New earthquake in Japan: magnitude 6.2 strikes Hokkaido An earthquake struck the island of Hokkaido in Japan early Monday local time. The country has been hit by several earthquakes in recent weeks, and Monday’s quake reached magnitude 6.2. No tsunami warning has been issued after the quake, which struck about 200 kilometers east of the city of Sapporo. It is not yet clear whether anyone was injured.
Israeli strikes kill 14 in Lebanon after Netanyahu ordered ‘vigorous’ attacks
The conflict environment remains volatile as Sunday Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed 14 people, including two children and two women, with 37 injured, amid a precarious ceasefire that began mid-April and was extended for three weeks. Israel said the strikes targeted Hezbollah sites used to plan attacks, while a 19-year-old IDF soldier was killed by a Hezbollah drone attack, and Hezbollah drones were intercepted attempting to cross into Israel. Prime Minister Netanyahu framed the situation as the ceasefire fraying and warned of continued force in Lebanon, even as both sides accuse each other of violations.
