Headline:  IDF strikes Hamas in Gaza after terrorists’ gunfire and rocket attacks

Israel strikes Hamas positions in Gaza after terrorists shot at an IDF unit operating on the border fence with Gaza, damaging an army vehicle. Palestinian terrorists fired at an IDF unit operating on the border fence with the Gaza Strip on Wednesday. No Israelis were harmed in the attack, but an IDF tractor was hit. This attack comes just hours after Palestinian terrorists fired a rocket from Gaza at Israel’s civilian population. The rocket exploded in an open space, causing no casualties or damage. It was the second rocket attack from Gaza this week and the fifth attack in the past month. In total, terrorists fired nine rockets at Israel over this time period. In response,  Israel’s Air Force (IAF) and an IDF tank bombed two Hamas positions in Gaza.

Headline:     UN chief urged to add IDF to blacklist

A network of humanitarian organizations urged the United Nations to add the IDF to the blacklist of countries and armed groups responsible for grave violations against children. Formed in 2001, Watchlist on Children and Armed Conflict released its annual report ahead of the release of the United Nations’ annual report on children and armed conflict. The United Nations’ report, which contains the blacklist, is usually released in May or June. Watchlist recommended that 11 parties be added to the blacklist, and that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres collect further information on several others, including on the Popular Front of the Liberation of Palestine and the armed wing of Hamas, Izzadin Kassam, to determine whether or not they should be included in next year’s report. The network’s explanation focused on the 2014 Operation Protective Edge, fought between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, stating that “attacks in Gaza have not ceased.” The IDF was kept off the list in 2015 after lobbying by the US and Israel. The section on Israeli offenses is nine pages long, while the sections on PFLP and Izzadin Kassam are one and three paragraphs long, respectively. According to Watchlist, it has recommended listing the IDF since 2005 for “killing and maiming children and attacking schools and hospitals in Gaza and the West Bank.”

Headline:     Is the ‘Rising Tide’ of American Anti-Semitism Only a Surge in Incident Reporting?

Headline:  Jewish cemetery vandalized in Rochester, NY

Headline:  Arrest made in national threats to Jewish community centers

Dozens of bomb threats have been called into Jewish institutions since early January, and scores of headstones at two Jewish cemeteries—one near St. Louis, the other in Philadelphia— were desecrated in February. But is there actually a rising tide of anti-Semitism in America? Despite the threats and attacks, positive feelings between different American religious groups are on the rise, as measured in mid-to-late January by the well-respected and non-partisan Pew Foundation. Additionally, far more damaging anti-Semitic incidents took place throughout the preceding decade and a half than the ones garnering attention in recent weeks. During the past two months, there have been nearly 100 documented acts of anti-Semitism across North America, including at least 90 bomb threats—mostly at Jewish community centers (JCCs)—and the two cemetery attacks. Running parallel to these anti-Jewish hate crimes has been a groundswell of anger directed at President Donald Trump for allegedly failing to swiftly or sufficiently denounce anti-Semitism. Some critics have labeled the president an anti-Semite and claimed he is responsible for unleashing a wave of religious hatred.

Headline:     Abbas to visit Moscow in May

Palestinian Authority (PA) chairman Mahmoud Abbas will reportedly visit Moscow in May, the Ma’an news agency reported Thursday, citing the PA’s envoy to Russia Abd al-Hafith Nawfal said on Wednesday. Nawfal was quoted as having said that Abbas would discuss the Israel-Arab peace process with Russian officials, as well as the United States’ stance on the conflict. Russia has expressed an interest in mediating Israel-Palestinian Authority peace talks which have been frozen for more than two years. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said several months ago that Russian President Vladimir Putin wanted to host an Israeli-Palestinian summit to revive the talks. Several days later, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Putin held a telephone conversation in which they discussed the peace process, among other things, though a Kremlin spokesman later clarified there was “nothing concrete” yet on a meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu. Most recently, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said his country is waiting for Israeli and Palestinian Arab proposals on holding a direct meeting between Abbas and Netanyahu.

Headline:  Chief Rabbi Sets Value for Biblical Half-Shekel, Paving the Way for the Temple’s Comeback

In another essential step forward towards practically bringing the Third Temple, the Chief Sephardi Rabbi of Israel has set the current value of the Biblical half shekel every Jewish male was required to give to the Temple. This mitzvah (Torah commandment), performed in a merely symbolic manner for 2,000 years, is making a rapid comeback in many ways. Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef issued a letter on Wednesday in response to inquiries from the public as to what sum to give to charity as a gesture symbolizing the Biblical commandment. In the days of the Temple, every male in Israel was obligated to donate a half-shekel of silver in the beginning of the month of Adar, which began on Wednesday. Based on the present market value of silver, Rabbi Yosef set the value of the Biblical half shekel at 23 NIS, or $6.23. The rabbi addressed the modern tradition of giving charity in place of this donation, which in Biblical times was used to pay for the operating expenses of the Temple. “Wise men throughout the generations have been accustomed to commemorate this mitzvah,” Rabbi Yosef wrote in the letter. “But it is important to say that the money is a donation and not an atonement. Similarly, when giving the money, it is important to emphasize that it is in memory of the mitzvah, and not the actual mitzvah. As such, the giving of this money in our times is not a requirement or a mitzvah.”

Headline:      Hizballah lists targeted Israeli “nuclear sites”

Hizballah’s latest round of threats against Israel reached a new peak Thursday, March 2, with the release of a videotape claiming to expose nine locations allegedly tied to the production and assembly of Israel’s nuclear weapons, debkafile reports. The Lebanese Shiite terror organization said it possessed precise missiles for wiping out Israel’s nuclear infrastructure and attached addresses to all its targets. Five locations topped the list, starting with the nuclear reactors at Dimona in southern Israel and Nahal Soreq on the Mediterranean coast. “Revealed” next are three secret locations for the production, assembly and storage of nuclear missiles and warheads. Kfar Zacharia near Beit Shemesh in the Jerusalem Hills, defined as the main depot for the Jericho Series I, II and III, of three-stage ballistic missiles, which can reach ranges of up to 6,000km. Two others were a factory in Beer Yaakov near the central Israeli town of Ramleh, the alleged production site for nuclear warheads; and the “Galilee Wing-20” plant at the Tefen Industrial Park, 17km from the town of Carmiel, a facility where the Rafael Advanced Defense System Authority was said to mount nuclear warheads on ballistic missiles and prepare them for launching. The video stresses that Hizballah now possesses precise missiles able to pinpoint and destroy every single facility. Just two weeks ago, Nasrallah “advised” Israel in an aggressive speech, to dismantle its large ammonia tank in Haifa and the nuclear reactor in Dimona before they were hit by Hizballah rockets and caused massive casualties. He and his associates have repeatedly warned in recent weeks that their Lebanese terrorist group has acquired weapons capable of deterring Israel as well as the capability to catch Israeli intelligence unawares by “surprises.”

Headline:  Saudi Arabia: Houthis using children in armed conflict

US air strikes have hit suspected al-Qaeda targets in Yemen for a second consecutive day, according to Yemeni security sources and local residents. Local residents, quoted by AFP news agency, said military forces believed to be US descended on Wadi Yashbum village early on Friday, backed by drones and Apache helicopters, and fought al-Qaeda militants for nearly an hour. They said there were a number of casualties, including children. The home of al-Qaeda provincial commander Saad Atef was among three houses hit by air strikes, tribal sources said. The Pentagon has not yet confirmed the latest strikes, but it did say it had carried out more than 20 strikes on Thursday in three separate areas: Shabwa, Abyan and Baida.

Headline:     Former Egyptian President Mubarak acquitted of killing 239 protesters

Former Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak, originally sentenced to life in prison for murdering 239 demonstrators who protested against his rule, was declared innocent by Egypt’s highest court. Egypt’s supreme court, the Court of Cassation, found former President of Egypt, Hosni Mubarak, innocent of charges for the killing of 239 protesters during an 18-day revolt that ousted him from power in early 2011. “The court has found the defendant innocent,” said Judge Ahmed Abdel Qawi on Thursday. Mubarak was originally sentenced in 2012 to life in prison for conspiracy to murder 239 demonstrators who had revolted against his rule. His conviction was overturned by an appeals court in 2013 that led to his retrial in which a Cairo court dropped charges against Mubarak and his senior officials. The prosecution filed an appeal leading to Thursday’s ruling by Egypt’s Court of Cassation.

Headline:     Syria rebels urge Trump to correct Obama’s “catastrophic mistakes”

Headline:  Syrian opposition accepts UN principles at end of peace talks

The lead Syrian opposition negotiator at peace talks in Geneva said he hoped U.S. President Donald Trump would correct the “catastrophic” errors of his predecessor Barack Obama to become a reliable partner against “devilish” Iran. The U.N.-led negotiations edged forwards on Wednesday, for the first time in six days, as both sides saw hope of shaping the agenda to their liking, but with indirect talks wrapping up this weekend there is little prospect of any real breakthrough. “The people in Syria paid a high price because of the catastrophic mistakes made by the Obama administration,” Nasr al-Hariri told reporters in a briefing after meeting U.N. mediator Staffan de Mistura. “Obama lied and he didn’t keep any of the promises he made for the Syrian people. He drew red lines that he erased himself, he kept silent on crimes committed by Bashar al-Assad.” Trump has said his priority is to fight Islamic State, which has left Russia in the diplomatic driving seat and put Russia, Turkey and Iran in charge of overseeing a shaky ceasefire. He has also made it clear he wants to rein in Tehran’s regional ambitions. Trump’s administration has so far done little to suggest it is willing to engage in finding a political solution for Syria. “Their policy is still unknown,” said a Western diplomat at the talks. “They are almost not here.”

Russia on Thursday said President Bashar al-Assad‘s Syrian Arab Army has retaken the ancient city of Palmyra from the Islamic State with the help of the Russian Air Force. Dmitry Peskov, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman, said Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu told Putin that Assad’s regime freed the historic city from Islamic State control. Syrian Army specialists are working to remove mines from the city and Assad’s regime is fortifying defenses around Palmyra to prevent a counterattack by the Islamic State, officials said. “The flag of the Islamic State terrorist group has been removed from the city of Palmyra,” Andrey Krasov, deputy head of the Russian Duma’s defense commitee, said Thursday. “It should be viewed as a joint success of the Russian Air Force and the Syrian military. Shortly, the whole territory of Syria will be liberated from the terrorists.”

Armed clashes between the Free Syrian Army and the Syrian Democratic Forces show no signs of abating in and near the northern Syrian city of Manbij, Hidar Menbic, commander of the Manbij Military Council, told Sputnik Turkey. In an interview with Sputnik Turkey, Hidar Menbic, commander of the Manbij Military Council, pointed to the increasing intensity of armed clashes between Free Syrian Army (FSA) militants and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in and near the northern Syrian city of Manbij. Earlier this week, the Manbij Military Council, which is part of the SDF, captured a FSA tank on the outskirts of the city, media reports said. With armed clashed between the FSA and SDF on the increase, the civilian population has reportedly begun to flee the area and American soldiers and armored vehicles have been deployed to the north and west of Manbij. He confirmed that the US servicemen have been deployed to Manbij in a bid to prevent clashes between the warring sides. Menbic added that thus far, the US military had used arms against neither FSA forces nor Turkey.

Headline:          Red Cross says seven treated for exposure to toxic agents near Mosul

Five children and two women are receiving treatment for exposure to chemical agents near the Iraqi city of Mosul, where Islamic State is fighting U.S.-backed Iraqi forces, the International Committee of the Red Cross said on Friday. The ICRC “condemns in the strongest possible terms the use of chemical weapons during fighting around the Iraqi city of Mosul”, it said in a statement. The agency’s statement did not say which side used the chemical agents that caused blisters, redness in the eyes, irritation, vomiting, and coughing. The United States has warned that Islamic State could use weapons containing sulfur mustard agents to repel the offensive on the northern Iraqi city. ICRC medical teams were supporting local medical teams treating the seven patients, who were admitted over the past two days to Rozhawa hospital in Erbil, east of Mosul, the organization said. The Islamic State used chemical weapons at least 52 times in Iraq and Syria and at least 19 times in the areas around Mosul between 2014 and November 2016, according to data collected by IHS Markit. The ICRC had reinforced 13 medical centers in areas surrounding Mosul, some with capacity to treat gas attacks victims, ahead of the offensive that started in October.

Headline:  PMU threatens to break all Peshmerga sieges on Yazidi people

The predominately Shi’ite Popular Mobilization Units (PMU) has announced that they will conduct operations against the Peshmerga and ISIS who are besieging the Yazidi people in Iraq’s Sinjar region. This follows on from this morning’s events where clashes between the Rojava Peshmerga who are loyal to Iraqi Kurdistan’s President Masou Barzni, and the Yazidi Shingal Resistance Units (YBS), who are trained by the Turkey based Kurdistan Workers Party and oppose Barzani’s relations with Turkish President Erdogan. The ensuing fight left at least four Peshmerga fighters taken prisoner by the Yazidi Units while one YBS fighter has been killed and three injured in clashes, Kom News reported. The PMU highlighted on their Twitter that the Peshmerga attack on the Yazidis was unprovoked, and will pay a heavy price for betraying them. The militia that has been one of the most effective fighting forces in fighting ISIS, then announced their consideration of new operations to dismantle all Peshmerga and ISIS siege on the Yazidi people. This is the first time in which Barzani’s forces has been directly threatened by the PMU.

Headline:   Turkey says Berlin working against bid to boost Erdogan powers

Headline:  ‘Learn to behave’: Ankara outraged over Germany’s cancelation of Turk rallies

Turkey on Friday accused Germany of working for a “No” vote ahead of an April referendum on whether to boost President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s powers in an executive presidency. “They don’t want Turkey to campaign here, they are working for a ‘No’. They want to get in the way of a strong Turkey,” Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu told reporters in Ankara after German local authorities blocked rallies where Turkish ministers were due to speak. The Turkish public will vote on April 16 on whether to create a system which Ankara says will be like that of France and the United States and ensure political stability. However, critics say the system will weaken parliament further and lead to one-man rule. Tensions have increased in recent days between Turkey and Berlin after Ankara’s provisional detention of a German journalist on terrorism-related charges on Monday.

Iran

Headline:  Arab Nations Face Stark Choice: Israel or Iran

Two very different dialogue proposals are on the table for the Arab states of the Persian Gulf, one from a historic enemy, Israel, proposed in conjunction with a crucial partner, the United States. The other is from a historic rival, Iran, which shares the same neighborhood and faith. The choice the Arab countries ultimately make could determine the future peace and prosperity of the region. On February 15, President Donald Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House and during a press conference, both leaders hinted at an approaching Arab-Israeli cooperation. A few days later, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif reiterated Iran’s previously proposed regional platform for dialogue between the Islamic Republic and its Persian Gulf neighbors during a speech at the Munich Security Conference. The U.S.-Israel proposal encompasses almost all Arab States, including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and other members of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as Egypt, Jordan and possibly Lebanon and Tunisia. This proposal’s principal objective is a wider Arab-Israeli peace agreement and an end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. However, the key selling point behind this initiative is mutual concerns regarding Iran, and the proposal has a goal to present a unified front against the Islamic Republic. The primary goal of Iran’s proposal is to decrease tensions and increase cooperation between neighbors. “The forum can promote understanding under a broad spectrum of issues, including confidence and security building measures, and combating terrorism, extremism, and sectarianism,” Zarif said. “It could also encourage practical cooperation in areas ranging from the protection of the environment to join investments and tourism. Such a forum could eventually develop into a more formal non-aggression and security cooperation arrangements.” This proposal is not new. Zarif put it forward shortly after finalizing the nuclear deal in an article on Al-Monitor titled “Choose your neighbors before your house,” and traveled to Qatar and Kuwait shortly afterward.

Senior Taliban officials say a suspected American drone strike has killed a key Taliban commander who told captured U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl “Don’t come back to Afghanistan” moments before releasing him to the U.S. military in a prisoner swap three years ago. The U.S. military, however, told VOA Friday, “Neither U.S. forces Afghanistan nor Resolute Support conducted any strikes in Pakistan or in border areas of Afghanistan on Thursday.” Taliban sources confirmed Friday that slain Qari Abdullah Mairaj was among two men hit by what the Taliban believes were U.S. missiles the previous day in the southeastern Afghan province of Khost, bordering Pakistan. The insurgent group agreed to free Bergdahl after nearly five years in captivity in exchange for five Taliban members from the U.S. detention center in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Headline:         East Libyan forces clash with rivals near oil ports

East Libyan forces said they carried out air strikes and clashed with rival factions on Friday close to major oil terminals as they sought to fend off the latest challenge to their control of the ports. The strikes were carried out south of the coastal town of Nawfiliya in response to an attack by the Benghazi Defense Brigades (BDB), according to spokesmen for the eastern air force and for the local Petroleum Facilities Guard (PFG). A military spokesman said the attack had been repelled. Nawfiliya is about 50 km (30 miles) west of the oil port Es Sider and 75 km (50 miles) west of another terminal, Ras Lanuf. An oil official at Ras Lanuf said the port was under PFG authority but that there was fighting close to Es Sider. A second port source said operations at the ports had not been affected. Es Sider and Ras Lanuf are among four ports that the eastern-based Libyan National Army (LNA) took control of in September.

Headline:       Berlin truck attack prompts accord between Germany, Tunisia

Tunisia agreed Friday to speed its acceptance of 1,500 citizens whose asylum applications were rejected by Germany, accepting a 250-million-euro ($264 million) loan to help develop rural regions and create jobs for young people. The agreement between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Tunisian President Beji Caid Essebsi comes in the wake of the fatal attack in Berlin carried out by a Tunisian who drove a truck into a Christmas market, killing 12 and injuring dozens of others. Anis Amri’s asylum request was rejected, but Germany has said Tunisian bureaucratic delays meant he hadn’t yet been expelled. Amri, who was later shot dead in Italy, had pledged fealty to the Islamic State group. Merkel said she and Essebsi agreed Friday that the identities of some 1,500 Tunisian asylum-seekers rejected by Germany would be resolved by Tunisia within 30 days. Germany will help Tunisia set up a registration system, and identity papers are expected to be issued within a week. The two leaders did not specify whether the accord would only deal with people believed to be illegal migrants or also those suspected of radicalization. But Merkel evoked the chaos in neighboring Libya and said Germany would contribute to a system of surveillance on the 500-kilometer (300-mile) border Tunisia and Libya share.

Algeria & Morocco

Headline:         Western Sahara: An Isolated Algeria Could Spark a War with Morocco

While Morocco has made all the right moves to avoid a military clash with the Polisario militia near the Mauritanian borders, it fell short of communicating to the UN the true nature of the conflict and magnitude of the Algerian military’s role in perpetuating the hostilities in the Western Sahara. The fragility of peace in North West Africa is probably the worst it has been since Morocco and Algeria tried to patch-up their differences in 1989. While all indications corroborate that neither Rabat nor Algiers aims for an armed conflict, a future, albeit unlikely, rekindling of hostilities in the Western Sahara will certainly turn into an open war between Morocco and Algeria. Diplomats and military analysts consider the recent events in  the Guerguerat region ,the “no man’s land” of the Western Sahara, as the biggest threat to the UN brokered peace agreement of 1991. As Mauritania keeps it distance from Morocco and ignore the deteriorating security situation on its Northern borders and the Polisario continues to wrestle with a restless civilian population in its refugee camps in Algeria, the fear of an unintended resumption of fighting is present and real.

Headline:    Republican officials take aim at progressive protests

Headline:  Barack Obama’s close confidante Valerie Jarrett has moved into his new DC home, which is now the nerve center for their plan to mastermind the insurgency against President Trump

Earlier this week, Donald Trump rolled out an interesting new conspiracy theory: the progressive protests that have unfolded in the wake of his election, the Republican president said, are his predecessor’s fault. “I think that President Obama is behind it,” Trump told Fox News. On Tuesday, Deputy White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders fielded some questions from reporters, one of whom asked if Trump has any “tangible evidence” to back up his conspiracy theory. Sanders said she’d let the president comment “stand for itself.” Pressed further, Sanders added, “Look, I think the bottom line here is that we’ve all condemned the protests. I think that that’s the bigger story here.” It was a curious choice of words. Americans have gathered to express political dissent and White House officials want everyone to know they’ve “condemned the protests”? Why exactly would they do that? Worse, away from the DC Beltway, Republican policymakers aren’t just condemning protests; they’re exploring deliberate steps to try and block them from happening. The New York Times reported today: In a season rife with demonstrations over immigration, pipelines, abortion, women’s rights and more, Republican legislators in at least 16 states have filed bills intended to make protests more orderly or to toughen penalties against ones that go awry. Republicans in two other states, Massachusetts and North Carolina, have said they will file protest-related bills. Those numbers include only bills whose sponsors have specifically linked them to protests, said Jonathan Griffin, a policy analyst who tracks the measures at the National Conference of State Legislatures…. [I]nterviews and news reports suggest that some of the measures are either backed by supporters of President Trump or are responses to demonstrations against him and his policies.

Headline:     Suicide Bombers Destroy Fuel Tankers in Nigeria

Three suicide bombers set ablaze three fuel tankers in the center of Nigeria’s northeastern city of Maiduguri before dawn Friday, officials said, just days before a planned visit by the U.N. Security Council. The attack, outside a gas station opposite the northeastern headquarters of the Central Bank of Nigeria, killed the three bombers, said Abdulkadir Ibrahim, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency. Officials blamed Boko Haram insurgents who many times have attacked Maiduguri, the birthplace of Nigeria’s homegrown Islamic extremist group. Ibrahim said fires caused by the explosions were under control. One bomber exploded beside a stationary tanker loaded with fuel, killing the two accomplices and setting ablaze two other tankers, Ibrahim said. “We are lucky. Today could have been another sad day for us in Maiduguri,” police commissioner Damian Chukwu told reporters at the scene. Chukwu said he and others assumed the attackers’ intended destination was just down the road — a depot storing fuel that has been targeted many times in the past. The attack comes just days before the U.N. Security Council is expected in Maiduguri as part of a four-nation tour of countries in the Lake Chad Basin devastated by the seven-year Boko Haram uprising that has killed more than 20,000.

In what has been called a “visa war,” the European Union’s parliament on Thursday called on the bloc to force American tourists visiting Europe to first obtain visas because the U.S. excludes five EU countries from its no-visa policy. The Wall Street Journal reported that the request is unlikely to change policy, but reflects “hostility among some European politicians to the Trump administration.” The report said Parliament’s vote came six weeks into Trump’s presidency and after the legislature publically slammed Trump’s executive order banning travelers from seven Muslim-majority countries. U.S. citizens can travel to all EU countries without visas but the U.S. hasn’t granted visa-free travel to citizens of Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Poland and Romania. The legislature urged the European Commission to act within two months. The Commission was legally bound to propose by last April that visas be reintroduced for U.S. citizens for 12 months but the 28-nation bloc’s member countries preferred to take no action.

Headline:  South Korea Impeachment Intensifies Divide Over THAAD

Headline:  South Korean Stocks Fall on Fears of Chinese Tourism Ban

Beijing’s escalating condemnation of South Korea over a U.S. anti-missile system has triggered protests against a popular retail giant and a reported ban on Chinese tour groups visiting the country, apparent signs that Beijing plans to make Seoul pay an economic price over a move that China says threatens its security. Protests have sprung up in the last few days against Lotte Mart, a South Korean hypermarket chain that sells food, clothing, toys and electronics. Its parent company, Lotte Group, agreed Monday to provide a golf course to the government to site the system. The protests outside Lotte stores and boycotts of its products follow weeks of condemnation of the South Korean government and warnings against Lotte’s move by government officials and state media. Seoul and Washington say the system is needed to defend against North Korea’s missile threat and is not targeted at any other regional states. China says the Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense, or THAAD, threatens its security because its radars are capable of peering deep into the country’s north and parts of Russia, allowing Washington and Seoul to monitor flights and missile launches. Asked about the protests, Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said Friday: “There are absolutely no anti-THAAD campaigns in China, still less violent campaigns.” He added that Beijing hoped Seoul “can heed the voice of the people and take effective measures to avoid further damage to the China-South Korea relationship.”

Headline:  Insurgents continue attacks in southern Thailand

Two paramilitary volunteers were wounded Friday by gunmen in southern Thailand, as continuing violence in the region threatens to undermine what the Thai government says is the possibility of a small breakthrough in efforts to bring peace to the region. The two volunteers in Narathiwat province were shot as they parked their motorcycles by the roadside, said police Capt. Wongduen Kamsri. The shooting came a day came after attacks elsewhere in the province killed three soldiers and five civilians, including an 8-year-old boy. The soldiers were shot in the evening at a busy market, while the boy, his parents and an aunt were killed as they were driving to school. About 7,000 people have been killed since a Muslim separatist insurgency flared in 2004 in Buddhist-dominated Thailand’s three Muslim-majority provinces in its far south.

Headline:       Military Draft Enacted Amid Russian Aggression, Security Fears

Sweden’s defense minister announced Thursday the country would reintroduce mandatory military service next year as regional security fears were compounded by a shortage of soldiers. The northern European nation has remained largely neutral throughout the last two centuries of international affairs, but Russia’s 2014 annexation of the former Ukrainian territory of Crimea and substantial, parallel military escalations between Moscow and NATO have sparked serious concerns over Sweden’s defense capabilities should conflict break out. The country’s Defense Minister Peter Hultqvist told local media that recent developments in Europe’s geopolitical climate meant Stockholm could no longer rely on volunteers to man its armed forces. Sweden, which had male-only conscription until 2010, was set to begin recruiting 4,000 men and women out of about 13,000 candidates born in 1999 and 2000 as of the beginning of next year. The goal was to develop “full and practiced war units” capable of bolstering the existing volunteer system via the program that would cost an estimated $66 million. The number of compulsory troops would increase should the security situation continue to deteriorate in the region, according to Swedish broadcaster STV News. “The government wants a more stable staff supply system and to boost its military capability because the security situation has changed,” Hultqvist told Sweden’s TT news agency Thursday. A defense ministry spokesperson added that “Russian military activity is one of the reasons,” according to BBC News.

Headline:  The “Sinister” Side Of Central Bank-Issued Digital Currency

Some things are moving faster than others. Representatives of more than 90 central banks met in June 2016 at an event organized by the Federal Reserve Bank of the United States, the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. The three-day Conference on ‘Policy Challenges for the Financial Sector’ included discussion on distributed ledger technologies in banking. This month the Bank of International Settlements observed that distributed ledger technology in banking has a long way to go. Others believe that they shouldn’t bother.  Meanwhile, there is rapid movement taking place on another front. It’s coming and it’s coming fast. Central banks around the world are either exploring or taking the first steps towards establishing digital versions of national (or “fiat”) currencies. Central bank-issued digital currency is under consideration in Canada, China, Sweden and the United Kindgom. India withdrew 86 per cent of all cash as legal tender in November 2016. 1.27 billion people were given four hours notice. Last month, we saw early signs from the European Central Bank that it is considering the feasibility of “digital-based money.” Commercial banks are taking the first steps to issue their own crypto-currencies, such as Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ Ltd. International organisations lead the chorus of support for related initiatives toward the digitization of cash. Alongside the International Monetary Fund and World Bank is the Alliance for Financial Inclusion, while the United Nations Capital Development Fund hosts the Better Than Cash Alliance. Organizations dedicated to advancing the technology and its adoption are emerging. They include E-Currency, the sole purpose of which is to promote “central bank-governed digital fiat currency.”

Headline:      These Economies Are Getting More Miserable This Year

If 2016 was the year of political shocks, this year could be when we find how they’ll impact the global economy. Bloomberg’s Misery Index, which combines countries’ 2017 inflation and unemployment outlooks, aims to show us just that. For the third year in a row, Venezuela’s economic and political problems make it the most miserable in the ranking. The least miserable country is once again Thailand — in large part due to its unique way of calculating employment — and the rest of the ladder features noteworthy moves by the U.K., Poland and Mexico, to name a few.

Headline:       Surge in human cases of deadly bird flu is prompting alarm

A surge in human infections of a deadly bird flu in China is prompting increasing concern among health officials around the world. While the human risk of these outbreaks is low at the moment, experts are calling for constant monitoring because of the large increase in cases this season, and because there are worrisome changes in the virus. U.S. officials say of all emerging influenza viruses, this particular virus poses the greatest risk of a pandemic threat if it evolves to spread readily from human to human, according to a report released Friday. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials are developing a vaccine that would target a newly evolving version of the virus. China is experiencing its largest outbreak of the H7N9 bird flu strain, with at least 460 infections reported since October. About a third of people diagnosed with H7N9 have died of their infections, according to the World Health Organization. Human infections with this type of bird flu were first reported in China in March 2013, and since then, there have been yearly epidemics of human infections. But this winter, the number of cases is greater than any of the previous four seasons. This year’s infections account for more than a third of the 1,258 H7N9 cases that have been reported since 2013. Most human infections involve exposure to live poultry or contaminated environments, especially markets where live birds have been sold. During the previous four waves of H7N9, 88 percent of patients developed pneumonia, 68 percent were admitted to an intensive care unit and 41 percent died, according to a report from the CDC.

Headline:      Jiminy Cricket! Disney Goes Gay

The folks who gave us Mickey Mouse and Goofy have decided it’s time for your children to enjoy same-sex romance while they slurp down their Fruit Loops. Disney just broadcast their very first gay cartoon kiss. The smooch happened during the second season of “Star vs The Forces of Evil,” a cartoon broadcast on Disney XD. An audience scene shows two guys kissing and a later scene show two ladies sharing an intimate moment. Disney is earning accolades for diversity and inclusivity among the LGBTQIA crowd. There’s also word the upcoming live-action version of Beauty and the Beast will include a gay storyline – between LeFou and Gaston. And what better place to discuss human sexuality with your four-year-old than a wholesome Disney movie? It’s unfortunate – that we live in a society where kids can no longer be kids – but that’s the world in which we live. But these days everything is about the LGBTQIA agenda. And when it comes to the entertainment industry, nothing is sacred in its quest to indoctrinate American children. Not even Disney. So, don’t be too surprised if the next Disney animated classic documents Tinker Bell’s torrid lesbian affair with Snow White while a gender questioning Peter Pan crushes on Pinocchio who just got out of a long-term relationship with one of the seven gender-fluid dwarfs. Headline:   27 days after Amona, police evacuate 9 Ofra homes

Headline: Amona HQ announces hunger strike

Hundreds of activists from Ofra, the broader Judea and Samaria region and from around Israel confronted police personnel and in some cases actively fought with them in protest at the evacuation and pending destruction of nine houses in the settlement. Emotions among the home owners and protesters were high especially coming so swiftly on the heels of the evacuation and destruction of the Amona outpost earlier this month. Some of the former residents of Amona went to Ofra to protest the destruction of the houses there. At least eight policemen were injured, two of whom were taken to hospital for treatment, while at least two protesters were arrested for attacking police personnel. After eight of the homes were evacuated by the early afternoon, several hundred protesters, some who had been extracted by police from other houses, packed themselves into every room of the final house, filling up the staircase, the balconies and taking up position on the roof as well. During the evacuation of this house, 18 protesters were injured, most of whom were minors, a spokesperson for the Binyamin municipal region said, and were treated at a medical site in Ofra. Two others were sent to hospital for treatment, one, a 14-year old, with injuries to his hand. Although the evacuation was mostly non-violent, large numbers of the protesters refused to leave of their own volition and had to be forcibly removed, in many cases requiring four policemen or women to take out each activist.

Headline:   Hezbollah Threatens Israel With Sign on Lebanese Border

A large sign was recently placed on the Israel-Lebanon border that threatened retaliation against Israel for killing Hezbollah terrorists, the Israeli news website NRG reported Monday. The sign featured the words “the account is not settled” alongside three images of Hezbollah commanders, including Imad Mughniyeh, who was killed in 2008 by a bomb believed to have been planted by Israel. The sign also displayed a map of routes that the Iran-backed terror group could take to infiltrate villages in northern Israel. Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah vowed two years ago that the next time Hezbollah attacked Israel, it would “enter into Galilee and…go even beyond the Galilee.” Lebanese media reported earlier this month that Hezbollah had dug tunnels and acquired “game-changing” weapons on Israel’s northern border. The Israel Defense Forces has adapted its strategy to counter Hezbollah efforts to infiltrate Israel by land or by sea, and has built physical obstacles to make it harder for Hezbollah to enter the country. Israeli security forces broke up a terror plot in the Golan Heights in October after a farmer stumbled over a cache of explosives.

Headline:   Russia, China veto UN resolution on Syria sanctions

Headline: US to persuade EU partners to sanction Syria over alleged chemical attacks

Russia and China on Tuesday vetoed a UN resolution backed by Western powers that would have imposed sanctions on Syria over chemical weapons use. The measure drafted by Britain, France and the United States won nine votes in favour at the Security Council while three countries opposed it — China, Russia and Bolivia. Kazakhstan, Ethiopia and Egypt abstained. UN resolutions require nine positive votes and no veto to be adopted. It was the seventh time that Russia, Syria’s top military ally, has used its veto power to shield the Damascus regime. China, also one of the five veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council, has joined Russia in vetoing six resolutions on Syria. Russian President Vladimir Putin had warned that imposing sanctions on Syria during ongoing peace talks in Geneva was “completely inappropriate” and would undermine the effort to end Syria’s nearly six-year war. “This resolution is very appropriate,” US Ambassador Nikki Haley told the council after the measure was defeated in the vote. “It is a sad day on the Security Council when members start making excuses for other member states killing their own people.” “The world is definitely a more dangerous place,” she said. The resolution would have put 11 Syrians, mainly military commanders, and 10 entities linked to chemical attacks in 2014 and 2015 on a UN sanctions blacklist.

Headline: The Arab Summit may bury hatchet with Assad

Secret contacts currently underway ahead of the Arab League summit later this month may bring about a sea change in the Arab world’s relationship with Syrian President Bashar Assad, debkafile’s sources report. On Saturday, Feb. 25, Egypt’s parliamentary committee for Arab affairs called for the return of Syria to the Arab League. This step symbolized an initiative launched by a number of leaders to invite Syrian President Bashar Assad to the March 29 Arab Summit in Amman – five years after Syria was expelled from the 22-member Arab League over the savage civil war then at its height. Three leaders are spearheading the moves for Assad’s reacceptance by the Arab community, whether together or separately: Russian President Vladimir Putin, Egyptian President Abdel-Fatteh El-Sissi and Jordanian King Abdullah. All three hope to see a historic handshake and greetings between Assad and Saudi King Salman. This would signify the reconciliation between Saudi Arabia which backed the Syrian rebels, and the Assad regime. But for Assad, it would mark collective Arab recognition of his personal victory, when few expected him to come out alive from the nearly seven sevens of cruel warfare, first sparked by the Arab Spring of December 2010. Putin’s interest in this epic event is self-evident. When he launched a major Russian intervention in the Syrian war in September 2015, President Barack Obama predicted that the Russian army would sink in the Syrian quagmire. The Russian leader proved him wrong, and his reputation in the Arab world would soar if he coujld persuade King Salman to accept Assad’s return to the Arab summit.

Headline:       Damascus opens up trade route with Kurds in northern Syria

Following a huge advance in eastern Aleppo, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) has officially linked up with the ‘Syrian Democratic Forces’ (SDF) and a region dubbed Rojava by Kurdish politicians vying for an independent Kurdistan in northern Syria. Effectively, Kurdish residents are able to reach the isolated Sheikh Maqsoud district in Aleppo city while family members of SAA troops stationed around Hasakah and Qamishli can visit their relatives for the first time since 2012. With trade flowing between Kurdish-held and Syrian-held areas of the country for the first time ever, the SAA and SDF are also supporting each other militarily on the battlefield in eastern Aleppo due to the aforementioned parties sharing common foes; namely, the Turkish Armed Forces and ISIS. Next up, the SDF and SAA will try to expand their narrow trade route to secure safe passage of goods and supply trucks. Should government forces expel Turkish troops from Al-Bab, this would secure the M4-Highway between Manbij and Aleppo for future trade. Nevertheless, the Syrian Government remains opposed to the concept of Rojava and an independent Kurdish state in northern Syria.

Headline: Turkish Army seizes two villages from Kurdish forces amid push towards Manbij

Headline: US State Senator: Turkey wants to annex northern Syria

The Turkish army and allied Syrian rebels attacked villages held by U.S.-allied militias near the city of Manbij in northern Syria on Wednesday, a spokesman for the militias said, an escalation of Turkey’s military campaign in the border area. There was no immediate comment from Turkey, which is waging its “Euphrates Shield” campaign with Syrian rebels to drive both Islamic State and Kurdish militias away from the frontier. Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said this week Manbij was the next target of the campaign following the capture of al-Bab from Islamic State last week. The new attack focused on a string of villages controlled by the Manbij Military Council, part of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) alliance, the spokesman for the Manbij Military Council told Reuters. “There is a very big attack by the Euphrates Shield and Turkish army on the villages and areas of the Manbij Military Council,” Sharfan Darwish said. He named eight villages some 27 km (17 miles) west of Manbij. “There are fierce clashes … and heavy artillery bombardment.” The fighting was the fiercest between the two sides since August last year, when Turkey and the rebels fought SDF-allied groups in an advance towards Manbij from the Turkish border. The area has been mostly calm since a ceasefire that month which the United States helped to broker. An upsurge in fighting between sides supported by two powerful NATO members will pose even more of a challenge for U.S. strategy in the battle against Islamic State, and further complicate northern Syria’s already crowded battlefield.

Headline:   Syrian Army retakes Palmyra citadel from ISIS – sources to RT (Homs Province)

Syrian government forces and their allies have liberated the Palmyra citadel located on a hill overlooking the town from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants, sources tell RT. “Pro-government forces are now in control of several strategic mountains that are overlooking the ancient city of Palmyra. They also have under their control the famous citadel,” RT’s Lizzie Phelan reports, citing sources that are in direct contact with the army command center on the Palmyra front. The Syrian Army does not have any forces stationed in the citadel, as it is filled with improvised explosive devices, but it is under their control, she added. The Syrian Army took control over “the heights surrounding the historic citadel of Palmyra and as well as the SyriaTel hill after Islamic State militants abruptly left the area,” a field commander told RIA Novosti. As a result, Palmyra is now “at a stone throw” from the Syrian Army, which is rapidly advancing towards the city, the commander added. The army is now storming a hotel district in the southwestern part of Palmyra, RIA Novosti reports, citing a source.

Turkey

Headline:       Iran, Turkey presidents meet to defuse tensions

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani and Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan agreed on Wednesday to improve ties, including in the fight against terrorism, Iran’s state news agency IRNA said, following some angry exchanges between the regional rivals. Tehran and Ankara support opposite sides in the conflict in Syria. Largely Shi’ite Muslim Iran backs the government of President Bashar al-Assad, while Turkey, which is majority Sunni, has backed elements of the Syrian opposition. Last month Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu both accused Iran of trying to destabilize Syria and Iraq and of sectarianism, prompting Tehran to summon Ankara’s ambassador. In an apparent response to Ankara’s accusations, Rouhani was quoted by IRNA as saying on Wednesday: “Iran supports the territorial integrity of regional countries … especially Iraq and Syria.” “Resolving political differences (between Iran and Turkey) can lead to regional stability,” Rouhani was quoted as saying at his meeting with Erdogan, on the sidelines of an economic cooperation summit in the Pakistani capital Islamabad. Regional rivalry between Iran and Turkey is nothing new, but political analysts have linked Ankara’s tougher rhetoric to U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to the Middle East.

Twelve policemen have been killed in an “insider attack” in the southern Afghan province of Helmand, officials say. A police source told the BBC that an infiltrator from the Taliban had allowed militants into the outpost in the regional capital, Lashkar Gah. The infiltrator fled with the Taliban. Other reports said the infiltrator killed the policemen himself. A spokesperson for the provincial governor confirmed the attack, but did not provide details. Local television news reported that the Taliban seized weapons and ammunition from the scene, and that a local hospital had confirmed receipt of at least 11 bodies. But a Helmand police official made no mention of a Taliban infiltrator in his comments on the attack. “The Taliban attacked a guard with silenced guns and then entered the check post,” Helmand deputy police chief Haji Gulai told Reuters news agency. “They attacked other policemen with hand grenades and killed all of them. They later took their weapons and ammunition and escaped.”

Headline:     Kremlin Condemns NATO’s ‘Barbaric’ Libya Intervention Ahead of PM Visit

The Kremlin has revived its criticism of the U.S.-led intervention in Libya, days ahead of a possible visit by the war-torn north African country’s prime minister, state news agency Itar-Tass reports. The NATO operation in 2011 toppled Libyan authoritarian leader Muammar al-Qaddafi quickly but the limited planning for rebuilding the country politically resulted in a collapse into civil war. Islamist extremist groups have risen to prominence in the country and ex-U.S. President Barack Obama pointed to the lack of planning as his worst mistake in his last year in office. Russia was opposed to the move though did not block the resolution for an intervention in the United Nations Security Council. Regardless, Libya has become the Kremlin’s standard example of Western inadequacy in the Middle East. Monday Russian President Vladimir Putin’s spokesman gave yet another clue that Moscow intends to play a role in restoring a strong regime in the country.

Soldiers shot dead two suspected jihadists in the mountainous Kasserine region of central Tunisia, the defence ministry said on Wednesday. It said more might have been killed on Tuesday evening but the operation on Mount Sammama was still continuing so it was a preliminary toll. Tunisian media cited military sources as saying that as many as seven suspected jihadists might have been killed. A hospital source in Kasserine said one soldier had suffered a bullet wound. Mount Sammama is adjacent to Mount Chaambi, considered to be the main rear base of the jihadists near the border with Algeria. Soldiers shot dead two suspected jihadists in the same area on February 17. Since its 2011 revolution, Tunisia has experienced an increase in jihadist attacks that have cost the lives of dozens of members of the security forces and also 59 foreign tourists.

Headline:      Armenia-backed separatists say one soldier killed in clashes with Azeri forces

Armenian-backed separatists said on Wednesday one of their soldiers was killed in clashes with Azeri forces along the boundary with the breakaway Nagorno-Karabakh region. Clashes over control of the region, which lies inside Azerbaijan but is controlled by ethnic Armenians, have stoked fears of a wider conflict breaking out in the South Caucasus, which is crisscrossed by oil and gas pipelines. The Azeri defence ministry said that their forces detected and destroyed some Armenian combat vehicles during a manoeuvre. “The Armenian armed forces have been suffering losses, mainly mercenaries of Armenian origin,” the Azeri defence ministry said in a statement. Headline:    Islam Set To Overtake Christianity As Most Popular Religion

Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and will overtake Christianity as the most popular before the end of this century, according to an analysis of religious surveys published Tuesday by the Pew Research Center. With 1.6 billion, Muslims made up 23 percent of the world’s population, according to a 2010 Pew estimate. That figure was still some way short of the 2.2 billion Christians which comprised 31 percent of the population. However, by 2050 there could be near parity between the numbers of adherents of the two religions for the first time in history. The reasons for this rapid growth are thought to be the greater number of children Muslims have compared to other religious groups and the comparatively young age of Muslims. The largest percentage of Muslims are currently in the Asia-Pacific region, rather than the Middle East and North Africa. Indonesia currently has the largest number of Muslims of any country, but that title could be taken by India by 2050. By that point, it is also projected that Muslims will also make up 10 percent of Europe’s population.

Headline: Bloody Islamic State video puts China in cross-hairs

Islamic State militants from China’s Uighur ethnic minority have vowed to return home and “shed blood like rivers”, according to a jihadist-tracking firm, in what experts said marked the first IS threat against Chinese targets. The threat came in a half-hour video released Monday by a division of the Islamic State in western Iraq and featuring militants from China’s Uighur ethnic group, said the US-based SITE Intelligence Group, which analysed the footage. China has for years blamed exiled Uighur “separatists” for a series of violent attacks in its western Xinjiang region — the Uighur homeland — and warned of the potential for militants to link up with global jihadist groups. In the video, a Uighur fighter issued the threat against China just before executing an alleged informant. “Oh, you Chinese who do not understand what people say! We are the soldiers of the Caliphate, and we will come to you to clarify to you with the tongues of our weapons, to shed blood like rivers and avenging the oppressed,” according to SITE’s translation. A traditionally Muslim group, many Uighurs complain of cultural and religious repression and discrimination by China. It appears to be the Islamic State’s “first direct threat” against China, Dr. Michael Clarke, an expert on Xinjiang at the National Security College of Australian National University, told AFP.

Headline:           PAC-3 missiles deployed on Taiwan’s east coast ‘in response to Chinese military strategy’

One of the world’s most powerful air defense missile systems, the Patriot Advanced Capability-3 (PAC-3), has been stationed on Taiwan’s east coast, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said in a report, citing China’s “changing military strategy.” The ministry confirmed that (PAC-3) missile systems were moved to the area of Hualien and Taitung to ensure that Taiwan can defend itself in the event of an attack, Taiwan’s national news agency, CNA, reported. It is the first time Taiwan’s military has acknowledged stationing the missiles in the scantly populated Hualien and Taitung areas, according to Taiwan News. Until now, Patriot PAC-3 missile defense systems were believed to have been located close to the populous cities of Taipei, Taichung, and Kaohsiung, the newspaper said. The MND said in a report that Taiwan’s military is determined to boost its combat readiness through innovations in military drills and training, deployment of military forces, and enhanced exchanges between various branches of the armed forces, in light of increased military spending by China, CNA reported. Taiwan’s armed forces will be conducting routine patrols, air force training sessions, and joint air-naval exercises to enhance their ability to protect the fishing rights and safety of Taiwanese fishermen in the South China Sea, Taiwan’s national news agency said, citing the ministry’s report.

Headline:  NY Teamsters Pension Becomes First To Run Out Of Money As Expert Warns “Pension Tsunami” Is Coming

The New York Teamsters Road Carriers Local 707 Pension Fund has won the unfortunate award for “First Pension to Officially Run Out of Money.”  According to the New York Daily News, and a host of angry former truck drivers who’ve had their pension benefits slashed, the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp. (PBGC) has officially been forced to step in and take over payments to retirees of the Local 707, albeit at a much lower rate. Teamsters Local 707’s pension fund is the first to officially bottom out financially — which happened this month. “I had a union job for 30 years,” Chmil said. “We had collectively bargained contracts that promised us a pension. I paid into it with every paycheck. Everyone told us, ‘Don’t worry, you have a union job, your pension is guaranteed.’ Well, so much for that.” “It’s a nightmare, it has just devastated all of our lives. I’ve gone from having $48,000 a year to less than half that,” said Chmil, one of five Local 707 retirees who agreed to share their stories with the Daily News last week. “I don’t want other people to have to go through this. We need everyone to wake up and do something; that’s why we’re talking,” said Ray Narvaez. Of course, the Teamsters 707 and other Teamster pension boards attempted to submit plans that would have cut benefits in order to prolong payments to retirees but those plans were universally rejected by the Obama administration…better that the pensions just run out of cash completely.  Per Pensions & Investments: The Obama administration is in denial about the necessity of cutting pension benefits under the Multiemployer Pension Reform Act of 2014 to try to put distressed multiemployer plans on sounder financial footings and make them more sustainable. It must face reality and order the Treasury Department to stop blocking action. So far the department, required under the act to approve proposed reductions, has rejected proposals by the Teamsters Central States, Southeast & Southwest Areas Pension Plan and the Road Carriers Local 707 Pension Fund. Ten plans total have applied for cuts, including the New York State Teamsters Conference Pension and Retirement Fund, Syracuse, whose Aug. 31 application is too new to be listed on the Treasury’s website. The Road Carriers 707 application stated that the plan projects it will become insolvent in February — only about five months away — absent suspension of benefits. As desperate as the plan’s financial situation appears to be, the Treasury denied the application.

Headline: More Austerity Looms as Greece, Lenders Resume Bailout Talks

Greece and its lenders resumed a long-stalled review of its bailout Tuesday, with the government in Athens braced to commit to yet more austerity in exchange for the funds the country needs to remain solvent. The review has dragged on for months, partly because of a rift between the European Union and the International Monetary Fund over Greece’s fiscal goals and prospects next year — when the current rescue program expires — and beyond. To help break the impasse, the leftist-led government last week agreed to pre-legislate economic reforms, including cuts in income tax breaks and pensions, to come into effect from the start of 2019, the year the next parliamentary elections are due. The IMF, still undecided on whether to participate in what is Greece’s third rescue package, says Athens cannot meet its targets unless it is granted further debt relief and adopts extra belt-tightening measures. Greece’s European lenders, notably Germany, oppose debt relief.

Headline: Venezuela is down to its last $10 billion

Venezuela only has $10.5 billion in foreign reserves left, according to its most recent central bank data. For rest of the year, Venezuela owes roughly $7.2 billion in outstanding debt payments. In 2011, Venezuela had roughly $30 billion in reserves. In 2015, it had $20 billion. The trend can’t persist much longer, but it’s hard to know exactly when Venezuela will run completely out of cash. “The question is: Where is the floor?” says Siobhan Morden, head of Latin America fixed income strategy at Nomura Holdings. “If oil prices stagnate and foreign reserves reach zero, then the clock is going to start on a default.” According to the country’s recently released 2016 financial report, about $7.7 billion of its remaining $10.5 billion of reserves is in gold. To make debt payments in the past year, Venezuela shipped gold to Switzerland. The thinning reserves paint a scary financial picture as the country faces a humanitarian crisis sparked by an economic meltdown. Venezuelans are suffering massive food and medical shortages, as well as skyrocketing grocery prices.

Headline:     Somalia President Declares Drought a National Disaster

Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has declared a state of disaster as the Horn of Africa nation struggles with a severe drought and food crisis. According to the United Nations, the crisis in Somalia threatens 6.2 million people, more than half the population. Conditions are driest in the north. Crop production and livestock numbers have fallen sharply after back-to-back poor rainy seasons last year. Last week, U.N. aid agencies warned there is only a two-month window to avert a catastrophe in Somalia. The World Health Organization says the current drought conditions are also causing the spread of disease. It says that since early January, more than 6,000 cases of cholera have been reported, as well as more than 2,500 cases of suspected measles. The United Nations has launched $825 million appeal for Somalia to cover the first half of 2017.

Headline:   Nicaragua woman burnt on a fire in exorcism ritual

Headline: Face-biter said he fled demon-like figure before killings

A young woman in an isolated part of Nicaragua has died a week after being tied up and allegedly thrown on a fire in an exorcism ritual. Family members told local media that Vilma Trujillo had been attacked by four people led by a man who said he was an evangelical pastor. Juan Rocha denied burning Mrs Trujillo, saying evil spirits had suspended her above the fire and then dropped her. Relatives found Mrs Trujillo, 25, hours later with severe burns. The police have arrested Mr Rocha and a number of other people allegedly involved in the attack. The victim’s husband, Reynaldo Peralta Rodriguez, said the mother-of-two was taken inside a church last week when members thought she was possessed after allegedly trying to attack people with a machete, the Associated Press reports. “It’s unforgiveable what they did to us,” he was quoted as saying. “They killed my wife, the mother of my two little ones. Now what am I going to tell them?” Pablo Cuevas, a spokesman for Nicaragua’s Human Rights Commission, called on the government for firmer control over religious sects in the country. “It is incredible that these things can happen today, there has to be a review by the authorities into all the different denominations and religions,” he said. “We can’t have things like this happening.”

Headline:     VOLCANO WARNING Panic in Sicily as Mount Etna BLOWS in huge eruption on Italy holiday isle

Italy’s Mount Etna has started spewing lava in what is its second eruption of the year. Giant fountains of lava could be seen sprouting from the volcano, located on the isle of Sicily, as far away as Catania, around 30 kilometres away, and the resort town of Taormina. The Meteorological Observatory in Nunziata said: “You can clearly see the lava fountains, although currently modest, as it escapes from the crater in the southeast.” An orange air alert has been issued, meaning that airspace will remain open but authorities will continue to monitor the situation. While civil protection authorities has declared a yellow alert level and, as prescribed by the municipal emergency plan, an ordinance was issued to restrict access to the summit of Etna. Authorities added that there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, and expect it to remain that way with the eruption posing little threat to nearby settlements. The large volcano began erupting on February 27, and the eruptions are expected to continue for several days.

Headline:     Storm that spawned 24 tornado reports barrels east; 3 dead

A powerful and wide-reaching line of severe storms barreled east on Wednesday threatening new damage, after spinning off as many as 24 tornadoes across the central U.S., killing at least three people. Tornado reports emerged up and down the state of Illinois on Tuesday. Compact but strong storms known as supercells triggered widespread damage from Arkansas to Ohio, as wind-whipped wildfires destroyed homes in Texas. Parts of the eastern and southeastern U.S. could be in the crosshairs next. Tornado watches were in effect for parts of Kentucky and Tennessee through Wednesday morning. In Ottawa, Illinois, state Emergency Management Agency spokeswoman Patti Thompson said a tornado victim was killed by an uprooted tree. In nearby Naplate, storms ripped homes into pieces.

Headline:      Trump May Break With UN Human Rights Council Over Anti-Israel Bias: Report

The Trump administration is considering pulling the US out of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in protest of its blatant and incessant anti-Israel bias, Politico reported on Saturday. Israeli politicians welcomed the report. The administration sees the Council as inherently anti-Israel, a common US criticism against an international body which, as of an April 2015 report, had condemned Israel more than every other country in the world combined. The Council consistently continues to abuse the Middle East’s lone democracy and to stay silent on the horrific human rights abuses of neighboring Arab states. While ongoing discussions will not affect the US’s participation in the Council’s upcoming session, which begins on Monday, the final decision would likely include consultations between President Donald Trump, Tillerson, and ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, who recently blasted the UN Security Council for focusing the lion’s share of its attentions on Israel while ignoring other Middle East crises. Michael Oren, former Israeli ambassador to the US and prominent politician, praised the report, tweeting that the decision to leave the “insanely anti-Israel” Council would “send a moral message to the world.”

Headline:  Jihadist: Hamas Confiscates Hundreds Of Rockets From Gaza Salafists

Headline:  Former senior PA official: ‘Hamas is willing to go back to ’67 borders’

Hamas has raided weapons caches of Islamic State-affiliated groups in the Gaza Strip in the wake of several rockets fired from Sinai into Israel, a top jihadi militant affiliated with IS ideology told Breitbart Jerusalem. Abu Bakr Almaqdesi said that about 250 rockets and dozens of rifles have been confiscated, in addition to the arrest of their supposed owners. The arsenal ranged between smaller rockets, with a range of 5-7 kilometers, to Grad rockets that are capable of reaching Tel Aviv, he claimed. In addition, more than 60 AK-47 rifles were confiscated, the jihadist said. “But the so-called Muslims didn’t make do with depriving the mujahedeen of their arms,” he said, referring to Hamas, “they confiscated their personal computers, mobile phones and motorcycles as well. They even took Islamic State flags.” “The rockets are intended to hit the Jews, who have become active players in the war waged against our brothers in Sinai by [Egyptian President Abdel Fatah] Sisi’s army of infidels,” he said. “The fact that Hamas takes the rockets away from the mujahedeen proves that they have nothing to do with Islam and jihad. Hamas has come out in defense of the Jews. They seek to become part of democracy and give precedence to man-made laws over divine law, and this is the result. But Hamas knows full well that its men, thank Allah, continue to cross the lines and join the mujahedeen and the Islamic State.”

Headline:  Report: Hamas currently has 15 border-crossing tunnels

IDF jets and tanks struck five Hamas terror targets in the Gaza Strip on Monday afternoon in retaliation for a rocket that landed in southern Israeli territory overnight, the army confirmed Monday afternoon. “The strikes occurred in response to high trajectory rocket attacks on the western Negev in the morning,” the statement said, adding that “the firing of rockets constitutes a threat to the security of Israeli citizens and harms the sovereignty of the State of Israel.” According to Palestinian reports, at least eight airstrikes are said to have hit Hamas positions in the Gaza Strip, including in Beit Lahiya and according to Ashraf al-Qidra, the spokesman for the Health Ministry in Gaza, four men were “moderately wounded east of Rafah during the Israeli bombardment.” According to Palestinian Maan News agency, two strikes targeted the Shuhada Hamas military site in the central Gaza Strip west of the Nuseirat refugee camp. Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman stated that while Israel has no intention of initiating any military action in Gaza, “we have no intention to continue to absorb drippings (of rockets out of the strip). Hamas must take responsibility and relax.” There have been several rockets launched at southern Israel in February, including two incidents in which the Islamic State group in the Sinai fired a barrage of rockets towards the southern city of Eilat, three of which were intercepted by the Iron Dome missile system while a fourth landed in open territory. Two weeks ago, following another rocket attack, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told reporters in London that his directives are to respond with force to every missile attack.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas called for an Israeli withdrawal to the pre-Six Day War boundaries during his address to the United Nations Human Rights Council on Monday. “Peace in the world can be secured by realization of the two-state solution, Palestine and Israel, living side by side on the pre-1967 borders in peace and security,” Abbas said, urging “concerned parties not to take steps that contribute to strengthening the Israeli occupation of the State of Palestine.” “This includes the support to the Israeli settlement enterprise, attacks against holy places or moving embassies to Jerusalem,” he added, implicitly referencing US President Donald Trump’s stated plan to move the US embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Headline:  Netanyahu: Still no agreement on settlements with Trump

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reportedly told MKs from his ruling Likud party on Monday that he still has not reached an agreement with US President Donald Trump regarding the construction of new homes in West Bank settlements. Netanyahu said that although he is working with the White House to establish a “mechanism” for coordinating settlement construction, “things are not as simple as you think they are,” unnamed participants in the Likud faction meeting told the Haaretz daily. Trump’s presidency “is a historic opportunity, but [we] need to know the limits of this opportunity,” Haaretz quoted Netanyahu as saying. Netanyahu’s comments were reportedly made during a heated argument between Likud lawmakers who support annexing large swaths of the West Bank and those in favor of separating from the Palestinians while still maintaining security control over the area.

Saudi Arabia

Headline:     Analysis: Is Israeli-Saudi peace a realistic proposition?

Like a puzzle composed of only two pieces, two cabinet ministers separately delivered remarks last week, granting the Israeli public an interesting glimpse into the current reality of the balance of power in the Middle East. First was Defense Minister Avigdor Liberman, who broadly described the main elements of Iran’s intelligence activities in the Middle East during his speech at the Munich Security Conference on Sunday. His remarks included an expression of concern for a third, far-off country, which does not have diplomatic relations with Israel. “They are trying to create chaos in every place,” Liberman said of the Iranians. “And there main target is Saudi Arabia.” Since when does the defense minister of Israel care about the hardships of Saudi Arabia? The answer was provided the next day by Liberman’s fellow cabinet member, Intelligence Minister Israel Katz. “Yes, there is cooperation between Israel and these countries, which cannot be discussed in detail,” Katz explained. “This cooperation is going to be significantly upgraded, because the US is going to lead it. The first goal is to block Iran and push it out of the area.” The two ministers are correct: Iran’s efforts to act against Israel are currently reaching record heights. The Iranians, encouraged by their success in saving the Assad regime in Syria, have declared a quiet war on Israel. Their approach is two-pronged. In Gaza, they are providing Hamas’s military wing with weapons and money. On the northern border, they are working tirelessly to fill Hezbollah’s weapons warehouses with precision missiles, which are liable to cause battlefield losses for the IDF and the Air Force. More than a decade after the Second Lebanon War, Hezbollah is being built into a force that rivals that of a national army.

Headline:        War-torn Yemen may attract jihadi fighters from Syria and Iraq

Yemen, ravaged by civil war and with a devastating famine looming, is an ideal refuge for Isis militants fleeing Iraq and Syria. The war between Houthi rebels from Yemen’s north, who seized power in early 2015, and the government of President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi is increasingly taking on a sectarian dimension. The conflict began as a domestic battle for territory, power and resources. But the involvement of Saudi Arabia on the side of President Hadi, and of Iran providing limited support to the Houthi rebels (most of whom adhere to the Zaydi offshoot of Shiism) is fuelling the hate-filled narratives favoured by militant jihad. Add to this poisonous climate the rugged topography of Yemen, the security vacuum left by an absentee government residing in Riyadh, the weakening of tribal social glue as internally displaced people move east, rampant smuggling networks and a vast and porous coastline. The result is a pocket of instability to which Isis fighters can flee. Although some Isis forces already operate within Yemen, it is not the dominant jihadi group in the country. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has the upper hand in terms of numbers, influence and appeal.

Headline:     IS militants in north Sinai showing their strength

In the past three days, Islamic State militants in Egypt’s volatile northern Sinai region abducted four men accused of collaborating with the government, three of them during a brazen raid in the middle of a public market. Two of the men have been found slain while the others remain missing; Egyptian officials say that one of the slain men had his eyes plucked out and was set on fire before being shot to death. Women are being threatened with punishment if they don’t wear the niqab and farmers are being forced to pay financial tribute to IS under the guise of the “zakat” mandatory Islamic donation to charity. The militants have set up their own checkpoints especially on the roads around the city of Rafah, which borders the Gaza Strip. Passengers are forced to recite from the Quran before being allowed to pass, according to area residents and tribal leaders. This recent show-of-strength campaign by IS loyalists in northern Sinai comes on the heels of a recent easing of the military campaign against them and represents a move to reassert their control over the local civilian population, according to residents, tribal leaders and officials. “The messages the militants are sending are terrifying,” said a prominent tribal leader. “The numbers of militants is not that big … But the army campaign stopped and the militants returned.” The violence poses a fresh challenge to President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi’s government to put down an IS-led insurgency in northern Sinai and prevent spillover that at times has reached the Egyptian mainland. The extremists have repeatedly targeted Christian residents, causing more than 100 Christian families to flee from the city of el-Arish. IS militants in northern Sinai recently vowed in a video message to step up a wave of attacks on the embattled Christian minority, a threat that highlights a possible shift in tactics — targeting vulnerable and less-defended civilians instead of the usual police and military targets. A devastating IS-claimed suicide bombing at a Cairo church in December killed nearly 30 people.

Gunmen and suicide bombers have attacked security bases in Homs, western Syria, killing at least 32. State TV said the local head of military intelligence was among the dead and some reports say more than 40 died. Jihadist group Tahrir al-Sham said it carried out the attacks. Homs has been under government control since December 2015 when rebels left under a ceasefire deal. Syria’s government said the attacks would not go unanswered. Its UN Ambassador Bashar al-Jaafari, who leads the government delegation at peace talks in Geneva, said they were a message to the talks from “the sponsors of terrorism”. He demanded that all opposition groups present denounce the violence, saying direct talks could only be held with a unified opposition. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group, said attackers targeted the headquarters of military security in the city and also a branch of state security. The attacks took place in the heavily guarded Ghouta and Mahatta districts. State TV said provincial army intelligence chief General Hassan Daabul, a close associate of President Bashar al-Assad, was among the dead. After the attacks, government planes carried out air strikes on the last opposition enclave in Homs, though rebels there are not connected to Tahrir al-Sham.

Headline:  Turkey-backed Syrian Rebels Clash With Army in al-Bab (Aleppo province)

Headline:  Syrian MP: We will back Iran in any war with Turkey

Turkey-backed Syrian rebel groups clashed with government forces near a city in northern Syria they captured from Islamic State, the second such confrontation in that region this month. The clash late on Sunday took place in an area where the sides are waging separate campaigns against Islamic State. Russia, which backs the Syrian government, intervened to halt the previous clash. The latest incident occurred near the city of al-Bab, which the Free Syrian Army (FSA) rebels captured last week from Islamic State. Syrian government forces on Sunday announced the capture of the town of Tadef, 4 km (2.5 miles) to the south. A rebel official in touch with one of the FSA groups taking part in the Turkey-backed campaign in northern Syria said rebels had opened fire on Sunday in response to an attempt by government forces to advance towards an area near al-Bab. An FSA statement said “22 regime members” were killed. A Syrian military source said the rebels had “targeted our forces in Tadef with artillery and machine guns”. The source, who described the FSA factions as “terrorist groups that belong to Turkey”, gave no casualty toll.

Headline:      Iraqi Forces Reach Key Mosul Bridge

Iraqi forces battling Islamic State militants reached a key bridge in the city of Mosul, as they pushed forward with their week-old offensive to clear IS from the western side of the city. Officials said pro-government forces were in control of a section of what is known as the fourth bridge, or the southernmost bridge across the Tigris River. Fighting in Mosul has badly damaged or destroyed all of the bridges, and restoring access across the river will allow the army to move troops and supplies. As the fighting in western Mosul intensifies, there is concern about civilians living there. The United Nations has described a humanitarian crisis in the area with people facing severe shortages of food, fuel and medical supplies. U.S.-led coalition troops, officially deployed as trainers and advisers, have assisted the Iraqi force in the Mosul offensive. Under a current bilateral agreement, U.S. forces are not authorized to engage in combat. But, as the Mosul offensive gained strength last week, U.S. Air Force Colonel John Dorrian said advisers were positioned so close to the frontlines that they had come under attack and returned fire.

Headline:    Turkey will end operation in Syria after Manbij captured: Erdogan’s adviser

Headline:  Turkey strikes PKK targets in northern Iraq

Turkey plans to end its military operation in Syria after the city of Manbij is captured, an adviser to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Monday at a conference in Moscow. Ilnur Cevik said Turkey is setting up a 56-mile “buffer zone” into Manbij after capturing al-Bab. Cevik appeared at a conference called “Relations between Turkey and Russia: From the Period of Tension to Strengthening Cooperation.” It was organized by Sabah newspaper and the Press and Information Office of the Turkish government. Last week, Turkey’s armed forces and Syrian rebels gained near full control of al-Bab in northern Syrian from the Islamic State. Al-Bab is 30 miles west of Manbij. Cevik said he is “grateful” for Russia’s efforts.

Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wrote a 3,500 word letter to President Donald Trump in which he slams the new administration’s restrictions on immigration and US “dominance” of the United Nations. The letter was transferred to the US via the Swiss Embassy in Tehran, which serves as the point of contact between the United States and Iran. In the document, Ahmadinejad congratulated President Trump’s November win and praised his 2016 campaign, which the former Iranian leader said “truthfully described the US political system and electoral structure as corrupt.” But Ahmadinejad, who during his tenure as president threatened to “wipe Israel off the map” and publicly suggested the Holocaust was a hoax, chided Trump over his recent executive order temporarily restricting immigration from seven high-risk countries, saying the US must “value respect toward the diversity of nations and races.” Ahmadinejad went on to argue that the United States “belongs to all nations”, suggesting the US has no right to regulate immigration into the country.

Headline:       Mystery deepens over Chinese forces in Afghanistan

Headline:  US Drone Strike Kills Senior Taliban Leader in Afghanistan

A mystery over recent sightings of Chinese military vehicles patrolling inside Afghanistan deepened last week as Beijing denied its troops were in Afghanistan but confirmed it was undertaking “joint counter-terrorism operations” with Kabul. The disclosure comes as China steps up its involvement with its western neighbour amid a gradual withdrawal by US forces from the war-ravaged country. Ren Guoqiang, a spokesman for the People’s Liberation Army, was asked about reports of Chinese troops inside Afghanistan at a defence ministry press conference on Thursday. He flatly denied any military involvement but said that “the law enforcement authorities of the two sides have conducted joint law enforcement operations in border areas to fight against terrorism”, according to an official transcript of the remarks made available Friday. “The report that the Chinese military patrolled in Afghanistan is false,” he said. An effort Friday to clarify whether there were any Chinese non-military patrols on the Afghan side of the border was met with the same response.

Sudan

Headline:    EU urged to end cooperation with Sudan after refugees whipped and deported

The EU is facing calls to rethink its cooperation with Sudan on migration flows after scores of refugees were whipped, fined, jailed and deported from Khartoum last weekend following a peaceful protest over a huge rise in visa processing fees. About 65 asylum seekers – the majority from Ethiopia and some from Eritrea – were lashed 40 times on their backs and the back of their legs with leather whips, lawyers told the Guardian. The detainees were also handed fines of more than $800 (£645), and 40 were deported immediately, after being arrested in what witnesses say was a violent police attack on a peaceful protest. The incident raises concerns about the strength of human rights conditions attached to more than $100m of migration-related aid earmarked for Sudan by the European commission. EU officials deny that any revenues will go to government forces such as the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), border guards on Sudan’s Libyan frontier linked to the notorious Janjaweed militia. The EU says it has not yet given any funds to the Sudanese government and that monies have been directed through international agencies. However, a parliamentary delegation to Sudan in December said while EU stocks might not yet have arrived, it was clear that its funding projects “will be providing equipment to national police across the region for border control”.

Libya

Headline:      Libya PM heading to Moscow to seek better ties

The head of Libya’s embattled unity government Fayez al-Sarraj will visit Moscow this week, a government source said on Monday, after a key rival sought to build ties with Russia. A source from the UN-backed Government of National Accord (GNA) said Sarraj would begin a visit to Moscow on Thursday, without providing further details. The visit comes as Libya continues to be submerged in chaos, six years after the ouster and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gaddafi in a NATO-backed armed uprising. Sarraj’s fragile GNA, formed under a UN-backed deal signed in late 2015, has struggled to impose its authority, particularly in eastern Libya where a rival administration holds sway.  Military strongman Khalifa Haftar is aligned with the rival administration and commands the self-proclaimed Libyan National Army which is battling jihadists and controls key oil export terminals. Analysts believe that Russia, emboldened by its military success in Syria, is seeking a foothold in oil-rich Libya with support for Haftar. On February 14 Russia tried to mediate a meeting between Sarraj and Haftar in Cairo, but the bid fell through. Sarraj’s visit also comes after Russian oil giant Rosneft and Libya’s National Oil Corporation last week signed a deal to explore possible cooperation in various fields, including exploration and production.

Headline:    IS group claims foiled suicide attack in Algeria

A policeman managed to foil an attempted suicide attack in eastern Algeria on Sunday, opening fire on the bomber and triggering the explosives belt he was wearing, officials said. The botched attack was later claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group. The Algerian national police force said the attacker had been approaching a police station in the city of Constantine when he was shot by the officer. “An officer who was in front of the police headquarters, underneath a building that is home to a dozen families, responded energetically and heroically after several warnings, targeting with precision the explosive belt worn by a terrorist,” police said in a statement cited by APS news agency. At the time of the attack, around 9pm local time (8pm GMT), a strong explosion was heard near the police station in central Constantine, eastern Algeria’s main hub, APS reported. Two officers were injured in the explosion, according to local reports. The IS group claimed responsibility for the attempted bombing via its AMAQ news agency on Monday. “An operation of martyrdom using an explosive in a bag by an Islamic State fighter yesterday targeted an Algerian police station in the Constantine city centre,” AMAQ said. The botched attack comes four months after gunmen shot dead a policeman in a restaurant in northern Constantine, in a rare urban attack believed to have been carried out by a local IS group affiliate.

Morocco

Headline:      Western Sahara: Morocco to pull out of UN buffer zone

Morocco is to pull out of a UN buffer zone in the disputed Western Sahara territory, an official statement says.  Tension in the area flared up a year ago when Morocco moved into the buffer zone, breaching a UN-backed ceasefire. The Polisario Front, which wants independence for Western Sahara, dismissed Morocco’s move as a gimmick. Morocco recently rejoined the African Union, which it had left in 1984 after the body’s recognition of Polisario as the territory’s government. The decision to withdraw from the Guerguerat zone is said to have been taken in person by the Moroccan King Mohammed VI. The move came after the sovereign spoke on the phone with the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres who asked him to pull out his troops. “The Kingdom of Morocco will proceed from today with a unilateral withdrawal from the (Guerguerat) zone,” the Moroccan foreign ministry said in a statement. Polisario said the move would hardly make any difference. “The Moroccan decision to withdraw its troops near Guerguerat by a few hundred metres is window dressing,” it said in a statement.

The statement continued by claiming that several bodies of Azerbaijani soldiers are left in the neutral zone after their offensive failed. The casualties of the Azerbaijani side include the head of the 181st intelligence brigade of the Azerbaijani Armed Forces, Major Abdulayev, commander of the brigade’s intelligence company, Senior Lieutenant Ashimli Shakhlar, intelligence officer Adihusseinov, and two other servicemen, according to the Army statement. “Several [Azerbaijani] corpses are lying in the neutral zone,” said the statement. “No [servicemen] were killed or wounded on the Armenian side… How can the defending side leave casualties in the neutral zone?” asked a part of the statement.

Headline:    Philippines confirms beheading of German hostage by Abu Sayyaf militants

Daesh-linked militants in the Philippines have beheaded the German hostage they were holding for ransom, the government in Manila said Monday. A video posted by the Abu Sayyaf group, which was monitored by intelligence group SITE, showed Jurgen Kantner being killed by a knife-wielding man. Shortly after the video appeared, government envoy Jesus Dureza confirmed the German’s death. “We grieve as we strongly condemn the barbaric beheading of yet another kidnap victim,” Dureza said in a statement. “Up to the last moment, many sectors including the Armed Forces of the Philippines exhausted all efforts to save his life. We all tried our best. But to no avail,” said Dureza. Military officials in the south said they had not yet found the German’s body. In Geneva, Philippines Foreign Secretary Perfecto Yasay said the German hostage may have been killed because he was sick. Speaking on the sidelines of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Yasay said the Philippines was seeking technological help from its allies to pinpoint the locations of remaining hostages and would stick to its tough “no ransom” policy.

It was one of the most heinous acts of un-American, anti-Christian behavior I’ve ever seen, folks. Louisiana State chaplain Michael Sprague and the unidentified Vietnam War veteran should be commended for maintaining their composure in the face of such verbal barbarism. Headline:        China warns US, S. Korea of ‘consequences’ over THAAD land swap deal

China announced that Washington and Seoul will face “consequences” over a land swap deal which will allow the US to host its THAAD missile defense system on South Korean soil – a move which Beijing claims will undermine its own ballistic capabilities. The agreement, which involves a land swap between Seoul and retail giant Lotte, was approved on Monday. “We received a message that the board approved the exchange of land for THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) deployment,” the South Korean Defense Ministry said in a statement, as quoted by AFP. That news was met with disapproval from China’s Foreign Ministry, with spokesman Geng Shuang claiming the system “severely disrupts regional strategic balance and jeopardizes the strategic security interests of regional countries including China.” Beijing “will definitely take necessary measures to safeguard its security interests,” he said during a news briefing, adding that “all the consequences entailed will be borne by the US and the Republic of Korea.” Beijing says that THAAD – which is being deployed in response to threats from nuclear-armed North Korea – will not help peace and stability in the Korean Peninsula, and called on Seoul and Washington not to go ahead. China also claims the missile defense system, which has powerful radar capable of penetrating Chinese territory, will undermine Beijing’s own ballistic capabilities.

Headline:    Welcome Aboard… But First US Marshals Will Scan Your Retina

For some 15 years, airport security has become steadily more invasive. There are ever more checkpoints, ever more requests for documents as you make your way from the airport entrance to the airplane. Passengers adapt to the new changes as they come. But my latest flight to Mexico, originating in Atlanta, presented all passengers with something I had never seen before. We had already been through boarding pass checks, passport checks, scanners, and pat downs. At the gate, each passenger had already had their tickets scanned and we were all walking on the jet bridge to board. It’s at this point that most people assume that it is all done: finally we can enjoy some sense of normalcy. This time was different. Halfway down the jetbridge, there was a new layer of security. Two US Marshals, heavily armed and dressed in dystopian-style black regalia, stood next to an upright machine with a glowing green eye. Every passenger, one by one, was told to step on a mat and look into the green scanner. It was scanning our eyes and matching that scan with the passport, which was also scanned (yet again).  Like everyone else, I complied. What was my choice? I guess I could have turned back at the point, decline to take the flight I had paid for, but it would be unclear what would then happen. After standing there for perhaps 8 seconds, the machine gave the go signal and I boarded. I talked to a few passengers about this and others were just as shaken by the experience. They were reticent even to talk about it, as people tend to be when confronted with something like this. I couldn’t find anyone who had ever seen something like this before. I wrote friends who travel internationally and none said they had ever seen anything like this. I will tell you how it made me feel: like a prisoner in my own country. It’s one thing to control who comes into a country. But surveilling and permissioning American citizens as they leave their own country, even as they are about to board, is something else. Where is the toggle switch that would have told the machine not to let me board, and who controls it? How prone is it to bureaucratic error? What happens to my scan now and who has access to it?  Homeland Security: “As part of U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s (CBP) border security mission, the agency is deploying new technologies to verify travelers’ identities – both when they arrive and when they leave the United States – by matching a traveler to the document they are presenting. CBP’s goal is to enhance national security and protect a traveler’s identity against theft through the use of biometrics. Biometric information (such as finger, face, or iris) measures a person’s unique physical characteristics. CBP incorporated fingerprints for biometric identification and verification in 2004, and is now testing facial and iris imaging capabilities to help improve travelers’ identity protection, the integrity of our immigration system, and our national security “

Headline:  ‘Let’s revive Europe!’ European leaders call for ‘FEDERAL UNION’ to save crumbling EU

Two weeks after David Stockman warned that “the market is apparently pricing in a huge Trump stimulus. But if you just look at the real world out there, the only thing that’s going to happen is a fiscal bloodbath and a White House train wreck like never before in U.S. history” and exclaimed that, when looking at markets, “what’s going on today is complete insanity” he is back with another interview, this time with Greg Hunter of USAWatchdog in which he, once again warns, that a giant fiscal bloodbatch is coming soon, and urges listeners to pay especially close attention to the March 15, 2017 debt ceiling deadling, at which point everything could “grind to a halt.” As Greg Hunter writes, former Reagan Administration White House Budget Director David Stockman says financial pain is a mathematical certainty. Stockman explains, “I think we are likely to have more of a fiscal bloodbath rather than fiscal stimulus.  Unfortunately for Donald Trump, not only did the public vote the establishment out, they left on his doorstep the inheritance of 30 years of debt build-up and a fiscal policy that’s been really reckless in the extreme.  People would like to think he’s the second coming of Ronald Reagan and we are going to have morning in America.  Unfortunately, I don’t think it looks that promising because Trump is inheriting a mess that pales into insignificance what we had to deal with in January of 1981 when I joined the Reagan White House as Budget Director.”

Headline:  WHO urges quick development of antibiotics to combat superbugs, warns options are running out

The World Health Organization (WHO) has urgently called for the creation of new drugs to tackle 12 superbugs which do not respond to antibiotics, warning that drug resistance is on the rise. The “priority pathogens” list released by the organization on Monday, catalogs 12 families of bacteria which poses the greatest threat to human health. The list specifically highlights “gram-negative bacteria,” which are resistant to multiple antibiotics. Such bacteria have built-in capabilities to find new ways to resist treatment and can pass along genetic material which allows other bacteria to also become drug resistant. “Antibiotic resistance is growing, and we are fast running out of treatment options. If we leave it to market forces alone, the new antibiotics we most urgently need are not going to be developed in time,” Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny, WHO’s assistant director-general for Health Systems and Innovation, said.

Headline:    Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupts

Guatemala’s Volcano of Fire erupted yesterday, spewing lava and sending up plumes of ash that rained down on nearby communities and could eventually reach the capital, civil protection authorities said. The Volcan de Fuego, one of the country’s three active volcanos, is located about 45 kilometres (28 miles) southwest of the capital Guatemala City. It was the volcano’s second eruption this year. David de Leon, spokesman for the National Coordinator for Disaster Reduction, said the volcanic activity later stabilized and fell within the normal range after an eruptive phase that lasted 13 hours. The rumbling 3,763-metre-high (12,345-foot) volcano registered a powerful eruption from 11:28pm Friday (1328 GMT Saturday in Malaysia). In the afternoon, explosions generated ash columns 4,500 metres above sea level, 500 metres less than in the morning. The longest of three lava flows so far stretched 1,600 metres. Although the ash could travel as far as Guatemala City, it has not yet reached the capital, instead affecting populations in the four departments near the volcano.

Rainstorms and landslides in Chile have contaminated a major river forcing the authorities to cut off drinking water to at least four million people in the capital, Santiago. Officials said the water supply from the Maipo river would be cut to most of the city until the water flowed clear. At least three people have been killed and 19 are missing as rivers overflowed and bridges were washed away. Almost 400 people have been cut off in the Cajon del Maipo mountainous area. Aguas Andinas, which provides the capital with drinking water, said continuing rain was making repairs difficult. The company said it did not know yet when the water supply could be restored.

Headline:     Despite détente with Israel, Turkey to host Hamas confab

Despite the recent thawing of ties between Israel and Turkey, Istanbul is set to play host this weekend to a well-attended conference whose speakers and organizers are either affiliated with Hamas or once held senior posts in the Palestinian terror group. The Conference for Palestinians Abroad is named for the group organizing the event. It has faced vociferous criticism from the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority and Palestine Liberation Organization, who accuse the organizers of undermining the PLO’s position as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people. Hamas’s military wing is one of the bodies publicizing the event, slated for Saturday and Sunday, which is also hosting among its speakers members of the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas has held similar events not just in Turkey, but throughout Africa and Latin America. It uses the Muslim Brotherhood organizational infrastructures in those countries to organize the events, connect to activists, raise funds and engage in public relations worldwide.

Headline:    Jordanians hit streets to protest against austerity tax rises

Headline:  US embassy issues advisory over planned Friday protest

Hundreds of Jordanians protested Friday across the kingdom against the government’s decision to impose new taxes on a string of goods and services, calling on the cabinet to resign. The government earlier this month imposed new sales taxes on internet and mobile use, bread, domestic fuel and petrol, cigarettes and fizzy drinks. About 1,500 Jordanians took to the streets of central Amman after Friday prayers at the Husseini Mosque in a protest organised by the opposition Muslim Brotherhood. The demonstrators marched from the mosque to the seat of the nearby municipality chanting slogans demanding the fall of the government and venting anger at the price rises. “The people of Jordan are on fire, all because of the rise in prices,” some chanted, AFP correspondents said. “The government that raises prices must fall, the government that impoverishes people must go,” was another rallying cry, as demonstrators held up signs that read: “Raising prices is playing with fire.”

Lebanon

Headline:        Lebanon: What a Challenge to Hezbollah Means for the Region

Lebanon’s powerful Hezbollah militia, which is locked in a political standoff in Beirut over key legislation, embroiled in the Syrian conflict and on alert for possible military skirmishes with Israel, may have yet another challenge to deal with. A previously unknown group, Liwa al-Mazlumin (Brigade of the Oppressed), has reportedly posted flyers in Beirut’s southern suburbs decrying the absence of effective governance and policing. Since Hezbollah has long controlled the area, the act is clearly meant as a criticism of the Shiite militant group. In particular, Liwa al-Mazlumin is aggrieved by the lack of efforts to combat the widespread use of narcotics and other drugs in Lebanon, especially among young people. Hezbollah has been unwilling to confront the groups that control the illicit narcotics trade in Lebanon because its involvement in the Syrian conflict has stretched its forces thin. Furthermore, the militant organization also profits from transnational drug trafficking through the Bekaa Valley, where the groups operate. So far, the new group’s protests are focused locally, but they could have widespread regional implications. If Liwa al-Mazlumin manages to challenge Hezbollah’s control in southern Beirut, the militant group may have to turn its attentions from Syria and Israel to work on quelling dissent in its stronghold and preventing adversaries from exploiting its vulnerability.

Headline:  Saudi-backed forces, Sudanese Army advance north of Yemen’s Mocha Port

A suicide bomber killed eight people at a Yemeni army base Friday as clashes between pro-government forces and Houthi rebels left 35 dead and five civilians died in shelling, security and local officials said. The bomber blew up his vehicle at the entrance to Najda Camp in Abyan province’s capital Zinjibar, just 55 kilometers (33 miles) from second city Aden where the government is based.
The attacker failed to get through the gate and heavy exchanges of fire ensued as other assailants tried to penetrate it. The explosives were concealed in the back of a pick-up truck under a pile of firewood, the sources said. Al-Qaeda, which has taken advantage of nearly two years of fighting between loyalists and rebels who control the capital Sanaa to entrench their presence in swathes of the south, claimed responsibility for the attack, the SITE Intelligence Group reported. Further north, in the central province of Baida, fierce clashes erupted Friday between pro-government tribes and Shiite Houthi rebels, a local official said. Twenty rebels and six tribal fighters were killed in heavy fighting near Walad Rabi district, the source said, adding that the clashes flared when the Houthis tried to take control of a tribal territory.

Headline:    Iraq carries out airstrikes against ISIS targets in Syria – PM statement

The Iraqi prime minister said he had directed the military to conduct airstrikes against Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) targets in Syrian territory. The strikes come in response to recent bombings in Baghdad, he added. “We are determined to chase terrorism that tries to kill our sons and citizens wherever it is found, so we gave orders to the air force command to strike Islamic State positions in Hosaiba and Albu Kamal inside Syrian territory as they were responsible for recent bombings in Baghdad,” Haider al-Abbadi said in a statement. “The heroes of the sky executed the operation and responded to the terrorists with amazing success.” IS claimed responsibility for a deadly attack that took place on February 16 in southern Baghdad, when a car bomb blast ripped through the area, killing at least 45 and injuring dozens. Albu Kamal was targeted by the US-led coalition earlier this week. On Thursday, three strikes engaged an IS unit and also destroyed four oil refinement stills and a vehicle. Later in the day, an Iraqi military commander has confirmed the airstrikes “were successful,” adding that they involved F-16 fighter jets, AP reported. A seniour security official told Reuters “the strikes targeted Islamic State’s headquarters used for making car bombs in Albu Kamal… after Iraqi intelligence received tips from their sources inside Syria.”

Headline:  As 30-day deadline to Pentagon for ISIS plan nears, Trump to weigh options

The Pentagon will present to President Donald Trump a “full range of options” to fight Islamic State (ISIS) that could include U.S. boots on the ground in Syria. “I’m in the business of providing the president with options,” Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said on Feb. 23. Following through on a campaign promise, Trump on Jan. 28 ordered a 30-day review of the U.S. strategy on ISIS. Defense Secretary Jim “Mad Dog” Mattis is expected to present the president with the plan next week, according to the Pentagon. “We’ve been given a task to go to the president with options to accelerate the defeat of ISIS specifically, but obviously other violent extremist groups as well,” Dunford said. “So we’re going to go to him with a full range of options from which he can choose.” The Trump administration reportedly scrapped a detailed plan left by former President Barack Obama’s administration that outlined a strategy to train Kurdish forces, provide them with new equipment, and help them retake Raqqa, instead telling the Pentagon to come up with new options, according to a Feb. 23 report by McClatchy’s D.C. Bureau. In his first week in office, Trump said he would “absolutely do safe zones in Syria” for people displaced by the violence in order to stem the flow of refugees from the country, a move that would require boots on the ground. Headline:  Russia Vows To Veto Sanctions On Syria Over Chemical Weapons

Russia says it is ready to veto a draft UN resolution calling for sanctions against Syria over the use of chemical weapons on civilians. “There is an argument that the resolution itself contradicts the fundamental principle of presumption of innocence before the investigation is over,” said Vladimir Safronkov, Russia’s deputy UN ambassador, after a Security Council meeting. Safronkov told reporters there is “tremendous pressure” on an inquiry into the use of chemical weapons in Syria to produce a one-sided result. “We will veto it,” Safronkov said of the resolution if it was put to a vote. The inquiry is run jointly by the United Nations and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). Russia is the largest international backer of the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad. Safronkov’s statement later drew a rebuke from U.S. Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley.

Headline:      Syria: ‘Car bomb kills 51’ near al-Bab (Aleppo province) after IS defeat

A car bomb has killed at least 51 people in a rebel-held village near the Syrian town of al-Bab, sources in the region and monitors say. The blast – claimed by Islamic State (IS) militants – destroyed a rebel post in Sousian, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a monitoring group. The village is 8km (five miles) north-west of al-Bab, from which Turkish-backed rebels drove out IS on Thursday. Turkey says the rebels now have “control of all neighbourhoods” there. “Activities continue to clear areas under control of obstacles, mines and hand-made explosives,” the country’s military said. IS claimed the car bomb attack, in a statement carried by its Amaq news outlet. Many civilians were gathering to seek permission to return to al-Bab when the bomb exploded, the opposition-run Qasioun news agency said.

Headline:    Iraqi forces storm Mosul airport, military base

U.S.-backed Iraqi security forces captured Mosul airport from Islamic State on Thursday, advancing on multiple fronts towards the jihadists’ last major stronghold in the western half of the city. The troops have gained ground rapidly in outlying areas south of the city, Iraq’s second largest, since launching a new phase of a four-month offensive to terminate Islamic State’s territorial holdings in the country. Elite counter terrorism forces joined the battle on Thursday in the southwest, entering the Ghozlani army base and pushing towards the districts of Tal al-Rayyan and al-Mamoun. Federal police and an elite interior ministry unit known as Rapid Response drove Humvees flying Iraqi flags into the perimeter of the airport, and state television later said they had taken full control of the heavily damaged facility. Islamic State fought back with suicide car bombs, drones carrying grenades and mortars, Reuters correspondents in the area said. The burnt corpses of two militants and the motorcycle from which they had fired at Iraqi forces were lying under a tree, apparently hit by an air strike. “Daesh (Islamic State) resistance is not inconsiderable but they are trying to save their strength for inside the city,” First Lieutenant Ahmed al-Ghalabi of the Rapid Response force said outside the airport’s main entrance.

Ezekiel 38:13: “Sheba, Dedan, the merchants of Tarshish, and all their young lions will say to you, ‘Have you come to take plunder? Have you gathered your army to take booty, to carry away silver and gold, to take away livestock and goods, to take great plunder?’”’   As the attack begins, we see specific nations that are mentioned which only give their formal protest against the invading armies. The nations which give their formal protest are not engaged in the battle. Sheba and Dedan in verse 13 are modern day Saudi Arabia. Great Britain is what is referred to in the Old Testament as Tarshish. The nations which broke away from Great Britain are the United States, Canada, and Australia; these nations are considered the young lions of Tarshish or Great Britain in modern day terms.

Headline:      USA could be ‘associate member’ of Commonwealth to reap rewards from forgotten ‘treasure’

THE United States could eventually become an “associate member” of the Commonwealth, according to plans being drawn up by the Royal Commonwealth Society. The move, which is said to have the backing of the Queen, is believed to have come about because of US President Donald Trump’s love of Britain and the Royal Family. With the UK making plans to leave the European Union (EU) officials are keen to build up international relations through the Commonwealth in an number of areas, including trade. Director of the Royal Commonwealth Society Michael Lake told The Telegraph: “The UK rather left this treasure in the attic, and forgot about it because people were so glued to Brussels.” Mr Lake said the plans had been hastened by the “opportunity of a new president, and the slightly dangerous but great fun opportunity that the ‘Bad Boys of Brexit’ offered”. The director added that opening a branch in the US would help cement ties with America, opening up new connections in Anglo-American relations. Mr Lake wrote a letter to Mr Trump, which was transported by Andrew Wigmore, a close aide to Nigel Farage which was then handed to the US President by the former UKIP leader. Mr Lake wrote in his letter that opening a Commonwealth branch in America would help the UK and the US “find imaginative ways” in which they could work together. The two men, along with businessman Arron Banks visited Mr Trump shortly after his election and Mr Farage continues to have close links with the Republican President. Mr Wigmore is said to be “very positive” by the response from the US.

Headline:           Turkey Ramps Up Pressure on Washington to Abandon Syrian Kurds

Top Turkish officials are increasing pressure on the United States to dissolve the American military partnership with Syrian Kurds in the battle against Islamic State. With just days to go before the Pentagon is expected to deliver to U.S. President Donald Trump a new war plan to defeat Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, Turkey, a NATO ally, is urging Washington to earmark Syrian opposition groups aligned with Ankara for the push to drive Islamic State militants from their de facto capital of Raqqa in Syria. This week, there has been a parade of senior Turkish officials making the point publicly time and again, urging the U.S. to drop its support of the Kurds and exclude the Kurdish People’s Protection Units, or YPG, from the assault to capture Raqqa. Instead, they want the U.S. to train and arm Syrian militias who have been fighting alongside the Turks in northern Syria in Operation Euphrates Shield, a months-long Turkish intervention in northern Syria west of Raqqa aimed at clearing both IS and the YPG from territory close to the Turkish border.

Headline:  Iran is training its military college students in Syrian war zones

Speaking on Wednesday at a conference in Tehran, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani urged Arab countries not to sign peace agreements with Israel. Rouhani claimed that Arab states, located close to or far from Israel, should not adopt the position that Israel and Zionism are not the enemy of most Muslim countries. He also claimed that the Palestinian issue is the most critical one in the Muslim world. The Iranian president made the speech during the closing ceremony of the two-day “Sixth International Conference in Support of the Palestinian Intifada”.  Meanwhile, Iran announced that it sent the officers of Imam Hussein Military University to Syria to be trained in the field in the ranks of the revolutionary guards forces stationed in different parts of the country to fight the opposition factions and suppress the six-year-long uprising of the Syrian people against the regime of Bashar al-Assad. VOA news radio shed light on the comments of General Morteza Safari, commander of the Revolutionary Guards, who told Tasnim agency that “about 100 officers from the Imam Hussein faculty, a subsidiary to the Revolutionary Guards, were sent to Syria to train in combat situations.” Safari revealed that a number of students who were sent in the two-month mission have been killed in the battlefield, others were injured, while the rest of them stayed there for a longer period of time.” The Imam Hussein University of the Revolutionary Guards has announced that it sent its students to fight in Syria and Iraq under a dedicated training program to prepare officers.

Afghanistan

Headline:    Warning Update: The Expansion of ISIS in Northwestern Afghanistan

Headline:  Taliban claims it downed Afghan helicopter

ISIS Wilayat Khorasan may be developing a regional powerbase in northwestern Afghanistan. Former Taliban militants operating in the name of ISIS executed international aid workers and held others captive in a prison in Jowzjan Province in February 2017, a step change in ISIS’s operations in Afghanistan. ISIS may increasingly use this hub to regenerate manpower as it suffers losses elsewhere, threatening US and NATO interests in multiple regions across Afghanistan. Malign external actors like Russia and Iran could also use ISIS’s expansion in the region to validate their support of Taliban militants and undermine the U.S. and NATO. The expansion of ISIS’s Caliphate in Afghanistan would grant ISIS an additional logistical hub to receive and train foreign fighters as it becomes more difficult for foreign fighters to join ISIS in Iraq and Syria.  Meanwhile, The Afghan Taliban claimed it shot down an Afghan military helicopter in Kunduz yesterday as it was returning from an operation in the neighboring province of Takhar. Afghan officials later claimed that the helicopter made an “emergency landing” after encountering mechanical problems. In the past, Afghan officials have been less than forthcoming about the loss of aircraft as a result of enemy fire. The Taliban reported yesterday on Voice of Jihad, its official propaganda outlet, that “Mujahideen of the Islamic Emirate shot down an enemy attack helicopter Thursday in Dashti Archi district of Kunduz as two of the enemy helicopter gunships were en route back to Kunduz from Takhar.” The Taliban also claimed it “seized” two DShK machine guns from the wreckage.

Libya

Headline:        Tripoli fighting continues for second day

Al-Burki and Ganiewa armed brigades continued Friday their heavy exchange of fire in Tripoli for the second day. Both rival groups engaged in heavy street fighting in Abu Salim neighborhood leaving around 10 gunmen from both sides dead. The two warring groups traded accusations over abduction of their fighters, igniting the clashes in densely populated areas. Social media users posted several photos and videos showing the intense exchange of fire and damage caused to civilians’ properties. Ceasefire efforts reached by mediators last night have failed. The Libyan Red Crescent managed to evacuate a family from the clashes zone while many others are still trapped. Ganiewa armed group, which is under the Interior Ministry of Presidency Council, claimed on Friday its control of Al-Burki’s barracks, but the latter was quick to deny this. There was no comment from the UN-installed Presidency Council, but the Salvation Government urged in a statement both sides to stop fighting and called its military units to get ready for intervention to suppress the chaos if both parties refused to comply with the ceasefire calls.

Morocco

Headline:    Morocco urges UN to end Polisario ‘provocation’

Morocco’s King Mohammed VI on Friday asked the United Nations to take urgent measures to end “provocation” by the Algeria-backed Polisario Front threatening the ceasefire in the disputed Western Sahara. Morocco insists that the former Spanish colony is an integral part of its kingdom, but the Polisario is demanding a referendum on self-determination. The two sides fought for control of the Western Sahara from 1974 to 1991, with Rabat gaining control of the territory before a UN-brokered ceasefire took effect. Mohammed VI spoke on Friday with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres to deplore “repeated incursion by armed Polisario men” in the Guerguerat district, a royal court statement said. The king said that Polisario “provocation” and “premeditated” action in the region took place a month before Morocco rejoined the African Union in January. Morocco had quit the then Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1984 after the bloc admitted the former Western Sahara as a separate member. Mohammed VI urged Guterres to “take urgent and necessary measures to put an end to this inadmissable situation which is seriously threatening the (1991) ceasefire and placing regional stability at risk,” the statement said.

Headline:  Bernie Sanders: Town hall protests are just the beginning

Organized leftist protesters who are “bent on dividing the nation” are engaging in “political thuggery” and sabotaging Republican town hall events, GOP congressmen say. Thousands of leftists, as part of a nationwide “storm-the-town-halls” strategy, organized by groups like the George Soros-funded MoveOn.org, are creating media buzz as they shout down lawmakers at the GOP town halls, Valerie Richardson reported for The Washington Times on Feb. 22. Rep. Louie Gohmert of Texas and other Republicans are opting during the congressional recess for town halls conducted by phone, at least “until the threat of violence at town hall meetings recedes,” he said. “Unfortunately, at this time there are groups from the more violent strains of the leftist ideology, some even being paid, who are preying on public town halls to wreak havoc and threaten public safety,” Gohmert said in a letter to his constituents. “The concerns are more than hypothetical,” Richardson’s report said, noting that the 71-year-old district director for Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, California Republican, “hit her head, fainted and was hospitalized” Feb. 14 after activists with Indivisible, a new protest group, tried to force open the office door. A 2-year-old girl was also knocked down in the tussle. Furious, Rohrabacher blasted the protesters as “part of a nationwide, anti-Trump mobilization” who are “engaged in political thuggery, pure and simple.”

South African police have used rubber bullets, tear gas and water cannon to disperse crowds at an anti-immigrant march in the capital, Pretoria. A low-flying police helicopter was deployed to break up a stand-off between local protesters and foreigners, with both groups armed with sticks, bricks and knives. President Jacob Zuma said the protests were “anti-crime” not “anti-foreigner”. Many unemployed South Africans accuse migrants of taking their jobs. Mr Zuma has condemned recent acts of violence and intimidation directed at African immigrants living in South Africa. Earlier this week, angry mobs attacked Nigerians and looted shops belonging to Somalis, Pakistani and other migrants in townships around Pretoria and parts of Johannesburg. “They [foreigners] should know that this they are a guest in my house. I am treating them with respect. They should treat me with respect,” one angry protester told the BBC’s Nomsa Maseko at the scene. Nigerians in South Africa were “notorious” for dealing drugs, he added, calling for greater checks on foreigners coming into the country.

Headline:     China builds shelters for missile systems in South China Sea

Headline:  US Flexes Its Military Muscle Off China

China has built structures to house surface-to-air missile systems at three outposts in the disputed Spratly Islands, according to a U.S. think tank. Satellite images of the islands analyzed by the Center for Strategic and International Studies show Beijing may have started construction on the buildings between late September and early November 2016. The timing of the expansion “indicates they are not reactions to the political cycle in Washington, but rather part of a steady pattern of Chinese militarization,” according to CSIS. The presence of SAM batteries on the islands would strengthen China’s defense capabilities throughout the nine-dash line, a demarcation line used by China to claim large areas of the South China Sea. A total of eight buildings have been completed, with each structure measuring about 66 feet in length and 33 feet in width. “This could allow transporter-erector-launcher vehicles carrying missiles – like the HQ-9 SAM systems China has already deployed on Woody Island [in the Paracels] – stationed within the structures to fire from inside without exposing themselves,” according to CSIS.

Headline:  Trump vows military build-up during CPAC speech

US President Donald Trump said he would make a massive budget request for one of the “greatest military buildups in American history” on Friday in a feisty, campaign-style speech extolling robust nationalism to eager conservative activists. Trump used remarks to the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), an organization that gave him one of his first platforms in his improbable journey to the US presidency, to defend his unabashed “America first” policies. Ahead of a nationally televised speech to Congress on Tuesday, Trump outlined plans for strengthening the US military, already the world’s most powerful fighting force, and other initiatives such as tax reform and regulatory rollback. Trump said he would aim to upgrade the military in both offensive and defensive capabilities, with a massive spending request to Congress that would make the country’s defense “bigger and better and stronger than ever before.” “And, hopefully, we’ll never have to use it, but nobody is going to mess with us. Nobody. It will be one of the greatest military buildups in American history,” Trump said.

Headline:         Royal Bank of Scotland losses more than treble to £7bn

Royal Bank of Scotland has reported a £7bn annual loss as past problems continue to dog its performance. The deficit is more than treble 2015’s loss of £2bn. It is the ninth year in a row RBS has failed to make a profit. The loss came as the bank set aside more money to deal with legal action in the US and its abandoned attempt to spin off its Williams & Glyn business. RBS plans to cut costs by £2bn over the next four years, which will mean job cuts and further branch closures. Chief executive Ross McEwan told the BBC the cost cuts were “huge, and unfortunately there will be job losses amongst that”. “Branches have been closing and will continue to close. The shape of a branch is changing, and what people do in a branch is changing,” he added. The bank – which is 72%-government owned – has racked up more than £50bn of losses since the £45.5bn taxpayer bailout during the financial crisis.

Headline:    Chicago Has Deadliest Day of 2017, Seven Killed, Including Pregnant Woman

After suffering its most dangerous year for decades, Chicago is already on track for an even worse year of bloodshed, murder, and crime as Tuesday counted seven dead in a single day. The victims included a pregnant woman. Just after 9 PM on February 22, Chicago police found a 20-year-old man and a pregnant woman shot in the city’s Chatham neighborhood, Chicago’s WGN TV reported. The man was found shot in a parked car and the woman was discovered lying on a sidewalk. The victims were taken to a nearby hospital but both were pronounced dead. The male shooting victim was a known gang member. The name of the female victim is not being released. Thus far this year, Chicago has already suffered 99 homicides with 94 of those deaths by firearm. 2017 is also already ahead of 2016 with over 400 shooting victims. By the end of February last year the city saw only 202 shootings with 46 dead.

Headline:     Witches Casting ‘Mass Spell’ On Donald Trump

Witches of the world are uniting against the President of the United States, and it might just spark off a war of spells vs. prayers. A document has been circulating around the internet recently, detailing a “A Spell to Bind Donald Trump and All Those Who Abet Him (version 2.0).” Presumably, version 1.0 was unsuccessful, but witches are nothing if not resilient. While the instructions don’t give a clear idea of what the spell is supposed to do or what ‘binding’ Trump will accomplish, it is very inclusive. “This binding spell is open source, and may be modified to fit your preferred spiritual practice or magical system,” the description reads. The spell is scheduled to be cast on Friday, Feb. 24 at midnight, and is counting on “the mass energy of participantsnationwide to be effective. In addition to some incantations, the spell involves “an unflattering picture of trump (small),” a “tiny stub of an orange candle,” and an “ashtray or dish of sand.”

Headline:  Pope Praises ‘Precious’ Torah to Rabbis, Calls for Interfaith ‘Covenant’

Headline:  Pope Francis: ‘Better to Be an Atheist’ Than a Hypocritical Catholic

Pope Francis on Thursday received a group of Rabbis led by his long time friend from Buenos Aires, Rabbi Abraham Skorka, Vatican Radio reported. The delegation offered a new edition of the Torah. “The Torah, which Saint John Paul II called ‘the living teaching of the living God’ (Address for the Twenty-fifth Anniversary of the Declaration “Nostra Aetate”, 6 December 1990, manifests the paternal and visceral love of God, a love shown in words and concrete gestures, a love that becomes covenant. The very word covenant is resonant with associations that bring us together. God is the greatest and most faithful covenantal partner. He called Abraham in order to form from him a people who would become a blessing for all peoples of the earth. God desires a world in which men and women are bound to him and as a result live in harmony among themselves and with creation. “The fraternal and institutional dialogue between Jews and Christians is now well-established and effective, made so by encounters that are ongoing and collaborative. The gift that you are making to me today is fully a part of this dialogue, which finds expression not only in words but also in gestures. The extensive introduction to the text and the editor’s note emphasize this dialogical approach and communicate a cultural vision of openness, mutual respect and peace that accords with the spiritual message of the Torah. The important religious figures who have worked on this new edition have paid special attention both to the literary aspect of the text and to the full-color illustrations that add further value to the publication.

Headline:         Christians flee Egypt’s Sinai after militant killings

Suspected Islamic militants gunned down a Christian man inside his home in northern Sinai, officials and a priest said Friday, the latest in a string of sectarian killings there that has sent hundreds of Christians fleeing and raised accusations the government is failing to protect the community. The militants stormed the home of Kamel Youssef, a plumber, on Thursday and shot him to death in front of his wife and children in the town of el-Arish, said two security officials and the priest. The officers spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to reporters, as did the priest, fearing retaliation by militants. The priest said initial reports that the man’s daughter was kidnapped and killed turned out to be incorrect. No militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack. But Egypt’s Islamic State group affiliate, which is based in the Sinai Peninsula and which in December carried out a devastating suicide bombing against a Cairo church, vowed in a video earlier this week to step up attacks against the embattled Coptic Christian minority. It described them as “infidels” empowering the West against Muslims. That stoked panic among Christians, who before Thursday’s death had already seen six members of their community killed in recent weeks. Over the past two days, around 75 Christian families — hundreds of people — have arrived from Sinai in the city of Ismailia on the Suez Canal, according to Mina Thabet, a researcher with the Egyptian Commission for Rights and Freedoms who visited the families.

Headline:     PA leader calls on EU to recognize ‘Palestine’

Rami Hamdallah, the head of the Palestinian Authority (PA) government in Ramallah, on Monday urged all the European Union member states to recognize “Palestine”. Hamdallah made the comments during a meeting with a delegation representing the Palestine Committee in the European Parliament. “There is a greater need than in the past for all EU countries to recognize an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with its capital in East Jerusalem,” he said, adding such a move would be an “act of support for the efforts of the Palestinian leadership to end the occupation and to save the two-state solution.” During the meeting, reported the official PA news agency WAFA, Hamdallah presented to the delegation proof of alleged human rights violations committed by Israel against Palestinian Arabs, its “settlement expansion activities”, land confiscation and demolitions of homes and facilities, especially in Area C and in particular those financed by the European Union. Hamdallah called on the EU countries to pressure Israel to stop building new communities in Judea and Samaria, stop its alleged confiscation of land and violations of international law and humanitarian law. PA officials have repeatedly urged members of the EU to recognize “Palestine”. The last such call came earlier this month from chief PA negotiator Saeb Erekat.

Headline:  ISIS claims rocket fire on southern Israel

Headline:  ISIS releases ‘proof’ it fired rockets on Israel

The Islamic State (ISIS) jihadist organization on Tuesday evening claimed responsibility for firing two rockets on the Eshkol Regional Council in southern Israel on Monday. A statement quoted by the Amaq news agency, considered the mouthpiece of ISIS, said, “Islamic State fighters yesterday attacked the residents of the Israeli Eshkol region with two Katyusha-type rockets, south of Palestine.” The IDF said on Monday that the two rockets were fired into Israel from the Egyptian-controlled Sinai Peninsula. The rockets landed in open areas in the Eshkol region in the western Negev. No injuries or damage were reported. The rocket attack came a day after ISIS claimed that five members of its Sinai Peninsula branch were killed in an Israeli drone attack on Saturday night. The attack took place near the Sinai border with the Gaza Strip, outside of the city of Rafah. According to the Amaq news agency, the five terrorists killed in Saturday’s strike had been preparing to fire a rocket at Israel.

Headline:     ISIS affiliates gaining ground in Golan offensive

ISIS-affiliated groups opened a major offensive in the tri-nation border of Israel, Syria and Jordan, attacking various rebel factions and have managed to take control of four villages—Adwan, Saham al-Jawlan, Jalin and Tasil—in addition to the strategic southwestern suburb of Daraa, which is the capital of Hauran. Areas change hands somewhat frequently, but a rapid victory on this scale has not been seen in some time. This could be one of the reasons why the Golan-area “Khaled ibn Al-Walid Army” has been getting a lot of screen time on ISIS media outlets. Ahrar al-Sham, one of the Salafist groups fighting the ISIS affiliates, admitted to losing fighters in the area of Hait, which appears to be the focal point of fighting between the two groups. On the third day of fighting, the Amaq News Agency reported that 104 rebel fighters had been killed and ISIS was maintaining control of the villages despite fighting raging in other areas. The leader of the Khaled ibn Al-Walid Army—an amalgam of the Yarmouk Martyrs Brigade, the Islamic Muthanna Movement and the Army of Jihad—is Abu Mohammad al-Magdisi, a Palestinian by birth. Despite the focus of ISIS being on other rebel groups in the area, Israel and Jordan are both watching events in the area closely, with the prospect of ISIS gaining more control in the area worrying to both countries.

Headline:        IDF jets allegedly attack Hezbollah targets in Syria overnight

Israeli jets allegedly struck targets near the Syrian capital overnight on Wednesday, reportedly a weapons shipment to the Shiite militant group Hezbollah, Lebanese media reported. Syrian media reported witnesses hearing “loud explosion sounds” in the early morning hours. According to Lebanese media, the targets that were hit around 3.00 a.m. were affiliated with the Assad regime and were the regime army’s 3rd Division in the al-Katif suburbs of the capital. The report also claimed that the IDF struck from within Lebanon, circling the Beqaa Valley and Baalbek, so as not to be blocked by the Russian defense systems operating in the area. The IDF Spokesperson’s Unit declined to comment on the reports as the army does not respond to foreign reports. The alleged attack comes after a week during which Hezbollah’s leader Hassan Nasrallah made several aggressive statements in an appearance on Iranian television as well as in interviews with the Lebanese media. The terror organization’s leader threatened to attack Israel in the near future, saying that “Hezbollah will have no red lines in the next war with Israel,” and also warned Israel from entering into a conflict with Hezbollah: “Israel should think a million times before it goes to war with Lebanon.” Last week Lebanese President Michel Aoun defended the weapons which Hezbollah has, saying the arms of the terror group are an essential part in defending Lebanon against Israel.

Headline:           Arab-Kurdish fighters enter IS-held Deir al-Zour province

A US-backed alliance of Kurdish and Arab rebels has advanced into territory held by so-called Islamic State (IS) in Deir al-Zour province, eastern Syria. Kurdish military sources said the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) had captured some 15 villages from IS. Unidentified air strikes killed 11 people in one IS-held village, though it was unclear if this was linked. The SDF hopes to cut IS’s supply lines from the oil-rich province to the group’s stronghold Raqqa, in the north. Syrian government forces in Deir al-Zour have also been battling to push out IS, which commands most of the province as well as its capital of the same name. The latest development comes just days before UN-sponsored talks between the Syrian government and opposition in Geneva, Switzerland – the first such meeting in nearly a year. A nationwide ceasefire – which excludes IS – took effect in December after peace talks in Kazakhstan. The deal was brokered by Russia and Iran, both allies of the Syrian government, as well as Turkey, which is supporting some of the rebels. Kurdish military sources said on Tuesday it was the first time the SDF alliance, which includes the Kurdish YPG militia and Arab fighting groups, had crossed into Deir al-Zour province. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights described the operation as the SDF’s biggest incursion yet into Deir al-Zour province.

Headline:     US troops have come ‘under fire’ in and around Mosul, official says

U.S. troops have come “under fire” and have “returned fire” in and around Mosul as allied forces try to retake the city from ISIS, a U.S. military spokesperson said on Wednesday. “When someone is shooting at you, that is combat,” said Col. John Dorrian, the Baghdad-based spokesman, to Pentagon reporters. While Dorrian said U.S. troops are operating “very close” to the front lines, he also added they do their best to avoid it, although circumstances can change where exactly the front lines are. The news comes days after the U.S. commander of American and allied forces in Iraq and Syria told Fox News’ Jennifer Griffin and other traveling press in Baghdad that U.S. troops were operating closer than ever to the front lines.

Headline:        Ayatollah: We will liberate ‘Palestine’, remove cancer of Israel

Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, called for the “complete Liberation of Palestine” on Tuesday, and slammed the Jewish state as a “cancerous tumor”. The comments were made at the Sixth International Conference in Support of the Palestinian Intifada, a government-sanctioned event held in Tehran. According to the Mehr news agency, representatives of 80 countries joined the event, which glorifies terrorism and acts of wanton violence against Jews and advocates in favor of the destruction of the Jewish state. During his address, which was broadcast live on Iranian state television, Khamenei said efforts to destroy Israel must be “incremental”. “This cancerous tumor, since its start, has grown incrementally and its treatment must be incremental too.” The Ayatollah also praised violent attacks against Israelis, arguing that they have brought Israel’s enemies closer to their goal of destroying the Jewish state. “Multiple intifadas and continuous resistance have succeeded in achieving very important incremental goals,” said Khamenei.

The scenes took place just hours after the country’s Prime Minister, Stefan Löfven, slammed Donald Trump for claiming Sweden was in crisis as a result of its liberal refugee policy. Stockholm police were forced to fire a shot into the crowd in the hard-hit suburb of Rinkeby, after a mob of around 30 began attacking officers with rocks. Violence erupted after the police had tried to arrest a wanted person on the subway. Sylvia Odin, of the Stockholm police, said: “There was stone throwing and they were placed in a situation where a number of people jointly attacked and threw stones. Headline:     Brazil’s poorest region suffers worst drought in a century

The semiarid northeast of Brazil, known as the Sertao, is used to rain shortages but no one can remember a drought like this. There has been almost no rain since 2012 and the leafless, desiccated landscape has the appearance of having been in a vast fire. Rivers and reservoirs that used to serve rural populations are not coping. The authorities estimate that reserves are at six percent capacity, with some completely emptied. Experts say that a cocktail of factors has produced the disaster: a strong El Nino in the Pacific, heating of the north Atlantic and climate change that has seen temperatures in Ceara rise by 1.3 degrees Celsius (2.4 degrees Fahrenheit) in 50 years. Everyday activities, even washing clothes or drinking, have become a luxury in the Sertao, which extends across eight states. The region has 25 million inhabitants and of them three million have insufficient water, according to state government figures — a ratio that shoots up for those living in the countryside. Rural communities depend on government water trucks, which fill cisterns. Even so there is only enough for about 20 liters (5.3 gallons) a day per person, far off the World Health Organization’s recommended 50 to 100 liters a day, for drinking, cooking and sanitation.

A Pennsylvania school district capitulated to the demands of a militant atheist who filed a federal lawsuit demanding the district remove a Ten Commandments monument erected on a public high school campus. New Kensington-Arnold School District agreed to remove the massive monument within 30 days – ending a lawsuit filed in 2012 by self-avowed atheist Marie Schaub. Schaub claimed the 6-foot stone monument erected outside Valley High School was a religious symbol and therefore was a violating of the U.S. Constitution. “It’s unfortunate that many people in my community don’t understand or appreciate the separation of church and state, but I hope this settlement serves as an important lesson,” she told the Valley News Dispatch. Schaub also claimed the monument was offensive to her and her daughter. I can only imagine which commandment she found to be most offensive. Maybe it was the one about graven images.

Headline:    Netanyahu admits attending secret peace summit

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed Sunday morning that he met secretly a year ago with the leaders of Egypt and Jordan in a failed bid by the Obama administration to convene a wider regional summit on Israeli-Palestinian peace. Speaking to ministers from his Likud party, Netanyahu said that he had participated in a clandestine meeting on February 21, 2016 in the Jordanian Sea resort of Aqaba with the then US secretary of state John Kerry, Jordan’s King Abdullah and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi. During the summit, according to a report in Haaretz, Kerry presented a regional peace initiative which allegedly included recognition of Israel as a Jewish state and that would renew negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians. However, the initiative to involve other Arab states in the pursuit of peace with the Palestinians ultimately fizzled out, the newspaper said, after Netanyahu withdrew his initial support, pointing to opposition within his right-wing government. A spokesman for Netanyahu declined to comment on the report. Al-Sisi’s office issued a statement referring to the news report, without mentioning a specific newspaper, as having “incorrect information” but did not deny that a meeting took place. No immediate comment was available from Jordan. The Egyptian president also emphasized during a meeting with a delegation of leaders from Jewish leaders in the US that a two-state solution was just, and was a top priority. “The establishment of peace will bring about a new reality that will enable regional countries to make social and economic developments that the peoples of the states except,” al-Sisi said. He also added that peace would end one of the most important excuses used by terror organizations to justify their acts. In addition, efforts are continuing among Arab states to renew contact between Israel and the Palestinians. Indeed, Jordan’s king met Sunday with members of the US Congress in Amman.

Headline:   Two rockets from Sinai explode in southern Israel; none hurt

Two rockets launched from the Sinai Peninsula exploded in southern Israel’s Eshkol Regional Council on Monday morning, the IDF reported. No air raid sirens were activated in the area as the projectiles were headed toward open territory, a military source added. There were no reports of injury or damage in the incident. Monday’s rocket attack came the day after Islamic State-linked media claimed that an unmanned Israeli drone had bombed and killed four members of ISIS in Egypt in the northern Sinai region. According to the Islamic State linked Amaq agency, the four “fell as martyrs to the Jewish enemy” in a strike which targeted a car carrying the militants in the village of Shibana located south of the town Rafah. Earlier this month the group claimed responsibility for a rocket barrage fired from the Sinai towards Israel’s Red Sea resort of city of Eilat. The Iron Dome missile system intercepted three projectiles while a fourth landed in open territory.

Headline:      ‘Hezbollah might have game-changing naval missiles’

Western intelligence agencies have expressed “grave concerns” that Hezbollah has been able to obtain strategic naval weapons that could change the balance of power in the Middle East. Despite great efforts attributed to Israel over the past five years to prevent Hezbollah from getting its hands on such weapons, the Lebanese terror organization is believed to have been able to smuggle into Lebanon a certain amount—likely no more than eight—of P-800 Onyx missiles, also known in export markets as Yakhont. The information, which was passed among several intelligence agencies, is based on what was defined as “highly reliable sources.” The Russian supersonic anti-ship cruise missile is regarded as the naval equivalent of the antiaircraft S-300 and is considered the best of its kind in the world. It can be fired from the shore and has a range of up to 300 kilometers. There is no known electronic defense system that could deal with it or intercept it. According to Israeli intelligence officials, Hezbollah could use the Onyx missiles to significantly threaten the Israeli Navy, the US Sixth Fleet and civilian vessels in the Mediterranean, as well as Israel’s newly built oil and gas rigs. Headline:       Saudi Arabia praises Trump, warms up towards Israel

Iran is the biggest threat to the Middle East, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister said, adding that he looks forward to working with the Trump administration to overcome challenges in the region, including the Arab-Israeli conflict. In apparent agreement with the Israelis, Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister accused Iran of being the primary supporter of global terrorism. “Iran remains the single main sponsor of terrorism in the world,” Adel al-Jubeir declared in an address to the Munich Security Conference on Sunday. “It’s determined to upend the order in Middle East, and until and unless Iran changes its behavior it would be very difficult to deal with a country like this.” “I believe that the world has to make it clear to the Iranians that there is certain behavior that will not be tolerated, and that there will be consequences, and those consequences have to be in tune with the financial side,” he affirmed. Al-Jubeir added that he was “very optimistic about the Trump administration,” which had recently put “Iran on notice.” “We look forward to working with the Trump administration on all issues,” al-Jubeir said. “I believe progress can be made in the Arab Israel conflict, if there is a will to do so,. We know what the settlement looks like, if there is just the political will to do so. And my country stands ready with other Arab countries to work to see how we can promote that.”

It is feared in Amman that the Russian bombardment may send a fresh wave of Syrian refugees to the border clamoring for entry.

Headline: Turkish forces resume Al-Bab offensive in east Aleppo

Turkey is no longer considering a military operation to capture the city of Raqqa from the Islamic State, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim told journalists in Munich on Sunday. “The United States, Turkey along with local forces, civilian forces, the FSA [Free Syrian Army] and other militias… they are at the forefront while we are at the back,” Yıldırım told reporters at the conference he is attending in Germany. Yildirim’s statement to journalists comes just one week after Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan claimed his armed forces would go to Al-Raqqa after their Al-Bab operations. While the Turkish Army will not go to Al-Raqqa, they will continue to provide assistance to the rebel forces participating in the upcoming offensive, Yildirim added.

Headline: Mosul battle heats up as Iraqi forces fight ISIS near airport

Iraqi government forces have seized several villages as they move towards an assault on the last area held by the so-called Islamic State (IS) in Mosul. Hundreds of military vehicles, backed by air power, rolled across the desert towards IS positions early on Sunday. The progress on Sunday in the south of the city, the second biggest in Iraq, takes them within striking distance of Mosul airport. Fears have been voiced about the safety of many thousands of trapped civilians. The offensive was formally announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi early on Sunday. Army Staff Lieutenant General Abdulamir Yarallah said in a statement that elite Rapid Response units captured the villages of Athbah and Al-Lazzagah – two villages south of Mosul airport. Government forces retook the eastern side of the city, the last major IS stronghold in Iraq, last month. But military officials say the western side, with its narrow, winding streets, may prove a bigger challenge. For now, there is no advance from eastern Mosul as all bridges from there to the west of the city, across the Tigris river, have been destroyed.

Headline:        Turkey dismisses 227 more judges, prosecutors in post-coup probe

Headline: ‘President Erdogan assassination plot’ trial opens in Turkey

Turkey dismissed 227 more judges and prosecutors on Monday as part of investigations into last July’s failed coup, the state-run Anadolu agency said, meaning close to 4,000 members of the judiciary have now been purged. Turkish authorities have detained, sacked or dismissed more than 100,000 people from the police, military, public service, judiciary, and elsewhere since the abortive coup over suspected ties to U.S.-based Muslim cleric Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of orchestrating the putsch. Gulen, who has lived in self-imposed exile in Pennsylvania since 1999, has denied the charge and condemned the coup. With the latest dismissals, the High Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSYK) has now dismissed more than 3,886 members of the judiciary since the July 15 putsch, Anadolu said. Rights groups and some Western allies fear President Tayyip Erdogan is using the coup as a pretext to stifle dissent. The government argues the purges are justified by the extent of the threat to the state on July 15, when rogue soldiers commandeered tanks and fighter jets, killing at least 240 people.

Headline: Threatening US, Iran general says his country will be a ‘graveyard’ for attackers

Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard is to conduct military drills next week, a senior commander announced Saturday, despite warnings from the United States and fresh sanctions over a ballistic missile test. “The manoeuvres called ‘Grand Prophet 11’ will start Monday and last three days,” General Mohammad Pakpour, commander of the force’s ground units, told a news conference. He said rockets would be used without specifying which kind. In early February, Iran conducted drills involving short-range missiles at a time of heightened tensions with the United States. The Islamic republic said the exercises were aimed at demonstrating Iran’s “complete preparedness to deal with the threats” and “humiliating sanctions” from Washington. US President Donald Trump slapped fresh sanctions against Tehran’s weapons procurement network following a ballistic missile test on January 29. “Iran would do well to look at the calendar and realize there’s a new president in the Oval Office. And Iran would do well not to test the resolve of this new president,” Vice President Mike Pence said earlier this month. New Pentagon chief James Mattis, for his part, has branded Iran “the single biggest state sponsor of terrorism in the world”. Iranian officials have rejected the threats emphasising that the missile programme is purely defensive.

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that in the last two days, Tehran has dispatched large-scale Revolutionary Guards forces from central Iran to Falahiyeh, a town in the southern Ahwaz oil region which is dominated by a restive population of Arab descent.. Violent riots erupted there after security forces killed a young man with shots to the head and opened fire on two motorcyclists, who apparently tried to ram a Guards checkpoint. The rioters set fire to police stations and the vehicles of local officials.

Headline:     Pakistan, Afghanistan Move to Defuse Border Tensions

Pakistan and Afghanistan have issued conciliatory statements in an apparent attempt to defuse days of border tensions stemming from charges Afghan soil was used for masterminding last week’s terrorist attacks in Pakistani cities. Pakistani troops have been staging cross-border shelling to target what authorities claimed were camps of Jammat-ul Ahrar, or JuA, a splinter faction of the anti-state Pakistani Taliban for being behind most of the deadly violence. Islamabad maintains that JuA leaders are sheltering in Afghan border areas from where they plot and direct violence against Pakistan. Security officials also confirmed Monday, the military deployed additional heavy artillery at main border crossings to deter illegal movements. However, Pakistani military chief, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, Monday explained his troop build up along the Afghan border and enhanced security arrangements are aimed at fighting “common enemy” of terrorism. “Pakistan and Afghanistan have fought against terrorism and shall continue this effort together,” the general told a security meeting of his top commanders in Rawalpindi, where the military is headquartered. Bajwa also called “for more effective border coordination and cooperation” with Afghan security forces to prevent cross-border movement of terrorists and other illegal activities, according to a statement released by the military’s media wing after the meeting.

Headline: Egypt, Tunisia, Algeria FMs issue declaration on resolving Libyan crisis

Libyan Prime Minister Fayez Sarraj of the UN-backed government in Tripoli said on Sunday he would like Russia to help overcome deadlock in the country, which is struggling with divisions among militias and an extremist militant threat. In an interview with Reuters, Sarraj expressed hope that Moscow might act as an intermediary between him and Khalifa Haftar, a military commander who is supported by factions based in the east of Libya. Sarraj’s Government of National Accord has been trying to formulate plans for unified Libyan security forces since arriving in Tripoli in March, but has made little progress. Asked whether Moscow could become a useful intermediary to pass on political messages or pressure to Haftar, Sarraj said “Yes”. “We hope that Russia will play a positive role in resolving the Libyan crisis,” he said on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference. “We hope that anyone getting involved in Libya will have a positive effect in the sense that the message that I want to sit down with the other Libyan parties reaches them.” Sarraj has already held talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and Moscow’s ambassador in Libya. Referring to these meetings, he said: “We sent a clear message, we don’t want to exclude any military leaders. We want to unite the military forces, we want to fight against terrorism together, we want military forces to come under a political umbrella.”

Headline: MPs debate withdrawing Trump’s state visit to UK

Headline: Democrats Suggest Invoking The 25th Amendment Unless Trump “Gets A Grip”

If it’s beginning to feel like protests are happening every day of the week, that’s because they are. The first two months of 2017 have been jammed with one protest march after another, and for many newly-christened activists, the hours in between are spent calling elected officials and obsessively reading news updates. This week is no different. Thursday’s “Day Without An Immigrant” saw rallies and marches nationwide, followed by Friday’s “General Strike” in over 100 cities. On Saturday, President Trump’s Florida campaign rally was met with protests, and thousands attended a Muslim solidarity rally on Sunday in New York. Monday may be a federal holiday, but activists aren’t taking a break: streets will be filled with “Not My President’s Day” protesters around the country. “Not My President’s Day” rallies are taking place in at least 25 cities. Over 20,000 people responded to the Los Angeles protest’s Facebook event, and a statement on the page explains opposition to the Trump administration.  Meanwhile, MPs have accused US President Donald Trump of acting “like a petulant child” and having a “protozoan” intellectual capacity in a debate on the state visit offered to him by Theresa May. In a packed Westminster Hall, MPs have gathered to debating a petition signed by more than 1.85 million people calling for the visit to be stripped of the trappings of a state occasion in order to avoid causing “embarrassment” to the Queen.

Headline:     Somalia Mogadishu car bomb: At least 34 people killed

At least 34 people have been killed and about 50 injured in a car bomb blast in the Somali capital, Mogadishu. The car blew up in the city’s southern Madina district, officials say. The blast – which ripped through shops and food stalls – is the first major attack in the capital since the election of President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed earlier this month. No group has claimed responsibility, although al-Shabab militants are likely to be the prime suspects. On Saturday a senior al-Shabab commander vowed to target the president’s supporters. President Mohamed has condemned the bombing, accusing al-Shabab of being behind the attack. He urged Somalis to unite against the group’s brutality. The new president visited some of the wounded, as well as the site of the blast on Sunday. He has offered a $100,000 reward to anybody who supplies information leading to the capture of those responsible. “It was a horrific and barbaric attack only aimed at killings civilians,” he said.

Headline: At least five killed in protests over Guinea teachers’ strike

At least five people were killed in Guinea’s capital of Conakry on Monday in protests sparked by a teacher’s strike, the government said, reviving labor tensions in a country where previous strikes have led to dozens of deaths. Government spokesman Damantang Albert Camara later told Reuters that a deal to end the strike was signed with Guinea’s main teachers’ unions on Monday evening. The unions had launched the strike on Feb. 1 to protest the government’s decision to dismiss or cut the salaries of many junior teachers after the latest civil service exams, and many of their students had taken to the streets in recent days to support them. Unidentified assailants on Monday morning attacked a police station and demonstrators clashed with gendarmes in several districts of Conakry, witnesses said. “By midday, these demonstrations had unfortunately caused the deaths of at least five people,” the government said in a statement, calling the protest “illegal and forbidden”. It added that 30 people had been injured, including members of the security forces, and 12 arrested. Witnesses told Reuters that three of the dead had been shot but it was not possible to verify that information.

Headline:      French protests against police violence move to central Paris

Headline: Paris rioters tear gassed

Anti-racism groups and other protesters rallied in Paris on Saturday to support victims of police violence after a young black man was allegedly raped with a police baton earlier this month. Paris police installed a security perimeter around Saturday’s rally on the Place de la République in eastern Paris. Far-right presidential candidate Marine Le Pen, meanwhile, urged the government to ban the protest out of respect for police who are ensuring public safety in France during the country’s ongoing state of emergency. Demonstrators carried banners reading “Justice for Théo,” the name of the 22-year-old alleged rape victim, and called for justice in the investigation. The protesters argue that Théo is just one example of many young men unfairly targeted by police in ID checks and sometimes abused. “There’s a lot of support for Théo,” FRANCE 24’s Julia Kim said on Saturday. “We’re seeing 1,000, possibly 2,000 people. “Police have closed all access into the Place de la République … but all-in-all it seems rather calm.” Théo, whose last name has not been released, was hospitalised for two weeks after the reported attack in his hometown of Aulnay-sous-Bois northeast of Paris. A local youth worker, Theo has become a symbol for minorities who stand up to police violence. One officer has been charged with rape in the case, and three others with aggravated assault. All deny intentional wrongdoing.

Headline: Thousands Of Romanians In 20th Day Of Anti-Government Protests

Thousands of Romanians turned out for the 20th day in a row on Sunday to protest against the government, which demonstrators accuse of trying to protect corrupt politicians. Despite heavy rain, 3,000 people protested in front of parliament in Bucharest while another 3,000 demonstrated in the country’s second biggest city, Cluj. The protests, which at their peak were the biggest since the fall of Communist leader Nicolae Ceausescu in 1989, began when the new government passed a decree in late January decriminalizing some corruption offences. It eventually rescinded the decree, which had drawn sharp criticism from President Klaus Iohannis as well as from abroad, as the mass protests continued across the country, but the Social Democratic government has refused to resign. Romania’s upper house of parliament, the Senate, voted unanimously to endorse the decision to scrap the decree on Tuesday, though the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, has not yet approved it, making demonstrators concerned it could still come into effect.

Headline:  US twin sea buildup against China, NKorea, Iran

Headline: Global arms trade highest since Cold War

Donald Trump marked his first month as US President with two major military gambits in the Middle East, Asia and the South China Sea. Early Sunday, Feb. 19, the US Navy said that the Nimitz-class USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier and strike group had begun patrols in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. With them are three air squadrons coming from their Naval Air Station Lemoore: the USS Lake Champlain guided missile cruiser and two guided missile destroyers, the USS Michael Murphy and the USS Wayne E. Meyer. The deployment comes after Beijing’s warning that a US naval unit sailing near the disputed Spralys, where China has built islands and a military presence, would be seen as a violation of sovereignty, which the US and Japan refuse to recognize. The Trump administration’s move therefore opens up a potential arena of confrontation between the US and China.  It also caries a message for North Korea, which Trump has called “a big, big problem and we will deal with that very strongly.” A week ago, on Feb. 12, North Korea launched a missile, using new “cold eject” technology which makes it possible to fire a missile from a submarine. Military experts in Washington and Jerusalem estimate that once Pyongyang has perfected the system, it will be passed to Tehran, an eventuality covered in Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s White House talks with President Trump last week, our sources reveal. Our military sources add that while Washington has publicly announced the transfer of a naval-air force to the South China Sea, the deployment of the large 11th Marine Expeditionary Combat Unit to the Gulf of Aden and Red Sea is being kept low key. The conventional thinking until now was that, in the event of an Iranian clash with the US or Gulf states, including Saudi Arabia, Tehran would push back by blocking the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Today, American forces have been placed in position to prevent Iran from blocking the Strait of Mandeb, and so choking the main sea route used by oil and merchant shipping sailing to and from the Mediterranean via the Suez Canal, by posting missile bases on Yemen’s western Red Sea coast. The 4,500-strong contingent of MEC marines and sailors is supported by the fighters and attack helicopters on board the USS Makin Island amphibious assault ship, the USS Somerset amphibious transport and the USS Comstock dock landing ship. Their task is to keep the strategic waterway open and safe.

Headline:   United Nations Capital Development Fund-  Better Than Cash Alliance

The United Nations ‘Better than Cash Alliance’  currently has 25 nations that are members of the alliance. All are working on creating a cashless (digital) society for their countries. Pakistan, Afghanistan, Columbia, Peru, India, Philippines, Kenya, and Mexico are a few of the members. If we think about our global banking system, we can conclude that all banks are now part of the digital Swift payments system. Competitive payment systems which are emerging in Asia are also digital systems. All this is because we now have a computer driven global economy. Computers, algorithms, and select software programs determine what is happening within our global cyber markets. All businesses are converting their accounting systems to digital and this means that the ‘Mark of the Beast’ financial system is essentially here now. The implementation of the ‘Mark of the Beast’ system will likely start after our current bubble economy crashes. Our governmental authorities will then demand that everyone follow precise rules which mandate their economic behavior. Authorities will likely demand that everyone give allegiance to their digital (cashless) financial system. Those who refuse to comply will be restricted from using the system for their survival. This starts the clock for the ‘Mark of the Beast’ system which has been prophesied in scripture. Either you comply with the State or you must barter for your goods and services and take the risk of being arrested.

Headline: South Sudan declares famine in Unity State

A famine has been declared in parts of South Sudan, the first to be announced in any part of the world in six years. The government and the United Nations report that some 100,000 people are facing starvation, with a million more on the brink of famine. A combination of civil war and an economic collapse have been blamed. There have been warnings of famine in Yemen, Somalia and north-eastern Nigeria, but South Sudan is the first to declare one. The famine is currently affecting parts of the Unity state in South Sudan, but humanitarian groups have warned that the crisis could spread if urgent help is not received. Aid agencies, including the UN World Food Programme (WFP) and the children’s fund Unicef, said that 4.9 million people – more than 40% of South Sudan’s population – are in urgent need of food.

Headline:     ISIS Egypt affiliate: Christians are ‘our favorite prey’

An Islamic State affiliate released a video Monday vowing that Egyptian Christians are their “favorite prey,” showing images of a suicide bomber who killed nearly 30 people inside a packed Cairo church in December. “God gave orders to kill every infidel,” one of the militants carrying an AK-47 assault rifle says in the 20-minute video. The video shows footage of Egypt’s Coptic Christian Pope, Christian businessmen, judges and priests who either speak of the need to protect the minority or use derogatory terms to refer to Egypt’s Muslim majority. The narrator says Christians were no longer “dhimmis,” a reference to non-Muslims in Islam who enjoy a degree of state protection. Instead, the group describes the Christians as “infidels” who are empowering the West against Muslim nations. The video shows footage of Abu Abdullah al-Masri, a masked militant who blew himself up at the central Cairo church in December, killing 28 people, most of which were women and children. The attack, says a narrator, was “only the beginning. The video carries the logo “Egypt” instead of the normal “Wilayat Sinai” or the state of Sinai. It suggests the terrorists are trying to expand their operations to the rest of the country, Reuters reported. The message comes at a time when attacks on Coptic Christians have escalated in Sinai. In the past month, at least three Christians were gunned down in separate drive-by shooting attacks in the city of el-Arish.

Headline:        California Told To ‘Brace For Evacuation’ As Storm Approaches

Residents in parts of California have been told to prepare for an imminent evacuation as a powerful storm threatens to cause flooding across many parts of the State.  As the first outer rain bands from a Pacific storm touched Northern California on Sunday, residents in the Central Valley were told to be prepared to leave their homes amid fears that severe flooding could hit the State on Monday and Tuesday as the severity of the storm is expected to worsen. On Sunday, the weather service issued a flood warning in urban areas and along small streams through Thursday for the counties that make up the Sacramento and northern San Joaquin valleys, as well as for most of the counties that sit along the Valley’s rim. “We may see flooding in locations which haven’t been impacted in many years,” the alert reads. In other words, those living anywhere near a river, a slough, a levee, a creek or a canal need to be ready to flee floodwaters at a moment’s notice.

Headline:    Arab League, UN reiterate call for two-state solution

The secretary-generals of both the Arab League and the United Nations reiterated their calls on Thursday for a two-state solution between Israel and the Palestinian Authority (PA). “It requires a comprehensive and just settlement based on a two-state solution and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state on 1967 borders with its capital in Jerusalem,” said Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit, according to the Egyptian news outlet MENA (Middle East News Agency). Gheit was essentially calling for Israel to relinquish all territory won by Israel during the Six-Day War of 1967, in accordance with the guidelines of the Saudi Peace Initiative presented in 2002. Gheit’s remarks followed a joint press conference on Wednesday between Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump in which both leaders noticeably avoided making any explicit commitment to a two-state solution.

The prime minister brought up the issue of the Golan both at his meeting with Trump at the White House on Wednesday as well as with Vice President Mike Pence on Thursday. After the meetings, Netanyahu told reporters that the US leaders’ response was “not Earth shattering.” According to an Israeli official, Netanyahu also spoke with Pence about ways to advance the issue with regard to the mountainous area that Israel captured from Syria in the Six Day War and then annexed in 1981. The United States and the international community have never recognized Israeli sovereignty in the Golan Heights. Israel has long argued that it must maintain that territory for security reasons and hopes that the Trump administration might take a different stance on the matter.

Headline:   Terrorism makes January Israel’s bloodiest month since June

Five Israelis were killed in January by Palestinian terrorists, making the month the deadliest since June 2016, according to Israel’s security service. The Shin Bet recorded a total of 100 attacks in January, which left 16 wounded, according to its monthly report published earlier this week. Four of the victims were killed in Jerusalem on Jan. 8 when the assailant drove his truck into a crowd of soldiers. One man was killed the previous week in Haifa. Of the attacks documented last month, 81 involved the hurling of firebombs. December 2016 had seen 98 attacks. Separately, on Thursday, Palestinians accused a driver they claim is an Israeli settler of deliberately hitting a Palestinian man with his car at the entrance to the West Bank town of Beit Ummar, near Hebron. Rafat Muhammad Shihdeh Abu Arrar Masalmeh, 36, was struck while approaching the parked car of his brother on the shoulder of the road, according to a report by the Palestinian Ma’an news agency. The report did not specify his condition or name the driver. The report quoted a man described as a “local activist” of saying the settler hit Masalmeh deliberately and then fled the scene.

Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah called on Israel to dismantle its nuclear reactor in Dimona on Thursday, warning that it poses a threat to Israel’s existence should it be hit by one of Hezbollah’s missiles. Nasrallah made a similar threat against Haifa’s ammonia tank last year, saying that a missile hitting the facility could have the affect of a nuclear bomb. Last week, a Haifa court ordered the tank closed, citing the security threat. Speaking in a televised speech commemorating Hezbollah’s slain leaders, Nasrallah said that Hezbollah sees Israel’s emptying of the ammonia tank as a sign that it fears the Lebanese Sh’ite group. “I call on Israel not only to empty the ammonia tank in Haifa, but also to dismantle the nuclear reactor in Dimona. Our military capabilities will strike Israel and its settlements,” he warned. Nasrallah also suggested that Israel has been emboldened by the election of Donald Trump as US president. “Trump’s election does not scare us, even if claims that he will give [Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu the green light to wage a war on Lebanon turn out to be true,” Lebanese news website Naharnet quoted Nasrallah as saying.

Headline:    Saudi Arabia ‘purchasing offensive weapons’

Military analysts at IHS Jane’s have revealed that Saudi Arabia and several other Western-backed Arab countries in the Middle East are purchasing weapons suited for a more offensive military program in distant locations. The UK-based group specializing in defense and intelligence analysis said Saudi Arabia is purchasing “items intended to boost the attacking capabilities of warplanes, such as precision air-to-ground missiles, advanced guidance systems and air-to-air refueling gear that extends the duration of flights,” according to media reports on Friday.

A large number of foreign soldiers taking part in the Saudi Coalition’s offensive in west Yemen were killed on Friday after a Houthi missile struck their positions near the Mocha Port. According to Houthi media, their forces fired several Katyusha rockets at the Saudi Coalition’s defenses, causing a significant number of casualties in the Al-Jadid area south of Mocha. Since losing the Mocha Port, the Houthi forces have carried out several hit-and-run attacks to harass the Saudi Coalition forces and their allies.

Headline:      3 soldiers killed, 4 injured during raid in Egypt’s central Sinai

Three army soldiers were killed and four others injured in an explosion in the El-Halal mountain area in central Sinai, the Egyptian army said on Friday. The explosion occurred during a raid on “terrorist hideouts” by the third field army and police forces in the area. The raid also resulted in the death of three militants and the arrest of three others, an army spokesman said on his official Facebook page. Egypt’s army and police forces have been waging a war over the past three years against an Islamist militant insurgency in North Sinai. Hundreds have been killed in the violence.

Headline:   Can Trump rescue his Syria deal with Putin?

Headline:    Pentagon might propose sending ground troops to speed up anti-Isis fight in Syria

Overlaying US President Donald Trump’s extraordinary, hour-long skirmish with reporters Thursday, Feb. 16, was bitter frustration over the domestic obstacles locking him out from his top security and foreign policy goals. Even before his inauguration four weeks ago, he had arranged to reach those goals by means of an understanding with President Vladimir Putin for military and intelligence cooperation in Syria, both for the war on the Islamic State and for the removal of Iran and its Lebanese surrogate Hizballah from that country. But his antagonists, including elements of the US intelligence community, were turning his strategy into a blunderbuss for hitting him on the head, with the help of hostile media. Thursday, in a highly unconventional meeting with the world media, he tried to hit back, and possibly save his strategy. That won’t be easy. The exit of National Security Adviser Mike Flynn, the prime mover in the US-Russian détente, sent the Kremlin a negative signal. The Russians began unsheathing their claws when they began to suspect that the US president was being forced back from their understanding. The SSV 175 Viktor Leonov spy ship was ordered to move into position opposite Delaware on the East Coast of America; Su-24 warplanes buzzed the USS Porter destroyer in the Black Sea. Before these events, Washington and Moscow wre moving briskly towards an understanding. debkafile’s intelligence sources disclose that the Kremlin had sent positive messages to the White House on their joint strategy in Syria, clarifying that Moscow was not locked in on Bashar Assad staying on as president. At all events, his administration seems to be at a crossroads between whether to try and salvage the partnership with Russia for Syria, or treat it as a write-off. debkafile’s sources report that the relations will quickly roll downhill without a strong hand to haul them back. It is up to Donald Trump to show whether or not he is capable of breaking through the siege clamped down on him by his enemies and save his key foreign policy goals. His next moves are being watched very intently in many parts of the world, especially in Middle East capitals. Governments in Tehran, Riyadh, Ankara, Damascus, Beirut, Abu Dhabi, Cairo and Jerusalem are bracing to jump either way.

Headline:       Turkish forces lose ground as ISIL’s counter-offensive begins in Al-Bab (Aleppo province)

The Islamic State (ISIS) forces struck back against the Turkish Army and their rebel allies on Friday, seizing several points from the latter inside Al-Bab City. According to the Islamic State’s official media wing, their forces recaptured the Shehabi Farms at the northern gates of Al-Bab after a battle with the Turkish Army and their rebel allies on Friday afternoon. With Shehabi Farms under their control, the Islamic State will now attempt to retake Aqil Hill from the Turkish Armed Forces in the Al-Bab countryside. If ISIS is successful in their quest to recapture the Aqil Hill, then they will have reversed most of the gains made by the Turkish Armed Forces in Al-Bab.

Headline:  Complete Syrian War update: February 2017

Over the course of two months, the Syrian conflict has seen drastic changes at several fronts, including areas that have not seen fighting for years. Among the biggest changes this year is the battlefront in Damascus, which has seen the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) in control of much of the western countryside and large parts of the nearby East Ghouta region. With a number of reconciliation agreements put together at the end of the year (e.g. Wadi Barada and Serghaya), the Syrian Arab Army managed to secure almost the entire provincial border with the Golan Heights, leaving only Beit Jinn under militant control.
Southern Syria: (Dara’a Governorate, Sweida Governorate) U.S. backed rebel forces have seized several points from the Islamic State terrorists near the Jordanian border, giving them a large buffer-zone around the Tanf Crossing into Iraq.
Syrian Desert Front: (Palmyra, Deir Ezzor Governorate) Syria’s vast desert landscape has been the scene of some of the most intense battles taking place inside the country.
Northern Syria: (Aleppo and Al-Raqqa governorates) Syria’s northern front is its most active front, with several groups fighting one another

Headline:       Baghdad car bomb kills at least 48

At least 48 people have been killed in Baghdad in the third blast in the Iraqi capital in three days, security and medical sources say. A car packed with explosives blew up near car dealerships in the Shia area of Bayaa in the south of the city. More than 50 people were injured. The Islamic State (IS) group claimed the attack, saying it targeted “a gathering of Shias”. At least 24 people were killed in other attacks on Tuesday and Wednesday. Baghdad saw a wave of deadly suicide attacks by IS in the first few days of 2017, but the number had dropped until recently. An AFP reporter at the scene of Thursday’s bomb reported seeing numerous burnt-out vehicles, and blood on the ground.

Headline:  Islamic State readies for close combat in alleyways of west Mosul

Islamic State militants are developing a network of passageways and tunnels in the narrow alleys of west Mosul that will enable them to hide and fight among the civilian population when Iraqi forces launch an attack that is expected any day now. Residents said the fighters have been opening passages in the walls between houses to allow them to move from block to block undetected, disappear after hit-and-run operations and track government troop movements. They have also opened sniper holes in buildings overlooking the Tigris river bisecting the city into east and west, they said.
“They opened these holes and threatened us not to close them,” one resident told Reuters by telephone, asking not to be identified by name or location because Islamic State executes anyone caught communicating with the outside world. The militants are essentially under siege in western Mosul, along with an estimated 650,000 civilians, after US-backed forces surrounding the city dislodged them from the east in the first phase of an offensive that concluded four weeks ago.

A car bomb attack targeting government lodgings in southeastern Turkey has killed a 3-year-old child and wounded 15 people, an official said. The bomb exploded near the homes of judges and prosecutors in the mainly-Kurdish town of Viransehir, in Sanliurfa province, which borders Syria. The state-run Anadolu Agency quoted Sanliurfa governor Gungor Azim Tuna as saying the attack was carried out with an explosives-laden vehicle, killing the child and wounding 15 others. Anadolu said medics and police were dispatched to the area, which was immediately sealed off.

Headline:  Damascus condemns Turkish ‘violations of sanctity & unity of Syrian land’ in letters to UN

The Syrian Foreign Ministry has condemned Turkey’s “repeated crimes and attacks” on the Syrian people as well as violations of Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, in two letters to the UN, Syria’s SANA news agency reports. The ministry expressed its discontent with Turkey’s actions in letters sent to the UN secretary general and the current president of the UN Security Council. In the letters, the Syrian authorities ask the UNSC to exert influence on Ankara and force it to put an end to “repeated crimes and attacks against the Syrian people and violations of the sanctity and unity of Syria’s territory,” SANA writes. Damascus says that Turkey’s “aggression against Syria” has continued for five years and involves “providing various forms of military, material and logistic support to the terrorist organizations and facilitating the entry of foreign militants into Syria.” The Syrian Foreign Ministry again demanded that the UNSC fulfill its responsibilities to preserve international peace and security. The statement comes a day after SANA reported that 24 people, including 11 children aged under six and eight women, were killed in Turkish airstrikes and shelling of the northern Syrian town of Al Bab.

Headline:  Iran’s Rouhani under fire as tensions with U.S. rise

Sending US ground troops to Syria to fight ISIS will fan flames of extremism in the region that will impact the security of the whole world, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour Friday. He also said that the agreement with Iran to limit its nuclear program — brokered in 2015 by the US, Iran and five other world powers — will stay in place, despite noises to the contrary from members of US President Donald Trump’s administration. Speaking on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, Zarif said there was an international consensus not to let the agreement — which took two years to negotiate — unravel. “I believe everybody, including experts in the United States, know this was the best deal possible for all concerned, not just Iran but the US too,” he said. “It was a triumph of diplomacy over coercion, because coercion doesn’t work any more.” Regarding Syria, where Iran is in alliance with Russia in supporting the government of President Bashar al-Assad, the 57-year-old Iranian diplomat said it was the US “occupation” of Iraq that had created ISIS. Zarif claimed that a nationwide ceasefire in Syria — brokered by Russia and Turkey in December — was largely working, and said that sending US soldiers to fight ISIS would add fuel to the fire.

Headline:      ISIS thriving in Libya 6 years after revolt against Gaddafi

Headline:      Arab League envoy to visit Libya for talks with rival factions

On this day six years ago, a popular uprising erupted in Libya against the 42-year-old regime of Colonel Muammar al-Gaddafi. Nato famously stepped in, ostensibly to protect civilians, with the backing of France and the US. Eight months later, Gaddafi was dead and the Libyan regime was history. So too, it appears, was the entire country. Libya has descended into uncontrollable chaos. Power cuts are routine, topped with water shortages, hyperinflation, a liquidity crisis, and rule by militia. The capital itself is very unsafe, especially at night, manned by men with guns who are far more influential than the UN-backed National Accord Government that is struggling to assert full control of the country since assuming power last March. Meanwhile, The special envoy to Libya appointed by the Arab League Salah Al-Din Al-Jamali told Al-Ahram on Wednesday that he will visit the war-torn country soon for talks with the Libya’s various political rivals. “I will visit several cities including Tripoli, Benghazi and Tobruk to support the Arab effort to reach a political solution in Libya,” Al-Jamali told Al-Ahram, adding that coordination between Libya’s neighbours and other Arab countries should contribute to achieving peace in the country. The Tunisian ambassador Al-Jamali was appointed by the Arab League as its special envoy to Libya in November. Al-Jamali welcomed and praised Egyptian efforts to bridge the gap between the different positions of Libyan factions during meetings held earlier this week in Cairo.

Headline:    Tunisia: North Africa’s new jihadi hotbed

Headline:  Tunisia army clashes with militants in mountains, two killed: ministry

Headline:  Tunisia extends 2015 state of emergency

There were great hopes for Tunisia when it became the only country in the Arab Spring of 2010-12 to make the transition to democracy. Now the country, a top source of foreign fighters, is facing a crisis with many soldiers heading home and others seeping into Europe. Hundreds of those Tunisian fighters are now returning home and the police forces of the Tunisian and European governments are scrambling to determine whether some of the most violent Tunisian jihadis will continue their battles on Tunisian and European soil. Tunisia, the only democracy to emerge from the Arab Spring that blew through North Africa and the Middle East between late 2010 and 2012, has now become, by a wide margin, the top source of foreign fighters in Syria. The two deadliest terrorist attacks in Europe in the past year were the work of two Tunisian-born assailants, though neither had fought in the Middle East. The first, on July 14, in Nice, France, saw Mohamed Lahouaiej-Bouhlel use a truck to mow down and kill 86 people, injuring more than 400 others. On Dec. 19, a young drifter and failed asylum seeker named Anis Amri, who had been in prison in Sicily, used the same method – a truck – to slaughter 12 people and injure 56 at a Berlin Christmas market. Less widely reported in the Western media is the virtually endless stream of terrorist attacks on Tunisian soil – dozens since 2011 – leaving hundreds of civilians and terrorists dead. Some of those terrorists had been foreign fighters.

U.S., Russian and French mediators on Friday again urged the parties to the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict to “adhere strictly” to ceasefire agreements after hosting a meeting between the Armenian and Azerbaijani foreign ministers. Foreign Ministers Edward Nalbandian and Elmar Mammadyarov met in Munich late on Thursday shortly after holding separate talks with the three co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group. Andrzej Kasprzyk, the top OSCE official monitoring the ceasefire regime in the conflict zone, was also present at the Nalbandian-Mammadyarov meeting. “The Co-Chairs reiterated that there is no alternative to a peaceful solution to the conflict and that war is not an option, and called upon the sides to exercise restraint on the terrain as well as in their public communications and to prepare their population for peace and not for war,” the mediators said in a joint statement. They warned that the use of force by either party “would be condemned by the international community.” Truce violations along “the line of contact” around Karabakh have intensified in recent weeks

Witnesses and soldiers say 11 people have been killed as Nigerian troops battled Boko Haram suicide bombers and fighters to repel an attack on the outskirts of northeastern Maiduguri city. They say nine suicide bombers and two civilians died early Friday. It was the fiercest attack in months by Boko Haram on the city that is the birthplace of the Islamic insurgency. Police say three female suicide bombers detonated vehicles parked at a truck station around midnight. The two civilians died there. Self-defense fighters say soldiers later fired at gunmen on motorcycles escorting suicide bombers, killing at least six of the bombers.

Headline: Sweeping Pakistani raids on ISIS as Isalmist bombing death toll rose to 88

An Islamic State suicide bomber struck inside a famed shrine in southern Pakistan on Thursday, killing at least 75 people in the deadliest attack in the country in more than two years. The bomber entered the main hall of the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan and detonated his payload amid dozens of worshippers, according to three security officials, who said at least 20 women and nine children were among the dead. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters. Fazal Palejo, a senior health official in Sindh province, confirmed the toll. The Islamic State group claimed the attack in a statement circulated by its Aamaq news agency, saying it had targeted a “Shiite gathering.” The Sunni extremist group views Shiites as apostates and has targeted Pakistan’s Shiite minority in the past. It views Sufi shrines like the one targeted Thursday as a form of idolatry. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif vowed that security forces would track down the perpetrators of the attack, according to Pakistani state TV. “Each drop of the nation’s blood shall be avenged, and avenged immediately,” Pakistan’s army chief, Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa, said in a statement. “No more restraint for anyone.”

Headline:   Russian spy ship ‘loitering’ off Virginia near world’s largest naval base, officials say

The Russian spy ship Viktor Leonov is currently “loitering” off the coast of Norfolk, Va., home to the largest naval base in the world, two U.S. officials tell Fox News. As of Friday morning, the Russian spy ship is slowly patrolling only 17 nautical miles — roughly 19 miles — from land, according to officials. United States territorial waters extend 12 nautical miles from shore. Fox News was first to report the sighting of the Russian spy ship off the coast of Delaware on Tuesday. The Victor Leonov, armed with an array of intelligence gathering equipment used to intercept communications and analyze U.S. Navy sonar capability, later traveled within 30 miles off the Connecticut coast near a submarine base earlier this week. “It’s lawful [and] similar to operations we do around the world,” Pentagon spokesman Capt. Jeff Davis told reporters Friday. At a White House Press conference Thursday, President Donald Trump was asked about the Russian spy ship. “The greatest thing I could do is shoot that ship that’s 30 miles offshore right out of the water. Everyone is going to say that’s so great. That’s not great. I would love to get along with Russia,” Trump said. When the president was later asked about other recent Russian provocations including the buzzing of a U.S. Navy destroyer in the Black Sea roughly 180 miles southwest of Russian held Crimea, Trump responded, “Not good.”

Headline:        Indian Christian Couple Forced to Stand 17 Hours in Freezing Pond for Refusing to Deny Jesus Christ

A 50-year-old Christian convert in India died last month after he and his wife were forced to endure the torture of standing neck deep in a freezing pond for more than half a day after they refused to renounce their faith in Jesus Christ. Global Christian News reports that tribal residents of Kubuaa village in the Jharkhand state were upset that Christian convert Bartu Urawn and his family had left the indigenous tribal religion, Sarna Dharam, and embraced Christianity over 10 years ago. In retaliation for the family’s unwillingness to leave Christianity, the villagers immersed Urawn and his wife in a frigid pond for over 17 hours one winter day last year. Urawn’s son, Beneswar, told the news outlet that the couple was forced to wade in the freezing water from about 5 p.m. until 10 a.m. the next day. After suffering from two paralytic attacks caused by nerve damage and illness, Urawn died on Jan. 20. “All throughout the night, they were in the cold water shivering, and I along with 15 to 20 villagers were witness to the brutality,” Beneswar Urawn explained. “The villagers kept asking my father if he is ready to forsake Christ and return to the Sarna fold. He reiterated every time, ‘I will not deny Christ … I will continue to believe until my last breath.'” Beneswar explained that his family was not the only one in the village that embraced Christianity over 10 years ago, as nine other families also decided to put their faith in Christ. But amid constant demands that the families return to the indigenous religion, seven of the families caved to threats and renounced Christ.

Headline:     AI-Powered Body Cams Give Cops The Power To Google Everything They See

Headline:  Mark Zuckerberg hints at SECRET plans to use artificial intelligence to censor and spy on users

The police body camera industry is the latest to jump on the artificial intelligence bandwagon, bringing new powers and privacy concerns to a controversial technology bolstered by the need to hold police accountable after numerous high-profile killings of unarmed black citizens. Now, that tech is about to get smarter. Last week, Taser, the stun gun company that has recently become an industry leader in body-mounted cameras, announced the creation of its own in-house artificial intelligence division. The new unit will utilize the company’s acquisition of two AI-focused firms: Dextro, a New York-based computer vision startup, and Misfit, another computer vision company previously owned by the watch manufacturer Fossil. Taser says the newly formed division will develop AI-powered tech specifically aimed at law enforcement, using automation and machine learning algorithms to let cops search for people and objects in video footage captured by on-body camera systems. Moreover, the move suggests that body-worn cameras, which are already being used by police departments in many major cities, could soon become powerful surveillance tools capable of identifying different objects, events, and people encountered by officers on the street — both retroactively and in real time.

Headline:       Barren Island volcano erupts again in Andaman Sea

India’s only active volcano in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is erupting once again. The Barren Island volcano, located about 140km northeast of Port Blair, started erupting in 1991 after a dormant phase of over 150 years and has shown intermittent activity since then. A team of scientists led by National Institute Of Oceanography‘s Dr Abhay Mudholkar said that the volcano is active and spewing smoke and lava once again. Researchers from the NIO have sampled the sediments and water in the vicinity of the volcano and recovered coal-like black pyroclastic material representing proximal volcanic ejecta. Clouds were seen at the crater mouth where the smoke was bellowing out in an otherwise clear sky. These samples will help in deciphering the nature of the present and past volcanic activity in the region.

Headline:  Tropical Cyclone Dineo kills seven, wrecks 20,000 houses in Mozambique

Tropical Cyclone Dineo, a Category 4 storm, killed seven people and displaced 130,000 more in Mozambique, the country’s disaster agency reported Friday. “Over 20,000 homes” were destroyed by “winds and very strong rain,” the Mozambique National Institute of Disaster Management said in a statement. It counted 105 schools, 49 hospitals and 52 other public buildings as destroyed in the southern part of the impoverished nation on Africa’s eastern coast. Mozambique frequently endures tropical storms. A flood in 2000, prompted by a storm, killed at least 800 people; another, in 2015, claimed at least 100 lives. The cyclone was downgraded Thursday as it reached South Africa, but the South Africa Weather Service warned that heavy rainfall and flooding are expected. The storm is expected to continue through Saturday; nearly 8 inches of rain and sustained winds of 60 mph are expected in South Africa’s Mpumalanga, KwaZulu-Natal and Limpopo regions, the country’s Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Ministry said.
