DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) — Two bombs went off in Damascus on Friday, killing at least five policemen and wounding others in the latest violence in the capital, once the impregnable stronghold of President Bashar Assad's regime.The bo mbings, including one outside a mosque that killed the policemen, came as regime forces and rebels clashed in southern neighborhoods of Damascus.In Geneva, the new president of the Red Cross said Friday he held "positive" talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad this week to gain access to detainees and free up deliveries of badly needed aid to hundreds of thousands of people. The exodus of Syrians fleeing violence — whether to seek refuge elsewhere within Syria or in neighboring countries — has dramatically accelerated in recent months as fighting has turned more brutal across the country.
Headline: Report: Syria's chemical weapons stored in 20 sites around country
The Syrian government has stored its chemical weapons and materials in some twenty sites around the country, according to a Washington Post report published on Thursday.
The report cited unnamed American and Middle Eastern officials, who also said there could be additional sites of which they were unaware.
The officials said their governments believe Syria has several tons of chemical weapons and materials, including weapons-ready sarin gas, and that the most dangerous elements of the arsenal are stored in bunkers.
The officials also said that U.S. intelligence agencies are monitoring the facilities, and have plans to secure them in the event that the situation in the country spins further out of control.
They added that the country's chemical weapons arsenal was developed for use against Israel in a war, with the help of North Korea and Russia.
An American intelligence official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told the Washington Post that foreign governments were surprised "both in terms of quantities and locations" of chemical weapons stored in Libya, when foreign experts were sent in to secure and remove such weapons.
Various areas of the country have effectively been abandoned by the regime of President Bashar Assad – the Free Syrian Army claims control over up to half the country – leading to fears that chemical weapons facilities could be looted, with weapons ending up in the hands of radical Islamists or Hezbollah.

A series of earthquakes collapsed houses and triggered landslides in a remote mountainous part of southwestern China on Friday, killing at least 50 people with the toll expected to rise. Damage was preventing rescuers from reaching some outlying areas, and communications were disrupted.
Headline: No reports of damage after two light earthquakes strike California Two light earthquakes struck California's Central Valley on Friday morning, hours after a temblor shook the Los Angeles area. A magnitude-4.0 quake struck at 6:22 a.m. about six miles southeast of the Fresno County city of Huron, which is roughly 50 miles southwest of Fresno, the U.S. Geological Service reported. A magnitude-4.1 quake struck the same area a minute later. A Huron police dispatcher said she had not received any calls reporting damage or injuries. The quakes came more than six hours after a small but shallow earthquake centered in the heart of Beverly Hills shook a lot of people awake. There were no injuries or damage reported from that quake as well.

Headline:Russia warns Israel, U.S. striking Iran would be 'literally disastrous'
Russia warned Israel and other nations not to attack Iran over its nuclear program, saying the use of force would be disastrous for the Middle East and have consequences far beyond the region, the Interfax news agency reported on Thursday.
"We warn those who are no strangers to military solutions … that this would be harmful, literally disastrous for regional stability and would set off deep shocks in the security and economic spheres that would reverberate far beyond the boundaries of the Middle East region," Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov as saying.
Russia has long opposed a military solution for the Iranian nuclear conflict, while also strongly rejecting imposing harsh financial sanctions by the UN Security Council saying the measures punish banks, companies and shipping firms. Russia says it supports the diplomatic efforts aimed at seeking an Iranian compromise concerning its nuclear aspirations.

The department said in a report on Wednesday that the number of poor Americans who repeatedly ran short of food increased by 800,000 in 2011, Reuters reported. The report added that women living alone and African-American households suffered the biggest increase in very low food security.
The US government said on Tuesday that a record number of 46.7 million people were enrolled for food stamps in June, showing a 173,000-increase compared with May.
Official figures showed a 3.3-percent hike in participation in the public aid program compared to last year.
According to almost everyone who experienced very low food security, the poor people did not have the money to buy food.
Some 97 percent of poor people said they cut back on the amount they ate or skipped a meal, while 91 percent said it happened often throughout the year. The food crisis in the US is one of the controversial issues during the presidential election campaign.
Republicans are calling for large cuts in food stamps and Medicaid to help reduce the deficit, but Democrats say the cuts are too deep. Medicaid is the US health program for low-income people and families.
Food-stamp spending, which has more than doubled in the past four years to the record amount of $75.7 billion in the fiscal year that ended on September 30, 2011, is the US Department of Agriculture’s biggest annual expense.

Mario Draghi and the ECB have spoken on the new bond-buying plan that markets have been waiting for since the last time the ECB stopped buying bonds. Goldman economist Dirk Schumacher wrote in a note that indeed, "The announcements made at today’s ECB press conference were broadly in line with our expectations." However, Schumacher also said that Goldman expects Spain to request a bailout as soon as next weekend at the next meeting of Eurogroup finance ministers now that the details of the ECB's bond-buying program have been revealed.

Headline: Police brace for more Greek protest
Some 3,500 police will be deployed at the weekend in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki where unions are planning protests against a new round of austerity that is set to see pensions and some state salaries cut further. Headline: Why is Putin stockpiling gold?
I can’t imagine it means anything cheerful that Vladimir Putin, the Russian czar, is stockpiling gold as fast as he can get his hands on it. According to the World Gold Council, Russia has more than doubled its gold reserves in the past five years. Putin has taken advantage of the financial crisis to build the world’s fifth-biggest gold pile in a handful of years, and is buying about half a billion dollars’ worth every month.
It emerged last month that financial gurus George Soros and John Paulson had also increased their bullion exposure, but it’s Putin that’s really caught my eye. No one else in the world plays global power politics as ruthlessly as Russia’s chilling strongman, the man who effectively stole a Super Bowl ring from Bob Kraft, the owner of the New England Patriots, when they met in Russia some years ago.
Putin’s moves may matter to your finances, because there are two ways to look at gold.On the one hand, it’s an investment that by most modern standards seems to make no sense. It generates no cash flow and serves no practical purpose. Headline: Judge Says 10 Rare Gold Coins Worth $80 Million Belong to Uncle Sam
A judge ruled that 10 rare gold coins worth $80 million belonged to the U.S. government, not a family that had sued the U.S. Treasury, saying it had illegally seized them.
The 1933 Saint-Gaudens double eagle coin was originally valued at $20, but sold for as much as $7.5 million at a Sotheby's auction in 2002, according to Courthouse News.
After President Theodore Roosevelt had the U.S. abandon the gold standard, most of the 445,500 double eagles that the Philadelphia Mint had struck were melted into gold bars.
However, a Philadelphia Mint cashier had managed to give or sell some of them to a local coin dealer, Israel Switt.
In 2003, Switt's family, Joan Langbord, and her two grandsons, drilled opened a safety deposit box that had belonged to him and found the 10 coins.
When the Langbords gave the coins to the Philadelphia Mint for authentification, the government seized them without compensating the family.
The Langbords sued, saying the coins belonged to them.
In 2011, a jury decided that the coins belonged to the government, but the family appealed. Last week, Judge Legrome Davis of the Eastern District Court of Pennsylvania, affirmed that decision, saying "the coins in question were not lawfully removed from the United States Mint."
Barry Berke, an attorney for the Langbords, told ABCNews.com, "This is a case that raises many novel legal questions, including the limits on the government's power to confiscate property. The Langbord family will be filing an appeal and looks forward to addressing these important issues before the 3rd Circuit."
The family said in its suit that in another seizure of the 1933 double eagle, the government split the proceeds with the owner after the coin sold for $7.59 million in 2002, according to Coinbooks.org.

America added 96,000 workers last month following a revised 141,000 rise in July that was smaller than first estimated, trailing the median estimate of economists surveyed by Bloomberg for a gain of 130,000. Unemployment unexpectedly fell to 8.1 percent as more Americans left the workforce, and hourly earnings were unchanged. Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke said last week he wouldn’t rule out more stimulus to bolster a job market he described as “a grave concern.’
‘‘It’s a disappointing report across the board and it puts the Fed in the driver’s seat for additional quantitative easing,” said Chad Morganlander, a Florham Park, New Jersey- based fund manager

Headline: 368,000 people LEAVE the workforce in bleak employment report dealing blow to Obama re-election hopes
Just 96,000 American jobs were added in August in a bleak monthly jobs report as 368,000 left the workforce, bringing labour market participation down to its lowest level for 31 years and dealing a blow to President Barack Obama’s re-election chances. The national unemployment rate dropped to 8.1 per cent, down from 8.2 per cent, but this was only because so many people gave up looking for work. If the participation rate had not dropped so precipitously, unemployment would have risen to 8.4 per cent. Factory employment fell by the most in two years and temporary-help companies eliminated positions for the first time in five months. The 69.9 per cent labor force participation rate for men is at lowest level recorded since the US government began tracking it in 1948. According to James Pethokoukis of the American Enterprise Institute, the unemployment rate would be 11.4 per cent if the labour force participation rate had remained what it was when Obama took office in January 2009. Two more cases of hantavirus have been linked to Yosemite National Park, including one that resulted in the death of a West Virginia resident, officials announced Thursday.Three people have now died of the rare, rodent-borne disease after visiting the park this summer; five others have been sickened. Yosemite officials announced the two additional cases; the death was confirmed by the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department in West Virginia, which said that a Kanawha County resident who visited the park "in recent months" died of the disease.

Headline: Alabama to require biometric scans for prison visitors

The Alabama Department of Corrections has implemented a new policy that requires visitors to state prisons to have their fingerprint scanned before entering prison facilities. It is the first state to implement the requirement. Alabama has 29 correctional facilities with approximately 25,500 adult inmates.
Brian Corbett, the Department of Corrections spokesman said: “Our IT department came up with the idea of scanning fingerprints as part of an upgrade. We still require visitors to have a government-issued photo ID, and that requirement will remain in place. But there are times when someone else resembles the photo on an ID. Scanning the fingerprint of visitors verifies they are who they say they are.”
Corbett said scanning fingerprints makes the visitation process more efficient and faster. The visitor places his or her index finger on a fingerprint reader in order to verify their identity. Correction officers will no longer have to look at every ID to verify each visitor. Furthermore, Corbett assured the public that visitor fingerprints will not be filed in a database or shared with law enforcement.

“Taking a cell from an adult and converting it all the way back to when that person was a 6-day-old embryo creates a completely new biology toward our understanding of how cells age and what happens when things go wrong, as in cancer development,”.
In an announcement from the research center, he explained that the team on which he worked took cord blood cells, treated them with growth factors and used plasmids to transfer four genes into them.
“They then delivered an electrical pulse to the cells, making tiny holes in the surface through which the plasmids could slip inside. Once inside, the plasmids triggered the cells to revert to a more primitive cell state,” the research center reported.
“The discovery could be the key to cure the incurable – from heart attacks to severed spinal cords to cancer – and open the door, some day, to eternal youth,” wrote Diaz at Gizmodo.
He said there are a number of significant developments.
“To start with, it uses normal adult blood cells from the patient, so there’s no need to keep umbilical cords in storage. It also doesn’t use any virus reprogramming, so it’s completely safe. It’s also very efficient: researchers successfully transformed about 50 to 60 percent of adult blood cells into
embryonic stem cells that can then be turn[ed] into any type of cell – a heart muscle cell, a bone cell, a nerve cell, anything.”

Julie Schickling stood out on her porch in West Seattle just after midnight because she couldn't explain what she was hearing. There’s an epic faith battle playing itself out in the European court system that will have a onumental impact on public expressions of faith in the workplace.The stakes are certainly high in the case, which was brought by four Christians who claim they were discriminated against when they were told that they could not wear a crucifix to work (additionally, two additional individuals have related cases surrounding same-sex attraction). Rather than defending the individuals’ rights, government lawyers are siding with employers, claiming that believers may need to sacrifice their jobs if they wish to express their faith in such a public manner.
According to these lawyers, religious individuals are not legally entitled to the right to wear crosses against the will of their employers. Because the crucifix isn’t “a scriptural requirement,” the government says employers aren’t obligated to allow it. This argument paints a starkly different picture from United Kingdom Prime Minister David Cameron’s previous promises to change laws in a fashion that would protect religious expression in the workplace — something that apparently won’t be happening.
“There is a difference between the professional sphere where your religious beliefs conflict with other interests and the private sphere,” said James Eadie QC, a legal representative for the government. “Everyone has the right to express their beliefs, including the right to display religious symbols, but not an absolute right or a right without limits.”
