vetoed a UN resolution backed by Western powers that would have imposed sanctions on Syria over chemical weapons use. The measure drafted by Britain, France and the United States won nine votes in favour at the Security Council while three countries opposed it — China, Russia and Bolivia. Kazakhstan, Ethiopia and Egypt abstained. UN resolutions require nine positive votes and no veto to be adopted. It was the seventh time that Russia, Syria’s top military ally, has used its veto power to shield the Damascus regime. China, also one of the five veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council, has joined Russia in vetoing six resolutions on Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned that imposing sanctions on Syria during ongoing peace talks in Geneva was “completely inappropriate” and would undermine the effort to end Syria’s nearly six-year war. “This resolution is very appropriate,” US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council after the measure was defeated in the vote. “It is a sad day on the Security Council when members start making excuses for other member states killing their own people.” “The world is definitely a more dangerous place,” she said. The resolution would have put 11 Syrians, mainly military commanders, and 10 entities linked to chemical attacks in 2014 and 2015 on a UN sanctions blacklist.

Headline: The Arab Summit may bury hatchet with Assad

Secret contacts currently underway ahead of the Arab League summit later this month may bring about a sea change in the Arab world’s relationship with Syrian President Bashar Assad, debkafile’s sources report. On Saturday, Feb. 25, Egypt’s parliamentary committee for Arab affairs called for the return of Syria to the Arab League. This step symbolized an initiative launched by a number of leaders to invite Syrian President Bashar Assad to the March 29 Arab Summit in Amman – five years after Syria was expelled from the 22-member Arab League over the savage civil war then at its height. Three leaders are spearheading the moves for Assad’s reacceptance by the Arab community, whether together or separately: Russian President Vladimir Putin, Egyptian President Abdel-Fatteh El-Sissi and Jordanian King Abdullah. All three hope to see a historic handshake and greetings between Assad and Saudi King Salman. This would signify the reconciliation between Saudi Arabia which backed the Syrian rebels, and the Assad regime. But for Assad, it would mark collective Arab recognition of his personal victory, when few expected him to come out alive from the nearly seven sevens of cruel warfare, first sparked by the Arab Spring of December 2010. Putin’s interest in this epic event is self-evident. When he launched a major Russian intervention in the Syrian war in September 2015, President Barack Obama predicted that the Russian army would sink in the Syrian quagmire. The Russian leader proved him wrong, and his reputation in the Arab world would soar if he coujld persuade King Salman to accept Assad’s return to the Arab summit.

Headline:       Damascus opens up trade route with Kurds in northern Syria

Following a huge advance in eastern Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has officially linked up with the ‘Syrian Democratic Forces’ (SDF) and a region dubbed Rojava by Kurdish politicians vying for an independent Kurdistan in northern Syria. Effectively, Kurdish residents are able to reach the isolated Sheikh Maqsoud district in Aleppo city while family members of SAA troops stationed around Hasakah and Qamishli can visit their relatives for the first time since 2012. With trade flowing between Kurdish-held and Syrian-held areas of the country for the first time ever, the SAA and SDF are also supporting each other militarily on the battlefield in eastern Aleppo due to the aforementioned parties sharing common foes; namely, the Turkish Armed Forces and ISIS. Next up, the SDF and SAA will try to expand their narrow trade route to secure safe passage of goods and supply trucks. Should government forces expel Turkish troops from Al-Bab, this would secure the M4-Highway between Manbij and Aleppo for future trade. Nevertheless, the Syrian Government remains opposed to the concept of Rojava and an independent Kurdish state in northern Syria.

Headline: US State Senator: Turkey wants to annex northern Syria

The Turkish army and allied Syrian rebels attacked villages held by U.S.-allied militias near the city of Manbij in northern Syria on Wednesday, a spokesman for the militias said, an escalation of Turkey’s military campaign in the border area. There was no immediate comment from Turkey, which is waging its “Euphrates Shield” campaign with Syrian rebels to drive both Islamic State and Kurdish militias away from the frontier. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said this week Manbij was the next target of the campaign following the capture of al-Bab from Islamic State last week. The new attack focused on a string of villages controlled by the Manbij Military Council, part of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance, the spokesman for the Manbij Military Council told Reuters. “There is a very big attack by the Euphrates Shield and Turkish army on the villages and areas of the Manbij Military Council,” Sharfan Darwish said. He named eight villages some 27 km (17 miles) west of Manbij. “There are fierce clashes … and heavy artillery bombardment.” The fighting was the fiercest between the two sides since August last year, when Turkey and the rebels fought SDF-allied groups in an advance towards Manbij from the Turkish border. The area has been mostly calm since a ceasefire that month which the United States helped to broker. An upsurge in fighting between sides supported by two powerful NATO members will pose even more of a challenge for U.S. strategy in the battle against Islamic State, and further complicate northern Syria’s already crowded battlefield.

Headline:   Syrian Army retakes Palmyra citadel from ISIS – sources to RT (Homs Province)

Syrian government forces and their allies have liberated the Palmyra citadel located on a hill overlooking the town from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants, sources tell RT. “Pro-government forces are now in control of several strategic mountains that are overlooking the ancient city of Palmyra. They also have under their control the famous citadel,” RT’s Lizzie Phelan reports, citing sources that are in direct contact with the army command center on the Palmyra front. The Syrian Army does not have any forces stationed in the citadel, as it is filled with improvised explosive devices, but it is under their control, she added. The Syrian Army took control over “the heights surrounding the historic citadel of Palmyra and as well as the SyriaTel hill after Islamic State militants abruptly left the area,” a field commander told RIA Novosti. As a result, Palmyra is now “at a stone throw” from the Syrian Army, which is rapidly advancing towards the city, the commander added. The army is now storming a hotel district in the southwestern part of Palmyra, RIA Novosti reports, citing a source.

The UN has said that over 8,000 people have fled the intense clashes between ISIS and Iraqi forces in West Mosul. The UN’s humanitarian aid agency said on Tuesday that it will set up displacement camps for the people escaping the fighting. “So far today (Tuesday), we have around 300 displaced people — men and women and children,” said Brigadier General Salman Hashem of the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service. “There are more coming. They’re stopped at a checkpoint when they arrive and separated. The men are searched and then checked against a database,” he added.

Turkey

Headline:       Iran, Turkey presidents meet to defuse tensions

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan agreed on Wednesday to improve ties, including in the fight against terrorism, Iran’s state news agency IRNA said, following some angry exchanges between the regional rivals. Tehran and Ankara support opposite sides in the conflict in Syria. Largely Shi’ite Muslim Iran backs the government of President Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey, which is majority Sunni, has backed elements of the Syrian opposition. Last month Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu both accused Iran of trying to destabilize Syria and Iraq and of sectarianism, prompting Tehran to summon Ankara’s ambassador. In an apparent response to Ankara’s accusations, Rouhani was quoted by IRNA as saying on Wednesday: “Iran supports the territorial integrity of regional countries … especially Iraq and Syria.” “Resolving political differences (between Iran and Turkey) can lead to regional stability,” Rouhani was quoted as saying at his meeting with Erdogan, on the sidelines of an economic cooperation summit in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. Regional rivalry between Iran and Turkey is nothing new, but political analysts have linked Ankara’s tougher rhetoric to U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to the Middle East.

Headline: Another northern Afghan district falls to the Taliban

Twelve policemen have been killed in an “insider attack” in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, officials say. A police source told the BBC that an infiltrator from the Taliban had allowed militants into the outpost in the regional capital, Lashkar Gah. The infiltrator fled with the Taliban. Other reports said the infiltrator killed the policemen himself. A spokesperson for the provincial governor confirmed the attack, but did not provide details. Local television news reported that the Taliban seized weapons and ammunition from the scene, and that a local hospital had confirmed receipt of at least 11 bodies. But a Helmand police official made no mention of a Taliban infiltrator in his comments on the attack. “The Taliban attacked a guard with silenced guns and then entered the check post,” Helmand deputy police chief Haji Gulai told Reuters news agency. “They attacked other policemen with hand grenades and killed all of them. They later took their weapons and ammunition and escaped.”

A pair of suicide bombings, both claimed by the Taliban, struck the Afghan capital, Kabul, on Wednesday, an Afghan official said. Najib Danish, deputy spokesman for the Interior Ministry, said that one bomber targeted the gates of a police station in western Kabul as part of a coordinated attack and that a gunbattle between police and an unknown number of armed attackers was ongoing. Mohibullah Zeer, a Public Health Ministry official, said that one person was killed and at least 37 wounded. Meanwhile a second suicide bomber on foot carried out another attack in eastern Kabul, targeting an office belonging to the national intelligence service. Danish said two people were wounded in that attack. Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for both attacks.

Headline:     Kremlin Condemns NATO’s ‘Barbaric’ Libya Intervention Ahead of PM Visit

The Kremlin has revived its criticism of the U.S.-led intervention in Libya, days ahead of a possible visit by the war-torn north African country’s prime minister, state news agency Itar-Tass reports. The NATO operation in 2011 toppled Libyan authoritarian leader Muammar al-Qaddafi quickly but the limited planning for rebuilding the country politically resulted in a collapse into civil war. Islamist extremist groups have risen to prominence in the country and ex-U.S. President Barack Obama pointed to the lack of planning as his worst mistake in his last year in office. Russia was opposed to the move though did not block the resolution for an intervention in the United Nations Security Council. Regardless, Libya has become the Kremlin’s standard example of Western inadequacy in the Middle East. Monday Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman gave yet another clue that Moscow intends to play a role in restoring a strong regime in the country.

Headline:      Tunisia troops take fight to jihadists

Soldiers shot dead two suspected jihadists in the mountainous Kasserine region of central Tunisia, the defence ministry said on Wednesday. It said more might have been killed on Tuesday evening but the operation on Mount Sammama was still continuing so it was a preliminary toll. Tunisian media cited military sources as saying that as many as seven suspected jihadists might have been killed. A hospital source in Kasserine said one soldier had suffered a bullet wound. Mount Sammama is adjacent to Mount Chaambi, considered to be the main rear base of the jihadists near the border with Algeria. Soldiers shot dead two suspected jihadists in the same area on February 17. Since its 2011 revolution, Tunisia has experienced an increase in jihadist attacks that have cost the lives of dozens of members of the security forces and also 59 foreign tourists.

Headline:      Armenia-backed separatists say one soldier killed in clashes with Azeri forces

Armenian-backed separatists said on Wednesday one of their soldiers was killed in clashes with Azeri forces along the boundary with the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region. Clashes over control of the region, which lies inside Azerbaijan but is controlled by ethnic Armenians, have stoked fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the South Caucasus, which is crisscrossed by oil and gas pipelines. Nagorno-Karabakh’s self-declared defence ministry said Azeri forces had been violating ceasefire agreements since the morning. The Azeri defence ministry said that their forces detected and destroyed some Armenian combat vehicles during a manoeuvre. “The Armenian armed forces have been suffering losses, mainly mercenaries of Armenian origin,” the Azeri defence ministry said in a statement. Five Azeri soldiers were killed in clashes with Armenian-backed separatists last week and both sides have been accusing each other of an attempted incursion.

Headline:    Islam Set To Overtake Christianity As Most Popular Religion

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and will overtake Christianity as the most popular before the end of this century, according to an analysis of religious surveys published Tuesday by the Pew Research Center. With 1.6 billion, Muslims made up 23 percent of the world’s population, according to a 2010 Pew estimate. That figure was still some way short of the 2.2 billion Christians which comprised 31 percent of the population. However, by 2050 there could be near parity between the numbers of adherents of the two religions for the first time in history. The reasons for this rapid growth are thought to be the greater number of children Muslims have compared to other religious groups and the comparatively young age of Muslims. The largest percentage of Muslims are currently in the Asia-Pacific region, rather than the Middle East and North Africa. Indonesia currently has the largest number of Muslims of any country, but that title could be taken by India by 2050. By that point, it is also projected that Muslims will also make up 10 percent of Europe’s population.

Headline: Bloody Islamic State video puts China in cross-hairs

Islamic State militants from China’s Uighur ethnic minority have vowed to return home and “shed blood like rivers”, according to a jihadist-tracking firm, in what experts said marked the first IS threat against Chinese targets. The threat came in a half-hour video released Monday by a division of the Islamic State in western Iraq and featuring militants from China’s Uighur ethnic group, said the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which analysed the footage. China has for years blamed exiled Uighur “separatists” for a series of violent attacks in its western Xinjiang region — the Uighur homeland — and warned of the potential for militants to link up with global jihadist groups. In the video, a Uighur fighter issued the threat against China just before executing an alleged informant. “Oh, you Chinese who do not understand what people say! We are the soldiers of the Caliphate, and we will come to you to clarify to you with the tongues of our weapons, to shed blood like rivers and avenging the oppressed,” according to SITE’s translation. A traditionally Muslim group, many Uighurs complain of cultural and religious repression and discrimination by China. It appears to be the Islamic State’s “first direct threat” against China, Dr. Michael Clarke, an expert on Xinjiang at the National Security College of Australian National University, told AFP.

Headline:           PAC-3 missiles deployed on Taiwan’s east coast ‘in response to Chinese military strategy’

One of the world’s most powerful air defense missile systems, the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3), has been stationed on Taiwan’s east coast, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said in a report, citing China’s “changing military strategy.” The ministry confirmed that (PAC-3) missile systems were moved to the area of Hualien and Taitung to ensure that Taiwan can defend itself in the event of an attack, Taiwan’s national news agency, CNA, reported. It is the first time Taiwan’s military has acknowledged stationing the missiles in the scantly populated Hualien and Taitung areas, according to Taiwan News. Until now, Patriot PAC-3 missile defense systems were believed to have been located close to the populous cities of Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung, the newspaper said. The MND said in a report that Taiwan’s military is determined to boost its combat readiness through innovations in military drills and training, deployment of military forces, and enhanced exchanges between various branches of the armed forces, in light of increased military spending by China, CNA reported. Taiwan’s armed forces will be conducting routine patrols, air force training sessions, and joint air-naval exercises to enhance their ability to protect the fishing rights and safety of Taiwanese fishermen in the South China Sea, Taiwan’s national news agency said, citing the ministry’s report.

Headline:  NY Teamsters Pension Becomes First To Run Out Of Money As Expert Warns “Pension Tsunami” Is Coming

The New York Teamsters Road Carriers Local 707 Pension Fund has won the unfortunate award for “First Pension to Officially Run Out of Money.”  According to the New York Daily News, and a host of angry former truck drivers who’ve had their pension benefits slashed, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC) has officially been forced to step in and take over payments to retirees of the Local 707, albeit at a much lower rate. Teamsters Local 707’s pension fund is the first to officially bottom out financially — which happened this month. “I had a union job for 30 years,” Chmil said. “We had collectively bargained contracts that promised us a pension. I paid into it with every paycheck. Everyone told us, ‘Don’t worry, you have a union job, your pension is guaranteed.’ Well, so much for that.” “It’s a nightmare, it has just devastated all of our lives. I’ve gone from having $48,000 a year to less than half that,” said Chmil, one of five Local 707 retirees who agreed to share their stories with the Daily News last week. “I don’t want other people to have to go through this. We need everyone to wake up and do something; that’s why we’re talking,” said Ray Narvaez. Of course, the Teamsters 707 and other Teamster pension boards attempted to submit plans that would have cut benefits in order to prolong payments to retirees but those plans were universally rejected by the Obama administration…better that the pensions just run out of cash completely.  Per Pensions & Investments: The Obama administration is in denial about the necessity of cutting pension benefits under the Multiemployer Pension Reform Act of 2014 to try to put distressed multiemployer plans on sounder financial footings and make them more sustainable. It must face reality and order the Treasury Department to stop blocking action. So far the department, required under the act to approve proposed reductions, has rejected proposals by the Teamsters Central States, Southeast & Southwest Areas Pension Plan and the Road Carriers Local 707 Pension Fund. Ten plans total have applied for cuts, including the New York State Teamsters Conference Pension and Retirement Fund, Syracuse, whose Aug. 31 application is too new to be listed on the Treasury’s website. The Road Carriers 707 application stated that the plan projects it will become insolvent in February — only about five months away — absent suspension of benefits. As desperate as the plan’s financial situation appears to be, the Treasury denied the application.

Headline: More Austerity Looms as Greece, Lenders Resume Bailout Talks

Greece and its lenders resumed a long-stalled review of its bailout Tuesday, with the government in Athens braced to commit to yet more austerity in exchange for the funds the country needs to remain solvent. The review has dragged on for months, partly because of a rift between the European Union and the International Monetary Fund over Greece’s fiscal goals and prospects next year — when the current rescue program expires — and beyond. To help break the impasse, the leftist-led government last week agreed to pre-legislate economic reforms, including cuts in income tax breaks and pensions, to come into effect from the start of 2019, the year the next parliamentary elections are due. The IMF, still undecided on whether to participate in what is Greece’s third rescue package, says Athens cannot meet its targets unless it is granted further debt relief and adopts extra belt-tightening measures. Greece’s European lenders, notably Germany, oppose debt relief.

Headline: Venezuela is down to its last $10 billion

Venezuela only has $10.5 billion in foreign reserves left, according to its most recent central bank data. For rest of the year, Venezuela owes roughly $7.2 billion in outstanding debt payments. In 2011, Venezuela had roughly $30 billion in reserves. In 2015, it had $20 billion. The trend can’t persist much longer, but it’s hard to know exactly when Venezuela will run completely out of cash. “The question is: Where is the floor?” says Siobhan Morden, head of Latin America fixed income strategy at Nomura Holdings. “If oil prices stagnate and foreign reserves reach zero, then the clock is going to start on a default.” According to the country’s recently released 2016 financial report, about $7.7 billion of its remaining $10.5 billion of reserves is in gold. To make debt payments in the past year, Venezuela shipped gold to Switzerland. The thinning reserves paint a scary financial picture as the country faces a humanitarian crisis sparked by an economic meltdown. Venezuelans are suffering massive food and medical shortages, as well as skyrocketing grocery prices.

Headline:     Somalia President Declares Drought a National Disaster

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has declared a state of disaster as the Horn of Africa nation struggles with a severe drought and food crisis. According to the United Nations, the crisis in Somalia threatens 6.2 million people, more than half the population. Conditions are driest in the north. Crop production and livestock numbers have fallen sharply after back-to-back poor rainy seasons last year. Last week, U.N. aid agencies warned there is only a two-month window to avert a catastrophe in Somalia. The World Health Organization says the current drought conditions are also causing the spread of disease. It says that since early January, more than 6,000 cases of cholera have been reported, as well as more than 2,500 cases of suspected measles. The United Nations has launched $825 million appeal for Somalia to cover the first half of 2017.

Headline:   Nicaragua woman burnt on a fire in exorcism ritual

Headline: Face-biter said he fled demon-like figure before killings

A young woman in an isolated part of Nicaragua has died a week after being tied up and allegedly thrown on a fire in an exorcism ritual. Family members told local media that Vilma Trujillo had been attacked by four people led by a man who said he was an evangelical pastor. Juan Rocha denied burning Mrs Trujillo, saying evil spirits had suspended her above the fire and then dropped her. Relatives found Mrs Trujillo, 25, hours later with severe burns. The police have arrested Mr Rocha and a number of other people allegedly involved in the attack. The victim’s husband, Reynaldo Peralta Rodriguez, said the mother-of-two was taken inside a church last week when members thought she was possessed after allegedly trying to attack people with a machete, the Associated Press reports. “It’s unforgiveable what they did to us,” he was quoted as saying. “They killed my wife, the mother of my two little ones. Now what am I going to tell them?” Pablo Cuevas, a spokesman for Nicaragua’s Human Rights Commission, called on the government for firmer control over religious sects in the country. “It is incredible that these things can happen today, there has to be a review by the authorities into all the different denominations and religions,” he said. “We can’t have things like this happening.”

Headline:     VOLCANO WARNING Panic in Sicily as Mount Etna BLOWS in huge eruption on Italy holiday isle

Italy’s Mount Etna has started spewing lava in what is its second eruption of the year. Giant fountains of lava could be seen sprouting from the volcano, located on the isle of Sicily, as far away as Catania, around 30 kilometres away, and the resort town of Taormina. The Meteorological Observatory in Nunziata said: “You can clearly see the lava fountains, although currently modest, as it escapes from the crater in the southeast.” An orange air alert has been issued, meaning that airspace will remain open but authorities will continue to monitor the situation. While civil protection authorities has declared a yellow alert level and, as prescribed by the municipal emergency plan, an ordinance was issued to restrict access to the summit of Etna. Authorities added that there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, and expect it to remain that way with the eruption posing little threat to nearby settlements. The large volcano began erupting on February 27, and the eruptions are expected to continue for several days.

Headline:     Storm that spawned 24 tornado reports barrels east; 3 dead

A powerful and wide-reaching line of severe storms barreled east on Wednesday threatening new damage, after spinning off as many as 24 tornadoes across the central U.S., killing at least three people. Tornado reports emerged up and down the state of Illinois on Tuesday. Compact but strong storms known as supercells triggered widespread damage from Arkansas to Ohio, as wind-whipped wildfires destroyed homes in Texas. Parts of the eastern and southeastern U.S. could be in the crosshairs next. Tornado watches were in effect for parts of Kentucky and Tennessee through Wednesday morning. In Ottawa, Illinois, state Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson said a tornado victim was killed by an uprooted tree. In nearby Naplate, storms ripped homes into pieces.
