 2 earthquakes shake Israel’s north within hour

The epicenter of the tremblors was said to be in the Mediterranean Sea, west of southern Lebanon. The Geophysical Institute said the first earthquake, which occurred at 5:38am, measured 3.2 in magnitude and its epicenter was some 14 km (8.6 miles) north of Beit She’an in the north. Beit She’an has a unique geographical setting due to being located at the junction of the Jordan River Valley and the Jezreel Valley. The second tremblor took place around 6:53 am and measured 2.7 in magnitude. Its exact epicenter is said to have been some 54km (33 miles) north of Nahariya the northernmost coastal city in Israel.

   Dozens die in attack on Syrian troops at edge of rebel stronghold

Al-Qaeda-linked fighters attacked Syrian government positions Sunday on the edge of the country’s last rebel stronghold, triggering intense clashes that killed nearly three dozen combatants across both sides, opposition activists said. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said members of the al-Qaeda-linked group known as Horas al-Din attacked government forces in the Ghab plain area. It said the fighting left 21 troops and 13 Horas al-Din members dead.

19 Iranians killed, 15 injured after Navy vessel hit by friendly fire

Nineteen Iranians were killed and 15 others were injured after an Iranian naval vessel was reportedly hit by friendly fire during a naval exercise on Sunday. The IRGC-affiliated Tasnim News Agency reported that the “accident” involving the Konarak support vessel took place in the waters off Jask Port in the Gulf of Oman. Two of the wounded are in intensive care units and the others are in stable condition, according to Fars News Agency. The military stressed that the incident was being investigated by “expert teams” and that “any speculation” about the incident should be avoided. Initial reports from Iran stated that the Konarak was “sunk” by a missile fired by Iran’s Jamaran frigate resulting in a number of seamen being killed or missing, according to Radio Farda. Some reports indicated dozens of injuries and deaths, with about 40 military personnel estimated to have been on board at the time.

Turkey Threatens Retaliation Against Haftar’s Forces in Libya

Shelling of Tripoli’s airport hit fuel tanks and damaged passenger planes after forces loyal to Libya’s renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar fired dozens of rockets into Tripoli. Six people were killed and dozens of others wounded in the attacks, the interior ministry said in a statement, which included as many as 80 rocket strikes. The transport ministry said one of the damaged planes was preparing to fly to Spain to retrieve Libyans stranded in Europe by the coronavirus lockdown. Video shared by an airport worker showed black smoke billowing over the apron. Photographs showed shrapnel damage sprayed across the nose of a passenger plane. The attack on Saturday was the latest to target Mitiga International Airport in Libya’s capital, the seat of the country’s internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA). Haftar’s eastern-based forces have been trying to seize Tripoli since April last year.

Riot police clashed with hundreds of protesters in Berlin yesterday during a demonstration against coronavirus lockdown in Germany. Despite the central government easing lockdown on Wednesday, infected cases have begun to rise in Germany again, with some states saying they will not lift measures if the numbers continue to spike. Overall infections rose by 1,251 cases yesterday with 147 new deaths. In Berlin, hundreds of protesters swarmed Alexanderplatz, defying the government’s limit of 50 people for outside gatherings, clashing with riot officers and shouting ‘Wir sind das Volk!’ [‘We are the people!’] and ‘Freiheit!’ [‘Freedom!’].

 Hong Kong: Hundreds arrested as protest movement returns

Some 230 people were arrested in protests over the weekend in Hong Kong, local authorities said on Monday. Pro-democracy demonstrations have picked back up in the city after weeks of under a coronavirus-related lockdown. Police said the detainees were between the ages of 12 and 65, and the charges ranged from assaulting an officer to failure to provide proof of identity. Democratic lawmaker Roy Kwong was amongst those arrested, officers said he was being charged with disorderly conduct. Video showed him being surrounded by police and pushed to the ground. On Sunday, protestors had gathered for a sing-along event at a shopping mall when hundreds of riot police were called in to disperse the crowd. According to police, they also blocked roads in the city’s Mongkok district and started fires. Onlookers and journalists also got caught up in the ensuing clashes, with police firing tear gas at reporters and activists alike.

Indian and Chinese troops ‘clash on border’ in Sikkim

Dozens of Indian and Chinese soldiers have exchanged physical blows in a clash on the shared border, Indian media report. Seven Chinese and four Indian troops were injured, an army official reportedly said, near the Naku La sector in the border state of Sikkim. Local commanders spoke and resolved the dispute, which took place on Saturday. The two countries have competing claims over their shared 3,400 kilometre (2,100 mile) border.

   As U.S. meat workers fall sick and supplies dwindle, exports to China soar

U.S. President Donald Trump ordered meat processing plants to stay open to protect the nation’s food supply even as workers got sick and died. Yet the plants have increasingly been exporting to China while U.S. consumers face shortages, a Reuters analysis of government data showed. Trump, who is in an acrimonious public dispute with Beijing over its handling of the coronavirus outbreak, invoked the 1950 Defense Production Act on April 28 to keep plants open. Now he is facing criticism from some lawmakers, consumers and plant employees for putting workers at risk in part to help ensure China’s meat supply. “We know that over time exports are critically important. I think we need to focus on meeting domestic demand at this point,” said Mike Naig, the agriculture secretary in the top U.S. pork-producing state of Iowa who supported Trump’s order. Processors including Smithfield Foods, owned by China’s WH Group Ltd, Brazilian-owned JBS USA and Tyson Foods Inc temporarily closed about 20 U.S. meat plants as the virus infected thousands of employees, prompting meatpackers and grocers to warn of shortages. Some plants have resumed limited operations as workers afraid of getting sick stay home.

   “Snow in Central Park! In May!”: Rare snowfall ties 1977 record, National Weather Service says

Snow fell in Central Park early Saturday morning, tying a record for May snowfall set in 1977, according to the National Weather Service. “In New York City at Central Park this morning, it was- it tied for the latest snowfall we’ve ever seen,” said CBS News meteorologist Jeff Berardelli on “CBS This Morning: Saturday.” In upstate New York, a significant amount of snow left the region looking like a winter wonderland – in the middle of spring. According to Berardelli, the disorienting May weather is due to the polar vortex, which normally only touches down in the winter. The strange weather will extend throughout Mother’s Day weekend, according to Berardelli, as freeze watches are in place from the Midwest to the Northeast. More records could be shattered early in the week, as temperatures are expected to plummet again early Tuesday morning. “This cold front is forecast to reinforce the abnormally cold air-mass in the eastern U.S. to kick-off the upcoming week,” according to the National Weather Service.

A Series Of Large Earthquakes Is Rocking “The Ring Of Fire”

Within the past several days, large earthquakes have been striking all along the outer rim of the Pacific Ocean, and many are wondering if all of this activity could potentially be building up to something really big. You may not have heard about it yet, but a magnitude 4.5 earthquake rocked San Diego on Sunday afternoon.  That is a rather large quake for that particular area, and it is just one of hundreds that have been hitting the region.  In fact, CalTech says that there have been 1,227 earthquakes in California and Nevada over the last 7 days. Meanwhile, the section of the Ring of Fire that runs along the west coast of South America has also been getting hit pretty hard.  A magnitude 5.4 quake struck northern Chile on Sunday, and that really shook a lot of people up. Subsequently, the portion of the Ring of Fire that runs along the coast of Japan was hit by a magnitude 5.8 earthquake very late on Sunday. And that unusual event in Japan was very quickly followed by a magnitude 5.6 earthquake in Indonesia.

 Gaza militants fire rocket at Israel, IDF responds hitting Hamas posts

A rocket was fired late Tuesday from the Gaza Strip at Israeli border communities the IDF said adding that the rocket landed in an open field and caused no injuries or damage. Israel responded with tank fire at three military posts of the Hamas terror group.  The rocket fire came after relative calm on the border since late March when Gaza militants fired a rocket into Israel. Negotiations are reported to be taking place for the release of the remains of two Israeli soldiers believed dead and two other civilians believed to be held by Hamas in exchange for prisoners held in Israeli jails. According to the German Die Zeit news site report Wednesday, German and Swiss negotiators are trying to broker the deal between Israel, Egypt and the Hamas rulers of the strip.

Fifty Percent Spike in North American Jews Interested in Immigrating to Israel Amid Virus

April saw a 50 percent increase in the number of application requests from the U.S. for immigration to Israel compared with the same month last year, and that number is expected to grow, a report in the Hebrew-language Makor Rishon newspaper said. A total of 455 aliyah requests were filed by North American Jews in April in comparison with last year’s 302, aliyah (immigration to Israel) group Nefesh B’Nefesh said, according to Makor Rishon. Nativ, which organizes aliyah from the former Soviet Union, said it had received 20,000 new immigration requests following the coronavirus crisis outbreak, compared with 6,000 beforehand. The Jewish Agency, which is in charge of facilitating aliyah from most of the world, projected a 30 percent rise over the next two years as a result of the pandemic. Jewish Agency officials met with officials Ministry of Immigration and Absorption representatives to discuss measures to prepare for the influx.

‘Building momentum’: Israel approves plans for thousands of new homes in West Bank

Israel announced a plan for thousands of new Jewish settlement homes in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, Reuters reports, as Washington voiced its readiness to back de facto Israeli annexations there. PM Benjamin Netanyahu, who is trying to clinch a deal to form a coalition government, wants to start cabinet discussions on July 1 about declaring Israeli sovereignty over the settlements and the strategically important Jordan Valley in the West Bank. Fresh construction for the settlement of Efrat was approved on land that could accommodate “around 7,000 housing units,” Defense Minister Naftali Bennett’s office said. “The building momentum in the country must not be stopped, even for a second,” tweeted Bennett.

Alleged Israeli airstrikes targeted a research center and a military base in Syria on Monday night where Iranian militias are based, the fifth such strike in two weeks, according to Syrian media. Further airstrikes by unidentified aircraft on Iranian militias were reported near the Syria-Iraq border shortly after. A source from the Syrian military told the Syrian state news agency SANA that “hostile aircraft” coming from Al-Thawrah, southeast of Aleppo, attacked military depots in the Al-Safira area. Syrian air defenses were activated in response. Earlier, SANA reported that the scientific research center in Aleppo was targeted in the strikes.

Iranian, Palestinian militias in Aleppo evacuate after airstrikes

The Iranian-backed Baqir brigade began relocating its military headquarters in Aleppo on Tuesday after alleged Israeli airstrikes targeted a research center in the city this week, according to the Step News Agency. The brigade erected checkpoints at the southern and eastern entrances of the city, began checking the identities of passers-by and searching vehicles. The headquarters are being moved from within the city to a new area in the city’s outskirts due to fears of being targeted by Israeli airstrikes. The formerly Iranian-backed and currently Russian-backed Palestinian Liwa al-Quds (Jerusalem Brigade) militia in Aleppo also issued a similar security alert recently in the Bab al-Nairab neighborhood of Aleppo, according to Step. Non-residents were prevented from entering the area by the brigade, which is also working to move its headquarters outside of the neighborhood. For the first time since Iran entered Syria with thousands of troops and militia fighters, the Islamic Republic is reducing its forces and clearing out from bases in the war-torn country, a senior defense source said Tuesday.

Three rockets fall near Baghdad Airport

Three Katyusha rockets landed in the perimeter of Baghdad International Airport on Wednesday but caused no damage or casualties, the Iraqi military said. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. Security officials said it was not immediately clear whether a military base hosting U.S. troops next to the airport was the target. After Wednesday’s attack the military said it found a rocket launcher with a timer in a rural area in western Baghdad, and there were no reported damages or casualties. The rockets were fired from the Bakriya neighborhood, about 6 km (4 miles) northeast of the airport, and security forces were deployed to search the area, security sources said.

Iran’s Rouhani pledges “crushing response” if U.S. extends arms embargo

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatened a “crushing response” on Wednesday if the United States goes ahead with plans to extend an embargo on Iranian trade of conventional arms, which the United Nations is set to lift later this year. Under Iran’s deal with world powers to accept limits to its nuclear program in return for the lifting of sanctions, a U.N. weapons embargo is due to expire in October. The United States, which exited the deal in 2018, says it wants to extend the embargo. In a speech on Wednesday, Rouhani repeated Iran’s longstanding criticism of Washington’s decision to exit the nuclear deal, which he called a “stupid mistake”. “If America wants to return to the deal, it should lift all the sanctions on Tehran and compensate for the reimposition of sanctions,” said Rouhani, a pragmatist whose rhetoric towards the United States is frequently more measured than that of some officials. “Iran will give a crushing response if the arms embargo on Tehran is extended,” Rouhani added.

   Internal Chinese report warns Beijing faces Tiananmen-like global backlash over virus

An internal Chinese report warns that Beijing faces a rising wave of hostility in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak that could tip relations with the United States into confrontation, people familiar with the paper told Reuters. The report, presented early last month by the Ministry of State Security to top Beijing leaders including President Xi Jinping, concluded that global anti-China sentiment is at its highest since the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, the sources said. As a result, Beijing faces a wave of anti-China sentiment led by the United States in the aftermath of the pandemic and needs to be prepared in a worst-case scenario for armed confrontation between the two global powers, according to people familiar with the report’s content, who declined to be identified given the sensitivity of the matter. The report was drawn up by the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR), a think tank affiliated with the Ministry of State Security, China’s top intelligence body.

Venezuela accuses Colombia of attempting ‘terrorist’ sea invasion

Trump denies U.S. involvement in alleged Venezuela plot

The Venezuelan government has said it foiled an attempted sea incursion by “terrorist mercenaries” from Colombia. In a televised address, Interior Minister Nestor Reverol said the group arrived on speedboats at the coastal state of La Guaira early on Sunday. President Nicolás Maduro often accuses adversaries of attempting to overthrow him with the backing of the US. Venezuela’s opposition dismissed the allegations, saying the apparent incursion was staged. Colombia described the government’s assertion as unfounded. Venezuela broke off diplomatic relations with Colombia last year. In the Venezuelan government’s statement, Mr Reverol said the group had landed in the town of Macuto, about 21 miles (34km) north of the capital Caracas. “They tried to carry out an invasion by sea, a group of terrorist mercenaries from Colombia, in order to commit terrorist acts in the country, murdering leaders of the revolutionary government,” he said. Diosdado Cabello, leader of the ruling Socialist Party, said eight people were killed and two were detained, while Defence Minister Vladimir Padrino said a speedboat had sunk and military vessels were searching the coast for survivors.

  U.S. Debt Sales to Hit Record With Deficit Headed to $4 Trillion

Layoffs Start Turning From Temporary to Permanent Across America

The U.S. Treasury is boosting the amount of debt it plans to issue in the coming quarterly refunding auctions to a record $96 billion to provide government funding as the economy heads into a recession caused by the coronavirus. The department said Wednesday it anticipates auctioning the first re-booted 20-year bond on May 20, with an expected initial offering size of $20 billion — larger than most analysts projected. It also unveiled plans to boost overall issuance with a focus on increases to longer-term debt. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin’s plans for unprecedented debt issuance come as the Trump administration braces for what it sees as a 40% contraction in economic growth in the second quarter. The federal deficit is set to surpass estimates of $4 trillion for this year as lawmakers discuss additional economic stimulus. The Treasury said its “borrowing needs have increased substantially as a result of the federal government’s response to the Covid-19 outbreak.” It said it has raised an “unprecedented” $1.46 trillion on net since the end of March.

  Beef Prices Explode To Record High As More Stores Limit Meat Purchases

Just a few days ago we marveled as wholesale beef prices had soared over 60% from their February lows to a record $331 per 100 pounds. Well, that was then, because today alone, the wholesale price soared by 8.6% or $32.60 to a new all time high of $410.05, almost doubling in less than a month. The reason: an unprecedented collapse of the nation’s food supply chain as over a dozen meat processing plants have been shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic. Beef prices are soaring even after Trump issued an executive order  to address meat shortages, however with food workers scared and unwilling to return to work, Trump’s attempt to normalize prices has backfired, because all it has achieved was a frantic scramble by consumers to hoard beef resulting in even bigger shortages and higher prices. Call it a bacon run. As a result of the wave of panic-shopping at supermarkets, more grocery stores are imposing limits on meat purchases. On Friday, we reported that supermarket chain Kroger said that it has put “purchase limits” on ground beef and fresh pork at some of its stores following growing concerns over meat shortages due to coronavirus-induced supply disruptions. Other large grocers said they expect to be out of stock on different types of cuts soon.

Several Swiss international companies and civil and military organisations are piloting a new blockchain project which can deliver a secure health certificate on a mobile application. The project, called Health n Go sprouted from a blockchain-driven ticketing company called TIXnGO,  who repurposed their existing blockchain-based technology to create Health n Go Health n Go is capable of securely distributing health certificates at scale and in line with government and corporate needs in managing the pandemic. Frédéric Longatte, CEO of TIX n GO and Health n Go, said: “In light of the coronavirus crisis, we can see a potential role for the secure delivery of personal digital assets such as a health certificate. It isn’t for us to define the precise use of this technology, that is a decision to be taken by governments. But as new scientific evidence comes to light and response strategies evolve, we are ready to work with governments and corporations to apply this technology, when they deem the time is right.” Health n Go is designed to safely deliver digital health certificates from a trusted authority such as a doctor or health organisation. Each time a health certificate is issued in the platform, a unique, encrypted and completely traceable identity is attached to it. Individuals will keep their health certificates on a specific wallet on their smartphone, which can be shown on request and the QR code read by a scanner.

China Moves to Wean Itself of US Dollar Dependence, Steps Up Testing of Sovereign Digital Currency

As China expands globally, seeking significant financial autonomy and less dependency on America amid its trade war with Washington, the country has long sought to wean itself from the US-dollar dominated financial system. Finally, after years of effort, China is gearing up to release the world’s first sovereign digital currency – DCEP (short for Digital Currency/Electronic Payments). China’s central bank launched a trial program across four cities – Shenzhen, Suzhou, Xiongan and Chengdu – to test the use of its digital currency, touted as incorporating some features of cryptocurrencies, but lacking the anonymity of such digital assets, the Digital Currency Research Institute of the People’s Bank of China confirmed to the South China Morning Post (SCMP).

A Kansas City phased reopening guideline requiring churches to keep “lists” of attendees, has alarmed many who see it as an infringement on religious liberty and privacy. In the policy issued by Mayor Quinton Lucas, houses of worship are treated with the same restrictions as “non-essential” businesses in terms of keeping records of who attends a service, or even anyone who enters the building. “Never in our wildest dreams could we have imagined Nazi-like measures designed to surveil, track and spy upon what was once a free American people,” states Liberty Council, founder and Chairman Matt Staver, who didn’t mince words. “That is exactly what Kansas City’s misguided government officials are now demanding.” The new policy states “In-person religious gatherings (including weddings and funerals) may resume, subject to the 10/10/10 rule (if held inside) or limited to 50 people outside, provided social distancing precautions are followed and event organizers maintain records of all attendees.” But it is not the limit on people that has drawn the most concern, but the record keeping. The new rule requires all churches to “record the names, contact information, and approximate entry/exit time of all customers who are on premises for more than 10 minutes.” That includes churches, synagogues, and mosques along with businesses. Only medical facilities and grocery stores are exempt.

   “Murder hornets” have now entered the U.S. — and they could decimate the honeybee population

A roughly 2-inch long insect known as the “murder hornet” has made its way to the U.S. for the first time ever, researchers said. The Asian giant hornet, Vespa mandarinia, has been known to kill up to 50 people a year in Japan, according to The New York Times, and has the potential to devastate U.S. bee populations, which have already been declining. Susan Cobey, bee breeder with Washington State University’s Department of Entomology, told WSU Insider that the hornets are “like something out of a monster cartoon with this huge yellow-orange face.” The hornets made their way to the U.S. for the first time in December, when the Washington State Department of Agriculture verified four reports of sightings. The hornets were also spotted in two locations in British Columbia in the fall, according to WSDA.

A newly-discovered asteroid designated 2020 JJ flew past Earth at a very close distance of 0.03 LD / 0.0000896 AU (13 403 km / 8 328 miles) at 12:05 UTC on May 4, 2020. This is the 40^th known asteroid to flyby Earth since the start of the year and the second of the month. This is also the closest asteroid flyby since October 31, 2019 (2019 UN13), and the 6^th closest asteroid flyby on record. 2020 JJ belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids. It was first observed at Mt. Lemmon Survey, Arizona just a couple of hours before its close approach. The object has an estimated diameter between 2.7 and 6 m (8.8 to 19.7 feet).

 Arab League calls urgent meeting to torpedo Israel’s annexation plans

The Arab League will hold a virtual meeting to discuss how to organize opposition to Israel’s plan to annex large swathes of Judea and Samaria, it announced on Monday. The meeting, which is scheduled for Thursday, will be carried out by video conference and include the participation of Arab foreign ministers from across the Middle East. The ministers will “discuss in their virtual meeting providing political, legal and financial support to the Palestinian leadership to confront the Israeli plans,” the Arab League’s deputy secretary Hossam Zaki said. The meeting was called at the request of the Palestinian Authority. Last week, the Arab League’s Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit warned UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres that Israel’s plans risked “igniting tension in the region.” He accused Israel of “exploiting the world’s preoccupation with the novel coronavirus to impose a new reality on the ground.”

Syria reports Israeli missile attack near Damascus, 7 killed

Israel attacked an ammunition dump south of Damascus early on Monday, SANA, Syria’s official news agency, reports. The attack took place at around 5:00 a.m., a Syrian military source told SANA. The source said that most of the Israeli missiles were intercepted and shot down. Nevertheless, reports from Damascus said that large explosions were heard from the ammunition dump. The missiles were launched from Lebanese air space, according to the report. Israel has attacked from Lebanese air space before. The report, quoting the military source, initially said that there were no human casualties. However, SANA later said, “Three civilians were martyred and four others wounded, including a child, because shrapnel from Israeli missiles fell on houses.” It later raised the number to seven. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based opposition war monitoring group, said the Israeli missile strike targeted an Iranian stronghold near the capital that housed its forces. Israel did not confirm or deny the report. However, Arutz 7 reports that Defense Minister Naftali Bennett “alluded” to a coming operation against Iranian forces based in Syria.

  Yemen war: Separatists declare autonomous rule in south

Separatists in southern Yemen have declared self-rule, breaking a peace deal signed in November with the internationally recognised government.The Aden-based Southern Transitional Council (STC) declared a state of emergency, saying it would govern the port city and other southern provinces. The STC is supported by the United Arab Emirates. The Saudi-backed Yemeni government warned of “dangerous and catastrophic consequences”. “The announcement by the so-called transitional council of its intention to establish a southern administration is a resumption of its armed insurgency… and an announcement of its rejection and complete withdrawal from the Riyadh agreement,” Yemen’s Foreign Minister Mohammed Al-Hadhrami said in a statement.

The shuttering of the U.S. economy due to the coronavirus pandemic is a shock of historic proportions that will likely push the national unemployment rate to 16% or higher this month and require more stimulus to ensure a strong rebound, a White House economic adviser said on Sunday. “It’s a really grave situation,” President Donald Trump’s adviser, Kevin Hassett, told the ABC program “This Week.” “This is the biggest negative shock that our economy, I think, has ever seen. We’re going to be looking at an unemployment rate that approaches rates that we saw during the Great Depression” of the 1930s, Hassett added. A record 26.5 million Americans have filed for jobless benefits since mid-March, and retail sales, homebuilding and consumer confidence have all cratered. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office predicts U.S. gross domestic product will contract at nearly a 40% annual rate in the second quarter, with unemployment cresting at 16% in the third quarter. But even next year, the CBO sees the jobless rate still averaging above 10 percent.

Plant shutdowns are leaving the U.S. dangerously close to meat shortages as coronavirus outbreaks spread to suppliers across the nation and the Americas. Almost a third of U.S. pork capacity is down, the first big poultry plants closed on Friday and experts are warning that domestic shortages are just weeks away. Brazil, the world’s No. 1 shipper of chicken and beef, saw its first major closure with the halt of a poultry plant owned by JBS SA, the world’s biggest meat company. Key operations are also down in Canada, the latest being a British Columbia poultry plant. While hundreds of plants in the Americas are still running, the staggering acceleration of supply disruptions is now raising questions over global shortfalls. Taken together, the U.S., Brazil and Canada account for about 65% of world meat trade. “It’s absolutely unprecedented,” said Brett Stuart, president of Denver-based consulting firm Global AgriTrends. “It’s a lose-lose situation where we have producers at the risk of losing everything and consumers at the risk of paying higher prices. Restaurants in a week could be out of fresh ground beef.” New U.S. shutdowns are hitting at a dizzying rate. Smithfield Foods Inc., the world’s No. 1 pork producer, said Friday it was closing another operation, this one in Illinois. That news hit less than an hour after Hormel Foods Corp. said it was idling two of its Jennie-O turkey plants in Minnesota. JBS said Sunday it will shutter a beef production facility in Wisconsin. The most-recent news added to a flurry of other halts announced in the space of just a few weeks.

Human Rights Council undermines the empowerment of women and girls by lumping their concerns together with novel claims based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It includes a controversial interpretation of “gender equality” that promotes acceptance of transgender ideology and the concept of multiple, fluid, “gender identities.” By focusing on the promotion of abortion and LGBT+ rights, the U.N. report turns the focus away from serious and pressing issues facing women and girls worldwide. Women comprise 52 percent of the victims of human trafficking each year, but the report makes no mention of this or of the work that religious groups do to combat it.

Chile’s government has said it will go ahead with a controversial plan to issue certificates to people who have recovered from Covid-19. The documents would be given to people to allow them to return to work, Deputy Health Minister Paula Daza said. The World Health Organization (WHO) has said there is “no evidence” that people who contract coronavirus are immune from being infected again. It said certificates could inspire false confidence and help it spread. But Ms Daza told reporters on Sunday: “One of the things that we know is that a person who has had the illness has a lower probability of becoming ill again.” She added that the certificates would not confirm that people had immunity to Covid-19, but rather state that they had recovered from the disease and had completed a period of isolation.

This is the 34^th known asteroid to flyby Earth within 1 lunar distance since the start of the year and the 9^th so far this month. 2020 HP6 was first observed at Pan-STARRS 1, Haleakala on April 22, five days before its close approach. The object belongs to the Apollo group of asteroids and has an estimated diameter between 6.7 and 15 m (22 – 50 feet).

  EU warns incoming Israeli gov’t against West Bank annexation

The European Union on Thursday issued a warning against the incoming Israeli government’s intention to annex parts of the West Bank, saying that such a move “would constitute a serious violation of international law.” The EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said the 27-member bloc does not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the territory and that it will “continue to closely monitor the situation and its broader implications, and will act accordingly.” Earlier this week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his main rival Benny Gantz signed a coalition agreement that includes a clause to advance plans to annex parts of the West Bank, including Israeli settlements, starting on July 1. Netanyahu’s pro-settler base is eager to move forward with annexation while the friendly administration of President Donald Trump is in office. The White House’s long-awaited Mideast plan, unveiled earlier this year, envisions leaving parts of the West Bank under permanent Israeli control. The Palestinians have rejected the plan as biased. Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded to the EU with a statement deploring that Borrell “opts to see the relations between Israel and the European Union” solely through the “status of the territories.”

  Iran military chief warns they will ‘destroy’ US warships if threatened

Iran lashed out at the U.S. with a new threat on Thursday after U.S. President Donald Trump instructed the U.S. Navy to shoot down Iranian gunboats threatening U.S. warships. “I have ordered our naval forces to destroy any American terrorist force in the Persian Gulf that threatens security of Iran’s military or non-military ships,” Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Gen. Hossein Salami said on state television, as reported by Reuters. Salami added that Iran will ensure security in the Persian Gulf as one of its top priorities. “I am telling the Americans that we are absolutely determined and serious in defending our national security, our water borders, our shipping safety, and our security forces, and we will respond decisively to any sabotage,” Salami continued. In a Wednesday night interview with Fox News’ Martha McCallum, Defense Secretary Mark Esper said he and Trump discussed the shootdown order together ahead of time. “We are looking at making modifications to our practices to make sure the Iranians know to stay clear of our warships and our personnel,” he said. “We are not going to tolerate threatening behavior toward our warships.

At least 13 dead in Taliban attack on Afghan outpost

Afghan authorities said Friday more than a dozen pro-government militia members were killed during a Taliban attack on an outpost in Badghis province. Badghis police security officer Shir Aqa Alokozai said the militant group assaulted Public Uprising forces and took control of the outpost near Qala-e-Naw, located in northwest Afghanistan about 70 miles northeast of Herat and 350 miles west of Kabul. At least 13 members of the militia died in the attack and 10 are reported missing.

 U.S. warship sails through Taiwan Strait, second time in a month

A U.S. warship has sailed through the sensitive Taiwan Strait for the second time in a month, Taiwanese and U.S. militaries said on Friday, amid heightened tensions between Taiwan and China and as a Chinese aircraft carrier passes near the island. China, which considers Taiwan its own, has been angered by the Trump administration’s stepped-up support for the island, such as more arms sales, U.S. patrols near it and a visit to Washington by Vice President-elect William Lai in February. Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said the U.S. warship had transited the narrow Taiwan Strait that separates the island from its giant neighbour China in a southerly direction and was continuing to sail south. Taiwan’s armed forces monitored the ship which it described as being on an “ordinary mission”, the ministry added, without providing further details. Lt. Anthony Junco, a U.S. Seventh Fleet spokesman, named the ship involved as the guided-missile destroyer USS Barry, and said it had conducted a “routine Taiwan Strait transit” in accordance with international law. “The ship’s transit through the Taiwan Strait demonstrates the U.S. commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. The U.S. Navy will continue to fly, sail and operate anywhere international law allows,” he said.

U.S. shale producers, refiners and pipeline companies are scrambling for cash and face likely restructuring as they struggle under heavy debt loads while engulfed in the worst crisis the oil industry has faced. Fuel demand has tumbled roughly 30% worldwide as the coronavirus pandemic destroys demand for transport, provoking a massive glut of oil that has hammered global prices and left energy companies with no choice but to pump hundreds of millions of barrels into storage. Just as demand plummeted, Saudi Arabia and Russia started an oil price war, and Riyadh flooded the market with even more crude. That left the oil industry facing the prospect of a long period with prices below their production costs. Shale producers came into the crisis with already high debt levels, namely from big investments to increase production across the United States in a bet on higher prices. But in turning the United States into the world’s largest oil producer, the companies became the victims of their own success when the quick rise in supply meant returns were thin. Investors lost patience, tightened credit and pushed shale producers to stop expanding and pay them back.

McDonald’s and Starbucks are among a handful of companies taking part in a new pilot program for China’s upcoming digital yuan, according to state-backed media, as the world’s second-largest economy pushes forward with its plans for an electronic currency. The People’s Bank of China, the country’s central bank, has been developing a digital currency over the past few years. While there are very few details at the moment about its exact design, it’s unlikely to resemble popular cryptocurrency bitcoin, which supports anonymity and decentralization, that is, it’s not issued by a central authority. China’s digital yuan will be issued by the PBoC and the focus appears to be making digital payments easier and faster. McDonald’s, Starbucks and Subway are the three U.S. firms among 19 companies in total that will be participating in the digital currency trial in Xiong’an, which held a promotional event on Wednesday, state-backed Securities Times reported.

The COVID-19 Credentials Initiative (CCI) is a collaboration of more than 60 organizations working to deploy verifiable credential solutions to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Our goal is simple, we want to enable society to return to ‘normal’ in a controlled, measurable, and privacy-preserving way. The initiative is a direct response to the many calls for an ‘immunity passport,’ a digital certificate that lets individuals prove (and request proof from others) that they’ve recovered after testing negative, have tested positive for antibodies, or have received a vaccination, once one is available. By proving some level of immunity, individuals will be able to begin participating in everyday life again. Using the W3C industry standard called Verifiable Credentials, we have a blueprint to move forward. Yet while the underlying tech and standards are established, the vision for immunity certificates and other related credentials is far bigger than any one organization. To move at the speed and scale required, we need true collaboration across all fronts, and we are extending an open invitation for any organization or individual looking to join this endeavor. 

  Mystery bird illness investigated after German blue tit deaths

Thousands of blue tits have been found sick or dead in Germany, prompting an investigation by conservation groups and scientists. More than 11,000 cases of dead and sick birds, mostly blue tits, have been reported to the German conservation group NABU in the past fortnight. Most of these are reported from the west of Germany. The blue tit is found across Europe and is one of the most common visitors to UK gardens. They eat insects, caterpillars, seeds and nuts and can be spotted all year round in the UK, with the exception of some Scottish islands. According to NABU, symptoms of the diseased birds include breathing problems, no longer taking food and making no attempt to escape when approached by people. The group is advising people to stop feeding or providing drinking troughs for birds to reduce the risk of transmission between them. The first laboratory test results on the dead birds have found a bacterial infection (Suttonella ornithocola) that has been known in the UK since the 1990s and which affects birds similarly. The infection was reported in Germany in 2018. Further test results on birds are expected over the next few days.

At least seven people were killed after tornadoes tore through parts of Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana Wednesday evening into Thursday, splintering homes and overturning a semi-truck on an interstate. The National Weather Service’s (NWS) Storm Prediction Center (SPC) said there were preliminary reports of 26 tornadoes throughout the day Wednesday across the Southern Plains, with the number likely to go up as the severe weather moves across Mississippi on Thursday. “We had over two dozen reports of tornadoes, one of them proving fatal in Oklahoma last night,” Fox News senior meteorologist Janice Dean said on “Fox & Friends.”

New Israeli Government Will Be the Largest in Country’s History

The new Israeli government that will emerge from the unity government deal signed Monday by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Benny Gantz is ultimately expected have up to 36 cabinet ministers and up to 16 deputy ministers, making it the largest in the country’s history. That poses a special challenge for Netanyahu’s main coalition partner, Gantz’s Kahol Lavan party, which only has 15 Knesset members, most of whom will become cabinet ministers, leaving almost none of the remaining members to be appointed to Knesset committees. The coalition agreement signed Monday provides for the heads of 32 ministries to be divided equally between Netanyahu’s Likud party, on one hand, and Kahol Lavan and its Labor party ally on the other. It also states that the Likud and Kahol Lavan are entitled to share their cabinet slots with any other parties that they bring into the coalition government.

Israeli Special Services Thwart Terrorist Attack on Jerusalem Stadium

The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) said on Wednesday that a terrorist attack at Jerusalem’s Teddy stadium had been prevented with the help of the country’s military and police. “The General Security Service in collaboration with the Israeli armed forces and the police thwarted the plans of a Hamas group cell that had been planning terrorist attacks in Jerusalem, including at Teddy stadium, as well as against the IDF forces [Israel Defense Forces] in Ramallah and Binyamin district,” Shin Bet said. According to the press release, three Palestinian suspects were arrested in March. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has praised the work of the special services. “I am grateful to Shin Bet, the armed forces and police for thwarting the attack at Teddy stadium. Perfect job. We are constantly fighting against terrorism,” Netanyahu said on Twitter. According to the special service, the investigation revealed that the suspects had tried to create an explosive device following instructions downloaded from the Internet, and even bought various chemicals, nails and metal tools for this. The suspects, however, were arrested before they could assemble the explosive device.

  Syria reports Israeli airstrike on targets in Homs province

Syrian state media on Monday night reported that air defenses were activated  against Israeli missiles over the ancient city of Palmyra in the Homs province. The reports claimed missiles were shot down. “Air defenses confronted an Israeli aggression over Palmyra and intercepted several hostile missiles,” SANA said. The missiles were downed before they could hit their targets, it added. Syria media regularly claims alleged Israeli strikes fail to hit their targets, though those assertions are questionable. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a Britain-based war monitor, said the targets were “military posts for Iranian militias in the Palmyra desert.” The monitor did not report any casualties. The latest alleged attack came only hours after Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif met with Assad in Damascus to discuss regional developments in light of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus.

Turkey warns Syria of ‘very heavy losses’ if truce violated

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused Syrian government forces of “accelerating its aggression” in the Idlib de-escalation zone by taking advantage of the coronavirus pandemic. “Turkey will protect its commitment to the March 5 agreement reached with Russia, and will not allow the aggression of the regime,” Erdogan said at a cabinet meeting late on Monday. Turkey and Russia, which back opposing sides in Syria’s war, agreed on March 5 to halt hostilities in northwestern Syria after an escalation of violence there displaced nearly a million people and brought the two sides close to confrontation. “If the regime, which violates the ceasefire and other conditions of agreement, continues like this, it will pay for it with very heavy losses,” he said. “Our government continues to be focused on the coronavirus challenge at home and abroad but we are also working on foreign policy matters such as those in Syria, Libya and the Aegean Sea,” said Altun. “As President Erdogan indicated, the Syrian regime is trying to take advantage of the situation.” Altun also stressed Turkey stands by the March 5 agreement with Russia and is determined not to allow Syrian government “aggression” in Idlib despite provocations.

 Second night of riots erupt in Paris as residents accuse ‘racist’ police of attacking minorities during coronavirus lockdown

Paris has seen a second night of riots break out over police ‘heavy-handed’ treatment of ethnic minorities during the coronavirus lockdown. Anger erupted in the French capital last night and during the early hours of Monday morning over alleged ‘racist’ police attacks. In response, police used tear gas and baton charges in Villeneuve-la-Garenne, northern Paris, on Monday morning as fireworks exploded in the street. Armed police were seen moving through the area as groups of protesters congregated. Fireworks were again seen being launched at police last night as heavily armed riot police took to the streets of Paris. It comes after a 30-year-old was critically injured in the neighbourhood in a collision with an unmarked police car.

Trump instructs Navy to destroy Iranian gunboats ‘if they harass our ships’

“I have instructed the United States Navy to shoot down and destroy any and all Iranian gunboats if they harass our ships at sea,” President Donald Trump tweeted on Wednesday. The warning comes a week after 11 boats of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard’s Navy sped close to U.S. ships in the Persian Gulf. IRGCN vessels repeatedly “crossed the bows and sterns” of four Navy and two Coast Guard ships in the Persian Gulf as they were conducting joint operations with U.S. Army AH-64E Apache attack helicopters, the U.S. 5th Fleet reported. Only after an hour of ignoring multiple bridge-to-bridge radio and sound warnings did the Iranian ships finally back off. Trump’s announcement came shortly after Iran announced on Wednesday that it had successfully launched a military satellite into space.

Mozambique villagers ‘massacred’ by Islamists

The police say that the villagers in Cabo Delgado province were “massacred”, with some beheaded, after some people refused to be recruited into the militant group. The attack took place in the village of Xitaxi in Muidumbe district on 7 April but only came to light late on Tuesday. “Recently, the criminals tried to recruit young people to join their ranks, but there was resistance on the part of the youths. This provoked the anger of the criminals, who indiscriminately killed – cruelly and diabolically – 52 young people,” police spokesman Orlando Mudumane told state media. The timing and context of the police statement may be significant. The so-called Islamic State group – which has sought to take credit for recent insurgent attacks in northern Mozambique – has just put out a video claiming responsibility for the downing of a military helicopter in the region. The helicopter is reported to belong to one of several foreign security companies allegedly hired by the Mozambique government to support its counter-insurgency operations in Cabo Delgado province. There is speculation that the Mozambique authorities are now highlighting the 7 April incident in order to deflect attention from what is widely considered a propaganda coup for IS, which is actively seeking to build “franchise” operations in conflict zones across Africa.

Australia Joins U.S. Navy to Patrol Disputed South China Sea amid Rising Tensions

Three U.S. warships in the South China Sea have been joined by a frigate supplied by ally Australia to patrol an area where a Chinese vessel is suspected to be illegally exploring for oil, officials said Wednesday. The move came two days after China’s Ministry of Civil Affairs and Ministry of Natural Resources released “standard” names for 80 geographical features in the resource-rich South China Sea, in an act claimed to be “reaffirming China’s sovereignty in the region.” The U.S. supports Asian nations blocked by China from exercising control over their lawful territory by regularly sending warships and aircraft to operate in the contested areas. Most recently, the U.S. sent two military aircraft to fly near Taiwan on April 13 after China conducted military drills in and around Taiwanese waters and airspace. Now the U.S. Navy has confirmed the USS America amphibious assault ship and the USS Bunker Hill, a guided missile cruiser, were also operating in the South China Sea. They were joined by Australia’s frigate HMAS Parramatta and a third U.S. vessel, the destroyer USS Barry, as part of a planned joint exercise, the Australian defence department said. The U.S. Navy also confirmed the deployment of its assets.

The Senate’s passage of a $484 billion coronavirus relief bill on Tuesday is setting the stage for negotiations on an even bigger package that could rival the $2.2 trillion CARES Act passed by Congress last month. The legislation would funnel tens of billions if not hundreds of billions to state and local governments and could address infrastructure spending and election security. Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) on Tuesday called for Congress to begin thinking about “CARES 2” after the Senate deal, while Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) warned of the growing amount of debt the U.S. is adding, previewing the battle to come. Speaking to reporters, Schumer said “we will need a big strong and active Covid-4. It’ll have to come very soon. The needs are large and great.” But McConnell hit the pause button. “I think it’s also time to begin to think about the amount of debt we’re adding to our country and the future impact of that,” he said. “Let’s weigh this very carefully because the future of our country in terms of the amount of debt that we’re adding up is a matter of genuine concern.”

Oil Plunges Below Zero for First Time in Unprecedented Wipeout

Of all the wild, unprecedented swings in financial markets since the coronavirus pandemic broke out, none has been more jaw-dropping than Monday’s collapse in a key segment of U.S. oil trading. The price on the futures contract for West Texas crude that is due to expire Tuesday fell into negative territory — minus $37.63 a barrel. The reason: with the pandemic bringing the economy to a standstill, there is so much unused oil sloshing around that American energy companies have run out of room to store it. And if there’s no place to put the oil, no one wants a crude contract that is about to come due. Underscoring just how acute the concern is over the lack of immediate storage space, the price on the futures contract due a month later settled at $20.43 per barrel. That gap between the two contracts is by far the biggest ever. “The May crude oil contract is going out not with a whimper, but a primal scream,” said Daniel Yergin, a Pulitzer Prize-winning oil historian and vice chairman of IHS Markit Ltd.

France Calls on Apple and Google to Ditch Privacy Protections During Pandemic

France has become the first country in the world to openly call on Silicon Valley tech giants to remove privacy protections during the Chinese coronavirus pandemic, in order to introduce a “sovereign European health solution” that would track the movements of citizens. The French government is aiming to unveil a contact tracing app by May 11th, when the country is expected to ease national lockdown measures that were introduced in March. France and the European Union as a whole have come out in favour of a centralised approach to the tracking of citizens, in which data would be stored in government servers and monitored by state health services. Currently, Apple’s operating system would prevent such an approach, as its Bluetooth function prohibits constant background tracking if the data is to be moved off the device. France claims that this privacy protection would prevent the government from developing its contact tracing app. “We’re asking Apple to lift the technical hurdle to allow us to develop a sovereign European health solution that will be tied our health system,” France’s digital minister, Cédric O, told Bloomberg News. The system being developed by Google and Apple, which is set to be made available worldwide next month, will take a decentralised approach to tracking, with the data remaining on a user’s phone rather than being collected in a central server.

Lutherans Publish New Version of Bible Without the Word ‘Israel’ in It

A recently published translation of the New Testament has one glaring omission: it has excised all references to the place and the people of the Bible. 24NYT, a Danish news service, reported on Sunday that the Danish Bible Society just published a revised translation of the New Testament. The new edition has many surprises, including a new name: the New Agreement. But even more shocking is that the “New Agreement has all but removed any references to  Israel, whether it describes the land or the people. The new edition was reviewed by Jan Frost on YouTube who reported that the word ‘Israel’ is only used once in the “Bible 2020”, which is the name of the new edition. In all other passages, the word ‘Israel’ is either replaced with ‘Jews’, ‘the land of the Jews, or not replaced with any alternative term. Frost reported that the publishers justified the change by claiming that the ‘Israel’ referred to in the Bible is not the same as Israel today. Frost noted that this explanation does not apply to the term ‘Egypt’ which remains in the Bible 2020 despite ancient Egypt having significantly different borders and ethnic composition than modern Egypt.

 Islamists Severely Beat Christian Woman with Sticks in Eastern Uganda

Islamic radicals severely beat 23-year-old Lydia Nabirye in Eastern Uganda, after the woman shared her Christian faith with a Muslim woman who subsequently converted to Christianity. Morning Star News reported Monday both Ms. Nabirye and the young woman who converted from Islam to Christianity received beatings. The Christian convert, who is pregnant and preferred to remain anonymous, sustained serious injuries as a result of the assault. Nabirye, the daughter of a Church of God evangelist, offered refuge to the young convert in her home after Muslim family members of the woman threatened her. Six other former Muslims are also staying with her after receiving similar threats. The beating of Ms. Nabirye occurred on April 7 when she went to console another former Muslim who was mourning the loss of a son who had died and Muslims saw her entering the property. Nabirye was attacked by a band of radical Muslims while she was walking back to her village. One witness to the assault said that the Muslims ambushed, strangled, and severely beat Nabirye. Neighbors called the police when they heard the woman screaming and the attackers fled the scene when police arrived, he said.

Governors who impose rules to deal with the coronavirus pandemic that infringe on constitutional rights can expect to face legal action, warned Attorney General William Barr. In an interview Tuesday on “The Hugh Hewitt Show,”  Barr urged states to enact targeted measures, citing President Trump’s guidelines. “We have to give businesses more freedom to operate in a way that’s reasonably safe,” Barr said. “To the extent that governors don’t and impinge on either civil rights or on the national commerce – our common market that we have here – then we’ll have to address that.” Barr said the Justice Department could joins lawsuits by citizens or businesses against restrictions. He said that as “specific cases emerge in the states, we’ll take a look at them.” “We’re looking carefully at a number of these rules that are being put into place,” Barr said. “And if we think one goes too far, we initially try to jawbone the governors into rolling them back or adjusting them. And if they’re not and people bring lawsuits, we file statement of interest and side with the plaintiffs.”

Historic drought in Chile enters 10th year — the country’s longest dry spell on record

A severe drought in Chile’s central region is entering its 10^th year, setting a record for the country’s longest dry-spell ever. Records since 1915, when the nation started data-keeping, showed that no droughts have lasted longer and that the previous megadrought of this scale likely occurred more than 1 000 years ago. Over the past 10 years, rainfall in central Chile has been below normal every year by an average of 20 to 45 percent, which is extremely low. Around the capital Santiago (population 7 million), lack of rain has been particularly severe. Between 2014 and 2019, only 10 to 20 percent of normal rainfall has been recorded. In 2019, the greater Santiago area in Valparaiso saw rainfall almost 80 percent below the previous record low. It was down by 90 percent in the northern region of Coquimbo. According to Rene D. Garreaud, a scientist at the University of Chile, they are estimating that the last ‘megadrought’ of this scale probably occurred in this region more than 1 000 years ago.

 Mississippi tornado rated as EF-4 — the fourth EF-4 in 2020, the most fatal tornado year since 2012

The National Weather Service (NWS) has rated the tornado that struck Mississippi over the weekend as EF-4. This is the third violent tornado in the area within just a week, and the fourth EF-4 tornado in 2020, making this year one with the most EF-4 tornadoes since 2014. The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) has released its initial storm reports, confirming one fatality and more than 80 properties partially or totally damaged. So far this year, tornadoes in the United States caused 67 fatalities, making it the most fatal individual tornado year since 2012. On Sunday, April 19, 2020, an outbreak of severe weather spawned tornadoes and strong winds across wide swaths of the Deep South. A 70-year-old man died in Marion County, Mississippi, after his house took a direct hit from the storm, Coroner Jessie Graham reported. Another person sustained injuries. According to NWS’s damage survey, the tornado began at around 00:10 UTC on April 20 (19:10 LT on April 19), over southeastern Walthall County, in a field west of Reagan Road.

   Iran shows off drones that can reach Israel, threat increases

Iran’s Defense Ministry unveiled a mass of new drones over the weekend for the Islamic Republic’s army and air force. According to Tehran the drones have new capabilities, and can fly more than 1,000 km., which means they could reach Israel from Iran. Iran’s Defense Minister Brig.-Gen. Amir Hatami showed off the drones on Saturday. He said that one jet-powered UAV could fly at speeds of 900 km. per hour at an altitude of 12,000 meters. This would rival the best drones that the US and other countries are now using. These drones have a range of up to 1,500 km., he said, and can fly for several hours. It is a message to Israel, the US and their allies: We can reach you. The new drones allegedly have some sort of guided missile or smart bomb ordnance.

Netanyahu-Gantz meeting ends with no agreement

No unity agreement was made between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Blue and White head Benny Gantz after a 90-minute meeting at the prime minister’s residence in Jerusalem on Monday. Reports suggested that Gantz and Netanyahu disagreed over the Judiciary Committee. A source involved in the negotiations between the two parties told Ynet early Monday morning that an agreement could be signed and that the negotiation teams spoke throughout the night and arrived to an agreement concerning the prime ministerial rotation between Gantz and Netanyahu. “The matter is dependent now on the will of Netanyahu to do it,” the source told Ynet. The meeting on Monday was meant to attempt to bridge other disagreements holding up negotiations.  A Likud statement after the meeting said, “Efforts for unity are still ongoing with the intention of forming a national emergency government as soon as possible.”

   Israel accuses Hezbollah of ‘provocative’ activity

In a statement, Foreign Minister Israel Katz accused Hezbollah of multiple attempts to breach the border Friday night. He said Israel “thoroughly condemns” the incident and expects the Lebanese government to prevent such threats. On Friday night, the Israeli military fired flares along the volatile frontier after signs of a possible border breach. It said it later found damage to the separation fence in three locations. There was no immediate comment from the Iranian-backed militant group.

 Protests flared in U.S. states on Sunday over stay-at-home orders while governors disputed President Donald Trump’s claims they have enough tests for the novel coronavirus and should quickly reopen their economies. An estimated 2,500 people rallied at the Washington state capitol in Olympia to protest Democratic Governor Jay Inslee’s stay-at-home order, defying a ban on gatherings of 50 or more people. “These people love our country,” Trump, who has touted a thriving economy as the best case for his re-election in November, told a briefing in Washington on Sunday. “They want to get back to work.” In New York, the U.S. epicentre of the pandemic, hospitalizations continued decline to 16,000 from a high of 18,000, and the number of patients being kept alive by ventilators also fell. There were 507 new deaths from COVID-19, the respiratory illness caused by the coronavirus, down from a high of more than 700 a day. “If the data holds and if this trend holds, we are past the high point and all indications at this point are that we are on a descent,” Governor Andrew Cuomo said at a daily briefing, while urging residents to continue social distancing.

As trillions upon trillions of euro-dollars and bailout money are willed into existence to cushion the coronavirus blow, the risk of another financial meltdown and hyperinflation has never been greater. Right now, everyone is preoccupied with the health aspect of the crisis and dealing with the immediate situation at hand. However, while the virus will come and (hopefully) go, the consequences of rampant money printing with zero limits could have disastrous effects in and of itself given enough time. Indeed, as central banks like the US Federal Reserve, the European Central Bank and the People’s Bank of China (PBC) go on an unlimited spending spree to quell expectations of social unrest – mostly as a result of joblessness – basic goods and things in general are gearing up for massive price hikes. The possibility for full digital ownership of your own capital has existed for over a decade, and has come with the bonus of proving to be quite lucrative against the euro-dollar system. This confluence of reasons to park money in bitcoin and crypto will make for an easy choice. And while we’re not there yet, the coming months are going to give people the opportunity to compare hard money which cannot be debased or censored, and fiat money which will prove to be worthless in comparison. Welcome to the new world.

Italy’s Conte Calls for Joint Bonds Ahead of EU Summit Clash

Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte joined a chorus of Southern European nations calling for the issuance of as much as 1.5 trillion euros ($1.6 trillion) of joint bonds to aid economies crippled by the coronavirus, setting the stage for a clash at a European Union summit this week. Conte evoked the risk of market contagion if European leaders fail to act on pressure from Italy and Spain, according to a Sunday interview with Germany’s Sueddeutsche Zeitung. His words echo a warning from French President Emmanuel Macron last week that it’s necessary for the EU to “issue common debt with a common guarantee,” and that failure to rise to the occasion would lead to the bloc’s collapse.

Oil futures contract expiring Tuesday dives 38% as pandemic ravages demand, June contract falls 11%

‘Negative prices are possible’: Crude collapses 22% in world awash with oil

U.S. crude prices plunged on Monday as traders continue to fret over a slump in demand due to the coronavirus pandemic. The price of the nearest oil futures contract, which expires Tuesday, was the hardest hit, detaching from later month futures contracts with a drop of more than 20%. West Texas Intermediate crude for May delivery tanked 39%, or $7.09, to $11.25 per barrel, its lowest level in more than 20 years. Meanwhile, international benchmark Brent crude futures traded 6.4% lower at $26.29 per barrel. The June WTI contract, which expires on May 19, fell more than 11% to $22.07 per barrel. The July contract was off by 5% to about $28. The front part of the oil futures ‘curve,’ which is the May contract that expires on Tuesday, was hit the hardest since it applies to fuel that’s set to be delivered while most of the country remains on lockdown thanks to the coronavirus. There’s little demand for gasoline from refineries, and storage tanks in the U.S. are nearing their limits.

The BoE has issued a public discussion paper in March that kicked off a three-month period that included a public webinar with live polls last week for stakeholders and ongoing discussions with experts around the world in digital currencies, monetary policy, and distributed ledger technology. The United Kingdom’s central bank takes a risk even in suggesting the idea of a CBDC, However, with cash use on the decline and the increase of private money digital currencies such as Facebook’s Libra entering the marketplace, the Bank of England grows concerned that its mission of maintaining monetary and financial stability will be impacted by these developments.

  GOP lawmakers introduce bill to allow Americans to sue China over coronavirus

Two Republican lawmakers in the House and Senate, respectively, have introduced legislation that would allow Americans to sue the Chinese government for damages caused by the coronavirus pandemic — which U.S. officials have blamed on the Chinese.  The bill, introduced by Rep. Dan Crenshaw, R-Texas, in the House and Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., in the Senate, would allow Americans to sue the communist country in federal court by amending the Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. The legislation is modeled after the Justice Against Sponsors of Terrorism Act, and seeks “to provide a civil action against a foreign state for deliberate concealment or distortion of information with respect to an international public health emergency.”

  US gives $5 million in coronavirus aid to Palestinian Authority

The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it will give the Palestinian Authority (PA) $5 million to help fight the coronavirus. “I am very pleased that the United States is providing $5 million for hospitals and Palestinians to meet the immediate and vital needs of the fight against COVID-19,” tweeted U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman. “The United States, as the largest donor of aid, pledged to help the Palestinian people, and others around the world, in this crisis,” he added. As of Thursday, 229 residents of the PA-administered areas of Judea and Samaria have been infected with the coronavirus and two have died, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. In March 2018, the Senate passed the Taylor Force Act into law, which stops American financial support to the PA as long as it continues to pay salaries to convicted terrorists and deceased terrorists’ families. The State Department announced in September 2018 that the U.S. – the largest contributor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), giving $350 million in annual aid – will make slash all funding to the agency until it stops supporting terror. Both the U.S. and Israel accuse UNRWA  of perpetuating the Israeli-Palestinian conflict by supporting a school curriculum that promotes anti-Semitism and hatred of Israel in its classrooms and for assisting terrorists.

 Rivlin sets August 4 as date for fourth elections if unity govt not formed

President Reuven Rivlin has set August 4 as the date for an unthinkable round of fourth elections should the Likud and Blue and White fail to form a unity government, as negotiations between the two sides was deadlocked Thursday night. Negotiations between the two parties have been stuck over the Likud’s demands to pass legislation to protect Netanyahu from possible rulings by the High Court of Justice which might invalidate him either as prime minister or later as deputy prime minister due to his criminal indictments. Rivlin’s office released a political timetable earlier on Thursday, laying out May 7 as the date by which an MK must be tasked by the Knesset with forming a government, May 8 as the date for informing the Knesset speaker as such, and August 4 as the date for the next election, allowing for a three month campaign. Despite the rapidly dwindling time for forming a government, Likud and Blue and White seemed no closer to a deal Thursday evening. If the talks fail, there is also little expectation that a single member of the Knesset will garner the 61 signatures needed of MKs to avoid another vote. In light of the impasse, Blue and White indicated that if no agreement is reached by Monday, the party will advance legislation to prevent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu from serving as prime minister.

   Russia clashes with Europeans over Syria chemical weapons

Syria’s close ally Russia clashed with European nations in the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday over a report from the global chemical weapons watchdog blaming the Syrian air force for a series of attacks using sarin and chlorine on a rebel-held town in 2017. Moscow dismissed it as “baseless” and the Europeans demanded accountability for the government’s action. An investigative team of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons said in a 82-page report issued April 8 that the Syrian air force dropped bombs containing either chlorine or sarin on a hospital and open farmland in the central town of Latamneh, injuring over 70 people and killing at least three — a surgeon and two others. When the report came out, a Syrian Foreign Ministry official, quoted on state media, said “Syria condemns in the strongest terms what was stated in the report,” and “categorically denies that it used toxic gases in the town of Latamneh or in any other Syrian city or village.” Russia’s U.N. Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told the council that all of Syria’s chemical weapons were destroyed and accused the OPCW experts of “echoing baseless accusations” by some unnamed countries, “biases,” and preparing a report “without even the slightest traces of due diligence.”

Hundreds in Tel Aviv Turn Out Over Police Curbs on Protests During the Coronavirus Crisis

Across the U.S., protests against the stay-at-home orders health experts say are needed to save lives are taking place, with more set for the coming days. This week, about 100 protesters gathered outside the Ohio statehouse in Columbus to push for Republican Gov. Mike DeWine to reopen the state. In Raleigh, more than 100 demonstrators gathered to protest Democratic North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper’s stay-at-home order, where at least one protester was charged with violating the order. In New York, a few dozen people gathered Thursday outside the state Capitol to rally for returning to normal. Kentucky, Utah and Wyoming also saw similar. More events are scheduled for Pennsylvania, Virginia, Texas, Oregon, Idaho and Washington state. The largest took place in Michigan on Thursday, where police said between 3,000 and 4,000 people showed up at the state Capitol in Lansing to protest Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s extended and expanded stay-at-home order, which was signed into law last week. The stay-at-home measures have reignited — amidst a global pandemic — an age-old U.S. debate over government regulation vs. personal liberty. Across the country, states have implemented restrictive measures with the aim of saving lives.

Report: China may be testing nuclear weapons, US State Dept. says

A new arms-control report from the U.S. State Department raises concerns that the Chinese military has been conducting nuclear weapons tests in violation of an unratified international accord barring all nuclear tests. The coming report does not present proof that China has violated the “zero-yield” nuclear-weapons testing ban, but it does show patterns of activity that suggest nuclear testing is taking place. An executive summary of the report list notes extensive excavations at China’s Lop Nur test site, suggesting the construction of chambers to contain blasts. Such observations may suggest the development of nuclear weapons with very low explosive power. The central issue at the heart of the report concerns the 1996 Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty. While the treaty has not met the criteria for ratification, China and the U.S. have both claimed they are abiding by its terms. Another concerning trend said to be included in the State Department assessment is an interruption in the flow of radioactive and seismic data collected in monitoring stations in Chinese territory. The monitoring stations are part of an international network to provide data to prove compliance in the nuclear test ban agreement. The stations are to be maintained by the participating nations and have voluntarily shared data with the Vienna-based Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization.

  For The First Time Ever, The Fed Will Monetize Double The Total Treasury Issuance

While daytraders look transfixed at a stock market which continues to surge higher even as the US has lost around 22 million jobs in the past month alone, something far more nefarious is taking place behind the scenes: the Fed is nationalizing (or privatizing, depending on whether one views the Fed as a public, or a private – which it actually is – entity) the entire capital market at a pace unseen before in history. the current pace of weekly Treasury purchases is simply staggering, unparalleled by anything seen before in history. It’s not just the Fed: with QE officially back (and not in the cute “Not-QE” variant, but full blown global debt monetization), every single central bank is now actively injecting billions of liquidity into the stock market. At the peak in late March, the Fed was buying $75bn in Treasuries every day, and we are now down to “only” $30bn per day” These enormous Fed purchases combined with rates moving sideways in recent weeks make you wonder where 10-year rates would have been if the Fed had not intervened. As the Fed gradually steps away over the coming weeks, and Treasury issuance continues to increase to finance the fiscal stimulus, the market will be focusing more and more on demand and supply in the US Treasury market. And as we ride into the sunset of US monetary supremacy and into the gaping chasm of economic, financial and fiscal turmoil now that helicopter money has been unleashed without anyone apparently realizing what has just happened, we highlight the following chart, also from Slok, which lays out succinctly what it now takes to avoid a full-blown fiscal crisis: a Fed which is monetizing twice the Treasury’s net issuance.

    Airline conducts COVID-19 blood tests on passengers

How Coronavirus Is Eroding Privacy

One airline is now administering blood tests to passengers before they board flights amid the coronavirus pandemic, it announced on Wednesday. Emirates said this week that on a Wednesday flight to Tunisia from Dubai, passengers “were all tested for COVID-19” before departing by way of blood tests conducted by the Dubai Health Authority at the airport’s check-in area, and “results were available within 10 minutes.” Emirates called itself the first airline to conduct on-site rapid COVID-19 tests on its passengers. These blood tests are in addition to other precautions the airline has taken, such as requiring passengers to wear masks. CNN notes that “serology (blood) tests aren’t meant to diagnose active coronavirus infections,” but they “check for proteins in the immune system, known as antibodies, through a blood sample,” and “their presence means a person was exposed to the virus and developed antibodies against it.” But this, CNN also observes, may be “a sign of what the future holds for air travelers,” while NPR describes it as potentially “a step toward making air travel palatable to the public again.” The airline is hoping to expand this practice, as Emirates Chief Operating Officer Adel Al Redha said in a statement, “We are working on plans to scale up testing capabilities in the future and extend it to other flights.”

‘New globalization should secure its benefits and cure its ills’

Matthew Rooney, the Managing Director of the George W. Bush Institute, says that globalization of the American economy is the answer to coronavirus, and shouldn’t been seen as the problem. “Our top priority must be the health and safety of our families, our neighbors, and our national community”, Rooney wrote in an op-ed published on the Institute’s website, “We must be prepared to do what it takes to “flatten the curve” of infection, and to spend what it takes to prevent economic collapse”. “But when the crisis is over”, he writes, “and we have defeated the virus and people are back at work and we are all able to go out for dinner again, we must be ready to come together around a new strategy for globalization that secures its benefits and cures its ills”. Rooney concludes: “It will take American leadership and political will, but we know what needs to be done and have successfully met greater challenges in the past”.

Libra overhauls core parts of its digital currency vision

The Facebook-led digital currency project Libra has announced a drastic downgrading of the scope of its initial vision, overhauling several elements of the project in an attempt to placate global regulators. On Thursday, the 22-strong Libra Association, which lost a flurry of high-profile members last year over concerns that the initiative might hurt monetary stability or facilitate money-laundering, unveiled a substantially diminished “Libra 2.0”, designed to appease wary regulators. It added that it was still aiming to launch by the end of 2020.  In particular, the association outlined plans to offer a set of digital versions of single currencies, such as a Libra dollar or a Libra euro, that would be fully backed one to one by cash or cash equivalents, plus support from a capital buffer. It also said it would support central bank digital currencies, as central banks continue to circle the space.  The shift follows a backlash from US watchdogs over its initial proposals to create a synthetic coin backed by a basket of currencies, which prompted concerns about foreign exchange risks and raised questions as to how such a basket would be weighted. Libra said it was still aiming to create a “multi-coin currency”, though this would be a “digital composite” of some of its existing single-currency coins.

“There is increasing confidence that COVID-19 likely originated in a Wuhan laboratory,” Fox News’ Bret Baier reported on Wednesday evening. The news reinvigorates early theories that the coronavirus pandemic began in a Wuhan lab. Sources told Fox News that evidence points to the Wuhan Institute of Virology, based on “classified and open-source documents and evidence.” The Daily Mail similarly reported that “The Wuhan lab was originally set up with assistance from the French and American governments, but in recent years the Chinese have rebuffed international assistance there and tried to prove their ability to work independently.” Safety procedures were sloppy at the lab. U.S. Embassy officials warned in January 2018 about poor safety protocols, noting in particular risky studies linked with coronavirus pathogens in bats, The Washington Post reported on Wednesday. The Fox report noted that the sources stressed that the intelligence isn’t definite. “Some inside the administration and the intelligence and epidemiological communities are more skeptical, and the investigation is continuing,” the report said. Until now, it was generally accepted that a wet market located a few miles from the lab, where exotic creatures are sold for human consumption, was the source of the disease. Bats in particular were to blame. However, the wet market in Wuhan that was pinpointed, the Huanan Wholesale Seafood Market, didn’t sell bats. Sources told Fox News that the Chinese government blamed the wet market “to deflect blame from the laboratory.” It might be the “costliest government coverup of all time,” one source told Fox News.

Worst Megadrought in Centuries Emerging in U.S., Scientists Warn

Climatologists have been predicting megadrought in the western United States and northern Mexico but it seems to have already begun, scientists suggest in Science on Thursday. While the combination of natural circumstances could have caused a megadrought at this time anyway, this one – exacerbated by global warming – could be the worst in thousands of years, the team warns. The study by Park Williams, Edward Cook, Jason Smerdon, Kasey Bolles and Seung Hun Baek, of Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory; John Abatzoglou of the University of Idaho; and Andrew Badger and Ben Livneh of the University of Colorado, Boulder, is based on weather observations, tree-ring data going back 1,200 years and dozens of climate models. “Earlier studies were largely model projections of the future,” Williams says. “We’re no longer looking at projections, but at where we are now. We now have enough observations of current drought and tree-ring records of past drought to say that we’re on the same trajectory as the worst prehistoric droughts.” The new study is based on dendrochronological data from thousands of trees in nine U.S. states, from Oregon and Montana down through California and New Mexico, and part of northern Mexico, starting 1,200 years ago. The researchers detected the four megadroughts lasting decades: in the late ninth century, 12th century, 13th century and 16th century. As for the drought conditions today, the team didn’t need tree rings: we have records going back to 1901. They calculated drought severity from 2000 to 2018 using a soil-moisture model.

   Forecasters predict a very active 2020 Atlantic hurricane season

The Atlantic hurricane season is likely to be very active, fueled by very warm ocean temperatures in the tropics, according to several forecasts including a report released April 16 by The Weather Channel. A total of 18 named storms — nine of them hurricanes — are predicted in the season starting June 1, according to the Atlanta-based weather forecasting company, which is owned by IBM. That’s higher than the seasonal average of 12 named storms, including six hurricanes, determined by the U.S. National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration. Four of the hurricanes forecast by the Weather Channel are expected to be “major hurricanes” of Category 3 or higher, with sustained winds of at least 178 kilometers per hour (111 miles per hour). Other researchers have also predicted above-normal activity for the year, including forecasters at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and the University of Arizona in Tucson, as well as a consortium of risk experts known as Tropical Storm Risk at University College London.

Israel’s Netanyahu, Gantz Say Near Unity Deal to End Political Deadlock

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and political rival Benny Gantz were nearing a deal on Tuesday to form a national emergency government to battle the coronavirus crisis and end the country’s unprecedented political deadlock. Gantz’s 28-day mandate to put together a ruling coalition after last month’s inconclusive election was due to expire at midnight, but President Reuven Rivlin, who is overseeing the coalition talks, extended it for two days. Rivlin did so, his office said, “on the understanding that they are very close to reaching an agreement.” Gantz and Netanyahu met overnight in an effort to settle their differences, after which the sides said they had made “significant progress.” A second meeting on Tuesday ended with a joint statement saying the negotiating teams would resume talks on Wednesday evening, hours before the new deadline.

Israel targets Hezbollah vehicle near Syria-Lebanon border

An Israeli drone targeted a car carrying forces from Iran-backed Hezbollah in Syria near the Lebanese border, a commander in the pro-Damascus regional alliance and a security source said. Sky News Arabia reported the targeted vehicle was carrying a commander belonging to the Lebanese terror group. Pictures from the scene of the attack showed the remains of the burned down vehicle covered by a doormat. This method of covering tacks is widely used by Hezbollah fighters in order to avoid being detected by spy drones. Over the recent days, Israel has increased its presence in the Lebanese and Syrian airspace. Hezbollah has not commented on the incident. In the meantime, on Tuesday evening an Iranian military plane was detected flying over Iraq on its way to Tehran. The plane’s altitude and trajectory would indicate it was coming back from Damascus.

Gun battle erupts in Cairo between security forces, fighters

A gun battle has erupted in Egypt’s capital, Cairo, between security forces and members of a “terrorist group”, according to state television. The exchange of gunfire on Tuesday took place in the al-Amiriyah district. A security source told AFP news agency that a policeman succumbed to his wounds following the shoot-out. Another officer was also hospitalised. “Initial investigations show that the suspects were planning to carry out terrorist acts,” a separate security source was quoted as saying by Reuters news agency. The source added that explosives and weapons were found with the suspects.

  Coronavirus stay-at-home orders stir protests nationwide amid fears of economic collapse

At least 15,000 cars and trucks are expected to descend on Michigan’s state capital on Wednesday to protest what they’re calling Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s tyrannical new guidelines to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus in the state. “Quarantine is when you restrict movement of sick people. Tyranny is when you restrict the movement of healthy people,” Meshawn Maddock, an organizer of the protest with the Michigan Conservative Coalition, told Fox News. “Every person has learned a harsh lesson about social distancing. We don’t need a nanny state to tell people how to be careful.” The protest – called “Operation Gridlock” – would be just one of a number of demonstrations of civil disobedience around the country by Americans upset with their state’s stay-at-home orders amid the pandemic. While the contagion has infected over 568,000 Americans and killed over 23,000, according to the latest estimates, protestors from North Carolina to Wyoming said they’ve been just as concerned with the economic and financial impact the coronavirus has inflicted on the country – echoing President Trump’s complaint that “the cure be worse than the problem.” Alex Berenson, a former New York Times reporter who has been sounding the alarm about what he believes are flawed models dictating the aggressive strategy, drew attention to the protests in North Carolina, as well as a social media uproar in Michigan.

North Korea fires ‘barrage’ of missiles, South Korea says

North Korea has carried out a several different missile tests Tuesday, according to the  South Korean military.

South Korean military officials assessed North Korea fired missiles from both the ground and from airborne fighter jets, Fox News reported. The launches likely come as a show of force on the eve of North Korean founder Kim Il Sung’s 108th birthday, as well as a distraction ahead of South Korea’s upcoming parliamentary elections. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff assessed the first string of missile launches were fired off by North Korean troops in Munchonto and were presumed to be cruise missiles. The missiles reportedly splashed down 93 miles off the Korean coast. Later missile tests were carried out by North Korean fighter jets. An unknown number of suspected air-to-surface missiles were launched into the same waters off the Korean coast.

U.S. Military Planes Fly near Taiwan After China Threatens ‘Military Struggle’

Two United States military aircraft reportedly flew close to Taipei’s southern airspace on Monday, the Taipei Times said. The newspaper, citing flight charts posted on Twitter, identified a U.S. RC-135W Rivet Joint and a Lockheed P-3 Orion in the airspace north of the South China Sea. Aircraft Spots, a military air movement tracker, posted the images. The two planes flew at different intervals, with the RC-135W reconnaissance plane spotted first over the Bashi Channel, southwest of Taiwan, according to the flight charts. The Bashi Channel connects the South China Sea with the western Pacific Ocean and runs between Taiwan and the Philippines.  Oil market falls too big to offset with output cuts, IEA warns

The International Energy Agency (IEA) on Wednesday forecast a 29 million barrel per day (bpd) dive in April oil demand to levels not seen in 25 years and warned no output cut by producers could fully offset the near-term falls facing the market. Benchmark Brent crude futures LCOc1 fell following the IEA’s monthly report, trading down more than 4% or $1.30 to $28.30 per barrel at 1027 GMT. The IEA forecast a 9.3 million bpd drop in demand for 2020 despite what it called a “solid start” by producers following a record deal to curb supply in response to the coronavirus pandemic. “By lowering the peak of the supply overhang and flattening the curve of the build-up in stocks, they help a complex system absorb the worst of this crisis,” the Paris-based IEA said in its monthly report.

 Doing “whatever it takes” to save the global economy from the coronavirus pandemic is going to cost a lot of money. The U.S. government alone is spending a few trillion dollars, and the Federal Reserve is creating another few trillion dollars to keep the financial system from collapsing. A custom Bloomberg index measuring M2 figures for 12 major economies including the U.S., China, euro zone and Japan shows their aggregate money supply had already more than doubled to $80 trillion from before the 2008-2009 financial crisis. These numbers are so large that they no longer have any meaning; they are simply abstractions. The dollar has no real intrinsic value, backed only by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government. Under a fiat currency system, the government says that a dollar is a dollar. Its value relative to things such as other currencies and gold is determined on global markets. Gold is considered to be an objective store of value, and the metal’s rise in dollar terms can be expressed another way, which is that the dollar fell in gold terms. That implies the market has rendered a decision on the value, or rather, the purchasing power of the dollar.

   China’s central bank digital currency wallet is revealed

Screenshots of an internal mobile application developed by the ABC, initially seen circulating on WeChat on Tuesday and later verified by CoinDesk, shows the banking giant has already developed a front-end interface of how users could potentially interact with China’s CBDC – also known as DC/EP. The move hints at the acceleration of the development and deployment work of rolling out the DC/EP. CoinDesk exclusively reported last year that the People’s Bank of China had been developing the system with the involvement of the country’s four big state-owned banks as well as payments giants Ant Financial and Tencent. The testing application, which is also available for download on iOS and Android mobile devices via a site on ABC’s domain, offers a peek into the features that will be offered through a DC/EP wallet, including paying via a QR code, receiving and sending payments and initiating transactions by touching another user’s phone. The application also offers users a registration option. However, it appears the registration function is so far in test mode as it only allows whitelisted users to complete the registration process. That said, the registration step shows the test is currently being carried out in four Chinese cities including Xiong’An, Suzhou, Chengdu and Shenzhen.

The U.S. will suspend funding to the World Health Organization while it reviews the agency’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday, saying the international health agency made mistakes that “caused so much death” as the coronavirus spread across the globe. “Today I’m instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Trump said at a White House press conference. Meanwhile, In a stunning turn of events, Surgeon General Jerome Adams explained in an interview on live XM radio, that the Coronavirus Task Force has, effectively, dumped the Bill Gates/CDC/WHO predictive contagion model, and is now working with the real data. He explained on the Sirius XM’s Breitbart News Daily host Alex Marlow, that given the new data, businesses will begin to re-open as early as May, others in June. This runs contrary to the out-and-out fear-mongering of Dr. Fauci and Bill Gates who have made a media tour, threatening the public that businesses may not re-open for six months to a year, or until and unless governments purchase their conveniently patented, big-pharma vaccination.

So I think we will see some states that are, the governors feel that they’re ready, we’re poised to assist them with that reopening,” Redfield said. Trump said on Monday evening he was close to completing a plan for ending America’s coronavirus shutdown, which has thrown millions out of work, and may restart the battered US economy in some areas even before May 1. He said around 20 states were “in extremely good shape and could reopen fairly quickly.

Chernobyl fire: Toxic fumes near nuclear disaster site could sweep across Europe 

Hundreds of emergency workers have been deployed to fight the blazes which have come dangerously close to the site of the notorious 1986 nuclear disaster. Authorities fear the fires could reach abandoned vehicles at the former plant, causing mighty explosions and spreading toxic fumes across the country and the wider region. European countries are also vulnerable, including neighbours Poland, Belarus, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia and Moldova. The NASA Earth Observatory said smoke from the fires has already reached Belarus. More than 250 tonnes of water has been dropped by aircraft, the state agency for management of the exclusion zone said. Authorities sprung into action when the blaze started nine days ago. Authorities fear the flames could unleash radiation in the ground in the forests near the Chernobyl reactors. The consequences of the fires would be much more serious if flames reached the former plant, where the worse nuclear disaster in history happened in April 1986.

  Three Massive Volcanoes Erupt in Indonesia

Mount Kerinci in West Sumatra, Mount Semeru in East Java and Mount Merapi in the Central Java mountain range  demonstrated increased activity on Friday reports the Jakarta Post. That was the same day that the Anak Krakatau volcano erupted. And although all of the four volcanoes are located in the same region, their activity was unrelated. That’s because each volcano boasted a different magma chamber, reports the Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG). Volcanic and tectonic activity is common in Indonesia as the southeast Asian country is situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where many volcanoes and earthquakes are formed. “Volcanic eruptions in Indonesia are a common thing as they happen every day,” PVMBG director Kasbani. He added that the eruptions didn’t occur simultaneously. Anak Krakatau, a volcano that erupted from the remnants of the largest volcanic explosion recorded by the Krakatau volcano in 1883, erupted twice on Friday. During the second eruption, that volcano spewed out a 500-meter-high column of ash . The eruption lasted over a half hour.
