Members of the ‘Hozrim La’har’ (Trans: ‘Return to the Mount’) activist group marched toward the Temple Mount Tuesday, demanding full Israeli sovereignty over Judaism’s holiest site. Jerusalem police forces tried for several hours to stop the march, which was attended by dozens of teenagers and young adults. Police eventually stopped the march, after the group reached the Temple Mount through the Muslim quarter – by showing blatant police brutality. Two activists were injured and six were arrested for disturbing the peace. According to the group’s Facebook page, one of the arrested was a fifteen year-old girl. “It would be better if police blocked Arabs’ entry to the Temple Mount and did not prevent Jews from exercising their right to pray there,” activists told Arutz Sheva Tuesday. “Today we celebrate 66 years of Israeli Independence – but not on the Temple Mount.”

The question of Jewish prayer rights on the Temple Mount may be decided by the Likud Convention. As per a decision Tuesday by the Likud’s internal court, the Directorate of the Likud Convention will decide Wednesday whether to bring the matter before the the Likud Convention plenum, which convenes Wednesday and Thursday. The Likud Court has authorized the Directorate of the Convention to hold a vote regarding a motion that calls for strengthening the sovereignty of the state of Israel on the Temple Mount, allowing prayer by Jews on the Mount, and a cessation of the discrimination against Jews at the site. The Chairman of the Temple Organizations’ HQ, Attorney Aviad Visoli, filed a motion with the Likud court and demanded that a resolution regarding the Temple Mount be brought before the Convention.

The Palestinian Authority’s announcement that it will send 3,000 police officers to Gaza as part of a unity agreement with Hamas could mean U.S. taxpayers are now at least indirectly helping an officially designated terror organization maintain law and order — and its grip on power. The police deployment came as part of a deal between the mainly secular government of the West Bank and the radical Islamist regime of Hamas that rules in Gaza. That agreement effectively ended hopes for the Israeli-Palestinian peace process championed by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, but it also raises questions about U.S. foreign aid to the Palestinian Authority going forward. Since the U.S. subsidizes the PA budget to the tune of approximately $400 million per year, any effort to help Hamas indirectly spends U.S. dollars, say observers in Israel. That could be prohibited by U.S. policy, if it is read as part of a power-sharing agreement. Meanwhile, The interior ministry in Hamas-ruled Gaza said it freed six prisoners from rival party Fatah on Monday as part of a Palestinian unity pact the Islamist Hamas signed with Fatah two weeks ago. The move came as Palestinian President and Fatah Leader Mahmoud Abbas met exiled Hamas chief Khaled Meshal in the Qatari capital Doha, for their first talks since the groups agreed to soon form a unity government and hold elections.

A powerful Lebanese politician and the leader of the country’s Druze population called on the Syrian opposition to distance itself from reports it was seeking to collaborate with Israel, saying such cooperation could push Syria deeper into civil war. The Monday statement by Progressive Socialist Party (PSP) head Walid Jumblatt came a week after a senior Syrian opposition figure told The Times of Israel rebels were looking for help from Jerusalem. “We refuse and condemn any resorting to Israelis, as some leaked information [suggested] a security and intelligence cooperation between some rebel parties [and Israel],” Jumblatt said in a column published by the Al-Anbaa news site, according to Lebanese media reports.

Hezbollah Tuesday called for a political consensus on a new president and warned that Lebanon might slip into a power vacuum if no head of state is elected by May 25. Political leaders must “agree on a president,” Hezbollah’s deputy head Sheikh Naim Qassem said. “If no consensus is reached, it means that … we might plunge into [power] vacuum,” Qassem warned. “I’m not saying we want [a power] vacuum, but I’m saying that this vacuum is the natural result of the failure by some [politicians] to make consensual decisions.” President Michel Sleiman’s term ends May 25 with no clear candidate capable of garnering the needed majority in Parliament to win the presidency. A third round of voting is scheduled for Wednesday. However, the session is likely to fail to elect a president amid an expected boycott by most MPs from the Hezbollah-led March 8 coalition.

Headline: 10 EU nations set to tax financial transactions
A group of ten European Union countries has agreed to introduce a financial transaction tax from 2016 onward, in an effort to curb speculation and claw back revenues after governments had to bail out banks. The nations — including economic heavyweights Germany, France, Italy and Spain — will initially tax only the trading of shares and some derivatives, according to a joint statement published Tuesday on the sidelines of a meeting of the 28-nation bloc’s finance ministers. The levy’s scope won’t be as broad as supporters initially hoped, but the countries said they hope to reach agreement on a tax that would include trading in most financial products later on. The EU estimates a broad levy could yield some 30 billion euros ($42 billion) in additional annual tax revenues. Austrian Finance Minister Michael Spindelegger, who played a leading role in the tax negotiations, said the group will now work to overcome remaining practical hurdles to finalize the legislation by the end of this year.

The head of U.S. air forces in the Pacific said on Monday that Russia’s intervention in Ukraine had been accompanied by a significant increase in Russian air activity in the Asia-Pacific region in a show of strength and to gather intelligence. General Herbert “Hawk” Carlisle said the activity had included Russian flights to the coast of California, and around the U.S. Pacific island of Guam. Headline: Saudi Arabia Reports More MERS Deaths
Saudi Arabia reports three more deaths as cases continue to rise. Saudi Arabia’s death toll from MERS has hit 115. The Associated Press reports that on Monday, a 45-year-old man and two women in their 50s died from MERS (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) after contracting it in the western Saudia Arabia city Jiddah. Three additional people now have the disease, health officials report, bringing the Saudi Arabian total to 414 confirmed cases — and just last week, the CDC reported the first case in the U.S. The U.S. victim was isolated right away, and doctors say he will likely be heading home soon. He is currently at Community Hospital in Munster, Ind. The patient lives in Saudi Arabia and works in a hospital. He was visiting family in the U.S. on a planned trip. MERS is in the same virus family as SARS. It has no vaccine or treatment, and researchers believe the disease may have come from camels. So far, human-to-human transmission has only occurred among people with close contact with infected people. There’s worry over how much the disease could spread in July when millions of people are expected to visit on Saudi Arabia for Ramadan.

In the statue, which is to be cast in bronze and is near completion, Satan is depicted as “Baphomet” with a goat’s head and horns, and there is a boy on his left and a girl on his right. “We decided to go with that because it is a fairly traditional character,” Lucien Greaves, spokesman for The Satanic Temple, told KFOR-TV in Oklahoma City. “It also offers a lap that visitors can come to sit on, have their picture taken with.”

In a span of just five days, almost 120 people in Dallas and Austin overdosed on K2, a synthetic drug that mimics marijuana. Police sources confirmed to News 8 that the overdoses in both cities are likely related, and the drug originated with a Dallas supplier. Stacey Davis, director of prevention programs for the Council on Alcohol & Drug Abuse in Dallas, said while K2 use is not the rise, users jump on new trends for suppliers or new batches. “What ends up happening is the media or the community doesn’t catch wind of it until, unfortunately, when something bad happens,” Davis said. Users smoke K2, and while it’s supposed to mimic marijuana, it can have wide-ranging effects on the body. The patients in Dallas were so sick they had to be sedated. Toxicology tests will tell for sure if all the overdoses came from the same batch. Police are also investigating whether the K2 was laced with another drug.

The team would likely include military personnel, law enforcement personnel and others with experience in intelligence, investigations, hostage negotiation and victims’ assistance, White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters. “Time is of the essence,” he said, stressing that the kidnappings happened 22 days ago. “Appropriate action must be taken to locate and to free these young women before they are trafficked or killed.” Carney said that Secretary of State John Kerry spoke earlier Tuesday with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who “welcomed” the secretary’s offer to send a team to discuss assistance. It’s unclear whether the team of military and law enforcement personnel has yet gotten the green light.

Yemeni government forces captured al Qaeda’s main stronghold in the southern part of the country on Tuesday after insurgents blew up the local government compound there and fled, the Defense Ministry said. The mountainous al-Mahfad area of Abyan province, along with Azzan in the adjacent province of Shabwa, has been the militants’ main stronghold in Yemen since 2012. In that year, the Yemeni army, with U.S. help, drove the fighters from towns they had seized during a chaotic national uprising in 2011. Major powers are keen on Yemen curbing the Islamist insurgents and restoring order in the south to prevent threats to global No. 1 oil exporter Saudi Arabia next door. They also want to reduce any risk of Yemen being used as a springboard for attacks on Western targets. The government forces’ offensive is the most concerted drive against al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) – seen by Washington as one of the group’s most lethal wings – in nearly two years. The group has been blamed for waging deadly attacks against security forces, foreigners and oil and gas facilities.
