Headline:  Confirmed: Israel to Supply Gas to Egypt in $4 Billion Deal

An Israeli firm will supply Egypt with natural gas, a company spokesman said Monday, more than two years after sabotage halted the flow of Egyptian gas to Israel. For more than a decade Israel relied on Egypt for roughly 40 percent of its gas needs in line with an export accord signed in 2005 by the two countries which are bound by a peace treaty. But in April 2012 Egypt annulled the contract, saying Israel had not met the financial obligations of the agreement, in a decision that came amid a spate of bomb attacks that targeted the pipeline used to transport natural gas to Israel and Jordan. On Sunday the Israeli owners of the Tamar offshore gas field informed the Tel Aviv stock exchange they had struck a deal to export natural gas to the Egyptian firm Dolphinus Holdings. A statement said Tamar was in “exclusive negotiations” with Dolphinus Holdings to provide it with up to 2.5 billion cubic metres (bcm) over a seven-year span.

Headline:     Palestinians attack new E.Jerusalem settler homes

Palestinians hurled Molotov cocktails at an apartment building in a flashpoint east Jerusalem neighborhood just hours after it was taken over by Jewish settlers, police said Tuesday. No one was injured in the incident in the Silwan neighborhood late Monday, which saw a gang of Palestinians firing flares and throwing petrol bombs at the building, a police statement said. No serious damage was caused and no arrests were made. The building was one of two structures housing 10 apartments that were taken over by Jewish settlers before dawn on Monday, sparking fierce local opposition. Such takeovers have also been strongly condemned by the international community.

Headline:     Hamas admits rebuilding tunnel network in wake of Gaza conflict

Hamas’ military wing, the Izz a-Din al-Qassam Brigades, is openly stating that the group is rebuilding the network of tunnels used for terror attacks, which was largely demolished by the IDF during the summer’s conflict in Gaza. A reporter for the Gaza-based newspaper Al-Resalah was visited a tunnel site Sunday, where he was shown the diggers hard at work repairing a tunnel bombed by IAF planes during Operation Protective Edge. The commander of the digging team, Abu-Khaled, said that the tunnel’s repairs had started “during one of the humanitarian ceasefires reached during the war.”

Headline:     Ya’alon to U.N. Chief: Israel Won’t Allow Gaza Reconstruction if Terror Tunnels Rebuilt

Israel will not allow the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip if Hamas continues to use construction materials to build terror tunnels, Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon told U.N. Secretary Ban Ki-moon during a meeting in New York on Monday. Ya’alon and Ban discussed the outcome of Israel’s Operation Protective Edge in Gaza and the continuing presence of U.N. peacekeepers in volatile areas along the Jewish state’s northern border. “We want the residents of Gaza to live in dignity and prosperity, rebuild their homes, and return to normal life,” Ya’alon said. “But, we are very worried. Just yesterday Hamas representatives said they intend to reconstruct the infiltration tunnels, instead of rebuilding the homes of Gaza’s residents.”

Headline:     Syrian mortar hits Israeli Golan Heights

Headline:     Will the UN Return Forces to the Golan Heights?

A mortar fired from Syria landed in Israeli Golan Heights near the border on Tuesday morning. There were no injuries or damage. The explosive is believed to have been fired as part of the more than three-year-old Syrian civil war. Heavy fighting between troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad and rebel forces has recently resumed near the Quneitra crossing on the border between Israel and Syria. Meanwhile, The UN Security Council on Monday held an assessment of the situation in the Golan Heights, and discussed the possibility of returning UN forces to the Syrian side of the Golan after they fled to the Israeli side a month ago. Speaking at the UN headquarters after the meeting, Argentinian Ambassador to the UN Maria Cristina Perceval told the Filipino-based Rappler that there is no definite timeline for the return of the UN Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) to the area. Forces were pulled after Syrian rebel forces took over UN positions

Headline: Jordan said working to prevent Jewish prayer at Temple Mount

Jordan’s King Abdullah II and other Jordanian government officials have been working to ensure that the Israeli Knesset does not ratify a bill that would allow Jews to pray at the Temple Mount, a Jordanian official said Tuesday. Khalid al-Shawabka, Jordan’s Ambassador to the Palestinian territories, claimed that Israeli MKs were attempting to pass a resolution which would effectively divide the compound between Muslims and Jews, the Palestinian Ma’an News Agency reported. “Jordan’s foreign minister has sent strongly-worded messages to foreign ministers of member states of the UN Security Council and to the UN demanding an end to the systematic assaults on the Al-Aqsa Mosque and on worshipers,” al-Shawabka told the news agency in an interview. “[T]he Al-Aqsa Mosque and Jerusalem are red lines,” al-Shawabka said, using a Muslim name for the compound. He added that the situation on the ground in the Israeli capital was “unacceptable,” though he did not elaborate.

Headline:   Trucks from Bekaa caught in crossfire in Syria, two dead

One Lebanese driver was wounded and two Syrians killed after trucks from the Bekaa Valley were caught up in crossfire at the Syria-Jordan border late Monday. The refrigerated trucks were transporting goods from Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley to the Gulf when they were caught up in a battle between the Syrian Army and rebels as they were about to cross into Jordan through the Nasib border crossing. There were at least 130 trucks waiting to cross when battles erupted in Nasib, a government-controlled border crossing surrounded by territory held by Syrian rebels. At least four trucks were completed burned, Tarshishi said. “The trucks were all carrying Lebanese products, fruits and vegetables, destined for the Gulf countries,” Tarshishi said. He said that communication with the truckers was completely cut off since Monday night due to the raging battle.

Headline:   Abdallah Azzam Brigades calls on Sunnis to fight Army

The “emir” of the Abdallah Azzam Brigades Sirajeddine Zureiqat called Tuesday for Sunnis of Lebanon to fight the Army if soldiers entered their areas and homes. “Sunni people of Lebanon; forbid the Army from entering your areas, raiding the homes of Muslims or the refugee camps,” Zureiqat posted on his official Twitter account, “regardless of the motives [of the raids].” Zureiqat’s recent call contradicted the one he made last week, in which he asked the group’s supporters to target Hezbollah and not soldiers. In Tuesday’s statement, the emir appeared to have changed his mind. “This Army only understands the language of force, and so does its master, the party of Iran,” Zureiqat added. “So answer any Army attack with arms and fire.”

Headline:  Blast kills 7 in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula

At least a roadside bomb in the restive Sinai Peninsula has killed seven Egyptian security force personnel and seriously wounded four, medical and security sources said.
They were killed by a remotely detonated roadside bomb on Sunday that exploded as a patrol responsible for protecting a natural gas pipeline passed by, the sources said.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack. The blast occurred southwest of provincial capital Al-Arish where two policemen were killed when their patrol car was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade three days ago. The explosion ripped through the military armored vehicle traveling south of Al-Arish, which is the provincial capital of northern Sinai. The troops were heading to an area to comb it for suspected militant activities. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief reporters.

Headline: Egypt PM says no plan for military action against ISIS

Egypt has no plans to provide the United States with direct military assistance in its war against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) even though American aerial bombardment may not be enough to defeat the group, the country’s prime minister said. But Ibrahim Mehleb left open the possibility of military action if Cairo’s Gulf Arab allies are threatened by the al-Qaeda offshoot. With one of the biggest armies in the Middle East and wide experience in battling militancy, Egypt is regarded as a vital ally for the United States, which provides billions of dollars in annual aid to Cairo. Mehleb said Egypt’s priority is ensuring stability at home, where security officials face resilient jihadist insurgents based in the Sinai Peninsula and regard militants in neighboring Libya as a serious threat.

Syria Headline:  Syria air force strikes 200 times in 36 hours

The Syrian air force carried out more than 200 air strikes around the country in the past 36 hours, a group monitoring the war said on Tuesday, a rapid increase in government raids as US-led forces bomb Islamist insurgents elsewhere. The intensified strikes by President Bashar Assad’s forces will add to the fear among his opponents that the government is taking advantage of the US raids on Islamic State to attack other foes, including opposition groups that Washington backs. Analysts say the increase could be because the Syrian military wants to weaken rebel groups before they get training and equipment promised by the United States.

Iraq Headline:  ISIL militants capture two districts in Iraq’s Nineveh Province

The ISIL Takfiri militants have taken control of two districts in Iraq’s northern province of Nineveh as the Iraqi army has been battling the terrorists for nearly six months now. Iraqi military sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the ISIL members seized two districts in the town of Sinjar, situated over 400 kilometers (250 miles) northwest of the capital, Baghdad, on Monday. They added that the Takfiri terrorists have besieged civilian houses in these districts. This is while Kurdish Peshmerga forces defending Sinjar are trying to stop the militants’ advancement. Meanwhile, Izadi military officials have called on the Iraqi government to provide them with ammunition and secure the aerial space over Mount Sinjar. Also on Monday, an unnamed Iraqi security source said the ISIL militants are laying siege to about 700 Izadi families on Mount Sinjar.

Qara Tappa Iraq

Iraq Headline: Islamic State insurgents advance into Iraqi town of Qara Tappa

Islamic State militants advanced on the Iraqi town of Qara Tappa on Monday disguised as Kurdish peshmerga fighters, Kurdish security sources said. They seized two Kurdish villages after surprising the Kurdish fighters before launching the attack on Qara Tappa, 120 km (75 miles) north of Baghdad, seeking to expand their territory and heap pressure on Kurdish forces in disputed areas. “The terrorists were wearing peshmerga uniforms and this tactic helped them to easily infiltrate our defenses near Qara Tappa,” a peshmerga officer said on condition of anonymity. Reinforcements were sent from the Kurdish-controlled city of Khanaqin to repel the insurgents and prevent the town of Qara Tappa from falling, the sources said. The Kurdish security officers and residents said the militants approached Qara Tappa from the nearby towns of Saadiya and Jalawla, which they had already wrested from Kurdish control. Peshmerga officers and medical officials said at least 15 people were killed, including seven peshmerga fighters and eight residents.

At least 33 people have been killed in Iraq in a series of bombings in the capital city of Baghdad and the holy city of Karbala. An assailant blew up his explosives among worshipers leaving a Shia mosque in a commercial area in the center of Baghdad following midday prayers on Monday. Iraqi officials who spoke on condition of anonymity said at least 17 people lost their lives and 28 others were injured. Hours later, three separate car bombs went off simultaneously near government offices in the Shia holy city of Karbala, killing at least 16 people and injuring 40 others. Kurdish Headline: US sends lethal aid to Kurdish forces fighting ISIS in Kobani

Kurdish Headline: Islamic State fighters seize weapons cache airdropped by U.S.-led coalition forces meant for Kurds

The Pentagon has publicly acknowledged an air-drop of lethal aid to Kurdish rebels fighting the hardline Islamic State in the pivotal Syrian-Turkish border town of Kobani, shortly after news of considerable gains made against the terrorists there. The Sunday delivery, which also contained other supplies, comes on the heels of renewed US airstrikes on Syria and Iraq’s oil infrastructure in a bid to cripple the terrorist group’s hold on it. Eleven of the strikes were on the Kobani area overnight. A brief statement by US Central Command said US Air Force C-130 aircraft “delivered weapons, ammunition and medical supplies that were provided by Kurdish authorities in Iraq and intended to enable continued resistance against ISIL’s [Islamic State, formerly ISIS/ISIL] attempts to overtake Kobani.” A total of 27 drops with supplies were delivered, another official stated. The aircraft left the Syrian air space following the operation. On the Kurdish side, a spokesman acknowledged delivery of large quantities of ammunition, weapons and medical aid on Monday. The announcement followed another brief statement that “good news” would soon be released.

Headline: Canadian Soldier Killed After Being Run Over by Islamist

One of two Canadian soldiers run over by an Islamist extremist has died from his wounds Tuesday morning, according to NBC news. Late Monday night, Canadian police shot dead the attacker – a “homegrown” jihadist fanatic – after the 25 year-old man attacked soldiers without warning in a parking lot in his hometown. Martin Couture-Rouleau, a resident of the town of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu 40 km (24 miles) from Montreal, attempted to run over two soldiers late Monday night. Rouleau had allegedly called the police in the middle of the attack, according to the Le Paris newspaper, claiming it had been “in the name of Allah.” A 4-km (2.4 mile) car chase ensued, ending when the assailant’s car turned over into a ditch. Police were forced to shoot him dead after he ran at them with a knife. While Quebec police did not say whether the soldiers were in uniform, it has been confirmed that one was critically injured. The murdered soldier’s name has not been released at the request of his family.

Three American teenage girls from Colorado have been detained in Germany while reportedly on their way to Syria to join ISIS. The girls are 15 and 16 years old and are believed to be of Somali descent. The trio were reported missing last Friday from their homes in Denver and tracked to Frankfurt by the FBI. The girls were trying ‘to fulfill what they believe is some vision that has been put out on a slick media campaign’ by radical groups in Syria, including ISIS, a law enforcement official told ABC News today. The official added there are other cases of high school age teenagers trying to get to Syria that have not been made public.

On Monday, ISIS supporters on Twitter declared Wednesday the deadline for the American hostage Peter Kassig promised to be beheaded by the group, following the beheading of the British aide worker in Syria, Alan Henning. A video was released earlier this month, contained the beheading of Henning and threats to execute Kassig next. Quoting the ISIS beheader in the video: “Obama, you have started your aerial bombardment of the Sham which keeps on striking our people. Headline: NATO intercepts Russian jets over Baltic Sea

NATO scrambled fighter jets twice in two days to intercept Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea, it said Tuesday amid reports that Russian military activity in the region is increasing. Lt. Col. Robert Gericke said the Russian aircraft were flying in international airspace and had not violated the territory of alliance members. Two Canadian F-18 Hornet jets were scrambled from the Siauliai Air Base in Lithuania on Monday to intercept a Russian Ilyushin-20 surveillance aircraft, which they shadowed for some 15 minutes, NATO said. “Once identification was successful, the intercept mission was completed and the two Hornets returned to their base,” a NATO statement said. Earlier, the Latvian military tweeted that NATO F-16 jets were dispatched on Tuesday to intercept a Russian Ilyushin-20 surveillance aircraft over the Baltic Sea. Gericke confirmed that NATO jets had also intercepted a Russian aircraft that day, but could not immediately provide more details. NATO, which has 16 fighter jets in the region monitoring Baltic airspace, said it regularly launches jets to identify “unknown or potentially hostile aircraft” in the proximity of national airspace.

Headline:   Senator Mark Kirk: Congress Will Not Support ‘Obama-Khamenei’ Nuclear Deal

The Obama administration reportedly wants to cut Congress out of any nuclear deal with Iran – at least for the short-term — fearing they would lose if any measure to lift sanctions came to a vote. Though the White House is pushing back on the claims, The New York Times reports that the Treasury Department already has examined the issue and determined President Obama has the authority to “suspend” most sanctions currently imposed on Iran without a vote by Congress. It would take an act of Congress to permanently lift those sanctions. But the Times reports that Obama advisers have concluded they’d probably lose such a vote, even if Democrats hold the Senate in next month’s elections. Instead, the administration could try to unilaterally suspend sanctions, if a deal with Iran is reached.

Headline:   Iran says to defend Baghdad, no need for ‘foreign’ troops

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Tuesday told Iraq’s visiting premier that the Baghdad government is capable of defeating Islamic State (IS) without “foreign” troops being deployed, offering further Iranian military help. “We stand beside you and will seriously defend your government like the previous government,” Khamenei said in a meeting in Tehran with Iraq’s Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi. “Iran recognises the security of Iraq, (our) neighbour and brother country, as its own security,” Khamenei said, quoted by state television. The all-powerful Iranian leader said he believed that Iraqis had “the capacity to overcome the terrorists and establish security” alone without the “need for foreign presence”. To counter an offensive launched by IS on June 9, Iran has supplied Iraqi Kurds with weapons and sent military advisers to Baghdad, while denying it has deployed ground troops. But in early October, Iranian television published a rare picture of its elite Quds Force chief, Major General Qassem Suleimani, in an Iraqi battlefield alongside Kurdish peshmerga forces.

Headline:   Afghan officials: Attacks by insurgents on army, police checkpoints kill at least 4 troops

Officials say insurgents have attacked several army checkpoints in eastern and southern Afghanistan, killing at least four troops and wounding several people. No one has claimed responsibility for the attacks, which happened Sunday, but the Taliban have stepped up assaults on Afghan and NATO forces ahead of the pullout of most foreign combat troops by the end of the year. Defense ministry spokesman Gen. Mohammad Zahir Azimi said on Monday that the four soldiers died in an attack in the eastern province of Logar, in the Charkh district. He says scores of insurgents were killed in a subsequent airstrike there. In southern Uruzgan province, spokesman Dost Mohammad Nayab says insurgents attacked police checkpoints in Gezab district. Libya’s interim government on Tuesday ordered army troops to launch a military operation aimed at “liberating” capital Tripoli from armed militias. In a statement, the government said it had ordered the army to “liberate” Tripoli – and the state institutions located therein – from armed groups. It called on young Libyans in Tripoli and its outskirts “to join hands with the army to liberate yourselves, your families and your city.” The interim government went on to accuse local militias of destroying public and private property in the city, torturing residents and attacking the homes of government officials. It also vowed to prosecute the speaker of Libya’s former interim parliament and the head of the country’s “illegitimate government” – now based in Tripoli – for “staging a coup” against the legitimate authority.

Headline:   Algeria-Morocco : tension flares up

The firing at about a dozen Moroccans at the border by Algerian forces on Saturday is increasing tensions between Algiers and Rabat. The firing caused no casualties but one person was seriously injured. Morocco is accusing Algeria of continuing to commit provocative acts that will hamper the management of the border. The Moroccan Foreign Ministry described the firing as an “attack on the life of Moroccan civilians by the Algerian Army” while Algeria alleged that Morocco distorted the incident. Several members of the Moroccan cabinet held a press conference to give clarifications on the border shooting. These included Foreign Minister Salah Eddine Mezouar, Interior Minister Mohamed Hassad and Communication Minister Mustapha Khalfi. Mezouar who described the attack as “unprecedented escalation” said it is a culmination of a series of previous incidents by the Algerian authorities at the borders. Such an incident “affects the norms of neighborliness” and “is incompatible with the norms of humanitarian and international human rights” with regards to border issues, he said.

Turkey is to allow Iraqi Kurdish fighters to cross the Syrian border to fight Islamic State (IS) militants in Kobane, in what is being seen as a policy reversal. Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said talks on the subject were continuing. Tens of thousands of people have fled months of fighting in Kobane between IS forces and Syrian Kurd defenders. The announcement came shortly after the US carried out air drops of weapons to the town’s Kurdish fighters. Meanwhile the US-led coalition has carried out its first air strike of the day, against IS positions in the south-west of the town, says the BBC’s Kasra Naji on the Turkish border. US Central Command later confirmed six strikes near Kobane over Sunday and Monday, as well as six in Iraq near Falluja and Baiji involving French and UK aircraft.

At least 20 fighters from the Shia Houthi Ansarullah movement have lost their lives in a fresh fighting with al-Qaeda-linked militants in southern Yemen. Yemeni tribal sources said on Monday that the deadly clashes broke out in the strategic town of Rada’ in the province of al-Bayda. The al-Qaeda-linked militants also seized 12 Ansarullah fighters during the clashes. Houthi fighters have been making advances in Yemen’s restive south, taking control of the towns of Yarim and Rada’.  Al-Qaeda-linked militants were controlling the towns for nearly two years. The Ansarullah fighters have been sending reinforcements to the south, near al-Qaeda strongholds, in an attempt to drive the terrorists out of the area. Meanwhile, A suicide car bomb on Monday targeted a house used by Shiite Houthi rebels in a town south of Sanaa, killing at least 10 and injuring 15, security officials said, in an attack that bore all the hallmarks of Al Qaeda. Hong Kong’s High Court has ordered anti-election law protesters occupying streets in the Mong Kok residential and commercial district to leave the area. The protesters were ordered to disband as of Monday evening. Justice Jeremy Poon Shiu-chor accepted the arguments of lawyers for the plaintiffs that the occupations have continued for a long time and had caused public nuisance and “inconvenience.” The judge added that the prolonged occupation could lead to more violence between police and protesters in the area. Chief Superintendent of the Police Public Relations Branch, Hui Chun-tak, said Monday afternoon that protesters in Mong Kok had “held umbrellas in their hands and posed to charge police cordons.”

The North’s soldiers fired back in an exchange of gunfire that lasted about 10 minutes but the situation did not escalate, a ministry official said.”There were no casualties or property damage,” the official said. The incident was the latest in a series of confrontations in recent weeks between the rival Koreas, that remain technically at war, and follows an urgent meeting between senior military officials on Wednesday to discuss how to ease tensions. The Defense Department said Sunday that it is preparing a quick-response medical team to help health-care professionals should the Ebola virus spread in the United States. Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered the training of the 30-member team and said the effort was in response to a Department of Health and Human Services request. Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said the move is “an added, prudent measure to ensure our nation is ready to respond quickly, effectively and safely in the event of additional Ebola cases.” The military is already assisting in efforts to stop the spread of Ebola in West Africa, where roughly 4,300 people have died so far this year from the virus. Last week, six U.S. military planes delivered more supplies and 100 Marines to West Africa. The Marines’ arrival means roughly 300 U.S. service members are now in the region, said Maj. Gen. Darryl A. Williams, the commander leading the U.S. response.

Headline: 300,000 people in U.S. have Chagas disease as country unsure how to deal with growing threat

As the world continues to grapple with the Ebola epidemic raging in West Africa, there’s growing concern about another invasive disease whose origin is much closer to home. Chagas – along with its cousins Dengue Fever and the Chikungunya virus – is a disease found mainly in Latin America, but is starting to gain a foothold in the U.S. Caused by a parasite inside triatomines, or “kissing bugs,” Chagas causes fever, fatigue, body aches, headache and other symptoms in its early stages, while more severe symptoms such as cardiac arrest and megacolon emerge in its chronic phase. While the disease is found mainly in poor, rural parts of Latin America – the U.S.’s Center for Disease Control estimates that 8 million people in the region live with the disease – isolated cases of Chagas have begun to crop up throughout the U.S. in places like Louisiana, Texas and Virginia. The CDC believes that there are currently 300,000 people infected with Chagas in the U.S., enough for a clinic devoted to diagnosing and treating the disease to open at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles and doctors in New York City and Georgia to start screening patients who have travelled to Latin America.

Headline:    US denies Kerry linked stalled peace talks to rise of IS

US Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday called for a resumption of the Israel-Palestinian peace process, saying the talks were vital in the fight against extremism. “It is imperative that we find a way to get back to the negotiations,” Kerry said at a State Department ceremony marking the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha. We need “to find a way to create two states that can live together side by side, two peoples, with both of their aspirations being respected,” Kerry added.  “I still believe that’s possible, and I still believe we need to work towards it.” He said the unresolved Israel-Palestinian conflict was fueling recruitment for the Islamic State jihadist group. “There wasn’t a leader I met with in the region who didn’t raise with me spontaneously the need to try to get peace between Israel and the Palestinians, because it was a cause of recruitment and of street anger and agitation,” Kerry said. “People need to understand the connection of that. And it has something to do with humiliation and denial and absence of dignity,” he added.

Palestinians “must be present at the Al-Aqsa Mosque,” he said. “We must stop them (the settlers) from entering by any means possible. Headline: Islamic State flying three jets in Syria: monitor

Iraqi pilots who have joined Islamic State in Syria are training members of the group to fly in three captured fighter jets, a group monitoring the war said on Friday, saying it was the first time the militant group had taken to the air. The group, which has seized swathes of land in Syria and Iraq, has been flying the planes over the captured al-Jarrah military airport east of Aleppo, said Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Reuters was not immediately able to verify the report and U.S. Central Command said it was not aware of Islamic State flying jets in Syria. U.S-led forces are bombing Islamic State bases in Syria and Iraq. The group has regularly used weaponry captured from the Syrian and Iraqi armies and has overrun several military bases but, if the report is confirmed, this would be the first time it has been able to pilot warplanes. “They have trainers, Iraqi officers who were pilots before for (former Iraqi president) Saddam Hussein,” Abdulrahman said. “People saw the flights, they went up many times from the airport and they are flying in the skies outside the airport and coming back,” he said, citing witnesses in northern Aleppo province near the base, which is 70 km (45 miles) south of the Turkish border. Witnesses reported the flights were at a low altitude and only lasted five to 10 minutes before landing, the Observatory said. It was not possible to reach the Syrian government for comment and state media did not mention the report. It was not clear whether the jets were equipped with weaponry or whether the pilots could fly longer distances in the planes, which witnesses said appeared to be MiG 21 or MiG 23 models captured from the Syrian military.

Cameroon said on Friday its forces had killed 107 fighters from Islamist sect Boko Haram in clashes in the north, an area that has seen regular cross-border raids by the Nigerian militants. News of the fighting coincided with an announcement from neighboring Nigeria that it had agreed a ceasefire with the movement after a bloody five-year insurgency – though there was no confirmation from Boko Haram. The clashes in Cameroon’s Far North region began after the militants crossed the border between the towns of Amchide and Limani on Wednesday and continued on Thursday from around 11 a.m. (6 a.m. EDT), said Defence Minister Edgar Alain Mebe Ngo’o in a statement. Eight Cameroonian soldiers were killed and seven wounded in the fighting, he added. A Boko Haram vehicle packed with ammunition and explosives was destroyed and Cameroon troops now controlled the area, the statement said. There was no independent confirmation and it was not possible to obtain comment from Boko Haram.

Headline: Fresh clashes in Hong Kong as pro-democracy activists regroup

Hong Kong riot police used pepper spray and baton charged pro-democracy protesters who mobilised en masse on Friday evening after a pre-dawn clearance of a major protest zone in the Chinese-controlled financial hub. Over a thousand protesters, some clad in protective goggles and helmets, thronged to the gritty and congested Mong Kok district after work and school on Friday evening, to try to reclaim sections of an intersection that police had cleared in a surprise raid early on Friday. Student leaders urged people via Facebook and social media to retake the area that has been a flashpoint for ugly street fights between students and mobs, including triads, or local gangsters, intent on breaking up their protracted and unprecedented protest movement. Demonstrators chanting “open the road” tried to break through multiple police lines and used upturned umbrellas to shield themselves from pepper spray. In the melee, police used batons and scuffled violently with throngs of activists, some of whom were wrestled away and taken into police custody. “It’s vital to keep this site,” said Joshua Wong, a bookish 18-year-old whose fiery speeches have helped drive the protests. “All the sites are very important. We will stay and fight till the end,” he said while standing atop a subway station exit and addressing the seething crowds below.

Headline: Arizona gay marriage: AG Tom Horne will not appeal ruling, same sex couples can marry immediately

Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said he will not appeal a federal judge’s ruling that the state’s ban on same-sex unions is unconstitutional. Horne said the state will begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples Friday. “I think it’s over. This is it. This is the final decision to be made,” Horne said. Horne decided not to file an appeal because the probability of the court’s reversing the decision would be “zero.” He said filing an appeal would be a waste of taxpayer money. The ruling Friday by U.S. District Judge John Sedwick bars state officials from enforcing a 1996 state law and a 2008 voter-approved constitutional amendment that outlawed gay marriage. Sedwick said in his ruling that because the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals had already ruled against gay marriage bans in Nevada and Idaho, he did not need to give a lengthy reason for his ruling and was bound by the appeals’ court decision. “A stay of this decision to allow defendants to appeal is not warranted. It is clear that an appeal to the 9th Circuit would not succeed. It is also clear … that the High Court will turn a deaf ear on any request for relief from the 9th Circuit’s decision,” Sedwick said.

Headline:   Powerful Hurricane Gonzalo approaching Bermuda

Hurricane Gonzalo pounded Bermuda with wind and heavy surf on Friday, bearing down on the tiny British territory as a powerful Category 3 storm that could raise coastal seas as much as 10 feet (3 meters). The storm was centered about 100 miles (165 kilometers) south-southwest of Bermuda Friday afternoon with top sustained winds of 125 mph (205 kph), according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami. It was moving to the north-northeast at 16 mph (26 kph) and was expected to pass near or over Bermuda Friday evening. A white haze covered the island as waves slammed into the shore and the wind uprooted banana trees. The Bermuda Weather Service said the eye of Gonzalo was expected to move over the island in the next few hours, bringing a lull in winds, but forecasters warned people not to go outside because the most dangerous winds were expected after nightfall. Hurricane-force winds were predicted to batter Bermuda for seven hours, and forecasters said a storm surge would cause significant flooding on an island about one-third the size of Washington, D.C.

Headline:  Spanish parliament set to vote on recognizing the Palestinian state

The Spanish parliament is set to vote on recognizing the Palestinian state, Al Arabiya News channel reported Thursday. The announcement comes days after British lawmakers voted overwhelmingly in favor of recognizing Palestine as a state. The motion – which is non-binding – was passed by 274 in favor to 12 votes against, to “recognize the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel” as part of a “contribution to securing a negotiated two-state solution.” It came only a week after Sweden’s new center-left government is set to officially recognize Palestine – a move that has been condemned by Israel, which says an independent Palestine can only be achieved through negotiations.

Headline:      Israeli forces kill Palestinian teen in West Bank clashes

A Palestinian teen critically wounded in clashes with Israeli security forces in the West Bank died in a Ramallah hospital on Thursday. According to eyewitnesses, 13-year-old Bahe Samir was hit by a live bullet in his chest during clashes in the Beit Laqia village northwest of Ramallah earlier that day. He was taken to the government hospital in Ramallah, and later died of his wounds, the Palestinian Red Cross said. According to the Israeli army, a unit entered the village after stones were thrown in the area. As the unit left the village, soldiers stepped off their vehicle to repair an unspecified malfunction when Palestinians started hurling firebombs at them, from a distance of about 20 meters, the army said. The unit commander opened fire at the Palestinians, killing the teen. Military Police is expected to investigate the incident. In East Jerusalem, a Border Police officer suffered light to moderate wounds by a firecracker during clashes between Palestinian youths and police forces in the Ras al-Amud neighborhood. Many teenagers and children took part in the unrest. Four firebombs were lobbed at the Nof Zion neighborhood, causing damage to a parked car and to a building, but did not result in casualties. In Silwan, firebombs were thrown at a private vehicle and at a police cruiser, causing some damage but no casualties. Clashes between Palestinians and security forces started on Tuesday night in the Old City area of East Jerusalem, after the Jerusalem District Police banned Muslims under the age of 50 from entering the Temple Mount compound. On Wednesday morning, clashes developed between hundreds of youngsters and police forces near the Temple Mount and in the surrounding Old City neighborhoods. Palestinians fired firecrackers and threw firebombs at police forces, which responded with sponge rounds and flash grenades. Four Palestinians were arrested in the clashes and three officers were lightly wounded. Police later closed the Temple Mount to Jews and tourists earlier than usual. At the same time, hundreds of police officers guarded thousands of Jews who arrived at the Western Wall for a ritual on the last day of Sukkot. The unrest continued on Thursday. In the most serious incident, several dozen Palestinians, including many children on their way to school, tried to attack the settlement of Ma’aleh Zeitim in the A-Tur neighborhood. A Border Police unit at the area dispersed the Palestinians, when an officer was wounded in his neck by a firecracker. He was taken to the Hadassah Hospital in Mount Scopus.

Headline:      Islamic Jihad Head Praises Iran Role in Gaza War Against Israel

The head of the Islamic Jihad terrorist group praised Iran for its role in last summer’s Gaza conflict against Israel, during a visit to Tehran on Thursday. “Definitely, the victory was achieved with the assistance of the Islamic republic,” Ramadan Abdullah Shallah said at a meeting with Iran’s supreme guide, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, quoted by Fars news agency. “Without Iran’s strategic and efficient help, resistance and victory in Gaza would have been impossible,” he said of the 50-day war in which 2,200 Gazans and 73 Israelis died and the Hamas-ruled territory suffered serious damage. Iran, whose government is sworn to Israel’s destruction, is one of the world’s leading sponsors of terrorism, and a longtime backer of both Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Iran has been the primary supplier of the rockets Islamist terrorists in Gaza have used to target Israeli civilians, as well as other support in terms of weaponry, funding and training. Recently, a senior Iranian military official claimed Iran was also helping terrorists fight Israel “in the field.” Iran has also been actively working to arm terrorists in Judea and Samaria.

Headline:      Hamas official slams UN chief Ban’s ‘hypocrisy’ after visit to Gaza, Israel

Hamas on Wednesday accused UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of hypocrisy and double standards after  his visit to Gaza and southern Israel on Tuesday. Mahmoud Zahar took offense  to comments the UN chief made while on a tour of a Hamas infiltration tunnel uncovered by the IDF leading from the Gaza Strip into southern Israel near Kibbutz Ein Hashlosha. Ban expressed shock at the threats faced by residents of southern Israel, saying “I have repeated the saying that rocket attacks killing civilian population is not acceptable. It should (be) condemned. Nobody should live on the constant threat or fear by these rockets and the penetrating, alarming underground tunnels.” Zahar said in response on Wednesday that “the occupation’s arsenal and nuclear reactor are far more dangerous than the tunnel he was talking about.”

Headline:  Judeh urges UN chief, world to stop Israeli violations in Jerusalem shrine

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh late Wednesday urged UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the international community to stop the Israeli violations in Al-Haram Al Sharif compound in Jerusalem. According to a Foreign Ministry statement emailed to The Jordan Times, Judeh called the UN chief and delivered a “strongly-worded message” about continued Israeli violations and escalatory measures. He cited the Israeli security forces’ storming the courtyard of the Al-Aqsa Mosque this week, where they closed the gates and prevented worshippers under the age of 50 from performing their prayers in the holy shrine, including the mosque guards. They also intimidated Jordanian waqf staff and allowed Jewish extremists to desecrate the sanctity of the mosque, the third holiest place in Islam. The minister stressed that such “flagrant violations would drag the region into a religious conflict, undermine the chances of achieving peace and nourish extremism, terrorism and violence in the region and the world.”

Headline:  Hezbollah militants clash with Al Nusra in Bekaa

Amid reports that Lebanon’s role in the international coalition against extremists was murky at best, fresh clashes between Hezbollah and Syrian mercenaries in the Bekaa Valley’s Brital region occurred overnight, while a significant breach within the Sunni community pitted controversial political figures against each other. Regrettably, a creeping sectarian discourse gained momentum, which added to Lebanon’s mounting afflictions. According to the official narrative, Jabhat Al Nusra and Daesh fighters killed a number of civilians and soldiers in Arsal last August and, equally important, some received assistance from Sunni Lebanese sympathizers. A few days ago, Shaikh Mustafa Hujairi, a leading cleric in Tripoli, was charged with belonging to the Al Nusra Front. On Wednesday, the cleric vowed to surrender just as soon as a fair judicial system was established in the country, which meant that he had no intention of submitting himself to authorities. “If the Nusra Front is a terrorist organization then you should hold Walid Junblatt accountable because he considered it to be a faction of the Syrian revolution,” Hujairi said. The outskirts of the Bekaa border town of Brital on Wednesday witnessed an exchange of gunfire between Syrian gunmen and Hizbullah fighters, state-run National News Agency reported. “The Ijr al-Harf area on the Lebanese-Syrian border has witnessed an exchange of gunfire between Syrian gunmen and a Hizbullah post,” NNA said. It did not elaborate or report any casualties. The development comes after the Lebanese army repelled an overnight infiltration by gunmen who tried to progress into the northeastern border area of Wadi Rafeq. The area lies between al-Qaa and Ras Baalbek. LBCI reported that Hizbullah fighters cooperated with the army in repelling the attack.

Thousands of people took to the streets of Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province on Wednesday evening to protest a death sentence handed down earlier in the day against leading anti-government Shiite cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. Activists told MEE the protest in Qatif province was peaceful and said another rally was planned for Thursday evening. “When Sheikh Nimr was arrested in 2012, thousands of people took part in the biggest protest Qatif had ever seen,” said Ali Dubaisy, a Saudi human rights activist from the Eastern Province. “The protest on Wednesday against his death sentence can now be considered the second biggest – thousands of people were on the streets.” If Sheikh Nimr were to be executed it could very well spawn a new uprising

An Egyptian health official says two bombs have exploded at a Sufi Muslim religious festival in a city in the Nile Delta, wounding 11 people. Magdy Awad, chairman of the local ambulance services, says the bombs went off behind a mosque in Tanta on Thursday evening, as people were celebrating the Festival of Sheikh el-Sayyed el-Baddawi, which draws massive crowds every year. Most of the victims were wounded by flying shrapnel. An Egyptian security official says bomb squads were able to disarm a third explosive device placed near the mosque. Damascus, SANA-Foreign and Expatriates Ministry addressed two identical letters to the UN Secretary-General and Head of the UN Security Council on the Turkish government’s hostile policies against Syria. Rebuffing Turkish attempts for setting up a buffer zone in Syria, the ministry chided them as a blatant violation of the UN Charter and international law that call for respecting national sovereignty of states and non-interference in their domestic affairs. Turkey’s conduct, moreover, is a breach of the UN counter-terrorism resolutions, added the letters, making it necessary that the international community take action against the Turkish government’s violations. Since the outbreak of the crisis, the Turkish government has stopped at nothing in its attempts to undermine stability in Syria and endanger its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the letters lamented, in what it described as “flagrantly at variance with the principle of good neighborliness.” Turkey has been providing political, military and logistical support to terrorist organizations and facilitating the entry of terrorists coming from over 83 countries, said the ministry, making Turkey a basic springboard for terrorism hitting Syria and Iraq and jeopardizing the entire region. The ministry cited the developments in Ayn al-Arab town in northern Syria as a “proof of the close relations between Turkey and ISIS”.

Syria Headline:   ISIS Loses Ground In Kobani After ‘Several Hundred’ Militants Killed In Airstrikes

Intensified airstrikes on the Syrian border town of Kobani have forced the Islamic State group to retreat as Kurdish forces regained control of areas lost earlier this week, according to media reports. In the last 48 hours, hundreds of ISIS militants have reportedly been killed in airstrikes carried out by the United States-led coalition. “Maybe in the few past days (Islamic State) was controlling about 40 percent of the city of Kobani, but now… less than 20 percent of the city is under their control,” Idriss Nassan, a local Kurdish official, told BBC late on Wednesday. “Today YPG started cleaning operations in the east and south-east of Kobani.” YPG is a group of Kurdish fighters engaged in battle with ISIS militants in the strategic border town. Meanwhile, violent clashes between Kurdish fighters and militants of the Islamic State group were also reported in the town’s northwest amid overnight airstrikes in the region, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The United States has held direct talks for the first time with a key Syrian Kurdish group, whose troops have been battling the Islamic State group, the State Department said Thursday. Previous contacts with the powerful Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) had been handled through intermediaries but a State Department official — who was not identified — met with the group within the last week, spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters. “We have engaged over the course of just last weekend directly with the PYD,” Psaki said. Asked if the United States was discussing the PYD’s urgent appeals for weapons, she said: “I don’t think we’re at that point.” The meeting with the PYD took place in Paris, a US official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. US officials did not confirm or deny whether Secretary of State John Kerry presided over the talks. Kerry was in Paris as recently as Monday.

Kurdish Headline: PKK vows to resume fight in Turkey

The Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) threatened to resume “armed struggle” in Turkey if the Turkish authorities continue “watching” the situation in the border city of Kobane without taking action. Jamil Baik, a senior PKK official, vowed to reactivate  the Kurdish guerellas in Turkey if the Turkish government remains silent on the ongoing attacks of militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) against the Syrian Kurdish city of Kobane at the Turkish border. “We warned Turkey not to proceed with this policy, and emphasized our ability to resume the armed struggle for defending our people,” the PKK official told Le Mond. “We suffice now sending our fighters from Qandil Mountain in the far north of Iraq to Turkey,” he added. The imprisoned PKK leader, Abdullah Ocalan, threatened in remarks leaked from prison to end the peace process with Turkey if it did not take action to save Kobane before the end of this month.

Headline: Russia plays down cooperation with U.S. against Islamic State militants

Headline:  Moscow says U.S. working on military ‘scenarios’ at Russia’s borders

Russia played down comments by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on Thursday over sharing intelligence about Islamic State militants, saying Moscow refuses to be involved in coalitions that breach “international law”. Without denying that cooperation existed, a statement from the Foreign Ministry said clarification was needed on reports that Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had agreed on intelligence sharing. Kerry, speaking after meeting Lavrov in Paris earlier this week, said the United States and Russia had agreed to “intensify intelligence cooperation with respect to ISIL and other counterterrorism challenges of the region.” The Russian ministry said Moscow already has been providing help to Syria and Iraq in their fight against “terrorism”. Meanwhile, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu accused the United States on Thursday of working on military “scenarios” near Russia’s borders that he said were a source of grave concern.

Headline:  Iran, US say some headway made in “difficult” nuclear talks

Iran and the United States said they made some progress in high-level nuclear talks but much work remained to clinch a breakthrough deal by a late-November deadline. Both sides said they still aimed to meet the self-imposed Nov. 24 date, despite doubts among many experts that they can reach a full agreement to end a decade-old dispute over Tehran’s nuclear programme with just a few weeks remaining. U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry left Vienna early on Thursday after six hours of talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif and European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton the previous day, but his officials remained to continue the talks through Thursday. “It was very difficult, serious and intensive … but instead of focusing on problems, we discussed solutions as well,” Zarif told Iranian media on Thursday, sources who were present told Reuters. “There was progress in all the fields.” The U.S. side also said progress was made. Zarif said he would next meet Kerry and Ashton in three to four weeks’ time though not in Vienna, Iranian state television reported. Ashton coordinates talks with Iran on behalf of the six other countries involved, including the United States.

Headline:    U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia warns of attacks by Somali militants

The U.S. Embassy in Ethiopia has warned of a possible attack by Somali militant group al Shabaab and urged its nationals to avoid large crowds and hotels and restaurants in an upscale district of the capital Addis Ababa. “The Embassy has received threat reports of al Shabaab’s intent to target the Bole area,” the embassy said in a statement on Tuesday, referring to a wealthy district in the capital. The Ethiopian authorities said late last year that its security forces were on heightened alert after receiving strong evidence al Shabaab was plotting further attacks after a botched suicide bombing in Addis Ababa. Ethiopian troops, alongside forces from Uganda, Burundi, Kenya and Djibouti, are part of an African Union (AU) mission fighting al Shabaab inside Somalia. Their presence has been used by the al Qaeda-aligned insurgents as a rallying cry for a holy war against foreign troops on Somali soil.

Headline:  Uganda to buy weapons on behalf of South Sudan

The South Sudanese government has signed a long-term agreement on military cooperation with Uganda, defence Minister, Kuol Manyang Juuk said on Monday. Full details of the agreement are yet to be made public, although it’s understood it will allow Uganda purchase weapons and technological support on behalf of South Sudan if required. The announcement came after Juuk and his Ugandan counterpart, Crispus Kiyonga held a meeting at which they discussed military and weapons cooperation, Sudan Tribune has reported. “We have signed the cooperation agreement in order to work together and support each other,” Juuk told the state-owned South Sudan Television (SSTV). The development follows the recent visit of president Salva Kiir to the Ugandan capital, Kampala, where he attended a summit on the Standard Gauge Railway, a regional developmental initiative aimed at fostering the movement of people, goods and services across the region. According to the minister in the office of the president, Awan Guol Riak, Kiir was able to hold bilateral discussions with the heads of state and governments in the region, including the host, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, with whom the former discussed issues connected to peace talks in Ethiopia.

Headline: Libya’s Haftar fails to gain ground in Benghazi offensive

Islamist fighters held their ground Thursday in the face of an assault by an ex-general backed by army units aimed at retaking Libya’s second city of Benghazi, military sources said. Medics said at least 17 people were killed in 24 hours of fighting since Khalifa Haftar’s forces early on Wednesday launched what he called an operation to “liberate” the city. Tanks spearheaded attacks on the Islamist “February 17 Martyrs Brigade,” while warplanes carried out raids on its headquarters in a western suburb of the Mediterranean city. Haftar’s forces said they captured the February 17 headquarters after several hours of clashes on Wednesday. But military sources said Thursday that pro-government forces were later forced to withdraw from the former army base under fire by Islamist fighters. Several explosions and gunfire echoed throughout the night, AFP correspondents said, before the fighting eased on Thursday as military aircraft swept over the city.

Headline:   Islamic group claims Libyan city in name of ISIL in what may become trend

A Libyan city has been captured in the name of Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. An Islamic group said it seized the Libyan city of Darnah as part of the new caliphate of ISIL. The statement by the Islamic Youth Shura Council, known by its Arabic acronym, MSSI, could mark the first success by ISIL in North Africa. “Despite the lack of public statements from ISIS [ISIL] on the matter, MSSI’s gambit in Libya could be a model for future acquisition of territory by the Islamic State beyond its base in Iraq and Syria,” Aaron Zelin, a researcher at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, said. ISIL has not confirmed any role in the capture of Darnah, announced by Islamic Youth on Oct. 3. Since May, Islamic Youth has conducted patrols in Darnah, a city of 80,000 along the Mediterranean Sea. Islamic Youth, formed in April 2014, has used ISIL’s insignia since June. Little is known of the group, which shares Darnah with other Islamic militias and staged an execution in a sport stadium in August. In his report, titled “The Islamic State’s First Colony in Libya,” Zelin said the purported capture of Darnah could extend ISIL’s control over Libya. He said the use of proxies such as Islamic Youth could enable ISIL to expand its influence far beyond Iraq and Syria. “Governments worldwide must realize that ISIS cannot be wished away or ignored, and that the movement is not territorially fixed,” the report said. “Rather, the Islamic State seems to be awakening many potential adherents in various corners of the world.”

Headline:  Algerian Police March on President’s Office

Algerian police tried to push their way into the president’s headquarters Wednesday in an unprecedented protest movement prompted by violence against security forces in the south. The whereabouts of the long-ailing president were unclear. The unrest in southern Algeria and protests in the capital come amid concerns that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika is too ill to rule Africa’s largest country, an ally in U.S. efforts against terrorism. Bouteflika, who helped bring stability to Algeria after a decade of bloodshed, has barely been seen in public since his re-election in April. In the second day of protests in Algiers, about 300 police officers marched to the president’s office, wearing their blue uniforms but apparently unarmed. Some tried to push their way past the front gate but were stopped by presidential guards. The president’s chief of staff, Ahmed Ouyahia, emerged to try to talk to protesters, but quickly went back inside after being met with boos and hisses. The police demanded to see the prime minister instead. They also sought the resignation of security chief Gen. Abdelghani Hamel, chanting “Hamel, Get Out!”

His legal wife, a French national, was said to have remained in France. The arrested couple will appear in court, while no mention was made of the way the children will be handled, or whether they will be returned to France.

Headline:    Turkey to citizens: joining Kobane fight not allowed

Turkey will not permit its citizens to fight ISIS militants alongside Kurds in the Syrian town of Kobane, a Turkish newspaper reported its prime minister as saying Wednesday. “We don’t want our citizens to fight in Syria and we are trying to stop those who illegally cross the border,” Hurriyet Daily News quoted Prime Minister Ahmed Davutoglu as telling the media during a press conference at the Interior Ministry Oct. 15. While Davutoglu expressed his “sorrow” for Turkish Kurdish citizens who were killed fighting ISIS in Kurdish-dominated Kobane, he added that his country’s citizens were not allowed to cross the border into Syria. “If any Syrian wants to go to Syria for fighting, the border gates are open for them, but even they themselves do not want to go,” he said, adding that around 300 members of the Kurdish Democratic Union Party (PYD) had laid down their arms in Syria and taken refuge in Turkey.

Shia rebels and suspected Sunni al-Qaeda militants have been engaged in heavy fighting in southern Yemen. Security officials and tribal sources said at least 10 people were killed in clashes around the town of Radaa in Bayda province late on Tuesday. The clashes around Radaa on Tuesday night erupted after Houthi fighters attempted to take control of areas surrounding the town. Dozens of families were forced to flee the violence. Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) has vowed to fight the Houthis in defence of Sunnis and last week it said it was behind a suicide bomb attack on a rally by Houthi supporters in Sanaa that killed 47 people. On Wednesday afternoon, the rebels were reported to have sent fighters towards the city of Ibb, a bastion of the jihadist group and its allies 150 km (90 miles) south of the capital.

Headline: Hong Kong Protests Swell After Video Shows Police Beating

Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said his government is ready to meet with student leaders next week to discuss “universal suffrage” as he seeks to end three weeks of protests. Leung said he invited an unidentified vice chancellor of a Hong Kong university to host the talks with the students who have rallied as many as 200,000 people to the streets to demand that China drop plans to vet candidates for the election of Leung’s successor in 2017. “Over the last few days, including this morning, through third-parties, we expressed the wish to the students that we wish to start the dialog to discuss universal suffrage as soon as we can,” Leung told reporters today. The government’s efforts to re-open a dialog came as public outrage over the alleged beating of a demonstrator by police yesterday led the ranks of the demonstrations to swell anew. While he offered talks, Leung also said that freely choosing candidates for chief executive would violate the Basic Law, a sort of constitution for the city, meaning he was taking a fundamental demand of the protesters off the table.

Headline: Radiation levels at Fukushima rise to record highs after typhoon

The amount of radioactive water near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant has risen to record levels after a typhoon passed through Japan last week, state media outlet NHK reported on Wednesday. Specifically, levels of the radioactive isotope cesium are now at 251,000 becquerels per liter, three times higher than previously-recorded levels. Cesium, which is highly soluble and can spread easily, is known to be capable of causing cancer. Meanwhile, other measurements also show remarkably high levels of tritium – another radioactive isotope of hydrogen. Samples from October 9 indicate that there are 150,000 becquerels of tritium per liter in the groundwater near Fukushima, according to Japan’s JIJI agency. Compared to levels recorded last week, that’s an increase of more than 10 times.

Officials at a school district in Texas shut schools on Thursday after they learned that two students traveled on the Cleveland-to-Dallas flight with Amber Joy Vinson, a nurse infected with Ebola. And in Ohio, schools were shut down after officials learned that a school employee may have later flown on the same plane. The superintendent of the Belton Independent School District, south of Waco, said that a student at Sparta Elementary School and a student at North Belton Middle School were on Frontier Airlines Flight 1143 on Monday. The superintendent, Susan Kincannon, said in a statement that officials had decided to shut the two schools plus a third, the Belton Early Childhood School, so they could thoroughly clean and disinfect the schools and the buses that served them this week. The two students were on the flight on Monday and then attended classes on Tuesday and Wednesday, the statement said. Though state and local health officials had cleared the children to return to school, their parents decided to keep them home for 21 days, the maximum incubation period of the virus.

Elizabeth public schools have issued a warning for parents after a case of enterovirus was reported at an elementary school. In a letter to parents on the school district’s website, school officials say the virus was reported at Juan Pablo Duarte-José Julián Martí School No. 28. “This is one child out of 26,000 kids,” school spokesman Donald Goncalves said. “That’s probably one more than what we want, obviously.” School officials say they don’t yet know if it is the D68 strain of the virus, which is the one causing severe respiratory issues in children infected across the country. Elizabeth began cleaning and disinfecting the elementary school and the entire fleet of buses. “We have been working alongside local health officials,” schools Superintendent Olga Hugelmeyer said in the letter. “With their help and your vigilance, we can ensure that we maintain a safe and healthy school community.” The student who contracted the virus has not been to school and is under observation. Goncalves said nurses are also keeping a close eye on all children at the school. “We really believe that we have a warm, safe, loving environment right now and that children are perfectly OK in the schools,” Goncalves told CBS 2’s Andrea Grymes. But some parents are not convinced. “I came to pick up my kids’ homework for the next two days because I don’t trust them being in school right now,” one mother said. Sakeyia Rainey said she nervously sent her two children to class Thursday morning after learning about the enterovirus case the night before. “Yes, I’m worried,” she said. “I’m very worried.”

Headline:  Mosquito-borne Chikungunya virus likely to reach Mexico- health ministry

Mexico is very likely to join the list of countries to register cases of the painful mosquito-borne viral disease chikungunya, a senior health ministry official said on Wednesday. Chikungunya is spread by two mosquito species, and is typically not fatal but can cause debilitating symptoms including fever, headache and severe joint pain lasting months. There is no current treatment for the virus, which was detected for the first time in the Americas late last year, and no licensed vaccine to prevent it. Given that the virus has already shown up in much of the Caribbean, Central America and the United States, it is also likely to reach Mexico, Pablo Kuri, the deputy health minister in charge of disease prevention, told Reuters. “It’s very probable that at some point, we’ll have confirmed cases of chikungunya,” he said, noting that six cases have already been detected, but those people had contracted the virus in the Caribbean and El Salvador. He said that Mexico is home to the mosquito species that carries the virus, adding to the likelihood of its arrival.

Headline:    Pakistani Christian loses appeal against death sentence for blasphemy

A Pakistani court upheld the death penalty on Thursday against a Christian woman accused of blasphemy, her lawyer said, in a case that drew global headlines after two prominent politicians who tried to help her were assassinated. In 2010, Asia Bibi, a mother of four, became the first woman to be sentenced to death under Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy law. She is alleged to have made derogatory remarks about Islam after neighbours objected to her drinking water from their glass because she was not Muslim. Bibi’s lawyer, Naeem Shakir, said his client had been involved in a dispute with her neighbours and that her accusers had contradicted themselves. Two witnesses allegedly involved in the incident did not appear in court, he said. A prayer leader did appear, saying he did not witness the original altercation, but that Bibi had confessed in front of him. “I was expecting the opposite decision,” Shakir said. “We will file an appeal to the Supreme Court of Pakistan in a few days.” But Gulam Mustafa, the lawyer for the complainant, said the court’s decision was correct. “Asia’s lawyer tried to prove that the case was registered on a personal enmity but he failed to prove that,” he said. After Bibi’s arrest in 2010, two top Pakistani politicians who sought to intervene on her behalf were gunned down, one by his own bodyguard.

Headline:  Israel: UK Palestine Vote Undermines Peace Prospects

Israel warned Tuesday that a vote by British parliament in favor of recognizing a Palestinian state risked undermining the prospects for peace. “Premature international recognition sends a troubling message to the Palestinian leadership that they can evade the tough choices that both sides have to make, and actually undermines the chances to reach a real peace,” said a statement from the Israeli foreign ministry. Late Monday British MPs voted 274 to 12 for a non-binding motion to “recognize the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel as a contribution to securing a negotiated two-state solution”. The remainder of the parliament’s 650 MPs abstained. The resolution was welcomed by the Palestinians.

Headline:     French FM: If peace talks prove impossible, we’ll recognize Palestinian state

France’s foreign minister said on Tuesday that Paris should recognize a Palestinian state only if doing so would help achieve peace, not as a symbolic gesture. However, if negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel fail, Paris “would not shirk its responsibilities” but would recognize the Palestinian state, the minister, Laurent Fabius, said in answer to a question in parliament. His remarks came a day after British lawmakers voted to recognize Palestine. Their vote will not alter government policy, but it does carry symbolic value as Palestinians pursue international recognition. “From the moment when we say that there are two states, there will be recognition of a Palestinian state. That goes without saying, it’s logical,” Fabius said. “The only question are the modalities and how to do it in the most efficient way. What we want is not something symbolic, but something that is useful for peace.” Like Britain, France does not classify Palestine as a state. But it says it could extend recognition if it believed doing so would help promote peace between the Palestinians and Israel.

Headline:     Abbas Threatens, Again, to Cut Ties With Israel

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has once again threatened to cut ties with Israel if his latest unilateral move at the United Nations (UN) fails. Speaking on Monday to reporters in Cairo, on the sidelines of the international donors’ conference on rebuilding Gaza, Abbas declared that his talks with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry did not bear fruit and that the PA intends move forward with its plan to turn to the UN Security Council to set a deadline for Israel to “end the occupation”. “If all efforts fail, we will end relations with Israel and I will tell Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, ‘Come and take over’. However, I will not dismantle the Palestinian Authority and I will submit a request to join all the organizations belonging to the UN,” he declared. The draft resolution that Abbas plans to submit to the Security Council will reportedly call for Israel to “end the occupation” by November of 2016.

Headline:     UN chief visits rocket-battered Israeli south

The UN’s top official on Tuesday toured rocket-battered Israeli villages near Gaza and expressed “shock” after entering a Hamas attack tunnel with IDF commanders. I was shocked by the tunnels used for the infiltration of terrorists,” Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said in a press conference held after the tour of the tunnel. He was accompanied by IDF Maj. Gen. Noam Tivon and other senior officers and officials. “No one needs live under the constant threat and fear of rockets and tunnels digging underground,” said Ban. He also met with residents of Kibbutz Nirim, including the family of four-year-old Daniel Tragerman, who was killed in an August 22 mortar attack by Hamas on the village. “He was just a little boy. What has he done wrong?” Ban asked in a speech following the encounter. Tragerman’s parents, Gila and Doron, sent a letter to the secretary general last month urging him to speak out against war crimes committed by Hamas. The UN chief arrived in Israel on Monday and has been on a multi-day tour of the region, including a brief visit to the Gaza Strip on Tuesday.

Headline:     Border Policeman Injured in Bomb Attack at Rachel’s Tomb

A border policeman was lightly injured in his leg, apparently after Arab rioters hurled an explosive device at Israeli security forces at the Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem. The incident began when some 40 rioters began attacking border police stationed at the holy site to protect Jewish visitors, throwing rocks and molotov cocktails at them. Border police responded by advancing on the rioters in an attempt to disperse them. At that point the improvised explosive device was launched at troops, who responded with riot-control measures. Security forces have begun an investigation to track down the terrorist responsible for throwing the bomb. Palestinian Arab terrorists regularly attack Rachel’s Tomb, which is believed to be the burial place of the Biblical Matriarch Rachel. It comes amid renewed violence by Arabs against Jews in Jerusalem, particularly on the Temple Mount – Judaism’s holiest site – as well as against the capital’s light rail system.

In a rare visit to the Bekaa apparently to boost morale, Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah vowed to defeat terrorist groups while warning Israel that he stood ready for any confrontation despite the battle against extremists. “Victory will be the ally of the mujahedeen in their fight against takfiri and terrorist groups the same way it was their ally in the confrontation against the Israeli enemy,” Nasrallah said in remarks published Tuesday. Addressing a number of Hezbollah cadres in the Bekaa, Nasrallah also sent a strong message to Israel that his fighters were prepared for any new aggression on Lebanon. “To all those concerned, we tell them that despite the rapid changes in the region, and despite the U.S.-led international coalition – or the ‘media alliance’ against ISIS – the resistance is not weak and will not weaken,” he said. “Rather, the resistance is present, strong and ready to confront and repel any [Israeli] aggression.”

Saudi border guards have reportedly clashed with Yemeni tribesmen in Yemen’s northwestern province of Sa’ada. According to a report published on the Arabic-language news website, Yemen Now, the clashes broke out on Tuesday in Munbeh region of the province as Saudi guards sought to install checkpoints on the Yemeni side of the border. There were no immediate reports of casualties. Local Yemeni sources have expressed concern that the clashes might be an excuse by Saudis to open a new war front against Yemen’s Shia Ansarullah movement. The movement has been at odds with Riyadh, which has been in control of the Yemeni provinces of Asir, Najran and Jizan since the 1930s.

Thirty students were arrested during clashes between students and security forces at Alexandria University’s engineering faculty, according to an interior ministry statement on Tuesday. One student was injured, officials told Al-Ahram’s Arabic news website, while other reports say more were hurt in the clashes. Security forces stormed the university at the request of the university’s president, after hundreds protested for the release of their colleagues who were detained earlier in the week. Police fired teargas to disperse the protests; students claim they fired birdshot and ammunition. The students damaged the university’s gates and threw rocks at the security forces, according to the interior ministry’s statement.

At least 10 Syrian army soldiers, including an officer, were killed in clashes with ISIS fighters Tuesday in a rare ground confrontation between the two sides in the eastern Deir al-Zor province, an activist group said. The clashes took place on Huwiejat Sakr, a small island in the Euphrates River located just southeast of Deir al-Zor city, according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. It is close to a government-controlled military air base, the last major outpost held by the Syrian army in the province. “Violent clashes have been ongoing since the morning between ISIS and an allied Islamist brigade on the one hand, and regime forces on the other,” said Rami Abdulrahman who runs the Observatory.

Iraq Headline:  ISIL gets set: ‘Up to 10,000 terrorists are ready to attack Baghdad’

Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant is believed to be preparing a massive assault on Baghdad. Officials said the Iraqi intelligence community, backed by help from the United States, detected ISIL preparations for an invasion of Baghdad over the next few months. The officials said ISIL was amassing thousands of fighters in towns around the capital while infiltrating the city itself. “Up to 10,000 terrorists are ready to attack Baghdad,” Anbar provisional council president Sabah Karhout said. Officials confirmed reports that ISIL reached suburbs of Baghdad, including Abu Ghraib. They said the collapse of the Iraq Army and security forces in Anbar would enable ISIL to organize a massive assault on Baghdad. “ISIL is building a network throughout Baghdad, particularly in the Shi’ite districts,” an official said. “The idea is for a coordinated attack within and outside the city.” ISIL was approaching Baghdad through a range of means. Officials said ISIL was using vehicles, boats and tunnels to reach the city. On Oct. 12, the Iraq Army reported destroying two ISIL boats on the Euphrates River near Baghdad. The army said its 60th Brigade also stopped two ISIL vehicles in Mahasna west of Baghdad. “Many ISIL elements were killed along the outskirts of Baghdad,” Iraqi spokesman Brig. Gen. Saad Maan said. The United States, with 1,600 troops in Iraq, has acknowledged the ISIL threat. A recent attack by ISIL was said to have targeted Baghdad International Airport, foiled by two U.S. Army AH-64 Apache attack helicopters.

Iraq Headline: Amnesty says Iraqi Shiites retaliating against Sunnis

Iraq’s Shiite militias have abducted and killed “scores” of Sunni civilians in retaliation for the onslaught by the Sunni militant Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant ( ISIL group), Amnesty International said Tuesday, claiming that the attacks are supported by the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. The Shiite militiamen number in the tens of thousands and wear military uniforms but operate outside any legal framework and without any official oversight, Amnesty said. Moreover, they are not prosecuted for the crimes, the London-based watchdog warned in its new report, entitled “Absolute Impunity: Militia Rule in Iraq.” The accusations were based on interviews with families and survivors who claimed that members of four prominent Iraqi Shiite militias — Asaib Ahl al-Haq, the Badr Brigades, the Mahdi Army, and Ketaeb Hizbollah — were behind many abductions and killings of Sunnis in the country. The report underscores a possible new layer in the complex violence that has gripped Iraq since the ISIL group’s lightening offensive this summer. The Sunni militants seized large swaths of territory in Iraq and Syria, carving out a self-styled caliphate, imposing strict Islamic law and expelling hundreds of thousands of Iraqis of religious and other minorities from their homes.

Headline: Obama, foreign military chiefs, to thrash out Islamic State plans

President Barack Obama will hash out a strategy to counter Islamic State with military leaders from some 20 countries including Turkey and Saudi Arabia on Tuesday amid growing pressure for the U.S.-led coalition to do more to stop the militants’ advance. As the commanders gathered, the U.S. military announced that U.S. and Saudi planes had carried out 21 airstrikes in the last two days near the contested Syrian border town of Kobani, an unusually large number of attacks on one of the flashpoints of the campaign. U.S. Central Command said the strikes on the militants’ staging areas, compounds and armed vehicles, were meant to hit supply lines and stop reinforcements. It said the situation was fluid but the Kurdish militia was “continuing to hold out.” Obama was due to address the meeting of coalition military chiefs, led by General Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at Andrews Air Force Base outside Washington at 3 p.m. EDT. The meeting was “part of ongoing efforts to build the coalition and integrate the capabilities of each country into the broader strategy,” said Alistair Baskey, spokesman for the White House National Security Council. Colonel Ed Thomas, Dempsey’s spokesman, said no major policy decisions were expected, adding: “It’s about coming together in person to discuss the vision, the challenges, the way ahead.”

A few thousand protesters clashed with police on Tuesday outside the Ukrainian parliament, throwing stones and smoke bombs and firing with air guns through the building’s windows. A Reuters photographer said the protesters, many of whom were masked and armed with batons or metal chains, massed outside the main entrance of the building and began bombarding it with projectiles. Parliamentary deputies, who had just passed anti-corruption laws and voted in a new defense minister in what was the last day of the current parliament before an election on Oct. 26, went into recess because of the disorder outside. It was not immediately clear what the demands of the protesters were. Several of them declined to say what political forces they represented.

Headline:   Iran says Saudi comments may damage ties

Iran’s Foreign Ministry warned Saudi Arabia on Tuesday that comments calling it “part of the problem” in the Middle East may damage diplomatic ties, the country’s state news agency reported. Saudi Arabia, a Sunni powerhouse, and Iran, the dominant Shiite force in the Middle East, long have viewed each other with suspicion. However the two countries have recently tried to get closer ties through bilateral meetings and visits. On Monday, Saudi Foreign Minister Saud al-Faisal accused Tehran of having forces inside Syria, Iraq and Yemen, and insisted that Iran is “part of the problem” in trying to defuse a myriad of Mideast crises. Reacting to al-Faisal, Iran’s IRNA news agency quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian as saying: “The remark, if the report carried it precisely, is in contradiction with diplomatic negotiators between the two countries.”

Headline:  Libya jihadists aim for airports

A self-declared government set up by an armed group that seized the Libyan capital in August has taken over the websites of the state administration and the national oil company, adding to confusion over who is running the country. With Libya’s official government and parliament now operating from towns hundreds of miles east of Tripoli, the armed group, from the western city of Misrata, that has seized ministry buildings in the capital now controls their websites. The website of Prime Minister Abdullah Thinni – who now sits with his cabinet in the eastern city of Bayda – shows the picture of the man the Misrata rebels have declared as prime minister, Omar al-Hasi, and lists the names of his team. The group, which calls itself the National Salvation government, has also taken over the website of the National Oil Corp. Next to tender offers, the website features the picture of the self-declared government’s oil minister. Libya’s neighbours and Western powers fear the conflict between the two rival governments could drag the OPEC member into civil war.

Headline:  Algerian police make rare protest in capital

Hundreds of Algeria’s policemen set to be deployed to a riot-torn southern city staged a protest march through the capital on Tuesday. The country’s police have not been known to demonstrate before and the unprecedented march comes at a delicate time for this key U.S. ally in the war against terror, with its long ruling president rarely seen and rumored to be ill. The protesters were showing their solidarity for their colleagues in the southern oasis city Ghardaia to end the attacks on security forces in the area that is the scene of constant riots, Djilali Boudalia, a police spokesman, told the state news agency. Thousands of police have been sent to Ghardaia, some 500 kilometers south of Algiers, to stop the constant clashes between the rival Berber and Arab communities there. About a dozen people have been killed and many shops burned in the riots that have flared since December as the communities compete for scarce jobs and housing there. Two people were killed in clashes Monday and dozens of police wounded.

Headline:   PKK commander arrested in Turkey after joining Kobane fight

Turkish F-16 and F-4 warplanes have bombed Kurdish PKK rebel targets near the Iraqi border, as their ceasefire comes under increasing strain. The air strikes on Daglica were in response to PKK shelling of a military outpost, the armed forces said. Both sides have been observing a truce and it is the first major air raid on the PKK since March 2013. Kurds are furious at Turkey’s inaction as Islamic State (IS) militants attack the Syrian border town of Kobane. Fighters from the PKK (Kurdistan Workers’ Party) have been aiding Kurdish YPG militia in Kobane and Turkey has refused to help supply its long-standing enemy with weapons or allow Kurdish fighters to enter Syria. Two PKK commanders wounded in fighting were arrested by Turkish authorities when they arrived for treatment in hospital in south-eastern Turkey, Anatolia news agency reported.

Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword.  Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions)   Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

Headline: Protesters burn state government buildings in Guerrero, Mexico over student disappearances

Protesters set fire to government buildings in Mexico’s Guerrero state on Monday to express outrage over the alleged police involvement in the disappearance and suspected murder of 43 college students. Protests have been ongoing since the students disappeared Sept. 26, but Monday’s protest marked a violent turn in the state capital, Chilpancingo. Enraged students, teachers and family members issued a demand to state Governor Angel Aguirre to release the students or explain what happened to them within 24 hours. Investigators said that forensic examinations are still being conducted on the charred remains of 28 corpses buried in shallow graves. The graves were found based on a tip provided by alleged assassins with the Guerreros Unidos gang who confessed to working with police to attack the students. Contradicting federal prosecutors’ statements regarding the investigation, Aguirre told reporters over the weekend “I have confidence that we’ll find [the students] alive,” claiming that some of the graves were not those of the students but of other victims “of organized crime.”

Yemen’s Ansarullah fighters, also known as Houthis, have captured the strategic Red Sea city of Hudeida, officials say. Security officials said on Tuesday that the Ansarullah revolutionaries entered the city, 226 kilometers (140 miles) west of the capital Sana’a, taking over its air and seaport. They are said to have faced little resistance. Both military and Houthi sources confirmed that Ansarullah fighters have been deployed across the main roads in the city. The takeover of Hudeida, home to Yemen’s second most important port, comes just weeks after the Ansarullah fighters seized the capital.

Headline: Hong Kong police, protesters in tense standoff outside gov’t headquarters

Pro-democracy activists clashed with police and barricaded a tunnel near Hong Kong’s government headquarters late Tuesday, expanding their protest zone again after being cleared out of some other streets in the latest escalation of tensions in a weekslong political crisis. The demonstrators blocked the underpass with tires, metal and plastic safety barriers and concrete slabs taken from drainage ditches. Earlier, hundreds of police wearing helmets and holding shields and batons scuffled with the protesters in a brief, tense standoff, according to local television news. The student-led protesters are now in their third week of occupying key roads and streets in Hong Kong’s business district. Positions on both sides have been hardening since the government called off negotiations last week. It was not immediately clear what caused Tuesday night’s standoff, but local news reports said it began when police arrested a protester. That angered some demonstrators, who then tried to take over the tunnel in front of the government headquarters near the entrance to the office of the city’s leader. The reports said police sent in reinforcements and used pepper spray to try to disperse the protesters but failed and retreated, leaving the tunnel in the hands of an even bigger crowd of protesters.

Headline: WHO: W. African Ebola Rate Underreported

The number of cases in the Ebola outbreak has risen to nearly 9,000, with the number of dead climbing to nearly 4,500, as the World Health Organization (WHO) warned Tuesday that there could be up to 10,000 new cases a week in two months. For the last four weeks, there’s been about 1,000 new cases per week – including suspected, confirmed and probable cases, WHO assistant director-general Dr. Bruce Aylward said, adding that the U.N. health agency is aiming to get 70 percent of cases isolated within two months to reverse the outbreak. WHO increased its Ebola death toll tally to 4,447 people on Tuesday, nearly all of them in West Africa, from 8,914 cases. The death rate has risen to 70 percent— previously the WHO estimated the death rate at around 50 percent. Aylward said the 70 percent death rate was “a high mortality disease” in any circumstance and that the U.N. health agency was still focused on trying to get sick people isolated and provide treatment as early as possible.

Headline: Ebola, Enterovirus, Now The Plague?

It’s been a bad couple of months for humans. Ebola is raging in Africa and has made its way to the United States, and Enterovirus D-68 has sickened children across the country, causing some deaths. Now comes word of the plague being found in fleas in Arizona. “Fleas collected near Flagstaff have tested positive for the plague, according to officials with the Coconino County Public Health Services District,” reports ABC 15 in Flagstaff. The plague is not uncommon to the area, but it is transferable to humans through bites from infected animals, including fleas. Symptoms generally manifest themselves within two to six days after exposure and include “fever, chills, headache, weakness, muscle pain and swollen lymph glands in the groin, armpits or limbs.”

Headline: Uganda: two new suspected Marburg cases put in isolation – second outbreak forming?

Two new suspect cases of Marburg have been put in isolation at the national referral hospital Mulago. They did not have any contact with the health worker who died of Marburg on September 28th, which could suggest a 2nd outbreak may be festering. Three other suspected cases are in isolation camps in Ibanda and Entebbe and preliminary tests on them have so far turned out negative. Test will be re-administered. The Marburg virus is similar to the Ebola virus in more ways than one. They both cause illnesses marked by severe bleeding (haemorrhage), organ failure and, in many cases, death. The Marburg virus is a genetically unique zoonotic (transmissible from animal to man) RNA virus of the filovirus family. The five species of Ebola virus are the only other known members of the filovirus family. The reservoir host of Marburg virus is the African fruit bat which, when infected with the virus, do not to show obvious signs of illness. Although, it is not clearly known of how the Marburg virus first got transmitted from its animal host to humans, it was discovered that in the two cases in Uganda in 2008, unprotected contact with infected bat faeces or aerosols were the most likely routes of infection. In some other outbreaks, persons who have handled infected non-human primates or have come in direct contact with their fluids or cell cultures have become infected. As soon as infection occurs, it leads to contracting the deadly Marburg Haemorrhagic Fever which has a high mortality.

Headline:     Sweden close to being cashless society: report

Four out of five purchases in Sweden are paid electronically or by debit card and with the development of cheaper technology the trend is moving towards a fully cash free society, according to a new report. “Sweden and the rest of Scandinavia leads the world in terms of cashless trading,” said Bengt Nilervall at the Swedish Federation of Trade (Svensk Handel). Swedes use their debit and credit cards almost every day – an average of 260 transactions per person per year. The picture is very different in southern Europe. In Italy, for example, three-quarters of all consumer purchases are still paid for in cash. “That is due to the low confidence in the authorities and the banking system,” said Niklas Arvidsson, an associate professor of industrial dynamics. Arvidsson argued that Sweden could become completely cash free but predicts that this development is unlikely until at least 2030.

A powerful storm has swept across the southern US, killing at least two people and injuring several others. Tornadoes, high winds, lightning, hail and heavy rain left a trail of destruction from Texas to Alabama. In Arkansas, a tornado that touched down about 150 miles south-west of Little Rock killed a man and injured his wife when their home was destroyed. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal declared a state of emergency on Monday as thousands were left without power. Two tornadoes also hit Missouri, toppling trees and causing some roof damage, according to the National Weather Service. In Alabama, a tree crushed a mobile home just north of Birmingham, killing a 75-year-old woman and injuring her husband, said the county coroner. The extreme weather was expected to continue on Tuesday, with an estimated 36 million people in its path. The Storm Prediction Center said the cities at risk included Memphis, Nashville, Houston, Indianapolis, New Orleans and St Louis.

Israeli Police Forces vs. Temple Mount Rioters

Headline:     Netanyahu: Palestinian rioters fueling Temple Mount unrest

Police trapped dozens of Arab rioters at the al-Aksa mosque for hours Monday after the rioters collected rocks, fireworks, and firebombs in order to confront police and disturb Jewish visitors to the site. The rioters set up barricades at the entrance to the al-Aksa mosque. Police said they removed the barricades while under assault of a barrage of rocks and managed to push the rioters inside the mosque and lock them inside. Four suspects were arrested. Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich said many of the rioters were Hamas and Islamic Jihad members. Arab protesters accused Israel of being a “terror state” and of harming the mosque. United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon complained about Israel’s handling of the situation on the Mount in statements he made in Ramallah and at a press conference with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. “I am deeply concerned by repeated provocations at the Holy Sites in Jerusalem,” the secretary-general said. “These only inflame tensions and must stop.” Netanyahu used the UN chief’s statement as an opportunity to educate him and the world about what has been going on at the Temple Mount. “I’m committed and Israel is committed to maintaining the status quo exactly as it’s been for many decades,” he said. “What we’re seeing are Palestinian extremists who are instigating violence through incitement. The incitement is spread by false and baseless rumors that we are threatening the Muslim holy places. Nothing could be further from the truth.”

Headline:      Netanyahu Slams Ban Ki-Moon’s ‘Occupation’ Remarks

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu fired at UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon’s insistence that the “occupation” justified Hamas’s launching over 3,600 rockets on Israeli civilians on Monday, in a series of remarks before a private meeting with the international figure. Netanyahu began by noting that the entire concept of an “occupation” in Gaza has been made moot after the 2005 Disengagement. “The root cause of the violence that burst from Gaza is not Israel’s occupation in Gaza, for a simple reason: Israel doesn’t occupy Gaza,” Netanyahu explained. “Israel left Gaza to the very last centimeter, to the very last inch. We uprooted all the settlements and vacated all the settlers. So there is no Israeli occupation of Gaza.” Netanyahu then pointed out that Ban justified Hamas’s rocket barrage despite the fact that it used the UN’s own facilities to break international law. “The root cause of this summer’s outburst of violence was Hamas’ rocketing of Israeli cities, and these rocket attacks often exploited UN neutrality, using UN facilities and UN schools as part of the Hamas machine of terror,” he thundered. “And when rockets were discovered inside UN schools, some UN officials handed them back to Hamas – that very same Hamas that was rocketing Israeli cities and Israeli civilians.” The Prime Minister then reiterated the fact that Hamas is a terror group dedicated to genocide against Jews.

Russia announced on Sunday that it will back Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s plan to ask the United Nations to impose a deadline for Israel to withdraw from Judea and Samaria. “I cannot see any reasons to cavil about this text, or about the Palestinian people’s wish to say once again ‘let’s have a look at this situation, in the UN framework,’” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said, according to the RIA Novosti news agency. “So we say [to the Palestinians], if you find one option or another suitable, then we will support you as friends. You know better what you need and how to achieve it. We think that the Palestinian case is fair, meaning that people have a right to self-determination, up to establishing their state,” Bogdanov told journalists, according to the report. Abbas’s move, which he plans to carry out through a resolution at the UN Security Council, is a unilateral move which is in direct violation of the Oslo Accords.

Headline:      British lawmakers voted on Monday to recognise Palestine as a state

British lawmakers voted in favour of recognising Palestine as a state on Monday in a move that will not alter the government’s stance on the issue, but that carries symbolic value for Palestinians in their pursuit of statehood. Lawmakers in Britain’s lower house of parliament voted by 274 to 12 to pass a non-binding motion stating: “That this House believes that the Government should recognise the state of Palestine alongside the state of Israel as a contribution to securing a negotiated two-state solution.” Britain does not classify Palestine as a state, but says it could do so at any time if it believed it would help peace efforts between the Palestinians and Israel. Government ministers were told to abstain and the non-binding vote will not force Britain to recognise a Palestinian state.

Headline:      Rebuilding Gaza: Donors ‘pledge $5.4bn’ at Cairo summit

International donors have pledged $5.4bn (£3.4bn) to help Gaza’s reconstruction at a conference in Cairo, Norway’s foreign minister says. The total, which includes $212m (£132m) from the US and $1bn (£622m) from Qatar, exceeds the sum requested. The Palestinian Authority had appealed for $4bn (£2.5bn) to rebuild Gaza. At least 100,000 Gazans lost their homes in the 50-day conflict between Israel and Hamas, and much of the territory’s infrastructure was damaged. Envoys from dozens of countries have been attending the Cairo conference, which is hosted by Egypt’s President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi. “The participants pledged approximately $5.4bn,” Norway’s Boerge Brende was quoted as saying by Egyptian state television. Earlier the Palestinian and Egyptian presidents called on Israel to commit to a long-term peace initiative.

Headline:  Saudi FM: ‘Iranians in Syria are Occupiers’

On Monday, Saudi Arabian Foreign Minister Prince Saud al-Faisal stated that “Iranian forces in Syria are occupying forces,” and that Iran must “pull its forces from Syria.” Prince al-Faisal made his statement at a joint press conference in the Saudi Arabian Red Sea city of Jeddah with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Al-Faisal’s legal designation of Iran as an “occupying force” in Syria could have significant war crimes implications for Iran since, under such a “occupying force” definition, Iran could be held legally responsible for the war crimes and genocide of Assad’s chlorine chemical attacks on Syrian Sunni civilians. Prince al-Faisal also accused Iran of instigating many other conflicts in the Middle East when he said, “In many conflicts, Iran is part of the problem, not the solution.” Specifically, in Syria, he accused Tehran of sending to troops that are “fighting Syrians.” And he added, “If Iran wants to be part of the solution in Syria, it has to pull its forces from Syria. The same applies elsewhere, whether in Yemen or Iraq.”

Headline:  Egypt Police Storm 2 Universities Over Protests

Egyptian police backed by armored vehicles stormed the campuses of at least two prominent Egyptian universities to quell anti-government protests by students, officials and a student spokesman said Sunday. Sunday’s largest rallies took place at Cairo and the Islamist al-Azhar universities, where students smashed a number of newly installed metal detectors at campus gates. Ahead of the academic year which began Saturday, authorities intensified security measures at universities nationwide to prevent the resurgence of student protests organized largely by supporters of toppled Islamist President Mohammed Morsi, overthrown last year by the military after massive protests against him. Last year, at least 16 students were killed and hundreds were arrested during protests that regularly descended into violence. This year, government officials warned that renewed protests would not be tolerated on campuses, enacting new regulations curbing student activities. Authorities hired a private security firm to search students, as well as install metal detectors and cameras around campuses. New fortified walls were built and troops were permanently deployed outside campuses. Student protest spokesman Youssef Salhen said protesters clashed briefly with police Sunday outside of al-Azhar University. Salhen said students attacked the newly installed metal detectors, which he described as symbols of new “repressive measures” against the student protest movement. He said tightening restrictions on student activities and protests will not put a dent into their rallies against the authorities.

Syria Headline:   Syria’s air force ramps up strikes in west as US hits east

Syria’s air force carried out strikes against rebels at more than double its usual rate on Monday, according to a monitoring group, ramping up its offensive near the capital while Washington strikes so-called Islamic State (ISIL) fighters far away. The intensified air strikes by President Bashar al-Assad’s government will add to the fear among Assad’s opponents that he is taking advantage of the US strikes to crush other foes, including the “moderate opposition” that Washington backs. The United States says it does not want to help Assad’s government despite bombing ISIL, the most powerful group fighting against Damascus in a three year civil war. Washington aims to help arm moderates to fight against both Assad and the ISIL. But within days of the start of US air strikes in Syria last month, Assad’s government stepped up the tempo of its own air campaign against rebels closer to the capital Damascus.

Syria Headline:  Report cites evidence ISIL used chemical weapons in Kobane assault

Activists say Kurdish fighters have been able to halt the advance of the Islamic State extremist group in the Syrian border town of Kobani, where the U.S.-led coalition has been carrying out airstrikes for more than two weeks. The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says the militants have not been able to advance since Friday but are sending in reinforcements. Farhad Shami, a Kurdish activist in Kobani reached by phone from Beirut, says the town was “relatively quiet” on Sunday apart from sniper fire. He said Islamic State fighters launched an offensive south of the town Saturday but were repelled and lost many fighters. Rami Abdurrahman, the Observatory’s chief, said 36 jihadi fighters were killed in Kobani on Saturday. The jihadists control more than a third of the town. Then on Monday, an Islamic State suicide bomber detonated a truck laden with explosives in the northern part of the besieged Kurdish town of Kobani, near the Turkish border crossing with Syria, a monitoring group and Kurdish sources said. The attack took place about 2 km north of Kobani, which has been the scene of heavy clashes between Kurdish forces and Islamic State fighters, who have tightened their grip on the city, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and Kurdish officials said.

A source from Kobani told BasNews that earlier today [October 13] IS insurgents exploded a car bomb adjacent to a grocery market in Kobani and exploded another near the Rashad Mosque. According to the source, IS insurgents also exploded two other car bombs in the east of Kobani and another close to the center of the city. Two car bombs targeted the western and southern parts of Kobani although the extent of the damage caused by these attacks is yet to be ascertained. The source revealed that clashes in and around the city between IS militants and Kurdish fighters continue and the advance of Kurdish fighters has re-taken control of some areas previously held by IS insurgents. The source also stated that although Islamic State are attacking Kurdish fighters from the south of the city, the YPG continues to defend the city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has revealed that aerial attacks conducted by the international coalition have hit five IS positions in the southern areas of Kobani, taking out a substantial amount of heavy weaponry.

Syria Headline:   ISIL attacks Syria’s Hasakah

Clashes broke out between militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIL) and the Syrian regime’s forces near Mount Abdulaziz in the western countryside of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, on Monday morning. Local activists told ARA News that clashes took place following IS attacks on the villages of Makhrum, al-Hara and Sodat Abd in the coutryside of Hasakah, which are held by the pro-Assad militia of National Defence Army. The same sources asserted that the three villages are close to the regime regarding the number of army recruits and they show aggression to IS proponents, following several incidents which claimed lives of a number of pro-Assad gunmen at secutiry checkpoints. Meanwhile, clashes moved to east of Geweran neighbourhood (in southern Hasaka) close to Red Villas area, where Kurdish fighters of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) are based. Based on the same sources, the area was targeted by three missiles; two close to the YPG-held cemeteries checkpoint in Geweran while the third hit the Red Villas’ security checkpoint. According to the YPG, IS militants have launched these attacks on Sunday. Dozens of mortars fell close to YPG’s headquarters and the newly established chackpoint of Aziziya in Hasakah, which caused a state of panic in the city’s northern neighbourhoods such as al-Mifti and al-Salhiya.

Iraq Headline:  Iraq urges U.S. to send ground troops as ISIS jihadists close in on Baghdad

Iraq Headline: Iraqi FM says no request for foreign boots to fight ISIL

Iraqi officials issued a desperate plea Saturday night for America to provide ground troops, as heavily armed ISIS jihadists came within striking distance of Baghdad. Amid reports that Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham forces have advanced as far as Abu Ghraib, a town that is effectively a suburb of Baghdad, a senior local governor claimed that up to 10,000 fighters from the movement were now poised to assault the capital. The warning came from Sabah Al-Karhout, the president of the provisional council of Anbar Province, the vast desert region to the west of Baghdad that has now largely fallen under ISIS control. The province’s two main cities, Fallujah and Ramadi, were once known as “the graveyard of the Americans,” and the idea of returning there will not be welcomed by the Pentagon. But were the province to fall completely into militant hands, it would give ISIS a perfect springboard from which to mount an all-out assault on Baghdad, where a team of about 1,500 U.S. troops is already acting as mentors to the beleaguered Iraqi army. Iraqi government officials claim that while international attention has been focused in recent weeks on the Syrian town of Kobane on the Turkish border – where Kurdish fighters are still battling to keep advancing ISIS gunmen at bay – Anbar province has been on the verge of collapse. Government forces in the provincial capital Ramadi are still holding out against the ISIS offensive. But U.S. officials yesterday warned that the city was in a “tenuous” position. The surge of jihadi activity has also led to speculation that the group’s operation in Kobane was part of an elaborate decoy mission orchestrated by Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi, the ISIS “caliph.” Observers point out that while the capture of Kobane would not greatly increase ISIS’s military clout, the capture of Ramadi or other cities in Anbar would be catastrophic both for the Iraqi government and Western hopes of attempting to contain the group.

Iraq Headline:  Iraq pulls troops from ISIS-held Heet

Militants with the Islamic State group on Monday captured a military training camp in western Iraq, inching closer to full control of the restive Anbar province. The camp, near the town of Hit that fell to the insurgents earlier this month, was overrun in the morning hours after clashes with Iraqi soldiers who were forced to abandon the camp and withdraw from the area, two Anbar officials told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media. Town residents confirmed the camp’s fall, speaking to the AP also on condition of anonymity, fearing for their own safety.

Iraq Headline: Thirty killed in three bombings in Shi’ite parts of Baghdad

Iraq Headline: ISIS attack on Baghdad Airport thwarted by US helicopters says US General Dempsey

Three bombs exploded in Shi’ite parts of Baghdad on Monday, killing 30 people, police and medical officials said, continuing a wave of attacks targeting Iraq’s majority religious group. Baghdad’s largest Shi’ite neighbourhood, Sadr City, was rocked by two blasts: a bomb in the late afternoon that killed six people near a marketplace, and a car bomb at a police checkpoint that killed 16 people and wounded 30, according to medical and police officials. In Kahdimiya, in western Baghdad, a car bomb killed eight civilians and wounded 21 others at the main checkpoint to the district, police and medical officials said. The death toll rose from an initial figure officials gave of 22. There was no claim for the bombings, but the Shi’ite-government has been at war with Islamic State across central and western Iraq.

Kurdish Headline: Triple bombing in Iraq kills 26 Kurds

A triple suicide bombing killed 26 Kurdish security forces northeast of Baghdad on Sunday and a roadside bomb killed the police chief of the western Anbar province, dealing major blows to Iraqi security forces struggling to combat the Islamic State extremist group. The triple attack took place in Qara Tappah, in the ethnically and communally mixed Diyala province, according to an official from the Kurdish Asayish security forces. He said the first bomber detonated an explosives vest at the gateway to a security compound that also houses the office of a main Kurdish political party. Minutes later, two suicide bombers plowed cars filled with explosives into the compound, causing heavy damage. At least 60 people were wounded in the attack. The Islamic State extremist group claimed the attack, saying it was carried out by three non-Iraqi jihadists. The authenticity of the online statement could not be independently verified, but it was posted on a Twitter account frequently used by the militant group. The group has seized some towns in the volatile Diyala province and has clashed with Kurdish forces there. Hospital officials confirmed the casualties. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media.

Kurdish Headline: Iraqi Kurds Urge Turkey To Let Volunteers Through To Defend Kobani

A top official of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdish region is calling on Turkey to let volunteer fighters through to the besieged Syrian city of Kobani, where Syrian Kurds are waging a desperate battle against Islamic State (IS) militants. Speaking on a visit to RFE/RL in Prague on October 13, Falah Mustafa, the foreign minister of the Kurdish regional government (KRG), said Ankara should heed calls from the international community to help the city, which has been under siege for almost four weeks. “It’s a moral responsibility for all of us to move in order to help the besieged [city of] Kobani,” Mustafa said. “We hope that there would be an understanding by Turkey to the calls from the international community and to the needs of these people who have proven to be bravely fighting the terrorists throughout this period, from the day they have been besieged.” He said Ankara should establish a corridor between its border checkpoint of Mursitpinar and Kobani, whose northern edge is less than a kilometer from the Turkish frontier. “We are not asking for the impossible,” Mustafa said. “For a corridor to be opened for those who are ready to go and join [the fighters in Kobani], because they need weapons, they need ammunition, they need medical assistance, and they need foodstuffs.

Headline:  ISIS magazine shows its flag flying over Vatican

The black flag of Islamic militant group ISIS is shown flying above St. Peter’s Square on the cover of the group’s magazine Dabiq, which called in its latest issue for a war against the Catholic Church. With the headline The Failed Crusade, the photo-shopped cover of Dabiq caps new threats against Rome and the Vatican as well as forces led by the United States in a bombing campaign in Iraq and Syria against ISIS militants. It threatens to “conquer” Rome and “break your crosses,” referring to the symbol of Christianity.
The group has previously suggested that the fight is about religion and western forces are attacking the Islamic faith rather than the militants – a modern version of the medieval Crusades that pitted the Roman Catholic Christians of the day against Islam. The article in Dabiq – named for a town in northern Syria – also urged faithful Muslims to attack and kill “every Crusader possible” and added that “it is lawful to kidnap the women of the infidels and use them as sex slaves”. Last month, security officials said that they had stepped up security at the Vatican following threats by ISIS, which wants to establish an Islamic Caliphate. This marked the fourth issue of Dabiq, which is published in English.

Headline: Shelling heard near Ukraine’s Donetsk airport

Artillery fire has been reported between pro-Russian forces and the Ukrainian army near the Donetsk airport in the country’s war-torn east. The airport, which saw artillery duel on Sunday, has been the center of intense fighting that has continued despite a shaky truce between the two sides signed on September 5. Pro-Russian forces are seeking to retake the airport, which is considered as the Ukrainian government’s last outpost in the areas controlled by the pro-Russians. Meanwhile, residents of Donetsk say the flashpoint city is shelled daily. Pro-Russians insist that they have been sticking to the ceasefire, and only respond to incoming fire. But Kiev says its troops have repelled daily raids on their airport positions. This comes as Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has announced plans to meet his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in the Italian city of Milan on Friday.

Headline: Sudan restates claim to disputed territory with Egypt

Egyptian-Sudanese relations are currently witnessing a silent confusion after Khartoum approved an earlier decision to declare the disputed area of Halayeb and Shalateen, on the borders of the two countries, an electoral district for both the parliamentary and presidential elections at the beginning of 2015. Cairo is also preparing to conduct parliamentary elections with the participation of the same electoral district at the end of this year, and considers this area to be an integral part of Egyptian territory, according to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry. This creates further complications, especially with the increasing demands from political parties in Egypt that Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi act quickly to resolve the matter before the Sudanese elections, believing that Sudan has violated international law with its decision, which they described as anti-Egyptian.

Headline: 23 Killed in Libya as Islamist Militants Battle Rival Militias

Fighting between Islamist militias and rival groups in a western Libyan town has killed at least 23 people, a hospital official said Sunday. The intense battle in Kikla also left 43 people wounded, mainly from shrapnel wounds, said the official, Emad Khalifa Abdul-Salam of the Gharyan hospital, southwest of the capital, Tripoli. The fighting is part of a nationwide power struggle between Islamist-backed militias, which have seized control of most of Tripoli, including its international airport, and their opponents, who back an internationally recognized government based in the far eastern part of the country. The anti-Islamist Zintan militia, named for its hometown in the west, attacked Kikla, an Islamist stronghold, on Saturday. A commander in the Islamist militias, known as Libya Dawn, said the Zintan militia, with the backing of local tribes, was able to seize parts of Kikla and briefly cut roads between Kikla and Gharyan, about 50 miles southwest of Tripoli. But the Libya Dawn fighters forced them to retreat, allowing traffic to resume, the commander said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the news media. Facebook pages affiliated with the Zintan militias showed pictures of Libya Dawn vehicles they claimed to have seized in the fighting.

Headline:  Turkish official denies report of deal with US to use bases for ISIS strikes

A Turkish official on Monday denied reports of an agreement with the United States and Arab allies on using an air base in southern Turkey for operations against the Islamic State group. An unnamed official told the Associated Press that there is no new agreement, and Turkey and the U.S. are still talking about the Incirlik air base as well as Turkish demands for the creation of a no-fly zone and a safe haven for refugees. The denial comes after Obama administration officials told The New York Times that an American assessment team is expected to arrive in Turkey this week to determine what kind of missions can be flown from the Turkish bases, as well as and iron out the details of a training program for moderate Syrian rebels that also reportedly was agreed on over the weekend. U.S. Defense officials, though, told Fox News it is premature to say what the Turks might be agreeing to, though a U.S. military team is slated to head to Turkey later in the week.

Headline:    Pro- and anti-ISIL students clash at Turkish universities

A series of tense incidents has taken place at some of Turkey’s universities, including İstanbul University and the Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ), over the past couple of weeks as pro- and anti-Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) groups of students continue to clash. Twenty-seven pro-ISIL students were detained by police after a quarrel erupted with anti-ISIL students at İstanbul University’s faculty of economics and administrative sciences on Monday. The pro-ISIL students, who reportedly had their faces covered, wearing black hats and holding sticks, were heard shouting phrases like, “We are Muslim students,” as they were taken to police vehicles. Nine of the detained students are allegedly affiliated with Muslim Youths Association which is known for its radical Islamist tendencies. The detained students were taken to the İstanbul Police Department’s anti-terror office for interrogation after undergoing health checks at a hospital. Some anti-ISIL students at the university’s campus issued a press statement after the attack, saying: “We, students of the İstanbul University, have been subject to the aggression of ISIL supporters who have blood on their hands. ISIL militants are known for their aggression. They murder children and rape women in Rojava and Kobani. Those pro-ISIL ‘so-called’ students with black masks attacked us with sticks.” The Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government has been the target of criticism for failing to act against ISIL to save Kobani. Violent protests against ISIL attacks and AK Party policy led to the deaths of 34 people last week.

Headline:    Huge amount of explosives ‘that could destroy a city’ seized in southeast Turkey

Turkish police are on high security alert after a large amount of explosives were seized in the southeastern province of Gaziantep. Police seized 150 kilograms of C4 explosives, 20 vests for suicide attacks, and a number of guns and bullets in the operation, daily Habertürk has reported. The amount of explosives could destroy a middle-sized city, the report stated. Gaziantep Police Department head Ali Gezer previously said people “would be terrified” if he announced the amount of weapons and ammunition seized by police in the recent operation. Police are considering the possibility that the ammunition could belong to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), after initial suspicion had focused on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). They are reportedly considering that the seized explosives could be part of ammunition that was allegedly deployed by ISIL in big cities, the report added. Red alerts have been issued in many cities, including Istanbul and Ankara.

Headline:   Thousands take part in opposition rally in Armenia

About 12,000 people have rallied in the capital of Armenia to protest a constitutional change being proposed by the president. Protesters and leaders of Armenia’s three major opposition parties, which organized Friday’s rally together despite their ideological differences, also called for the resignation of the government, blaming it for a dismal economic growth. An ad-hoc commission was set up in Armenia early this year to consider potential changes to the constitution. President Serge Sarkisian, who is now the head of state, has proposed a change that would make the prime minister the government’s top official. The opposition claims he has done that so he could run for that job when his second and final term as president ends in 2018 and thereby potentially remain Armenia’s leader.

Headline: Thousands join ‘weekend of resistance’ as Brown protests expand beyond Ferguson

Headline:  Hundreds, led by clergy, march to Ferguson police station Monday

Protests over the Aug. 9 killing of Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager, continue to grow as thousands of people from all over the United States descended on greater St. Louis to take part in a weekend-long series of events and marches demanding “justice” for the killing. Events in what one student called “the epicenter of the movement against police brutality” have transformed since the violence of the immediate aftermath of the shooting into a more sophisticated, but often edgy and raw, strategy where protesters are fanning out to civic events like the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra and sporting events, including this weekend’s baseball playoffs featuring the St. Louis Cardinals. What has been billed by organizers as a “weekend of resistance” is part of an evolving protest strategy as the country awaits a grand jury verdict. The new wave of increasingly organized protests are also serving as a stark warning to authorities that only an indictment will be accepted by the community. City officials are taking those warnings seriously, as they’ve already laid plans to respond to any potential outbreak of social unrest.

Headline:  Yemen southerners plan huge protests to demand secession

Southern separatists in Yemen have called for huge demonstrations Tuesday to demand secession, aiming to benefit from the political chaos in Sanaa after the capital’s takeover by Shiite rebels. Hardliners in the Southern Movement called for protests in Aden, the capital of former South Yemen, and in Mukalla, provincial capital of Hadramawt in the southeast. The chosen date, October 14, marks the 51st anniversary of the south’s revolt against British colonial rule. The aim is to “send one last message to the northerners that we are more determined than ever to build an independent state,” said Abdullah al-Jifri, leader of a southern faction. The head of the League of Southerners, who lives in exile in Saudi Arabia, called for a large turnout at the demonstrations. “The people of the south are marching to Aden from all provinces because they realise that the ongoing dispute provides the last chance to cap years of struggle for the south’s independence,” said Khalid al-Kathiri, spokesman for the Supreme Council of the Southern Movement. One southern protester was shot dead and four others were wounded on August 28 when police opened fire at a demonstration by separatists in the port city of Aden.

Fresh violence has broken out in Hong Kong as hundreds of unidentified men attacked protest barriers in the city, clashing with anti-election law protesters and security forces. On Monday, dozens of men, many wearing surgical masks and armed with crowbars and cutting tools, tried to forcefully remove the metal barricades that protesters had set up. This caused scuffles between demonstrators and anti-protest groups which are opposed to the campaign against the election law. A group of police officers eventually intervened. Police said they arrested two men who tried to engage in clashes with the protesters. “Before the police came, young men wearing masks and dark clothing came to pick fights with people,” Kevin Ng, an eyewitness, said. Chinese state media have blamed the US for being behind the protests in Hong Kong. The claim has been rejected by US State Department.

Halliburton Co., Dow Chemical Co. and Merck & Co. (MCK) lost at least 4.3 percent to pace declines in energy, commodity and health-care companies that led the market lower. Spirit Airlines Inc., United Continental Holdings Inc. and American Airlines Group Inc. sank more than 7 percent as the Bloomberg U.S. Airlines Index extended its loss since Sept. 2 to 22 percent. The S&P 500 (SPX) slid 1.6 percent to 1,874.74 at 4 p.m. in New York, falling below its average from the past 200 days of 1,905 for the first time in two years. The index extended its three-day drop to 4.8 percent and closed at the lowest since May 20. The Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 223.03 points, or 1.3 percent, to 16,321.07. The Nasdaq Composite Index sank 1.5 percent and the Russell 2000 Index declined 0.4 percent. “It seemed like we were finally having a little slowing in selloff momentum, but obviously the bears won out here,” Joe Bell, a senior equity analyst in Cincinnati at Schaeffer’s Investment Research Inc., said by phone. Ebola is adding to “overall uncertainty and fear amongst Americans. Energy and oil are continuing to take a beating and are leading the market lower.”

South Korea deploys additional military forces to the islands on its border with the North, amid renewed rising tensions between the two rival neighbors. South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff announced on Monday that the army has dispatched Chiron Man missiles and armored vehicles to the border area, west of the peninsula. The top army authority further stated that the country’s armed forces have worked out a timetable on how to respond to North Korea’s potential military provocations. “The military devised a timetable on how to respond to North Korea’s possible provocations after the reassessment of its recent military buildup and attack patterns,” it said. This is while the two sides exchanged fire across their borders on Friday after South Korean activists launched balloons carrying pamphlets that criticized the government in Pyongyang.

A Texas healthcare worker who provided care for Thomas Eric Duncan, the first patient to be given a diagnosis of Ebola in the US, who died on Wednesday, has tested positive for the deadly virus. At a Sunday morning press conference at the hospital, it was confirmed that a close contact of the healthcare worker – who officials said was wearing full protective gear when he or she made contact with Duncan – has also been placed, “proactively”, in isolation. The new case is the first person-to-person transmission of the disease in the US. Dr Tom Frieden, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said the diagnosis of the healthcare worker showed there had been a clear breach of safety protocol at the hospital.

A 21-month-old girl is the first in the state of Michigan and second in the U.S. to die this year from a strain of the enterovirus that has infected more than 500 people across the nation, health officials said on Saturday. Madeline Reid, who was stricken with Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68), passed away late on Friday while being treated at the Children’s Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, hospital officials said in a statement. More than 500 people, mostly children, in 43 states and the District of Columbia have been infected with EV-D68 since mid-August, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This week, the CDC said that a 4-year-old Eli Waller of New Jersey, who went to bed last month in seemingly good health and died in his sleep, was the first fatality linked directly to the strain of the virus. Aside from Reid and Waller, at least four others infected with Enterovirus D68 have died this year, although the CDC said it is unclear what role the virus played in their deaths.

Headline:  Vatican calls for Catholic Church to welcome gays

Catholic bishops took an unprecedented step on Monday to “welcome” homosexuals and noting they had “gifts and qualities” to offer the church. As the global synod on the family entered its second week at the Vatican, the bishops released a midterm document summarising the closed-door debate taking place between nearly 200 bishops and lay officials. While the church reaffirmed its opposition to marriage and same sex unions, the ground-breaking document said homosexuality prompted “serious reflection” and was an “important educative challenge”. “Are we capable of welcoming these people, guaranteeing them a fraternal space in our communities?” the document asked. “Often they wish to encounter a church that offers them a welcoming home. “Are our communities capable of providing that, accepting and valuing their sexual orientation, without compromising Catholic doctrine on the family and matrimony?” Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminister and the head of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, told The Telegraph there were no easy answers and stressed that this was a synod about pastoral care. “I don’t think this document approves of same sex unions or same sex marriage. But it does make a very strong compassionate, heartfelt effort to say we want to talk, we want to engage with you,” he said. The synod document also signalled a more “constructive” approach to cohabitation and a simpler approach to marriage annulment, “speeding up” the procedure and the possibility of giving local bishops more power to dissolve marriages. No decisions or doctrinal changes were announced. But the report was described as an “earthquake” by John Thavis, journalist and author of the bestselling The Vatican Diaries”. Other commentators agreed.

Headline:  300,000 Evacuated as Strong Cyclone Hits Eastern India

A powerful cyclone crashed against the eastern coast of India close to noon on Sunday, uprooting trees, lashing the area with heavy rain and wind, and disrupting power and communication lines. Close to 300,000 people were evacuated from their homes in parts of the states of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh as of Sunday evening, according to disaster and relief officials in each state. One of the worst-hit regions was the coast of Andhra Pradesh, where more than 130,000 people were evacuated starting on Saturday in preparation for the storm, and where the 15-mile eye of the storm passed on Sunday afternoon. The storm, which is called Cyclone Hudhud, hit the southern port city of Visakhapatnam, where there is a major naval base. “There is huge damage,” said N. Chandrababu Naidu, the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh, in a telephone interview with the Indian news channel NDTV. “Even to buildings, trees and also crops. Communication has totally collapsed.” The Japanese island of Okinawa was also hit by a powerful typhoon, Vongfong, on Sunday. The typhoon was expected by Monday to fully reach the island of Kyushu, Japan, becoming the second severe storm to hit in a week, according to The Associated Press. At least 35 people were reported injured in Okinawa and Kyushu, where the authorities told 150,000 people to evacuate as the typhoon toppled trees, flooded streets and cut power to more than 60,000 homes. The Japan Meteorological Agency said the typhoon could reach the Tokyo area Tuesday, gradually losing strength as it moves up the archipelago. In India, officials with the Indian Meteorological Department said to NDTV that the winds from the cyclone were about 121 miles per hour, earning a “very severe” cyclone designation, but that within six hours, the winds would diminish by half, reducing it to a cyclone. Six hours after that, officials said, winds would further weaken by half, making it a “depression” by midnight.

Headline:  Typhoon Vongfong hits south Japan, moves to main island

The strongest storm to hit Japan this year battered the southern islands of Kyushu and Shikoku early on Monday, brought heavy rain to Tokyo and caused extensive travel disruption. Typhoon Vongfong has forced the cancellation of more than 500 domestic flights, the public broadcaster NHK said. At least one overseas flight was canceled, according to an airline. Many trains in western cities were also suspended, NHK said. More than 820,000 people have been urged to leave their homes, it said. About 4,900 households in Tokyo suburbs were without power, media said. Rain in Tokyo was expected to intensify overnight. Vongfong battered the southern Japanese island of Okinawa, 600 km (1,000 miles) south of Tokyo, as well as Kyushu and Shikoku islands, injuring 59 people, NHK said. On Sunday, the wind weakened significantly from the previous day when it reached a peak of 234 kph 146 mph), which had made Vongfong into a “super typhoon”.
