Equatorial Guinea to relocate embassy to Jerusalem

Equatorial Guinea plans to relocate its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the first such pledge of its kind under the new administration of US President Joe Biden. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke about the matter with Equatorial Guinea’s President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo on Friday, after which his office put out an announcement on the matter. Netanyahu said he welcomed this trend in which countries relocate their embassies to Jerusalem, but he noted in particular that this pledge was part of Israel’s growing ties with Africa. Israel is returning to Africa and Africa and Africa is returning to Israel, Netanyahu told Mbasogo. The President said that the whole of Africa welcomed Israel with open arms. To date the only two countries with embassies in Jerusalem are the United States and Guatemala. Until 2018, all embassies were located in the Tel Aviv area as a sign of the International community’s rejection of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

Israel: US paving path to Iranian nuclear bomb with push to rejoin JCPOA

Biden withdraws Trump’s restoration of UN sanctions on Iran

Israel warned that the United States was helping Iran develop a nuclear weapons arsenal with its decision late Thursday night to push to rejoin the 2015 Iran deal. “Israel remains committed to preventing Iran from getting nuclear weapons and its position on the nuclear agreement has not changed,” the Prime Minister’s Office said. “Israel believes that going back to the old agreement will pave Iran’s path to a nuclear arsenal. Israel is in close contact with the United States on this matter,” it added. From the onset, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had opposed the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, known as the Iran deal, that was agreed upon between Tehran and the six-world power: the US, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, Russia and China. US President Joe Biden’s administration has now formally declared its intent to seek a return to that deal and is willing to hold talks with Iran about rejoining the deal. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said that US sanctions must be rescinded before it would consider coming back into compliance with the deal. Tehran has set a February 23 deadline for Washington to begin reversing sanctions, otherwise, it says, it will take its biggest step yet to breach the deal – banning short-notice inspections by the UN nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

The Syrian Arab Army Between The Hammer And The Anvil

The resurgence of ISIS has become fact. There can be no denying it or acting as if it’s still an impending event. Terrorist activities are becoming bolder, as evidenced by ISIS cells ambushing another Syrian Arab Army (SAA) unit in the Homs countryside. According to the terrorist group’s own information agency, five SAA soldiers were killed in the attack. Just days earlier, ISIS attacked three phosphate mine posts, which were being defended by Iranian-backed forces, to the east of the town of Khunayfis in southern Homs. ISIS has ramped up the intensity and frequency of its attacks in central Syria. They are attempting to spread their influence back into the areas of their former self-proclaimed Caliphate. So far, the terrorists haven’t been able to push all that far towards the Hama-Aleppo-Raqqa triangle and western Deir Ezzor. This could just be a matter of time, however, since they now appear both revitalized and re-equipped. The SAA and its Russian support are attempting to contain them, so far with relative success. ISIS is pushing towards the province of Raqqa, and ultimately the city of Raqqa, both of which are currently under the control of the SDF, while Turkish proxies operate in the surrounding area. They are also targetting the SAA and sometimes Russia’s forces.

US-led Int’l Coalition to Establish New Military Base at Iraq-Syria-Turkey Triangle

US military convoy enters northeast Syria: report

The US-led Coalition plans to establish a new military base at the Iraq-Syria-Turkey triangle in the Ain Dewar area in Hasakah countryside. According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a military convoy of over 50 vehicles and trucks affiliated to the International Coalition were seen crossing into north-eastern Syria from the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. “Trucks, carrying armored vehicles, weapons, military, and logistical equipment, entered via Al-Walid border crossing with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, heading towards Al-Qamishli area,” the Observatory reported. “This is the 11th Coalition convoy to enter Syria since the beginning of 2021,” it added. On February 8, SOHR activists reported seeing a new International Coalition convoy, consisting of 45 military vehicles and trucks, entering Syrian territory via Al-Walid border crossing with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. The convoy included military and logistical equipment. It headed to al-Qamishli and then to the bases of the International Coalition in the countryside of Hasakah and Deir Ezzor. In the same context, SOHR activists reported seeing on February 6 another convoy entering Syrian territory via Al-Walid border crossing with the Kurdistan Region of Iraq. It consisted of 50 military vehicles and trucks, including military and logistical equipment. The convoy headed to the bases of the International Coalition in the countryside of Hasakah.

Iran to Install Advanced Nuclear Centrifuges

Iran is playing with fire, Germany warns

Iran: The Mullah’s Pursuit of Obtaining Nuclear Weapons

Iran has informed the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) of its intent to install two more cascades of advanced IR-2m centrifuges in a move that will further enhance the quantity of the uranium it can produce, the agency said in a recent report. “Iran indicated it plans to install two additional cascades of 174 IR-2m centrifuges at FEP to enrich … up to 5% U-235. This will bring the total number of cascades of IR-2m centrifuges either planned, being installed, or operating in FEP to six,” the IAEA said in a report to member states obtained by Reuters on Wednesday. The additional cascades will be installed at the Natanz Fuel Enrichment Plant (FEP) outside Tehran. The facility suffered an explosion last July that Iranian authorities said was likely the result of sabotage. The installation will follow two other cascades already brought on-line this year at Natanz that have increased Iran’s ability to refine uranium-238 into the more useful uranium-235.

Algeria’s president calls for dissolution of parliament, elections

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday called for the dissolution of parliament and early legislative elections as the North African nation struggles with health, political and economic crises. In an address to the nation, Tebboune said he will also carry out a government reshuffle and issued a pardon for dozens of jailed activists of the “Hirak” protest movement. The government has struggled to stem renewed Hirak protests. “I have decided to dissolved the National Popular Assembly and call for elections,” Tebboune said, in a speech broadcast on state television. Tebboune, who has previously expressed dissatisfaction with the cabinet of Prime Minister Abdelaziz Djerad, said the government reshuffle would take place “within 48 hours at most.”
Algeria’s government is facing multiple challenges as the coronavirus pandemic adds to the woes of an oil-dependent economy.

Weekly jobless claims rise to 861,000 vs. 773,000 expected

Last week’s initial jobless claims soared to 861,000, despite more states and cities lifting restrictive business measures amid a decline in the number of coronavirus cases. Economists had predicted around 773,000 first-time claims for the week ended Feb. 13. Data for the previous week was revised up to 848,000 from 793,000. “Total initial claims broke their three-week streak of declining numbers,” said AnnElizabeth Konkel, economist at Indeed Hiring Lab. “The movement of this number is going in the wrong direction, and at 6.7 times higher than the pre-Covid era, magnitude also remains a problem.” The surprise rise in claims comes as recent positive indicators hint at an economy starting to show some green shoots. Manufacturing data showed factory output is almost back to pre-pandemic levels, producer prices increased by the most since 2009 and retail sales for January soaring by 5.3 percent from the previous month, buoyed by consumers spending their stimulus checks.

Russia to present new concept of national digital currency – Central Bank

Mastercard inks partnership for prepaid card linked to The Bahamas’ central bank digital currency

After discussing the launch of the digital ruble with local banks, the country’s financial watchdog says it will present a more detailed concept for the national digital currency by summer. The head of the Central Bank of Russia, Elvira Nabiullina, said on Thursday that the regulator received detailed feedback from the banking community in its October report, in which the regulator introduced the digital ruble as a possible new form of national currency. According to the official, most lenders support a two-level model of the digital ruble, which allows banks to open wallets for their clients on the central bank’s platform and conduct operations. Russia’s central bank initially revealed that it was assessing the possibility of creating a digital form of the Russian national currency in its report published in October 2020. The digital ruble is meant to exist along with cash and non-cash rubles and will allow private and corporate users to freely transfer digital rubles to their electronic wallets and use them on mobile devices.

CA on verge of decriminalizing psychedelics

Norway Seeks To Decriminalise Recreational Drug Use

California could be on the verge of becoming the latest state to decriminalize psychedelics for personal and therapeutic use, building on a growing movement across the country to rethink the so-called war on drugs. The bill, introduced Thursday by state Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat who represents San Francisco, would decriminalize substances such as psilocybin, MDMA, LSD, ketamine, DMT and mescaline. Psilocybin, a hallucinogen found in certain types of mushrooms, and ketamine are already being used in psychedelic-assisted therapy by patients and doctors who extoll the health and wellness benefits of psychedelics to treat mental health disorders, including depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. The bill excludes the use of peyote, an endangered plant, to ensure its availability for traditional Native American spiritual practices, according to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS, a global psychedelic research and education organization. “The war on drugs has been a complete failure,” Wiener said. “It hasn’t stopped people from using drugs and it hasn’t stopped addiction.”

Indonesia capital warns of big fines for refusing COVID-19 vaccine

Cardinal Says Vatican Employees Could Lose Jobs for Refusing COVID-19 Vaccine

US to Pay $200 Mln it Owes to WHO Before March, Secretary of State Blinken Says

Indonesia’s capital Jakarta is threatening residents with fines of up to 5 million rupiah ($356.89) for refusing COVID-19 vaccines, an unusually stiff penalty aimed at ensuring compliance with a new regulation making inoculations mandatory.”If you reject it, there are two things, social aid will not be given, (and a) fine,” Riza told reporters.Indonesia announced a presidential order earlier this month stipulating anyone who refuses vaccines could be denied social assistance or government services or made to pay a fine. The penalty would be determined by regional health agencies or by local governments. Meanwhile, the cardinal who heads the Vatican City State said that employees who refuse to receive the COVID-19 vaccine when deemed necessary for their work could face penalties up to termination of employment. And The United States will send a payment worth over $200 million to WHO by the end of February, Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced Wednesday. “The US believes that multilateralism, the UN, the WHO are essential, not just as an effective international Covid-19 health and humanitarian response, but also to building stronger global health capacity and security for the future,” Blinken said.

At least 2400 cold temperature records broken or tied in the U.S. from February 12 to 16, 2021

Libya sees first snow in 15 years as cold snap hits parts of northern Africa and Middle East

At least 2 400 preliminary daily cold temperature records, including cold maximums and minimums, were broken or tied at longer-term sites (75+ years of data) in the United States from February 12 to 16, 2021. The cold snap peaked from February 14 to 16. Another winter storm will affect a large area from Friday, February 19 — from the Lower Mississippi Valley into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Over just the past week, much of the Lower 48 has been punished with record-breaking cold and unusually heavy snow and ice, NWS Weather Prediction Center said. From the Pacific Northwest across the Rockies and into the Southern Plains and Midwest, the snowfall has been measured in feet. Ice and snow continue to plague Texas and the Northeast. In the NCEI database, approximately 30% of available U.S. sites set cold maximum records, and about 20% set minimum records. Analyzed temperatures were 22 to 28 °C (40 – 50 °F) below average over a large portion of the central and southern Plains. At the peak of the cold, more than 5 million homes were without power, most of them in Texas (4.3+ million). More than 30 people have lost their lives.

Israeli air drill tackled just one dimension of a potential war with Hizballah

In a surprise three-day exercise, the Israeli Air Force demonstrated its ability in a full-scale war to target Hizballah’s entire missile arsenal in one day, while also activating an upgraded missile defense system for the home front. But will the massive war drill, dubbed the Rose of Galilee, that ended on Tuesday, Feb. 16, deter Hizballah from launching its planned limited escalation drive, as predicted by the IDF? And has the astounding strength exhibited in the drill retitled the balance of fear keeping both foes in check? The exercise simulated the downing of an IAF plane by Hizballah anti-aircraft fire over Lebanon. In response, hundreds of Israeli aircraft struck 3,000 Hizballah targets in 24 hours, dwarfing the 4,000 targets hit in all three weeks of the 2006 war with Lebanon. They consisted of Hizballah command centers, corridors and facilities for the transfer of Iranian weapons, arms depots and missile hideouts in Shiite civilian villages. Also postulated by the scenario were possible cruise missile attacks by Hizballah from Syria and rocket and drone attacks from Iraq and Yemen by Iranian proxies. The massive mock IAF offensive demonstrated that the demolition of Hizballah’s war machine would unavoidably entail also the destruction of Lebanon’s strategic utilities, such as water works, the electricity grid, highways and bridges and cause civilian casualties. But Hizballah could no longer then argue that it was waging war with Israel for the sake of defending Lebanon. Hizballah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah’s responded to the massive IAF drill on Tuesday by saying: “Israel’s home front needs to know that if there is a war with Hizballah, it will see things it has not seen since the establishment of Israel,” he said.  “No one can guarantee that a few days of combat between us and Israel won’t lead to a wider war.” He is clearly banking on the precise ballistic missiles Hizballah has received from Iran, of which more than 1,000 have been accumulated, according to intelligence estimates.

Militia Suspected of Iran Ties Takes Credit for Iraqi Kurdistan Bombing, Injury of U.S. Soldier

A volley of rockets targeting an airbase in Iraq’s Kurdistan region on Monday killed a foreign civilian contractor and wounded five others, among them a US soldier, AFP reports. At around 9:30 p.m. local time several loud explosions were heard in the northwestern outskirts of Arbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region, according to the news agency. Iraqi and Western security sources told AFP that at least three rockets were fired in the direction of the city’s airport, where foreign troops are based as part of an international alliance fighting the Islamic State (ISIS) group. Two other rockets hit residential neighborhoods on Arbil’s outskirts. An Iran-backed militant group in Iraq called Saraya Awlia al-Dam, or “Guardians of Blood Brigades,” quickly took credit for Monday’s rocket attack on the Erbil International Airport in the Kurdistan region.

Mass anti-coup protests in Myanmar as UN warns of violence

Thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of Myanmar’s biggest city Wednesday, in one of largest protests yet of a coup, despite warnings from a UN human rights expert that recent troop movements could indicate the military was planning a violent crackdown. In Yangon, protesters marched carrying signs calling for ousted leader Aung San Suu Kyi to be released from detention, while others feigned car trouble, strategically abandoning their vehicles — and leaving the hoods up — to prevent security forces from easily accessing the demonstrations. Large rallies were also held in the country’s second-biggest city, Mandalay and the capital of Naypyitaw, in defiance of an order banning gatherings of five or more people. The demonstrations came a day after UN rapporteur Tom Andrews expressed alarm at reports of soldiers being transported into Yangon, noting that such movements had previously preceded killings, disappearances and mass arrests.

State Dept Refuses to Explain Iran Envoy’s Talks with China

Dept of Defense: “Real Possibility” of Nuclear War with China

The State Department is refusing to provide details or even confirm statements by the Chinese government indicating the U.S.-Iran envoy Robert Malley recently spoke to Communist Party officials about the Biden administration’s efforts to reenter the 2015 nuclear accord. Chinese vice foreign minister Ma Zhaoxu “had a phone conversation with U.S. Special Envoy for Iran Robert Malley at the latter’s request, and the two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on the Iranian nuclear issue,” China’s foreign ministry announced late last week. When asked to confirm the press release and provide further details about Malley’s conversations, the State Department ignored multiple Washington Free Beacon emails before stating on Sunday, “Special Envoy Rob Malley is in the early stages of engaging Members of Congress, allies, partners, and others.” The State Department would not provide any details when pressed to specifically address the talks with China. Normally, the State Department provides reporters with readouts of conversations held by senior U.S. diplomats with their counterparts, particularly if those talks are held at the request of the United States. Malley’s diplomatic talks with China come as the Biden administration is pressing Iran to end its revamped nuclear work, which includes stockpiling highly enriched uranium, the primary fuel for a nuclear weapon. China is still party to the 2015 accord and has a vested interest in seeing the United States rejoin the agreement. It is a primary ally of the Iranian regime and has supported the rollback of a United Nations arms ban on Tehran, which would permit the Communist Party and nations like Russia to sell Iran billions in advanced arms.

Kraft Heinz, Conagra may raise some product prices as grains, edible oil costs surge

Kraft Heinz Co and Conagra Brands Inc said they may choose to raise prices this year on some products that use wheat, sugar and other commodities that are becoming increasingly expensive due to high demand. Conagra CEO Sean Connolly said the company, which makes Duncan Hines cake mixes and Marie Callender’s pulled pork mac and cheese bowls, will need to implement inflation-justified price increases this year so it can also continue to fuel sales growth through innovation. Ingredient and packaging costs represent 60% to 65% of Conagra’s total cost basket, Finance Chief Dave Marberger said on the sidelines of the Consumer Analyst Group of New York virtual conference. With people on lockdown cooking more at home – and still stockpiling in some parts of the world – prices for commodities like sugar, wheat and soy are surging, forcing food companies to absorb higher costs. U.S. consumers on average paid 3.7% more for food consumed at home in January than they did a year earlier, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index. Year-over-year increases in food prices have topped 3.5% each month since last April, the longest such stretch in nearly a decade.

Widespread disruption after heaviest snowfall in 12 years hits Greece

Severe snowstorm hits northern Japan, JMA warns it could become the strongest in years

Rare snow storm hits Israel

Heavy snowfall has caused widespread disruption in many parts of Greece, including the capital — Athens, on Monday, February 15, 2021, resulting in delayed transport, power outages, and suspended services. According to the National Meteorological Service, this was the country’s ‘fiercest’ snowfall in terms of intensity and volume in 12 years. The snow, which is common in the north but rare in the capital, put many services across the country to a standstill. Most public transport services were delayed, while toppled trees caused power outages in several mountainside suburbs. Parts of the nation’s main highway were closed, most ferry services to the islands were canceled, and flights from regional airports disrupted. The fire service said they received more than 600 calls for assistance in greater Athens alone. Theodoros Kolydas, head of the meteorological service, said this was the fiercest snowfall, in terms of intensity and volume, in 12 years.

Houthis step up attacks after removal from ‘terror’ list

On February 5, the Houthi leadership in the mountains of Yemen read welcome news from Washington that they would soon be removed from a list of foreign terrorist organizations. They had just been put on the list by the Trump administration. Because of their designation as “terrorists,” it made it difficult to deliver humanitarian aid through areas they control, so the US wanted to make them not terrorists. For the Houthi leadership and their Iranian backers, this meant a new round of attacks and that a military offensive would be planned. The 10 days since the announced removal have seen almost daily Houthi drone attacks on Saudi Arabia and increased fighting in Yemen. It comes as the US has also said although it supports Riyadh’s right to self-defense, it will no longer back an offensive war in Yemen. It appears that the Houthis have been unleashing a major drone offensive ever since the US indicated it will delist the group, according to reports from Saudi Arabia and the region. On February 7, reports indicated that Riyadh intercepted four Houthi drones. On February 8, US Central Command said it would continue to support Riyadh defending itself. On February 9, more drones were intercepted by Saudi Arabia. On February 10, the Houthis said they targeted Abha Airport in southern Saudi Arabia, near Yemen. On February 11, another interception of a Houthi attack was reported. On February 12, in the wake of the US finally taking them off the list, more reports of attacks on Abha and King Khalid Air Base in Saudi Arabia were reported. “The attack by an explosive-laden drone was the fourth such incident involving the Iran-backed Houthis in southern Saudi Arabia in as many days,” a local media outlet reported.

Syria claims Israel attacked near Damascus

Mysterious Weapon Knocked Out Syrian Army Battle Tank In Southern Idlib

On February 12, a mysterious weapon knocked out a battle tank of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in the southern Idlib countryside. The battle tank blew up in the early morning hours after being hit with an unknown object. The battle tank was situated south of the government-held town of Ma`arat al-Nu`man, way behind the frontline. The strike represents a serious escalation by Turkey and a violation of the agreement signed with Russian on March 5, 2020. Ankara forces engaged in a fierce confrontation with the SAA and its allies last year to stop them from neutralizing the remaining terrorist groups in Greater Idlib. Meanwhile, Syrian air defense intercepted “Israeli aggression” over Damascus on Sunday night, Syrian state television reported. The Syrian Ministry of Defense said that shortly after 1:00 a.m., Israel launched missiles from the Golan Heights and the Galilee at several targets in the area of the Syrian capital. According to the ministry, most of the missiles were intercepted. The alleged Israeli attack came hours after an anti-aircraft missile was fired at an Israel Air Force unmanned aerial vehicle.

Turkey insists that α “two-state solution” is now the only way to solve the Cyprus problem, even if it contradicts UN resolutions for a federation model with political equality between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots. The Mediterranean island has remained divided since 1974, when Turkish troops took advantage of a coup orchestrated by the military government of Athens against then-Cyprus President Archbishop Makarios and invaded the island. Turkey has occupied almost 40 percent of Cyprus territory since then, while Turkish Cypriots have declared the independence of the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus,” a state recognized only by Turkey. Turkey wants to keep Cyprus as a “geopolitical hostage” as this serves President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s plans to revive the Ottoman empire and exert maritime dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean. Its position has hardened since the beginning of 2020, following the leadership election in the Turkish Cypriot community of Ersin Tatar, who is seen as entirely dependent on Erdogan. The UN secretary-general is expected to convene.

Iran test fires sophisticated short-range missile

Iran accused of plot to attack UAE embassy in Ethiopia

Iran will scale back its nuclear commitments if 2015 obligations not revived

Iran’s army test fired a sophisticated short-range missile on Sunday, The Associated Press reported, citing the Iranian official IRNA news agency. Sunday’s report comes days after Iran’s Revolutionary Guard began a ground forces drill near the Iraqi border. In a similar drill this past July, the Revolutionary Guard launched missiles targeting a mock aircraft carrier in the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Meanwhile, Iran was behind a recent plot to attack the UAE embassy in Ethiopia, US and Israeli officials have revealed. Iranian intelligence services activated a sleeper cell in Addis Ababa late last year to also gather intelligence on the US and Israel embassies, the officials told the New York Times. The operation was part of a wider move to by Iran to seek out softer targets in Africa for revenge attacks after the killings of Iranian commander Qassem Soleimani by the US and Iran’s main nuclear scientist Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, reportedly by Israel. Ethiopia said earlier this month it had arrested 15 people and seized weapons and explosives as part of the plot against the UAE embassy.

Clashes, blasts intensify across Afghanistan

Dozens hurt as massive blaze erupts on Afghanistan-Iran border

At least four Afghan security force members, including a commander, were killed and seven were critically injured in blasts in eastern and southern provinces on Saturday, officials said, adding that three civilians were injured in the east. No militant group immediately claimed responsibility for the three attacks, which come amid an upsurge in violence in Afghanistan as clashes intensify between government forces and Taliban insurgents. A string of near-daily roadside bombings in recent weeks has killed government officials, judges, journalists and activists. On Saturday, a police spokesman in southern Kandahar province said a blast there was caused by a Humvee packed with explosives that targeted a police outpost, injuring seven police personnel. Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry said “18 Taliban terrorists were killed and 9 others were wounded” in an operation in Arghandab district of Kandahar province on Friday night. An explosion targeted the police commander in the Chapa Dara district of eastern Kunar province, killing four local police personnel, including the commander, said a provincial police spokesman. A roadside bomb blast injured three civilians in Jalalabad, the capital of eastern Nangarhar province. The bloodshed comes as US-brokered peace talks in Qatar between the Taliban and representatives of the Afghan government have staggered in recent months.

Sudan warns Ethiopia against provoking a war that threatens regional stability

Sudan strongly condemned on Sunday “Ethiopian aggression” on its territories and the direct violation of its sovereignty and the safety of the Sudanese lands, state news agency SUNA reported. The Sudanese Foreign Ministry issued a statement describing the aggression on Sudanese territories as “an unacceptable and regretful escalation.” Tensions in the border region has flared since the start of the conflict in Ethiopia’s northern Tigray region in early November and the arrival of more than 50,000 mainly Tigrayan refugees in eastern Sudan. Disputes have been concentrated on agricultural land in Al-Fashqa, which falls within Sudan’s international boundaries but has long been settled by Ethiopian farmers. There have been armed clashes between Sudanese and Ethiopian forces in recent months, with both sides accusing the other of instigating the violence. The two countries held talks in January in Khartoum over the issue.

Violent BLM protest in NYC leaves two NYPD cops injured, 11 arrested

Antifa blocks Seattle police from responding to emergencies with snow barrier

A Black Lives Matter march through Midtown Manhattan turned violent Friday night, with 11 protesters arrested. The NYPD reported that two officers suffered minor injuries during the protest, which was attended by about 100 marchers; officials could not immediately say how the cops were hurt. At least some of those arrested were accused of attacking Daily News photographer Sam Costanza at the intersection of Sixth Avenue and 54th Street in the mistaken belief that he was a cop, sources said. The photog was surrounded and struck after one of the marchers recognized him from a BLM protest outside the NYPD’s 6th Precinct house in Greenwich Village last year, according to sources. The NYPD confirmed the attack, telling The Post “a member of the media” was assaulted, and police made “a number of arrests.”

Myanmar security forces intensify crackdown on protesters

Security forces in Myanmar pointed guns toward anti-coup protesters and attacked them with sticks on Monday, seeking to quell the large-scale demonstrations calling for the military junta that seized power earlier this month to reinstate the elected government. More than 1,000 protesters rallied in front of the Myanmar Economic Bank in Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city, when at least 10 trucks full of soldiers and police arrived and immediately started firing slingshots toward the protesters, according to a photographer who witnessed the events. The soldiers and police then attacked the protesters with sticks, and police could be seen aiming long guns into the air amid sounds that resembled gunfire. Local media reported that rubber bullets were also fired into the crowd, and that a few people were injured. Police were also seen pointing guns toward the protesters. In the capital, Naypyitaw, protesters gathered outside a police station demanding the release of a group of high school students who were detained while joining in anti-coup activities. Protesters continued to gather across Myanmar on Monday, following a night in which authorities cut the country’s internet access and increased the security presence in major cities seeking to curtail demonstrations. On Sunday, ambassadors from the United States and Canada and 12 European nations called on Myanmar’s security forces to refrain from violence against those “protesting the overthrow of their legitimate government.”

“Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten.  Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.” (James 5:1-3)

“They will throw their silver into the streets, And their gold will be like refuse; Their silver and their gold will not be able to deliver them In the day of the wrath of the Lord; They will not satisfy their souls, Nor fill their stomachs, Because it became their stumbling block of iniquity.” (Ezekiel 7:19)

U.K. hit with biggest economic decline in more than 300 years

The United Kingdom is facing its worst recession since The Great Frost of 1709 — back when the American colonies were still British, and Benjamin Franklin was just 3 years old. While the U.S. economy shrank by 3.5% last year, the U.K. economy contracted by nearly 10%, and economists believe it will take longer to recover. In a wealthy part of Central London, near where fashionable boutiques and houses that sell for tens of millions of dollars are located, people receive groceries and meals at a food bank. Many of them said they used to be considered middle class. Dr. Miatta Fahnbulleh, an economist, told CBS News the British government’s slow response to the pandemic, along with Brexit, created a perfect storm of economic pain. “There are families that literally cannot feed their children. I think as we see more images of this, there will be a sense that you know our government are letting people down, and it is unacceptable,” Fahnbulleh said. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund — UNICEF — helped feed British children for the first time in 2020.

U.S. Home Prices Pass 2005’s Peak Level

A Market Crash And High Inflation?

Experts Are Warning That A U.S. Stock Market Crash Is Very Likely In The Months Ahead

U.S. housing prices have finally eclipsed their peak from 2005 in the years leading up to the Great Recession. Note that at the beginning of 2021, we said real estate was entering the year in a “massive bubble”. A combination of low interest rates and trillions in freshly printed dollars has led to the the median price of a single family home rising 14.9% to $315,000 in Q4. It was “the biggest surge in data going back to 1990, according to the National Association of Realtors,” according to Bloomberg. The move was most pronounced in the Northeast, which saw a 21% gain as a result of buyers leaving cities and flocking to the suburbs. Fairfield County, Connecticut led the way, rising 39%. We have written extensively, not just about families moving to the suburbs, but also corporations. Over the past year, we’ve presented a ton of evidence (see: here & here & here) of city dwellers fleeing for the exits, some of which was due to the virus pandemic unleashing a technological wave of remote working, allowing these folks to work anywhere with an internet connection. In addition to new work-from-home rules, low borrowing costs have also helped people along in their decision to relocate. The rise in prices can be a bad omen for those looking to buy. The obvious decision is for people to leave expensive areas like New York and San Francisco in favor of more affordable areas. Surging home prices, as we pointed out in January, mean that young Americans can’t afford to buy, and a record 34% of them now live with their parents.

Governments will eventually defeat cryptocurrencies

ECB official floats idea for limits on digital euro holdings to discourage hoarding

Clear crypto rules urgently needed as major companies embrace asset: SEC official

The Indian government plans to introduce a new piece of legislation that will outlaw Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. India also plans to introduce its own digital currency, thus making crypto uncool. In fact, it would not be a cryptocurrency if a government issues it. It is not only India, governments across the world have started banning them. Since 2009, when Bitcoin was created, some of the brightest tech Bohemians have sold the world a lemon. That a new kind of global currency will end the monopoly of governments and central banks over money. This new currency will not exist in physical form, it will be created from nothing by a vast network of computers as they perform a vast number of computations to randomly create it. The currency will have no intrinsic value beyond the perception that it has value, and its own predetermined scarcity. The lure of a cryptocurrency is that it can make transactions between two individuals secure and possible without inefficient intermediaries like banks and rule-makers like governments. It offers complete anonymity and freedom—two things that governments, including democratic ones, dislike. In fact, governments dislike even their own currency notes, as it provides anonymity and too much freedom. So, why did some people think governments would allow cryptocurrencies to thrive, or even survive? Why would governments permit a system that could end its own relevance ?

Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine to be tested on children

Seven unique variants of coronavirus found across United States

Britain’s University of Oxford said on Saturday it will test the impact of the COVID-19 vaccine it developed with AstraZeneca on children, NBC News reported. The trial will assess the “safety and immune responses” in children and young adults aged between 6 and 17 of the vaccine, the university said in a statement. The trial, which will enroll 300 volunteers, will take place in three English cities, London, Southampton and Bristol, the statement added. The inoculations are expected later in February, it said. “While most children are relatively unaffected by coronavirus and are unlikely to become unwell with the infection, it is important to establish the safety and immune response to the vaccine in children and young people as some children may benefit from vaccination,” said Professor Andrew Pollard, chief investigator on the Oxford vaccine trial. The two-dose Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine is cheaper and easier to distribute than some rivals. In recent weeks, there have been concerns about the vaccine’s effectiveness to global mutations, in particular a variant detected in South Africa. A small clinical trial recently suggested that the Oxford-AstraZeneca isn’t effective in preventing mild to moderate illness from the South African variant. South Africa later suspended the rollout of the vaccine in the country. However, the World Health Organization (WHO) this week recommended the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine for people over the age of 65 “even if variants are present”.

New Ebola Deaths In West Africa Declared “Epidemic Situation”

The West African country of Guinea has confirmed its first Ebola deaths since 2016 as the World Health Organization (WHO) is ramping up to combat the new declared outbreak there. At least three people have died from the deadly disease with another half-dozen people testing positive. On Sunday Guinea’s National Health Security Agency called the new outbreak an “epidemic situation”. Health officials are now scrambling to trace the new outbreak’s origins, while isolating individuals that had contact with the infected. So far they’ve narrowed a possible outbreak center to a funeral that was attended by many. As Reuters describes, “The seven patients fell ill with diarrhea, vomiting and bleeding after attending a burial in Goueke sub-prefecture. Those still alive have been isolated in treatment centers, the health ministry said.” Ebola can kill rapidly and painfully, and is believed spread through bodily fluids. There’s growing alarm and panic given the last outbreak in West Africa was so deadly: The 2013-2016 outbreak of Ebola in West Africa started in Nzerekore, whose proximity to busy borders hampered efforts to contain the virus. It went on to kill at least 11,300 people with the vast majority of cases in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Sporadic cases have appeared in central Africa in recent years, but currently the health systems of Guinea and other regional countries is already under severe strain given the coronavirus pandemic. Guinea has nearly 15,000 COVID-19 cases out of a country of about 12 million, including 84 deaths.

If you think the weather’s been the driest you’ve seen in your life, you’re right

The western United States is in the grip of a once-in-a-lifetime drought that is threatening millions of acres of farmland and rangeland, drying up streams and creeks and forcing people to think about alternative landscaping choices that don’t suck up so much water. The drought information system, which operates under the umbrella of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, updated its website at drought.gov, that provides residents with down to the city information across the country regarding drought and weather trends. The drought monitor maps the entire country for dryness with assessments updated weekly. In fact, the summer of 2020 was the driest ever logged in Utah and Nevada since record keeping began 126 years ago, said Laura Haskell, an engineer with the Utah Division of Water Resource’s planning section. Conditions are dry now — snowpack is in the 60% of normal range across the state — and much of the runoff will be absorbed by the thirsty ground before it ever has a chance to make it into creeks, streams and rivers that feed reservoirs.

Matthew 24: 37 But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. 38 For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, 39 And knew not until the flood came, and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.

Biden Funds Program To Block Foreign Religious Leaders Who Oppose LGBT Agenda

Biden’s executive orders are going to have far-reaching consequences, and the progressives are back in the driver’s seat and in control of the internationalist swamp. The United States, under Democratic presidents, is not so much a “beacon of freedom and democracy” as it is a neo-colonial power, pushing the radical LGBT agenda and abortion on nations it considers less evolved. Obama was famously told to take his views and shove off by various African leaders, and now Biden, despite his advanced age, is primed to push even further. From Austin Ruse at C-Fam: This week, President Biden signed an executive order that will promote homosexuality and transgenderism as a centerpiece of U.S. foreign policy. The document directs “all U.S. government departments and agencies engaged abroad to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and intersex persons around the world.”

Arab Parliament condemns Kosovo’s recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital

The Arab Parliament condemned Kosovo’s decision to move its embassy to Jerusalem, which recognized the disputed holy city as the capital of Israel, Jordan’s state agency Petra reported. The organization urged Kosovo on Tuesday to change their mind about the location of the embassy and to abide by international resolutions on the legal state of the holy city. Israel and Kosovo established diplomatic ties on Monday, with the Muslim-majority territory recognising Jerusalem as the Jewish state’s capital.

State Department: Abraham Accords not ‘substitute’ for Israeli-Palestinian peace

Officials in the Biden administration and the Palestinian Authority held a discussion on Monday in what appears to be the first formal contact between the United States and Palestinians in several years. The Palestinians broke off ties following Trump’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital in December 2017 and relocate the embassy there in May 2018. U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Israeli and Palestinian Affairs Hady Amr spoke with Palestinian Authority Civil Affairs Commission chairman Hussein al-Sheikh on Monday with the two men agreeing to future dialogue. “Bilateral relations were discussed, and the political situation and the latest current developments. It was a constructive conversation and further communications were agreed upon,” tweeted al-Sheikh. State Department spokesman Ned Price confirmed the call in a news conference with reporters on Tuesday, saying that Amr “is making a range of introductory calls with the Government of Israel and Palestinian Authority counterparts as he assumes his new duties.” Amr, who was appointed to the role by U.S. President Joe Biden, previously served as U.S. Deputy Special Envoy for Israeli-Palestinian Negotiations from 2014 to 2017 working with a team under Secretary of State John Kerry that focused on key economic issues.

Israel headed towards 1 million residents living in the West Bank

The latest edition of the “West Bank Jewish Population Stats Report,” commissioned annually by former Member of Knesset and National Union Party head Yaakov “Ketzaleh” Katz, shows a 2.62 percent growth in 2020, and a 17 percent in growth in the past five years, in the number of Jews who live in Judea and Samaria, more commonly known as the West Bank. According to the report, some 475,481 Jews currently call these regions home. The statistics do not take into account the more than 325,000 Jewish residents of Old City Jerusalem or the eastern neighbors of the capital city, who are also viewed as living over the so-called “Green Line,” or 1949 armistice lines, in towns and neighborhoods established since Israel’s victory in the 1967 Six-Day War. Referring to those who believe that Israel must relinquish some land to the Palestinian Authority for “peace” or in order to create an official Arab entity in the West Bank, Katz said that “as long as we are succeeding to bring more Jews to live in Judea, Samaria and to the Golan [Heights], this shows that it will be impossible to cram us together into Tel Aviv and its suburbs. And that is the most important message generated from my research.”

Cairo to host Palestinian faction talks

Sisi conditions Netanyahu visit to Egypt on support for two-state solution

Palestinians: No to Normalization with the ‘Zionist entity’

Egypt has sent official invitations to the Palestinian factions to visit Cairo on Feb. 7 and start a comprehensive national dialogue. Both Hamas and Fatah announced their intention to participate in the dialogue in order to sign a charter of honor to hold the Palestinian elections on time and to abide by their results. Representatives of the Palestinian factions will arrive in the Egyptian capital for the talks. Officials in the two largest Palestinian movements, Fatah and Hamas, said in statements that the Cairo meetings, which will last for several days, will focus on contentious issues and search for consensus. Fatah officials said the dialogue will focus on mechanisms for the success of the Palestinian elections scheduled for the middle of this year. Last month, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas called for legislative elections on May 22 and presidential elections on July 31. These will be the first legislative elections since 2006 and presidential elections since 2005.

Iranian-Backed Forces Receive New Missiles As Tensions Grow In Iraq

The second month of 2021 began with preparations by Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) for new round of hostilities. Kata’ib Hezbollah received short and medium range rockets through Syria, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Kata’ib Hezbollah is a key member of the PMU, actively participates in the fight against ISIS since the emergence of the group in Iraq, and is a vocal supporter of the current attempts to oust the US presence from Iraq. At the same time, the PMU are subject to more and more frequent ISIS attacks in recent days. As the terrorists appear to be popping up all around. On January 31st, the PMU said they repelled an ISIS attack in the region of Jurf al-Sakhar in the province of Babil. These apparent appearances by ISIS members coincide with reports by pro-Iranian sources blaming the US for airlifting them. On January 31st, in an interview with the al-Maloumeh news website, Sabah al-Akili claimed that the US military airlifts ISIS units into areas behind PMU positions in the Jurf al-Sakhar region. Tensions in the Middle East continue deepening. The advent of reports of the airlifting of terrorists is something that’s been rare since the Obama-era. It appears that the region is once again subject to this known and proven method of “diplomatic intervention.”

Iran deepens breach of nuclear deal at underground enrichment site

Biden orders USS Nimitz aircraft carrier home in possible signal to Iran

What is Iran’s mega-missile and what does it mean for nuclear deal?

International Court of Justice claims jurisdiction to hear Iran’s dispute against US sanctions

Iran has deepened a key breach of its 2015 nuclear deal, enriching uranium with a larger number of advanced centrifuge machines in an underground plant as it faces off with the new US administration on salvaging the accord. Tehran has recently accelerated its breaches of the deal, raising pressure on US President Joe Biden as both sides say they are willing to come back into compliance with the badly eroded agreement if the other side moves first. “Iran has completed the installation of one of these three cascades, containing 174 IR-2m centrifuges, and, on 30 January 2021, Iran began feeding the cascade with UF6,” the International Atomic Energy Agency said in a report obtained by Reuters on Tuesday, referring to uranium hexafluoride feedstock. The IAEA later confirmed that the Islamic Republic had started enriching with the second cascade. Tehran is also pressing ahead with the installation of more advanced centrifuges, the report indicated. Of the remaining two cascades of IR-2m machines, installation of one had begun while the other’s installation was “nearing completion,” it said. Meanwhile, The United States aircraft carrier USS Nimitz, known for anchoring US power in the Middle East, has been ordered back home, US Naval Institute News said citing American officials. The move was seen as a possible signal to Iran to deescalate tensions amid efforts by the Biden administration to open negotiations on a new nuclear deal.

Iran Hosts Afghan Taliban Leader as Peace Talks Stalled

Iran has hosted the political leader of Afghanistan’s Taliban during the past week, offering Tehran’s own help as a mediator in peace talks between the insurgents and the Afghan government that have become stalled in Qatar. Shi’ite Muslim Iran has been a foe of the hardline Sunni Muslim Taliban for decades, but has been openly meeting with Taliban leaders for the past few years as the United States has started negotiating the exit of its troops from Afghanistan. Washington has accused Iran in the past of providing covert aid to Taliban fighters against US forces. Iran‘s Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met Taliban political chief Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar in Tehran, and told him that Washington was not a “good mediator” for the conflict, Iran‘s Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday. Iran supports an inclusive Afghan government that would include all ethnic groups and sects, Zarif was quoted as saying. Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem said on Twitter that the meetings had taken place “in a good atmosphere”. “The situations in Afghanistan, Intra-Afghan negotiations, the full implementation of the Doha agreement and Afghanistan’s & region’s need (for) peace were discussed,” he added.

US Mint Warns It Can’t Meet “Surging Demand” For Silver & Gold

Is ‘The Reddit Army’ On The Verge Of Creating The Most Epic Silver Short Squeeze In U.S. History?

With The Fed printing money ‘out the wazoo’, monetizing COVID relief package debt as fast as Congress can pass the bills, demand for bullion was already surging. However, the last week or so, on the heels of the Reddit-Raiders taking aim at Silver, demand for silver (and gold coins) has exploded… Sales of U.S. gold bullion coins rose 258% in 2020 while silver coin demand was up 28%, the U.S. Mint said Tuesday. Which has led to bullion dealers running dry of stock and physical premium to paper silver prices soaring to record highs. “There are massive shortages. We’ll be completely out of stock if it carries on like this – the first time since our company opened in Singapore seven years ago,” said David Mitchell, managing director at Indigo Precious Metals. “In the short term, stocks may run out since it takes a long time for sea shipping, but overall supply is ample,” said Peter Fung, head of dealing at Hong Kong-based Wing Fung Precious Metals. And now, courtesy of Reuters, we have an answer to the shortage. The US Mint is limiting distribution of its gold, silver and platinum coins to specific dealers because of heavy demand, and a limited number of suppliers of metals, it said in a statement. The United States Mint said on Tuesday it was unable to meet surging demand for its gold and silver bullion coins in 2020 and through January, due partly to pandemic-driven demand and plant capacity issues… Heavy buying has continued in 2021, it said, squeezing supplies, which had already been tight as the coronavirus affected production.

Eurozone Economy Contracts In Final Quarter Of 2020

The Eurozone economy contracted with 0.7% q/q in the final quarter of last year. This means the economy shrank 6.8% in 2020, which is less than expected after the gigantic losses in the first half of the year. Going forward, the apparent resilience of the economy, very much reinforced by government support measures, bodes some comfort. That said, the third wave and accompanying containment measures likely lead to another GDP contraction in Q1. Moreover, new mutations, a slow vaccination trajectory and resurfacing supply chain issues could hamper the recovery for some time longer.

Federal Mask Cops To Start Targeting Travelers Today

Cue the federal mask cops. Americans are now required to wear masks in planes, trains, buses, subways, taxis, car services, boats, and transportation hubs, per a new order from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) that took effect today. Masks must be of a style approved by the federal government and must fit properly. Failure to comply will result in being prohibited from traveling, booted from the transit in question, and potential criminal penalties. The order will be enforced by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents and “other federal authorities,” as well as state and local officials. “To the extent permitted by law…federal agencies are required to implement additional measures enforcing the provisions of this Order,” the CDC says. “CDC reserves the right to enforce through criminal penalties,” the agency adds, though it claims not to intend “to rely primarily on these criminal penalties.” The feds may also implement “additional civil measures enforcing the provisions” of the order (which “is not a rule within the meaning of the Administrative Procedure Act,” the CDC notes, “but rather is an emergency action”). Creating a vast network of law enforcement officials empowered to enforce these mask rules will of course provide a handy new excuse for monitoring and surveilling citizens. Meanwhile, deputizing federal agents, state authorities, and local cops to enforce transit mask rules will open up all sorts of new police harassment and abuse opportunities.

New COVID-19 Strain Could Be Vaccine-Resistant Due To New Mutation, Study Finds

A new study from Public Health England found that the COVID-19 variant first discovered in the United Kingdom in December could be more resistant to vaccines due to a new mutation, The Hill reported Tuesday. The COVID-19 strain known as B.1.1.7 has quickly spread across the UK and has now appeared in 72 countries, according to The Hill. It has reached 32 states in the U.S. The CDC released a report stating it would likely become the dominant strain by March. It is much more contagious than other strains of the virus, and some evidence shows that it could be more lethal, The Hill reported. While existing vaccines are effective against the B.1.1.7 strain, a new mutation, known as E484K, has appeared and proven to cause vaccine-resistance, The Hill reported.

Destructive flash floods hit Izmir after more than a month’s worth of rain in just 6 hours, Turkey

Destructive flash floods lashed the Turkish Aegean coastal province of Izmir on Tuesday, February 2, 2021, resulting in heavy damage, one fatality, and another person missing. Authorities called the situation a disaster, advising residents to stay indoors and only leave their homes when necessary. A weather station in Güzelyali recorded 126 mm (4.9 inches) of rain in 24 hours, Izmir municipality reported. Of the total amount, 113 mm (4.4 inches) fell from 03:00 to 09:00 LT, February 2 — more than Izmir’s average for the entire month of February (102.3 mm (4 inches)). The resulting flash flooding blocked main roads in the downtown area and surrounding districts of Aliaga, Foca, and Dikili, killing one person and leaving another one missing. The two individuals were trapped in a vehicle that was washed away by rising water in the town of Menderes. Mayor Tunc Soyer said the situation was a disaster as the flood caused heavy damage in the province, prompting a half-day leave to public employees. In Balcova district, several streams overflowed, affecting many residences and businesses in Karabaglar and Bayrakh.

Every US state will see below freezing temperatures over the next week

It’s about to get so cold that boiling water will flash freeze, frostbite could occur within 30 minutes and it will become a shock to the system for even those who are used to the toughest winters. The coldest air of the season will be diving south, not leaving anyone out. Every single state in the US — including Hawaii — will reach below freezing temperatures on Monday morning. This includes 86% of the country and 235 million people, and one blast of arctic air is responsible for much of that. This frigid cold is compliments of the polar vortex, a large area of low pressure located near the poles. During the winter months it breaks down, sending cold air that has been bottled up, southward. It can be responsible for extremely frigid temperatures and huge plunges of cold air. The polar vortex has been weakened even more so this year by the Sudden Stratospheric Warmings that occur about six times a decade. This will cause the polar vortex to weaken even further, bringing cold air outbreaks to the US, which allows cold air that has been bottled up high int he atmosphere, to be release southward, making for bitterly cold conditions at the surface.

Palestinian fatwa bans Muslims from following ‘modern Abrahamic faith’

The Palestinian Supreme Fatwa Council on Wednesday condemned the use of the term “Abraham Accords” to refer to the normalization agreements between Israel and the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain. The council, the Islamic judicial body governing affairs under Islamic law in east Jerusalem, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip, ruled that the “alleged Abrahamic religion project, in addition to targeting the Muslim faith, was a political use of the concept of the Abrahamic religion; benefits the occupier; and constitutes a clear threat to our nation’s causes, first and foremost the Palestinian cause and al-Aqsa Mosque.” The council claimed that those behind the use of the term “Abraham Accords” were seeking to “redraw the map of the Middle East in line with the Greater Israel map.” It said that the Abraham project gives the indigenous peoples that claim to be the true sons of Abraham “the opportunity to integrate into the region and claim their purported historical rights.” According to the council, the decision to name the normalization agreements after the “modern Abrahamic religion is a form of deception.”

Terror group claims responsibility for attack on Israeli embassy in India

A terror organization called Jaish-ul-Hind, believed to be affiliated with Iran, has taken responsibility for Friday’s attack near the Israeli embassy in New Delhi, according to Indian media. An explosion occurred near the embassy, Israel’s Foreign Ministry confirmed Friday. There were no casualties in the incident, and no damage was caused to the embassy building, the Foreign Ministry said. The explosion damaged the window panes of three nearby parked cars, a Delhi police spokesman said in a statement. The site of the blast was quickly cordoned off by police. Indian police said the explosion was caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) and the impact from the blast is said to have been felt within a 20-25 meter radius, Indian media reported. On Saturday afternoon, Indian security forces investigating the explosion issued a request from the country’s Bureau of Immigration for any information on Iranian citizens who had recently entered the country, local media reported. A few hours later, the India Today TV network reported that Indian security forces had interrogated several Iranian citizens suspected involvement, according to Walla.

Qatar pledges $360M in aid to Hamas-ruled Gaza

The Qatari government on Sunday said it would provide $360 million in assistance for the Gaza Strip during the coming year. The Qatari aid, delivered with Israeli approval, has provided some relief to the local economy and is seen as a factor in preventing lingering tensions between Israel and Hamas from spilling over into renewed fighting. The Qatari announcement comes as Hamas and the Palestinian Authority are trying to hold new elections in the Palestinian territories. Kosovo to establish diplomatic relations with Israel on Monday

Israel, Kosovo establish diplomatic ties over Zoom

Israel and Kosovo will establish full diplomatic relations on Monday, Kosovo’s Minister of Foreign Relations, Meliza Haradinaj-Stubla, wrote on her official website. The signing will be held in a virtual event with Haradinaj-Stubla and Foreign Minister Gaby Ashkenazi. In a video posted on social media, Haradinaj-Stubla cited the “long friendship between our peoples,” and said that Israelis and Kosovars have a similar ethos, in that “despite the challenges we faced and that affected our existence we remained invincible as peoples and never gave up nor did we lose hope.” Israel-Kosovo relations came as part of a Trump administration-led agreement in September between Kosovo and Serbia to open business ties between the countries. Those agreements also included normalization between Israel and Kosovo and for both Balkan states to open embassies in Jerusalem. Kosovo would be the first Muslim-majority country to have the first embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, and it and Serbia would be the first European countries to do so.

At least two people were killed and more than 90 wounded in an explosion at a gas station on Saturday afternoon in the Houthi-controlled central city of Bayda, a health official told Arab News. A video circulating on social media showed a large ball of fire emanating from the gas station as panicked drivers and pedestrians fled the scene. “At least 20 critically wounded people were taken to hospitals in Sanaa,” said the health official, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. Houthi media did not mention what triggered the explosion, but the official said that the gas station was built recently and is part of a large fuel and gas black market, which has grown in recent years inside Houthi-controlled areas.

Iran says nuclear deal non-negotiable, rejects new participants

Iran presumed just weeks away from a nuclear weapon

Iran’s Foreign Ministry said on Saturday that its 2015 nuclear agreement with six world powers was non-negotiable and rejected any changes to the participants in the accord. The announcement came in response to French President Emmanuel Macron’s statement on Friday that any new negotiations should include other countries in the region, such as Saudi Arabia. France, along with China, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States and Germany, was an original signatory to the nuclear agreement. Both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have said that they should be involved in any new talks with Iran. The two countries also want new talks to address Iran’s ballistic-missile program and its support for proxies in the region, reported the AFP. Biden Scraps Afghan Peace Deal, NATO To Remain In Afghanistan

US President Joe Biden’s has scrapped the peace deal with Taliban initiated by the Trump administration to completely pullout foreign troops from Afghanistan by May 2021. The militant group assured not to allow the country to become a refuge for terrorists and also conduct intra-Afghan peace talks. Reuters has reported, citing four senior NATO officials speaking on condition of anonymity. “There will be no full withdrawal by allies by April-end,” one of the officials said. “Conditions have not been met, the NATO source said. And with the new US administration, there will be tweaks in the policy, the sense of hasty withdrawal which was prevalent will be addressed and we could see a much more calculated exit strategy.” Trump’s order to cut off US troop numbers in Afghanistan to 2500 troops in total was confirmed by the Pentagon in the Mid of January. Despite commitments outlined by Trump before he left office, an estimate by NATO states that about 10,000 foreign troops remain stationed in Afghanistan, with the troop numbers expected to remain unchanged until after May. A State Department spokesman insisted that Biden remains committed to bringing a “responsible end to the ‘forever wars’”, but was also adamant about “protecting Americans from terrorist and other threats”. Zabihullah Mujahid, a Taliban spokesman told a news agency that the militant group remains committed to the peace deal signed in Doha last February, and doesn’t want to hear any more “excuses” from NATO.

India protests: Internet cut to hunger-striking farmers in Delhi

India has suspended mobile internet services in three areas around the capital, Delhi, where farmers are staging a hunger strike in protest at new agriculture laws. The government said the shutdown would continue until Sunday night to “maintain public safety”. Tens of thousands of protesting farmers have been camped out on Delhi’s outskirts for more than a month. Talks between unions and the government have failed to break the deadlock. The protest made international headlines on Tuesday when a tractor rally ended in violent clashes that left one protester dead and dozens of police officers injured. Some demonstrators stormed Delhi’s historic Red Fort and occupied it until police pushed them back. On Friday, clashes broke out at Singhu when a group of unidentified men approached farmers and reportedly told them to leave. Farmers say the men threw stones at them and destroyed tents. Several injuries were reported. Indian media said the men were local residents who accused the protesters of disturbing the peace and damaging the local economy.

Thousands join fresh protests across Russia

Thousands of Russians have been taking part in unauthorised protests to demand the release of the jailed opposition leader Alexei Navalny. More than 5,000 people have been detained, a monitoring group says. In Moscow police closed metro stations and blocked off the city centre. Mr Navalny was jailed on his return to Russia after recovering from an attempt to kill him with a nerve agent. Protesters played cat-and-mouse with police, getting up close to officers before retreating to safety. Police snatch squads pulled some protesters through the lines of riot shields. Footage showed a stream of people being escorted on to buses by riot police. Protesters then attempted to reach the Matrosskaya Tishina prison where Mr Navalny is being held. Mr Navalny’s wife, Yulia Navalnaya, was among those detained at Sunday’s protest. She was later released. Rallies in support of Mr Navalny also took place in eastern Russia. In the Siberian city of Novosibirsk, at least 2,000 people marched through the city chanting “Freedom” and “Putin is a thief”.

Myanmar coup: Aung San Suu Kyi detained as military seizes control

Biden Admin Responds To Myanmar’s Military Coup: We ‘Will Take Action’

Myanmar’s military has seized power after detaining Aung San Suu Kyi and other democratically elected leaders. Troops are patrolling streets in major cities and communications are limited. The top army commander is now in charge and a one-year state of emergency has been declared, army TV announced. The move follows a landslide win by Ms Suu Kyi’s party in an election the army claims was marred by fraud. She urged her supporters to “not accept this” and “protest against the coup”. In the early hours of Monday, the army’s TV station said power had been handed over to commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing. Ms Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leaders of the National League for Democracy (NLD) were arrested in a series of raids. No major violence has been reported. Soldiers blocked roads in the capital, Nay Pyi Taw, and the main city, Yangon. International and domestic TV channels, including the state broadcaster, went off air. Internet and phone services have been disrupted. Banks said they had been forced to close. The military takeover follows weeks of tensions between the armed forces and the government following parliamentary elections lost by the army-backed opposition.

LGBT activists are cheering Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s announcement that he will reverse an order from President Donald Trump and put up “pride” flags at U.S. Embassies around the world. Outfront magazine reported on the development: The Biden administration is off to a hopeful start, as Secretary of State nominee, Antony Blinken, has confirmed a recommitment to LGBTQ rights. In a memo from July 2020, former Secretary of Defense Mark Esper released a list of flags permitted to be displayed at U.S. military bases. Missing from the list was the LGBTQ pride flag, which Esper compared to the confederate flag. Prior to the ban, embassies raised the flag during pride month on the official embassy flagpole. During the hearing, Blinken also confirmed that he plans to appoint an envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTQ persons, a position created by Barack Obama in 2015 that wasn’t filled during the Trump presidency. “Biden is the first U.S. president to openly embrace a full range of queer rights, including transgender equality,” Outfront magazine reported.

Small-Town Iowa Public Schools Teach Preschoolers Transgenderism And Judging People By Skin Color

Next week, the Ames, Iowa public school district is sponsoring a “Black Lives Matter week of action” that includes teaching transgenderism to children as young as four years old, Young America’s Foundation reports. On the school district’s webpage about this “week of action” slated for Feb. 1-5, it reprints the “Black Lives Matter at School Guiding Principles,” which include the following:
6. Queer Affirming – We are committed to fostering a queer‐affirming network. When we gather, we do so with the intention of freeing ourselves from the tight grip of heteronormative thinking or, rather, the belief that all in the world are heterosexual unless s/he or they disclose otherwise.”
7. Trans Affirming – We are committed to embracing and making space for trans siblings to participate and lead. We are committed to being self-reflexive and doing the work required to dismantle cis-gender privilege…”
11. Black Villages – We are committed to disrupting the Western prescribed nuclear family structure requirement by supporting each other as extended families and ‘villages’ that collectively care for one another, and especially ‘our’ children to the degree that mothers, parents, and children are comfortable.”
Besides being anti-family and adamant about teaching sexual information to children as young as four, the curriculum is overtly racist. Here are just a few examples. The school district’s recommended lessons for middle and high school students during this week include a “Justice for Trayvon Martin Tool Kit” that includes the following statement for class discussion: “Discuss George Zimmerman and his Internalized Racism [sic] how even though he is Latino, why he is labeled as white. Ex. George Zimmerman is ethnically latino[sic]–however, [sic] he has the same racial privilege as white person, living in a gated community. He has a light skin color, and he holds [sic] no spanish [sic] name. So Zimmerman is so white-washed, and consumed by white supremacy that [sic] is why he is white.”

America’s murder rate increase in 2020 has ‘no modern precedent,’ crime analyst group finds

Murder rates saw a “historic” increase in 2020 compared to 2019, with more than 1,200 additional killings year-over-year in a sample of 34 American cities, according to a study released Monday. “The coronavirus pandemic, continuing incidents of police violence, and rising homicide and violent crime rates each pose massive policy challenges in their own right, but the interplay between them creates even more difficult decisions for policymakers,” states a report from the National Commission of COVID-19 and Criminal Justice (NCCCJ). “Despite this difficulty, leaders at all levels of government should take bold action in responding to all three crises.” Homicide rates jumped by 30% from 2019 to 2020, while gun assault and aggravated assault rates climbed 8% and 6%, respectively, experts found.
