What Will the Antichrist be like when he appears? When Jesus Christ comes back and removes his believers, and the Antichrist begins his rule, anyone who hasn’t received Jesus as their Lord and Savior will be left behind to deal with the man of sin the Antichrist you should know what you’re going to be facing.
A Biblical Portrait of the Coming World Leader
Introduction
The Bible does not tell us exactly what the Antichrist will look like physically. Scripture does not tell us his height, hair color, eye color, nationality, or other physical characteristics.
What Scripture does reveal, however, is far more important: what kind of man he will be, how he will rise to power, how he will influence people, what abilities he will possess, and how he will ultimately reveal his true identity.
The Antichrist will not initially appear to the world as an obvious monster or openly announce himself as Satan’s servant. The biblical picture suggests a man who will be highly intelligent, persuasive, politically powerful, charismatic, calculating, deceptive, ambitious, and extraordinarily successful at gaining international influence.
His greatest weapon will not initially be military force. It will be deception.
1. He Will Be Extremely Intelligent and Clever
Daniel describes the coming ruler as a man who possesses unusual understanding and ability.
Daniel 8:23 says:
“A king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up.”
Daniel 7:8 describes him as having:
“a mouth speaking great things.”
These passages suggest someone capable of understanding complicated matters and communicating in a powerful way.
He will likely be an exceptionally skilled strategist and communicator. He will know how to analyze circumstances, recognize opportunities, and manipulate political situations to his advantage.
He will not be a foolish man.
2. He Will Be Charismatic and Persuasive
One of the most important characteristics of the Antichrist is his ability to influence people.
Daniel 7:20 speaks of the ruler who has:
“a mouth that spake very great things.”
Revelation 13:5 similarly says that the beast is given:
“a mouth speaking great things and blasphemies.”
His speeches will matter.
He will know how to communicate with the masses and convince people that his leadership is necessary. His words will be impressive enough to cause enormous numbers of people to follow him.
This is why the Antichrist should not be pictured merely as a brutal dictator who immediately takes power through violence.
He will be a master communicator and persuader.
3. He Will Be a Political Leader
Daniel’s prophecies present the Antichrist as a ruler connected with kingdoms and international political power.
Daniel 7:23 says:
“The fourth beast shall be the fourth kingdom upon earth.”
The ruler who emerges from this system ultimately becomes extraordinarily powerful.
Revelation 13:7 says:
“Power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.”
This is an enormous description of authority.
The Antichrist will not simply be the leader of a small country. His influence will become international.
4. He Will Be a Diplomat and Deal Maker
Daniel 9:27 says:
“And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week.”
This is one of the most significant things the Bible tells us about his rise.
The Antichrist will apparently enter into an important covenant or agreement involving many.
This indicates that he will be capable of operating at the highest level of international diplomacy.
He will know how to negotiate.
He will know how to make agreements.
He will know how to bring opposing groups together.
And he will initially appear to many people as someone capable of producing peace and stability.
5. He May Initially Appear to Be a Man Who Can Bring Peace
This is one of the most fascinating aspects of the biblical prophecy.
The Antichrist is associated with a covenant of peace or security that he later breaks.
Daniel 9:27 says that in the middle of the prophetic week:
“he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.”
This indicates that something dramatically changes during his reign.
He apparently begins with an agreement and then turns against it.
Therefore, his initial public image may be very different from what he ultimately becomes.
The man who appears to be the solution eventually becomes the greatest threat.
6. He Will Be Exceptionally Ambitious
The Antichrist will not be satisfied with ordinary political power.
Daniel 11:36 says:
“And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god.”
This reveals enormous ambition.
He will ultimately desire more than political authority.
He will desire worship.
His ambition will eventually become supernatural in its arrogance.
7. He Will Be Extremely Deceptive
Deception is one of the dominant characteristics associated with the Antichrist.
Daniel 8:25 says:
“Through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand.”
Daniel 11:21 says:
“he shall come in peaceably, and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.”
That phrase is extremely important.
“Obtain the kingdom by flatteries.”
He will know how to tell people what they want to hear.
He will understand people.
He will use diplomacy, promises, persuasion, and political calculation.
He will not necessarily seize everything through brute force.
He will deceive his way into power.
8. He Will Be a Master of Political Strategy
Daniel 11 repeatedly describes his ability to maneuver among nations.
Daniel 11:23 says:
“after the league made with him he shall work deceitfully.”
This is consistent with the picture found elsewhere in Scripture.
He will be calculating.
He will make agreements when they benefit him.
He will break agreements when they no longer serve his purposes.
He will use political relationships as instruments of his larger ambition.
9. He Will Be Fearlessly Bold
The Antichrist will possess enormous confidence.
Daniel 7:8 describes him as having:
“a mouth speaking great things.”
Daniel 11:36 says:
“he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself.”
He will not be timid.
He will not hesitate to challenge established religious and political authorities.
Eventually, he will openly oppose God.
10. He Will Be a Powerful Military Leader
Although deception and diplomacy are important parts of his rise, the Antichrist eventually becomes a formidable military power.
Daniel 11:40 describes kings coming against him:
“at the time of the end shall the king of the south push at him: and the king of the north shall come against him like a whirlwind.”
Revelation 13:4 says:
“who is able to make war with him?”
The Antichrist will eventually possess such extraordinary power that people will regard him as virtually unstoppable.
11. He Will Have Enormous International Influence
Revelation 13:7 is perhaps one of the clearest descriptions:
“Power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.”
His influence will cross:
- Political boundaries
- National boundaries
- Language barriers
- Cultural boundaries
He will become a truly international figure.
12. He Will Have an Extraordinary Ability to Attract Followers
Revelation 13:3 says:
“and all the world wondered after the beast.”
The world will be fascinated by him.
Revelation 13:4 says:
“they worshipped the beast.”
This demonstrates how successful his leadership will ultimately become.
People will not merely tolerate him.
Millions will admire, follow, and eventually worship him.
13. He Will Be Able to Exploit a Major Crisis
Revelation 13:3 says that the beast has a deadly wound that is healed, after which:
“all the world wondered after the beast.”
Whatever precise interpretation one takes of this passage, the result is clear: something extraordinary connected with the beast will dramatically increase his worldwide influence.
The world will be amazed.
His popularity and authority will increase dramatically.
14. He Will Eventually Reveal Himself as an Enemy of God
This is where the Antichrist’s character changes from deceptive political leader to openly rebellious ruler.
Daniel 11:36 says:
“he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god.”
Paul gives an even more striking description in 2 Thessalonians 2:3–4.
He calls him:
“the man of sin”
and
“the son of perdition.”
Paul says he:
“opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God.”
He eventually goes so far as to sit:
“in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.”
This is the ultimate destination of his ambition.
He will not merely want political control. He will demand divine honor.
15. He Will Be Associated With Satan
Revelation 13:2 says:
“the dragon gave him his power, and his seat, and great authority.”
The dragon is identified as Satan in Revelation 12:9.
Therefore, the Antichrist’s supernatural authority ultimately comes from Satan.
This explains why his influence will be so extraordinary.
He will be a human ruler empowered by a supernatural enemy of God.
16. He Will Perform or Be Associated With Great Signs
The Antichrist’s system will involve supernatural deception.
2 Thessalonians 2:9 says:
“whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders.”
Revelation 13:13–14 describes the second beast performing great signs and deceiving those who dwell on the earth.
The purpose of these signs will not be to glorify the true God.
They will be used to deceive people into accepting the Antichrist’s system.
17. He Will Be Ruthless
Although he may initially appear diplomatic and reasonable, the Bible ultimately reveals a very different character.
Daniel 7:25 says:
“he shall wear out the saints of the most High.”
Revelation 13:7 says:
“it was given unto him to make war with the saints, and to overcome them.”
This tells us that his government will eventually become violently oppressive.
The man who may initially promise security will eventually persecute those who refuse to worship him.
18. He Will Demand Worship
This is perhaps the clearest dividing line between the Antichrist and an ordinary political leader.
Revelation 13:8 says:
“And all that dwell upon the earth shall worship him.”
The Antichrist will eventually demand something that belongs only to God.
His ultimate objective will be worship.
19. He Will Control an Economic System
Revelation 13:16–17 says that he will cause people to receive a mark and that:
“no man might buy or sell, save he that had the mark.”
Therefore, his authority will extend beyond politics.
It will eventually affect:
- Commerce
- Buying and selling
- Economic participation
- Personal allegiance
- Religious allegiance
His government will become an extraordinarily comprehensive system of control.
20. What Will He Look Like Physically?
Here we need to be careful.
The Bible does not tell us what the Antichrist will physically look like.
Scripture does not say:
- He will be tall.
- He will be handsome.
- He will have dark hair.
- He will have a certain eye color.
- He will be European.
- He will be Middle Eastern.
- He will have a particular skin color.
Those ideas have appeared in books, movies, paintings, and prophetic speculation, but they should not be presented as biblical facts.
The Bible concentrates on his character and actions rather than his physical appearance.
So What Will the Antichrist Be Like?
Putting the biblical passages together, we get a remarkable portrait.
The Antichrist will be:
Intelligent — Daniel 8:23
Persuasive — Daniel 7:8; Daniel 11:21
Charismatic — Daniel 7:20; Revelation 13:3–4
Politically skilled — Daniel 11
Diplomatic — Daniel 9:27
A deal maker — Daniel 9:27
Deceptive — Daniel 8:25; Daniel 11:23
Extremely ambitious — Daniel 11:36
Proud and arrogant — Daniel 7:25; Daniel 11:36
An international leader — Revelation 13:7
A powerful military leader — Daniel 11:40–44
A master communicator — Daniel 7:8; Revelation 13:5
A deceiver — 2 Thessalonians 2:9–10
Ruthless toward God’s people — Daniel 7:25; Revelation 13:7
A persecutor — Revelation 13:7
A blasphemer — Revelation 13:5–6
A dictator — Revelation 13:7
A person who demands worship — Revelation 13:8
Ultimately a self-proclaimed god — 2 Thessalonians 2:4
The Most Important Point
Perhaps the greatest mistake would be to look for a man who looks evil.
The biblical description points in the opposite direction.
The Antichrist’s success depends upon his ability to persuade people.
He will be intelligent enough to understand world problems.
He will be charismatic enough to attract followers.
He will be politically skilled enough to negotiate with nations.
He will be persuasive enough to make agreements.
He will be deceptive enough to hide his true intentions.
And he will eventually possess enough power to demand worldwide allegiance.
His greatest deception may therefore be that he initially appears to be the answer to the world’s problems rather than the cause of its greatest catastrophe.
The Apostle Paul warns that the coming of the lawless one will be accompanied by:
“all power and signs and lying wonders”
and by
“deceivableness of unrighteousness.”
— 2 Thessalonians 2:9–10
The Bible’s warning is therefore not simply, “Watch for an evil-looking man.”
It is:
Watch for the man who can convince the world that he is the solution.
And ultimately, according to Scripture, his reign will end when Jesus Christ returns.
Revelation 19:19–20 describes the beast being defeated by Christ, bringing the Antichrist’s reign to its appointed end.
