Israel has locked one of its border crossing with the neighboring Syria declaring part of the Golan Heights a closed military zone, fearing that intensifying battles and violence in Syria will spread to the Israeli occupied territory. The Quneitra crossing, primarily serving UN peacekeeping forces was closed “for security reasons,” an army spokeswoman announced saying that fierce fighting could affect the area, especially farmers. The decision to close off the area was based on the IDF Northern Command’s intelligence assessment of the battles in Syria and the possibility of mortar attacks close to the crossing. The closure is expected to continue for two weeks, Walla News reports. Israel is already coping with the consequences of fighting on the Syrian side close to its border. Earlier this year, in southwestern Syria, insurgents established the Southern Front. It is estimated that this force includes some 30,000 fighters from more than 55 rebel groups.

A senior official of Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction arrived in Gaza on Tuesday, to discuss the unity government with terrorist group Hamas that is to be established by the end of May. Fatah signed a reconciliation agreement in late April with Hamas, the group that violently removed it from Gaza in 2007, in a move that torpedoed peace talks between the PA and Israel. “I will meet over the next two days with Hamas leaders to discuss forming a government,” senior Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmed told AFP after he arrived in Gaza through the Erez border crossing. The PA and Hamas are to form an “independent government” of technocrats according to the deal. However, the chances of true reconciliation between the rival groups remains in doubt. A senior PA official on Sunday said that Abbas told US National Security Adviser Susan Rice last week Hamas will not be part of the unity government, adding that the terror group does not need to recognize Israel or renounce terror. Abbas has stated that the unity government will be under his control.

The Knesset Committee for Foreign Affairs discussed the controversy surrounding a possible transfer of King David’s Tomb to the Vatican on Tuesday, after an emotional protest Monday night outside the holy site. During the debate, MK Meir Porush (UTJ) turned to Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman and asked whether or not the rumors were true. Apparently, Liberman denied the reports. “The Foreign Minister replied emphatically that there is no substance to the rumors that Israel going to hand over parts of David’s Tomb to the Vatican during the Pope’s visit,” a statement from Porush’s office said. Monday, hundreds of hareidi Jews gathered outside King David’s Tomb, which is located on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, to protest a rumored land transfer. Concerns over a possible transfer of the property have been raised multiple times over the past several months. Last month, an Israeli diplomatic source told Arutz Sheva that the Israeli government has no intention of transferring control over the site to the Church; those claims were reiterated Sunday, by the office of the Sephardi Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef. However, Rabbi Yaakov Sevilia, an activist for King David’s Tomb, told Arutz Sheva that there is a deal in the works – which would see David’s Tomb given to Christians, and the Temple Mount to Muslims. He cited journalist Gulio Meotti, who contributes regularly to Arutz Sheva, as the source for this knowledge.

The comments by Sisi were made in an interview to Sky News, the same interview in which he stated that, if elected, he would be willing to consider making changes to the peace agreement with Israel. “There is a real opportunity to establish peace with Israel and for it to be able to exist naturally in the region, if it accepts the Arab Peace Initiative,” he said, referring to the initiative presented in 2002 by Saudi Arabia, and which demands that Israel withdraw completely from Judea and Samaria, at which point the 22 Arab countries would supposedly normalize relations with Israel. International Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi will step down on May 31 after nearly two years of seeking an end to “the brutal and still worsening” civil war, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday. For more than a year, Brahimi has made no secret that he is contemplating stepping down from the post as the United Nations and Arab League joint special representative on Syria. Brahimi is due to brief the United Nations Security Council later on Tuesday. “It’s not very pleasant for me. It’s very sad that I leave this position and leave Syria behind in such a bad state,” Brahimi told reporters after Ban made the announcement. Ban said he would work on finding someone to replace Brahimi to try to bring an end to the three-year civil war in Syria.

Headline: Group accuses Syria of dropping chlorine on rebels towns
An international human rights group said Tuesday it has strong evidence that Syrian army helicopters dropped bombs carrying chlorine gas on three rebel-held towns last month.
The report by the New York-based Human Rights Watch adds to concerns that chemical weapons are still being used in Syria, eight months after a chemical attack killed hundreds of civilians in the suburbs of the capital, Damascus. The Syrian government did not immediately comment on the HRW claims. It has accused rebels of using chlorine gas in the past.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which monitors the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, sent a team to Syria this month to investigate the chlorine claims. OPCW spokesman Michael Luhan declined to comment on the Human Rights Watch report. “We are there to do our own, independent fact finding mission,” he said. In its report, Human Rights Watch said that forces loyal to President Bashar Assad likely used chlorine gas packed into crude bombs in attacks in mid-April on three towns near a military base in northern Syria. Those attacks killed at least 11 people, and wounded as many as 500, it said.

Earlier today Russia said new European Union sanctions will hinder efforts to defuse the crisis in Ukraine and urged the West to persuade Kiev to hold discussions on the country’s future structure before a May 25th presidential election. The results of self-rule referendums in the mainly Russian-speaking eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk “should be a clear signal to Kiev of the depth of the crisis” in Ukraine, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement. The Kremlin has stopped short of endorsing independence for the regions or their absorption into Russia but has said the referendums underscore the need for talks between the pro-Western government and separatists from the east. Meanwhile, the U.S. government released new satellite pictures on Tuesday which it said showed Russian forces were still near the Ukrainian border in recent days, contradicting Russian assertions they had been withdrawn.

The Iranian military says that it has fully reverse engineered a downed U.S. drone and armed it with missiles “to attack the U.S. warships in any possible battle.” The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made the announcement on Sunday as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei toured an IRGC military compound to view the new drones, according to reports in Iran’s state-run media. Iran also revealed over the weekend the existence of new ballistic missiles and an air defense system that can reportedly destroy multiple targets at once. The unveiling of the new drone has been met with particular fanfare by the IRGC, which announced more than two years ago that it had successfully downed an RQ-170 drone built by Lockheed Martin. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threw a large spanner in the works of nuclear diplomacy Sunday, May 11. Less than a week before the next round of talks with the six powers, he said: “The Revolutionary Guards should definitely… not be satisfied with the present level [of missile production]. Late last week, in what should not have been a surprise to anyone (because supposedly it was announced “far in advance”) but was a major shock due to its intensity and expansiveness, Russia held a massive “simulated massive nuclear attack” drill, coming at a time just ahead of the Donetsk referendum, which may have been pre-scheduled and for foreign policy reasons was hailed as a “non-event”, but judging by the amount of production that went into the accompanying video clip, this particular drill was dripping with symbolism aimed squarely at NATO and the US. So now it is America’s turn to retaliate. As the U.S. Strategic Command reported earlier, the US will conduct Exercise Global Lightning 14 from May 12-16 in coordination with other combatant commands, services, and appropriate U.S. government agencies “to deter and detect strategic attacks against the U.S. and its allies.” Stratcom was quick to point out that Exercise Global Lightning 14 has been planned for more than a year and is based on a notional scenario. It also added that the “timing of the exercise is unrelated to real-world events” but only those who believed that Russia massive nuclear drill was also unrelated to world will fall for this particular embellishment. As Defense One observes, according to Mark Schneider, a former U.S. Defense Department nuclear strategy official, told the Washington Free Beacon that Russia’s drill last week seemed aimed at sending a message of “nuclear intimidation” to the United States and NATO over Ukraine.

The US has warned China that moving a drilling rig into seas disputed with Vietnam was “provocative”. In a telephone call, US Secretary of State John Kerry told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi the US had “strong concerns” over recent developments. Last week, Chinese and Vietnamese ships clashed over the drilling rig that China has placed in waters near the disputed Paracel Islands. China and Manila are also at odds over overlapping territorial claims. Beijing claims a U-shaped swathe of the South China Sea that covers areas other South East Asian nations say are their territory. The issue has been rumbling in recent years amid an increasingly assertive stance from China over its claims. Meanwhile, The Chinese and Russian navies will hold a joint drill in the northern East China Sea in late May, the Chinese navy announced Tuesday. Spokesman Liang Yang specifically noted the drills, May 20 to 26, will not target any third party. China has recently been at odds with Japan and Vietnam over territorial rights to islands and waterways shared by the countries. He added the drills, called “Joint Sea-2014,” will involve 14 vessels, two submarines, aircraft, helicopters, and special forces from both sides. They will focus on actions that include the freeing of hijacked ships, defense and attack maneuvers, escorts, and search and rescue operations.

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has taken a man’s life in Jordan, the country’s health ministry says. The Jordanian Health Ministry said on Monday that the man, in his 50s, worked in a private hospital and died on Sunday. The latest death brought to five the number of fatalities in Jordan from MERS since it first appeared in 2012. The announcement came after Saudi Arabia on Sunday reported three new deaths from the disease. The total death toll from MERS in Saudi Arabia reached 142. The number of infections in the kingdom stands at 483. On Monday, US health officials said a second case of MERS has been found in the state of Florida. Meanwhile, Health and infectious disease experts met at the World Health Organization on Tuesday to discuss whether a deadly virus that emerged in the Middle East in 2012 now constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern.” The virus, which causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome or MERS infections in people, has been reported in more than 500 patients in Saudi Arabia alone and spread throughout the region in sporadic cases and into Europe, Asia and the United States.

A measles outbreak in Ohio has reached 68 cases, giving the state the dubious distinction of having the most cases reported in any state since 1996, health officials say. The Ohio outbreak is part of a larger worrisome picture: As of Friday, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had logged 187 cases nationwide in 2014, closing in on last year’s total of 189. CDC warned several weeks ago that the country could end up having the worst year for measles since home-grown outbreaks were eradicated in 2000. The last time a state had more measles cases than Ohio has now was 1996, when Utah had 119, according to CDC. The Ohio outbreak, like ongoing outbreaks in California and elsewhere, has been linked to unvaccinated travelers bringing the measles virus back from countries where the disease remains common. In Ohio, all of the cases have been among the Amish, health officials say. The outbreak began after Amish missionaries returned from the Philippines. The Philippines is experiencing a large, ongoing measles outbreak with more than 26,000 cases reported, according to CDC.

Computer games company Nintendo has apologised for leaving same-sex relationships out of a ‘life simulator’ game after criticism by equality activists. Protestors attacked the publisher for not including the option of having gay relationships in Tomodachi Life, a Sims-style title which lets players create characters and populate and island with them. Marketing material for the game, which is for the handheld 3DS console, boasts the the cartoonish characters can ‘rap, rock, eat donuts, fall in love, break up, go shopping, play games, and live their crazy lives’. However, American gamer Tye Marini, 23, found that there was an element of his life he could not recreate in the game – his relationship with his boyfriend. Mr Marini uploaded a video saying: ‘I wanted to be able to marry my real-life fiance’s Mii. You import your personalised characters into the game. You name them. ‘You give them a personality. You give them a voice. They just can’t fall in love if they’re gay.’ But although the company accepted that it had failed to ‘represent’ its audience fully, it said it was not possible to add a gay marriage feature into the game after it has completed. It instead pledged to add the option to marry within the same sex should it release a sequel to Tomodachi Life, which was released last year in Japan and will released in America and Europe next month.

The first same-sex couples have been married in the US state of Arkansas, after a judge threw out a voter-approved ban on gay marriage. The roughly 100 couples were the first in the states of the traditionally conservative south-east to be wed. Pulaski County circuit judge Chris Piazza ruled on Friday that the 2004 ban amounted to the unconstitutional “exclusion of a minority”. The state’s attorney general has appealed against the ruling. On Monday, Texas residents Shelly Butler and Susan Barr, who have been together for almost 30 years, became the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license in the state of Arkansas, and thereby in the south-east region and the states of the Civil War-era Confederacy.

Luke 21:9 and Matthew 24:7 speak of nation against nation and kingdom against kingdom in the end times. Revelation 6:3-4 speaks of the fiery red horse given power to make men slay one another and Revelation 6:8 speaks again of this red horse in conjunction with the pale horse of Death and Hades, as the one that has the power to kill by sword. Luke 21:9: wars & commotions; the Greek word here is Akatastasia, meaning instability, a state of disorder, disturbance, confusion (revolutions) Matthew 24:7: the Greek word for nation is Ethnos & refers to various ethnic groups fighting among themselves, where the next sentence in the verse refers to kingdoms (basileiva) fighting one another (not to be confused with an actual kingdom but rather the right or authority to rule over a kingdom)

On Tuesday, protesters tried to block a main highway in the city during a march on a restricted zone where demonstrations are not permitted. Police responded by firing tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd. Venezuelan authorities said protesters did not have permission to stage the march through the capital. In addition to marking three months of protests, the demonstrators also demanded the release of student protesters who have been arrested during that time.

U.S. reconnaissance aircraft were flying Tuesday over Nigeria in the search for nearly 300 kidnapped schoolgirls, a day after the Boko Haram militant group released the first evidence that at least some of them are still alive and demanded that jailed fighters be swapped for their freedom. A Nigerian government official said “all options” were open in the effort to free the girls, who were shown fearful and huddled together dressed in gray Islamic veils as they sang Quranic verses under the guns of their captors in a video released Monday. The footage was verified as authentic by Nigerian authorities, who said 54 of the girls had been identified by relatives, teachers and classmates who watched the video late Tuesday. The abduction has spurred a global movement to secure the girls’ release amid fears they would be sold into slavery, married off to fighters or worse following a series of threats by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau. Protesters marched through the streets of the capital, Abuja, Tuesday to demand more government action to find and free the girls, who are believed to be held in the vast Sambisi forest some 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the eastern town of Chibok, where they were seized from their school on April 15.
