Headline: IDF soldiers come under fire along Syrian border in Golan Heights

An Israeli army unit came under fire Tuesday on the Golan Heights, near the Syrian border. One officer sustained light shrapnel wounds and did not require hospitalization. On Tuesday morning, IDF fired warning shots near Shaaba Farms area on Har Dov after it claimed several people crossed the border. After the warning shots, the people turned back. Lebanon’s al-Manar television station reported Israeli army forces crossed the border fence along the Lebanon border and searched the area some 50 meters inside the territory. The report added it a group of Lebanese intelligence officers who the IDF fired warning shots at, who were accompanied by a filming crew documenting “Israeli violations in the Shaaba Farms area.” Last January, two Israeli soldiers were killed and seven wounded after an anti-tank missile struck an Israel Defense Forces vehicle in the Har Dov area near the Lebanon border.

Headline: Palestinian forces detain 500 Hamas West Bankers, to thwart coup and Abbas assassination plot

Acting on direct orders from Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, Palestinian special forces raided the nine PA-ruled towns of the West Bank in the past 48 hours and detained 500 Hamas suspects, debkafile’s military sources report. Abbas ordered the operation after discovering that Hamas had been hatching a plot for some weeks to stage an armed insurrection against the Palestinian Authority, starting in one of the Palestinian towns – possibly even the PA capital of Ramallah. They would assassinate him in the process of the coup. Of late, Abbas has kept his distance from Ramallah and his seat of government and spends most of his time traveling in foreign countries, especially Arab capitals, where he feels safer under the protection of foreign security services than he does at home. The wave of detentions from Sunday to Tuesday (March 9-10) is the most extensive the Palestinian Authority has ever conducted against Hamas’ West Bank cells. Not only prominent figures and known terror activists were taken into custody but also new figures. Abbas ordered the operation amid a serious dilemma over his personal security. Before him were reports presented by Palestinian Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Majed Faraj revealing the preparations in train for his assassination, an event that would signal mass riots orchestrated by Hamas and Jihad Islami, leading up to the seizure of government from the Palestinian Authority – much as they did in the Gaza Strip. At the same time, Abbas does not entirely trust Palestinian security services or their ability to safeguard him and his regime in Ramallah. He therefore turned to Israel, touching off an IDF response that had nothing to do with Israel’s forthcoming general election on March 17 – as government opponents have claimed.
The 3,000 IDF soldiers plus 10,000 reservists called up this week were not posted on the West Bank to practice anti-riot tactics for putting down Palestinians disturbances against Jewish settlements – as reported. They were placed on the ready in case it was necessary to go into Palestinian towns and save them from being overrun by the radical Hamas and Jihad Islami. The Israeli troops also rehearsed a possible scenario that might ensue from the murder of Mahmoud Abbas.

Headline: Islamic State releases execution video of ‘Mossad spy’

The Islamic State on Tuesday released a video which appeared to show a child execute an East Jerusalem Arab who joined its ranks, and who the radical Islamist group claimed was a Mossad agent. The 13-minute clip released online also listed other people the jihadist group claimed were working for Israeli intelligence. Israeli officials told Reuters that they were aware of the video but hadn’t yet authenticated it. The contents of the video couldn’t be independently verified. In the video, Muhammad Said Ismail Musallam, 20, was seen kneeling in an orange jumpsuit before an armed man and a teenage boy. The boy appeared to shoot Musallam repeatedly with a pistol. The other man, speaking in French, issued a tirade against the Jews, including praise for a recent terrorist attack in Paris in which four Jewish men were killed at a kosher supermarket, and threatened to attack Israel. “O Jews, indeed Allah has gifted us with killing your followers in your own stronghold in France. As for here in the Islamic State, here are the young lions of the Khilafah,” the IS member said, referring to the groups of children the jihadists train to become future fighters. “They will kill the one sent by the foolish Mossad to spy on the secrets of the mujahidin and the Muslims.” The man went on to vow that IS “will liberate Jerusalem from you filth, by Allah’s permission.”

Headline: Palestinian Company Cancels Leviathan Gas Contract

An Israeli partner in the Leviathan offshore gas field said on Wednesday a Palestinian Arab company had cancelled a $1.2-billion supply contract, citing delays by Israel’s Antitrust Authority. Delek said it had informed the Tel Aviv stock exchange that a 20-year contract it had signed with the Palestine Power Generation Co was cancelled by the Arabs on Tuesday, reports AFP. Delek said this was because of “non-fulfillment of the conditions precedent set forth in the agreement, and essentially non-receipt of the approval of the Antitrust Authority, the delay in approving the development plan of the Leviathan project as well as other regulatory approvals required by law.” The statement by Delek said the contract’s cancellation would be effective within 30 days.

Headline: Jordan’s King Abdallah urges EU to fight “Islamophobia”

King Abdallah II of Jordan urged Europeans on Tuesday to fight hostility toward Islam that he said was fueling extremism among Muslims, including those drawn from Europe to fight in the Middle East. Addressing the European Parliament in Strasbourg, Abdallah praised Europe’s “unbeatable courage” in responding to attacks such as those in Paris in January and likened Islamic State to Nazism — “an expansionist ideology based on hatred.” But in calling for cooperation to combat Islamist violence, the king, who attended commemorations for the slain French satirists of Charlie Hebdo but criticized the paper’s use of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), said that European governments must promote “mutual respect” and an “inclusive society.”

Headline:  Hezbollah’s Resistance against Israeli Army among Islamic Revolution’s Miracles

Iran’s top general said Wednesday his country has reached “a new chapter” towards its declared aim of exporting revolution, in reference to Tehran’s growing regional influence, while hailing the role of Hizbullah in resisting Israel. Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of the nation’s powerful Revolutionary Guards Corps, said: “Hizbullah and its resistance against one of the armies in the world — that is to say the army of the Zionist regime.. is one of the Islamic revolution’s miracles,” he said. “It is (part of) the powerful influence of the Islamic system as the helmsman in the region.” “Supporting Lebanon and the Gaza Strip are among the Islamic Republic’s fundamental principles,” he added. His comments come amid concern among some of Shiite Iran’s neighbors about Tehran’s role. “The Islamic revolution is advancing with good speed, its example being the ever-increasing export of the revolution,” he said, according to the ISNA news agency. “Today, not only Palestine and Lebanon acknowledge the influential role of the Islamic republic but so do the people of Iraq and Syria. They appreciate the nation of Iran,” Jafari said in a speech before the Assembly of Experts, Iran’s top clerical body.

Headline:  Saudi King: committed to defend Palestine

Headline: King Salman: Palestinian state tops Saudi demands

Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz said on Tuesday the kingdom was committed to defending Arab and Muslim causes, on top of which was the Palestinian right for an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital. In a televised speech to outline his domestic and foreign policy agenda, King Salman, who ascended the throne after the death of his brother King Abdullah in January, said he would work to strengthen close Arab and Muslim cooperation “purifying the atmosphere and uniting the stance to confront the risks and challenges they face.” He said the kingdom remains committed to “adhering to the international treaties, conventions and charters, including respecting the principle of sovereignty and rejecting any attempt of intervention in our internal affairs.” The monarch stressed that the kingdom will work toward achieving “security and stability in the world, establish the principles of justice and peace along with the commitment to dialogue, resolve differences through peaceful means, and reject the use of force and violence or any actions that threaten international peace and security.”

Headline: Deadly bomb attacks hit Egypt’s Sinai peninsula

Bomb attacks targeting the police and army in Egypt’s restive Sinai peninsula have killed two people and wounded more than 30, officials say. A suicide bomber targeted a police compound in the city of El-Arish, leaving a civilian driver dead. A roadside bomb later exploded beside an armoured vehicle, killing a soldier. Sinai Province, a jihadist group affiliated to Islamic State, claimed it was behind the first attack, the al-Yawm al-Sabaa newspaper reported. In the first attack, the suicide bomber drove a water tanker filled with explosives into the gate at the rear entrance to the police compound in El-Arish shortly after 06:00 (04:00 GMT), security officials said. As the vehicle approached, police fired on it, detonating the explosives inside. The blast killed the bomber and a civilian worker at a nearby electricity company who had been driving by the compound. Shortly after the attack, an army officer was killed and three soldiers were wounded when a roadside bomb exploded beside their armoured vehicle a few kilometres away. Meanwhile, two suspected militants died when a bomb they were transporting on a motorbike exploded in Fayoum, a town south-west of Cairo, security officials told the AP news agency. One of the men was wanted for a previous attack on a police station in Fayoum, they added.

Headline:   Militants Attack Egyptian Checkpoint Near Gaza, Kill Officer

Islamic militants attacked an army checkpoint in northern Sinai near the border with Gaza early on Wednesday, killing an officer, officials said. The attack came as Egypt’s Islamic State affiliate, which is based in the restive peninsula, claimed responsibility for two attacks the previous day. In Wednesday’s attack, militants opened fire on the checkpoint in el-Baraham near the border town of Rafah, triggering a shootout that killed 26-year-old Capt. Ayman Hassan, said medical and security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Headline:   Hamas drones said to enter Egyptian airspace

Headline:   Egypt government appeals court ruling labeling Hamas as ‘terrorist’

Hamas drones reportedly flew out of the Gaza Strip and into Egyptian airspace above the Sinai Peninsula several times last week as the Egyptian army stood by helpless to prevent the incursions. Egyptian radar picked up three drones flying out of the southern Gaza Strip on numerous occasions, the Egyptian Al Osboa newspaper reported. The unmanned aerial vehicles penetrated as far as El Arish and Sheikh Zuweid, some 50 kilometers from the Egypt-Gaza border. Border forces opened fire on the drones but couldn’t hit them because they were flying at an altitude of 750 meters (2,2250 feet), the report said. Under the terms of the 1979 peace deal with Israel, Egypt is not allowed to station any anti-aircraft weapons in the Sinai region, so its forces have been unable to prevent the Hamas activities.

Location of Latakia, Syria

Syria Headline:  Regime in new Latakia campaign

The Syrian regime has launched a new offensive under the cover of heavy aerial bombardment in the northeastern outskirts of Latakia, amid opposition fears of massacres in the mountain region. The government’s latest military campaign, which comes in conjunction with offensives in Aleppo and the south, aims to take the town of Salma, a rebel stronghold approximately 35 kilometers northeast of Latakia. Rebels first seized Salma—one of the Latakia provinces majority Sunni-populated towns—in December 2012, and have since launched a number of operations from the area, which constitutes the insurgent-held front line to Latakia and the Assad family’s hometown of Qardaha. “The regime hopes its campaign… will prevent a repeat of attacks like the recent car bombing in Assad’s hometown of Qardaha, put an end to opposition shelling of pro-regime villages in the coastal region, and protect its Al-Nawba Mountain observation point,” Alaraby Aljadeed reported Tuesday. “If the regime advances beyond [rebel-held mountain areas] the Latakia-Aleppo road will be threatened and, as a result, the regime will have cut off the opposition’s supply line.”

Iraq Headline:   Iraqi Forces Finally Enter ISIS-Controlled Tikrit

Iraq Headline:   Shiite (Iranian) militias, Iraqi forces surround Tikrit

Iraqi forces entered a northern neighborhood of Tikrit Wednesday, marking a new stage in the operation launched 10 days ago to wrest the city back from jihadists, army officers said. “We are now doing combat missions to cleanse the neighborhood of Qadisiyah,” a major general told AFP on condition of anonymity. “We were able to control Tikrit military hospital, which is close to the center of the city,” he said. “But we are engaging in a very delicate battle because we are not facing fighters on the ground, we are facing booby-trapped terrain and sniper fire. Our movement is slow,” the senior officer said. He said the forces that entered Qadisiyah on Wednesday morning included army and police, as well as members of the large volunteer force called Popular Mobilization units. Iraqi forces have been closing in for days but had largely refrained from entering the city, launching only small-scale operations on the edges of Tikrit and laying siege to it. Several other military and political sources confirmed that Iraqi forces had retaken control of a significant part of Qadisiyah, a large neighborhood stretching north of the city center.

Iraq Headline:   ISIS attacks Iraq’s Ramadi with seven car bombs: police

A coordinated Islamic State attack in Ramadi, Iraq, Wednesday, involved seven car bombings, killing 10 and injuring 30. Suburbs of the city of about one half million, 60 miles west of Baghdad, are under IS control, and the near-simultaneous car bombings occurred in government-held parts of the central area, which have come under regular IS attack. Police said fighting, including mortar rounds fired at government’s provincial council headquarters, followed the car bombs. The attacks occurred as IS began an offensive on the strategic town of Ras al-Ain, on the Syria-Turkey border, where forces linked to al-Qaida were expelled in 2013 by Kurdish soldiers. The assault Wednesday initiated intense fighting with the town’s Kurdish militia. “Fighters from the Islamic State group started a huge assault towards Ras al-Ain, and were able to take over a village nearby,” said the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, adding that Ras Al-Ain was under Kurdish control.

Kurdish Headline: Islamic State battling Kurdish forces in northeast Syria

Hundreds of Islamic State fighters have launched an attack on Kurdish forces in northeastern Syria, triggering fierce fighting that has killed dozens on both sides, a group monitoring the war said on Wednesday. The Kurdish YPG militia, backed by U.S.-led air strikes, had made significant gains in recent weeks against Islamic State in the region, cutting an important supply route from territory controlled by the militant group in Iraq. Islamic State appeared to try to seize back the initiative on Tuesday, attacking Kurdish forces using tanks and heavy weapons around Ras al-Ayn town near the Turkish border, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. An official in a Kurdish-run defense council in the area also reported heavy clashes in the area of Ras al-Ayn and said the Kurdish forces had been forced to withdraw from a nearby village. “There are martyrs and dead but the number of martyrs is unknown so far,” said the official, speaking via Skype. The fighting continued into Wednesday. It was not clear exactly how many fighters had been killed on both sides.

Headline:   Kerry Calls for US ‘War Powers’ to Strike ISIS

Secretary of State John Kerry urged lawmakers Wednesday to give President Barack Obama updated war powers to go after Islamic jihadists at “a pivotal hour” in the battle against the terrorists, reports AFP. “Our nation is strongest when we act together – and we simply cannot allow this collection of murderers and thugs to achieve its ambitions,” Kerry told Congress. He said the Islamic State (ISIS) group which has captured a swath of land in Iraq and Syria, wanted to ensure “the death or submission of all who oppose it” as well as “the incitement of terrorist acts across the globe.” Appearing at the Senate foreign relations committee, Kerry as well as Defense Secretary Ashton Carter and the top US military officer, General Martin Dempsey, called for a united vote in favor of a new authorization for use of military force (AUMF) to take on ISIS. Tantamount to a declaration of war, the authority would provide Obama political cover at home and a firmer legal basis on which to prosecute the fight, particularly among allies abroad who have joined a US-led international coalition.

Headline: Russia says has right to deploy nuclear weapons in Crimea: report

Headline: Russia tells West to fear its nuclear arsenal

Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said that Moscow would respond to NATO military buildup near Russian border “in an adequate way.” NATO military buildup near Russia’s border does not contribute to the restoration of trust in the Euroatlantic space, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday. “We have confirmed our stance that military buildup near our border does not contribute to the restoration of trust in the Euroatlantic,” the Russian foreign minister said during a news conference with his Spanish counterpart. Lavrov added that “we are forced to react in an adequate way, but we are sure that these problems need to be solved through an equal dialog based on mutual respect.” Meanwhile, Russia has the right to deploy nuclear arms in the Black Sea peninsula of Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine last year, a Foreign Ministry official said on Wednesday, adding he knew of no plans to do so. “I don’t know if there are nuclear weapons there now. I don’t know about any plans, but in principle Russia can do it,” said Mikhail Ulyanov, the head of the ministry’s department on arms control, was quoted as saying by Interfax news agency.

Headline:   US to send Ukraine small drones, armored Humvees

Vice President Joe Biden told Ukraine’s president Wednesday the U.S. will send more aid to the country, which U.S. officials said will include small drones and armored Humvees. The White House said in a statement that Biden delivered the news in a call to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, while expressing concern that Russian-backed separatists are violating cease-fire agreements in eastern Ukraine and keeping out international monitors. U.S. officials, speaking on a condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to discuss the aid on the record, said the aid includes some small Raven drones systems, which can be launched by hand. The U.S. will also send 30 heavily armored Humvees and 200 other regular Humvees, as well as radios, counter-mortar radars and other equipment. All of the aid is nonlethal, and the drones are not armed. The drones and other equipment, not including the Humvees, are worth about $75 million. It’s not clear how many drones would be sent or what the Humvees cost.

Headline: Kerry: Congress doesn’t have right to change deal with Iran, once signed

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry told U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday they would not be able to modify any nuclear agreement struck between the United States and Iran despite threats by Republican senators. In congressional testimony, Kerry said he responded with “utter disbelief” to an open letter signed by 47 Republican senators that warned that any nuclear agreement would only last as long as U.S. President Barack Obama remains in office. “When it says that Congress could actually modify the terms of an agreement at any time is flat wrong. You don’t have the right to modify an agreement reached executive to executive between leaders of a country,” Kerry told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, which does not include Senator Tom Cotton, the Republican from Arkansas who wrote the letter. The White House slammed the letter as “reckless” and “irresponsible,” warning that it interfered with efforts to negotiate with the Iranians. The negotiations, which resume in Lausanne, Switzerland, next week led by Kerry, are at a critical juncture as the sides try to meet an end of March target for an interim deal, with a final deal in June that would ease crippling sanctions against Iran’s economy.

Headline:   13 killed in separate Afghanistan bomb attacks

At least thirteen people have been killed and tens of others injured when a string of bomb explosions ripped through the northern and southern parts of war-wracked Afghanistan.  A senior police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said one civilian lost his life and 16 others sustained injuries when a bomb exploded near a hospital in Baghlan’s provincial capital city of Puli Khumri, located 230 kilometers (142 miles) north of the capital, Kabul, on Tuesday. The official added that the blast targeted a police vehicle, though no police officer was wounded. Separately, eight people were killed and 23 others wounded when a car bomb blast struck a police checkpoint in Afghanistan’s southern province of Helmand. Omar Zwak, a spokesman for the provincial governor, said the blast took place as a bomber detonated his explosives-laden car near the checkpoint on the outskirts of the provincial capital city of Lashkar Gah, located about 555 kilometers (344 miles) south of the capital, Kabul, on Tuesday. He added that the dead included six civilians and two police officers. In another development of Tuesday, a roadside bombing killed four people and wounded five elsewhere in Afghanistan. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the acts of terror. However, such incidents are usually blamed on Taliban militants.

Headline:   ISIS Finds New Frontier in Chaotic Libya

The Islamic State has established more than a foothold in this Mediterranean port. Its fighters dominate the city center so thoroughly that a Libyan brigade sent to dislodge the group remains camped on the outskirts, visibly afraid to enter and allowing the extremists to come and go as they please. Libya has become a new frontier for the radical group as it comes under increasing pressure from American-led airstrikes on its original strongholds in Iraq and Syria. While other extremists organizations may have sought only to capitalize on the Islamic State’s fearsome name, the contingent here in Surt has not only taken over a major Libyan city but also demonstrated clear coordination with the parent organization, also known as ISIS or ISIL and based in Syria. That close cooperation so far sets the Islamic State group in Surt apart from the wave of other militants who have pledged allegiance to ISIS from Afghanistan, Algeria, Nigeria and Egypt, or even in Libya’s southern and eastern provinces.

The ministry said two Kalashnikov assault rifles and a large quantity of ammunition and explosives was also recovered. Violence involving armed Islamists in Algeria has fallen considerably since the civil war of the 1990s, but groups linked to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb still carry out some attacks, mostly on security forces.

Headline: Turkey shuts border crossings as fighting worsens around Syria’s Aleppo

Turkey has closed two border crossings with Syria as a security precaution as fighting around the northern Syrian city of Aleppo intensifies, Turkish customs and government officials said on Wednesday. The crossings at Oncupinar and Cilvegozu in Turkey’s southern Hatay province have been shut to vehicles and individuals crossing from Syria since Monday, customs officials at both posts told Reuters. “Turkey has some security concerns and it is natural for measures to be taken based on the threat assessment conducted. This is what is also expected by Turkey by the international community,” said an official at a government agency, who declined to be identified. He did not say when the crossing would be reopened.

Headline:     Turkish police use teargas to subdue protesters marking teen’s death

Turkish police on Wednesday fired water cannon and teargas at hundreds of protesters who had gathered to mark the first anniversary of the death of a teenager fatally wounded during anti-government demonstrations. Mainly leftist protesters chanting “Berkin Elvan is immortal” clashed with police in Istanbul and Ankara. Berkin Elvan, 15, was hit in the head by a teargas canister after leaving his house to buy bread during violent anti-government protests that wracked Istanbul in June 2013. He fell into coma and died nine months later on March 11, 2014. His death sparked further protests among those angry over a lack of prosecutions. President Tayyip Erdogan, prime minister at the time of the 2013 protests, said Elvan was linked to “terrorist” groups. In Elvan’s neighborhood of Okmeydani, almost 1,000 protesters marched toward the cemetery where Elvan was buried, then attempted to rush armored police vehicles that fired water cannon. Police chased protesters into side streets using tear gas and rubber bullets, witnesses said. At Gezi Park in central Istanbul – the center of the 2013 protests – police detained eight high-school students who splattered the area in red paint meant to resemble blood and unfurled a banner saying “Berkin is here”. In the capital, Ankara, police detained 11 people who had blocked traffic in the working-class district of Tuzlucayir, Hurriyet newspaper reported on its website. Tuzlucayir is largely inhabited by members of the Alevi faith, as was Elvan.

Headline: Nigeria’s President: Boko Haram Trained with Islamic State

At least seven people have been killed and 17 others injured after two bomb explosions hit a busy market and a nearby commercial street in the northeastern city of Maiduguri in Nigeria’s restive Borno state. “Seven persons died while 17 others were injured. The rescue is still ongoing,” Borno state police commissioner, Clement Adoda, told reporters on Tuesday. Adoda referred to only one blast after initial reports of two explosions at the city’s Monday Market and in a nearby street. Bukar Ali, one of the witnesses, also said “nobody is allowed close to the scenes of the blast.” No one has so far claimed responsibility for the deadly explosions, but they bear the hallmarks of the attacks by Boko Haram Takfiri militant group. Meanwhile, Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan says fighters from insurgent group Boko Haram have traveled to the Middle East for training with Islamic State militants. Jonathan declined to name the countries where the fighters were allegedly trained. But in an interview with VOA Wednesday, he said he’s long suspected Boko Haram of having alliances with international extremist groups. “So we know the links are there. But even now, we may not know the degree of linkages as to how much funds are coming in from them, the kind of volume of weapons coming in from them, the nationalities coming from them,” Jonathan said. “But the training, because some of the Boko Haram members go to have their training in the ISIS camp and come back.”

Two Somali soldiers were killed early Wednesday in an attack by Al-Shabaab armed groups on the southeastern town of Wanlaweyn that is located less than 90km southwest of capital Mogadishu, a local official has said. “The terrorists attacked the town around midnight. Their target seemed to be the police station, which they unsuccessfully tried to burn down. We lost two of our soldiers in the fighting ” local government official Mohamed Sheikh told. Sheikh asserted that the armed group members had briefly assumed control of the town before being repulsed by Somali troops. Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab, on the group’s website, said five government soldiers had been killed in the Wanlaweyn attack. The group also said its fighters had freed a number of prisoners and made off with two police vehicles after successfully torching the police station.

A powerful bomb blast struck a crowded marketplace in India’s restive northeast Wednesday killing four people and injuring another 15, officials said. The blast shook the heart of Imphal, state capital of Manipur, which borders Myanmar — an area that has been plagued by separatist violence for decades. “Most of the victims were either shoppers or vendors,” senior state police official A.K. Singh told AFP by phone from Imphal, adding that “a powerful IED (improvised explosive device) was planted.” “The injured have been shifted to the local medical college hospital, with at least six of them having serious multiple injuries,” Singh said. Hospital officials said four bodies had been recovered from the blast site. No rebel group has claimed responsibility for the attack and it was not immediately clear what the motive was.

Headline:  Greece threatens to seize German property, Berlin refuses to pay WWII reparations

Germany once again dismissed Greek demands to pay reparations for the 1941-44 Nazi occupation of Greece. “It is our firm belief that questions of reparations and compensation have been legally and politically resolved,” said Steffen Seibert, the spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel. “We should concentrate on current issues and, hopefully, what will be a good future,” Reuters reported him as saying. A spokesman for the finance ministry said there was no point in holding talks with the Greek government concerning the issue of reparations. The spokesman also added that the demands from Athens were just trying to distract attention away from the serious financial problems the country is facing. With Germany refusing to budge from its position concerning the payment of war reparations, Greece’s Justice Minister said Wednesday that Athens could start seizing German assets. Nikos Paraskevopoulos said he was “ready to approve” a Greek Supreme Court ruling in 2000 that would allow the appropriation of assets belonging to Germany’s archaeological school and the Goethe Institute. Proceeds from the property would be used to compensate the relatives of 218 civilians who were massacred by Nazi troops in a village in central Greece in June 1944. “The law states that the minister must give the order for the Supreme Court ruling to be carried out…. I am ready to give that order,” Paraskevopoulos told Antenna TV, AFP reported.

Headline: Euro heading for dollar parity

The euro is set to hit parity with the US dollar in the coming weeks as a combination of quantitative easing and fears over a Greek exit from the eurozone continues to fuel a plunge in its value. The euro has lost 10 percent against the dollar and the pound sterling since January. This has largely been attributed to the European Central Bank’s recently launched €1.1 trillion quantitative easing (QE) programme, which will pump an extra €60 billion into the eurozone economy every month until September 2016, alongside renewed fears that Greece could be forced out of the single currency bloc. At the close of trading on Tuesday (10 March), one euro was worth $1.07 and £0.71 respectively, its lowest rate against the dollar since September 2003 and lowest level against the pound since 2007. Market analysts expect the euro to slide further against the greenback because the ECB’s bond-buying programme is expected to be accompanied by the first interest rate rise in the US since the 2008-9 financial crisis. The falling euro is also putting increasing pressure on Denmark to follow the lead set by Switzerland last month and abandon rules capping its kroner currency to the euro, as the kroner becomes too strong to maintain the link. The euro lost nearly 20 percent of its value in a day against the Swiss franc after the Swiss national bank abandoned a three year cap on the franc’s value against the single currency in mid-January.

Headline:  China may be ending dollar’s hold on reserve currency as early as September

On March 9, sources within China provided new information that validates that the Far Eastern economy is now ready to compete with, or even supplant, the dollar as the sole global reserve currency as early as September of this year. Having already completed a message interchange system that mirrors the same one in the West, the Chinese equivalent of SWIFT is now ready and is expected to be fully operational by the 3rd quarter of 2015, which will allow other nations to transact with the world’s largest economy without the need to purchase dollars as a medium of exchange. Additionally, there has been a great deal of speculation over the past two years that China might back their currency with gold once they are fully ready to float it as a global reserve, with strong indications showing that at the very least, China will be calling for the use of international letters of credit or trade notes that are backed by gold to help stabilize transactions using this historical form of sound money.

Headline:   Economist Tells Congress: U.S. May Be in ‘Worse Fiscal Shape’ Than Greece

The U.S. has a $210 trillion “fiscal gap” and “may well be in worse fiscal shape than any developed country, including Greece,” Boston University economist Laurence Kotlikoff told members of the Senate Budget Committee in written and oral testimony on Feb. 25. “The first point I want to get across is that our nation is broke,” Kotlikoff testified. “Our nation’s broke, and it’s not broke in 75 years or 50 years or 25 years or 10 years. It’s broke today. “Indeed, it may well be in worse fiscal shape than any developed country, including Greece,” he said. (See Kotlikoff—Testimony-to-Senate-Budget-Committe.pdf) In January, Fitch downgraded Greece, whose debt-to-Gross Domestic Product (GDP) ratio is 175 percent, from Stable to Negative. “This declaration of national insolvency will, no doubt, shock those of you who use the officially reported federal debt as the measuring stick for what our country owes,” Kotlikoff told committee members who are considering President Obama’s proposed budget for Fiscal Year 2016.

Headline:   Dow plunges 333 points

U.S. stocks closed more than 1.5 percent lower on Tuesday, pressured by a surge in the dollar and some weakness in oil. The Dow Jones industrial average fell more than 300 points to below the index’s 50-day moving average, wiping out gains for the year. The S&P 500 also traded in the red for the year and breached its 50-day moving average, which is an indicator of the market trend. Only the Nasdaq held onto gains of about 3 percent for the year. There’s “concern that energy and the strength in the dollar will somehow be negative for the equities,” said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities. He noted that the speed of the dollar’s surge was the greatest market driver, amid mixed economic data and concerns about the Federal Reserve raising interest rates.

Public health officials across the West Coast are urging medical professionals to look out for cases of ocular syphilis – a sexually transmitted disease that can cause blindness – after two potential cases in Los Angeles recently. On Thursday, the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health issued an advisory for primary and eye-care providers to look out for symptoms associated with the disease, which is usually a complication of primary or secondary syphilis infections. With more than a dozen cases – most of them among gay men – reported between Seattle and San Francisco and now potentially two in Southern California, the AIDS Healthcare Foundation is calling for medical professionals to do more. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, California’s syphilis rate was second in the country behind only Georgia. Los Angeles also had the highest number of primary and secondary cases of syphilis of any county in the U.S. in 2013, the CDC reported.

A public health spokesman said no details about the health care worker’s condition would be released. Two British nurses who contracted the disease while treating patients in Sierra Leone last year survived after being brought back to Britain for specialist treatment. Contingency plans have called for infected British health care workers to be transferred to London for treatment in a special unit at the Royal Free Hospital.

Headline: Mutating H7N9 bird flu may pose pandemic threat, scientists warn

A wave of H7N9 bird flu in China that has spread into people may have the potential to emerge as a pandemic strain in humans, scientists said on Wednesday. The H7N9 virus, one of several strains of bird flu known to be able to infect humans, has persisted, diversified and spread in chickens across China, the researchers said, fuelling a resurgence of infections in people and posing a wider threat. “The expansion of genetic diversity and geographical spread indicates that, unless effective control measures are in place, H7N9 could be expected to persist and spread beyond the region,” they said in a study published in the journal Nature. The H7N9 bird flu virus emerged in humans in March 2013 and has since then infected at least 571 people in China, Taipei, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Canada, killing 212 of them, according to February data from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Headline: Virus behind swine flu in India mutates into more dangerous form: study

An outbreak of swine flu in India has killed over 1,500 people, and U.S. scientists warned Wednesday that the virus behind the outbreak has acquired mutations that make it more dangerous than previously circulating strains of H1N1 influenza. The findings, published in the U.S. journal Cell Host & Microbe, contradicted previous reports from Indian health officials that the strain has not changed from the North American version of H1N1 that emerged in 2009 and has been circulating around the world ever since. “It has been extensively reported in India that a virus similar to A/California/07/2009 is responsible for the current outbreak,” study author Ram Sasisekharan, professor of Biological Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), said in a statement. “Examination of the Indian H1N1 flu viruses that circulated in 2014 shows amino acid mutations that make them distinct from the A/ California/07/2009 virus.”

Headline: Italy sets new world one-day snowfall record

The next time the people of Capracotta, Italy, hear the folks in Boston complain about a snow season of more than 100 inches, they’ll be like: “That’s nice. We’ve been known to get that much in one day.” In 18 hours, actually. It’s not an official record yet, but it looks like the Italian village got 100.8 inches (256 centimeters) on Thursday, setting the all-time mark for most snow in 24 hours. Pescocostanzo, about 21 miles (34.6 kilometers) away, only got 94.5 inches (240 cm). That’s more than Boston got in January and February combined, but just short of the 107.9 inches the city totaled so far for the whole season. One of the photos posted on MeteoWeb, the Italian weather website that reported the immense snowfall, showed a resident standing on top of the accumulation shaking hands with a neighbor. She is in a second-story window. The town, which has about 1,000 residents and sits at an altitude of 4,662 feet (1,421 meters), is prone to heavy one-day snowfalls, MeteoWeb reported. You might conclude it’s in the Italian Alps given all that snow, but that’s not the case. It’s about a three-hour drive east of Rome, roughly halfway down the Italian Peninsula, not far from the Adriatic Sea. But it is in the mountains and is vulnerable to weather coming from the northeast. The World Meteorological Organization will confirm whether the snowfall actually surpassed the 24-hour snowfall record — 75.8 inches — from Silver Lake, Colorado, set in 1921.
