diseaseEbola outbreak in Guinea may spread to Liberia

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — An outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus is believed to have killed at least 59 people in Guinea and may already have spread to neighboring Liberia, health officials said Monday. Health workers in Guinea are trying to contain the spread of the disease which causes severe internal bleeding. In neighboring Liberia, health officials said they are investigating five deaths after a group of people crossed the border from Guinea in search of medical treatment. ‘‘The team is already investigating the situation, tracing contacts, collecting blood samples and sensitizing local health authorities on the disease,’’ Liberian Health Minister Walter Gwenigale said. The Ebola virus leads to severe hemorrhagic fever in its victims and has no vaccine or specific treatment. The new cases mark the first time in 20 years that an outbreak of the virus has been reported in West Africa.

Headline:  Time is running out for Netanyahu to decide on prisoner release

Five days before Israel is scheduled to release its fourth batch of security prisoners, Palestinian observers say they expect the Palestinian Authority to turn to the United Nations if Israel fails to adhere to the timetable. “The target date of the fourth stage is a key date that can attest to the intentions of Israel. Any delay or shirking by Israel means a blatant violation of understandings, and the PA will make the appropriate decisions,” said a member of Fatah’s central committee, Mohamed Ashtiya. Israel has already released three-quarters of the 104 prisoners it agreed last July to release in stages, as part of revived peace talks. It was agreed at the time that the release of each group would be contingent on progress in the talks. Haaretz has learned that a team working on behalf of U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has visited Ramallah over the past two days, meeting with their Palestinian counterparts ahead of PA President Mahmoud Abbas’ trip to the Arab League summit in Kuwait. Palestinian observers expect Abbas to use the visit in the Persian Gulf to meet with the Saudi King Abdullah, who will meet Thursday with U.S. President Barack Obama.

Headline:  Hamas would accept peace with Israel, West Bank leader says

A top Hamas official in the West Bank said his hard-line group would accept a peace deal between the Palestinian Authority and Israel should it win approval in a national referendum.  “It is our right to oppose an agreement that [PA President] Mahmoud Abbas brings, like you have your own opposition, but I stress here: we will accept the results of a national referendum and the decision of the majority,” Sheikh Hassan Yousef told The Times of Israel. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas has promised to bring any agreement with Israel to a referendum that would include the Palestinian diaspora. Yousef’s words mark a departure for Hamas, which in the past has rejected any deal with Israel and has refused even to recognize the state. However, Yousef said there could be peace if Israel withdraws to the 1967 lines, which Hamas leaders in the past have said they would accept. “If Israel will accept the rights of our nation and allow the establishment of the Palestinian state with full sovereignty like any other people, in my estimation it is possible there will be peace. However, so far Israel ignores the rights of the Palestinian nation. Hamas agrees to the idea of creating a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with full sovereignty. The occupation forces must leave our lands they occupied in 1967,” he said.

Headline:  Arab League ‘categorically’ refuses to recognize Israel as Jewish state

The Arab League will flatly refuse to recognize Israel as a Jewish state in the final resolution at the end of its two-day summit in Kuwait, which begins Tuesday. Israel has made the demand for recognition a condition of reaching a peace agreement with the Palestinians. According to the draft of the final resolution, obtained by AFP, the Arab states declare their “absolute and categorical refusal to recognize Israel as a Jewish state”. The resolution also “rejects all pressure to this effect on the Palestinian leadership“, a likely reference to American efforts to keep the negotiations going after their April deadline.  The draft resolution will also call on Arab states to provide $100 million in financial aid to the Palestinian Authority every month. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who last week held talks with President Barack Obama at the White House, met the foreign ministers of the League’s 22 member states, to update them on the outcome of the talks, those present at the summit said.

Headline: To get at Obama and Kerry, Arab League summit drafts hard-line ultimatums for Israeli-Palestinian peace track

Arab League summit’s two-day agenda includes a veto on recognizing Israel as the Jewish national state,a resolution that will be binding on all members including Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas. Another resolution would mandate the proclamation of all parts of East Jerusalem, including Al Quds al Sharif (Temple Mount) and the entire Old City of Jerusalem, the location of the shrines of three faiths, as the capital of a Palestinian state. Another ultimatum the Arab leaders propose to issue would halt Jewish settlement on the West Bank and Jerusalem, freeze development and ultimately dismantle all traces of a Jewish presence in a future Palestinian state. Yet another demand will be for “the immediate release of all the Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli jails” – by which they mean all Palestinians serving time after being convicted of terrorist crimes, including Israeli Arabs.

NOTE FROM FRANK 2Take a look at the above highlighted statements in the last two news stories.  Now take a look at this map of the Arab League with tiny Israel surrounded by the members.  Voting in the Arab League must be UNANIMOUS under their charter. What are the chances that the Arab League would draft a resolution about Israel that says almost the SAME things as the UN statement the day before? Not very likely, since we’ve been seeing this past week Abbas threatening to go to the UN, the Arab League or various others if Israel doesn’t do what he wants.

Headline:  ‘Israeli occupation hindering Jordan-led maintenance projects at Al Aqsa’

The Israeli occupation is obstructing progress of the Kingdom’s 13 maintenance projects at Al Aqsa Mosque complex, according to Awqaf Minister Hayel Dawood. “The Kingdom’s custodianship of holy sites in Jerusalem stands in the way of Israeli violations on the holy shrines,” he said on Sunday, describing the role assigned to Jordan as “a hard one”. During a seminar on Jordan’s custodianship of Jerusalem’s Muslim and Christian sites at the Royal Cultural Centre, Dawood added that the Kingdom’s responsibility towards the holy city dates back to the unification of Jordan and the West Bank in 1950.  “When the unification was dissolved in 1988, there was an agreement on sustaining Jordan’s legal, administrative and religious sovereignty over holy sites in Jerusalem, but political sovereignty remained in the hands of the occupation forces,” he said. Ekrima Sabri, former grand mufti of Jerusalem and imam of Al Aqsa Mosque, highlighted Jordan’s “strong stances and continuous support” for holy sites in Jerusalem in spite of little Arab and Islamic attention.

Headline:  More Syrian rockets fall on Lebanon

Two rockets fired from Syria hit Tuesday the outskirts of Hor Taala, near the eastern Lebanese city of Baalbek, security sources said. No casualties or damage were reported following the rocket attack, which took place at 12:50 p.m. Border areas in east and north Lebanon have been frequent targets of aerial and artillery shelling from Syria since the uprising began in the neighboring country three years ago. Lebanon has also seen increasing clashes linked to the Syrian crisis, particularly in the northern city of Tripoli, where scores of people have been killed, and more recently in Beirut.

Headline: Saudi Arabia calls for SNC seat at Arab summit

Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Salman Bin Abdulaziz on Tuesday called on the Arab League to grant the Syrian National Coalition, Syria’s main opposition group, a seat at the summit. The Syrian National Coalition will not fill the Syrian regime’s vacant seat at the summit because it has yet to meet the legal requirements, Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi had earlier said. Salman called for “changing the balance of forces” on the ground in Syria’s civil war, saying the crisis there had reached catastrophic proportions.

Headline:  Clashes spread near Syria’s border with Turkey

Activists say clashes between Syrian rebels and forces loyal to President Bashar Assad are spreading in a key coastal area near the Turkish border. An activist who goes by the name of Abu Salah al-Hafawi says that an array of Islamic rebels groups are fighting government troops near the seaside tourist village of Samra. Rami Abdurrahman of the British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also confirmed the information. Tuesday’s fighting comes after rebels seized the town of Kassab and a nearby border crossing with the same name, severing one of the government’s last links to the Turkish border. Al-Hafawi says if rebels take Samra, they will gain access to the sea for the first time in the conflict, now in its fourth year. He spoke from near Samra via Skype.

AfghanistanHeadline:  Taliban bombers, gunmen hit Kabul Afghanistan election office

The Taliban launched a brazen assault in the Afghan capital on Tuesday, with two suicide bombers detonating their explosives outside an election office on the city’s outskirts and other attackers storming inside the premises. The attack was the latest in the insurgents’ violent campaign against the country’s April 5 presidential polls. Fierce gunfire reverberated across the neighborhood in the early afternoon, as heavily armed troops from the Afghan rapid response force surrounded the office building, located near the home of presidential candidate Ashraf Ghani Ahmadzai. He was not home at the time of the attack, officials said. Police official Sayed Gul Aga Hashmi said the assault on the provincial office of Afghanistan’s Independent Election Commission started with two suicide attackers. One attacker detonated his car and the other set off his explosives’ vest, paving way for at least four other attackers to storm inside the building, said Hashimi, though the precise number of insurgents was not immediately clear. As the battle unfolded, about 20 election workers were trapped inside the building, according to an election commission official who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to media.

Headline:  Transnistria, the breakaway region of Moldova, could be Russia’s next target
Headline:   Ukraine Seeks UN Vote Against Crimea Annexation

When the commander of NATO forces in Europe said Sunday that he was worried about Russian troops moving across Ukraine to Transnistria, he was talking about a sliver of land that has existed largely outside the international system and outside the law for 22 years. U.S. Air Force Gen. Philip M. Breedlove was voicing fears that the small country of Moldova will very soon become Europe’s next crisis point. Separatists who had already come to power in Transnistria more than a year earlier took advantage of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 to break away from Moldova. Transnistria has maintained itself as a Russian-speaking enclave ever since. Russian President Vladimir Putin said last week that his country reserves the right to stand up for ethnic Russians living outside its borders. His remarks came in a speech about Crimea, but that protection could presumably extend to Russians in Moldova as well as in Kazakhstan, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. Moldova has joined with Georgia in agreeing to sign up for a formal trade deal with the European Union — exactly the same deal that Ukraine was headed for last fall until Moscow persuaded it to change course, sparking protests that led to the current situation. Some Transnistrians have been agitating to join Russia. In a 2006 referendum, 96 percent of voters opted for accession, but Moscow turned them down.

Headline:  Ukraine defense chief resigns; troops leave Crimea

Lawmakers in Ukraine accepted the resignation of the defense minister Tuesday as thousands of troops began withdrawing from the Crimean Peninsula, now controlled by Russia. In an address to parliament, Igor Tenyukh said he rejected criticism that he had failed to issue clear instructions to troops, but that he reserved the right to step down. Lawmakers initially refused his resignation, but later accepted it. A majority then voted to appoint Col. Gen. Mikhail Kovalyov as his replacement. Authorities in Ukraine have come under criticism for their often-hesitant reaction to Russia’s annexation of Crimea, which was formalized following a hastily organized referendum this month. In Crimea, Ukrainian soldiers piled onto buses and began their journey to Ukrainian territory on Tuesday, as former comrades saluted them from outside a base overrun by Russian forces. Ukraine’s new government has struggled to exert authority since last month’s overthrow of Russian-supported President Viktor Yanukovych. Officials in Moscow, meanwhile, are warning Kiev that the country’s new government may have to pay more for Russian gas, which is the main part of Ukraine’s energy mix.

Headline:  BRICS rejects sanctions against Russia over Ukraine

The G7 club of wealthy nations has cancelled a summit with Russia over its annexation of Crimea, but emerging economies have protested against its exclusion from a G20 meeting. The G7 leaders – from Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the US – announced the move in a communique published after their meeting in The Hague on Monday (24 March). The June summit, which was to be held in the G8 format with Russia in Sochi, on the Black Sea coast, will now be held in Brussels.  Brazil, China, India, and South Africa rejected the idea. They said, together with Russia, also at The Hague, where almost 60 countries had sent VIPs to a Nuclear Security Summit, that “the escalation of hostile language, sanctions and counter-sanctions … does not contribute to a sustainable and peaceful solution” to the Ukraine crisis. “The custodianship of the G20 belongs to all member states equally and no one member state can unilaterally determine its nature.” With Brazil and China now wealthier than some G7 countries, Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov noted the G7 has lost its monopoly on global governance.

Headline:    World Vision: Why We’re Hiring Gay Christians in Same-Sex Marriages

World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families, and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. World Vision’s American branch will no longer require its more than 1,100 employees to restrict their sexual activity to marriage between one man and one woman. Abstinence outside of marriage remains a rule. But a policy change announced Monday [March 24] will now permit gay Christians in legal same-sex marriages to be employed at one of America’s largest Christian charities. In an exclusive interview, World Vision U.S. president Richard Stearns explained to Christianity Today the rationale behind changing this “condition of employment,” whether financial or legal pressures were involved, and whether other Christian organizations with faith-based hiring rules should follow World Vision’s lead. Stearns asserts that the “very narrow policy change” should be viewed by others as “symbolic not of compromise but of [Christian] unity.” He even hopes it will inspire unity elsewhere among Christians. In short, World Vision hopes to dodge the division currently “tearing churches apart” over same-sex relationships by solidifying its long-held philosophy as a parachurch organization: to defer to churches and denominations on theological issues, so that it can focus on uniting Christians around serving the poor.

Headline: Chileans worry over string of 300 quakes in north

More than 300 earthquakes have shaken Chile’s far-northern coast the past week, keeping people on edge as scientists say there is no way to tell if the unusual string of tremors is a harbinger of an impending disaster. The unnerving activity began with a strong magnitude-6.7 quake on March 16 that caused more than 100,000 people to briefly evacuate low-lying areas, although no tsunami materialized and there was little physical damage from the shaking. But the land has not settled down. More than a dozen perceptible quakes were felt in the city of Iquique just on Monday. “The situation is out of the ordinary. There’s a mix of a string of tremors and their aftershocks that make things more complex to evaluate,” Mario Pardo, deputy head of the Universidad de Chile seismology center, told the local newspaper La Tercera. “We can’t rule out a larger quake.” “The latest string of quakes is noteworthy because the last one happened in this seismic zone more than 130 years ago,” said Paulina Gonzalez, an expert on seismic analysis at the Universidad de Santiago. “It’s a zone where quakes should happen more often, and they haven’t in a very long time.”
