Syrian Demonstrations against Airstrikes: “Obama, We Are Digging Your Grave”

Headline:  Netanyahu to tell Obama: Don’t reward Iran for role in Islamic State fight

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will meet with U.S. President Barack Obama Wednesday at 6 P.M. Israel time. Senior officials in Netanyahu’s entourage said he will use the White House meeting to tell Obama that the international war against Islamic State must not result in concessions to Iran in the ongoing negotiations over its nuclear program. The prime minister told U.S. Jewish leaders on Tuesday that he also intends to raise with Obama the possibility of bringing Arab states into the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, a proposal he made in his speech this week before the UN General Assembly.

Headline: Watch: Netanyahu Shows in Pictures How ‘Hamas is ISIS’- VIDEO

Headline: U.S. Distances Itself from Netanyahu’s Comments

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu met with leaders of the Jewish Federations of North America on Tuesday, a day after addressing the UN General Assembly in New York where he argued the Hamas terror group is just like Islamic State (ISIS). “Every time I come to the UN I try to tell the truth as it is,” Netanyahu said. During his address Netanyahu showed a picture of Hamas terrorists firing a rocket near small children. “But here’s a picture I didn’t show in the UN yesterday. This is an impending execution. But this isn’t ISIS, this is Hamas. And during the recent fighting in Gaza, right around the time that ISIS was doing its grisly deeds, Hamas executed dozens of Palestinians just to impose fear and force the population of Gaza into submission,” said Netanyahu. The Hamas “killing spree” of those it accused of “collaboration” with Israel led to outrage from the Palestinian Authority (PA), partially due perhaps to rumors that Hamas was using the claims to liquidate Fatah rivals. The White House on Monday criticized Netanyahu’s comparison of the two terrorist organizations Hamas and ISIS, to which Netanyahu said Tuesday “it’s true there are some differences between Hamas and ISIS – for example ISIS beheads people and Hamas puts a bullet in the back of their heads. But to the victims, and the victims’ families, the horror is the same.”

Headline: Poll: Palestinians Back Rocket Fire if Blockade Not Lifted

Most Palestinian Arabs would favor resuming rocket fire at Israel if it does not lift its Gaza blockade, although support for armed confrontation is dropping off, according to a poll published Monday by AFP. “An overwhelming majority of 80% supports the launching of rockets from the Gaza Strip at Israel if the siege and blockade are not ended,” said the survey of 1,200 Palestinian Arabs in Gaza and Judea and Samaria, conducted by the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research (PSR). Conducted a month after the end of Israel’s self-defense Operation Protective Edge in Gaza, the poll says 44 percent of respondents saw armed confrontation as the best way to “end Israeli occupation” and set up a Palestinian state. It said that 29 percent believed negotiations were the best option, while 23 percent favored non-violent resistance.

Headline: Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan: US is expanding Iran’s role in the region

The Islamic Action Front, the political wing of the Muslim Brotherhood in Jordan, has said that the main goal of the US-led war on terrorism is to “redraw the map of the region by expanding Iran’s role to become [America’s] gatekeeper,” Anadolu news agency reported. “The international coalition started its attacks on the Syrian opposition while keeping silent on the Syrian regime’s crimes, including the killing of civilians using chemical weapons,” the news agency quoted a statement issued by the Action Front as saying. The statement added that, “This represents an attack on Islam and the hopes of Arabs seeking freedom.” The Islamist party renewed its objection to the participation of Jordan in the US-led anti-Islamic State coalition as it is against foreign interference in the affairs of any of the Arab countries.

Headline: The Khorasan Group Does Not Exist- We’re Being Had…Again

There is a reason that no one had heard of such a group until a nanosecond ago, when the “Khorosan Group” suddenly went from anonymity to the “imminent threat” that became the rationale for an emergency air war there was supposedly no time to ask Congress to authorize. You haven’t heard of the Khorosan Group because there isn’t one. It is a name the administration came up with, calculating that Khorosan — the –Iranian–Afghan border region — had sufficient connection to jihadist lore that no one would call the president on it. To begin with, calling the group “Khorasan” makes no sense either in Arabic or any other language. Khorasan is not an organizational name or even some exotic acronym, but an ancient Islamic historical term from the far east of the Muslim world. It is used today by al-Qaeda (and others who are fond of archaic Islamic terminology) to describe the Afghanistan-Pakistan-Iran region. The “Khorosan Group” is al-Qaeda. It is simply a faction within the global terror network’s Syrian franchise, “Jabhat al-Nusra.” Its leader, Mushin al-Fadhli (believed to have been killed in this week’s U.S.-led air strikes), was an intimate of Ayman al-Zawahiri, the emir of al-Qaeda who dispatched him to the jihad in Syria. Except that if you listen to administration officials long enough, you come away thinking that Zawahiri is not really al-Qaeda, either. Instead, he’s something the administration is at pains to call “core al-Qaeda.” Studying up on al qaeda affiliates we ran across a smaller cell that operated out of Eastern Iran. Their group was responsible for bringing forth an old Islamic Hadith (story or prophesy) that foretold the rise of a new Islamic army in the old Umayyad Caliphate province of Khorasan. Khorasan was located in Eastern Iran and was the birthplace of modern Persian culture. The modern Persian language, science, philosophy, etc came out of Khorasan. This group posed a clear and present danger to the Iranian government. It was basically an insurgent group biding time. To the Khorasan Group, and many other jihadists, the current maps mean nothing. They don’t respect them. They still see the maps laid out with the old Umayyad boundary lines. The Shia government of Iran is an example of why regional al Qaeda groups were formed. To bring global jihad to everywhere possible. Fast forward to September 22nd (last night). The Obama administration began bombing ISIS targets within Syria. On top of that they also chose to hit the Khorasan Group. The President even mentioned them in his speech the following morning. Air strikes over a sovereign nation that has not sanctioned them is no small thing. Hitting ISIS would be justified and explainable to the rest of the world. Processing additional targets is an entirely different matter. Let’s say the Obama Administration wanted to prove a point that they’re not arming the wrong rebels. Hitting an al qaeda affiliate would be a good bonus right? Then why wouldn’t they hit a larger affiliate like Jabhat Al Nusra? That makes way more sense. Instead, media reports are coming out today that show government officials reporting that the Khorasan Group is one of the scariest affiliates they’ve seen. Bull. Al qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula is operationally far more potent than even Al Nusra…much less Khorasan. Iranian officials are in New York City today discussing their nuclear program. It’s very clear that the U.S. and Iran are aiming for rapprochement. Striking a clear and present threat to the Iranian government along with our strikes against ISIS is just too convenient. Admitting they’re working together is something that both Obama and Rouhani won’t do. Politically they’d never recover. However, that doesn’t change the fact that last night the United States, Iran, and Syria all gained ground.

Headline:  Iran to give military grant to Lebanese army: official

Iran is to give a military grant to the Lebanese Army, the head of Iran’s national security council said on Tuesday, boosting security forces that are already backed by Saudi Arabia and the United States. The Lebanase Army has been stepping up efforts to prevent Sunni Muslim fighters from Syria entering Lebanese border towns. Last month, the northern town of Arsal was the scene of the deadliest spillover of fighting in the three-year-old civil war in Syria. The rise of hardline militants in Syria such as Islamic State presents a shared foe for Shi’ite Iran and its enemies, Sunni Saudi Arabia and the United States. “The Islamic Republic decided to give a military grant to the Lebanese Army,” Supreme National Security Council Director Ali Shamkhani told reporters in Beirut. He did not say what the grant would include. A diplomatic source said the Iranian defense minister would soon ask his Lebanese counterpart for a list of weapons needed by the army.

Headline:   Qatari mediators meet militants outside Arsal

Qatari mediators arrived in the outskirts of Arsal Tuesday and began negotiating with militants holding at least 21 security personnel hostage, a security source told The Daily Star. The Lebanese Army and members of Lebanon’s General Security accompanied the negotiators to the outskirts, the security source said. The delegation was comprised of Qatar mediators who were also joined by residents from the northeastern border town of Arsal, he added. A source also acquainted with the militants confirmed the Qatari delegation had begun negotiating with the militants, saying that “negotiations have just become serious.” The Nusra Front and ISIS militants took more than 30 policemen and soldiers captive in August. Nusra has released six captives and executed one solider, while ISIS executed two soldiers so far. The renewed seriousness in the negotiations was evidenced by the release of several Syrian refugees detained by the Lebanese Army, the source added.

Headline:   Al-Nusra accuses Lebanon of handing over Syrian refugees to Assad regime

“Lebanese security chief Abbas Ibrahim surrendered 10 detained Syrian refugees to the Syrian regime,” Al-Nusra Front claimed yesterday, an accusation Ibrahim denies. Al-Nusra said: “This action will have severe repercussions on Lebanon’s General Security Directorate and Mr Ibrahim.” However, Ibrahim denied “deporting a number of Syrian nationals across the Syrian-Lebanese border”. Al-Nusra Front said on Twitter, “In light of the campaign to systematically target our displaced people abroad, we were notified that the Lebanese security general has handed over 10 Syrian refugees to the Assad regime.” Since the onset of fierce clashes with the Lebanese army in the town of Arsal on the Syrian-Lebanese border in August, Al-Nusra has been kidnapping Lebanese soldiers and has threatened to kill them if the Lebanese authorities did not release Syrian detainees. The group warned that a deal has been struck between officials in Beirut and Damascus and that this will have “serious repercussions on the General Security Directorate and its general who is bowing down to Iranian will”, a reference made to the Iranian sponsored Lebanese Hezbollah, which has publically fought alongside the Syrian regime since 2013. The organisation went on to address the families of detained fighters by saying: “Your government is lying to you. We previously demanded that negotiations between Beirut and Damascus stop until the situation in Arsal are dealt with completely,” adding that, “nothing has come out of these indirect negotiations”.

Headline: Saudi policeman shot in Shiite village

Gunmen have opened fire on a Saudi checkpoint in a Shiite village in the Gulf state’s oil-rich Eastern Province, wounding a policeman, police said on Tuesday. The attack in Awamiya came at around midnight on Monday, state news agency SPA cited the province’s police spokesman as saying. It came two days after police in the mainly Sunni kingdom killed a man wanted on “terror-related” charges in a firefight in the same village. Awamiya, just west of Dammam city, has seen several clashes between security forces and Shiite protesters. In early September, gunmen fired on a police patrol there, wounding one officer and causing a pipeline to catch fire. Saudi Arabia’s estimated two million Shiites, who have complained of marginalisation, live mostly in the east where the vast majority of the OPEC kingpin’s huge oil reserves lie. Demonstrations in Eastern Province first erupted in 2011 alongside a Shiite-led protest movement in neighbouring Bahrain. They turned violent in 2012, and clashes have now killed at least 24 people, including at least four policemen.

Syria Headline:    Jihadists free 70 kidnapped children in Syria: monitor

The Islamic State jihadist group on Tuesday freed more than 70 Kurdish school children its fighters kidnapped in northern Syria in May, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said. The Britain-based group said parents had reported the release of the children, who are believed to be aged between 13 and 15. The group of 70 were among 153 school children, most of them boys, abducted by IS jihadists on May 29 in the northern province of Aleppo. They were intercepted and taken hostage en route to their hometown of Ain al-Arab after sitting school exams in Aleppo city. They were kidnapped around the area of Minbej, which has been targeted in recent days in air strikes by a US-led coalition fighting jihadists. In the weeks after the children were abducted, five students managed to escape and another 37 were released in batches, including the 10 girls among the group, the Observatory said. There were no immediate details on why the group decided to free the 70 additional hostages on Tuesday, and the Observatory said around 30 more children were still being held.

Syria Headline:   Islamic State have seized 325 villages and towns in the countryside of Ayn al- Arab

SOHR knew that IS militants have taken control over the defense lines of the eastern, southern, western, southern western and southern eastern countryside on the city of Ayn al- Arab. Thus, the number of villages, towns and communities that IS took control have risen to 325 since the beginning of IS attack on the countryside of Ayn al- Arab in September 16, 2014. Amid fears of committing massacres against the Kurdish civilians who remain in the city of Ayn al- Arab and in some villages in a case that IS fighters could storm and control them or to face the same destiny of 200000 Kurdish civilians who were displaced from their villages 2 weeks ago where dozens of thousands of their livestock, cars, farm tractors, vehicles and houses  were stolen. In the meantime, the destiny of 800 Kurdish people has still ambiguous; it is unknown whether they are still alive or killed by IS.

Syria Headline:   Workers Dig out Dead after Syria Regime Strike on Aleppo

At least eight people were killed on Tuesday, among them four children, when Syrian regime helicopters dropped explosives-packed barrel bombs on a district of northern Aleppo, a monitoring group said. The attack between the neighborhoods of Sakhur and Sheikh Khodr caused widespread damage, leveling several buildings and shearing the facades off others. Civil defense members in the rebel-held east of the city rushed to the scene, using bulldozers and pickaxes to clear rubble and twisted metal. Some local residents also pitched in to help, as others could only looked on, dazed at the destruction. The emergency crews partly unearthed one body, which appeared to be that of a teenager clad in pink trousers visible under thick dust. Not far away, they worked to remove rubble from around another body, a small arm that appeared to be that of a child emerging from the shattered brickwork. “The strike here was this morning. Can you show me even one person here from the Free Syrian Army (rebel fighters)?” asked Jihad, who survived the bombing. “The people here were all women and children who were sleeping,” he said.

Syria Headline:   Syria says will only talk peace with ‘a real opposition’

Syria will not hold peace talks to end the three-and-a-half-year war while Islamist fighters are in the country, nor will it negotiate a political solution with rebels that are recognised by the west, the foreign minister told the United Nations. Instead, Damascus will only accept a political solution with “a real opposition,” that is recognised by the Syrian government of president Bashar al-Assad. The statement killed off prospects for a resumption of peace talks in the near future despite efforts by UN peace envoy Staffan de Mistura, who was appointed in July to re-start negotiations. “We cannot start any political solution while terrorism is still rampant in Syria,” Foreign Minister Walid Mualem told the UN General Assembly. Mualem also dismissed the Syrian opposition recognized by the West to attend the peace talks, saying it lacked credibility and followed “the orders of its Western masters.” “We are open to a political solution in Syria, with a real opposition … that does not depend on the outside,” he said.

Iraq Headline: Wave of attacks kills more than 40 across Iraq

A wave of car bombings and other attacks across Iraq killed at least 41 people on Tuesday, including 22 in the capital Baghdad, officials said. No one claimed responsibility for the attacks, which mainly targeted Shiite areas and were likely carried out by Sunni militants. The extremist Islamic State group, which seized a third of the country in a lightning offensive over the summer, has claimed similar previous attacks. In the deadliest attack, a car bomb in northwestern Baghdad killed eight people and wounded 15. Another car bomb in a different area killed seven and wounded 21, and a mortar attack killed seven and wounded 13 elsewhere in the capital, police said. All three attacks targeted Shiite-majority areas. Earlier Tuesday a car bomb killed four civilians and two policemen in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, about 90 kilometers (55 miles) south of Baghdad. Another 16 people were wounded in the blast. Another explosives-laden car went off in the town of Iskandariyah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) south of Baghdad, killing five civilians and wounding 13 others. Eight other civilians were killed in separate attacks in Baghdad and outside the southern city of Najaf.

Iraq Headline: Kurd troops attack Iraq jihadists on three fronts

Kurdish troops backed by warplanes battled the Islamic State group on three fronts in northern Iraq on Tuesday, clawing back land they lost to the jihadists in recent months.
The Kurdish peshmerga struck before dawn against the town of Rabia on the Syrian border, north of the jihadist-controlled second city Mosul, and south of key oil hub Kirkuk, officers said. A senior source in the peshmerga said troops had entered Rabia, after seizing the villages of As-Saudiyah and Mahmudiyah. “Ground troops are now fighting in the center of Rabia,” which lies about 100 kilometers (60 miles) northwest of Mosul.

He said peshmerga forces, backed by artillery and warplanes, were also attacking Zumar, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of the city, near the reservoir of Iraq’s largest dam, which has been a key battleground between the Kurds and the jihadists. “We have ousted IS from 30 positions, including in the Zumar and Rabia areas,” peshmerga spokesman Halgord Hekmat said. “The advance on Rabia will facilitate efforts to recapture Sinjar. We cannot reach Sinjar without taking Rabia,” Hekmat said.

Iraq Headline: Booby-Trapped Jihadist Flag Kills Three Iraqi Police

Three Iraqi policemen were killed Tuesday when one of them tried to remove a black flag that Islamic State jihadist fighters had booby-trapped south of Kirkuk, police said. Kurdish peshmerga forces backed by local police units recaptured three villages near Daquq, around 180 kilometers (110 miles) north of Baghdad, that had been under IS control since June. Daquq police chief Kawa Gharib said police officers moved across the frontline during the fighting to take down the flag from a position the jihadists had just lost. “One of them attempted an act of heroism and wanted to remove the black flag but when he yanked it out, he triggered a small improvised explosive device,” the officer said. Gharib named him as Sherzad Abdelkader, a senior officer from the Terkelan area, southwest of Kirkuk, and added that two other policemen were also killed by the blast. Abu Mekhlif al-Juburi, a local resident who witnessed the aftermath of the incident, said IS had booby-trapped dozens of the flags floating above its positions in the area. “It started earlier in September when resident of Tel Ali, in the Hawijah area (west of Kirkuk), burned an IS flag,” he said. “The jihadists came back and kidnapped around 50 people from the area and then put up flags everywhere across the region, on every position,” Juburi said. Abu Mohammed al-Mifriji, village chief of Taamur near Daquq, said the jihadists had set up trigger mechanisms on the flags to kill anyone who tries to take them down. “IS has raised hundreds of flags at its bases, positions and frontlines. Now they booby-trap them to make sure nobody can remove them,” he said.

Headline:  Russia ships anti-aircraft missiles to Syria

Russia last week sent a shipment of anti-aircraft missiles to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, according to informed Middle Eastern security officials speaking to WND. Another shipment of Russian weaponry is currently on the way to Syria, the officials said. The officials said last week’s shipment arrived at the port city of Tartus on the Mediterranean coast of Syria, where Russia maintains a naval base. The Russian shipments come as the Obama administration steps up support for the rebels battling the Assad regime. The U.S. aid to the Syrian rebels is purportedly aimed at fighting ISIS terrorists. Two weeks ago, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters his government would provide military support to Syria, claiming the anti-aircraft munitions were meant to aid the Assad regime in the fight against terrorism. However, neither ISIS nor any other jihadist group operating in the area possess any aircraft.

Headline: South Sudan factions agree on federal government

Mediators say South Sudan’s warring factions have agreed on the installation of a federal system of government in South Sudan. The regional body IGAD, which is mediating peace talks in Ethiopia, announced Tuesday that the structure and functions of a transitional government of national unity have been “mostly agreed on.” Mediators said, however, that the parties are yet to agree on when to introduce federalism in the world’s newest country. Representatives for the rebels want immediate implementation but the government favors a 30-month transitional period before the next administration can be formed. South Sudan was plunged into violence last December after the government accused the ousted vice president of launching a failed coup. Thousands of people have since been killed in violence pitting government forces against renegade troops.

Headline: Islamist-allied militias in Libya reject UN talks

Islamist-allied militias in control of the Libyan capital and the country’s top religious body on Tuesday rejected U.N.-led talks that have called for a cease-fire in the battered nation. The announcements reflect the difficulties facing the U.N. envoy to Libya, Bernardino Leon, as he tries to broker a truce amid a deep polarization that has left Libya torn between two rival governments and parliaments. The statements followed the first round of U.N.-brokered talks between Libya’s rival lawmakers held Monday in an attempt to bridge the gap between the warring groups. The Libya Dawn umbrella group, which is in control of Tripoli and which is affiliated with the militia from the western city of Misrata, said on its Facebook page Tuesday that the only way to end the fighting is to disarm its rivals and hunt down their leaders. Libya is facing its worst turmoil since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled longtime dictator Muammar Qaddafi.

Headline:  Protesters in eastern Libya close second oilfield

Protesters blocking Libya’s Abu Attifel oilfield closed another field, blocked a road and seized a company plane, a security official and activist said on Tuesday. The oilfield, a joint venture between Italy’s ENI and Libya’s state oil company, has been closed for a year by local people who demand jobs, part of a wave of strikes at oil facilities that began in July 2013. Protests at other oil ports and fields have ended, but the shutdown continues at Abu Attifelt in Jalu, in Libya’s volatile east, where the field lies. In addition to Abue Attifelt, which used to pump 60,000 barrels a day, the protesters have now also closed the nearby Jalo 59 field, operated by al-Waha Oil Co. That closure lowered Libya’s oil output by 25,000 bpd to 900,000 bpd, a spokesman for state-run National Oil Corp (NOC) said on Sunday. They also seized a company airplane and closed an airstrip and a land road to Ajdabiya, which is on the coast close to the Zueitina oil port. The port is connected by pipelines to Abu Attifel, a security official and local activist said.

Algeria’s justice minister has told state television that some of the members of the group that kidnapped and beheaded a French hiker have been identified. Tayeb Louh said Tuesday evening that the initial investigation has resulted in the identification of “certain members of the terrorist group behind the crime.” French mountain guide Herve Gourdel was kidnapped while hiking in Algeria on Sept. 21 by a splinter group from the Algerian branch of al-Qaida pledging allegiance to the Islamic State group in Syria and Iraq. The militants demanded France end its participation in U.S.-led airstrikes against Islamic State. On Thursday, a video surfaced on social network sites showing Gourdel’s decapitation. Algerian army and police have scoured the mountainous region where Gourdel was kidnapped searching for the group and his remains.

Headline:   Are Turkish troops trapped at Syrian tomb?

Militants of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) are advancing on Suleyman Shah tomb, a sovereign exclave of Turkey situated in Syria’s Aleppo that is being guarded by Turkish soldiers, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said on Tuesday. In April Turkey had sent soldiers to guard Suleyman Shah (1178-1227), the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire Osman I, Trend reports. Turkey claims the sovereignty of the tomb, located 30km from the Turkish-Syrian border on the bank of River Euphrates, under a 1921 agreement signed with France, when Syrian was under the French rule. Turkey has said it would defend the mausoleum. Deputy Prime Minister Arinc said a parliamentary mandate for military action in Iraq and Syria will cover all possible threats.

Headline:   Turkey’s ISIL mandate includes ‘military action abroad, opening bases to foreign troops’

Ankara is on high alert due to recent developments in the region in which Turkish tanks took up positions on a hill overlooking the besieged Syrian border town of Kobane on Monday as shelling by Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) militants intensified, while two motions on Syria and Iraq — including sending troops to foreign countries — are expected to be discussed in Parliament this week. Turkey’s top military commander, Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel briefed the Cabinet on Tuesday on military preparations with regard to the extent of Turkey’s contribution to a United States-led coalition against the threat of ISIL. The government is currently considering joining the coalition. It insists on the creation of a safe zone inside Syria, but the US is cool to the idea, saying it is not part of the campaign at the moment. Turkish press reported on Tuesday that the two motions are expected to include the deployment of coalition troops over the Turkish border with Syria. The military has been working on draft plans for the establishment of a “secure zone” inside Syria. Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu led a Cabinet meeting on Tuesday to discuss the war in the region against ISIL and the coalition’s efforts to deal with this threat.

Hundreds took to the streets of Yemen’s capital on Tuesday for the second protest this week demanding that Huthi rebels who seized control of Sanaa leave. The rebels overran the capital 10 days ago in a lightning offensive and have maintained a strong military presence, conducting patrols and manning checkpoints. Known as Huthis, the Shiite rebels have refused to quit Sanaa despite a UN-brokered deal to give them more influence with the Sunni-dominated government. Frustration with their presence has grown and hundreds rallied in central Sanaa on Tuesday, after a similar protest on Sunday.

A standoff between China and protesters in Hong Kong is deepening as pro-democracy demonstrations continued for a fifth day. Neither side is showing any signs of backing down even as China prepares to mark its National Day on Wednesday. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said on Tuesday that the pro-democracy protests on the city’s streets wouldn’t change China’s mind, as tens of thousands of demonstrators extended a blockade of the territory. In a short statement, the Occupy Central group said it will announce plans for its next stage of civil disobedience on Wednesday if Leung does not meet their demands for democratic reform, including true universal elections by October 1 and Leung’s resignation. Leung said he would not give in to the protesters’ demands for his resignation or for greater democratic reforms.

Headline: Stocks head for worst quarter since euro crisis, dollar soars

A new trough in euro zone inflation pushed the euro to a two-year low on Tuesday, leaving the dollar on course for its biggest quarterly gain in six years and world stocks facing their largest drop since the peak of the euro crisis. Falling food and energy prices saw euro zone inflation slow to 0.3 percent this month, piling the pressure on the European Central Bank to make clear when it meets Thursday that it is ready to take more preventative action. World markets had already been in a hesitant mood as investors wondered what China’s response would be to civil unrest in Hong Kong, and as the dollar’s strength dominated the end of what has been a choppy third quarter. On a broader scale, MSCI’s 45-country All World stock index, was on course for a drop of almost 3 percent on the month and its biggest quarterly fall since Q2 2012, when the euro zone’s debt crisis was at its most intense.

Headline: Russian Ruble Hits Record Low Against Target Currency Basket — Update

Global debt is still rising strongly, crimping growth and threatening defaults around the world. As if the fast degenerating geo-political situation isn’t bad enough, here’s another lorry load of concerns to add to the pile. The UK and US economies may be on the mend at last, but that’s not the pattern elsewhere. On a global level, growth is being steadily drowned under a rising tide of debt, threatening renewed financial crisis, a continued squeeze to living standards, and eventual mass default. I exaggerate only a little in depicting this apocalyptic view of the future as the conclusion of the latest “Geneva Report”, an annual assessment informed by a top drawer conference of leading decision makers and economic thinkers of the big challenges facing the global economy. Aptly titled “Deleveraging? What Deleveraging?”, the report points out that, far from paying down debt since the financial crisis of 2008/9, the world economy as a whole has in fact geared up even further. The raw numbers make explosive reading. Contrary to widely held assumptions, the world has not yet begun to de-lever. In fact global debt-to-GDP public and private non financial debt – is still growing, breaking new highs by the month. There was a brief pause at the height of the crisis, but then the rise in the global debt-GDP ratio resumed, reaching nearly 220c of global GDP over the past year. Much of the more recent growth in this headline figure has been driven by China, which in response to the crisis, unleashed a massive expansion in credit. However, even developed market economies have struggled to make progress, with rising public debt cancelling out any headway being made in reducing household and corporate indebtedness.

At least 3,700 children in Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone who have lost one or both parents to Ebola this year face being shunned, the UN has said. Carers were urgently needed for these orphans, Unicef said. A basic human reaction like comforting a sick child has been turned “into a potential death sentence”, it added. The World Health Organization (WHO) says more than 3,000 people have died of Ebola in West Africa – the world’s most deadly outbreak of the virus. The figure on the number of Ebola orphans follows a two-week assessment mission by the UN children’s agency to the three countries worst-affected by the outbreak. An earlier version of this story said that 4,900 children had lost parents but the correct figure is 3,700. It found that children as young as three or four years old were being orphaned by the disease. Children were discovered alone in the hospitals where their parents had died, or back in their communities where, if they were lucky, they were being fed by neighbours – but all other contact with them was being avoided.

Doctors have spotted more than 275 cases of the uncommon respiratory illness across the country. Most of the victims are children. The virus was first identified 50 years ago, but it wasn’t until recently that hundreds of cases were linked to the virus. The CDC is investigating whether nine cases in Colorado are linked to the virus. Those kids have muscle weakness or paralysis. Meanwhile, two new cases of enterovirus D68 have been confirmed in Mississippi, state health officials said. Both cases are in young children, one from Forrest County and the other from Calhoun County, health officials said. A Hancock County child was reported last week as the first case. The severe respiratory illness has been reported in about two dozen U.S. states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. “There have been some reports in Colorado of this virus potentially causing some cases of muscle weakness or paralysis. In Mississippi, we have not seen this with any of our three confirmed cases,” said Dr. Thomas Dobbs, state epidemiologist. “We are working with healthcare providers to identify any possible complications from this virus and to provide further guidance on testing, prevention and infection control.”

The Dallas County Health and Human Services Department confirms a third case of Chikungunya in Dallas County this year. The infected person contracted the virus during a recent trip to a foreign county, health officials said Monday. Further details on this case were not released due to medical confidentiality and personal privacy reasons. Chikungunya is transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, and it can cause sudden fever and joint pain, as well as rashes. While most people infected with Chikungunya recover, there is no vaccine, and it can become disabling. Numerous cities in North Texas are continuing to spray for mosquitoes, and health officials urge the public to take protective measures by utilizing the “4Ds” to reduce the risk of being bitten by a mosquito infected with Chikungunya

Headline: Mysterious feature on Saturn’s moon baffles NASA scientists

NASA’s Cassini spacecraft has discovered a “mysterious feature” on Saturn’s moon Titan. Scientists are working to determine, what, exactly, this feature might be. NASA reports that the feature is roughly 100 square miles, and it lies in Ligeia Mare, one of Titan’s hydrocarbon seas. Cassini’s radar has observed the feature twice, but its appearance changed between the two sightings. Scientists suspect the feature’s change in appearance could be the result of Titan’s changing seasons, which Cassini’s current extended mission will monitor. The feature’s first sighting was in July 2013, and the radar images depicted a bright spot, which stood out from the dark sea. Scientists were “perplexed” when the feature couldn’t be located with follow-up radar experiments, but they found it again on August 21, 2014.

Headline: Twenty Five Thousand Earthquakes

Around 25,000 earthquakes have registered on Icelandic Met Office’s equipment since August 29. The eruption is one of the largest in the world. All in all 39 quakes over 5.0 have been recorded, most of them in the rim of the Bárðarbunga crater. The eruption itself is to the north of the sub-glacial volcano which makes a lot of difference, because that means the ash and flood danger is limited. On Monday a quake of magnitude 5.5 occurred, the second biggest from to beginning of the eruption. Volcanologist Ármann Höskuldsson says that the eruption is not only big but interesting in other respects as well: “The flow of magma to the surface is extensive and the lava fountains are going high up in the air. The flow of poisonous gas is also unusually high. We have to go back to the Lakagígar eruption to find anything similar”.

France has declared about 60 towns in the south of the country natural disaster areas following recent flooding in the region. “We will put in place natural disaster measures for about 60 towns,” Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve confirmed on Tuesday, adding that he would head to the flood-hit region later in the day. Torrential downpours inundated a wide region of the country including the Mediterranean city of Montpellier in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. Meteorologists posted record-breaking downpours in Montpellier. “In a few hours Montpellier had the equivalent of half a year’s worth of rain,” Meteo-France said. Nearly 12 inches (about 30 centimeters) of rain fell yesterday and broke all records dating back to 1957, the national weather office added. The local government said emergency workers were dispatched over 1,200 times, backed up by three helicopters. The severe weather forced more than 4,000 people across the region to seek shelter in emergency centers and schools or train stations and airports.

Headline:   New tremors reported at deadly Japan volcano

Increased seismic activity raised concern Tuesday about the possibility of another eruption at a Japanese volcano where 36 people were killed, forcing rescuers to suspend plans to try to recover at least two dozen bodies still near the summit. Volcanic tremors rose to a level not seen since Saturday evening, hours after Mount Ontake’s initial large eruption, said Shoji Saito of the Japan Meteorological Agency. The tremor levels were oscillating up and down. “At this point, anything can happen,” Saito said, though he stopped short of predicting another large eruption. About 80 to 100 relatives and friends of those who never returned from the summit were waiting for news in a municipal hall in the nearby central Japanese town of Kiso. Rescuers found five more bodies on Monday, bringing the death toll to 36. They have managed to airlift only 12 bodies off the mountain since the start of the eruption on Saturday because of dangerous conditions.
