Israel’s Netanyahu, Gantz Say Near Unity Deal to End Political Deadlock

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and political rival Benny Gantz were nearing a deal on Tuesday to form a national emergency government to battle the coronavirus crisis and end the country’s unprecedented political deadlock. Gantz’s 28-day mandate to put together a ruling coalition after last month’s inconclusive election was due to expire at midnight, but President Reuven Rivlin, who is overseeing the coalition talks, extended it for two days. Rivlin did so, his office said, “on the understanding that they are very close to reaching an agreement.” Gantz and Netanyahu met overnight in an effort to settle their differences, after which the sides said they had made “significant progress.” A second meeting on Tuesday ended with a joint statement saying the negotiating teams would resume talks on Wednesday evening, hours before the new deadline.

Israel targets Hezbollah vehicle near Syria-Lebanon border

An Israeli drone targeted a car carrying forces from Iran-backed Hezbollah in Syria near the Lebanese border, a commander in the pro-Damascus regional alliance and a security source said. Sky News Arabia reported the targeted vehicle was carrying a commander belonging to the Lebanese terror group. Pictures from the scene of the attack showed the remains of the burned down vehicle covered by a doormat. This method of covering tacks is widely used by Hezbollah fighters in order to avoid being detected by spy drones. Over the recent days, Israel has increased its presence in the Lebanese and Syrian airspace. Hezbollah has not commented on the incident. In the meantime, on Tuesday evening an Iranian military plane was detected flying over Iraq on its way to Tehran. The plane’s altitude and trajectory would indicate it was coming back from Damascus.

Gun battle erupts in Cairo between security forces, fighters

A gun battle has erupted in Egypt’s capital, Cairo, between security forces and members of a “terrorist group”, according to state television. The exchange of gunfire on Tuesday took place in the al-Amiriyah district. A security source told AFP news agency that a policeman succumbed to his wounds following the shoot-out. Another officer was also hospitalised. “Initial investigations show that the suspects were planning to carry out terrorist acts,” a separate security source was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. The source added that explosives and weapons were found with the suspects.

  Coronavirus stay-at-home orders stir protests nationwide amid fears of economic collapse

At least 15,000 cars and trucks are expected to descend on Michigan’s state capital on Wednesday to protest what they’re calling Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s tyrannical new guidelines to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus in the state. “Quarantine is when you restrict movement of sick people. Tyranny is when you restrict the movement of healthy people,” Meshawn Maddock, an organizer of the protest with the Michigan Conservative Coalition, told Fox News. “Every person has learned a harsh lesson about social distancing. We don’t need a nanny state to tell people how to be careful.” The protest – called “Operation Gridlock” – would be just one of a number of demonstrations of civil disobedience around the country by Americans upset with their state’s stay-at-home orders amid the pandemic. While the contagion has infected over 568,000 Americans and killed over 23,000, according to the latest estimates, protestors from North Carolina to Wyoming said they’ve been just as concerned with the economic and financial impact the coronavirus has inflicted on the country – echoing President Trump’s complaint that “the cure be worse than the problem.” Alex Berenson, a former New York Times reporter who has been sounding the alarm about what he believes are flawed models dictating the aggressive strategy, drew attention to the protests in North Carolina, as well as a social media uproar in Michigan.

North Korea fires ‘barrage’ of missiles, South Korea says

North Korea has carried out a several different missile tests Tuesday, according to the  South Korean military.

South Korean military officials assessed North Korea fired missiles from both the ground and from airborne fighter jets, Fox News reported. The launches likely come as a show of force on the eve of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung’s 108th birthday, as well as a distraction ahead of South Korea’s upcoming parliamentary elections. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff assessed the first string of missile launches were fired off by North Korean troops in Munchonto and were presumed to be cruise missiles. The missiles reportedly splashed down 93 miles off the Korean coast. Later missile tests were carried out by North Korean fighter jets. An unknown number of suspected air-to-surface missiles were launched into the same waters off the Korean coast.

U.S. Military Planes Fly near Taiwan After China Threatens ‘Military Struggle’

Two United States military aircraft reportedly flew close to Taipei’s southern airspace on Monday, the Taipei Times said. The newspaper, citing flight charts posted on Twitter, identified a U.S. RC-135W Rivet Joint and a Lockheed P-3 Orion in the airspace north of the South China Sea. Aircraft Spots, a military air movement tracker, posted the images. The two planes flew at different intervals, with the RC-135W reconnaissance plane spotted first over the Bashi Channel, southwest of Taiwan, according to the flight charts. The Bashi Channel connects the South China Sea with the western Pacific Ocean and runs between Taiwan and the Philippines. China claims nearly the entire South China Sea despite an international court ruling in 2016 that its claims are entirely illegal. Taiwan’s Ministry of National Defense (MND) did not directly confirm the aircraft sightings. However, MND spokesman Major General Shih Shun-wen said Taiwan’s military is closely monitoring the nation’s surrounding waters and airspace. The U.S. Air Force presence near Taiwan’s airspace on Monday comes as a direct response to China staging military drills near Taiwan over the weekend.

 Oil market falls too big to offset with output cuts, IEA warns

The International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday forecast a 29 million barrel per day (bpd) dive in April oil demand to levels not seen in 25 years and warned no output cut by producers could fully offset the near-term falls facing the market. Benchmark Brent crude futures LCOc1 fell following the IEA’s monthly report, trading down more than 4% or $1.30 to $28.30 per barrel at 1027 GMT. The IEA forecast a 9.3 million bpd drop in demand for 2020 despite what it called a “solid start” by producers following a record deal to curb supply in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “By lowering the peak of the supply overhang and flattening the curve of the build-up in stocks, they help a complex system absorb the worst of this crisis,” the Paris-based IEA said in its monthly report.

 Doing “whatever it takes” to save the global economy from the coronavirus pandemic is going to cost a lot of money. The U.S. government alone is spending a few trillion dollars, and the Federal Reserve is creating another few trillion dollars to keep the financial system from collapsing. A custom Bloomberg index measuring M2 figures for 12 major economies including the U.S., China, euro zone and Japan shows their aggregate money supply had already more than doubled to $80 trillion from before the 2008-2009 financial crisis. These numbers are so large that they no longer have any meaning; they are simply abstractions. The dollar has no real intrinsic value, backed only by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. Under a fiat currency system, the government says that a dollar is a dollar. Its value relative to things such as other currencies and gold is determined on global markets. Gold is considered to be an objective store of value, and the metal’s rise in dollar terms can be expressed another way, which is that the dollar fell in gold terms. That implies the market has rendered a decision on the value, or rather, the purchasing power of the dollar.

   China’s central bank digital currency wallet is revealed

Screenshots of an internal mobile application developed by the ABC, initially seen circulating on WeChat on Tuesday and later verified by CoinDesk, shows the banking giant has already developed a front-end interface of how users could potentially interact with China’s CBDC – also known as DC/EP. The move hints at the acceleration of the development and deployment work of rolling out the DC/EP. CoinDesk exclusively reported last year that the People’s Bank of China had been developing the system with the involvement of the country’s four big state-owned banks as well as payments giants Ant Financial and Tencent. The testing application, which is also available for download on iOS and Android mobile devices via a site on ABC’s domain, offers a peek into the features that will be offered through a DC/EP wallet, including paying via a QR code, receiving and sending payments and initiating transactions by touching another user’s phone. The application also offers users a registration option. However, it appears the registration function is so far in test mode as it only allows whitelisted users to complete the registration process. That said, the registration step shows the test is currently being carried out in four Chinese cities including Xiong’An, Suzhou, Chengdu and Shenzhen.

The U.S. will suspend funding to the World Health Organization while it reviews the agency’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday, saying the international health agency made mistakes that “caused so much death” as the coronavirus spread across the globe. “Today I’m instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Trump said at a White House press conference. Meanwhile, In a stunning turn of events, Surgeon General Jerome Adams explained in an interview on live XM radio, that the Coronavirus Task Force has, effectively, dumped the Bill Gates/CDC/WHO predictive contagion model, and is now working with the real data. He explained on the Sirius XM’s Breitbart News Daily host Alex Marlow, that given the new data, businesses will begin to re-open as early as May, others in June. This runs contrary to the out-and-out fear-mongering of Dr. Fauci and Bill Gates who have made a media tour, threatening the public that businesses may not re-open for six months to a year, or until and unless governments purchase their conveniently patented, big-pharma vaccination.

The director of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Wednesday he believes 19 or 20 US states have had limited impact from the new coronavirus and their governors believe they may be ready to reopen by President Donald Trump’s May 1 target date. “There are a number of counties within this country that have not experienced really any coronavirus despite testing,” Robert Redfield said in an interview with ABC’s “Good Morning America.””There are a number of states – 19, 20 states – that really have had limited impact from it. So I think we will see some states that are, the governors feel that they’re ready, we’re poised to assist them with that reopening,” Redfield said. Trump said on Monday evening he was close to completing a plan for ending America’s coronavirus shutdown, which has thrown millions out of work, and may restart the battered US economy in some areas even before May 1. He said around 20 states were “in extremely good shape and could reopen fairly quickly.

Chernobyl fire: Toxic fumes near nuclear disaster site could sweep across Europe 

Hundreds of emergency workers have been deployed to fight the blazes which have come dangerously close to the site of the notorious 1986 nuclear disaster. Authorities fear the fires could reach abandoned vehicles at the former plant, causing mighty explosions and spreading toxic fumes across the country and the wider region. European countries are also vulnerable, including neighbours Poland, Belarus, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova. The NASA Earth Observatory said smoke from the fires has already reached Belarus. More than 250 tonnes of water has been dropped by aircraft, the state agency for management of the exclusion zone said. Authorities sprung into action when the blaze started nine days ago. Authorities fear the flames could unleash radiation in the ground in the forests near the Chernobyl reactors. The consequences of the fires would be much more serious if flames reached the former plant, where the worse nuclear disaster in history happened in April 1986.

  Three Massive Volcanoes Erupt in Indonesia

Mount Kerinci in West Sumatra, Mount Semeru in East Java and Mount Merapi in the Central Java mountain range  demonstrated increased activity on Friday reports the Jakarta Post. That was the same day that the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted. And although all of the four volcanoes are located in the same region, their activity was unrelated. That’s because each volcano boasted a different magma chamber, reports the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG). Volcanic and tectonic activity is common in Indonesia as the southeast Asian country is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where many volcanoes and earthquakes are formed. “Volcanic eruptions in Indonesia are a common thing as they happen every day,” PVMBG director Kasbani. He added that the eruptions didn’t occur simultaneously. Anak Krakatau, a volcano that erupted from the remnants of the largest volcanic explosion recorded by the Krakatau volcano in 1883, erupted twice on Friday. During the second eruption, that volcano spewed out a 500-meter-high column of ash . The eruption lasted over a half hour.

 League of Revolutionaries, a recently formed Iraqi group that appears to be an Iranian proxy, released an approximately two-minute video threatening U.S. troops in Iraq

The video included drone footage of the Iraqi Ain Al-Assad Airbase, which hosts U.S. troops in Anbar province targeted in the January 7 Iranian missile strike in retaliation for the January 3 U.S. airstrike that killed Qassem Soleimani, who had been commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Qods Force, and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, who had been deputy commander of the Popular Mobilization Units (PMU). The video, first posted on the group’s Telegram channel, included a message addres­sing “the whole world.” The message opens with Quran 3:200: “Oh you who believe! Be patient and excel in patience and remain steadfast and be careful of your duty to Allah, that you may be successful.” It further explains that the previous release, which included footage of “the evil embassy, was not our first surveillance mission and will not be the last of them.” The video showed photos of Ain Al-Assad Airbase, describing it as the second-largest air base in Iraq and saying it housed American, British, and Iraqi troops. Switching between several locations of the base, such as a runway and a warehouse of U.S. weapons. An aerial view shows what the video describes as the “housing compound.” It also shows several military planes parked at the base. The video shows footage, apparently filmed inside the base, of military planes landing and taking off. It concludes with a message that reads: “Our eyes are watching their movements and they will not achieve what they want.” The League of Revolutionaries claimed responsibility for the March 12 rocket attacks on the Taji military base north of Baghdad that killed three members of the U.S.-led international coalition in Iraq.

The national security and foreign policy committee for the Islamic Republic of Iran’s parliament declared that Tehran will move forward with its uranium enrichment process, triggering sharp criticism from the US State Department on Thursday. According to a report in the Iranian regime’s state-controlled MEHR news agency, the foreign policy committee for Iran’s parliament “warned on Wednesday that in case Europe does not provide Iran with a practical guarantee on implementation of JCPOA, the Islamic Republic will continue its uranium enrichment to its desired level and volume.”

U.S. military base hit by rocket attack, ISIS claims responsibility

The Afghanistan affiliate of the Islamic State group launched a rocket attack Thursday on the largest based used by the U.S.-led coalition fighting terrorists in the war-torn nation. Five rockets were fired at Bagram Air Base in Kabul, but did not cause any injuries, the military said in a tweet. The rockets were launched from a car shortly before 6 a.m., local authorities told Stars and Stripes. “Foreign forces intercepted two of the rockets in the air, and the other three landed outside the base,” said Wahida Shahkar, a spokeswoman for the Parwan provincial government. Islamic State Khorasan, the name used by the group, said that it targeted a helicopter landing pad at Bagram, Reuters reported.

Two weeks after the Fed stunned markets by doing something not even Ben Bernanke dared to do, start buying investment grade corporate bonds, today the Fed’s nationalization of the entire bond market was complete when the Fed – with the blessing of the Treasury – threw the kitchen sink at the most vulnerable verticals of the bond market – junk bonds, munis and CLOs and… waved it in. And with that the only thing missing from the Fed’s total takeover of capital markets is equities, which the Fed will start buying after the next crash. Until we wait here is a complete summary of everything the Fed announced this morning, when it released the details of the $2.3 trillion in loans and purchases to “support the billionaires economy”, which will consist of:

1. Main Street Lending Program,
2. Paycheck Protection Program Lending Facility,
3. New Municipal Liquidity Facility,
4. Expansion of existing primary and secondary corporate bond buying facilities.

These Fed’s loans and facilities are based on the additional capital the Treasury has made available under the CARES Act. Of the total $454bn that Congress appropriated to backstop Fed facilities, this morning’s announcements commits $195bn, leaving the majority of funds available for other purposes – like stocks – or to expand these programs if necessary. That said, the programs the Fed announced this morning cover essentially all of the areas in which we have expected the Fed to act, so we do not expect the Fed to announce any further facilities for the time being.

Saudis, Russians Bury Differences, but Mexico Threatens Oil Deal

Russia and Saudi Arabia have called off their brutal price war and are now pushing dozens of major crude producers toward a deal that would slash production and help stabilize a market that’s been rocked by the coronavirus pandemic. A marathon video conference between OPEC members and other major energy powers on Thursday ended with a tentative deal to reduce production by 10 million barrels per day in May and June, the deepest cut ever agreed by the world’s oil producers. But there was a snag: Mexico declined to support the agreement, and meeting participants acknowledged in a statement that final agreement is conditional on the country’s consent. Attention has now turned to another round of talks between the Group of 20, which includes Mexico.Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador told reporters that he had discussed the issue with US President Donald Trump, and agreed to cut production by 100,000 barrels per day, which is far less than the 400,000 barrels per day other producers had sought on Thursday.According to López Obrador, Trump offered during the phone call to cut US production by 250,000 barrels per day to compensate for Mexico. The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Friday.

This is totally unprecedented. We have never ever reacted so quickly to a crisis as this one.”

  Two Version of Digital Dollar Emerge as Contenders

Private Companies Could Play Role in Digital Currency Issuance, Bank of England Says

The coronavirus pandemic is the biggest global crisis since the events that sparked the creation of Bitcoin (BTC) in 2008, and is one that will also have long-lasting effects on the economy. World governments are taking unprecedented measures to cope with the economic fallout of the virus, namely through the third coronavirus relief bill, which was approved by the United States Congress earlier this month and constitutes the biggest stimulus package in the country’s history at $2.2 trillion. During the negotiations for the third emergency bill, one of the drafts submitted by House Democrats — the first version of the Take Responsibility for Workers and Families Act — caught the attention of the cryptosphere with mentions of a digital dollar, hinting at the creation of a U.S. central bank digital currency that could possibly be underlied by blockchain technology.  Crypto digital dollar vs the Fed’s digital dollar: Despite sharing the same name, these two versions of the digital dollar have many differences. While the Fed’s digital dollar would not use blockchain technology, the crypto digital dollar would place it at the heart of the project. It goes without saying that the Fed’s digital dollar would be centralized by design, while Giancarlo’s digital dollar aims to take another path. While there are arguments to be made for both cases, Giancarlo’s vision seems more aligned with that of Bitcoin advocates. It proposes a “government-sanctioned blockchain protocol,” one that would still allow for issuance to be controlled by the government but would ultimately involve more entities in the process, as the ledger would be maintained and administered by independent private entities.

Joel Osteen Easter Sunday Service To Feature Kanye West, Mariah Carey, Tyler Perry

Although the pandemic’s social distancing protocols prevent large mass gatherings this Easter Sunday, Pastor Joel Osteen’s Lakewood megachurch has an all-star plan for the faithful. The virtual Easter Sunday service will feature Kanye West, Mariah Carey, and Tyler Perry, plus the Lakewood choir. The pre-taped program will air online and will be available to the public. Osteen told TMZ that Carey reached out to him about joining the service. Carey will perform her song Hero as a salute to first medical professionals and first responders working during the pandemic. “I have known Mariah from years past, and we’d talked about doing some things,” Osteen said. “They actually contacted us because she wanted to show some support and honor to the first responder… and do her part to bring hope and uplift the nation.” What Kanye West will do is unclear. He previously appeared at the church for an Osteen interview session last November. However, West’s Sunday Service has been a popular draw in its various incarnations around the country. Finally, filmmaker Tyler Perry, a past Lakewood church speaker, will address the church. Osteen did not reveal the subject matter.

Six critically ill coronavirus patients in Israel who are considered high-risk for mortality have been treated with Pluristem’s placenta-based cell-therapy product and survived, according to preliminary data provided by the Haifa-based company. The patients were treated at three different Israeli medical centers for one week under the country’s compassionate use program and were suffering from acute respiratory failure and inflammatory complications associated with COVID-19. Four of the patients also demonstrated failure of other organ systems, including cardiovascular and kidney failure. Not only have all the patients survived, according to Pluristem, but four of them showed improvement in respiratory parameters and three of them are in the advanced stages of weaning from ventilators. Moreover, two of the patients with preexisting medical conditions are showing clinical recovery in addition to the respiratory improvement.

US confirms first case of H7N3 bird flu since 2017

The US Department of Agriculture on Thursday confirmed the country’s first case of virulent avian flu in commercial poultry since 2017. The agency found H7N3 avian influenza, a virulent or highly pathogenic strain, in a turkey flock in Chesterfield County, South Carolina, according to a statement. No human cases of the virus have been detected and there is no immediate public health concern, the USDA said. The worst-ever US outbreak of avian flu in 2014 and 2015 killed about 50 million birds, most of which were egg-laying hens in Iowa.

New, larger wave of locusts threatens millions in Africa

Weeks before the coronavirus spread through much of the world, parts of Africa were already threatened by another kind of plague, the biggest locust outbreak some countries had seen in 70 years. Now the second wave of the voracious insects, some 20 times the size of the first, is arriving. Billions of the young desert locusts are winging in from breeding grounds in Somalia in search of fresh vegetation springing up with seasonal rains. Millions of already vulnerable people are at risk. And as they gather to try to combat the locusts, often in vain, they risk spreading the virus — a topic that comes a distant second for many in rural areas.

Tropical Cyclone “Harold” aftermath: Widespread destruction across Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji and Tonga

Tropical Cyclone “Harold” lashed Tonga on Thursday, April 9, 2020, after leaving major destruction across the Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, and Fiji. Harold is the first Category 5 severe tropical cyclone to form in the South Pacific basin since 2018 and so far the strongest storm of the 2019/20 South Pacific cyclone season. The storm demolished almost all tourist resorts in Tonga with winds of up to 260 km/h (162 mph). Harold intensified again into a Category 5 storm by early Thursday, April 9, leaving meteorologists surprised as forecasts initially showed that the storm’s strength was dropping. Prior to the storm’s arrival, the government had declared a state of emergency– the second time in a month, following a similar declaration for the global pandemic, COVID-19. Strong winds caused power disruptions in parts of the island, particularly the capital Nuku’alofa. Heavy rains caused extensive damage to vegetation as well. At least three tourist resorts in the north had been completely eradicated, according to the authorities.

A strong explosive eruption took place at Sheveluch volcano, Kamchatka, Russia at 19:10 UTC on April 8, 2020. According to the Tokyo VAAC, volcanic ash column rose up to 10 km (33 000 feet) above sea level by 21:20 UTC, drifting SSE. Satellite data by KVERT showed an ash cloud was about 230 km (143 miles) SE of the volcano at 03:50 UTC. “Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues. Ash explosions up to 10 – 15 km (32 800 – 49 200 feet) a.s.l. could occur at any time. Ongoing activity could affect international and low-flying aircraft,” KVERT said in its latest VONA, released 04:12 UTC.

  Netanyahu Considers Pascal Lamb Sacrifice on Temple Mount for First time in 2,000 Years

The Sanhedrin tasked Shimshon Elboim, head of the Temple Mount Organizations, with submitting a letter to Prime Minister Netanyahu to perform the ritual korban Pesach (Passover sacrifice) in its proper place, the Temple Mount, and in its Biblically mandated time, Wednesday afternoon, the eve of the Passover feast. the non-rejection signals a change of heart for the prime minister who stated one month ago that he rejected an agreement with the right-wing Otzma Yehudit party that would have permitted Jews to pray on the Temple Mount. Netanyahu admitted that he preferred to lose the election rather than give his permission to Jewish prayer on the Temple Mount. But it is not only Netanyahu who is having a change of heart about the renewal of Torah rituals. The Hebrew language ultra-Orthodox news site, Kikar Shabbat, reported that a Haredi organization named Torat HaKedoshim is now calling for the renewal of the korban Pesach as a solution for the coronavirus. This is surprising since most ultra-Orthodox leaders have instructed their followers to avoid ascending to the Temple Mount despite an exponential growth in Jews appearing at their holiest site in recent years. This announcement in Kikar Shabbat is believed to be the first time any self-identified ultra-Orthodox group has made such a move. The Sanhedrin emphasized that the plan to bring the altar to the Temple Mount was entirely consistent with President Trump’s recently released Deal of the Century which recognized Israel’s full sovereignty over the site.

Four French frigates entered Lebanese docks on Tuesday, March 24th. According to a report by Al-Joumhouria, the ‘sophisticated’ French frigates are being ‘gifted’ to the Lebanese Military and will be joining the navy. The Lebanese government, and hence its military are fully controlled by Hezbollah and the terror organization’s allies. French ambassador to Beirut, Bruno Fouche, ‘personally supervised the operation’. Fouche even boarded one of the battleships that were delivered to Lebanon from the Toulon Naval Base in southern France.

Explosion on Road in Southeast Turkey Kills 5

An improvised explosive device went off on a road in southeast Turkey on Wednesday, killing five forestry workers traveling to work, officials said. The regional governor’s office blamed the early morning explosion near the town of Kulp, in the mainly-Kurdish populated Diyarbakir province, on Kurdish rebels, who have carried out similar attacks in the past. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. The Diyarbakir governor’s office said Turkey’s military has launched an operation to catch the perpetrators of the attack.

Afghanistan peace deal: Taliban walk out of ‘fruitless’ talks

The Taliban have walked out of landmark talks which were supposed to help pave the path to peace in Afghanistan. A spokesman for the militant group said the first face-to-face discussions with the government had proved “fruitless”. Talks have broken down over a prisoner swap agreed between the US and Taliban. It was meant to be a step towards ending the war, but the Taliban say Afghan officials are trying to delay the release, while officials say the militants’ demands are unreasonable. According to Matin Bek, a member of the government’s negotiating team, the Taliban wanted the release of 15 commanders believed to be involved in what were referred to as big attacks. “We cannot release the killers of our people,” he said. But the Taliban spokesman accused President Ashraf Ghani’s administration of delaying the prisoner release “under one pretext or another”.

UN condemns rocket attack on Tripoli hospital

The United Nations has condemned the shelling of a hospital in Tripoli, calling it a “clear violation of international law” as Libya struggles to prepare for an outbreak of the new coronavirus. On Monday, projectiles struck the grounds of the Al Khadra General Hospital located in an area held by the internationally recognised government near a front line, injuring at least six health workers. Jens Laerke, spokesman for the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), told a news conference held via video link that the UN was “appalled” to learn of the shelling. He read out a statement by Humanitarian Coordinator for Libya, Yacoub El Hillo. “At a moment when people in Libya needed nothing more than a safe home and functioning medical facilities, we received the news of yet another attack on a hospital,” the statement said.

 Somali Officials Confirm US Airstrike Killed Senior Al-Shabab Leader

A Somali intelligence official has confirmed that a U.S. airstrike in southern Somalia killed a senior leader of militant group al-Shabab. The official in Somalia’s southwest region told VOA that the airstrike on April 2 killed Yusuf Jiis, a long-standing, high-ranking leader in the al-Qaida-affiliated group. The airstrike took place near Bush Madina, about 55 kilometers east of the town of Dinsor, in a Shabab-controlled area. “This individual was a key leader in the al-Shabab organization,” said U.S. Army Gen. Stephen Townsend, commander of U.S. Africa Command. “He was violent, ruthless and responsible for the loss of many innocent lives. His removal makes Somalia and neighboring countries safer.” Separately, the U.S. military Tuesday said airstrikes also killed five al-Shabab militants this past Monday in the vicinity of Jilib town in Lower Jubba region. AFRICOM said its current assessment is that no civilians were injured or killed, adding that Africa Command is aware of reports alleging civilian casualties resulting from Monday’s airstrikes. The U.S. military has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Somalia since the early 2010s as part of efforts to defeat al-Shabab. The group has tried to overthrow the Somali government in order to impose its version of strict Islamic law on the Horn of Africa nation.

Some 1.25 billion workers are seeing their livelihoods threatened by the COVID-19 pandemic, the United Nations said Tuesday, warning it was the “worst global crisis” since World War II. In a fresh study, the International Labor Organization warned that the global spread of the new coronavirus and the drastic measures taken to rein in the disease would, during the second quarter of 2020 alone, wipe out 6.7 percent of working hours globally. That is equivalent to 195 million full-time workers, the UN agency pointed out. The study comes as the number of cases of the new coronavirus, which first emerged in China late last year, soared past 1.35 million worldwide, including more than 75,500 deaths, according to a tally compiled by AFP from official sources. The report found that the Asia Pacific region would see the greatest loss in hours worked, with the equivalent of 125 million full-time jobs obliterated there over the next three months.

In the time since, prices have collapsed. International benchmark Brent crude traded Wednesday over $34 a barrel as U.S. benchmark West Texas crude traded under $25. Iranian state television quoted Oil Minister Bijan Zabganeh as saying he discussed the “method of decision-making” for the meeting Thursday with OPEC’s president, as well as his Kuwaiti and Russian counterparts. “Other producers, including the U.S. and Canada, should participate in this topic and there should be an agreement about production base of each country that is a basis for production cut,” Zanganeh was quoted as saying. The U.S. and Canada are not part of OPEC. However, U.S. officials have been in discussions with other oil producers over the price collapse, which has hurt American shale oil firms.

The Bank of Korea (BOK) has launched a new pilot program for a central bank digital currency (CBDC) amid concerns other nations could take the lead if it sits on the sidelines. The South Korean central bank said Monday it had reevaluated the CBDC proposal after observing that other developed nations, including neighboring Japan and its close ally the U.S., were moving forward with their own digital currency plans faster than anticipated. Abandoning their wait-and-see approach, BOK officials have now pushed the central bank into a 22-month pilot program – which started this month – to assess the technical and legal ramifications of replacing physical cash with a digital equivalent. “The U.S. and Japan had had no plans to issue a CBDC in the near future, but they changed their stance recently to enhance research in the emerging area,” said an official, speaking to The Korea Times. “The BOK also decided to remain proactive in the rapid shift in payment environments here and abroad, so we are going to set up the CBDC pilot system and check technical and legal issues surrounding its introduction here.”

Housebound and bored, people appear to be drinking more booze, toking more weed, watching more porn and smoking more butts. These behaviours may alleviate the monotony of short-term lockdown stress but store up costs for the future. The World Health Organization’s guidelines on maintaining a sound mind in the face of a pandemic counsel against abusing tobacco, alcohol or other drugs. But the agency also argued that individuals should consider strategies that have worked for them in the past. For many this has meant giving in to temptation. The virtual-sex trade has got a lift: Pornhub, the leading adult entertainment website, saw a near-12% increase in global traffic from Feb. 24 to March 17. British lingerie chain Ann Summers said sex toy sales were up 27% in the last week of March compared to the same period a year ago, with its quietest vibrator fast becoming its best seller. Self-medicating is all the rage. U.S. states including California, Colorado, Oregon and Alaska where cannabis is legal have reported 50% sales increases from March 16 and March 22, according to Flowhub. Online booze sales in the United States rose 243% in the week ending March 21, according to market research firm Nielsen. Binge buying drove British alcohol sales up 22% in March, according to Kantar. Comfort eating is in, too. Nestlé boss Mark Schneider says the $310 billion KitKat maker is struggling to keep snacks on the shelves and reckons they’re just as important as essential nutrients in stressful times. The risk is that while most people will survive Covid-19, more of them emerge with porn addictions, liver damage and obesity, imposing a longer-term challenge for health systems battered by the virus. The smart money may have already figured this out: Shares of Novo Nordisk, the world’s biggest maker of diabetes treatments, have outperformed them all.

Pot Use Reached All-Time High in March Amid Lockdown Measures

Cannabis use hit an all-time high in March as lockdown measures spread across the U.S., giving people more free time with less to do. A March survey of 2,500 consumers by Cowen & Co. found that 33% had tried cannabis at some point in their lives, a record high. For the past month, 12.8% of respondents said they’d used pot, above the 12.5% average in 2019. Sales spiked in mid-March as people rushed to stock up ahead of potential dispensary closures, Cowen said, using data from cannabis analytics firm Headset Inc. Weekly sales growth peaked at 64% in the week ended March 16, the highest rate of increase since at least the beginning of 2019. However, sales decelerated during the last two weeks of the month to the mid- to high-single-digit range. This may be linked to a “more pronounced deterioration in job security for past-month cannabis consumers relative to the general population,” according to analysts led by Vivien Azer.

An official with the International Criminal Court in The Hague has informed lawyer Larry Klayman of Freedom Watch that his complaint against China for its handling of the coronavirus pandemic is under consideration. Mark P. Dillon, head of the information and evidence unit of the ICC, cautioned Klayman in a letter that the acknowledgement does not mean an investigation has been opened or will be opened by the Office of the Prosecutor. Klayman said he’s “confident that the International Criminal Court will proceed with a criminal investigation and indict the Chinese leadership.” “Their crimes against humanity over the COVID-19 pandemic are severe and mounting each minute. The world demands justice for the death and destruction they have caused and continue to cause,” said Klayman, a former Justice Department prosecutor.

   Likud, Blue and White nearing deal after threat

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Blue and White chairman Benny Gantz met at Netanyahu’s Jerusalem residence on Monday in an effort to reach an understanding regarding the formation of a national emergency government, following a threat issued by Gantz. In a joint statement, Likud and Blue and White said negotiations were currently underway and were being carried out in a positive and constructive manner toward forming a government as quickly as possible. For instance, both sides agreed to maintain status quo on matters of religion and state and make changes that Shas requested to the controversial haredi (ultra-Orthodox) draft bill. Earlier, Gantz, who is also Knesset speaker, warned Netanyahu that if he would not make concessions leading to the signing of an agreement by Monday afternoon he would enable the advancement of anti-Netanyahu legislation.

Israel arrests Palestinian governor of Jerusalem

Israel has arrested the Palestinian governor of Jerusalem, Adnan Ghaith, over “illegal” activities and put him behind bars once again. “Adnan Ghaith was detained this morning for Palestinian activity in Jerusalem, which is illegal,” police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld told AFP news agency. His lawyer, Rami Othman, said Ghaith, who was taken for questioning, was apprehended primarily due to Palestinian activity related to the coronavirus outbreak. A video circulating on social media showed Ghaith, wearing rubber gloves and smoking a cigarette, escorted out of his occupied East Jerusalem home by police.

Five missiles fired at ‘American’ oil company in Iraq

Amid rising tensions between Iran and the US, five missiles were fired at an “American oil company,” Iran’s Fars News Agency reported Monday. Photos posted online showed several rockets and a rocket launcher that were discovered in the wake of the attack. The rockets appeared to be the same 107mm rockets used in attacks on US forces over the last year. The report is based on an Iraqi report Monday morning that rockets had been fired at a company linked to Halliburton. How the website knew this is unclear, and photos were not available from the scene. It was also unclear who fired the alleged rockets; it could also be blamed on ISIS. However, the alleged rocket attack fits a pattern of dozens of such attacks on bases housing US troops and against the US Embassy.

Russia Changes Laws To Allow Putin Stay In Power Up To 2036

Dutifully performing its role in a highly-choreographed display of political theatre, Russia’s highest court on Monday approved constitutional changes that opened the way for President Vladimir V. Putin to crash through term limits and stay in power through 2036. With a dense 52-page ruling clogged with legalese, the Constitutional Court removed one of the last, albeit very flimsy potential obstacles to Mr Putin effectively becoming president for life. A final hurdle to be crossed is a nationwide referendum on constitutional changes that is scheduled for April 22. That exercise, too, is little more than a formality because of the Kremlin’s tight grip on the news media and bodies responsible for organising the vote, not to speak of a ban on public protests.

Due to coronavirus, Turkey boasts it’s now ‘one of world’s new superpowers’

The editor of a Turkish publication that serves as a mouthpiece for the repressive regime contends thes West’s systems financial, political and social structures  are collapsing and Turkey has become one of the world’s “new superpowers.” Ibrahim Karagul, editor of the Yeni Safak daily, wrote that it “seems that everything produced and imposed to the world by the West in the form of a global discourse and order is coming to an end, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute. The West, he wrote, “has already lost its ‘central’ power.” “The West’s financial system is collapsing,” he said. “Its political system and discourse are collapsing. Its security theories are collapsing. Its social theories are collapsing. Humanity no longer has any expectation of them.” In it’s place, he said, Turkey “is one of the world’s new superpowers.” “If there are going to be any countries to rise post-corona – and there will be – Turkey is going to be one of them,” wrote Karagul.

   Houthis launch ballistic missile attack against Yemen’s Saada

The Houthi militia fired a ballistic missile in a densely populated area in Yemen’s Saada on Sunday, state news agency SPA reported. The Arab coalition spokesperson Col. Turki Al-Maliki said the missile was launched from Sanaa and fell in Al-Safra district in Saada province. He added that the Iranian-backed Houthi militia continues to violate international humanitarian law by launching strikes against civilian areas. Earlier, the Yemeni oil ministry said the Houthi militia targeted an oil pipeline in Marib’s Safar oil field, east of Yemen. The ministry said the attack was considered a crime and an affirmation to how Houthis are seeking to destroy all Yemeni people’s capabilities.

Saudi Arabia is taking unprecedented action in delaying the release of its international crude selling prices by five days, a senior Saudi source familiar with the matter said on Sunday, as the kingdom and other major producers seek to halt the free-fall in worldwide crude prices. But oil prices fell anew at the open of Asian trading as the weekend did not bring major producers Saudi Arabia, Russia and the United States any closer to resolving a growing supply glut that is overwhelming markets. A month-long price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia, against the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic, has cut the price of crude to $34 a barrel from $65. Members of OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, have stepped up efforts to resolve the dispute in recent days, but they have called on other big producers – including the United States – to be involved. The Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries is expected to meet Thursday – delayed from Monday – to discuss cutting production to alleviate a supply glut as fuel demand is expected to fall by about a third worldwide due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Universal Base Income- Begins in Spain

The Spanish government is working to roll out a universal basic income as soon as possible, as part of a battery of actions aimed at countering the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, according to Economy Minister Nadia Calvino. Social Security Minister Jose Luis Escriva is coordinating the project and plans to put some sort of basic income “in place as soon as possible,” with the main focus on assisting families, Calvino, who also serves as deputy prime minister, said in an interview Sunday night with Spanish broadcaster La Sexta. But the government’s broader ambition is that basic income becomes an instrument “that stays forever, that becomes a structural instrument, a permanent instrument,” she said.

Food bank shortages expected to hit Washington state by mid-April

Big-box stores including Walmart, Target to stop selling nonessentials in Vermont

Shoppers in Vermont searching for items like toys and clothing in the aisles of Walmart, Target and Costco will have to go elsewhere to find them. The state’s Agency of Commerce and Community Development announced on Tuesday that to reduce the spread of the coronavirus, it has ordered big-box retailers to limit its in-person sales to only essential items, including food, beverages and medicine. The order declared a host of goods — from clothing, toys, electronics and jewelry to paint, gardening and sports equipment — off limits to in-store customers.

NetCents Declares Readiness for Expected US Federal Reserve “Digital Dollar”

Central bank digital currency, or CBDC, differs from virtual currency and cryptocurrency as it is established by a state’s monetary authorities. NetCents Technology Inc., a disruptive cryptocurrency payments technologies company, is pleased to announce that it has completed internally designated preparation for the expected US Government backed cryptocurrency, “Central Bank Digital Currency” (CBDC). NetCents jumped into action as soon as it learned of the plans US Congress made to legislate for this US Federal Reserve Digital Currency as part of two different versions of the first COVID-19 Stimulus Bill (“Stimulus Bill” or the “Bill”). Ultimately this aspect of the legislation wasn’t included in the final version of the first Stimulus Bill, but the Board and Advisors of NetCents have agreed that this “Digital Dollar” will be included in subsequent legislation. The Bill is expected to establish a “Digital Dollar”, defined as ‘a balance expressed as a dollar value consisting of digital ledger entries that are recorded as liabilities in the accounts of any Federal Reserve Bank or … an electronic unit of value, redeemable by an eligible financial institution.’ This will create a cryptocurrency backed and guaranteed by the US Federal Government. The Bill goes on to define a digital wallet, and a requirement that US chartered banks offer these wallets.

China joins UN Human Rights Council

China has been appointed to a panel on the controversial U.N. Human Rights Council, where it will help vet candidates for important posts — despite its decades-long record of systematic human rights abuse that the U.S. has said fueled the coronavirus pandemic. Jiang Duan, minister at the Chinese Mission in Geneva, was appointed to the U.N. Human Rights Council’s Consultative Group — where he will serve as the representative of the Asia-Pacific states. He will serve as one of five representatives for blocs of countries and is joined by delegates from Spain, Slovenia and Chad. U.N. Watch, a Geneva-based human rights watchdog, first reported the development in Geneva, and reacted furiously to the move, saying it was “absurd and immoral” for the U.N. to allow the Chinese regime a key role in selecting human rights officials. “Allowing China’s oppressive and inhumane regime to choose the world investigators on freedom of speech, arbitrary detention and enforced disappearances is like making a pyromaniac into the town fire chief,” said Hillel Neuer, U.N. Watch’s Executive Director said.

Maltese Court orders seizure of €29.5m of assets belonging to ‘Vatican Bank’

In the latest Vatican yearbook, the Annuario Pontificio, the title “Vicar of Christ” does not appear on the listing for Pope Francis. Int he 2020 edition of the Annuario, the page devoted to Pope Francis is headed simply by his name: Jorge Maria Bergoglio. Past editions have always been headed by the titles accorded to the Pope, beginning with “Vicar of Jesus Christ.” Other titles have been “Successor of the Prince of the Apostles, Supreme Pontiff of the Universal Church, Primate of Italy, Archbishop and Metropolitan of the Roman province, Sovereign of the Vatican City-State.” In the 2020 edition, these titles appear at the bottom of the page devoted to Pope Francis, identified only as “historical” titles. Such a change would undoubtedly have required the approval of the Pontiff. To date the Vatican has not issued any explanation for the change. Meanwhile, The Maltese Civil Court has ordered the seizure of €29.5m of assets belonging to the Istituto per le Opere di Religione (IOR, or Institute for the Works of Religion), commonly referred to as the “Vatican Bank.” The order came after Maltese companies Futura Funds and Futura Investment Management, jointly with Luxembourg-based company Cougar Real Estate, instituted court proceedings before Malta’s Civil Courts against the IOR.

East Africa locust swarms gather as coronavirus curbs delay pesticides

Coronavirus-linked flight restrictions are hampering efforts to wipe out locust swarms on the verge of devastating crops in eastern Africa, the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) said. The curbs have delayed deliveries of pesticides and, at the current rate of spraying, stocks in Kenya will run out within four days, Cyril Ferrand, FAO’s head of resilience for Eastern Africa, told Reuters on Thursday. “If we fail in the current (regional) control operations, because of lack of pesticides, then we could see 4 million more people struggle to feed their families,” Ferrand said. Locust numbers exploded late last year, encouraged by unusual weather patterns amplified by climate change, and swarms disbursed eastwards from Yemen, with Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia the hardest hit countries. The first invasion that terrorized farmers in a region where 20 million people struggle for food has given birth to a second wave of insects just as new-season crops are being planted. “They are very active, very voracious, and very mobile,” Ferrand said. “…If we don’t have pesticides, our planes cannot fly and people cannot spray and if we are not able to control these swarms, we will have big damage to crops.”

Tiger at NYC’s Bronx Zoo tests positive for coronavirus

A tiger at the Bronx Zoo has tested positive for the new coronavirus, in what is believed to be the first known infection in an animal in the U.S. or a tiger anywhere, federal officials and the zoo said Sunday. The 4-year-old Malayan tiger, and six other tigers and lions that have also fallen ill, are believed to have been infected by a zoo employee, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. The first animal started showing symptoms March 27, and all are expected to recover, said the zoo, which has been closed to the public since March 16. The finding raises new questions about transmission of the virus in animals. The USDA says there are no known cases of the virus in U.S. pets or livestock. “It’s important to assure pet owners and animal owners that at this time there isn’t any evidence that they can spread the virus,” said Dr. Jane Rooney, a veterinarian and a USDA official.

4.3 quake shakes southern Israel

A small earthquake measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale was felt Sunday in the area surrounding the southern city of Eilat. The Geological Survey of Israel said the earthquake’s epicenter was in the Gulf of Eilat some 100 km (60 miles) south of the resort port city in an area between Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The last serious temblor in the same area was a powerful 7.3 quake in 1995, which killed eight people in Egypt and Saudi Arabia and damaged several buildings in Eilat, where one Israeli tourist died of a heart attack. “Storms, coronavirus and now earthquake, what else? The 10 plagues? God save us,” Eilat resident Galit Adler Malka told Ynet, referring to the upcoming Passover holiday that begins Wednesday evening and recounts the 10 plagues that preceded the biblical exodus from Egypt.

Earthquake shakes Lebanon and Syria

A small earthquake in the eastern Mediterranean was felt across parts of Lebanon and Syria on Friday. “Residents in Beirut, Zgharta, Batroun, Tripoli and Akkar felt an earthquake that lasted for several seconds,” Lebanon’s state-run National News Agency said. The earthquake measured 4.7 on the Richter Scale at a depth of 20 kilometres, some 65 kilometres from the coastal city of Latakia, Syria’s state news agency SANA reported. The shaking was felt in Latakia Tartous, Hama, Homs, and Aleppo.

As if 2020 has not already walloped us beyond belief, brace yourself for more of nature’s power: Because of warm seas and favorable weather patterns, this Atlantic hurricane season could include a greater-than-average number of major hurricanes. Forecasters from Colorado State University’s Tropical Meteorology Project, led by research scientist Phil Klotzbach, announced on Thursday that although there are 2.7 major hurricanes during a typical season — between June 1 and Nov. 30 — eight hurricanes are expected this year. And this includes four major hurricanes, with winds of at least 111 miles per hour. And if that isn’t enough to deal with, up to 16 tropical storms, four more than the average, are predicted in the upcoming season.

   Texas Governor Deems Religious Services Essential

As authorities arrest pastors for holding Sunday services in defiance of social distancing orders, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Tuesday that religious services are to be considered essential in his state. Abbott issued an executive order relating to statewide continuity of essential services and activities during the coronavirus pandemic. The order mandated that all Texans will minimize social gatherings and in-person contact with people who are not in the same household, and, among other statutes, clarified that religious services conducted in churches, congregations, and houses of worship are to be considered essential services.

  Jaffa riots continue for a second day, rocks thrown towards firefighters

A number of young people in Jaffa, some of which were minors, set fire to dumpsters and threw rocks and bricks toward the road on Yefet Street, later throwing rocks at a fire truck which arrived on the scene on Thursday to extinguish the dumpster-fire. As a result, two firefighters suffered minor injuries and the truck received minor damage. Later on Thursday, police arrested a 17-year-old Jaffa resident in suspicion of arson and throwing rocks, finding incendiary devices in his possession after conducting a search. On Wednesday, A riot erupted in Jaffa after police arrested a man who allegedly violated the Health Ministry’s coronavirus quarantine orders, police reported. Dozens of people took part in the protest, which also took place on Yefet street, n the Ajami neighborhood of Jaffa, where many Arab-Israelis reside.

  Social unrest rising as Italy’s lockdown enters 4th week

As Italy enters its fourth week under lockdown, tensions are building across the poorest southern regions of Campania, Calabria, Sicily and Puglia as people run out of food and money. The number of checkpoints has increased nationwide to discourage people from going out. But instead of staying home as required by the government, there have been reports of shop owners being pressured to give food for free, and police are patrolling supermarkets in some areas to stop thefts. Small but vocal crowds of unemployed have gathered in front of city halls in the south, calling for financial help to buy food. “Give us something, it’s tough,” read a sign protesters held up in the city of Messina. Police dispersed the crowd and identified some of the demonstrators. “They haven’t been working for weeks as everything has stopped because of coronavirus. Now they have no money left to buy food, and they don’t qualify for state aid,” said a policeman, adding that some of his colleagues gave demonstrators sandwiches and cigarettes to calm them down. Similar scenes were witnessed in the Naples and Bari hinterland. Investigators are concerned that this could be a visible sign that the situation is heating up

Unlike in the 2008 financial crisis when a glut of subprime debt, layered with trillions in CDOs and CDO squareds, sent home prices to stratospheric levels before everything crashed scarring an entire generation of homebuyers, this time the housing sector is facing a far more conventional problem: the sudden and unpredictable inability of mortgage borrowers to make their scheduled monthly payments as the entire economy grinds to a halt due to the coronavirus pandemic. And unfortunately this time the crisis will be far worse, because as Bloomberg reports mortgage lenders are preparing for the biggest wave of delinquencies in history. And unless the plan to buy time works – and as we reported earlier there is a distinct possibility the Treasury’s plan to provide much needed liquidity to America’s small businesses may be on the verge of collapse – an even worse crisis may be coming: mass foreclosures and mortgage market mayhem. Borrowers who lost income from the coronavirus, which is already a skyrocketing number as the 10 million new jobless claims in the past two weeks attests, can ask to skip payments for as many as 180 days at a time on federally backed mortgages, and avoid penalties and a hit to their credit scores. But as Bloomberg notes, it’s not a payment holiday and eventually homeowners they’ll have to make it all up. According to estimates by Moody’s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi, as many as 30% of Americans with home loans – about 15 million households – could stop paying if the U.S. economy remains closed through the summer or beyond.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said his country is ready to work with the Trump administration to halt the freefall of oil prices. His comments come after a phone call with President Trump earlier this week. Putin also noted that the daily oil output should be cut by around 10 million barrels, as there is lower demand due to coronavirus. Oil prices went started dwindling after OPEC+ countries disagreed on production cuts, with Saudi Arabia refusing to lower the output. With an ongoing “price war” between Russia and Saudi Arabia driving prices even further down, US president Trump said on Thursday that “it would be great” if the two countries could make a deal to limit production. Putin had already spoken to Trump by phone earlier this week, and on Friday announced that he is ready to cut production by 10 million barrels per day. No talks between Moscow and Riyadh have yet taken place, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on Friday. However, non-OPEC member Azerbaijan announced that the petroleum bloc and its allies will hold discussions on Monday aimed at restoring “balance to the oil market.”

Overstretched food pantries are switching to drive-thrus and home deliveries to minimize the spread of Covid-19 as almost 300 million Americans are urged to stay at home.

   Google releases location data to show if coronavirus lockdowns working in 131 countries

Alphabet Inc’s (GOOGL.O) Google on Thursday published reports for 131 countries showing whether visits to shops, parks and workplaces dropped in March, when many governments issued stay-at-home orders to rein in the spread of the novel coronavirus. Google’s analysis of location data from billions of users’ phones is the largest public dataset available to help health authorities assess if people are abiding with shelter-in-place and similar orders issued across the world. Its reports show charts that compare traffic from Feb. 16 to March 29 at subway, train and bus stations, grocery stores and other broad categories of places with a five-week period earlier this year. Facebook Inc (FB.O), which like Google has billions of users, has shared location data with non-governmental researchers that are producing similar reports for authorities in several countries. But the social media giant has not published any findings. Infectious disease specialists have said analyzing travel across groups by age, income and other demographics could help shape public service announcements. Google, which infers demographics from users’ internet use as well as some data given when signing up to Google services, said it was not reporting demographic information. The company said, though, it was open to including additional information and countries in follow-up reports.

Bill Gates Calls for a “Digital Certificate” to Identify Who Received COVID-19 Vaccine

And these certificates will also be used to identify who can conduct business or not. Here’s how this plan is already backed by a massive organization called ID2020.

United Nations wants 10% of entire planet’s annual income in fund for coronavirus response

The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has announced the creation of a fund for addressing the global coronavirus pandemic – and he is simultaneously asking nations to contribute the equivalent of at least 10 percent of the annual income of the entire planet to a massive “human-centered, innovative and coordinated stimulus package” that would be administered at the international level. Although Guterres doesn’t state it explicitly, he seems to be connecting the new fund, which he calls a “dedicated COVID-19 Response and Recovery Fund,” with the massive stimulus package plan, announcing both measures in the same press release. If countries were to accept the plan, the United Nations or some similar coordinating agency would be given the equivalent of approximately 8.7 trillion USD, an unprecedented amount that would be 2,900 times greater than the UN’s annual budget of 3 billion USD. The proposed plan would effectively place a global agency, presumably the UN itself, in charge of propping up the economies of the world during the coronavirus crisis, placing it in charge of 10% of global income.

LGBT Lobby Attacks Rev. Franklin Graham for Christian Outreach in New York

The LGBT lobby group Accountable for Equality has launched an attack on Christian pastor Franklin Graham for recruiting Christian volunteers for coronavirus relief work in New York. As part of their “No Time for Nonsense” campaign, Accountable for Equality issued a press release accusing Rev. Graham and his Christian outreach Samaritan’s Purse of “putting New Yorkers’ lives on the line” by recruiting Christians who believe marriage is the union of one man and one woman. The many Christian volunteers working for Samaritan’s Purse adhere to a statement of Christian principles, including on the nature of matrimony, which basically sums up the traditional view of marriage that reigned in the United States and the rest of the Western world until roughly 2015, and which is still a core teaching of the Catholic Church as well as many other Christian denominations. The gay lobby wants Graham’s money but they do not want the Christian worldview that inspires people to give money to his organization or to volunteer their time to serve others. Accountable for Equality and other LGBT advocacy groups have expressed their revulsion at the idea that a Christian charitable organization should openly appeal for Christian volunteers as Franklin Graham does.

Amazon Delivery Driver Caught On Camera Spitting On Package

A Los Angeles resident has complained that an Amazon delivery driver spit on their package after dropping it off on their porch. The strange delivery was caught on the home owner’s Ring camera. In the footage, the delivery man can be seen approaching the house with the package and then setting it down before spitting on it. He then proceeded to smear his spit around the box. He can then be seen taking a few pictures before leaving. Luckily, a neighbor witnessed the incident and informed the homeowner before they handled the package. “We must not let the drug cartels exploit the [coronavirus] pandemic to threaten American lives,” President Donald Trump said. The move comes a week after the US charged Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and other senior officials in the country with “narco-terrorism”. It accused them of flooding the US with cocaine and using drugs as a weapon to undermine the health of Americans. A $15m (£12.5m) reward was offered for information leading to Mr Maduro’s arrest. The Venezuelan government called the US deployment a “diversion” from the current pandemic spreading around the US – and the world at large.

A petition was filed with the Tel Aviv regional court by the Herzliya Association requesting that the government of Israel bring political and legal pressure against China for acting irresponsibly and endangering the public’s health regarding the outbreak of the coronavirus. The class-action suit filed by lawyers Dr. Shmuel Saadia and Amit Hempel is suing for NIS 100 billion. Israel is not alone in the claimants lining up to sue China. Last week, attorney Robert Eglet announced that he would be filing a lawsuit with the U.S. District Court in Nevada on behalf of five Law Vegas businesses for lost income and profits. The class-action suit purports to represent  32 million businesses as potential claimants.

   Alert Level 2 raised over Piton de la Fournaise volcano as second eruption of the year starts, Reunion

The OVPF has recorded 92 volcano-tectonic earthquakes at the Piton de la Fournaise volcano on April 2, 2020, from 04:15 to 04:51 UTC (08:15 to 08:51 UTC). Following the seismic crisis in the morning and a four-hour lull, another volcanic tremor was at 08:20 UTC (12:20 LT). The prefect of the Reunion Islands decided to implement Alert level 2 before visual confirmation of an eruption. Soon after, an overflight carried out by SAG and the PGHM confirmed the opening of cracks on the eastern flank of the volcano, about 1.7 km (1 mile) from the summit. According to the volcano observatory, the origin of the tremor is on the eastern flank, inside the enclosure. The tremors were associated with rapid deformation, which indicates that magma has left the surface magmatic reservoir and has spread to the surface. Up to 92 tremors occurred early in the morning from 04:15 to 04:51 UTC (08:15 to 08:51 LT), followed by another tremor at 08:20 UTC (12:20 LT). The Prefect of the Reunion Islands has implemented Alert Level 2-2 at 09:00 UTC (13:00 LT) — eruption is in progress.
