Headline: Israel declares part of occupied Golan Heights closed military zone
Headline: Israel reiterates non-intervention policy in Syria’s conflict
Israel has locked one of its border crossing with the neighboring Syria declaring part of the Golan Heights a closed military zone, fearing that intensifying battles and violence in Syria will spread to the Israeli occupied territory. The Quneitra crossing, primarily serving UN peacekeeping forces was closed “for security reasons,” an army spokeswoman announced saying that fierce fighting could affect the area, especially farmers. The decision to close off the area was based on the IDF Northern Command’s intelligence assessment of the battles in Syria and the possibility of mortar attacks close to the crossing. The closure is expected to continue for two weeks, Walla News reports. Israel is already coping with the consequences of fighting on the Syrian side close to its border. Earlier this year, in southwestern Syria, insurgents established the Southern Front. It is estimated that this force includes some 30,000 fighters from more than 55 rebel groups.

Headline: Fatah Official in Gaza to Form Unity Government
Headline: Jimmy Carter hails Palestinian unity deal as opportunity for Israel to forge peace
A senior official of Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah faction arrived in Gaza on Tuesday, to discuss the unity government with terrorist group Hamas that is to be established by the end of May. Fatah signed a reconciliation agreement in late April with Hamas, the group that violently removed it from Gaza in 2007, in a move that torpedoed peace talks between the PA and Israel. “I will meet over the next two days with Hamas leaders to discuss forming a government,” senior Fatah official Azzam al-Ahmed told AFP after he arrived in Gaza through the Erez border crossing. The PA and Hamas are to form an “independent government” of technocrats according to the deal. However, the chances of true reconciliation between the rival groups remains in doubt. A senior PA official on Sunday said that Abbas told US National Security Adviser Susan Rice last week Hamas will not be part of the unity government, adding that the terror group does not need to recognize Israel or renounce terror. Abbas has stated that the unity government will be under his control.

Headline:Liberman Denies King David’s Tomb Transfer
The Knesset Committee for Foreign Affairs discussed the controversy surrounding a possible transfer of King David’s Tomb to the Vatican on Tuesday, after an emotional protest Monday night outside the holy site. During the debate, MK Meir Porush (UTJ) turned to Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman and asked whether or not the rumors were true. Apparently, Liberman denied the reports. “The Foreign Minister replied emphatically that there is no substance to the rumors that Israel going to hand over parts of David’s Tomb to the Vatican during the Pope’s visit,” a statement from Porush’s office said. Monday, hundreds of hareidi Jews gathered outside King David’s Tomb, which is located on Mount Zion in Jerusalem, to protest a rumored land transfer. Concerns over a possible transfer of the property have been raised multiple times over the past several months. Last month, an Israeli diplomatic source told Arutz Sheva that the Israeli government has no intention of transferring control over the site to the Church; those claims were reiterated Sunday, by the office of the Sephardi Chief Rabbi, Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef. However, Rabbi Yaakov Sevilia, an activist for King David’s Tomb, told Arutz Sheva that there is a deal in the works – which would see David’s Tomb given to Christians, and the Temple Mount to Muslims. He cited journalist Gulio Meotti, who contributes regularly to Arutz Sheva, as the source for this knowledge.

Participants were divided over the legitimacy of Hezbollah’s arms during a conference discussing the Bkirki National Charter Monday, as others stressed the importance of the memorandum calling for the revival of National Dialogue between the various political parties. The Israeli threat to Lebanon, the inability of the Lebanese Army to defend the country and the recent emergence of extremist groups “has made the arms of the resistance today more than an obligation and a necessity,” said retired Brig. Gen. Amine Hoteit, a supporter of Hezbollah. According to Hoteit, it is “unacceptable” to propose that Hezbollah give up its weapons before the Lebanese government is able to replace it with another force that can defend the country.

Sisi last week warned newspaper editors not to press for freedom of speech. He said demands for greater freedom would jeopardize national security. Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, the leading candidate in the race for Egypt’s presidency, said Monday that there is a chance for “true peace” with Israel, if it adopts the 2002 Arab Peace Initiative. The comments by Sisi were made in an interview to Sky News, the same interview in which he stated that, if elected, he would be willing to consider making changes to the peace agreement with Israel. “There is a real opportunity to establish peace with Israel and for it to be able to exist naturally in the region, if it accepts the Arab Peace Initiative,” he said, referring to the initiative presented in 2002 by Saudi Arabia, and which demands that Israel withdraw completely from Judea and Samaria, at which point the 22 Arab countries would supposedly normalize relations with Israel. Similar comments were made last week by Egypt’s former foreign minister, Amr Moussa, though he made his comments in the context of Hamas, which he said must recognize the existence of Israel in order to make it possible to move forward with a Palestinian state.

International Syria mediator Lakhdar Brahimi will step down on May 31 after nearly two years of seeking an end to “the brutal and still worsening” civil war, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Tuesday. For more than a year, Brahimi has made no secret that he is contemplating stepping down from the post as the United Nations and Arab League joint special representative on Syria. Brahimi is due to brief the United Nations Security Council later on Tuesday. “It’s not very pleasant for me. It’s very sad that I leave this position and leave Syria behind in such a bad state,” Brahimi told reporters after Ban made the announcement. Ban said he would work on finding someone to replace Brahimi to try to bring an end to the three-year civil war in Syria.

They have dubbed their offensive “Levant of the Prophet. Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon and senior commanders visited the Golan Tuesday, May 13, to survey the rebel offensive. For the third day running, Israel has kept the Quneitra crossing into the Syrian sector closed as a military zone. The off-limits area includes parts of the enclave’s Rtes 98 and 91 and Kibbutz Ei Zivan. “Syrian rebels have pushed the Assad’s military into a corner,” the defense minister commented. “To the east, we are seeing destruction and death, and sometimes, the injured come to us for medical treatment. Headline: Group accuses Syria of dropping chlorine on rebels towns
An international human rights group said Tuesday it has strong evidence that Syrian army helicopters dropped bombs carrying chlorine gas on three rebel-held towns last month.
The report by the New York-based Human Rights Watch adds to concerns that chemical weapons are still being used in Syria, eight months after a chemical attack killed hundreds of civilians in the suburbs of the capital, Damascus. The Syrian government did not immediately comment on the HRW claims. It has accused rebels of using chlorine gas in the past.
The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which monitors the implementation of the Chemical Weapons Convention, sent a team to Syria this month to investigate the chlorine claims. OPCW spokesman Michael Luhan declined to comment on the Human Rights Watch report. “We are there to do our own, independent fact finding mission,” he said. In its report, Human Rights Watch said that forces loyal to President Bashar Assad likely used chlorine gas packed into crude bombs in attacks in mid-April on three towns near a military base in northern Syria. Those attacks killed at least 11 people, and wounded as many as 500, it said.

It said an armoured column had come under fire as it approached a bridge. Two were killed when an armoured car was hit and four others in an ensuing gunfight, a ministry statement said. Earlier today Russia said new European Union sanctions will hinder efforts to defuse the crisis in Ukraine and urged the West to persuade Kiev to hold discussions on the country’s future structure before a May 25th presidential election. The results of self-rule referendums in the mainly Russian-speaking eastern regions of Donetsk and Luhansk “should be a clear signal to Kiev of the depth of the crisis” in Ukraine, the Russian foreign ministry said in a statement. The Kremlin has stopped short of endorsing independence for the regions or their absorption into Russia but has said the referendums underscore the need for talks between the pro-Western government and separatists from the east. Meanwhile, the U.S. government released new satellite pictures on Tuesday which it said showed Russian forces were still near the Ukrainian border in recent days, contradicting Russian assertions they had been withdrawn.

The Iranian military says that it has fully reverse engineered a downed U.S. drone and armed it with missiles “to attack the U.S. warships in any possible battle.” The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) made the announcement on Sunday as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei toured an IRGC military compound to view the new drones, according to reports in Iran’s state-run media. Iran also revealed over the weekend the existence of new ballistic missiles and an air defense system that can reportedly destroy multiple targets at once. The unveiling of the new drone has been met with particular fanfare by the IRGC, which announced more than two years ago that it had successfully downed an RQ-170 drone built by Lockheed Martin. Meanwhile, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei threw a large spanner in the works of nuclear diplomacy Sunday, May 11. Less than a week before the next round of talks with the six powers, he said: “The Revolutionary Guards should definitely… not be satisfied with the present level [of missile production]. They should mass produce.” Referring to Western concerns that Iran is designing missiles able to carry nuclear warheads, Khamenei said: “They [the West] expect us to limit our missile program while they constantly threaten Iran with military action. So this is a stupid, idiotic expectation.”

Late last week, in what should not have been a surprise to anyone (because supposedly it was announced “far in advance”) but was a major shock due to its intensity and expansiveness, Russia held a massive “simulated massive nuclear attack” drill, coming at a time just ahead of the Donetsk referendum, which may have been pre-scheduled and for foreign policy reasons was hailed as a “non-event”, but judging by the amount of production that went into the accompanying video clip, this particular drill was dripping with symbolism aimed squarely at NATO and the US. So now it is America’s turn to retaliate. As the U.S. Strategic Command reported earlier, the US will conduct Exercise Global Lightning 14 from May 12-16 in coordination with other combatant commands, services, and appropriate U.S. government agencies “to deter and detect strategic attacks against the U.S. and its allies.” Stratcom was quick to point out that Exercise Global Lightning 14 has been planned for more than a year and is based on a notional scenario. It also added that the “timing of the exercise is unrelated to real-world events” but only those who believed that Russia massive nuclear drill was also unrelated to world will fall for this particular embellishment. As Defense One observes, according to Mark Schneider, a former U.S. Defense Department nuclear strategy official, told the Washington Free Beacon that Russia’s drill last week seemed aimed at sending a message of “nuclear intimidation” to the United States and NATO over Ukraine.

The US has warned China that moving a drilling rig into seas disputed with Vietnam was “provocative”. In a telephone call, US Secretary of State John Kerry told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi the US had “strong concerns” over recent developments. Last week, Chinese and Vietnamese ships clashed over the drilling rig that China has placed in waters near the disputed Paracel Islands. China and Manila are also at odds over overlapping territorial claims. Beijing claims a U-shaped swathe of the South China Sea that covers areas other South East Asian nations say are their territory. The issue has been rumbling in recent years amid an increasingly assertive stance from China over its claims. Meanwhile, The Chinese and Russian navies will hold a joint drill in the northern East China Sea in late May, the Chinese navy announced Tuesday. Spokesman Liang Yang specifically noted the drills, May 20 to 26, will not target any third party. China has recently been at odds with Japan and Vietnam over territorial rights to islands and waterways shared by the countries. He added the drills, called “Joint Sea-2014,” will involve 14 vessels, two submarines, aircraft, helicopters, and special forces from both sides. They will focus on actions that include the freeing of hijacked ships, defense and attack maneuvers, escorts, and search and rescue operations.

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) has taken a man’s life in Jordan, the country’s health ministry says. The Jordanian Health Ministry said on Monday that the man, in his 50s, worked in a private hospital and died on Sunday. The latest death brought to five the number of fatalities in Jordan from MERS since it first appeared in 2012. The announcement came after Saudi Arabia on Sunday reported three new deaths from the disease. The total death toll from MERS in Saudi Arabia reached 142. The number of infections in the kingdom stands at 483. On Monday, US health officials said a second case of MERS has been found in the state of Florida. Meanwhile, Health and infectious disease experts met at the World Health Organization on Tuesday to discuss whether a deadly virus that emerged in the Middle East in 2012 now constitutes a “public health emergency of international concern.” The virus, which causes Middle East Respiratory Syndrome or MERS infections in people, has been reported in more than 500 patients in Saudi Arabia alone and spread throughout the region in sporadic cases and into Europe, Asia and the United States.

A measles outbreak in Ohio has reached 68 cases, giving the state the dubious distinction of having the most cases reported in any state since 1996, health officials say. The Ohio outbreak is part of a larger worrisome picture: As of Friday, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had logged 187 cases nationwide in 2014, closing in on last year’s total of 189. CDC warned several weeks ago that the country could end up having the worst year for measles since home-grown outbreaks were eradicated in 2000. The last time a state had more measles cases than Ohio has now was 1996, when Utah had 119, according to CDC. The Ohio outbreak, like ongoing outbreaks in California and elsewhere, has been linked to unvaccinated travelers bringing the measles virus back from countries where the disease remains common. In Ohio, all of the cases have been among the Amish, health officials say. The outbreak began after Amish missionaries returned from the Philippines. The Philippines is experiencing a large, ongoing measles outbreak with more than 26,000 cases reported, according to CDC.

Computer games company Nintendo has apologised for leaving same-sex relationships out of a ‘life simulator’ game after criticism by equality activists. Protestors attacked the publisher for not including the option of having gay relationships in Tomodachi Life, a Sims-style title which lets players create characters and populate and island with them. Marketing material for the game, which is for the handheld 3DS console, boasts the the cartoonish characters can ‘rap, rock, eat donuts, fall in love, break up, go shopping, play games, and live their crazy lives’. However, American gamer Tye Marini, 23, found that there was an element of his life he could not recreate in the game – his relationship with his boyfriend. Mr Marini uploaded a video saying: ‘I wanted to be able to marry my real-life fiance’s Mii. You import your personalised characters into the game. You name them. ‘You give them a personality. You give them a voice. They just can’t fall in love if they’re gay.’ But although the company accepted that it had failed to ‘represent’ its audience fully, it said it was not possible to add a gay marriage feature into the game after it has completed. It instead pledged to add the option to marry within the same sex should it release a sequel to Tomodachi Life, which was released last year in Japan and will released in America and Europe next month.

The first same-sex couples have been married in the US state of Arkansas, after a judge threw out a voter-approved ban on gay marriage. The roughly 100 couples were the first in the states of the traditionally conservative south-east to be wed. Pulaski County circuit judge Chris Piazza ruled on Friday that the 2004 ban amounted to the unconstitutional “exclusion of a minority”. The state’s attorney general has appealed against the ruling. On Monday, Texas residents Shelly Butler and Susan Barr, who have been together for almost 30 years, became the first same-sex couple to receive a marriage license in the state of Arkansas, and thereby in the south-east region and the states of the Civil War-era Confederacy.

A Nigerian government official said “all options” were open in the effort to free the girls, who were shown fearful and huddled together dressed in gray Islamic veils as they sang Quranic verses under the guns of their captors in a video released Monday. The footage was verified as authentic by Nigerian authorities, who said 54 of the girls had been identified by relatives, teachers and classmates who watched the video late Tuesday. The abduction has spurred a global movement to secure the girls’ release amid fears they would be sold into slavery, married off to fighters or worse following a series of threats by Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau. Protesters marched through the streets of the capital, Abuja, Tuesday to demand more government action to find and free the girls, who are believed to be held in the vast Sambisi forest some 20 miles (30 kilometers) from the eastern town of Chibok, where they were seized from their school on April 15.

NASA Spots Worrisome Antarctic Ice Sheet Melt
Two new studies indicate that part of the huge West Antarctic ice sheet is starting a slow collapse in an unstoppable way. Alarmed scientists say that means even more sea level rise than they figured. This won’t happen fast. Scientists are talking hundreds of years, but over that time the melt that has started could eventually add 4 to 12 feet to current sea levels. That’s faster than scientists had predicted. A NASA study in the journal Geophysical Research Letters uses 40 years of observations and sees the falling apart of what had been an obstacle to major melt in the Thwaites glacier, about the size of New Mexico and Arizona combined. Mexico Earthquake Today 2014: Terremoto en Mexico Strikes Coast Near Acapulco USGS indicates to news that a 6.0 Mexico temblor today started just after 2:36 am local time. The terremoto en Mexico hoy was far more shallow than recent quakes. This one started only fourteen miles below sea level.
5.8 earthquake felt in Alaska The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck at 7:16 a.m. PDT on Saturday and was centred about 19 miles northwest of Anchor Point in the Cook Inlet region.

Headline: Rights groups urge Palestinians to join ICC
Human rights groups including Amnesty International on Thursday urged the Palestinians to sign up to the International Criminal Court. Seventeen local and international human rights organisations made the request in a joint letter to Palestinian leader Mahmud Abbas, Amnesty said. The London-based organisation said if the Palestinians “signed up to the Rome Statute of the ICC, the Court would have jurisdiction over war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on Palestinian territories and by its nationals elsewhere.”
The joint letter urged Abbas to “take the necessary steps for Palestine to become a party” to the ICC. “Doing so would sent an important message that entrenched impunity for war crimes and crimes against humanity committed on Palestinian territories must end once and for all,” said Philip Luther, Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa Programme director.

Headline: PA Insists: Hamas Will Not Be Part of ‘Unity’ Government
Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas stated in a PA TV interview Thursday night that Hamas, its unity pact partner, has not been asked to recognize Israel and will not be part of a transitional government that is to be built soon. Abbas also repeated his intention to erect an interim government which will, allegedly, recognize Israel and condemn violence and terror. Abbas’s announcement reiterates the growing cognitive and political dissonance between the two organizations. Hamas continues to be adamant over its full control of a “unity” government, expressing over and over again that it would remain in control of both Gaza and the PA after elections and insisting that Ismail Haniyeh would rule the government.

Reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah is apparently going well, despite the sharp rhetoric flying between the two groups, after Fatah agreed to release all Hamas terrorists in Palestinian Authority (PA) prisons as part of the deal. Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said in an interview with Palestine newspaper on Friday that Fatah had agreed to release all Hamas terrorists from prison – regardless of their crimes or current political affiliation. Meanwhile, Hamas has allegedly jumped on board as well – allowing journalists from Fatah-backed papers Al-Quds and Al-Ayyam to enter Gaza and releasing Fatah prisoners held in Gaza over their own political affiliations. Meanwhile, A lawmaker for the Hamas terrorist group which runs Gaza recently called for jihad against Israel in a Friday sermon. The lawmaker, Ahmad Abu Halabiya, said that jihad that this is the “one and only path” to conquer the Al-Aqsa Mosque and to liberate Jerusalem and “Palestine.”

Headline: Report: Netanyahu Promises Talmud Will Be Israeli Law
Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu reportedly revealed at a Likud conference on Wednesday some remarkable facets of the Basic Law he submitted last Thursday, which would enshrine Israel’s status as the nation-state of the Jewish people. Netanyahu told the head of Likud’s hareidi division Yaakov Vider at the conference that he intends to make the Hebrew calendar, which is based on Jewish law, the official calendar of Israel, reports Kikar Hashabat. The new law also would establish the Talmud, the core work of Jewish law, as an official basis for Israeli state law. “I’m going to personally be involved in the law defining the state of Israel as the nation-state of the Jewish people,” Netanyahu reportedly told Vider. “It’s a very important law that will influence how Israel will look in the future.”
For those who would like to know: The Torah is the first five books of the Bible. The Tanakh is the entire Hebrew bible (no New Testament) and the Talmud are collections of rabbinical commentaries on the Hebrew bible and Jewish history.

An Israeli newspaper is reporting that 70% of Ukraine’s Jewish community is now considering emigrating to Israel and that many are “flooding” the Israeli consulate to secure immigration visas in order to flee the country. This follows reports earlier this week that Jewish leaders in Odessa have put together an evacuation plan should anti-Semitic displays in the embattled Eastern European country escalate. Rabbi Avraham Wolf, who has served as chief rabbi of Odessa and southern Ukraine for 22 years, told the Yedioth Ahronoth daily that the emigration demand is unprecedented. “We experienced years of starvation and wars, and in all of those years I haven’t heard so much talk about making aliyah [moving to Israel] as I do now,” he said. Since the unrest began in Ukraine, there have been reports of anti-Jewish incidents including the fire-bombing of a synagogue, the defacement of a Holocaust memorial and the distribution of leaflets ordering Jews to register their religion, their property and to pay a fine, a document that was later characterized as a provocation.

Indyk insisted that both sides were guilty of bad faith and “not serious” about peace. “One problem that revealed itself in these past nine months is that the parties, although both showing flexibility in the negotiations, do not feel the pressing need to make the gut-wrenching compromises necessary to achieve peace,” Indyk said. “It is safe to say that if we, the U.S., are the only party that has a sense of urgency, these negotiations will not succeed.” Indyk also blamed bad public relations for the failure. “While serious efforts were under way behind closed doors, we tried to get the leaders and their spokesmen to engage in synchronized positive messaging to their publics,” he stated.

Palestinian Authority (PA) Chairman Mahmoud Abbas said on Thursday that he was ready to resume negotiations with Israel but, as he has done in the past, placed preconditions.
Speaking in a television interview and quoted by the Ma’an news agency, Abbas conditioned a return to talks on Israel releasing the fourth batch of terrorist prisoners and freezing construction in Judea and Samaria for three months. Israel cancelled the fourth terrorist release “gesture” in early April, after the PA requested to join 15 international agencies in breach of the conditions of the peace talks. Israel subsequently pulled out of the talks altogether, after the PA signed the unity pact with Hamas. Abbas said in Thursday’s interview that it was Israel that had halted the negotiations, and that Israel had threatened to stop allowing the transfer of funds to the Palestinian Authority, a threat he called a form of “gangsterism.”

A visit planned by the leader of Lebanon’s largest Christian sect to Jerusalem to meet Pope Francis has unleashed a barrage of criticism in the Arab country, which remains at war with Israel. Cardinal Bechara Rai, head of Lebanon’s Maronite Catholic church, will be the first leader of the church to visit Jerusalem since the Arab part of the contested city was captured by Israel in a 1967 war. Francis will start a three-day pilgrimage to Jordan, the West Bank and Israel on May 24. Lebanon bans its citizens from visiting Israel or having business dealings with Israelis. The Lebanese media went on the attack following the announcement, with As Safir, the country’s leading daily newspaper, dubbing the visit “a historic sin.” Pierre Abi Saab, the deputy editor-in-chief of the daily Al-Akhbar, accused Rai in a recent editorial of setting “a dangerous precedent,” opening a “door to all believers who are eager to visit the holy places.” He called on the cleric to reconsider a trip that would “humanize (Israeli) occupation of Palestinian territories until “the hour of liberation comes.”

As if bad weather weren’t enough, beekeepers like the Riley’s will tell you there’s an even more dangerous bee killer out there: pesticides farmers use in their fields. “They don’t kill them all at once. It’s a slow kill. They’ll go in in the winter, and by spring they’re dead,” said Perry. Purdue University says bees are dying by the thousands. A dry spring means the pesticides can be wind blown onto plants like dandelions. When bees come to pollinate, they’re in essence covered in poison, which they take back to their hives.

A giant beehive was found dead in a backyard Santa Barbara house in February. The beehive had been there for over 11 years, but a few months ago residents found hundreds of the bees dead near the hive. “According to our Santa Barbara beekeeper member, she had seen quite a few bees had been struggling and twitching. She had a pretty good feeling that it was due to some sort of pesticide exposure,” said Todd Bebee, president of Santa Barbara Beekeepers Association. Samples of the beehive were taken on Thursday and shipped to Penn State. Maryann Frazier,country’s leading entomologist, will research the case and will have results within three to four weeks. But there has been a steady rise in gay and bisexual men catching the disease. They account for most of the recent infectious cases. Since 2005, the rate in men has nearly doubled. It is much lower in women and hasn’t changed much. Syphilis is a potentially deadly bacterial disease that surfaces as genital sores. It was far more common until antibiotics became available in the 1940s, slashing the number of annual cases to below 6,000.
Last year, there were nearly 17,000 cases.

The Jois Foundation, also known as Somina, has partnered with the district “to develop an Ashtanga yoga program to replace traditional physical education,” according to the brief filed on behalf of students and parents in the district. Among the founders was Sonia Tudor Jones, an ardent devotee of yoga who wanted to “spread the gospel of Ashtanga through the country and even internationally.” Jones worked on a plan for a three-year “scientific study” in the schools using the religious program. When the lawsuit was heard, the trial court judge “acknowledged that, although not structured as a religious foundation per se, Jois/Sonima is ‘deeply involved in yoga and Ashtanga yoga’ and ‘has a mission to establish and teach Ashtanga yoga,’” the plaintiffs explained. In a first, American atheists are planning to launch a television channel, dedicated exclusively for non-believers, to propagate godlessness. The on-demand TV channel will be launched this summer by New Jersey-based atheist groups. It aims to reach out to atheists, humanists, freethinkers and others who are simply looking for a way out of faith.
American Atheists, the organization behind the endeavor, has said that it is time that America has such a platform for non-believes. “There’s a glut of religious TV programming out there, from televangelists to Christmas specials,” New York Daily News quoted spokesman Dave Muscato as saying. “But there’s no atheist channel. We wanted to fill that void.”
The newspaper notes that the new channel, named AtheistTV, will make use of contents from their own homegrown shows, as well as archive of footage from the past 50 years, which saw the philosophy of atheism grow. American Atheists already have a production studio in Cranford, NJ, where they make their cable show, called “Atheist Viewpoint”, which is distributed to 50 markets across the United States.

Headline: Tornadoes hit Colorado, Minnesota
A line of widely scattered strong storms brought tornadoes to Colorado and Minnesota on Thursday and damaging high winds as far south as Texas. Three tornadoes stuck Minnesota. One hit near rural St. James. Kholby Martin, a storm chaser with KDR Media, said it was a couple of hundred yards wide but it wasn’t fully condensed. Officials said no one was hurt, nor was there any structural damage. Two tornadoes touched down in Colorado. There was still a possibility of tornadoes in south central Minnesota and central Iowa on Thursday night. Dallas County in Texas saw an hourlong tornado warning Thursday afternoon as the system moved through, bringing winds of up to 70 mph, the National Weather Service said. Students at Southern Methodist University were told to shelter in place. That was followed by a flash flood warning for several counties in the area through the early evening hours.

Police in Argentina’s northeastern province of Chaco have clashed with council workers protesting for higher wages. Clashes broke out on Wednesday after hundreds of members of trade unions gathered at the central square of the provincial capital, Resistencia, to demand a pay rise. Police fired rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators as they tried to march toward a government building. Some of the protesters responded by hurling rocks at the police. According to local media reports, a number of people suffered injuries during the clashes.

Reports say at least five people were injured in the scuffles between police and protesters. Anti-government protesters say the removal of the premier will not solve the country’s political crisis. The developments came two days after the Constitutional Court ousted Yingluck Shinawatra and nine members of her Cabinet over abuse of power.

Headline: Haitian students clash with police during protest
Clashes have erupted in the Haitian capital, Port-au-Prince, between police and students protesting in support of striking teachers involved in a wage dispute with the government.
Haitian teachers have been on a strike over the past three days, weeks ahead of national exams at schools. They are protesting the government’s failure to give them a promised wage raise of up to 50 percent. The Haitian Education Ministry says the wage increases demanded by the teachers will not come into effect until a new budget is approved by the Senate of the Caribbean country. Hundreds of high school students, many of them in their school uniforms, marched near the capital’s National Palace on Wednesday to vent their frustration on canceled classes.

Seismic monitoring sensors sent to western Alaska
NOME, Alaska — Scientists comprising a “rapid response” team have been sent to two communities in western Alaska to get earthquake monitoring equipment in the ground.
KNOM reports (http://is.gd/zSGlsI) this is in response to two recent earthquakes on the western side of the Brooks Range, an area that doesn’t usually experience seismic activity.
A series of small earthquakes and aftershocks were recorded Saturday several dozen miles northeast of the 500-strong community of Noatak. The strongest was magnitude 5.5. This came on top of a 5.6 earthquake in the same area last month.
The monitoring equipment is being installed in Noatak and Kotzebue. A small earthquake was widely felt around the Los Angeles area but officials say there have been no immediate reports of serious damage. The U.S. Geological survey says the magnitude 3.3 temblor struck at 11:39 p.m. PDT Wednesday and was centered near Cudahy, a few miles south of downtown Los Angeles. Scientists Create 1st Living Organism From Artificial DNA
WEDNESDAY, May 7, 2014 (HealthDay News) — Move over, Frankenstein! Your 21st-century counterpart has just been announced. In true sci-fi fashion, a team of researchers from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in La Jolla, Calif., has created a brand-new bacteria based on a genetic structure found nowhere on Earth. According to lead researcher Floyd Romesberg, the feat involved artificially engineering a unique combination of DNA material — a combination not found in any living creature — and then successfully inserting it into a living cell that usually contains only natural combinations of DNA. “Life on Earth in all its diversity is encoded by only two pairs of DNA bases, A-T and C-G,” Romesberg explained in an institute news release. “And what we’ve made is an organism that stably contains those two plus a third, unnatural pair of bases.” “This shows that other solutions to storing [genetic] information are possible,” he added, “and, of course, takes us closer to an expanded-DNA biology that will have many exciting applications — from new medicines to new kinds of nanotechnology.” Romesberg and his colleagues discuss their handiwork — funded in part by the U.S. National Institutes of Health — in the May 7 online edition of Nature.
