DID YOU KNOW?
Today, beginning at sundown, is Yom Kippur? Yom Kippur is the 2nd of the Fall Feasts and ends the Day’s of Awe which began on Rosh Hashana. The Days of Awe are when you are to repent of your sins from the previous year- both to God and to others whom you may have sinned against. And then on Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement), God forgives your sins and writes your name in the Book of Life for the following year. That is why the customary greeting on Yom Kippur is “g’mar chatimah tovah, “May your final sealing (in the Book of Life) be good.” It is the one time a year that even non-religious Jews will go to synagogue and participate in prayer.
And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: “Also the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the Day of Atonement. It shall be a holy convocation for you; you shall afflict your souls (deny yourselves), and offer an offering made by fire to the LORD. And you shall do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make atonement for you before the LORD your God. For any person who is not afflicted in soul on that same day shall be cut off from his people. And any person who does any work on that same day, that person I will destroy from among his people. You shall do no manner of work; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations in all your dwellings. It shall be to you a Sabbath of solemn rest, and you shall afflict your souls; on the ninth day of the month at evening, from evening to evening, you shall celebrate your Sabbath.” Leviticus 23:26-32
We know that the Days of Awe are a good time to follow scripture and examine ourselves. Since believers in Christ have the Holy Spirit in their hearts, we confess our sins as they occur and stand on the promise “That if we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and cleanse us of all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9) Believers in Jesus Christ (Yeshua Messiah), even Jewish believers, can celebrate God’s holiday with prayers for Israel and of thankfulness for the completed work we have received in Christ’s work on the cross. Our names are PERMANENTLY written in the Lamb’s Book of Life and it is a time of joy!
Headline: Sweden breaks EU ranks to recognise Palestine
The new left-wing government in Sweden has promised to recognise Palestine, amid harsh EU criticism of Israel’s latest settlement expansion. The PM, Stefan Lofven, made the pledge at his inuaguration speech in parliament on Friday (3 October). “The conflict between Israel and Palestine can only be solved by a two-state solution, negotiated in accordance with international law. It must guarantee both the Palestinians’ and Israelis’ legitimate demands for national sovereignty and security”, he said. “A two-state solution requires mutual recognition and a will to peaceful co-existence. Sweden will therefore recognise the state of Palestine”. The step is the first ever by a member of the EU.

Headline: UK parliament to vote on Palestinian statehood
The UK parliament will be voting on a motion to recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel on 13 October. The application proposed by parliamentary backbenchers was originally presented to the Backbench Business Committee (BBC) on 8 April, but was not given debate time in parliament until recently. The landmark motion which says: “This House believes the Government should recognise the state of Israel alongside the state of Palestine,” is aimed to push the British government to recognise Palestinian national rights and their rights to self-determination, said Chris Doyle, director of the Council for Arab-British Understanding Caabu. Experts say that the UK parliamentary vote bares a significant symbolic meaning: “It is likely to be a moral victory that may force the UN members to follow,” said international law specialist Toby Cadman, a barrister at the Nine Bedford Row International Chambers of London. “The vote in the lower house is hugely important and is likely to force a vote in the House of Lords as well,” he added. Cadman believes there is a strong chance the motion will pass – citing the recent 51-day Gaza war and the increasing support for Palestine since the UN upgraded the country’s status in 2012.

Headline: Israel on edge as Yom Kippur, Id al-Adha overlap for first time in more than 30 years
Israeli police were on high alert Friday to avert possible clashes as Jews and Muslims prepare to observe their faith’s major holidays of Yom Kippur and Id al-Adha, which overlap this year for the first time in more than three decades. Reinforced police contingents had been deployed across Israel as a precaution against sectarian violence, said police spokeswoman Luba Samri. Concerns were particularly high in the four Israeli cities with significant Muslim minorities: Jerusalem and Jaffa, as well as in Haifa and Acre. In a related development, the military said it had closed off the West Bank and the Gaza Strip as a general security measure, a common practice during major Jewish holidays. On Yom Kippur, Israel comes to a virtual standstill. Businesses and airports shut down and TV and radio stations go silent. The holiday begins at sunset Friday and ends Saturday night.

Headline: Explosion Near IDF Forces on Syria Border
An explosion was heard close to an IDF post near the Syrian border in the Golan Heights on Friday morning, patrols told Israeli media. The blast caused no injury or damage. IDF officials are scanning the area to determine the cause of the blast, and to check whether it is spillover from Syria’s civil war or a failed attempt to fire on Israel, according to Yediot Aharonot. One military source told Channel 10 in the minutes after the attack that the IDF estimates that it is, in fact, an attempt to fire a charge at Israeli forces. The IDF has yet to confirm this, however.

Headline: Gaza Terrorists Fire Rocket into Sea in Apparent Test
Headline: Hamas Says IDF Didn’t Destroy All Terror Tunnels
Just a little over a month after the November 26 ceasefire with Israel that ended Hamas’s terror war and the 50-day Operation Protective Edge, terrorists in Gaza fired a rocket into the sea Friday morning. No one was wounded by the projectile, which Walla! speculates was part of a missile test to check the capabilities of the terror group’s lethal arsenal. The last projectile to leave Gaza, if the two terrorist infiltration attempts into Israel last month aren’t counted, was a mortar round fired on the Eshkol region by terrorists in mid-September. Hamas, which breached numerous ceasefires during the operation in July and August, denied responsibility for the mortar fire and claimed to have arrested those responsible. If the rocket is a “test” as expected, it may indicate that industry is kicking back into life even as Hamas approaches renewed Cairo truce talks with Israel in the last week of October. Hamas has also received large quantities of rockets from Iran, among other suppliers.

Headline: Gantz Warns Hezbollah: ‘We Can Hit You Like Gaza’
IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz summarized Operation Protective Edge on Friday, in his first official interview since the 50-day operation ended in a ceasefire with the Hamas terrorist organization on August 26. The chief of staff reminded that Gaza is not the only front troubling Israel, and that Israel’s other enemies – such as the Lebanese-based Iran-proxy terror group Hezbollah – would do well to learn from the capabilities demonstrated by the IDF in the recent campaign. “(Hezbollah leader Hassan) Nasrallah sees that the Israeli society didn’t break apart and was ready to pay the price (in Gaza), and that we know to do in Lebanon what we did in Gaza,” warned the IDF head. While the Arab world has been engaged in bloody infighting, from Iraq and Syria to Sinai and many other places as well, the common enemy remains Israel, reminds Gantz. “Our enemies are currently busy with other problems, but who is next in line for all of them? Us!” stated Gantz. “If Hezbollah weren’t busy now doing what Iran tells them to do in Syria who is their fixed enemy? Us.” “If terrorist forces in the Golan stop dealing with (Syrian President Bashar) Assad, who’s their enemy? If the thousands of refugees in Jordan need to act, who will they do that against? Will the jihadists in the Sinai only act against Egypt?” asked Gantz rhetorically. Another farther enemy came up as well, namely Iran, which has been quietly advancing its nuclear program even amid nuclear talks with world powers. On this front as well, Gantz said “we are ready to act in Iran, and we should remain realistic about this threat which still exists.”

Headline: PM: No chance for peace deal if Israel sued for war crimes
Headline: PA envoy: We’ll join ICC if no Israel pullout deadline
A Palestinian push to try Israeli officials for war crimes at a United Nations tribunal would end any chance of reaching a peace deal, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. Netanyahu spoke to Army Radio on Friday, a day after the Palestinian Authority’s envoy to the United Nations said his government would join the International Criminal Court if the UN Security Council refuses to set a deadline for Israel to withdraw from all Palestinian territories. “We may end up there,” Netanyahu said of the prospect of war crimes charges being brought against Israel at the Hague-based UN tribunal. “If Abu Mazen attempts it, this will have dire consequences,” he added, using another name for Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas (meaning father of Mazen). “He could bring The Hague to do it, bringing us to the destruction of any chance of a sane peace deal.”

Headline:Arab MK Calls for Establishment of ‘United Islamic States’
After Arab MK Mohammed Barakeh (Hadash) said Israel is like the Islamic State (ISIS) terror group, and Palestinian Authority (PA) chief negotiator Saeb Erekat likened the Jewish state and “Islamic state,” Arab MK Ibrahim Sarsour (Ra’am-Ta’al) has now raised the bar. Sarsour, who heads his Arab Islamist party, was asked what its position is on ISIS. “We think that the United States, the Saudi kingdom, Israel and their confederates in the region and the world are crueler than ISIS,” said Sarsour. The comparison comes despite the fact that not only has ISIS been conducting very public beheadings of a string of captive westerners, it has been committing horrific atrocities and torture against religious minorities and Muslims it disagrees with throughout the parts of Syria and Iraq under its iron grasp. Sarsour likewise attacked the division of the Islamic and Arab world into dozens of states, calling it the implementation of “colonialist initiatives” and the “Sykes Picot initiative,” favoring a united Islamic caliphate instead. “We support one united state in the Arab world as preparation for one united state in the entire Islamic world of 1.4 billion people,” said Sarsour, terming the first as the “United Arab States” and the latter stage as the “United Islamic States.” “I want a civilian state that will operate according to the path of the prophets and caliphates that go on the upright path,” concluded the Arab member of the Knesset of Israel.

Headline: Russia vital in dealing with regional challenges — Jordanian King
His Majesty King Abdullah and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit meeting on Thursday, during which they dealt with means to strengthen Jordanian-Russian ties, boost bilateral cooperation, and address the latest regional and international developments. In joint statements to the press ahead of the meeting, King Abdullah and President Putin underscored the strong and developing cooperation and the friendly relations between the two countries. “You know how much we value in Jordan the relationship, not only personally between you and myself, but also between our two countries, and the strength of the relationship between our two countries,” the King said. “And you know how much Jordan values the special and important role that Russia plays in our region, in the Middle East, with all the challenges that we face,” he added. Not only does Russia play a vital role in the peace process between the Israelis and the Palestinians, but it also has a critical role, “and probably the most important role”, for the future of Syria, King Abdullah noted, stressing that Jordan and Russia “stand today shoulder-to-shoulder in the fight against terrorism and extremism worldwide”. “And the world must realise that without Russia dealing with the challenges in our region, we would be a lot worse off,” the King said.

Headline: Army discovers 50-kg bomb near Arsal checkpoint
A barrel packed with 50 kilos of explosives was discovered Friday near a military checkpoint outside the northeast border town of Arsal, the Lebanese Army said in a statement. An Army unit beefed up security measures in and around the area of Ras al-Sarej on the periphery of Arsal after discovering that the barrel was filled with “explosive chemicals.” Security sources told The Daily Star that the barrel contained paint thinner, which may detonate under certain conditions. A military expert who disabled the explosives concluded that the barrel was set to be detonated remotely, the Army statement added.

Headline: Saudi, UAE, U.S. Aircraft Strike IS in Syria
Aircraft from Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates joined U.S. warplanes in a new wave of bombing raids Friday against Islamic State jihadists in Syria. Coalition fighter jets and robotic drone planes conducted six strikes in Syria on Thursday and Friday, hitting militant tanks, oil refineries and a training camp, the U.S. military said. American aircraft also conducted three air raids in Iraq over the past 24 hours, including two northeast of Fallujah, Central Command said. In addition to U.S. Air Force warplanes and navy fighter jets flying off on an aircraft carrier in the Gulf, “the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates also participated in the Syria strikes.” Centcom offered no further details on the precise role of the allied aircraft in the latest strikes, and officials in the five countries that have joined the Syria operation — Bahrain, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar — have been reluctant to share details of their participation.

Syria Headline: Watching Kobane battle, Kurds lose faith in Turkey anti-IS action
Islamic State militants have advanced on the city of Kobani, threatening a siege of one of the last remaining Kurdish strongholds in Syria a day after the Turkish government won parliamentary backing for military action. Kurdish politicians reported from outside the city that there was smoke and the sound of gunfire as the extremists fired towards Kobani. Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency said the Islamic State started a new offensive on Kobani with heavy weapons and intense smoke was rising from the area. “This is the start of the tightening of the siege of Kobani and could eventually lead to street fights on the outskirts of the city,” said Rami Abdurrahman, head of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which monitors the war through a network of witnesses and activists. A spokesman for the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) earlier said it had repelled the attack. “Our heroic fighters managed to repel at least three major attacks on east, west and southern sectors of Kobani by the terrorists,” he said. The spokesman, who declined to be quoted by name, added that fighting was continuing and that the jihadist group had been bombarding Kobani, also known as Ain al-Arab, with mortar shells since the early hours of Friday morning. Tank fire from IS militants slammed into the town on Friday, threatening to drive thousands more from their homes and deprive the Kurds of one of their few remaining strongholds in Syria. “They are firing tanks and guns toward the city,” Ismail Kaplan, a local Kurdish politician said. “Clashes are taking place just outside the city limits and they are firing into the town. We can hear big booms and see smoke billowing from buildings.”

Syria Headline: Syrian Rebels: US-Led Strikes Bolster Assad
Moderate Syrian rebel field commanders said the U.S.-led air offensive in Syria is helping President Bashar al-Assad. Abu Muhammad said he disapproves of the U.S. strategy in Syria. He warned that the U.S.-led coalition against the jihadists of the Islamic State group is bolstering Assad. Muhammad said the Syrian president has taken the opportunity of the coalition airstrikes to refocus his forces, shifting some of them from eastern Syria where they were fighting the jihadists, and reinforcing his own offensive against moderate and Islamist rebels in the key city of Aleppo. He said Syrian government airstrikes on Aleppo the past two days have increased in tempo and are terrifying.

Syria Headline: Syrian army fights for last major rebel route into Aleppo
***The Syrian News Agency appears premature in their announcement
Syrian military forces have taken control of villages in the northern part of Aleppo, Syrian state news agency SANA reported Friday. Syrian army forces “eliminated big numbers” of militants and destroyed scores of vehicles used by them in three villages in the northern countryside of Aleppo, the news agency said, citing a military source. The opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported Friday that one of the seized villages, Handarat, which is crucial because it sits on a hill overlooking the only entry point into the area. The Observatory, however, later reported that rebels had retaken the hill of Handarat amid heavy clashes, which continued Friday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks violence in the country, said the army was not yet in control of the main road but that clashes centered around Handarat, a northern Aleppo district, had blocked the route. “If the army can take and hold Handarat, then Aleppo will be under siege,” Observatory head Rami Abdulrahman said by telephone.

Iraq Headline: Islamic State group downs Iraqi attack helicopter
Islamic State group militants armed with a rocket launcher shot down an Iraqi military attack helicopter Friday, killing two pilots and raising new worries about their ability to attack aircraft amid ongoing U.S.-led airstrikes. The Mi-35 helicopter crashed outside the town of Beiji, 200 kilometers (130 miles) north of Baghdad and home to Iraq’s largest oil refinery, authorities said. Iraqi Defense Ministry spokesman Mohammed al-Askari told state-run Iraqiyya TV that the crash killed the helicopter’s two pilots and that authorities had begun an investigation. An official with the Defense Ministry told The Associated Press the militants downed the between the towns of Beiji and al-Senniyah. An official with the Iraqi air force corroborated the information, saying the helicopter’s pilot and co-pilot were killed in the crash. Both Iraqi officials spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity as they are not authorized to speak with journalists.

Islamic State fighters blew up a key bridge on Friday in Iraq’s Salaheddin province as they retreated in the face of an offensive by pro-government forces, officials said. Based on an evaluation done by the Institute for the Study of War, ISIS likely seeks to merge the efforts of these two Anbar elements and close the gap at Hit. If ISIS succeeds in this, it will isolate pro-government tribes that are fighting ISIS in Haditha and Ramadi from ISF reinforcements. It will also relieve ISIS elements in Anbar by diminishing the local population’s opportunity to resist. The ISIS offensive for Anbar is closely linked to the ISIS campaign for the Baghdad Belts. If ISIS can consolidate its core strength in Anbar, then its reinforcements that are currently augmenting attacks in this zone will likely shift to reinforce the northern and southern Baghdad Belts and prepare to attack the capital.

Headline: ISIS May Resort to Chemical Attacks, Expert Warns
ISIS is feared to be readying crude chemical weapons to use against civilians if it comes under military pressure to dislodge from territory it holds in Iraq, according to a leading British expert. “I think it is very likely ISIS will use chemical weapons, especially if things start going badly for it,” said Hamish de Bretton-Gordon, a former British colonel who has helped to provide proof that chlorine gas was used by Bashar al-Assad in Syria. “ISIS has shown intent by using chlorine a number of times on Iraqi army units already,” he told Rudaw. He is currently looking into how to provide the Iraqi army with up-to-date gas masks. “They (the militants) have also seen how effective chemical weapons have been in Iraq and have probably been on the receiving end of some of the attacks by the Syrian regime so they are well aware of the terror effect,” he added in a telephone interview. In the last couple of weeks, there appear to have been several incidents in which chlorine was used in Iraq although it was difficult to get exact confirmation, de Bretton-Gordon said.

Officials in the Philippines say reports that the Islamic State group is recruiting in the country have yet to be confirmed. But authorities remain vigilant because of concerns that certain segments of the population are at risk for falling under the terror group’s influence. An official with the Philippines Anti-Terrorism Council said several factors make the country particularly vulnerable to the pull of the Islamic State terrorist group. Assistant Secretary Oscar Valenzuela said securing entry and exit points in waters off more remote southern provinces pose a challenge for the overstretched government, while social media have been a powerful tool to convey jihadist propaganda to young people. Plus, there are about two million Philippines nationals working overseas as contract workers near the conflict zone.

Ukrainian forces clashed with pro-Russian insurgents over control of a strategic airport in the restive east Friday and traded blame over the death of a Swiss aid worker, four weeks into their shaky truce. Headline: Khamenei Calls for Muslim Unity for Israel’s ‘Annihilation’
Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Friday used his annual message to Hajj pilgrims heading to Mecca to insult Israel and call for its “annihilation.” The speech comes ahead of Eid al-Adha on Friday, the Muslim holiday celebrating Abraham’s “sacrifice of Ishmael” in an appropriation of the original Torah story, and like his speech for Eid al-Fitr in July was replete with unfounded barbs hurled against the Jewish state. “The conspiring enemy is aiming to stoke the fire of a civil strife among Muslims, to misdirect the motivation for resistance and jihad and to secure the Zionist regime and the servants of Arrogance (America – ed.) – who are the real enemies,” said Khamenei referencing the bloody conflicts rocking the Muslim world. Calling for Muslim unity against Israel, the same Friday that Arab MK Ibrahim Sarsour (Ra’am-Ta’al) called for the establishment of the “United Islamic States” and bashed Israel as being “crueler than ISIS (Islamic State).” Khamenei likewise accused Israel of having “no limit or boundaries regarding viciousness, cruelty, and trampling underfoot all human standards and ethnics. Crimes, genocide, mass destruction, the killing of children, women and the homeless…they take pride in.”

Khalifa Haftar and wounding dozens more. “Fighting is ongoing around the strategic Benina air base, with militias seeking to capture the base before Eid on Saturday,” he said. “The air base houses heavy weaponry and is crucial for the militias as they attempt to seize control of Benghazi,” AbdelWahed added. The Shoura Council of Benghazi Revolutionaries said it carried out the attack in conjunction with the Libya Shield brigade and Ansar Al-Sharia.

Headline: Any Turkey military action aggression: Syrian deputy FM
Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad has warned against any military action against the crisis-hit Arab country by neighboring Turkey. The Syrian diplomat said late on Thursday that any military action by Turkey inside Syria’s territory will be considered an act of aggression. His comments came after the Turkish parliament approved a motion allowing the government to launch attacks inside Syria and Iraq. Turkey’s 550-seat parliament voted 298-98 in favor of the motion that would provide the legal grounds for Ankara to deploy forces to Iraq and Syria. The motion will last for one year. Miqdad also called on the United Nations Security Council to hold an emergency session to condemn Turkey’s decision. The Syrian official further accused Turkey and Saudi Arabia of sending militants to Syria.

Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions) Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)
Headline: Nine UN peacekeepers killed in Mali
This morning, a convoy of MINUSMA peacekeepers from the Nigerien contingent was the target of a direct attack while travelling to Indelimane, in the Menaka-Asongo corridor. A provisional toll indicated nine deaths,” the UN mission in Mali said in a statement issued on Friday. The mission has not announced any group responsible for the fatal assault. However, a Nigerien officer from the mission said the attackers belonged to the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa (MUJAO), an al-Qaeda-linked terrorist group that has been responsible for numerous attacks in northern Mali in recent years. The UN mission in Mali was established after the UN Security Council adopted resolution 2100 on April 25, 2013. It is tasked with security-related operations in the African country.

Headline: Boko Haram video shows beheading of Nigeria pilot
A new Boko Haram video shows the beheading of a man identified as the pilot of a missing Nigerian Air Force jet and burnt out parts of a plane the first indication that Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremist group has the capability to bring down aircraft. It also allegedly features Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, a man Nigeria’s military twice has claimed to kill in 2009 and again last year. Two weeks ago the military said they had killed in battle a Shekau lookalike who had posed in the group’s videos. “Here I am, alive and I will remain alive until the day Allah takes away my breath,” the man says in the Hausa language. “Even if you kill me … It will not stop us imposing Islamic rule … We are still in our Islamic state, reigning and teaching the Koran.” The United States still has a USD 7 million ransom on Shekau’s head, despite the death claims. The video was made available to The Associated Press through the same channels used previously and seems to show the same man claiming to be Shekau.

Headline: Two killed, ten injured in Yemen bomb blast
A bomb blast in northern Yemen has left at least two people dead and ten others injured. The attack reportedly took place in Amran Province, situated 53 kilometres (33 miles) northwest of the capital, Sana’a, on Friday after an explosive device planted inside a car was detonated in a popular local market. There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Amran has been the scene of violent clashes between Yemen’s Ansarullah revolutionaries, and Salafists who are backed by government forces over the past weeks. This comes as Jamal Benomar, the United Nations envoy to Yemen, left Sana’a on Thursday, following weeks of unrest in the capital and the country’s failure to name a new head of government. Benomar expressed concern over the “sensitive and unpredictable” situation in Yemen, saying the only way to bring peace to the crisis-hit country is the full implementation of agreements between the revolutionaries and the government.

The Catalan government says it will push ahead with its scheduled plan to hold an independence referendum, despite a Spanish Constitutional Court order to suspend the vote. Catalan President Artur Mas established a seven-member committee late on Thursday to supervise the referendum on Catalonia’s independence from Spain which is due to be held on November 9. Earlier on Wednesday, the creation of the supervisory commission had been ratified in the Catalan parliament. Headline: Hong Kong Protesters Cancel Talks With Government After ‘Organized Attacks’
Pushing and yelling, hundreds of Hong Kong residents tried to force pro-democracy activists from the streets they were occupying Friday as tensions rose in the weeklong protests that have shut down parts of the city. The scuffles in Kowloon’s crowded Mong Kok district, one of several areas where protesters have camped out, were the most chaotic since police used tear gas and pepper spray last weekend to try to disperse protesters pushing for greater electoral reforms for the territory. Police were hard-pressed to keep order as the two sides tussled in a tense standoff. The visibly older people trying to force out the vastly outnumbered younger protesters were yelling, shoving and at times trying to drag them away. The protesters, led by university students, said that if authorities did not act to protect the unarmed, peaceful demonstrators, they would retract an agreement to hold talks with the city government as proposed by Hong Kong’s leader, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying. “Stop the violence or we call off the talks,” the groups of students and other activists said in a statement. The democracy activists linked arms and held hands as they tried to stand their ground against the huge crowd. Police formed cordons and escorted some of the protesters away as hundreds of onlookers chanted, “Go home!” In Causeway Bay, another area occupied by protesters, groups of young men in face masks were forced away from the protesters by police. Police spokesman Steve Hui appealed to the members of the public to “observe the laws of Hong Kong when they are expressing their views.”

“ When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand. 6 And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” (Revelation) “Come now, you rich, weep and howl for your miseries that are coming upon you! 2 Your riches are corrupted, and your garments are moth-eaten. 3 Your gold and silver are corroded, and their corrosion will be a witness against you and will eat your flesh like fire. You have heaped up treasure in the last days.” (James)

The Solano County patient “suffered from mild symptoms and was not hospitalized,” said the county’s health officer, Dr. Bela Matyas. The youths are the first confirmed patients with the virus in Northern California. There are at least six cases in Southern California and about 500 in 42 states, officials said. More reported cases are expected in the coming weeks.

Headline: Mystery fireball lights up the Utah sky
With dazzling flashes of green, blue and white, a mysterious object lit up the Utah sky early this morning. It silently soared over the state at around 4.40am, seemingly lingering for a few seconds. But while some excitedly rushed to report a UFO, one astronomer claims it was a burning meteor that was so far away it couldn’t be heard. According to Patrick Wiggins, the NASA/JPL solar system ambassador to Utah, the variety of flashing colours is typical of a bolide meteor, which combusts at the end of its flight. It is caused by the rock cooling down as it passes through the atmosphere. Once the bolide explodes, it will likely send pieces hurling down to earth – which could be very valuable. If nearby, the sheer pace of the bolide could be so loud it could crack windows. But Wiggins explained, despite shining brighter than the moon, it was lightyears away because it was silent.

Headline: U.S. holding on to its nukes to blow up asteroids
The Government Accountability Office does its best to keep tabs on all the many moving parts of the federal government, ensuring agencies and programs are spending their money wisely, acting ethically and meeting their performance goals. Suffice to say, they’ve got their hands full. Recently, the GAO checked in on the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), which manages the U.S. atomic-weapons arsenal, to gauge their progress on various disarmament goals. The NNSA is supposed to be destroying old nuclear weapons. They’re not. But even if they’re behind schedule, they’re not without excuses. One of the reasons that a significant supply of uranium-enriched canned subassemblies (CSAs) — used to arm nuclear warheads — have yet to be disposed of, is that they’re being saved “for potential use in planetary defense against earthbound asteroids.”
