Shabbat Commanded (1313 BCE)
Following the descent of the manna (the miraculous “Bread from Heaven” that sustained the Israelites in the desert), G-d commanded the Children of Israel to keep the Shabbat. This Shabbat was the 22nd of Iyar, of the year 2448 from Creation (1313 BCE) (see “Today in Jewish History” for Iyar 15).
On that Friday morning, enough manna fell for two days’ worth of meals, as on the Shabbat it would be prohibited to gather the manna. The “Two Loaves” of challah bread (Lechem Mishneh) that form the foundation of our Shabbat meal are in commemoration of the double portion of manna.

Headline: Israeli army breaks up Palestinian march on Jewish settlement

Israeli soldiers fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse about 500 Palestinian villagers marching toward a Jewish settlement outpost in the occupied West Bank on Friday. The procession, the largest of its kind for years, followed charges by Palestinians that the Israeli settlers, whose caravans abut village land, had attacked them twice this week. Around half a million settlers have moved to the West Bank and East Jerusalem since Israel captured the area, along with the Gaza Strip, in the 1967 Middle East War. Palestinians want the settlements gone from what they see as their future state.

Men from Deir Jareer, including Christian and Muslim clerics, gathered for Friday prayers on a craggy outcrop between their village and a cluster of half a dozen makeshift settler homes surrounded by Israeli army jeeps and soldiers. Their march, preceded by a group of stone-throwing youths, was repeatedly pushed back by salvoes of Israeli tear gas. Young boys howled from the effects of the tear gas and old men hitched up their robes to flee, holding onion slices to their noses.

Headline: Lebanese Army Increases Presence Along Border with Israel

The Lebanese army has increased its presence along the Lebanon-Israel border, the official Lebanese National News Agencyreported on Friday. According to the report, the IDF increased its presence along the border as well, and IAF aircraft were seen flying over Lebanese territory.

The news comes a day after an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) penetrated Israeli air space from Lebanon. The UAV was shot down by Israel about eight kilometers off the coast of Haifa.

Hizbullah was fingered as being behind the incident, but the terror group denied “sending any unmanned drone towards occupied Palestine.” Deputy Defense Minister Danny Danon promised that Israel would retaliate for the UAV flight into Israeli airspace.
