Israel accused of striking Syrian site, air defenses kill 4 civilians – reports

Syrian media: Israel jets strike targets around Damascus and Homs

Four Syrian civilians were killed after regime air defenses responded to an alleged Israeli airstrike targeting sites in the Qalamoun Mountains near the capital of Damascus. According to Halab Today news, the four were killed when regime missiles fell on residential areas in the town of Qara. Hezbollah affiliated al-Manar reported another three people were injured. The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) fired over ten anti-aircraft missiles towards Israeli jets who struck targets belonging to Iranian-backed militias overnight on Thursday. Quoting a military source,  Syrian state news agency SANA said that Israel launched airstrikes from the southeast of Lebanon’s capital Beirut “targeting some posts in the surroundings of Damascus and Homs.” The statement added that Syrian air defenses “confronted the aggression missiles and shot down most of them, and the outcomes of the aggression are being verified.” An incoming rocket siren alert was activated in an open area after one of the Syrian missiles exploded in the air over the Dead Sea. Shrapnel reportedly fell inside Jordan. Israel declines to comment on foreign reports.

The unholy alliance of Hezb’allah and the Taliban
Whether in Lebanon, where Hezb’allah operates, or in Afghanistan, where the Taliban is brutally regaining territory, they have the same operating methods and the same devastating plans for the world. Taliban spokesman Suhail Shaheen urged the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to release funds frozen following the jihadist group’s ouster of the government of Afghanistan in an interview with the Chinese government broadcaster CGTN on Friday. Shaheen also emphasized foreign investment in Afghanistan would be critical to the success of any Taliban government. Shaheen, as well as most of the Taliban’s top media representatives, have repeatedly urged the world to invest in a Taliban-led Afghanistan, particularly courting the Chinese Communist Party but going so far as to suggest that the radical Islamist organization would be happy to allow American corporations to participate in the Afghan economy. “We need the reconstruction of Afghanistan, the people of Afghanistan need the budget. The [central bank] shall need the budget,” Shaheen told CGTN on Friday.

A New Northern Alliance Against The Taliban Is Forming In Afghanistan’s Panjshir Valley

While the Taliban now controls virtually all of Afghanistan, including the country’s capital, Kabul, one region, the Panjshir Valley, remains outside of the group’s tightening grip. Now, a resistance movement is forming there, led by, among others, Amrullah Saleh, who had been First Vice President of Afghanistan until the collapse of the internationally-recognized government this past weekend, and now claims to be the legitimate leader of the country. A picture had emerged on Monday that reportedly showed an individual holding the Northern Alliance’s green-white-and-black flag in the Panjshir. Saleh and the rest of the leadership of what are some are now referring to as the Panjshiri Resistance are trying to rally forces to their cause there, including former Afghan government security forces who have evaded the Taliban.

Hurricane “Grace” is strengthening on its way toward mainland Mexico. A Hurricane Warning is in effect for the coast of mainland Mexico from north of Cabo Rojo to Barra del Tordo. Landfall is expected within the warning area this evening or tonight, August 21, 2021 — preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to competition. Dangerous storm surge is expected to raise water levels by as much as 1.2 – 1.8 m (4 to 6 feet) above normal tide levels. Heavy rainfall is forecast over Veracruz, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Hidalgo, northern Queretaro, and eastern San Luis Potosi, resulting in areas of flash and urban flooding as well as landslides. Grace is could become a 160 km/h (100 mph) hurricane within 12h — Category 2. Rapid weakening is expected as it moves over the mountains of central Mexico. Its remnants will likely move into the eastern Pacific and lead to the development of a new tropical cyclone later this weekend or early next week. At 15:00 UTC on August 20, the center of Grace was located about 325 km (200 miles) E of Tuxpan and 250 km (155 miles) NE of Veracruz, Mexico, according to the NHC. The system had maximum sustained winds of 140 km/h (85 mph) and was moving W at 22 km/h (14 mph). Its minimum central pressure was 982 hPa. This general motion at a slightly slower forward speed is expected during the next day or so. On the forecast track, Grace is forecast to move across the southwestern Gulf of Mexico this afternoon, and make landfall along the coast of mainland Mexico within the hurricane warning area this evening or tonight.

Gaza terror group fires rocket at Israel, first since May operation

Hamas escalates fight along the border

Gaza-based terrorists launched a rocket at southern Israel on Monday in mid-day, setting off alarms at several Israeli towns and cities surrounding the Strip. An Iron Dome defense system intercepted the rocket above the city of Sderot. The incident followed threats made in recent weeks by Palestinian terror groups in Gaza over the issue of delayed Qatari funds and the reconstruction of Gaza following Operation Guardian of the Walls in May. This rocket attack is the first to take place since the end of the operation, though terrorists have launched arson attacks at Israel’s south regularly. The Islamic Jihad later took responsibility for the attack, stating that it was a response to Israel’s “crimes in Jenin,” an incident on Sunday night in which IDF forces arrested a terrorist and killed another four in a gun battle in the city. This attack occurred as the factions in the Gaza Strip are set to meet on Monday night to decide on their response following what they call “Israel’s evasion of the agreements that led to the end of Operation Guardian of the Walls.”

Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani has left the capital Kabul for Tajikistan, a senior Afghan Interior Ministry official said on Sunday. When asked for comment, the president’s office said it “cannot say anything about Ashraf Ghani’s movement for security reasons”. A representative of the Taliban, which entered the capital Kabul earlier on Sunday, said the group was checking on Ghani’s whereabouts. Ghani will relinquish power in the coming hours as Taliban invaded Kabul on Sunday, and a new Taliban-led government will be formed in the coming hours, according to Al Arabiya. Taliban’s Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar is preparing to arrive in Afghanistan, according to an official in Doha. Earlier, acting Interior Minister Abdul Sattar Mirzakwal said in a televised address that a peaceful transition would take place but no details have as yet been confirmed. Ali Ahmad Jalali, a US-based academic and former Afghan interior minister, is likely to be named to head an interim administration in Kabul, three diplomatic sources said on Sunday as Taliban fighters gathered around the city.

Exploiting U.S. Withdrawal From Afghanistan, Islamic State-Taliban Fight To Establish Islamic Caliphate To Intensify

As the withdrawal of U.S. and coalition troops from Afghanistan is already in its final stages as per the February 29, 2020 agreement between the United States and the Afghan Taliban, signed in the Qatari capital of Doha, the Islamic State (ISIS) has begun to carry out increasingly diverse attacks via its Afghan affiliate, the Islamic State Khurasan Province (ISKP), in an attempt to expand its influence in the country. The surge in ISKP’s attacks on various critical targets, including infrastructure and ethnic and religious minorities, is an attempt to compete with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, known as the Afghan Taliban, as both jihadi groups seek to immediately exploit the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Acting quickly after being emboldened by the U.S. withdrawal, the Taliban began consolidating its grip on power, making rapid advances by controlling key border crossings in the north and west and a growing number of districts across the country. As a result, the Taliban-ISKP fight is likely to intensify, as both groups seek to exploit the September 11 deadline set by President Joe Biden for withdrawal from Afghanistan after 20 years, clashing militarily and ideologically over which group seeks to establish the genuine Islamic state and implement Allah’s shari’a.

USDA to permanently boost food stamp benefits by 25 percent

The Biden administration has approved a significant and permanent increase in the levels of food stamp assistance available to needy families—the largest single increase in the program’s history. Starting in October, average benefits for food stamps (officially known as the SNAP program) will rise more than 25 percent above pre-pandemic levels. The increased assistance will be available indefinitely to all 42 million SNAP beneficiaries. The aid boost was first reported by The New York Times and the details were confirmed by a spokeswoman for the Department of Agriculture. They will be formally announced Monday by Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack. The aid boost is being packaged as a major revision of the USDA’s Thrifty Food Plan. In concrete terms, the average monthly per-person benefits will rise from $121 to $157.

DHS Bulletin Says Opposition To COVID Mandates Is Potential “Domestic Terrorism Threat”

On Friday the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued an almost unbelievable new “terrorism” alert contained in a so-called ‘awareness bulletin’. While focused heavily on the threat posed by “false narratives and conspiracy theories about the 2020 election” – clearly making connections to Jan.6, the bulletin pivoted to unprecedented territory. The document was the result of a DHS meeting held with top officials and high ranking intelligence officers across multiple agencies from departments in New York, Washington, and Las Vegas, NBC News reported. The threat bulletin describes that extremists “may seek to exploit the emergence of COVID-19 variants by viewing the potential re-establishment of public health restrictions across the United States as a rationale to conduct attacks.” This is the first time to our knowledge that “terrorism” is linked to the movement among large groups of skeptical Americans to push back against local, state and federal efforts to impose drastic mask, vaccine, and so-called ‘COVID passport’ mandates. Interestingly the DHS document is heavily focused on such “extremism” initially manifest online in social media and chat forum groups. Meanwhile, mandating vaccines for interstate travel was actually discussed at the White House within the Biden administration.

A powerful magnitude 7.2 earthquake struck southwestern Haiti on Saturday, killing at least 304 people and injuring at least 1,800 others as buildings tumbled into rubble. Prime Minister Ariel Henry said he was rushing aid to areas where towns were destroyed and hospitals overwhelmed with incoming patients. The epicenter of the quake was about 125 kilometers (78 miles) west of the capital of Port-au-Prince, the U.S. Geological Survey said, and widespread damage was reported in the hemisphere’s poorest nations as a tropical storm also bore down. Haiti’s civil protection agency said on Twitter that the death toll stood at 304, most in the country’s south. Rescue workers and bystanders were able to pull many people to safety from the rubble. The agency said injured people were still being delivered to hospitals.

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2021 PA17 flew past Earth at a distance of 0.17 LD / 0.00045 AU (67 320 km / 41 830 miles) from the center of our planet at 14:11 UTC on August 14, 2021. This is the 75th known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and 4th so far this month. The object was first observed at ATLAS-HKO, Haleakala, Hawaii on August 15, one day after it made its close approach. 2021 PA17 belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 7 and 16 m (23 – 52 feet). It flew past us at a speed (relative to the Earth) of 17.43 km/s.

Intense Heat

“And there shall be signs in the sun” (Luke 21:25a).  “The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire.  They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him…Men gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done” (Revelation 16:8-11). Matthew 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

When you read Matthew chapter 24 you will see Jesus warned about the birth pains that would happen in the last days.  We are in the midst  of those birth pains now and the heat and fires we see are part of those birth pains. When you read Matthew 24:7 we see famines. What causes famines?  Many things but two of the major elements to famines are lack of water and heat that scorches the earth.Aug. 13, 2021 –

Intense and long-lasting heatwave expected over Europe

‘Leave now!’ a California town is told as the Dixie Fire shows no signs of slowing down.

Portions of a small Northern California town were engulfed by the Dixie Fire on Wednesday evening, leaving stretches of the community unrecognizable and covered in rubble.

Greenville, Calif. — with a population of about 800 about 150 miles north of Sacramento — was placed under a mandatory evacuation order on Monday. By Wednesday night, amid worsening weather conditions, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office had underscored the warning: “If you are still in the Greenville area, you are in imminent danger and you must leave now!!” county officials said on Facebook. “If you remain, emergency responders may not be able to assist you.”

Before you read chapter 9 of the book of Revelation I want to show you that the bible shows us who is locked away in the Earth until Jesus is ready to release them to fulfill prophecy.

We know who is locked up and we know when those that are locked up will be released to carry out the words of Jesus found in Revelation chapter 9.

² And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

Pay close attention to verse 4-11 because it is here the Christians will know they have to be gone from the Earth before this next event takes place.

⁴ And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.

⁵ And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

¹⁹ For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

²⁰ And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:

²¹ Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

In the book of Revelation, there are very real creatures lurking in an abyss. At the appointed time, they will be released to terrorize and kill unbelievers around the world. 

We are introduced to some of these creatures in Revelation 9, which describes the first and sixth trumpet judgments—the first and second woes.

1. The Fifth Trumpet (First Woe): Demonic Tormentors (Revelation 9:1-12)

Revelation 9 opens with the blowing of the fifth trumpet—the pronouncement of the first woe—a demonic angel from heaven.

At the sounding of the fifth trumpet, John saw a heavenly “star” that had “fallen to earth” (Revelation 9:1).  As we’ll see, this “star” is not a literal star or meteor as in previous judgments, but it is an intelligent being—an angel—not a literal star in outer space.

I think it’s best to interpret and view this “fallen” angel as demonic—either Satan or another evil angel. Because he is given the “key of the bottomless pit,” is permitted to open the pit. When he does, “smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit” (Revelation 9:2). 

Although this is not the same place as Hades—the temporary destination of the unsaved where there is  weeping, and gnashing of teeth, and agonizing suffering in flames of torment—it is a horrible place like Hades and ultimately the Lake of Fire.

Mingled with the smoke belching from the pit, John saw something truly frightening (Revelation 9:3-6) – locusts. But these aren’t like any locusts John (or anyone) had ever seen before. They are given “power…as the scorpions of the earth have power” (Revelation 9:3), meaning they are able to hurt people in the same way a scorpion’s sting inflicts pain.

Ordered by God or the satanic angel “not to hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree,” the swarm of these demonic locusts was only to hurt “the men [and women] who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads” for five months (Revelation 9:4-5). It will become so terrible people “will seek death,” but “will not find it; they will long to die,” but “death flees from them” (Revelation 9:6).  We know at this point the Christians had to be raptured away from Earth. God’s wrath does not fall on those who believed in Him. Look at what 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 says, “⁹ For God hath not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ¹⁰ Who died for us, that, whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with him.”  Notice that God spares only those who have God’s seal on their foreheads.  So who are the ones with God’s seal?  Are they all the Christians? No! In Revelation Chapter 7 we are told exactly who the people are which have the seal of God. They are 144,000 men from the 12 tribes of Israel. In Revelation chapter 14 were are given more information about these 144,000.³ And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth.⁴ These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb.⁵ And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God.” 

So, we know these there are only 144,000 virgins men from Israel who are still on the Earth with the seal of God on their foreheads. Since Christians were not appoint to God’s wrath they had to be taken out of the way. These 144,000 men are left behind to preach Jesus during the reign of the Antichrist.  God is not going to keep all the Christians of the Earth to be stung by one of these demon locust to suffer for 5 months. The pain will be so bad people will try to kill themselves but death will not come. If anyone tells you that the Christians will be on Earth for the entire tribulation ask them to show you anywhere else in the bible where God has sealed all the Christians on their foreheads from this demon locust attack.  There is no other place in the word of God that seals more than the 144,000 men.  If you are a Christian, when this locust attack takes place you will be in heaven not on Earth! If your not a Christian you will be left behind and you will be stung and suffer for 5 months just as Jesus has warned you.  

As I stated these locusts are demonic and march in battle array under the order of their king. Regular locusts are not smart and can’t take orders. Try giving orders to a regular swarm of locusts and see if they listen to you?  I know I am stressing my point a little but I want to show you these are not regular locusts.  For sure, these are locusts you do not want to be around when they are released. Keep in mind, if you did not receive Jesus as Lord you will face these locusts!

2. The Sixth Trumpet (Second Woe): A Demonic Army   (Revelation 9:13-19)

With the sounding of the sixth trumpet—the second woe—a voice commanded the sixth angel to set the judgment in motion—“Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates” (Revelation 9:14).

For however long these four demonic angels have been in chains, they have been kept ready for this specific purpose. At the appropriate time during the great tribulation they will be released because they have “been prepared for the hour and the day and month and year” to fulfill God’s purpose for them (Revelation 9:15).

Nothing really needs to be said concerning Rev. 9:15 other than Jesus has a set date to fulfill verse 15!

In Revelation 9:5 we saw those locust were not able to kill anyone but only make them suffer for 5 months. the release of these four demonic angels are to “kill a third of mankind” (Revelation 9:15), namely unbelieving earth-dwellers (Revelation 8:13).  As you can see from Rev. 9:5 to Rev. 9:15 things in the tribulation have definitely worse.  When this part of the tribulation take place the result will be the extinction of half of the world’s population that had been alive at the beginning of the tribulation. Question for you. Do you still want to deny Jesus as your Lord?  God I hope not!!!

These four demons will accomplish their deadly mission through the means of an army 200 million strong (Revelation 9:16-19). It could be these are humans under the influence of the four demon commanders, but more likely this army is made up other evil angels, making the number of 200 million even more literal. Like the demonic locusts, the description of the horses argues for a demonic cavalry. According to Revelation 9:17 these demonic horsemen are split into three divisions, identified by the color of their breastplates, which cover both rider and steed: red (“fire”), blue (“hyacinth”), and yellow (“brimstone”).

Normal horses don’t breathe “fire and smoke and brimstone” (9:17)—the same colors as their breastplates—but that doesn’t mean these demonic horses are unable to do so. What is to be taken literally is the result of this sixth trumpet: “A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone, which proceeded out of [the horses’] mouths” (Revelation 9:18). Now on the other hand could it be John saw modern day warfare tanks that when they shoot the fire comes out that John called fire and smoke and brimstone?  You will find out if your on Earth when this part of the wrath takes place. 

You would think by this time during the tribulation the people left on Earth would give in to Jesus and bow to Him but the word of God shows us that is not the case. Look at Rev. 9:20-21²⁰ And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:²¹ Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.

What you read here today is only a small part of the wrath that is to be pouring down on the people who have rejected Jesus work on the cross.  Isn’t it time to give your life over to Jesus now before the Revelation begins?   Please, for your own eternal life ask Jesus into your life today.

In these last days Satan is going everything he can to influence people. What does the word say about him?

Intense Heat

“And there shall be signs in the sun” (Luke 21:25a).  “The fourth angel poured out his bowl on the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire.  They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and glorify him…Men gnawed their tongues in agony and cursed the God of heaven because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of what they had done” (Revelation 16:8-11). Matthew 24:7 For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places.

When you read Matthew chapter 24 you will see Jesus warned about the birth pains that would happen in the last days.  We are in the midst  of those birth pains now and the heat and fires we see are part of those birth pains. When you read Matthew 24:7 we see famines. What causes famines?  Many things but two of the major elements to famines are lack of water and heat that scorches the earth.Aug. 13, 2021 –

Intense and long-lasting heatwave expected over Europe

‘Leave now!’ a California town is told as the Dixie Fire shows no signs of slowing down.

Portions of a small Northern California town were engulfed by the Dixie Fire on Wednesday evening, leaving stretches of the community unrecognizable and covered in rubble.

Greenville, Calif. — with a population of about 800 about 150 miles north of Sacramento — was placed under a mandatory evacuation order on Monday. By Wednesday night, amid worsening weather conditions, the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office had underscored the warning: “If you are still in the Greenville area, you are in imminent danger and you must leave now!!” county officials said on Facebook. “If you remain, emergency responders may not be able to assist you.”

Hezbollah claims responsibility for rockets towards Israel from Lebanon

Bennett: Lebanon responsible for all rocket fire from its territory

A heavy barrage of close to 20 rockets was fired from Lebanon into northern Israel on Friday, activating the Iron Dome and setting off sirens throughout the area. Hezbollah claimed responsibility for the rocket attacks, saying that “at 11:15 a.m. the Islamic Resistance responded to the Israeli aggression by targeting the vicinity of Israeli enemy posts in Shebaa Farms with dozens of rockets fired from woodlands that are far from residential areas.” It was the sixth such attack in recent months, and the first that Hezbollah admitted being being behind. Prime Minister Naftali Bennett said Sunday that Israel views the Lebanese government responsible for rocket fire launched from its territory, whether the Hezbollah terror group fired the weapons or not. “The country of Lebanon and the army of Lebanon have to take responsibility for what happens in its backyard,” Bennett told the weekly cabinet meeting, days after two waves of rocket strikes from Lebanon hit open areas in the north.

Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah said on Saturday that Thursday’s events – Israel’s strikes in Lebanon following a barrage of rockets fired by the Iran-backed group from southern Lebanon into Israel – is a dangerous development, the likes of which have not been seen since the last war between the two sides. “We are willing to sustain damage now, and not allow Israel room to maneuver in Lebanon,” Nasrallah said in a televised address. “Yesterday’s message was clear: Despite the hardships in Lebanon, we will not hesitate to respond.” Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Maronite Patriarch Bechara Boutros al-Rahi called on Sunday for the Lebanese army to take control of the southern part of the country, Hezbollah’s stronghold, and strictly implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, after recent clashes between Israel and Hezbollah. “We call upon the Lebanese army, which is responsible with the international forces for the security of the south, to take control of the entire lands of the south, to strictly implement Resolution 1701, and to prevent the launching of missiles from Lebanese territory, not for the sake of Israel’s safety, but rather for the safety of Lebanon,” said al-Rahi during Sunday Mass, according to Lebanon’s National News Agency (NNA). The Maronite patriarch stressed that he could not “accept, by virtue of equality before the law, that a party decides peace and war outside the decision of legality and the national decision entrusted to two-thirds of the members of the government.”

On his first day in office as president of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi received several Palestinian terrorist group leaders and pledged his allegiance to their cause, the official Fars agency reported. “Palestine has been and always will be the number one issue of the Muslim world,” Raisi told Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. “We’ve never had and will never have any doubt about this policy.” The Iranian president gave similar assurances to Palestinian Islamic Jihad secretary Ziad Nakhalkeh and Popular Front leader Talal Naji. All three attended the new Iranian president’s swearing in on Thursday. Meanwhile, the P5+1 nations (the US, UK, France, Russia, China and Germany) were trying to restore the JCPOA deal before Raisi took office last week. Raisi has already announced that he would not meet with Biden and that advancing Iran’s missile program was “not negotiable”. Although it is Iran’s Supreme Guide Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who makes all final decisions, the US, to its credit, seems to have concluded that no deal just now would be better than “any” deal.

Another provincial capital, the second in two days, all but fell on Saturday in Afghanistan, officials said, this one in the country’s north, where a Taliban offensive has surrounded several cities since international forces began withdrawing in May. The capital, Sheberghan, in Jowzjan Province, collapsed less than 24 hours after a provincial capital in southwestern Afghanistan was also taken over by the Taliban.“The whole city has collapsed,” said Abdul Qader Malia, the deputy governor of Jowzjan. “Nothing is left.” On Saturday afternoon, government troops still controlled the airport and the army headquarters outside Sheberghan. Much of the province, though, which borders Turkmenistan, is now under Taliban control. The Taliban victories — and Afghan government defeats — come despite continued American air support and are the result of an insurgent strategy that has overstretched and exhausted Afghan government forces. Sheberghan’s fall comes after the Taliban have seized — often without firing a shot — about 200 of Afghanistan’s 400-odd districts in recent months. They have been pushing deep into the country’s north despite the region’s reputation for being an anti-Taliban stronghold and relatively secure.

Sudan recalls ambassador from Ethiopia as tensions rise

Sudan has recalled its ambassador to neighboring Ethiopia, the foreign ministry said Sunday, reporting Addis Ababa had spurned its efforts at trying to broker a cease-fire in war-torn Tigray. Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok, chair of the regional body IGAD, wanted “to encourage all Ethiopian sides to reach a cease-fire agreement, and engage in comprehensive political talks,” the ministry said in a statement. But last week Ethiopia said their trust in some of Sudan’s leaders had been “eroded,” and accused the Sudanese army of launching an “incursion” into their territory. Northern Ethiopia has been wracked by fighting since last November, when Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sent troops to topple the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF), the region’s then ruling party.

Videos from Portland showed a crowd of demonstrators violently shut down an event where Christians gathered to pray on the waterfront – before another clash Saturday afternoon involved Antifascists and alleged Proud Boys members throwing projectiles at each other on a city street. Police officers did not intervene in either confrontation – besides a squad car sounding its siren just feet away. The first instance of violence happened Saturday at an open-air event planned at Tom McCall Waterfront Park near the Battleship Oregon Memorial to be hosted by Artur Pawlowski, a traveling preacher who’s been arrested in Canada for holding in-person worship services in violation of coronavirus restrictions. Several Antifa Twitter accounts tweeted about the planned event, the Post Millennial reported, and videos posted online showed that a crowd of demonstrators dressed in black bloc attire showed up at the waterfront to confront worshippers.

Greece wildfires spread, causing mass evacuations

Thousands of tourists and residents have been evacuated from towns north of the Greek capital, Athens, as wildfires spread across the country. Strong winds and high temperatures are making it difficult to control the blazes, which have killed at least two people, including a firefighter. Huge clouds of smoke and ash near Athens has meant some people there have also been urged to leave their homes. More than 150 fires have been reported. Six areas have been put on high alert. Meanwhile, Northern California’s Dixie Fire catapulted past Oregon’s Bootleg Fire on Friday to become the largest wildfire burning in the United States and the third-largest in California history. By mid-morning Saturday, the blaze, which began three weeks ago, had scorched 446,723 acres and was only 21% contained.  Although it is the largest current wildfire raging, the Dixie Fire remains one of 100 active, large fires burning in 14 – primarily western – U.S. states. According to the Los Angeles Times, the Dixie Fire now encompasses more than 679 square miles, an area “considerably larger than the city of Los Angeles.”

A massive heat dome over the Mediterranean Sea is set to bring another long-lasting, intense heatwave across parts of southern Europe this week. High temperatures are expected to spread into central Europe and continue through August 22. Southern Italy, especially Sicily, Malta, and parts of the western Balkan Peninsula are already feeling the effects today. The heat will spread into Corsica and central Italy on August 10 and further into the Balkan Peninsula and almost entire Greece. August 11 will see temperatures spreading further east and north, into Spain and France, and Switzerland and Austria on August 12. Central European countries will see the worst temperatures around August 16, lasting through August 21. Meanwhile, meteorologists say a building hot and humid pattern for much of the northeastern and midwestern United States could bring the longest heat wave of the summer to a number of locations.  With the potential for heat to last three to seven days in most cases, some locations are likely not only to add a heat wave to their tally for the season but also to extend their longest stretch of 90-degree days.
