Headline: Israel bans northern branch of Islamic Movement
Israel declared the northern branch of the Islamic Movement in Israel an unlawful gathering on Tuesday, effectively outlawing the group led by Sheikh Raed Salah. The decision, made by the Security Cabinet, means that any person or group that officially associates with the organization from now on will be subject to criminal penalties, including arrest. In addition, the organization’s property can be confiscated. Following the decision, police searched more than a dozen of the group’s offices around the country, seizing computers, files and funds. Authorities also froze its bank accounts and said that 17 organizations affiliated with the party were served with orders to close down. Police also called in several of the movement’s members for questioning, including Salah, his deputy Sheikh Kamal Khatib, and the organization’s head of Jerusalem and Al-Aqsa mosque affairs, Dr. Salman Abu Ahmad.

Headline: Two killed in Tel Aviv synagogue attack
Two Palestinian attacks targeting Israelis killed five people Thursday, in one of the bloodiest days for Israel in a nearly two-month-long wave of Palestinian stabbings and other attacks. In the first incident, a knife-wielding Palestinian man stabbed two Israelis in a Tel Aviv office building before being detained by bystanders and handed over to police, according to witnesses. Israeli state radio said security forces were searching for another person who apparently assisted the attacker. Later Thursday, three people, one confirmed as Israeli and another believed to be the assailant, were killed in a shooting and car attack near a Jewish settlement south of Jerusalem. A number of people were wounded. The shooter opened fire and tried to flee the scene before “intentionally” ramming his car into a group of pedestrians, according to the Israeli army. The military said security forces shot at the attacker, “identifying a hit.” “The murderous terror has struck Gush Etzion and Tel Aviv,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said, according to Ynetnews. “My heart is with the families of the murdered and I send my wishes for a speedy recovery to the wounded. Whoever condemned the attacks in France needs to condemn the attacks in Israel. It’s the same terror. Whoever does not do this is a hypocrite and blind.”

Headline: Worldwide Prayer Event to Protect Israel
In the largest event of its kind, an anticipated five million people worldwide are going to connect in prayer via the internet to say psalms for the protection of Israel. Tikkun Haklali Olami is organizing the event on Sunday, November 22, 8:00 pm Israel time, 1:00 pm Eastern Standard time. Tikkun Klali will be recited in unison. Tilkkun Klali (general fixing) is a set of ten psalms established in 1805 by Rabbi Nachman, the founder of Breslov Hasidut, as having special properties for protection and repentance. These particular psalms (16, 32, 41, 42, 59, 77, 90, 105, 137, 150) represent the ten different expressions of song and praise in the book of Psalms. Copies can be downloaded in different languages from the site. Eldad Eilat, one of the organizers of the event, spoke to Arutz Sheva, explaining that the motivation came from the recent wave of terror attacks in Israel and around the world. The impetus came from David Assouline, ““a wonderful Jew and a businessman in the Syrian Jewish community in New York who has worked hard on behalf of the Jewish people. He understands that the current situation of the Jewish people is very delicate, and anything we can do to save ourselves from the ‘bad karma’ created by the atmosphere of terror is important.” “By having so many Jews together we help build that relationship (with God), especially at times of trouble, as so many great sages have pointed out. Especially among rabbis associated with the Breslov movement, the Tikun is considered a very important effort for salvation. So we decided to organize this worldwide event.” Thousands are expected to arrive at the Kotel in Jerusalem for the event, but it can be seen broadcast live on the website.

Headline: UN Security Council calls on Lebanese parties to cease involvement in Syrian crisis
The UN Security Council on Thursday called on all Lebanese parties to cease any involvement in the Syrian crisis, while expressing its concern about the crisis’ negative impact on Lebanon’s stability. In a press statement released here, the 15-nation council urged member states to increase assistance to Lebanon, noting with concern the deep socio-economic impact of the refugee crisis on Lebanon. While condemning the Islamic State (IS) attacks in Beirut, Lebanon, the council members also said the 18-month vacancy in the country’s presidency has impaired Lebanon’s ability to address the security, economic, social and humanitarian challenges. In this regard, the council called on all Lebanese leaders to adhere to the country’s constitution and act to urgently convene a parliamentary session and proceed to the election of a president. On Nov. 12, at least 43 people were killed and 250 others injured in Beirut in a twin bombing claimed by IS, the bloodiest such an attack in years. Just a day before the attacks, the Lebanese parliament postponed presidential elections for the 31st times due to lack of required quorum. A sharp political division between the two main political streams in Lebanon has hindered the elections.

Headline: Islamic State says ‘Schweppes bomb’ used to bring down Russian plane
Islamic State’s official magazine carried a photo on Wednesday of a Schweppes soft drink can it said was used to make an improvised bomb that brought down a Russian airliner over Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula last month, killing all 224 people on board. The photo showed a can of Schweppes Gold soft drink and what appeared to be a detonator and switch on a blue background, three simple components that if genuine are likely to cause concern for airline safety officials worldwide. “The divided Crusaders of the East and West thought themselves safe in their jets as they cowardly bombarded the Muslims of the Caliphate,” the English language Dabiq magazine said in reference to Russia and the West. “And so revenge was exacted upon those who felt safe in the cockpits.” Western governments have said the Airbus A321 operated by Metrojet was likely brought down by a bomb and Moscow confirmed on Tuesday it had reached the same conclusion, but the Egyptian government said it has still not found evidence of criminal action. Explosives experts said it was feasible the device shown in the photo could bring down a plane, depending on where it was located and the density of explosives in the soft drink can. The most vulnerable locations include the fuel line, the cockpit or anywhere close to the fuselage skin.

Syria Headline: Russia fires missiles from Mediterranean on targets in ISIS stronghold Raqqa
The Russian military has launched airstrikes against the Islamic State stronghold of Raqqa in Syria with cruise missiles from the Mediterranean Sea, France’s Le Monde newspaper said, citing a French official. The information that Russia has struck Islamic State positions in Raqqa has been also reported by a senior French government source, cited by Reuters. A US official told Reuters that Moscow has conducted a significant number of strikes in Syria using both sea-launched cruise missiles and long-range bombers. Russia gave notice to Washington ahead of the airstrikes, in accordance with an agreement on air safety, US official said, adding that some of Russian strikes had targeted Raqqa, the stronghold of IS militants. If confirmed, this would be the second time Russia has hit Islamic State positions in Syria from the sea. The first attack was in October this year when Russian warships fired cruise missiles from the Caspian Sea to hit several Islamic State positions in Syria.

Syria Headline: Islamists bomb regime-held neighborhoods in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
The radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) pounded residential buildings in the regime-held districts of Deir ez-Zor city in eastern Syria, with several mortar shells, causing injuries among civilians, local sources reported on Wednesday. Speaking to ARA News in Deir ez-Zor, eyewitnesses said that three shells dropped on the public street in the Jura district, while another shell landed near the Sinaa school. The shelling claimed the life of a civilian and caused the injury of several others. “The injured were transferred to a nearby clinic in the area,” a local source told ARA News on the condition of anonymity. Also on Wednesday, the pro-regime warplanes conducted six airstrikes on ISIS-held neighborhoods in Deir ez-Zor, causing civilian casualties, according to local activists. ARA News could not verify the number of casualties. “Pro-Assad warplanes launched at least six airstrikes on neighborhoods held by Daesh (ISIS) in central Deir ez-Zor,” a media activist and eyewitnesses reported.

Anti-government groups are reporting Syrian government airstrikes on a suburb of the capital Damascus after talks for a two-week truce between the government and rebels collapsed. The Local Coordination Committees and the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights say the airstrikes struck Douma Thursday. The airstrikes came after the Observatory said talks for the truce collapsed between the opposition and representatives of President Bashar Assad’s government after rebels refused to release prisoners. Opposition activist Hadi Abdullah wrote on Twitter: “The Assad regime killed the truce before it was born.” The ceasefire talks came days after a meeting in Vienna involving nearly 20 foreign ministers who set a Jan. 1 deadline to start negotiations aimed at achieving a transitional government.

Syria Headline: Pentagon changes rules of engagement against IS, expanding strike targets
Warplanes of the U.S.-led coalition have pummeled at least 175 targets in the ISIS’s major oil-rich areas in a month, as Washington seeks to disrupt a key revenue source which almost brings the radical group of Islamic State (ISIS) nearly $1 million a day. Earlier this week, 116 oil tanker trucks have been hit by the coalition forces, which is the first time Washington targets ISIS vehicles in the wake of last Friday’s deadly attacks in Paris claimed by the extremist group. The targets, which include key oilfields, were previously not allowed to be attacked by the U.S.-led coalition in a bid to avoid civilian casualties and preserve oil infrastructure that could be needed later by a new Syrian government. The Pentagon said in a statement that the coalition’s strikes have caused “significant damage” to ISIS’s ability to fund itself. The strikes have been focused on oil facilities near Deir ez-Zor and al-Bukamal, which provide nearly two-thirds of the group’s oil revenue. Speaking to ARA News, Syrian journalist Muwafaq Ahmed said: “If the West continued arming moderate rebels alongside covering their backs in the battlefields, this would definitely enable them control these facilities as well as deprive the extremist group of its financial resources.”

Headline: Turkey announces ‘plans’ for joint US operation against IS
Turkey’s foreign minister on Wednesday said Ankara “has plans” for a joint operation with the United States to end the presence of Islamic State militants along any part of its border with Syria. Foreign Minister Feridun Sinirlioglu told the state-run news agency Anatolia that IS militants still had a presence along some of Turkey’s border with northern Syria. “We have certain plans to put an end to the control that IS is still exercising on a zone of our frontier,” he said. “These are plans for a joint operation with the United States.” “When these plans are completed, our operations will continue with more and more intensity. You will see this in the days to come.” US Secretary of State John Kerry said in an interview with CNN late Tuesday that “we are entering an operation with the Turks” to shut off 98 kilometres (61 miles) of border still not secure from IS. Their comments come amid growing momentum for coordinated international action against IS after the Paris attacks last week claimed by the extremist Islamist group which killed 129 and injured 350.

Tehran has agreed Moscow’s proposal to set up a joint bank to finance economic projects, said Mehdi Mohtashemi, a deputy co-chair of the Russian-Iranian intergovernmental commission. “This could happen soon. It depends on technical details and the ways they could be resolved,” he told RIA Novosti on Wednesday. The initial capital for the Russian-Iranian bank would be $500 million and could increase when cooperation in trade and joint projects grows, according to Mohtashemi. He said the bank’s founding is incredibly important for Tehran since Iranian banks are currently under international sanctions. Those sanctions are the main obstacle in the way of establishing the joint bank, Mohtashemi explained. “As soon as the sanctions are lifted, practical work on the bank’s creation would start, maybe in two months after that happens,” he added. During a two-day visit to Tehran in October, Russian Energy Minister Aleksandr Novak announced that the two countries were considering the bank project. He said the final goal would be to boost trade between Russia and Iran from $2 billion to $10 billion.

Headline: Afghan Taliban Claims Five-Man Suicide Raid on Security Base in Kandahar
Afghan officials and insurgent sources say the Taliban has captured a remote district in the northeastern province of Badakhshan.
This is the second time during this year’s fighting that insurgents have overrun the embattled Yamgan district.
A spokesman for the provincial police told local media Thursday that Afghan security forces have staged a “tactical” retreat and taken positions in surrounding villages, awaiting reinforcements for a counteroffensive to retake the area. Afghan media, however, quote defense ministry officials as saying bad weather hampered attempts to urgently airlift reinforcements to the conflict zone. A Taliban spokesman says the fighting for control of Yamgan left 14 Afghan security forces and six insurgent fighters dead. Despite the onset of a harsh winter, the Taliban has not halted its attacks and reportedly has engaged Afghan security forces in fighting in more than a dozen provinces.

Headline: China, Norway Condemn Hostage Killings By Islamic State
China on Thursday joined Norway in condemning the killing of their citizens who had been held hostage by the Islamic State militant group. Chinese President Xi Jinping said “terrorism is the common enemy of human beings,” and that his country opposes it in all its forms. The government vowed to bring those responsible to justice. Islamic State militants used their online English-language magazine, Dabiq, to claim killing 50-year-old Chinese national Fan Jinghui and 48-year-old Norwegian Ole-Johan Grimsgaard-Ofstad. It showed photos of two bodies, and a caption said the two were “executed after being abandoned by the kafir [infidel] nations and organizations.” Norway’s Prime Minister Erna Solberg said Wednesday the killing was a “barbaric act.” “There is no excuse for the treatment our countryman has been exposed to, neither in religion or ideology,” she said. “This is a cold-blooded murder.”

The Islamic State group is aggressively pursuing development of chemical weapons, setting up a branch dedicated to research and experiments with the help of scientists from Iraq, Syria and elsewhere in the region, according to Iraqi and U.S. intelligence officials. Their quest raises an alarming scenario for the West, given the determination to strike major cities that the group showed with its bloody attack last week in Paris. U.S. intelligence officials don’t believe IS has the capability to develop sophisticated weapons like nerve gas that are most suited for a terrorist attack on a civilian target. So far the group has used mustard gas on the battlefield in Iraq and Syria. Still, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls on Thursday warned that Islamic extremists might at some point use chemical or biological weapons. “Terrorism hit France not because of what it is doing in Iraq and Syria … but for what it is,” Valls told the lower house of Parliament. “We know that there could also be a risk of chemical or biological weapons,” he added, though he did not talk of a specific threat. Iraqi officials expressed concern that the large safe haven the extremists control since overrunning parts of Iraq and Syria last year has left Iraqi authorities largely in the dark over the IS program. “They now have complete freedom to select locations for their labs and production sites and have a wide range of experts, both civilians and military, to aid them,” a senior Iraqi intelligence official told The Associated Press. The official, like others from the Iraqi and U.S. intelligence agencies who have first-hand knowledge of the IS chemical weapons program, spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the sensitive information.

Debate raged on for hours over the bill, which ultimately passed with votes from all but three Republican representatives, and 48 Democrats. The bill, if signed into law, would introduce new checks on refugee admission into the United States. Under current policy, defined mostly by the Refugee Act of 1980, the State Department has broad discretion to determine refugee admission and resettlement, in consultation with the FBI. Congressional Republicans want the FBI, the Director of National Intelligence and the Department of Homeland Security to play a greater role; the law would require all three entities to approve each individual refugee admitted to the United States after conducting background checks.

Headline: Police and Protesters Clash in Minneapolis Over Fatal Shooting of Black Man
The fatal shooting of an unarmed black man by a Minneapolis officer led to a tense standoff between the police and protesters Wednesday night. The police used chemical irritants after they said protesters had thrown bricks and bottles, as clashes over the shooting death of Jamar Clark intensified. Mr. Clark, 24, was shot in the head early Sunday and died at a hospital the next day. Protests started within hours as some neighbors said that Mr. Clark had been handcuffed when he was shot, which contradicted statements by the Minneapolis police. Demonstrators pitched tents outside a police station near the shooting scene, and on Monday night dozens were arrested after marching onto an Interstate and blocking traffic. Tensions escalated Wednesday afternoon when officers moved in to clear the protesters’ campsite at the police station, infuriating activists who had pledged to stay until specific demands had been met, including the release of video evidence. The police maneuver set off hours of confrontation between officers and demonstrators, documented by both sides on Twitter, that grew more tense as a cold, rainy day turned into night. Headline: Boko Haram suicide bombing kills 49 in Nigeria’s Yola
At least 34 people were killed and another 80 wounded in Yola, a town packed with refugees from Nigeria’s Islamic uprising, emergency officials said. Later, two more suicide bombers killed at least 15 people in the northern city of Kano and injured 53, according to police. The blasts were the latest by Boko Haram, Nigeria’s homegrown extremists whose 6-year insurgency has killed 20,000 and forced 2.3 million to flee their homes. The latest explosions came as President Muhammadu Buhari pressed his campaign against Nigeria’s endemic corruption, blamed for hampering the fight against the insurgents. Mr Buhari accused his predecessor’s national security adviser of stealing billions of dollars meant to buy weapons to fight Boko Haram, when soldiers had just a few bullets and the Islamic extremists were rampaging across northeast Nigeria. Critics long have blamed corruption for the military’s failures, asking how the insurgents can be better armed than Nigerian soldiers despite an annual defence budget of more than $5 billion, supplemented last year by a loan of $1 billion. Headline: Terrorist shoots two Serbian soldiers, detonates explosive belt in Sarajevo
A suicide bomber with an automatic rifle shot and killed two Serbian soldiers and then opened fire on a bus, wounding several passengers, as he fled the scene in Sarajevo, Bosnia on Wednesday night. Police located the terrorist in his apartment and were preparing to break in when the man killed himself by detonating the explosive belt he was wearing. Government sources in Sarajevo said the bomber, a Sunni Muslim, had recently adopted Salafism.

Headline: Philippine police, protesters clash outside APEC summit
Riot police fired water cannons at hundreds of protesters in the Philippine capital Thursday in clashes close to a summit of Asia-Pacific leaders that included US President Barack Obama.
With clenched fists in the air, the protesters chanted “Junk APEC,” referring to the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation group of 21 economies whose leaders were meeting in Manila.
Police carrying wooden truncheons and shields fired water cannons at the protesters when they tried to break through barricades preventing anyone reaching the summit venue, about one kilometer away. The clashes occurred as Philippine President Benigno Aquino was welcoming Obama, Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders for the start of the summit’s second and final day.
The protesters said they opposed APEC’s free-trade agenda because it favored big corporations and neglected the poor. One police officer estimated the crowd at about 2,000 although there were no official numbers given. There were no immediate reports of arrests or injuries. More than 20,000 police and soldiers were deployed this week to ensure security during the APEC summit.

Yemeni pro-government forces advancing into the strategic province of Taez were battling rebels on the outskirts of its second largest town Thursday, military sources said. The town lies on the main road from government-held territory towards Taez, Yemen’s third largest city, 40 kilometers (25 miles) further north, where loyalist troops have been besieged by the rebels for months. Loyalist forces were backed by significant reinforcements from a Saudi-led coalition which intervened in support of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi in March. Hadi returned from Saudi exile Tuesday as the offensive against the Houthi Shiite rebels and their allies got under way. The coalition carried out at least 10 air strikes against rebel positions in and around Rahida during the night, the military sources said. At the end of his speech, he says, “it’s horrible.” Then words flash on the screen, saying, “And what’s coming next will be far worse and more bitter.” The video also includes statements from several jihadis, praising “soldiers of the caliphate in France” for their “blessed operation.” “We are aware of the newly released ISIS video that mentions Times Square,” NYPD spokesman J. More than 70 people have been killed as incessant rains continue to batter the southern Indian city of Chennai, media reports say. Most of the main streets are waterlogged, bringing the city to a standstill. Many offices, schools and colleges have been shut due to rains in the past week. The rains have also affected at least 80,000 people in northern parts of neighbouring Sri Lanka. A depression formed in the Bay of Bengal has triggered rains in coastal areas of India’s Tamil Nadu state and Sri Lanka. Government officials said around 10,000 people had been evacuated from their homes in Chennai, the Reuters news agency said. The National Disaster Response Force and the army are also helping in ongoing rescue work.

Typhoon In-fa is forecast to roar past the American territory of Guam on Saturday, according to the Joint Typhoon Warning Center. As of Thursday morning U.S. time, In-fa had winds of 74 mph and was located about 200 miles southeast of Anderson Air Force Base on Guam. On Saturday, the storm should pass to the south of Guam. By that time, it could be as strong as a Category 2 or 3 hurricane with winds over 100 mph, according to AccuWeather. In-fa will pass far enough south of Guam that the island will be spared the worst impacts. However, tropical storm conditions are expected with wind gusts over 40 mph and downpours capable of producing flash flooding, AccuWeather said.

Gov. Jay Inslee declared a state of emergency Wednesday in Washington state after days of rain and a powerful storm Tuesday killed three people, cut power to more than 350,000 residents and flooded rivers. The winds on Tuesday exceeded 100 mph in some areas of the Inland Northwest, where fallen trees were blamed for the deaths. A 54-year-old identified as Lea Anne Scott was killed when a tree fell in Spokane. A man in his mid-20s died when a tree crushed his car as he was driving in Snohomish County, authorities said. His identity was not yet available. The third victim, identified by authorities as Carolyn M. Wilford, 70, died of head injuries after a tree landed on her car on Highway 904 about 15 miles southwest of Spokane. Inslee’s emergency proclamation covers all Washington counties, clearing the way for state officials to ramp up aid to those with storm damage. Crews in Spokane were working to clear at least 175 fallen trees Wednesday that blocked streets and slowed the morning commute. Officials were still asking people to stay home and off roadways Wednesday night if possible.

While the civilized world mourns for Paris and prepares to take the fight to ISIS, the official Palestinian Authority media is making the preposterous claim that Israel was behind Friday’s attacks that killed 129 people in the French capital. In opinion columns and editorial cartoons, Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, the official news organ of the West Bank government’s latest cockamamie conspiracy is that Israel’s secret service plotted the horrific attacks. Never mind that ISIS has claimed credit for the six coordinated bombings and mass shootings that also injured hundreds. “It is clear that it’s ‘Mossad’ will burn Beirut and Paris in order to achieve [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu’s goals,” wrote the editors, who answer to President Mahmoud Abbas. The ridiculous claim was followed by a spate of cartoons on the official Facebook page of the Palestinian leadership, including one that showed Netanyahu plotting the attack with a terrorist. A statement released by the terror group said that so far the campaign has been “successful,” MEMRI reported. Are you a small-time donor? Then you can participate in the jihad for the token sum of only $900, and donate a Katyusha rocket. For $4,000, you can provide a Grad missile to the jihad – one with a range of 20 kilometers – and with a bigger investment ($10,000) your Grad missile can reach as far as 40 kilometers! A sniper rifle can be donated for $6,000; a PK machine gun for $5,500. Maybe you are a big-time donor: in that case, donate an entire arsenal. The sky is the limit. Russia has conducted air raids near Lebanon’s border for the first time since Moscow began its military intervention on behalf of the Bashar al-Assad regime. Lebanon’s state National News Agency reported Sunday evening that Russian bombed the targets in the mountains around Syria’s Qara and the remote region separating them from Lebanon’s northeastern border town of Al-Qaa. “Strong blasts echoed throughout the northern Beqaa,” the report said after residents along Lebanon’s northern border with Syria saw Russian helicopters flying overhead. The pro-Hezbollah Al-Akhbar newspaper also reported on the strikes, saying that the Russian raids in came in support of Hezbollah military operations. “The Russian air force has operated in an area of operations that is ‘purely’ Hezbollah’s, as the Syrian army only supports it [there] with artillery and the air force,” the Lebanese daily said. The strikes came after residents of Lebanon’s northern border region of Wadi Khaled saw Russian helicopters fly over their towns at approximately 3:30 p.m., according to the NNA.

Headline: Washington to provide Riyadh with thousands of smart bombs
The US plans to sell $1.29 billion worth of precision-guided munitions to Saudi Arabia to replenish inventories depleted by Riyadh’s airstrikes against ISIS in Syria and Houthi insurgents in Yemen, officials said Monday. The sale is said to include over 13,000 smart bombs, including Joint Direct Attack Munitions and Paveway laser-guided bombs, and spare parts for upgrading older bombs into precision munitions. Saudi Arabia is one of the main buyers of US weaponry. The Pentagon’s Defense Security Cooperation Agency informed the Congress on Friday that it had approved the sale, and lawmakers now have 30 days to decide whether the deal can go forward.

A senior Palestinian official on Monday said the Palestinian Authority has reached an agreement with Egypt to reopen the Gaza Strip’s main border crossing in an arrangement meant to bypass the territory’s Hamas rulers. Azzam al-Ahmad, an aide to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said the deal was reached recently in Cairo. He said it aims to open the Rafah crossing “to the maximum possible” to allow the movement of students, laborers, medical patients and even commercial goods. Egypt has kept the Rafah crossing virtually sealed since the 2013 military overthrow of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, who was a close ally of Hamas. Due to the closure, thousands of Gazans are waiting to travel abroad. Azzam said the deal would be implemented in stages beginning in the near future, but he gave no further details. With his announcement, Azzam appeared to be trying to put pressure on Hamas to accept the deal. If Hamas doesn’t agree, he said, “Hamas will have to answer to the Gazan people.” Ghazi Hamad, a senior Hamas official in Gaza, said the group has not been officially informed of the deal, but indicated it would oppose it. “Any arrangement in Rafah cannot be done without proper coordination,” he said.

Al-Raqqah, a city in Syria on the north bank of the Euphrates River, about 100 miles east of Aleppo, which has become the de facto capital of the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, is being pounded heavily by the French Air Force in retaliation for Friday’s bombing attacks in Paris. Initial, unconfirmed reports from Arab social media sources count at least 30 consecutive airstrikes. One social media source said Sunday night: “Raqqa is getting pummeled again tonight. One cannot help but suspect that the Armée de l’air has taken the gloves off…” Earlier on Sunday, the Associated Press reported that senior Iraqi intelligence officials had warned of imminent ISIS assaults, one day before the deadly attacks that killed 130 people. The Iraqi intelligence dispatch said ISIS’ leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, had ordered an attack on coalition countries conducting military operations in Iraq and Syria, including Iran and Russia, through bombings and other attacks in the coming days.same Iraqi officials were able to inform the coalition members that the Paris attacks had been planned in Al-Raqqah, Syria, where the attackers received training for that specific attack, before being sent to France. It is speculated that 24 people were involved in the Paris attacks, including 19 attackers and 5 organizers. According to Conflict News, the areas being struck in Raqqa have been a local stadium, a museum, clinics and hospitals, Political buildings, and a forest area. The same source also claims the US supplied the French Air Force with the necessary intelligence to conduct the raids.

Iraq Headline: Bomb attacks rock Baghdad as Iraqi forces battle IS militants near Ramadi
At least seven people were killed and 15 injured in a series of bomb attacks across Baghdad on Sunday, while clashes between the Islamic State and Iraqi security forces continued in Anbar province. Two people were killed and seven injured when a bomb exploded near shops in the Allawi area in central Baghdad, a source with Iraq’s interior ministry told IraqiNews.com. Another explosion in central Baghdad’s al-Kifah Street killed one person and injured eight others, the ministry said. A roadside bomb, also known as an “improvised explosive device,” detonated in the Arab Jabour area south of the capital, police told IraqiNews.com, killing two soldiers and injuring another two as a patrol passed by. Police also told IraqiNews.com a bomb placed underneath a vehicle in the al-Mahmoudiyah district of southern Baghdad killed two men in a passing car. Kurdish Headline: Kurdish-Arab alliance captures nearly 200 villages from ISIS
An alliance of Kurdish and Arab forces fighting the Islamic State group (ISIS or IS) in northeast Syria has driven the jihadists out of nearly 200 villages, its spokesman told reporters on Monday. Syrian Democratic Forces spokesman Talal Ali Sello said at a press conference that “between October 30 and November 13, an area of 1,362 square kilometres (545 square miles) was cleansed of IS.” That area included 196 towns and villages, among them Al-Hol which lies along a strategic ISIS supply route and where Sello made his comments. He said these “victories” had been achieved with air support from a US-led coalition striking ISIS targets in Syria over the past year. The offensive south of the city of Hasakeh, where control is divided between Syria’s regime and Kurdish militia, saw the alliance take several villages before seizing Al-Hol on Thursday. According to Sello, 493 ISIS terrorists, 33 SDF fighters and four civilians were killed in the two weeks of fighting. Another 53 SDF fighters were wounded.

The widening insurgency has escalated since foreign forces ended most combat operations last year. But there was no immediate confirmation from NATO’s Resolute Support mission in Kabul of an attack on any of its vehicles. “A convoy of three foreign forces vehicles was coming to the city from Marjah when targeted by a suicide bomber driving a car,” said Omar Zawak, a spokesman for the Helmand governor’s office, citing information from local police.

Two US states say they will block or suspend a program to resettle Syrian migrants within their borders, citing major security concerns after Friday’s wave of Islamic State (ISIS) terror attacks in Paris that left at least 129 murdered. Significantly, at least one of the terrorists behind the six coordinated attacks apparently entered Europe via Greece as a Syrian “refugee.” “After full consideration of this weekend’s attacks of terror on innocent citizens in Paris, I will oppose any attempt to relocate Syrian refugees to Alabama,” said Robert Bentley, governor of the southern US state. “As your governor, I will not stand complicit to a policy that places the citizens of Alabama in harm’s way,” Bentley said in a statement on Sunday. “The acts of terror committed over the weekend are a tragic reminder to the world that evil exists and takes the form of terrorists who seek to destroy the basic freedoms we will always fight to preserve,” the governor added. “I will not place Alabamians at even the slightest possible risk of an attack on our people.” The governor of the midwestern US state of Michigan said on Sunday that he had decided to suspend arrivals of Syrian refugees under a program announced by US President Barack Obama. “Given the terrible situation in Paris, I’ve directed that we put on hold our efforts to accept new refugees until the US Department of Homeland Security completes a full review of security clearances and procedures,” Governor Rick Snyder said in a statement quoted in some US media on Sunday.

Hundreds of Belgian police raided a Brussels neighborhood Monday morning in search of Islamic State (ISIS) terrorists and arrested the “eighth” man involved in the attacks but who did not blow himself up. He was identified as Saleh Abdeslam. The mastermind behind the gruesome killings of at least 132 people is Abdelhamid Abaaoud, 26, who is in Syria. He also is suspected of being behind plots to attack a high-speed train and a Paris church. France has discovered that ISIS is entrenched in the country far more than ever could be imagined. Security officials discovered a rocket launcher Monday night in Lyons, France while searching for 19-year-old terrorist Salah Abdeslam, who was born in Belgium and is a French national. He reportedly was stopped during or after Friday night’s attacks but was released. France said it is considering a ground offensive against ISIS as hundreds of police carried out 168 raids overnight and took 104 people into custody, including relatives of some of the suicide terrorists. The French and Belgian reaction to what has been described here as “France’s 9/11” is fierce and is leaving President Barack Obama on the defense against Republican critics who are afraid that lack of a more vigorous offense is leaving the United States next in line.

Others were protesting against the imposition of state-approved history schoolbooks, which they say whitewash South Korea’s past dictatorships. Many marchers chanted “Park Geun-hye, step down”. Security forces fired tear gas when some of them tried to break through police barricades as they moved towards the presidency.

Ethnic rebels and residents in northern Myanmar say government troops attacked Kachin rebel targets on Monday. La Nan, the Kachin Independence Organization (KIO) spokesman told VOA Burmese the offensive began Saturday and escalated as government troops used artillery and airstrikes outside the town of Mohnyin in Kachin State. “The assault escalated yesterday (Sunday) after they started invading our smaller bases on November 14, and today they used airstrikes, apparently launching a major offensive. But we have no communication or talks on the matter so far,” La Nan said. Witnesses also said that fighter jets and helicopters were being used in the bombardment near the town. One local resident, who did not want to be named, told VOA, “We can see aircrafts flying in the sky and the whole Mohnyin town can see it clearly. We saw bombarding, but couldn’t see the explosions as they were dropped behind mountains.”

China on Saturday welcomed backing from IMF experts that the yuan should be included in its reserve currencies, saying the move would strengthen the world’s financial system. Now the world’s second-largest economy, China asked last year for the yuan to be added to the elite basket of SDR currencies, but until recently it was considered too tightly controlled to qualify. It now looks likely the yuan will be formally admitted to the IMF’s “special drawing rights” currency basket at the end of the month, which would mark a milestone in China’s efforts to become a global economic power. IMF chief Christine Lagarde said the fund now deemed the yuan “meets the requirements to be a ‘freely usable’ currency” — a key hurdle to joining the yen, dollar, pound and euro as a leading unit in international trade. The yuan hit headlines in August when China’s central bank devalued the currency and said it would use a more market-oriented system to calculate the point around which the currency can trade each day. The move sent markets into a tailspin as investors took it as a sign of slowing growth in China, a key driver of the world economy, but the central bank on Saturday said such reforms had taken it closer to joining the SDR basket.

Economic data released Monday indicated Japan’s economy had contracted at an annualized 0.8 percent between July and September, yielding the two consecutive quarters required to mark an official recession in the world’s third-largest economy. The dwindling economy, however, has not affected the stock market’s performance. Bloomberg reported the Nikkei 225 stock average rose 12 percent through last week, as corporate profits have benefited from the weakening of the Japanese yen against the dollar. Japan is entering its first technical recession in five years, and following the announcement Tokyo’s Economics Minister Akira Amari said a scarcity of workers in public projects have hampered growth. The shortage is due to a lack of skilled labor, The Guardian reported.

Headline: Damage reported after tornado strikes Central California town
Authorities said a tornado struck a Central California town, causing damage to some structures and knocking down trees and power lines. The National Weather Service said video and witness reports confirm a tornado touched down in Denair, about 13 miles southeast of Modesto, on Sunday afternoon. Witnesses posted photos online of a funnel cloud looming over city streets. The Modesto Bee reports the twister swept along nearly a mile of Zeering Road, toppling trees and fences, breaking windows and ripping off part of a church roof. The tornado came as another cold storm sweeps across California. Hail and thunderstorms were reported in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Forecasters said up to 8 inches of snow could fall at the 5000 feet level, with possibly a foot at the highest peaks.

Headline: Israeli Army Sends Reinforcements After Attack Kills Two South of Hebron
An Israeli man and his son were killed in a shooting attack south of Hebron in the West Bank on Friday afternoon. The two, aged 40 and 18, were driving with five other family members to a family event in the southern town Meitar. At around 3 P.M. a shooter ambushed their vehicle near the settlement of Othniel in the southern Hebron hills area. Two other passengers, a woman and a 16-year-old male, were lightly and moderately wounded, and were rushed to to Soroka Medical Center, Be’er Sheva. The shooter is believed to have been waiting on the side of the road for an Israeli vehicle to drive by, and fled by car after the shooting. A preliminary investigation found that 14 bullets were fired at the family car. Large army forces were combing the area in search for the shooter, with the search noe focusing on the Palestinian towns of Yatta and Dhahiriya. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon decided to deploy additional forces in the area following a meeting with IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Gadi Eisenkot, Shin Bet chief Yoram Cohen, Military Intelligence head Maj. Gen. Herzi Levi and Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories Maj. Gen. Poli Mordechai. Soldiers from the infantry Golani Brigade training base will be deployed there on Saturday, joining the seven IDF battalions already operating in the Hebron areaIslamist militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad praised the attack as a “natural response to crimes conducted by the Israeli occupation.”

Headline: Jordanian officials arrive to set stage for Temple Mount cameras
A Jordanian delegation arrived in Jerusalem from Amman on Thursday in order to run preliminary tests for installing cameras on the Temple Mount compound. The officials from the Ministry of Religious Endowments were to inspect the technical and engineering aspects of putting the CCTV equipment on the site, deemed holy to Jews and Muslims alike, and discuss with the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf locations for placing cameras. Israel and Jordan agreed last month to install cameras on the Temple Mount to monitor activities by Jewish and Muslim visitors to the holy site in a bid to calm tensions that have helped drive the recent escalation in Palestinian attacks on Israeli civilians and soldiers. Speaking to the Jordanian press, Religious Affairs Minister Hayel Dahoud emphasized that the cameras wouldn’t be installed within Al-Aqsa Mosque or the Dome of the Rock themselves. He reiterated a statement made earlier this month by Jordan’s King Abdullah II, who allayed Palestinian concerns saying, “To be very clear, there will be no cameras inside the mosque.” The control center for the cameras on the Temple Mount is to be controlled from Amman, but the footage would be broadcast on the Internet around the clock. According to the minister, the project would be entirely under his authority’s command and is primarily concerned with protecting Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third-holiest site in Islam.

At least 43 people were killed and more than 240 wounded on Thursday in two suicide bomb blasts claimed by Islamic State in a crowded residential district in Beirut’s southern suburbs, a stronghold of the Shi’ite Muslim group Hezbollah. The explosions were the first attacks in more than a year to target a Hezbollah stronghold inside Lebanon, and came at time when the group is stepping up its involvement in the Syrian civil war — a fight which has brought Sunni Islamist threats and invective against the Iran-backed Shi’ite group. The blasts occurred almost simultaneously late on Thursday and struck a Shi’ite community center and a nearby bakery in the commercial and residential area of Borj al-Barajneh, security sources said. A closely guarded Hezbollah-run hospital is also nearby. Health Minister Wael Abu Faour said 43 people were killed and 240 people were wounded. Islamic State said in a statement posted online by its supporters that its members blew up a bike loaded with explosives in Borj al-Barajneh and that when onlookers gathered, a suicide bomber blew himself up among them. The group said the attacks killed 40 people.

Syria Headline: Report: Russia deploys missiles in Syria that could take down jets as far away as TA
Russian President Vladimir Putin stationed an air-defense missile system in Syria that is capable of striking aircraft as far away as Tel Aviv, according to a report published on Friday.
The S-400 air-defense system has been deployed at the Latakia airbase on the Syrian coast, according to the British Daily Mail newspaper. The Russian-developed advanced missile system is an upgrade of the S-300 anti-aircraft system, which according to reports Moscow has recently agreed to sell to Tehran. The S-400 missiles can reach a range of 400 km. and strike aircraft at 90,000 feet. From Latakia, the missiles could reach much of Israel, as well as the eastern Mediterranean, Cyprus and southern Turkey. Russian involvement in the Syrian civil war has stepped up in recent weeks, with Moscow leading air strikes in Syria to support the regime of ally President Bashar Assad.

A recently formed U.S.-backed Syrian rebel alliance captured on Friday the town of al-Houl in Hasaka province that was held by Islamic State of Iraq and Syria fighters, a spokesman for the Kurdish fighters, part of the grouping, said. Redur Xelil, who is in the town, told Reuters that ISIS have fled the town which is close to Iraqi border. Seperately, Syrian government forces captured the village of Tel Hadya in the northern province of Aleppo on Friday, a monitoring group and state media said, in the latest territorial gains reported against insurgents in the area. The advance came a day after the Syrian army backed by Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, Iranian troops and Russia air raids took the nearby town of Al Hader, effectively bringing government forces in control of most of the southern Aleppo countryside.

Kurdish Headline: Barzani Inside Sinjar Declares Victory
Kurdish forces say they are making progress in a major offensive they have launched against Islamic State (IS) militants in Sinjar in northern Iraq. Peshmerga fighters have reportedly taken a strategically important main road near the town that helps connect the IS strongholds of Mosul and Raqqa. The offensive is supported by US-led coalition air strikes. When it captured Sinjar last year, IS killed or enslaved thousands of members of the Yazidi religious minority. Tens of thousands of others became trapped on nearby Mount Sinjar without food or water for days until they were rescued by Syrian Kurdish forces. The risk of genocide was a key factor in the US decision to launch air strikes in Iraq. Coalition warplanes bombed IS positions, command-and-control facilities and weapons stores in the Sinjar area overnight before some 7,500 Peshmerga fighters launched a ground assault around dawn on Thursday, closing in on three fronts. Within hours, they had successfully blocked Highway 47, the main road between Mosul, to the east, and Raqqa to the west, and secured three surrounding villages. A Peshmerga source later told the BBC’s Ahmed Maher that they had managed to seize a key checkpoint on the road at Umm al-Shababit, 26km (15 miles) west of Sinjar, and asserted their control over three hills to the north-west. The Peshmerga are also laying siege to the 80% of the town of Sinjar that they failed to retake in an offensive in December, when IS was driven from Mount Sinjar.

Turkish security forces killed 11 Kurdish militants in clashes near the borders with Syria and Iraq, while one soldier was killed in a firefight elsewhere in southeast Turkey, state authorities said on Friday. The PKK fighters were killed in an operation by Turkish forces in the Cizre and Silopi districts of Sirnak province on Thursday, the provincial governor’s office said in a statement. Further north in Van province, security forces launched a dawn operation on Friday after a tip-off that PKK members were holed up in a house in the Ercis district, the armed forces said on their website. It said one soldier was killed and three wounded in the resulting clash, which was ongoing. President Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to fight the PKK until all of its militants are “liquidated”.

Headline: Iran threatens to end nuclear deal
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani threatened on Thursday to abandon the nuclear deal, if the US imposes any new sanctions unrelated to Tehran’s nuclear program. “The obligations are the following: the group of six will not impose new sanctions, and we should fulfill the agreements. In case the Unites States or other countries fail to comply with their obligations, we will be forced to do the same,” Rouhani told the Italian Corriere della Sera paper according to the semi-official Fars News Agency. Rouhani went on to say Iran is in dispute with the US, given Tehran’s demands that all sanctions against it be lifted as part of the nuclear deal. The US maintains that the nuclear deal only has nuclear sanctions lifted but not others – such as those over Iran’s rampant human rights abuses, its ballistic missile program and active support of terror as the leading state sponsor of terror. The ultimatum comes just days after it was revealed Tuesday that Iran has stopped dismantling its centrifuges at the Natanz and Fordow uranium enrichment plants, breaching the nuclear deal that calls for the dismantling. It also recently bought a plane to deploy troops in Syria in violation of sanctions still in place in the nuclear deal.

Headline: Islamic State makes new threats to Russia & Europe, promising caliphate, bloodshed
Islamic State has released a five-minute video threatening Russia with attacks in the near future and vowing to bring the Kremlin down. The video is awash with graphic images and clips from previously released execution footage. The clip was released by Islamic State’s (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) foreign language media division, the Al-Hayat Media Center. According to the SITE monitoring group, threats of attacks on Russia are being made in revenge for Russia’s anti-IS ops in Syria. The jihadists claim they will bring down the Kremlin, create a caliphate in different parts of Russia such as Crimea, Caucasus, the Urals and the republic of Tatarstan, also adding that all non-Muslims will have to pay a special tax. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russia’s security agencies will look into the video, which also promises attacks on Europe. “I do not know the authenticity of this video or the authenticity of these sources, but in any case no doubt this will be material for review by our special [security] services,” Peskov told journalists on Thursday.

Chaos swept over college campuses around the nation Thursday, as the ousters of the embattled University of Missouri system’s president and chancellor earlier this week were followed by dozens of other student protests calling for more faculty and staff heads to roll. A popular professor at Missouri said he resigned Wednesday after students lashed out at him for pledging to give a scheduled exam amid spiraling protests, but the university said Thursday it rejected his resignation. The Dean of Students at Claremont McKenna College in California, Mary Spellman, resigned in a letter to the community Thursday, after some at the school called for hunger strikes over what they perceived as a lack of support for students of color. Students at Ithaca College in New York, Yale University and Vanderbilt University in Tennessee were also calling to ax administrators, and even more campuses were pledging solidarity with the burgeoning social justice movement. As many as 20 other campuses around the country were planning marches Thursday, including St. John’s, Syracuse and Columbia universities in New York, Harvard and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Disaffected students at Loyola University in Chicago and the University of Michigan were preparing a list of demands and threatening action, according to The Seattle Times. Headline: France calls state of emergency, closes borders after attacks
At least 18 people have been killed in several shootings in the French capital, Paris, as well as explosions near the Stade de France. French media say at least 15 people have been killed near the Bataclan arts centre. A hostage taking is under way, with reports of up to 60 held. At least one man opened fire at a restaurant in the 11th district, causing several several casualties. Three explosions are also reported outside a bar near the Stade de France. France were hosting Germany in a friendly and the match continued. It has now ended. A BBC journalist at the Petit Cambodge restaurant says he can see 10 people on the road either dead or seriously injured. He says police have now arrived and sealed off the area. An eyewitness told Liberation he had heard more than 100 rounds being fired at a cafe in rue de Charonne. There are reports of up to six gunmen involved. Reports say French President Francois Hollande was watching the match at the Stade de France and has been moved to safety. Mr Hollande and Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve have gone to the interior ministry.

A bomb exploded in southern Thailand killing at least four people and injuring four others at a village checkpoint in Khok Pho district of Pattani, a Muslim-majority province. Police Col. Tanongsak Wanuspha, the Pattani police commander, said rebels who demand independence placed the bomb in position, Al Jazeera reported. “The culprits placed a bomb under a chair at the checkpoint, killing four people. This attack was to disrupt [and] stir unrest,” Tanongsak said. Col. A bomb exploded Friday during midday prayers at a mosque frequented by Houthi supporters in Yemen’s northwestern Mahwit region, killing several worshippers and wounding others, residents said. The blast took place in Shibam, a city about 40 km (25 miles) outside the capital Sanaa which has been an area of relative calm in the conflict-stricken country. At least 5,600 Yemenis have been killed in seven months of war, in which Iran-allied Houthis and forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh have been battling armed supporters of an exiled government backed by a Saudi-led Arab coalition. The Kremlin has confirmed “some secret data” was accidentally leaked when Russian TV stations broadcast material apparently showing blueprints from a nuclear torpedo, designed to be used against enemy coastal installations. During President Vladimir Putin’s meeting with military officials in Sochi, where the development of Russia’s military capabilities were being discussed, a number of TV crews were able to capture footage of a paper that was certainly not meant for public viewing. The presentation slide titled “Ocean Multipurpose System: Status-6” showed some drawings of a new nuclear submarine weapons system. It is apparently designed to bypass NATO radars and any existing missile defense systems, while also causing heavy damage to “important economic facilities” along the enemy’s coastal regions. The footnote to the slide stated that Status-6 is intended to cause “assured unacceptable damage” to an adversary force. Its detonation “in the area of the enemy coast” would result in “extensive zones of radioactive contamination” that would ensure that the region would not be used for “military, economic, business or other activity” for a “long time.” According to the blurred information provided in the slide, the system represents a massive torpedo, designated as “self-propelled underwater vehicle,” with a range of up to 10 thousand kilometers and capable of operating at a depth of up to 1,000 meters.

Greek workers are staging their first general strike against austerity since Alexis Tsipras’s left-wing Syriza government came to power in January. Brief clashes were reported in Athens, as youths broke away from the main protest near parliament. The main unions appealed for members to walk out against the terms of Greece’s third eurozone bailout. The government agreed to push through tax rises and spending cuts in return for €86bn (£60bn) in rescue loans. As protesters gathered in Athens, public services were hit and some transport services ground to a halt. MPs have already voted to raise the retirement age and get rid of most early retirement benefits, and reduced rates of sales tax on some of the big Greek islands have been scrapped. But the main civil servants’ union ADEDY and the GSEE private sector union objected to proposals to scale back supplementary pensions and merge pension funds. They were joined by communist-affiliated union PAME. In Athens, reports said dozens of young people dressed in black threw petrol bombs and broke shop windows near the main parliamentary building in Syntagma Square. Small fires were also seen at the entrance to the Bank of Greece headquarters. Police then responded with tear gas. Metro, ferry and suburban rail services were shut down, schools were closed and hospitals had only emergency staff levels. Buses and trolley buses were providing limited services. Museums and archaeological sites were shut and news bulletins, newspapers and websites were disrupted because journalists had walked out.

This summer’s market mayhem caused Americans to buy gold bars and coins at levels unseen since the financial crisis. When people are scared about the economy and financial markets, they rush to gold. Boy, were they worried in recent months. U.S. demand for gold bars and coins surged 207% during the third quarter, the World Gold Council said on Thursday. The skyrocketing demand signaled a level of interest in gold investment “not seen since the global financial crisis,” the group said. The U.S. Mint backs up that assessment. It said gold Eagle coin sales surged to nearly 400,000 ounces last quarter, the highest level in more than five years. Gold watchers chalk up Americans’ newfound love for gold to two major factors: prices looked relatively cheap and financial markets were in turmoil. In July gold prices fell below $1,100 an ounce for the first time in five years. Apparently many people decided it was too good an opportunity to pass up. “People were bargain shopping. There’s no question about it,” said Bob Alderman, head of global wealth management at Gold Bullion International.

The Southeast Asian nation, where about 90 percent of its 250 million people are Muslim, has long been seen as seen as an example that a large Muslim majority can live in relative peace alongside minority religions, like Christianity and Hinduism. But in October, there was a troubling outburst in violence in the Sharia-law governed region of Aceh. At the urging from Islamic leaders, hundreds of Muslims took to the streets with machetes and torched area churches. “We will not stop hunting Christians and burning churches. Christians are Allah’s enemies,” one Islamic leader said, according to a report by the Gatestone Institute titled, “The Indonesian Jihad on Christian Churches.” Foreign Policy magazine described the Oct. 13 attacks in the Aceh region of the country that sits on the northern end of Sumatra. Mobs carried axes and machetes rode on motorcycles, in pickups and in cars and attacked a church in Suka Makmur. “The group of Muslim hard-liners had apparently had enough of their Christian neighbor’s open display of faith,” the report said. The report said that a total of 8,000 Christians in Aceh were displaced in violent clashes and one person, believed to be a Muslim attacker, died after being shot in the head. Indonesian President Joko Widodo tried to ease tensions at the time and tweeted, “Stop violence in Aceh Singkil. Any act of violence, whatever the reasons behind it, not to mention if it is related to religion and faith, will kill diversity —Jkw.” Aceh is the only province in country to have introduced Sharia law. It was granted autonomy in 2005. The head of the local chapter of the hard-line group Islamic Defenders Front told Reuters he was demanding the closure of 10 more churches because they lacked proper permits.

The Islamic State released a new video threatening to attack Israel, but did not reveal when it would take place. “The video is focused on the war against the Egyptian military. The threat to Israel comes at the end, where he says that they will reach the Jews,” Rafael Green, director of the Jihad and Terrorism Threat Monitor of MEMRI (the Middle East Media Research Institute), told The Jerusalem Post on Wednesday. The speaker expressed the terrorist group’s desire to attack Israel at an unspecified time, he said, quoting the well-known hadith: “Judgment Day will not come until you fight the Jews and kill them. The Jews will hide behind stones and trees, and the stones and trees will call: O Muslim, o servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, come and kill him – except for the gharqad tree, which is the tree of the Jews.” Therefore, this video should be taken seriously, but needs to be put into proportion, said Green. The 14 minute video titled “And Then They Will Be Vanquished,” is a response to the Egyptian army’s recently launched Operation Martyr’s Right, noted the MEMRI report. The speaker is a masked gunman who urges Egyptian soldiers to repent or be killed for attacking jihadis in Sinai. He claimed that the army is trying to push out the local population in order to defend Israel. The speaker warns Israel, saying that the jihadists have not forgotten it in spite of their current focus on the war against the Egyptian government. He vows that his group will resume its attacks on Israel “soon.” He also vows that Islamic State will lead the Islamic nation which will “rise up and uproot you [the Jews].” “He warns them that the mujahideen will penetrate deep into the territory of the ‘tyrants’ hinting at planned operations within Egypt itself, rather than in the Sinai Peninsula,” notes the report. “Indeed, this apostate army has failed to carry out the mission it was tasked with, and was embarrassed in front of the public and in front of its masters,” he declares.
These messages were spoken as footage of civilians allegedly killed by the Egyptian army and blown up tanks and dead Egyptian soldier were shown. The speaker vows that his group will raise its flag over the Cairo Tower, a famous Cairo landmark.

Headline: Syrian media reports Israeli airstrike near Damascus airport
Around two weeks following a reported Israeli strike on a weapons-envoy in Syria, media outlets associated with Syrian President Bashar Assad reported Wednesday night another Israeli airstrike in the country. According to the reports, Israeli aircraft carried out the strike adjacent to the Damascus airport at around 6:00 p.m. Yet it was not clear whether the target of the attack was a weapons shipment, or an alternate target, such as an Iran-backed terror cell operating against Israel. Defense officials declined to comment on the foreign media reports. However, Israel did previously announce a strict-policy of intolerance towards threats to the state, such as weapons transfers between Syria and Lebanon. The last reported Israeli strike in Syria, on October 31, targeted numerous Hezbollah targets in Syria’s south. Syrian media reported that up to a dozen Israeli war planes conducted the mission close to the Lebanon-Syria border in the Qalamoun Mountains region. Estimated targets included a weapons convoy destined for Hezbollah fighters traveling through Syria. The attack Wednesday night would be the second attributed to Israel since Russia began operating in the area.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday that he is not ruling out a unilateral Israeli withdrawal of the West Bank. Responding to questions at the Center for American Progress think tank in Washington, Netanyahu said a negotiated peace deal would be better than unilateral steps by Israel to impose a solution to the conflict. But he indicated a unilateral approach might be possible under the right conditions. “Unilateralism … I suppose that’s possible, too, but it would have to meet Israeli security criteria and that would also require, I think, a broader international understanding than exists now,” he said. However, the prime minister stressed, even if Israel does pull out of the West Bank – whether as a result of an agreement or in a unilateral move – it will have to keep its security presence in the territories. He gave as an example the 2005 Gaza disengagement, as well as Israel’s pullout from southern Lebanon, noting that even though Israel had left “every square inch,” these territories were taken over by Iran proxies – Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon – and turned into launching pads for thousands rockets. “So Israelis ask a simple question, which I ask: If we set up a Palestinian state, how do we make sure that state does not become another Gaza, and is not committed to our destruction?”

Israel informed the European Union on Wednesday that it had canceled a number of consultations scheduled over the coming weeks between the two sides, officials in Jerusalem said. Senior officials in the Foreign Ministry told EU ambassador in Israel Lars Faarborg-Andersen, who was summoned to the ministry to be reprimanded, that the decision was Israel’s response to the EU’s decision Wednesday to adopt guidelines on labeling products made in West Bank settlements, the officials said. The Israeli ambassador to the EU conveyed a similar message to senior EU officials at a meeting in EU headquarters in Brussels. Senior Foreign Ministry officials Alon Ushpiz and Aviv Shir-On, who met the EU ambassador Wednesday, protested the EU’s decision to start labeling products from the settlements and said it was an example for the EU’s double standard in dealing with Israel. The officials told Faarborg-Andersen that Israel would suspend some of the strategic dialogues it was conducting with the organization and would cancel a meeting on human rights and a meeting on international organizations that were slated to take place in the next few weeks.

The gunman was shot dead after killing three foreign police instructors, including the two Americans, as well as two Jordanian translators. The UN employee is the fourth person that is being investigated but has not been charged yet because of the special permission that was needed from UNIFIL. Lebanon and Israel technically remain at war, and more than 100 people in Lebanon have been arrested since 2009 on suspicion of collaborating with the Jewish state.

The Syrian regime backed by Hezbollah has begun to mobilize troops for a major offensive in a triangle of territory stretching from the southern outskirts of Damascus down to Quneitra in the southwest and Daraa in the southeast. Known commonly in Arabic-language media as the “triangle of death,” this stretch of land has been the focus of a number of regime offensives, including a major one in February that was directed by Hezbollah and Iran. The February campaign, however, made little headway amid the heavy winter storms that buffeted the region. Now, weeks after Russia began airstrikes on behalf of the Bashar al-Assad regime, government forces are once again readying an offensive in southern Syria, according to rebel sources. Shi’ite militia group Hashd al-Shaabi has detained hundreds of Sunni residents of Khurmatu in northern Slahaddin province, demanding ransoms for their release. After a car bomb targeted the Shi’ite ceremony on holy day of Ashura last month, Hashd al-Shaabi forces arrested 175 Sunni people in Khurmatu, the head of communications for the Khurmatu administration told BasNews. Mohammed Fayaq said that 140 people have been released while the circumstance of the rest is unknown. BasNews understands that most of the detainees are civilians with no evidence pointing towards their involvement in the car bomb attack. Fayaq revealed that the detainees’ families usually do not inform authorities, even if they are made to pay ransom, because they are concerned about reprisals. The deputy commander of the Russian Air Force, Lieutenant-General Pavel Kurachenko, said in September that the Armenian and Russian governments are preparing to sign the agreement. “We have already gone far,” he said, expressing hope that the two sides will work out all remaining details by the end of this year. Once China began to mark an exceptionally difficult transition from a smokestack economy to a consumption and services-led model, those who were aware of how the country had gone about funding years of torrid growth knew what was likely coming next. Years of borrowing to fund rapid growth had left the country with a sprawling shadow banking complex and a massive debt problem and once commodity prices collapsed – which, in a bit of cruel irony, was partially attributable to China’s slowdown – some began to suspect that regardless of how hard Beijing tried to keep up the charade, a raft of defaults was inevitable. President Barack Obama plans to press Israel to take unilateral measures to make possible a Palestinian state. “We’ve been doing a lot of work internally to try to think about, if we are in a period without negotiations, how we can still generate some direction and progress . . . on the ground to reinforce that pathway toward a two-state solution even if negotiations will have to wait for some later period,” U.S. ambassador to Israel, Daniel Shapiro said. In a conference call on Dec. 6, Shapiro and senior administration officials outlined the agenda of the Nov. 9 meeting between Obama and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to a report by Middle East Newsline. Aides said Obama wants Israel to take measures on such issues as withdrawal from the West Bank, Palestinian control over Jerusalem and a Jewish housing freeze that could prepare for an eventual Palestinian state. The aides said the president has discounted the prospect of renewed negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in 2016. The White House officials said Obama would instead press Netanyahu to take measures that would preserve the option of a formal Israeli-PA agreement on a Palestinian state. “There will not be a comprehensive final status agreement in the remainder of his [Obama’s] term, and there likely may not even be meaningful negotiations between the two sides,” National Security Council coordinator for the Middle East, Robert Malley, said. “Given that reality, which is a new one, how does the prime minister himself see Israel going forward, given its own interests in stabilizing the situation in preventing the emergence of a one-state solution.”

The meeting at the White House came weeks after the administration and other partner nations began moving forward with the Iran deal, despite unsuccessful appeals by Netanyahu to the U.S. Congress to stop it. Adding to that tension is a separate controversy over Netanyahu’s appointment of a new spokesman who has spoken derisively about Obama. Ran Baratz, a conservative commentator, has suggested in Facebook posts that Obama is anti-Semitic and Secretary of State John Kerry cannot be taken seriously. Over the weekend, Vice President Biden condemned the remarks during an address to a Jewish group in Florida. “There is no excuse, there should be no tolerance for any member or employee of the Israeli administration referring to the president of United States in derogatory terms,” Biden said, while adding that nobody can undermine the U.S.-Israel relationship. Arab foreign ministers searched on Monday for ways to halt what one called Israel’s “dangerous escalation” of violence against Palestinians. Weeks of knife, gun and car assaults by Palestinians in Israel and the West Bank have left 74 Palestinians dead, around half of them alleged attackers. Ten Israelis and one Arab Israeli have also been killed, and violence has spread to the Gaza Strip as well. Attacks against Jews began in early October as tensions over the flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound in Jerusalem erupted. The compound is the third holiest site in Islam, as well as being the holiest site in Judaism which venerates it as the Temple Mount. “This emergency meeting comes with the dangerous escalation by the Israeli government, the settlers, the Jewish extremist groups, and the Israeli forces in the blessed city of Jerusalem,” United Arab Emirates Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed al-Nahyan told the meeting, the official Saudi Press Agency reported. He chaired the gathering of the 22-member bloc, and said the Palestinian issue is key to peace and security in the region. “We gather today to take a decision about what we can do to stop these crimes and violations,” the UAE minister said.

The Israeli Air Force (IAF) on Sunday night launched an airstrike against a terrorist infrastructure belonging to Hamas in southern Gaza, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said. The airstrike was in retaliation for a rocket attack on southern Israel on Sunday evening. “The IDF holds the Hamas terrorist organization solely responsible for Gaza and will continue to act to maintain quiet in southern towns,” the IDF statement said. Sunday evening’s rocket attack targeted the Sha’ar Hanegev region next to Gaza. The rocket exploded in an open area, and did not cause any physical injuries or damage.

President Barack Obama said the US was taking the attack “very seriously”. The US-funded Jordan International Police Training Centre (JIPTC) hosts mainly Palestinian and Iraqi officers. Civilian contractors from the US and elsewhere assist Jordanian police trainers at the facility in Muwaqqar, on the eastern outskirts of Amman. Jordanian government spokesman Mohammed Momani told the Associated Press that an investigation had been launched into whether the motive for Monday’s shooting attack at the JIPTC was personal or political. The assailant was a senior trainer with the rank of captain, a Jordanian security source was quoted as saying by Reuters. The US embassy in Amman confirmed that two US government employees were killed and two wounded in the incident. “Our heartfelt condolences go out to the families of all of the victims. Egyptian police have killed a top commander of a local ISIS affiliate in a Cairo raid, the Interior Ministry said in a statement Monday. Ashraf Ali Hassanein Gharabli, described as a leader of ISIS’ Egyptian affiliate Sinai Province, died in a firefight that erupted when police tried to arrest him Sunday in the capital’s El-Marg district, the statement said, adding that Gharabli had opened fire with a 9mm pistol when policemen approached him outside his car. His killing follows the Oct. 31 crash of a Russian plane in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. ISIS has claimed responsibility for bringing down the aircraft, which broke up in mid-air, killing all 224 people on board. The ministry’s statement said Gharabli was implicated in a series of militant attacks, including the beheading of a Croatian engineer last summer, the killing of an American oil worker a year earlier, and the July bombing of the Italian Consulate in Cairo, which killed one person and wounded at least 10. It also said Gharabli attempted to assassinate the former Interior Minister Mohamed Ibrahim in 2013, and was behind the September kidnapping and killing of a guide in the Western Desert who the militants said had worked with security forces.

Syria Headline: Regime forces kill 58 Islamic State fighters in Deir Ezzor province
The French army on Sunday bombed an oil supply center held by the Islamic State terrorist group (ISIS) in eastern Syria, Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced Monday. “We intervened in Syria… yesterday evening with a strike on an oil supply center near Deir Ezzor on the border between Iraq and Syria,” Le Drian told journalists on the sidelines of a forum on African peace and security in Dakar, Senegal. It was France’s third wave of strikes in Syria since President Francois Hollande decided in September to join the campaign there against ISIS. The two previous waves targeted training camps for foreign jihadists who were suspected of preparing attacks in France. Hollande on Thursday said operations would be expanded to include “all those sites from which terrorists could threaten our territory.” The president also said France would deploy its nuclear-powered aircraft carrier – the flagship of the French navy – to boost operations against ISIS in Syria and Iraq.

Syria Headline: Syrian regime forces capture northern village from ISIS militants
State media and activists say Syrian troops have seized a northern village from ISIS in an advance toward an air base besieged by the extremists for more than a year as Russia and the U.S.-led air campaign struck against strategic ISIS targets. State news agency SANA says troops and pro-government gunmen captured the village of Sheikh Ahmad in Aleppo province Monday. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said troops captured the village and advanced to a point some 2 kilometers from Kweiris air base. The observatory, which relies on local activists, says troops advanced under the cover of Russian and Syrian airstrikes. Breaking the siege imposed on Kweiris nearly two years ago would be a major success for government forces, which launched a multi-pronged offensive after Russia began carrying out airstrikes on Sept. 30. The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement Monday Russia’s air force struck 448 targets throughout Syria over the last three days. Targets hit included a repair workshop for armored vehicles near Kfar Nabouda in Hama province, which belonged to Al-Qaeda affiliate Nusra Front. Other targets said to belong to Nusra Front were a command center in Zarbe, a training camp near Kweiris east of Aleppo and a “large munitions stockpile” near Maheen in Homs province. The air force also said it bombed ISIS’ stronghold Raqqa, where two more munitions stockpiles were “completely destroyed.” Among other targets was a position used by Nusra Front for launching mortar attacks in Latakia and a stockpile of rockets in the mountains near Damascus kept by ISIS, it said. It added that militant groups have “changed their tactics” by constantly “changing the arms and munitions delivery routes” and moving at night. The ministry claimed that some of the information on the targets had come from the “Syrian opposition” but did not specify which groups it had worked with.

A taxi driver was killed and five other people, including a police officer, were wounded on Monday when Turkish security forces clashed with Kurdish militants in the southeastern town of Silvan, local media reported. Silvan, about 80 km (50 miles) east of Diyarbakir, the biggest city in mainly Kurdish southeast Turkey, has been under a week-long police curfew imposed in the fight against militants from the youth wing of the banned Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK). A 45-year-old cab driver was killed during the clashes and an elderly man was wounded when his house was hit by a shell, Hurriyet daily reported. The newspaper’s images from Silvan showed armored police vehicles on guard between bullet-scarred buildings. Streets were deserted but strewn with pavement stones, rubble and trash. The issue of migrants from the Middle East is creating tensions throughout the western world, but on Monday those tensions were seen clearest at Australia’s Christmas Island detention center, as migrants rioted and set fire to the facility. At the facility on Christmas Island, located 2,650 kilometers (1,650 miles) northwest of Perth and just south of Indonesia, migrants lit fires damaging medical, educational and sporting facilities, reports BBC. As of Monday morning government officials say the “major disturbance” is still in its full throes, and that guards have been pulled from the site for “safety reasons,” even while denying there was a “large-scale riot.” The violence appears to have been set off by Iranian migrants who started protesting the death of Fazel Chegeni, an Iranian Kurd, who broke out of the facility on Saturday. His body was found at the bottom of a cliff on Sunday, with a report on his death currently being prepared. But the protest quickly spun out of control, as “other detainees took advantage of the situation to engage in property damage and general unrest,” according to the officials. “A group of detainees, believed to be non-citizens whose visas have been cancelled under mandatory cancellation provisions, continue to agitate and cause damage to the facility. There are no reports at this time of any injuries to detainees or staff.” One 25-year-old detainee Matej Cuperka was quoted by ABC News, saying that he feared for his life due to the rioting.

Chad has declared a state of emergency in the Lake Chad region after a series of raids and suicide bombings there by militant Islamist group Boko Haram, the government said on Monday. Chad was instrumental in forcing Boko Haram to cede territory earlier this year, undermining its six-year campaign to carve out a Nigerian caliphate. But guerrillas have since ramped up attacks in remote border areas around Lake Chad, killing at least three people in a Chadian village on Sunday and three Nigerian refugees in northern Cameroon on Monday. Chad’s Communications Minister Hassan Sylla Bakari said the order, effective immediately, would grant authorities new powers to search and monitor residents in the region. There has not been a state of emergency in Chad, one of Africa’s military heavyweights, since a series of rebellions in the 2000s springing from its volatile east. Neighbouring Niger also has a state of emergency in its border region of Diffa. A top U.N. official said last month that an 8,700 regional task force will begin joint raids against Boko Haram when the rainy season ends soon. Vice Admiral Michael Franken, U.S. Africa Command’s Deputy for Military Operations, told Reuters on Monday he expected Nigeria-led actions to lead to a “significant degradation” in Boko Haram’s activities within six months. The United States has sent troops to provide intelligence and other assistance to counter Boko Haram.

Islamic extremists are expanding their reach in West Africa, using porous borders and exploiting political chaos to further their attacks, security experts said Monday at the opening of a regional conference on the jihadist threat. Some 800 security officials and analysts from across the region are taking part in the two-day conference to develop strategies for a coordinated response to the attacks that have mounted this year far beyond Boko Haram’s base in northeastern Nigeria. “I think the main characteristic of the threat today is that this is a threat that knows no boundaries,” said Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga, African Union special envoy in the fight against terrorism. As the conference took place, a female teenage suicide bomber in a town along the Cameroonian-Nigerian border targeted a mosque during afternoon prayers. At least four people were killed and dozens were wounded in Fotokol, according to regional Gov. Midjiyawa Bakari. It also comes after Senegalese authorities announced Saturday that several imams have been arrested and accused of supporting Boko Haram. While the extremist group has been attacking neighboring countries the recently announced arrests are the first suggesting a Boko Haram threat in Senegal, a mostly moderate Muslim nation. Boko Haram’s six-year-old uprising has left an estimated 20,000 people dead, according to Amnesty International. This year militants from the group have stepped up their attack across the Lake Chad region where the borders of Nigeria, Niger, Chad and Cameroon meet. “The porous borders between our countries are an advantage for our enemy,” Nigerian Gen. Mohammed Babagana Monguno said. Over the weekend, two girls wearing suicide vests detonated their explosives in Chad in a community along Lake Chad killing several people, according to national television. “From now on, what we need to focus on is how to establish a new model of governance that does not create the frustration that fuels these armed groups,” said Laurent Bigot, a regional analyst and former French diplomat. “Terrorism is not a cause, it is a consequence.”

Military sources said the Houthis re-took positions on Nov. 8 that they had lost to Saudi-led coalition forces in recent months, including a key overlook to the strategic Al-Anad airbase in Lahj province which borders Aden. The rebels also captured Damt, the second city in Daleh (Dali) province, the sources said. The rebel deployment near Al-Anad “poses a real danger to pro-government and coalition forces,” a military source told AFP. Pro-Hadi forces, supported by Saudi-led coalition air strikes, drove the Houthis out of Aden in a July offensive. Four other southern provinces – Lahj, Daleh, Abyan and Shabwa – were also re-taken in the offensive. Military sources said the rebels also re-took Damt, the second city in Daleh province, after besieging it for hours on Nov. 7. Meanwhile, 16 pro-Hadi soldiers were killed and six wounded on Nov. 8 when a landmine exploded as their vehicle passed in the city of Marib, east of the capital Sanaa, a military source said. China has conducted a test of an advanced new missile that could knock out US satellites and wreak havoc to the American defense industry, indicating Beijing is gaining the upper hand in space warfare. Two defense officials familiar with reports of the test revealed to Washington Free Beacon on Monday that the test of a Dong Neng-3 exoatmospheric vehicle took place on October 30, and was conducted from the Korla Missile Test Complex in western China. While Chinese press claimed the test was of a missile defense interceptor, the officials revealed the missile is a direct-ascent type meant to take out satellites. US State Department and Pentagon officials declined to comment on the test to the paper.

U.S. military officials have proposed sending more troops to Europe to deter the threat of aggression by Russia and have stepped training exercises aimed at countering possible interference with troop transfers by Moscow. The Wall Street Journal reports that proposals for the deployment of multiple U.S. brigades in Europe were made over the weekend at the Reagan National Defense Forum at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, Calif. The U.S. Army currently has two infantry brigades based in Eastern Europe, totaling approximately 7,000 soldiers. One other brigade rotates in and out of Europe on a regular basis. Army Chief of Staff Gen. Mark Milley told the Journal that he would like to send attack helicopter units and artillery brigades to Europe as well as more rotating brigades. Gen Philip Breedlove, the supreme allied commander of NATO, told the Journal that decisions on the proposals would be made “in the next couple of months.” Any plans for a troop increase must be developed by the Pentagon, approved by President Obama and funded by Congress. The paper reported that funding for the troop increase would be included in a budget request sent to Congress early next year.

They also want to tighten the so-called 100-installment scheme for repayment of arrears to the Greek treasury. Under the scheme, Greeks can repay their debt to the state in 100 separate payments. Creditors demand that someone who misses a payment is expelled from the scheme, while the Greek government wants a 25-day grace period.

Christians who have managed to escape ISIS have fled to places like Europe and Lebanon, while members of the faith also are under increasing pressure in Iran, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and other Gulf nations. The Christian population in Iraq has plummeted from 1.5 million in 2003 to current estimates of 275,000 and could be gone for good within five years, according to the report. The dwindling numbers are due to genocide, refugees fleeing to other countries, those who are internally displaced, and others hiding in plain sight and not allowing their faith to be publicly known. A dozen Christian families flee Iraq each day, according to 21st Century Wilberforce Initiative, a Falls Church, Va., nonprofit dedicated to promoting religious freedom worldwide.

Headline: Ground swallows dozen cars in Mississippi
Tests are to take place to determine why the ground opened up in a Mississippi city, swallowing 12 cars in a restaurant car park.
The large gash, some 400ft (120m) long and 35ft (11m) wide, opened up late on Saturday in Meridian, near the Alabama state line.
The area had suffered heavy rains over the past two weeks, the Meridian Star newspaper reported.
No-one was injured, and engineers will assess the ground on Monday.
Buck Roberts, the director of public safety in Meridian, told the newspaper it did not appear to be a sinkhole, which is usually caused when an underground water aquifer dries and the ground above it collapses.
“You can call it what you want, a cave-in or whatever, but it is not a sinkhole,” Mr Roberts said.

Headline: Second deadly cyclone in a week targets Yemen
The second cyclone in a week slammed into an island off Yemen’s coast Sunday with 127-mph winds, the equivalent of a Category 3 hurricane, killing at least two people, officials said. Cyclone Megh hit the eastern portion of the Yemeni island of Socotra, according to AccuWeather. Megh is forecast to continue moving toward the mainland of Yemen, likely hitting as a tropical storm or depression on Tuesday or Wednesday, AccuWeather said. Socotra, population 44,000, is a small island in the Arabian Sea, about 240 miles off the coast of Yemen. Preliminary reports indicate that two people were killed by the storm, the World Health Organization tweeted Sunday. Megh follows on the heels of Cyclone Chapala, which hit Yemen on Tuesday, killing at least nine people. Back-to-back cyclones affecting tiny Socotra Island within a week is unprecedented, according to weather.com.

Headline: Ashkelon submerged in severe flooding, heavy rain
Heavy rain hit Israel Monday morning, but no city was hit harder than the southern city of Ashkelon, where the emergency room at Barzilai Medical Center was flooded and the roofs of parked vehicles could barely be glimpsed above the rising waters. Even the most veteran doctors at Barzilai said they’d never seen such severe flooding which seeped into the hospital wards through the doors and windows. Among the wards that were flooded were the emergency room, the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit), an operations room, the cafeteria, the Department for Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Pediatric Department and the hospital’s main halls.
