Headline: Hamas launched 28 rocket attacks on Israel in January
Israel’s military has assessed that the Hamas regime renewed missile and rocket strikes on Israel. The Israeli military cited a sharp increase in missile and rocket attacks by Hamas and Palestinian militias from the Gaza Strip. The military said the renewal of strikes began last month. “Since the beginning of 2014, over 28 rockets were launched from Gaza at Israel by Gaza terrorists,” the Israeli military said. In a statement on Jan. 31, the military said rocket attacks during the month were nearly triple those of December 2013. In December, the military cited 10 rocket strikes from the Gaza Strip. “Fourteen of the rockets landed in southern Israel, and five were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile defense system, as they were approaching Ashkelon built up areas,” the military said. “In retaliation to these rocket attacks, IAF aircraft targeted numerous terror sites across the Gaza strip. In addition, at the beginning of January, IAF aircrafts targeted a terror squad during final preparations to launch rockets at southern Israel.” Military sources said Hamas was not directly participating in most of the rocket launches. But they said Hamas was not arresting rocket squads from such militias as Islamic Jihad, Popular Resistance Committees and Al Qaida-aligned militias. The statement did not explain the sharp rise in attacks.

Headline: Report: Israel may pay $20M in compensation for aid flotilla deaths
Families of nine people killed in an Israeli raid on a Turkish aid flotilla in 2010 have been offered $20 million in compensation, senior Western diplomats say. The diplomats, who have been briefed on the negotiations, said an agreement has not been finalized, Israeli broadcaster Arutz Sheva reported Monday, citing an exclusive report by Haaretz. Turkey initially demanded $30 million in connection with the deaths of the nine activists aboard the Mavi Marmara, which was attempted to deliver humanitarian aid to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Israel reportedly countered it wouldn’t pay more than $15 million, Arutz Sheva said. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu later offered $20 million, with $3 million more possible “if necessary to secure an agreement,” the report said.

1 Thessalonians 5:33 For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. This weekend there was news concerning the stalled peace talks. By the headline below one would think that there is going to be a peace deal signed between the PLO and Israel but, I for one do not believe it. Why? The PLO won’t consider saying Israel is a recognized state. There are other things that will be a hang nail in these new round of talks but, what I really want you to see is this short section from the report because it shows you the direction the PLO is thinking is in the direction of the Psalm 83 war of which they will take part in. Take notice of the quoted section of the report in red below.
Israel to Accept, Palestinians Reject Kerry Peace Plan
Meanwhile, Abbas’ envoy to Iran, Jibril Rajoub, avoided such flights of fancy, and went straight to making threats. “If the talks fail, armed struggle against [Israel] could be a strategic solution for the Palestinian people,” Rajoub was quoted as telling Iranian media, emphasizing that Palestinians “never abandoned the solution of an armed uprising.”
I keep telling people that the PLO is not looking for peace with Israel they are looking for war and they will get their wish but they are not going to like the out come of that war. Once again I want to warn everyone to watch out for some natural disaster to hit America as Kerry under the Obama leadership has heaped God’s curse on her for trying to divide up Israel.

Headline: Abbas Suggests NATO Presence in Palestinian State
Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has suggested that NATO would be left in charge of the future Palestinian state instead of an army. Speaking to The New York Times from Ramallah, Abbas said that he would agree to let Israeli troops remain in the Palestinian state for a transitional period of five years to work with Palestinian and Jordanian security forces and reassure the Israeli public that it is not going to get hit with thousands of rockets, as was the case after the “Disengagement” from Gaza. Last week, Abbas indicated that he would agree to have Israeli troops remain in Judea and Samaria for only three years, rejecting an idea by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry to have Israeli forces remain for 10 to 15 years.

Headline: PM: World must pressure Abbas to recognize Jewish state
Unless the Palestinian Authority agrees to recognize Israel as the Jewish state there will be no deal, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Monday. Speaking to members of the Likud-Beytenu Knesset faction, Netanyahu said that PA chief Mahmoud Abbas “knows full well” that without such recognition there could be no agreement. Such recognition would be a major price for the PA to pay, and Netanyahu does not believe the PA is willing to pay it. “If they do not make this concession there cannot be an agreement,” Netanyahu said, adding that he did not believe the PA would be willing to make it.

Headline: Fatah wants Kerry prosecuted before ICC for ‘threatening’ Abbas
US Secretary of State John Kerry recently threatened PA President Mahmoud Abbas that he would meet the same fate as his predecessor, Yasser Arafat, if he turned down Washington’s proposals for peace with Israel, a Palestinian source was quoted Sunday as saying. The source told the website Rai al-Youm that Abbas angrily stormed out of a four-hour meeting with Kerry in Ramallah after the latter exerted pressure on him to accept the proposals. The source claimed that Kerry told Abbas his fate would not be “less than that of Yasser Arafat.” Jamal Muhaissen, a senior Fatah official in the West Bank, said that if the report is true, “this shows that Israel assassinated Yasser Arafat after receiving a green light from the US administration.” Muhaissen said that Kerry’s threat comes in wake of his failure to impose a settlement on Israel that is “consistent with international law.”

Headline: Iranian FM: Recognition of Israel possible if deal reached with Palestinians
Iran’s Foreign Minister told German television on Monday that the Islamic Republic would not rule out recognizing Israel after an Israeli-Palestinian peace deal. “Once the Palestinian problem is solved the conditions for an Iranian recognition of Israel will be possible,” the Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in an interview with the German TV station Phoenix, according to i24 News. “We have to put on the table a solution that will be acceptable by the Palestinians but until now we have not seen such a proposal,” Zarif noted. “Crimes have been committed against the Palestinian people and we just cannot do that [recognize Israel] until they will be recognize. Only then it will be possible to discuss other solutions,” he added.

Headline: Jordan invokes 1994 peace treaty with Israel for a say in Kerry’s Jordan Valley security and Jerusalem plans
While batting back Israel’s complaints over references to anti-Israel boycotts in relation to peacemaking with the Palestinians, US Secretary of State John Kerry has again bumped his head against another piece of Middle East history: The 1994 Israeli-Jordanian peace treaty. In an exchange of messages in the last few days, debkafile’s Middle East sources reveal that King Abdullah II filed a strong protest with Kerry against the failure of the security-political clauses in his framework accord to address issues involving the Hashemite Kingdom’s political future and security. Above all, he castigated the plan for failing to factor in past treaties concluded between Jordan and Israel with US encouragement. Kerry has responded by ordering a reassessment of the security blueprint drawn by US Gen. Jon Allen, former NATO commander in Afghanistan, with the assistance of a team of 90 US intelligence and security experts working out of Washington and Israel. The security arrangements he proposes in a future Palestinian state for the Jordan Valley, which also marks Jordan’s Western border, would replace Israeli border units with a system of electronic surveillance devices including drones, satellites and other instruments for securing the Jordanian border.

Headline: Jordan’s FM Rejects Recognizing Israel as Jewish State
Jordan’s Foreign Minister said Sunday that he was against recognizing Israel as a Jewish state, the Jordanian website Ammon News reports. The minister, Nasser Judeh, also rejected the idea of Jordan being an alternative home for Palestinian Arabs. Speaking during a parliament session which dealt with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry’s peace plan, Judeh reiterated that Jordan will not be an “alternative home for anybody.” Judeh described American efforts to push peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA) as a “serious attempt” to reach tangible results. “Jordan is integrally involved in and has big role in the Palestinian-Israeli talks,” he added, according to Ammon News. Judeh stressed that Jordan is not absent from the peace negotiations and will not accept any solution that contradicts with the country’s interests and national security. “Jordan will not negotiate on behalf of Palestinians regarding their envisioned state’s borders with Israel,” Judeh added. He reiterated Jordan’s stance which calls for the establishment of an independent Palestinian state along the pre-1967 borders with eastern Jerusalem as its capital. This, he said, is a top Jordanian national interest.

Headline: Clashes leave one dead in Tripoli
A bomb blast has hit south of the Lebanese capital Beirut, leaving at least two people dead. According Lebanon’s Interior Ministry, the blast took place on Monday when an attacker detonated his explosives inside a van which had been used for public transportation in Choueifat area. No group has yet claimed responsibility for the blast. The explosion came after Saturday’s car bomb attack killed at least five people in the border town of Hermel in northeastern Lebanon. The UN Security Council issued a statement on the same day, urging Lebanese people to “preserve national unity in the face of attempts to undermine the country’s stability.” UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon also condemned the deadly assault.

Headline: Egypt army raids kill 20 militants in Sinai
Egyptian military officials say troops backed by helicopters have raided suspected militants’ hideouts in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula, killing at least 20 and wounding 25. They say Monday’s sweep, which led to the arrest of 16 suspected militants, was among the biggest in an ongoing offensive against militants waging an insurgency in the strategic area bordering the Gaza Strip and Israel. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. The raids are part of an escalation of the fighting in Sinai. On Friday, army aircraft pounded suspected militants’ positions, killing 13 people. Late last month, militants, some of whom are linked to Al-Qaeda, shot down an army helicopter, killing all five men on board.

Headline: Report: Assad stockpiling chemical weapons as ‘insurance policy’
Elements of NATO are ready to destroy Syria’s chemical weapons arsenal, after the United States expressed concern over the Syrian government’s slow efforts to transport the toxic arms to its Mediterranean port, U.S. European Command chief Air Force Gen. Philip Breedlove told Al Arabiya News Channel in an interview aired Sunday. “The international community, elements of NATO and the United States are prepared to destroy the chemical weapons,” Ge. Breedlove, who is the 17th Supreme Allied Commander Europe of NATO Allied Command Operations, said. “We have the existence requirements to address this issue in place, so we encourage Syria to be on schedule and on time to deliver the weapons, so we can get the task accomplished,” he added. Under a timeline drawn up last year, the most toxic chemicals in Syria’s 1,300-metric-ton stockpile were to be removed from the country by Dec. 31. The deadline was missed due to poor security in war-torn Syria, among other factors. Meanwhile, Embattled Syrian leader Bashar Assad is stockpiling weapons of mass destruction rather than handing over them as agreed last summer, the Sunday Times reported, quoting Israeli and Russian sources. The report cites the sources as saying that the WMDs, which include chemical and biological weapons, are being upgraded with North Korean and Iranian assistance, and are believed by the Israelis to be located in Western Syria, in “the heartland of his Alawite sect”. They are to serve, the paper said, “as an insurance policy in case (Assad’s) country is eventually partitioned.”

Comment: Listed below are the nations which will attack Israel from Ezekiel chapter 38 and their modern day names.
Gog is the leader of the Russian invasion of Israel.
Magog, Meshech, and Tubal comprise modern day Russia.
Persia is Iran, parts of northern Iraq, and Afghanistan.
Cush is Ethiopia and Sudan.
Put is Libya and will most likely include Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco.
Gomer is Eastern Germany.
Beth Togarmah is Turkey and Armenia.
There are major differences between the Psalm 83 war and the Ezekiel 38 war which shows us they are not the same war. Here are a few major differences. At the current time Israel is still calling for Peace and safety and they have bars, gates, and walls to protect them from the PLO. The told Ezekiel this war will take place when Israel is living in peace and feeling safe. As long as the enemies of Israel listed in the Psalm 83 war are working to wipe out Israel, Israel will never feel safe enough to remove any of the bars, gates, or walls which shows us the Psalm war has to take place first. Another major difference between the Psalm war and Ezekiel war is the nations who attack Israel are different. In the Psalm 83 war you see the nations that border Israel attacking her. The nations listed to attack Israel in the Ezekiel war do not show any of the nations which are listed in the Psalm war. Why? The answer is simple. Israel will already have destroyed the nations who attacked them in the Psalm 83 war and they will make no other to attempt to wipe them out. When the nations listed in the Ezekiel war see what Israel did to their Brothers listed in the Psalm war they in turn will pick up the torch and try to do what the Psalm 83 nations couldn’t do, wipe Israel off the map. How will this Ezekiel 38-39 war end. God tells us that 5/6 of the entire army that attacks Israel will be killed. At the end of the day Israel will have won the Psalm 83 war and the Ezekiel war. In the Psalm 83 war the IDF will have defeated their enemies. In the Ezekiel it will be God who steps in to wipe out all the armies who try to wipe out Israel. The current events you are now witnessing in the Middle East is setting up the scene for both the Psalm war and Ezekiel war.

I will bring disaster upon them, My fierce anger,’ says the Lord; ‘And I will send the sword after them Until I have consumed them. 38 I will set My throne in Elam, And will destroy from there the king and the princes,’ says the Lord. 39 ‘But it shall come to pass in the latter days: I will bring back the captives of Elam,’ says the Lord.”

Several thousand protesters marched through central Moscow on Sunday to call for the release of 20 people who were arrested after clashes between police and demonstrators in May 2012. Some of them face up to 10 years in prison if convicted for the protest, held on Bolotnaya Square on the eve of President Vladimir Putin’s inauguration to a third term as Russia’s president. Putin’s return to the presidency saw the passing of new laws aimed at cracking down on anti-government protests and restricting non-governmental organizations. The protesters marched Sunday with portraits of the jailed protesters and a banner stretching across the street reading: “Freedom to the Bolotnaya heroes, the hostages of Putin.” Some also carried Ukrainian flags to show their support for the anti-government protesters in neighboring Ukraine, where demonstrations have been going on for more than two months.

Headline: Iraqi forces prepare to retake Fallujah
A new series of car bombings in and around Baghdad today killed at least 23 people, officials said, as Iraq’s Shiite-led government grapples with a stubborn Sunni extremist-led insurgency in the western Anbar province. In the town of Mahmoudiya, a car bomb went off near the local council building, followed by another at a nearby outdoor market, a police officer said. The blasts in the town, located about 30 kilometres south of Baghdad, killed nine people and wounded 28. In Baghdad, an explosives-laden car ripped through a commercial area in the northern Hurriyah neighbourhood, killing four people and wounding 11, he added. Three bystanders were killed and nine were wounded in another car bomb explosion in the city’s eastern Baladiyat neighbourhood, another police officer said. Also, a sticky bomb attached to a minibus exploded in Baghdad’s Shiite neighbourhood of Sadr City, Killing one passenger and wounding four others, police said. After nightfall, a car bomb went off near an out-door market in Baghdad’s Abdu Dashir district, killing six shoppers and wounding 14 others, they added. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks but coordinated bombings bear the hallmarks of Al-Qaeda’s affiliate in Iraq. The group, emboldened by the successes of its fellow militants in the civil war next door in Syria and by widespread Sunni anger at the Iraqi government, has taken credit for previous attacks against Shiites, security forces and government buildings.

In Revelation 17:9 the angel begins to tell John the meaning of the seven heads. Here in verse 9 the angel says they “are seven mountains, on which the woman sitteth.” In Revelation 17:10 we are also told there are seven kings. I quote, “10And there are seven kings: five are fallen, and one is, and the other is not yet come; and when he cometh, he must continue a short space.” Now this next verse is very important so keep this in mind. I quote, ”And the beast that was, and is not even he is the eighth, and is of the seven and goeth into perdition” Revelation 17:11. The seven mountains here refer to kingdoms or governments. The kings of course are the rulers of the kingdoms. In this case seven kings rule the seven kingdoms.(Revelation)

Headline: German minister: keep EU door open to Turkey
Germany’s foreign minister says it is important to keep the European Union’s door open to Turkey following turbulence over a corruption scandal, and he’s advocating opening two new sections of its membership talks. Turkey’s talks on joining the EU began in 2005 but have long been effectively stalled, mainly due to Turkey’s dispute with EU member Cyprus and skepticism in some European nations about admitting a populous, largely Muslim country. Recent corruption allegations and Turkey’s handling of them also have caused concern. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Monday it would make sense to open the sections of Turkey’s membership negotiations that address justice and human rights. Steinmeier said after meeting his Turkish counterpart that this would enable a ‘‘serious conversation about how things stand in Turkey at the moment.’’

Headline: Third Greek bailout to be worth €10-20bn
Greece’s third bailout is in the making, with a German finance ministry paper leaked to Der Spiegel putting the price tag at €10-20 billion. In a separate interview with Wirtschaftswoche magazine out on Monday (3 February), German finance minister Wolfgang Schaeuble also said there will be a new Greek package, but noted it will be “far smaller” than the two previous ones, which totalled €240 billion in loans. Talk about a third bailout resumed last week at a finance ministers’ meeting, after the troika of international lenders (the European Commission, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund) identified a shortfall of €15 billion in Greece’s funding once the current bailout ends this year. But, according to the leaked German paper, Athens will have to speed up its reforms, as fewer than half of the agreed measures have been implemented so far. A second debt restructuring deal, as demanded by the International Monetary Fund, is still not part of the German plan – as it would hit eurozone governments, notably Germany, whose banks now hold most of Greek debt.

Headline: Currency crisis at Chinese banks ‘could trigger global meltdown’
The growing problems in the Chinese banking system could spill over into a wider financial crisis, one of the most respected analysts of China’s lenders has warned. Charlene Chu, a former senior analyst at Fitch in Beijing and now the head of Asian research at Autonomous Research, said the rapid expansion of foreign-currency borrowing meant a crisis in China’s financial system was becoming a bigger risk for international banks. “One of the reasons why the situation in China has been so stable up to this point is that, unlike many emerging markets, there is very, very little reliance on foreign funding. As that changes, it obviously increases their vulnerability to swings in foreign investor appetite,” said Ms Chu in an interview with The Telegraph. Ms Chu has been warning since 2009 about the growth of a shadow banking system in China that has helped fuel the credit expansion seen in the country in the wake of the Western financial crisis. However, fears are growing that the build-up of foreign borrowing by the Chinese, particularly in US dollars, is creating an even greater build-up of risk than that seen before the crisis of 2008.

January was a tough month. The S&P 500 slid 3.6% in the broad market average’s worst month since May 2012 and its worst January since 2010. The tumble was driven by worries about intense volatility in emerging-market currencies, coupled with brewing trouble in China. So far, February is off to a similarly grim start. “Global stocks remain on the weak side, with risk appetite waning in conjunction with weakness in EM uncertainty regarding central bank policy and evidence of further slowdown in China,” analysts at Nomura wrote to clients on Monday.

See that you are not troubled; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet.” Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword.Matthew 24:6 , Revelation 6:3-4 & Revelation 6:8
“And this shall be the plague with which the Lord will strike all the people who fought against Jerusalem: Their flesh shall dissolve while they stand on their feet, Their eyes shall dissolve in their sockets, And their tongues shall dissolve in their mouths.” Zechariah 14:12

Headline: Chinese ships sail through disputed waters: Japan Coast Guard
China has accused Japan of heightening regional tensions with “rumours” that Beijing planned to declare a new air defence zone over the South China Sea. Foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei said right-wing forces in Japan had repeatedly made such allegations with the intention of shifting international attention from the “plot” to change Japan’s pacifist constitution, the official Xinhua news agency reported. “We sternly warned these forces not to mislead public opinions with rumours and play up tensions for their own selfish benefit,” he said in a press release Saturday quoted by Xinhua. Meanwhile, Chinese ships sailed through disputed waters off Tokyo-controlled islands on Sunday as diplomatic tension between Tokyo and Beijing intensifies. Three Chinese coastguard vessels entered the 12-nautical-mile territorial waters off one of the Senkakus, which China claims and calls the Diaoyus, at about 10:00am (0100 GMT), Japan’s coastguard said. It came days after a diplomatic battle over Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to a contested war shrine reached the UN Security Council, with China and Japan accusing each other of threatening stability.

Headline: Cancer cases worldwide to jump to 22 million
Governments must make better use of vaccines and preventative public health policies in the fight against cancer as treatment alone cannot stem the disease, a World Health Organization (WHO) agency said on Monday. The WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) said cancer was growing “at an alarming pace” worldwide and new strategies were needed to curb the sometimes fatal and often costly disease. “It’s untenable to think we can treat our way out of the cancer problem. That alone will not be a sufficient response,” Christopher Wild, IARC’s director and co-editor of its World Cancer Report 2014, told reporters at a London briefing. “More commitment to prevention and early detection is desperately needed… to complement improved treatments and address the alarming rise in the cancer burden globally.” The report said that in 2012 – the latest year for which data are available – new cancer cases rose to an estimated 14 million a year, a figure expected to grow to 22 million within the next two decades. Over the same period, cancer deaths are predicted to rise from an estimated 8.2 million a year to 13 million per year.

Headline: H7N9 kills two more, causing new infections in China
A 59-year-old man having close contact with live poultry died on Monday morning of the H7N9 flu virus, the first of its kind in central China’s Hunan province, local authority said. A separate statement issued by the health department of Guangdong province on Monday said a patient surnamed Xie died of the virus on Sunday in Foshan after treatment failed. With the new cases, H7N9 has so far killed 25 people in China since January, and the number of human infections has been 113, with Zhejiang and Guangdong being mostly affected. Hunan’s health department said the man killed by the virus, surnamed Li, was a resident with the Longxing District of Louding City. He was among the province’s four human infection cases confirmed this year. Since China ushered in the Spring Festival holiday on Friday, four people have been killed by the virus till Monday, according to local health authorities. The other two deaths were both in Guangdong, involving a 63-year-old in Shenzhen and an 82-year-old man in Foshan. There have been 11 human infection cases reported during the holiday, including two deaths mentioned above. Among the other nine new infections, one was reported to be in a critical situation in Zhangzhou of east China’s Fujian Province.

Headline: Egypt reports 16 swine flu deaths
Sixteen people in Egypt have died from the H1N1 virus – commonly known as swine flu – since the start of the winter, the country’s Ministry of Health said Monday. The ministry’s spokesman, Ahmed Kamel, was quoted by the daily newspaper Al Masry Al Youm as saying that in all, 172 people have been diagnosed with the virus, including those who died. Recent weeks have seen criticism from doctors and patients, who accused the ministry of underplaying the threat of the virus. An official of the Doctors’ Syndicate, a major medical organization, told Egyt’s CBC television that the ministry had been warned weeks ago about the danger of the virus. However, the Health Ministry insisted that the rates of contracting the virus were less than the global average at this time of year. Kamel, the ministry spokesman, said public hospitals across the country were being provided with the drug Tamiflu to help fight the virus. He also denied reports that doctors were among the dead, saying that medical personnel had been vaccinated.

“I will consume man and beast; I will consume the birds of the heavens, The fish of the sea, And the stumbling blocksalong with the wicked. I will cut off man from the face of the land,” Says the Lord.” (Zephaniah)
“There is no faithfulness, no love, no acknowledgment of God in the land. There is only cursing, lying and murder, stealing and adultery; they break all bounds, and bloodshed follows bloodshed. Because of this the land mourns, and all who live in it waste away; the beasts of the field and the birds of the air and the fish of the sea are dying. [Hosea 4:1-3]
The fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the beasts of the field, every creature that moves along the ground, and all the people on the face of the earth will tremble at my presence. The mountains will be overturned, the cliffs will crumble and every wall will fall to the ground. [Ezekiel 38:20]

Headline: More than 400 dead dolphins on north Peru coast in 1 month
Peruvian officials say more than 400 dead dolphins were found last month on the Pacific Ocean beaches where twice that amount were encountered in 2012. Authorities never established the cause of death in 2012. They are doing autopsies now on the dolphins found in January in the Lambayeque region on the northern coast. Technician Jaime de la Cruz of Peru’s IMARPE marine life agency says about 220 dead dolphins were found the last week of January, the rest during the previous three weeks. De la Cruz says autopsy results are expected in two weeks. Exams will focus on lungs, kidneys and livers. Autopsies of some of the more than 870 dolphins found in 2012 were inconclusive. Speculation ranged from biotoxins in the sea to seismic testing to an unknown ailment.

Headline: Fears death toll could rise in Indonesia volcano eruption
Indonesian officials searched through thick ash for bodies Sunday after Mount Sinabung volcano erupted, killing at least 15 people, with the only sign of life an ownerless mobile phone ringing inside an abandoned bag. Dark, searing clouds engulfed victims during the eruption on Saturday, leaving rescuers with little hope of finding survivors as they searched through ash up to 30 centimetres (12 inches) thick. Officials said about 170 people armed with chainsaws and oxygen apparatus spread out through the destruction in Sukameriah village, just 2.7 kilometres (1.7 miles) from Sinabung’s crater, Sunday before the search was called off. “There’s no sign of human life. All the crops were gone. Many houses were damaged and those still standing were covered in thick white ash. It was hard to walk in ash which nearly reached my calves,” Gito, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP.

Headline: Alert level raised on Indonesia’s Kelut volcano in East Java, following seismic swarm
The alert level of the volcano was raised today on Kelut or Kelud volcano from 1 (‘normal’) to 2 (“Waspada,” or ‘watch’) on a scale of 1-4. During the second half of 2014, a strong increase in seismic activity and a 5.5 deg temperature increase of the crater lake water had been detected. The number of shallow volcanic earthquakes rose from averages of 1-2 per day to approx 10 per day during 20-31 Jan and climbed to more than 100 events since the start of February alone. This might indicate a shallow intrusion is taking place and could lead to a new eruption. VSI had recommended a 2 km radius exclusion zone from the crater. The last eruption of Kelut was in Oct-Nov 2007, when a new lava dome grew within the crater lake.

An Italian woman watched aghast as her seven-year-old daughter and two other female relatives were swept to their deaths Sunday when an overflowing river in Sicily engulfed their car, media reported. Rain and windstorms have unleashed across the Italian island of Sicily in recent days, leading to swollen rivers and causing widespread flooding. The family members were all traveling in the same small Lancia hatchback before dawn when it was grabbed by the rushing waters in eastern Sicily. The woman and three other occupants made it out and to the safety of the riverbank, but her daughter and two other women remained trapped inside and drowned. Elsewhere on the Italian island, a four-wheel-drive vehicle was also picked up by a raging river, but both occupants were rescued in an operation involving a helicopter. The incidents occurred as Italy suffered a bout of foul weather over the weekend that has unfurled rain and windstorms across the country, making rivers surge and causing widespread flooding. Heavy snowfall in the Italian Alps has disrupted communications and electricity supplies, and resulted in the suspension of some train services with neighboring Austria. The meteorological conditions were expected to last into Tuesday.

Headline: Heaviest snowstorm in 50 years blankets northern Iran
The heaviest snowstorm in five decades has blanketed provinces in northern Iran, cutting power supplies and trapping villagers, Iranian media reported Monday. The storm is “unprecedented for the past 50 years, with two meters (almost seven feet) of snow falling since Friday,” a Mazandaran provincial official said, quoted by the media. “Our main problems are (the provision of) power and water, which have been cut off due to the heavy snow,” he said.
