Iran’s government is intentionally attacking and trying to cause chaos specifically to force the appearance of their Messiah the Mahdi, specifically the Twelfth Imam in Twelver Shiite Islam. Shiite Muslims believe he is in occultation (hidden) and will eventually return. Iran’s leaders believe causing this type of chaos will speed up the mahdi’s return to destroy Israel and Iran’s enemies.
