Headline: Netanyahu Says Israel Will Not Cede Land to Palestinians
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel will not cede territory due to the current climate in the Middle East, appearing to rule out the establishment of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu said “any evacuated territory would fall into the hands of Islamic extremism and terror organizations supported by Iran. Therefore, there will be no concessions and no withdrawals. It is simply irrelevant.” The statement was released by his Likud party Sunday. Netanyahu is seeking to appeal to hard-liners ahead of elections next week. Party spokesman Elie Bennett says Netanyahu’s 2009 speech calling for a Palestinian state alongside Israel is not currently relevant. The international community has long pushed for the creation of a Palestinian state on lands captured by Israel in the 1967 Mideast war. Netanyahu’s spokesman declined comment.

Headline: PA Threatens Lawsuits Over ‘Settlements’, Gaza War
The Palestinian Authority (PA) is revving its motors, announcing that it is actively preparing legal documents against Israel in the International Criminal Court (ICC). The PA joined the Hague in December. Qais Abd al-Karim, Deputy Secretary General of the ”Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine” (DFLP) terror organization and a member of the National Commission in charge of ties between the PA and ICC, stated Monday that the Commission continues to vigorously prepare legal cases against Israel for Operation Protective Edge in Gaza – during which Israel defended itself from over 3,000 rockets from Hamas – and against “settlements” on Jewish areas of Judea and Samaria. Karim added that the Commission collects “data and evidence” with the help of human rights organizations and is preparing the legal arguments to be presented to the ICC after it is declared “the State of Palestine” by the court on April 1, 2015. He said the Palestinian Authority believes that it has strong legal arguments over whether the communities are “war crimes”, and it will use this against ministers, Knesset members and army officers who lived or still live in Judea-Samaria in what it claims is “contrary to international law.”

Qassem Soleiman, commander of the Revolutionary Guards elite Al Qods Brigades, paid a groundbreaking visit last Thursday, March 5, to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan as guest of Gen. Faisal Al-Shoulbaki, director of General Intelligence and a close adviser to King Abdullah II. The visit, encouraged by Obama administration policy, showed one of America’s oldest Sunni Arab allies, recognizing the direction of the trending regional reality to jump the lines over to Tehran. Iran’s grab for Middle East influence is now reaching from four capitals, Baghdad, Damascus, Sanaa, Beirut to a fifth, Amman. Our sources report that Royal Jordanian Air Force fighter jets escorted the Iranian general’s armored motorcade as it drove from Baghdad to Amman through the main highway connecting the two Arab capitals. It is not known whether the king gave Soleimani an audience, but the possibility is not ruled out. His talks with Jordan’s intelligence and military heads ranged widely over the battles in Iraq and Syria against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant-ISIS. This suggests that Jordan has shown willingness to take the first step towards coordinating its policies and military operations with Tehran – not just with Washington as hitherto. Some 12,000 American soldiers are posted to Jordan, most of them members of elite US combat units. Their primary task is to safeguard the throne against threats from Syria and Al Qaeda and its affiliates.

Headline: SYRIAN JIHADISTS SIGNAL INTENT FOR LEBANON
Both the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and the al-Qaeda affiliate Jabhat al-Nusra (JN) plan to conduct attacks in Lebanon in the near term. Widely presumed to be enemies, recent reports of an upcoming joint JN and ISIS offensive in Lebanon, when coupled with ongoing incidents of cooperation between these groups, indicate that the situation between these groups in Lebanon is as fluid and complicated as in Syria. Although they are direct competitors that have engaged in violent confrontation in other areas, JN and ISIS have co-existed in the Syrian-Lebanese border region since 2013, and their underground networks in southern and western Lebanon may overlap in ways that shape their local relationship. JN and ISIS are each likely to pursue future military operations in Lebanon that serve separate but complementary objectives. Since 2013 both groups have occasionally shown a willingness to cooperate in a limited fashion in order to capitalize on their similar objectives in Lebanon. This unusual relationship appears to be unique to Lebanon and the border region, and does not extend to other battlefronts. Despite recent clashes that likely strained this relationship in February 2015, contention between the groups in this area has not escalated beyond localized skirmishes. This suggests that both parties have a mutual interest in preserving their coexistence in this strategically significant area. In January 2015, JN initiated a new campaign of spectacular attacks against Lebanese supporters of the Syrian regime, while ISIS has increased its mobilization in the border region since airstrikes against ISIS in Syria began in September 2014. Conditions favor a continued limited détente between JN and ISIS past March 2015.

Headline: Saudi Arabia Prepares for Iranian Nuclear Deal
Saudi Arabia is quietly preparing for an international nuclear agreement with Iran that it fears will rehabilitate its Shiite Persian rival. King Salman bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud’s approach eschews the public spectacle of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to Congress (indeed, the Saudis don’t want any association with Israel) and instead focuses on regional alliances to contain an emergent Iran. The Saudis publicly welcomed US Secretary of State John Kerry’s assurances in Riyadh last week that Washington will not accept a bad nuclear deal with Iran, and that a deal will not inaugurate a grand rapprochement between Washington and Tehran. They remain deeply skeptical about the negotiations, however, and are preparing for any outcome in the P5+1 process. The Saudis recognize that a successful deal between Iran, the US, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany will enjoy broad international backing and United Nations endorsement. Riyadh has no interest in being isolated in a dissenting minority with Netanyahu against a deal backed by a global majority. The royal family despises Israel, and Netanyahu is regarded as a war criminal by most Saudis. Any hint of mutual interest with Israel is unpalatable in the kingdom. So the Saudi approach is to strengthen its regional alliances for long-term confrontation with Tehran. Most immediately, this means strengthening the unity of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). It has strong allies in Abu Dhabi and Manama. In Riyadh’s eyes, there are two weak links in GCC collusion against Iran: Oman and Qatar. Neither is likely to give up their bilateral lucrative ties to Iran, but Salman is pressing both to adhere to GCC unity and not facilitate Iranian subversion.

A series of bombings killed one person and injured nine in Egypt’s second city of Alexandria on Sunday and an attack by unidentified gunmen in another province wounded two others, security and medical sources said. Sunday’s first blast killed one person and wounded five others outside a supermarket in the Seyouf district of eastern Alexandria, Magdy Hegazy, undersecretary at the health ministry said. A bomb blast outside Harambe police station in central Alexandria wounded four more, while security forces disarmed a third bomb device in the vicinity, security sources said. A fourth bomb went off near the Bab Sharq police station without injuring or killing anyone, Hegazy said. In Qalyubia province, north of Cairo, one policeman and one civilian were wounded in the attack by unidentified gunmen, security sources said.

Syria Headline: Air strike on Islamic State-run refinery in Syria kills 30: monitor
A U.S.-led coalition air strike in Syria hit an oil refinery run by the Islamic State militant group near the border with Turkey on Sunday, killing 30 people, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported. Rami Abdulrahman, who runs the Observatory, said the dead were refinery workers and Islamic State militants. The targeted refinery was just northeast of the town of Tel Abyad near the Turkish border, he said. Asked about the report, a spokesman for the U.S. Combined Joint Task Force overseeing the fight against Islamic State, said: “When an allegation of civilian casualties caused by U.S. or coalition forces is determined to be credible, a thorough investigation would be launched to determine the accuracy of the claim and any circumstances surrounding it.” The spokesman said U.S. and coalition forces had implemented “significant mitigation measures within the targeting process and during the conduct of operations to reduce the potential of civilian casualties and collateral damage.”

Syria Headline: Air strike in Syria hits Nusra Front camp
An air strike in northwestern Syria hit a camp used by the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front on Sunday, killing at least nine of its fighters, a monitoring group said, in the second big attack on the group there in four days. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said four of the dead were foreign fighters. The air strike hit close to Atimah at the Syrian border with Turkey in Idlib province. Last week, the Nusra Front’s top military commander and several other leaders were killed in an air strike in Idlib. The Syrian army said it carried out the attack. The leader of a mainstream rebel group said the latest air strike appeared to have been carried out by the U.S.-led alliance that has been attacking Islamic State in Syria, citing the precision of the strike and the strength of the explosion.

A senior Kurdish military official has said they have information that Islamic State (IS) militants are withdrawing from the strategic town of Hawija in southern Kirkuk, seen as the strongest base of IS in Kirkuk Province. Peshmerga Deputy Minister Anwar Haji Osman told BasNews on Monday that the IS militants have lost confidence and withdrawn from a number of frontlines in the south and east of oil-rich Kirkuk Province. “IS militants can’t defend themselves and are fleeing from a number of frontlines in the area. We have received information that they have withdrawn from Hawija as well and are fleeing toward Mosul,” said Osman. He also said that most of the weapons that IS had in Hawija are now in the hands of Peshmerga forces. “They have also left behind numerous bodies of dead IS militants and a lot of armored vehicles,” added Osman. The Kurdish Commander also revealed that the Peshmerga plan to launch an operation to take Hawija, and IS stronghold.

Iraq Headline: Iraq Praises Iran’s Help in Fight Against ISIS
The top US military official said Monday he is “a bit concerned” about whether the international coalition fighting the Islamic State is sustainable for the longer-term challenge of confronting extremists in other regions. Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters traveling with him that the basis of his concern is the possibility of continued sectarian divisions in Iraq. Dempsey said that in military terms the campaign against IS is “on path.” But he put equal emphasis on the importance of sustaining the coalition for the longer term. Shiite dominance in Baghdad upsets predominantly Sunni countries like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. “It won’t be enough to defeat (the Islamic State) just inside Iraq,” Dempsey said after a series of meetings with top government officials, including Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who assumed power last September, and Defense Minister Khalid al-Obeidi. Sunni Arab nations, in particular, need to be retained as partners against IS, Dempsey said. “And on that basis I came away with some concerns because the coalition has some concerns about” weak Iraqi governance. “I came away a bit concerned that it’s going to be difficult to sustain the coalition for the rest of the challenge, which is trans-regional, unless the government of Iraq can form that national unity platform to which they committed.” Highlighting those concerns at an earlier joint news conference al-Obeidi said his government is comfortable asking for and receiving help from Shiite-led Iran, a major U.S. adversary and an enemy of key U.S. allies in the Gulf, in its fight against Islamic State militants. “We are in a state of war,” al-Obeidi said, which requires Iraq to seek foreign assistance.

Headline: French PM warns that 10,000 Europeans may swell ISIS ranks by end of 2015
The number of Europeans swelling the Islamic State group’s ranks could reach 10,000 by the end of 2015, French Prime Minister Manuel Valls suggested on Sunday in an interview with French television, AFP reported Sunday. “There are 3,000 Europeans in Iraq and Syria today. When you do a projection for the months to come, there could be 5,000 before summer and 10,000 before the end of the year,” Valls warned, addressing the near three-fold increase of foreign born Islamic State militants. “Do you realize the threat this represents?” he asked. “There have already been nearly 90 French people who have died out there with a weapon in their hand, fighting against our own values.” Different organizations have provided various estimates of how many fighters have joined the Islamic State and other groups like it. According to the Tel-Aviv-based Meir Amit Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, approximately between 6,000 and 7,000 fighters have traveled to Syria alone in order to fight the Assad regime. Meanwhile, the US State Department has suggested that as many as 20,000 fighters from one hundred different countries have passed through both Syria and Iraq.

Headline: Islamic State earns $1 billion in drug trafficking
Heroin traffic through Iraq from Afghanistan is earning the Islamic State over $1 billion dollars a year, Russia’s drug control chief said. Viktor Ivanov, head of the Russian Federal Drug Control Service (FSKN), said Friday, “The transit of heroin from Afghanistan though the Islamic State-controlled territory is huge financial sponsorship. According to our estimates, IS makes up to $1 billion on Afghan heroin trafficked through its territory.” In November the agency reported that half of all Europe’s heroin supply is brought through Iraq and through some African countries, in each case employing IS militants in the delivery stream. Transfer of heroin has become a reliable income source for IS, the agency said, adding that drug routes across the Gulf of Aden to African countries have increased the number of drug kingpins and pirate gangs. “The area of poppy plantations is growing,” Ivanov said. “This year, I think, we’ll hear news about record-high poppy harvest [and] therefore the high yield of opium and heroin. So this problem should be raised not only in Moscow, but also in the U.N. in general, because this is a threat not only to our country, but also European security.”

Headline: Putin reveals secrets of Russia’s Crimea takeover plot
The United States has begun to deploy 3,000 troops on a three-month exercise to reassure Russia’s nervous neighbors in the Baltic, military officials said Monday. Operation Atlantic Resolve will see major NATO forces working alongside their allies in Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia — former Soviet republics now members of the Western alliance. Pentagon spokesman Colonel Steven Warren said vehicles, helicopters and heavy equipment had begun arriving in the Latvian capital Riga and that the exercises would last 90 days. Warren said the deployed unit was a “Brigade Combat Team” — around 3,000 frontline soldiers. According to a US military source, speaking on condition of anonymity, the equipment would remain behind in the region after the troops of the Third Infantry Division return to base. Earlier, in Riga, US General John O’Connor told AFP the deployment would “demonstrate resolve to President (Vladimir) Putin and Russia that collectively we can come together.”

Headline: Republican senators warn Iran in open letter
Republican senators want to give Iranian leaders — and the president — a refresher on the constitutional balance of power. In a highly unusual move, a group of 47 Republicans in the upper chamber has written to Iran’s top leaders to let them know that any nuclear deal they reach with the United States would be “nothing more than an executive agreement.” Freshman Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) organized the letter, which features signatures from top Republican Senate leadership and potential presidential candidates such as Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida, Ted Cruz of Texas and Rand Paul of Kentucky. The following Republican senators did not sign the bill: Lamar Alexander of Tennessee, Dan Coats of Indiana, Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Susan Collins of Maine, Bob Corker of Tennessee, Jeff Flake of Arizona and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska. Democrats blasted the letter, with Minority Whip Dick Durbin calling it a “cynical effort” that lays bare partisan rancor for the world to see. “Understand that if these negotiations fail, a military response to Iran developing their nuclear capability becomes more likely,” Durbin (D-Ill.) said in a written statement. “These Republican Senators should think twice about whether their political stunt is worth the threat of another war in the Middle East.” Responding to the missive on Monday, White House press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters that “writing a letter like this that appeals to the hardliners in Iran is frankly just the latest in an ongoing [Republican] strategy – a partisan strategy – to interfere” in foreign policy.

Headline: Libyan general sworn as top commander as his planes hit Tripoli airport
Militants from Libya’s Islamic State affiliate beheaded eight Libyan guards in an attack on a central oil field last week during which the extremists abducted nine foreigners, a Libyan spokesman said Monday. In the Philippines, authorities said Monday that four of their nationals were among the nine abducted from the oil field. An Austrian, a Czech, a Bangladeshi and a Ghana national were also taken while one hostage remains unidentified. Friday’s attack on the al-Ghani oil field near the town of Zalla, some 750 kilometers (470 miles) southeast of the capital, Tripoli, was part of a series of deadly assaults on Libya’s oil lucrative infrastructure by the Islamic State group. The attacks in recent weeks have forced Libya to declare 11 fields non-operational, including al-Ghani, and invoke a force majeure clause that exempts the state from contractual obligations. Libya’s military spokesman, Ahmed al-Mesmari, warned that Islamic State militants’ long-term goal is to take over Libya’s petroleum industry. “This is the lifeline of the Libyan people,” he said Monday, adding the consequences of such a loss would be dire. During the attack on al-Ghani, an employee watched the beheadings of the eight oil guards and subsequently died of a heart attack, al-Mesmari also said. He not elaborate on how the army knew about the beheadings but the force serving as oil guards is closely allied to the Libyan military, which answers to the eastern-based government, one of Libya’s two rival governments. In the Philippines, Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman Charles Jose said Manila was working with the employer of the nine, Austrian-owned VAOS Oil Service, the Libyan government and embassies of the other foreigners abducted. The incident brings the total number of Filipinos missing in Libya to seven. Three others were snatched in another oil field on Feb. 3 and their whereabouts also remain unknown.

Headline: Saudis trying to woo Turkey into joining anti-Iran axis
Turkish sources say that the president dined with Saudi King Salman without bothering to have his food checked. What did grab attention, however, particularly in the Egyptian press, was the reception the Saudis afforded Erdogan in comparison with the welcome committee that greeted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who was in the country at the same time. The Saudi king received the Egyptian leader in person whereas Erdogan, on his arrival at the airport, was greeted by the local governor and some aides. Clearly the Saudis are able to convey diplomatic messages without being vocal about it. Nevertheless, the very fact of Erdogan’s visit is a milestone in the foreign relations of the two countries. Unlike Salman’s predecessor, King Abdullah, who viewed Erdogan as a rival and Turkey as a country whose influence and power in the Arab Middle East needed to be reined in, Salman apparently has other ideas. Several Saudi commentators who wrote about the two state visits welcomed Erdogan’s trip to the country and noted that Egypt will not dictate Saudi foreign policy or whether Saudi Arabia advances ties with Turkey or not. Saudia Arabia under King Salman is hinting, and not so subtly, that it was King Abdullah’s foreign policy that led to the spread of Iranian influence in the region; that Iran, more than Saudi Arabia, is considered an active combatant against the Islamic State, the organization also known as ISIS and ISIL; and that Saudi mishandling of the situation in Yemen brought about the seizure of power in Yemen by the Houthis, who are supported by Iran. Commentators suggest that Saudi Arabia is seeking to establish an anti-Shi’ite and anti-Iranian axis in which Turkey would play a central role. Such an alliance, however, could not exclude Egypt, which is acting in concert with the Saudis and the leaders of the Gulf states to establish a rapid-deployment joint Arab force that would be comprised of 40,000 soldiers.

More than 50 people were killed and scores wounded in a series of suicide bombings in northern Nigeria on Saturday, witnesses and authorities told CNN. The blasts occurred in Maiduguri, the capital of the tumultuous Borno state, at the city’s main market, a fish market and a bus station. Four suicide bombers — three women and a man — carried out the attacks, according to witnesses. No group immediately claimed responsibility for the bloodshed. But the Islamist extremist group Boko Haram has been behind many similar attacks in northern Nigeria and beyond, killing hundreds in recent months as part of its terrorist campaign to bring its twisted version of Sharia law to the region. Clement Adoda, a Borno state police spokesman, said at least 54 people were killed and another 139 wounded in the suicide attacks. Suleiman Bulunkutu said he and others involved in the rescue operation had taken about 50 bodies to the Maiduguri General Hospital morgue. “This toll doesn’t include those taken to three other hospitals,” Bulunkutu said. “Therefore, the final (death) toll may be higher.” In the first blast, a woman dressed in a hijab got off a motorized rickshaw and blew herself up outside the Baga Road fish market around 11:20 a.m. (5:20 a.m. ET), fish trader Mohammed Boni said. Headline: Rocket attack hits Kidal UN base in northern Mali
A rocket attack on a United Nations base in northern Mali has killed three people and wounded at least 12 others. A peacekeeper died when about 30 rockets struck the base in the desert town of Kidal, said the UN mission. Some rockets missed their target, killing two civilians. It is not clear who carried out the attack. Islamist militants are active in the area. Meanwhile an al-Qaeda-linked group said it carried out an attack in the capital which killed five people on Saturday. Al-Murabitoun, an Islamist group led by Algerian militant Mokhtar Belmokhtar, said the attack on a bar in Bamako was a “revenge operation” against the “infidel West”. On Sunday Minusma said the rocket attack on its base in Kidal occurred at about 06:00 GMT. Peacekeepers returned fire. At least one shell fell on a nearby camp for Tuareg and Arab nomads, killing two people and injuring several children, a witness said. Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist militants and Tuareg rebels have been fighting the army in northern Mali for a number of years. France, the former colonial power in Mali, intervened two years ago to stop their advance south of Bamako.

At least two militants and two soldiers died in an al Qaeda assault on an army base in southern Yemen early on Monday, officials and residents said, in another sign of unraveling security. The assault on the base in Mahfad in Abyan province was a setback for the country’s splintered military which, alongside local militiamen, had largely expelled Al Qaeda from the area’s towns in 2013. Local sources told Reuters the battle was ongoing and army reinforcements backed by dozens of the armed “popular committees” had come to the soldiers’ aid. Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the most active arms of the global militant group, has grown more powerful since “Arab Spring” uprisings rocked Yemen in 2011 and led to splits in its military.

A delegation from the pro-Assad Syrian National Defense Army visited Yemen last week through Beirut International Airport, private sources told ARA News. “Such visits are aimed to increase coordination between the Syrian regime and the Houthi group in Yemen and plan to bring the latter’s members to Syria in order to receive military training as well as to exchang security information between the two sides,” a regime-linked source told ARA News on condition of anonymity. Speaking to ARA News, the Syrian journalist Mazen Jerdi said that social media networking sites recently published pictures of Khamenei, the Islamic Republic guide, in the streets of the Yemeni cities, as well as pictures of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad which were raised by Houthi protesters there. “It’s no more secret that strong relations link the Houthis with both Iran and the Assad regime, and such mutual relations will definitely include military exercises under the direct supervision of Iranian authorities,” Jerdi argued, pointing out that the Houthis will thus lead Yemen and will threaten the southern region of Saudi Arabia as part of the strategic policy of Iran.

But QE has been a long time coming on mainland Europe and is regarded as the ultimate weapon in the ECB’s vast anti-deflation armoury, the culmination of a long series of unprecedented measures to bring the eurozone’s flat-lining economic recovery back to life. The main European indices closed mostly down on Monday — with investors risk averse in the face of more immediate concerns about Greece — and the euro fell to its lowest level against the dollar in more than 11 years, while bond yields also fell. Venezuela will begin installing some 20,000 fingerprint scanners at supermarkets nationwide in a bid to stamp out hoarding and panic buying, which the government blames for long lines and widespread shortages of basic goods. The oil-rich nation has been selectively rolling out the rationing system for months at state-run supermarkets along the western border with Colombia, where smuggling of price-controlled goods is a major problem. On Saturday, President Nicolas Maduro said that seven large private retail chains had voluntarily agreed to install the scanners. “I ask for the the comprehension of all of Venezuela, to understand this problem, because there is a lot of manipulation taking place,” Maduro said at the inauguration of a state-run supermarket. Economists say the effort is bound to fail. They blame decade-old price controls for destroying local manufacturing and attracting smugglers who can resell the goods on the black market and in Colombia for huge gains. In recent days, those profits have become juicier as a result of Venezuela’s tanking currency. The bolivar has slid 35 percent in the past two weeks on the black market and now trades at nearly one-fortieth the official rate used to import food, according to DolarToday, a website that tracks the illegal rate based on currency trades along the border.

Headline: NY’s homeless population hits record high as poverty explodes in America
The homeless population in the nation’s largest city has exploded to an all-time high, forcing officials to provide shelter to desperate families in dilapidated tenements that have been identified by housing authorities as dangerous. New York City’s Mayor Bill de Blasio arrived at City Hall following his election on promises to turn the desperation around, but in reality, reports the Daily News, he has had difficulty addressing an age-old problem that has only gotten worse during the Obama years. The paper, on its website, reported that, by mid-December, NYC’s homeless population had swollen to a record 59,068, or larger than the populations of scores of mid-sized cities around the country. One organization, the Coalition for the Homeless, told the paper that its homeless count was higher, at 60,352. As the Daily News further reported: The homeless count, according to the city and the coalition, includes 25,000 children. And it represents a 10% jump from the 53,615 in shelters on de Blasio’s Inauguration Day. To reduce these distressing numbers, the city has tried to move families into scarce permanent housing, but has been forced to continue using much-criticized apartments known as “cluster sites.”

Jean-Claude Juncker said such a move would help the EU to persuade Russia that it was serious about defending its values in the face of the threat posed by Moscow. However, his proposal was immediately rejected by the British government, which said that there was “no prospect” of the UK agreeing to the creation of an EU army. “You would not create a European army to use it immediately,” Juncker told the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in Germany in an interview published on Sunday. “But a common army among the Europeans would convey to Russia that we are serious about defending the values of the European Union.” Juncker, who has been a longstanding advocate of an EU army, said getting member states to combine militarily would make spending more efficient and would encourage further European integration.

The United States on Monday declared Venezuela a national security threat and ordered sanctions against seven officials in the worst diplomatic dispute with the oil-rich country since socialist President Nicolas Maduro took office in 2013. President Barack Obama issued and signed the executive order, which senior administration officials said did not target the energy sector or Venezuela’s broader economy. The move raises tensions between Washington and the OPEC member just as U.S. relations with Cuba, another longtime U.S. foe in Latin America, are set to be normalized. Declaring a country a national security threat is the first step in starting a sanctions regime. The same process has been followed with countries such as Iran and Syria, U.S. officials said. The White House said the executive order targeted people whose actions undermined democratic processes or institutions, had committed acts of violence or abuse of human rights, were involved in prohibiting or penalizing freedom of expression, or were government officials involved in public corruption. “Venezuelan officials past and present who violate the human rights of Venezuelan citizens and engage in acts of public corruption will not be welcome here, and we now have the tools to block their assets and their use of U.S. financial systems,” White House spokesman Josh Earnest said in a statement. “We are deeply concerned by the Venezuelan government’s efforts to escalate intimidation of its political opponents. Venezuela’s problems cannot be solved by criminalizing dissent,” he added.

According to a statement released by the Pakistani Army’s Directorate of Inter-Services Public Relations, the Monday test launch of solid-fueled surface-to-surface Shaheen-III (Falcon-III) missile, with its impact point in the Arabian Sea, was “aimed at validating various design and technical parameters of the weapon system at maximum range.” Director General for Pakistan’s Strategic Plan Division Lieutenant General Zubair Mahmood Hayat hailed the missile launch as a major step toward upgrading the country’s deterrence capability. The test-fire comes less than a week after the first high-level talks between Islamabad and its arch-rival, New Delhi, in nearly a year. On January 31, India test-fired its longest-range nuclear-capable ballistic missile with the capacity to strike China and Europe.

Headline: Islamic State attacks Christian villages in northeast Syria
Islamic State militants strategically targeted Assyrian Christian villages in northeastern Syria in a series of brutal attacks on Saturday, causing clashes with Kurdish militia in the area. Most of the fighting occurred on the northern banks of the river as ISIS attempted to capture Tal Talmr, a crossroad 35 km from the city of Hassakeh. By capturing the crossroad, ISIS would have a direct corridor to the eastern border of Iraq. The ISIS offensive in the town of Tal Tamr has advanced to numerous surrounding areas. Since they began the offensive in the region, they have gained control of over 10 villages near Tal Tamr. The city is 40 km south of the Turkish border and currently lies under Kurdish control. The attacks come just weeks after the Islamic State kidnapped 220 Assyrian Christians from nearby towns. In the time since the kidnappings, ISIS has released 23 Assyrian Christians.

I have put together a massive list of the mass deaths of the birds, fish, and animals and at the same time we are still reading new reports concerning the bees dying off. As you will see from the report below people are working to find ways to get the bees into the crop fields. After reading the book of Revelation and reading what Jesus warned us about famines in the last day one can see the hand writing on the wall. Expect to see more food prices going up as more of our food supply fades away. I am grateful to the Lord that He has sent you to my site and hopefully you have ready my warnings to watch the food prices to rise again in 2015. Magnitude 4.6 quake rocks eastern Taiwan
The earthquake struck in Guangfu township 35.9 kilometers southwest of the Hualien County government office complex at a depth of 13.7 km, the bureau’s Seismology Center said.
5.4-quake hits Batangas, Manila
Its epicenter was tracked 17 kilometers (kms) southwest of Calatagan, Batangas. The earthquake that occurred at past 5 p.m. emanated from the Manila Trench, an active ocean trench west of the country.
5.1 magnitude quake strikes off Humboldt County coast on New Year’s Day
A 5.1 magnitude earthquake struck nearly 90 miles off the Humboldt County coast during the early morning hours Thursday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The quake was recorded at around 4:16 a.m. Its epicenter was about 80 miles west of Ferndale, according to the USGS website, with responses there showing that the temblor was felt by residents from Arcata to Bodega Bay in Sonoma County.

Since writing that Dec. 7th post Jesus has once again blessed my ministry by touching a number of people to give to Ascent Ministries so Pastor Agneta and Pastor Fiaz can keep on spreading the word of God. For those of you who have been coming to my site I have shown you how the Psalm 83 war is approaching it’s fulfillment. The IDF said it detected rocket experiments in the Gaza Strip on Monday. During the experiments, Hamas fired rockets from Gaza towards the Mediterranean Sea.
Hamas fires rockets into the sea every few days, as part of its weapons program. The launches are used by Hamas arms designers to experiment with various projectile models.
The experiments naturally have attracted the attention of the Israel Navy. “They are doing experiments and checking their rockets. This is a part of their domestic weapons production. We did not doubt, at the end of the war, that their focus would be on building more weapons. We monitor every such launch, noting the quality of the rocket and its range,” a senior navy source told The Jerusalem Post after the summer conflict with Hamas.

Headline: Hamas said using cement, steel from UN aid to repair attack tunnels
Israel has determined that Hamas was using shipments of cement and other building material to restore its attack tunnel network in the Gaza Strip. Officials said the military has assessed that Hamas was diverting building material meant for civilian reconstruction to repair attack tunnels damaged by the Israeli military during the 50-day war in July and August 2014. They said Hamas was seizing more than 20 percent of cement and steel approved by Israel under a United Nations-led campaign to repair or rebuild 60,000 Gazan homes. “They [Hamas] are operating with impunity and destroying the spirit of the humanitarian effort,” an official said. “The international community knows this but is choosing to look away.” Under pressure from the United States, Israel allowed the renewal of cement and steel shipments to the Gaza Strip in October 2014. But the officials said that despite pledges by the international community that the Palestinian Authority would take charge, Hamas quickly gained control over the flow of building material. Hamas was also imposing taxes on cement despite PA opposition. “There is virtually no presence of the PA in Gaza, which means that Hamas is calling all the shots,” the official said.

Headline: Palestinians mull delaying UN Security Council vote
The Palestinian Authority is continuing its efforts to assemble a majority in the UN Security Council for the resolution they submitted last week on setting a three-year timeframe for an Israeli withdrawal from the occupied territories. Dr. Majdi Khaldi, the advisor for international relations to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, said the PA would renew its contacts with the UNSC member nations on Monday in an attempt to guarantee a majority in support of the resolution. In UN diplomatic terms, the Palestinian proposal was “put in blue” last week, which means it is a draft resolution that is approaching its final stage of formulation, whose sponsors seek to put it before a vote soon. Such a draft resolution is printed in blue ink and officially distributed to Security Council members, usually within 24 hours before the vote. Besides calling for an Israeli withdrawal by 2017, the resolution allows the possibility of negotiations for a year and states the Palestinian state will be established based on the principles of previous Security Council resolutions, and on the basis of the 1967 lines. A senior Palestinian official told Haaretz on Monday morning that the efforts are now focused on holding the vote before the month’s end – but that if a majority is not assured, then for it to be held early next year, after the changes in the membership of the Security Council for 2015 take effect. These changes, which could well strengthen the Palestinian position, and may guarantee a majority for them, include the entry of Indonesia in place of Australia, Angola in place of Rwanda, and Spain instead of Luxembourg.

Islamic State of Iraq and Levant has been approaching Jordan. Officials said the Hashemite kingdom was on alert for an ISIL presence along Jordan’s borders with Iraq and Syria. They said ISIL was trying to use Jordan as a waystation for fighters and weapons for the jihad campaign in Iraq and Syria. “The Jordanian armed forces are ready to repel any infiltration or attempts to harm security and stability,” Jordanian military spokesman Col. Mamdouh Al Ameri said. In a statement on Dec. 17, Al Ameri acknowledged an ISIL attempt to storm the Iraqi border with Jordan. He said three ISIL vehicles opened fire and detonated explosives against Iraqi border forces before withdrawing. Officials also reported clashes with Jordanian security forces along the Syrian border. They said the attackers could have been ISIL fighters or smugglers. They have been trying to smuggle weapons, ammunition and drugs into the kingdom,” an official said. Jordan, deemed a leading base for Syrian rebels, has been working with the United States to bolster border security and surveillance. Syria Headline: Syria says Israeli drone downed in Quneitra
Syria said on Sunday that an Israeli drone had been brought down in the province of Quneitra near the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. State media said the drone was flying above the village of Hadar when it was downed. It was not immediately clear whether it had been shot down or had crashed. Quneitra has seen heavy fighting between forces loyal to President Bashar al-Assad and rebels including al-Qaeda-linked fighters. Israel has struck Syria several times since the start of the latter’s nearly four-year civil war, mostly destroying weaponry such as missiles that Israeli officials said were destined for their long-time foe Hezbollah in neighboring Lebanon. Syria Headline: 20 jihadists killed in failed east Syria airport attack
At least 20 Islamist State (IS) group members were killed in the second failed jihadist bid in a month to take over an air base in eastern Syria, a monitoring group said Sunday. “The IS tried, starting late Saturday, to storm the air base. A total of 20 jihadists were killed in the attack, as well as two regime soldiers,” said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Nineteen of the IS members were Syrian, while one was Moroccan. They were killed in fighting and heavy army shelling. “The withdrawing jihadists seized and took with them several anti-aircraft missiles,” said Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman. The attack was the second recent attempt by IS to take over the Deir Ezzor military air base, one of the last remaining regime positions in the eastern province.

Syria Headline: Four children dead in Syria school bus strike
At least four Syrian school children were killed and 10 wounded on Monday when a regime air strike hit their bus in the northwest of the country, a monitor said. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said most of those wounded and killed when the Syrian air force hit a school bus near the village of Jubass in Idlib province were under the age of 10. “The toll could go rise as there are serious injuries,” said the monitor, which has a wide network of sources on the ground across Syria. Idlib is largely in the hands of Syria’s Al-Qaeda franchise, Al-Nusra Front, which in recent weeks has fended off advances by rival rebel groups and now holds two strategic military bases in the province.

Syria Headline: New decision by Syrian Defense Ministry raises concerns among civilians
The General Directorate of military recruitment in Syria issued a decision on Saturday, banning men who haven’t served in the regime’s army from leaving the country. All branches of immigration and passports across the country began the implementation of the newly issued decision. According to Syrian officials, the Ministry of Defense has requested the issuance of such a decision in order to prevent Syrian men –including those who haven’t performed their compulsory military service, as well as those wanted for service in the military reserves– from leaving the country. “We’re only allowed to travel abroad with official approval from the Recruitment Division,” a young Syrian man based in Damascus told ARA News. In the meantime, the Directorate of Education in Aleppo issued a decision saying that the Syrian state’s employees must prove status of their compulsory service; “otherwise their salaries will be suspended”. This is to be implemented from January 2015 on.

Iraq Headline: ISIS sneaks behind US-backed Kurdish victories in Iraq to retake Baiji refinery city
American, Kurdish and Iraqi officials have hailed as a “major victory” the release of thousands of distressed members of the Yazdi community, trapped for four months on on Mt. Sinjar in northern Iraq, since Islamic State thugs overran their town. Many more fled to Syria while Yazdi women were kidnapped. This was a necessary rescue operation, but hardly a major victory, say debkafile’s military experts. ISIS continues to maintain its grip on vast stretches of Iraq and Syria, defying the efforts of sparse US and coalition air strikes to dislodge them – beyond minor tactical withdrawals. The town of Sinjar is not mentioned in the US and Kurdish releases, because large sections are still in jihadi hands. Even less is heard about the situation on the northern Iraqi-Syrian border, where Abu Bakr Al-Baghdadi has achieved almost total supremacy. But the most telling omission by the US-led allies is the fact that, while they focused on Mt. Sinjar, ISIS forces restored their siege of Baiji, Iraq’s main oil refinery center, after pushing Iraqi troops out. This happened after a majority of the local Sunni tribes who fought alongside the Iraqi army up until November, switched sides. The tribal chiefs complained that the Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who was installed in Baghdad with Washington’s support last year, as a figure able to unite the country’s Sunni and Shiite communities for the war on ISIS, reneged on his promise of pay checks and weapons for the tribesmen who threw in their lot with the national army. Instead, he is accused of aggravating disunity in the armed forces by firing Sunni officers and replacing them with officers loyal to Iraq’s pro-Iranian Shiite militias, who take their orders from Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps commanders.

Kurdish Headline: Sinjar battle: Kurds ‘take control’ of large area from IS
Kurdish authorities say their Peshmerga forces have taken control of a “large area” of the Iraqi town of Sinjar from Islamic State militants. Iraqi Kurdish leader Massoud Barzani claimed large Peshmerga advances during a visit to nearby Mount Sinjar. The town, near the Syrian border has been controlled by Islamic State (IS) militants since August. Kurdish Peshmerga fighters backed by US-led air strikes launched a counter-offensive in the area last week. “Thanks to God we have opened and controlled all the roads and broken the siege imposed on Sinjar Mountain” he said. “The liberation of the centre of Sinjar town was not part of our plans, but we have managed to take control of a large area of it,” he added. Kurdish authorities first announced on Friday that they had broken the IS siege of Mount Sinjar, where thousands of Yazidis and other displaced Iraqis have been trapped since August. Supply convoys are now able to get through to the civilians still on the mountain.

Headline: Official: Russia plotting to start war on Israel
Russia is preparing a contingency plan to prompt Hezbollah and possibly the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad into a direct military conflict with Israel, according to a French official who has been apprised of the situation. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the contingency was meant to be used as a card against the West, particularly the U.S. and European Union, which has been engaged in efforts to isolate Moscow. This past week, the U.S. and E.U. adapted tighter sanctions on the Russian economy, including restrictions on investments in the Crimea, with emphasis on Russian Black Sea oil and gas exploration and tourism. The official said there is information Russia in recent weeks successfully shipped to Hezbollah a large convoy of Iskandar ballistic missiles and surface-to-air missiles. The missiles were received, despite Israel’s alleged airstrikes in Syria targeting Russian-shipped weapons earlier this month, the official said. The official said Russia has not made any decision about agitating a Hezbollah attack on Israel, but views a possible conflict in the Mideast as a card it can play in its confrontation with the West, particularly in Ukraine.

In an explosive TV interview aired last week, Iraq’s Grand Mufti Rafi Al-Rifa’i, the highest Sunni authority in the country, accused the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), the Iraqi government, and Iraqi Shiite militias of mass genocidal killings and rape of Sunni men and women from Iraqi towns and villages “liberated” from ISIS (Islamic State). Mufti Al-Rifa’i posed the unanswerable question, “Why should we fight ISIS? So the Iranian IRGC can take over? The same Iranian IRGC that is running operations in Iraq?” Mufti Al-Rifa’i is the religious leader of roughly eight million Sunni Muslims who live in the western parts of Iraq. Overall, about 22 million Sunni Muslims live in eastern Syria and Western Iraq. They are the current target of ISIS – and also, it turns out, of the Iranian IRGC. In a tragic retelling, the Sunni Mufti Al-Rifa’i described that when the Iraqi Sunni town Jurf al-Sakhar was “liberated,” the men are immediately separated from the women and children after which “nobody knows what happened to the men,” intimating that they were immediately mass-murdered. To top things off, the women and children were not allowed to return to their homes and left “without a roof over their heads.” He added, “Orchards were bulldozed, and houses and (Sunni) mosques were burned down.” Ominously, the cleric added that “This has happened in each and every (Sunni) city” that has been “liberated” by the Iraqi government. He bitterly related that the Iraqi government renamed the Sunni city of Jurf al-Sakhar “Jurf Al-Nasr” (“Nasr” means “victory”) after retaking it, but from his description, the battle was more like a Shi’ite genocidal massacre of Sunni civilian men, women, and children. Al-Rifa’i went to the heart of the matter – the American policy of targeting only the Sunni ISIS – when he asked: “Am I supposed to fight against ISIS, so (Shi’ite) militias can come in an rape our (Sunni) women?”

Chinese state media have reported that China will send 700 troops to South Sudan as part of the country’s first infantry battalion to participate in a United Nations peacekeeping mission. The official Xinhua News Agency said 180 of the troops will fly to South Sudan next month followed by the rest of the battalion in March. The agency said the battalion will be equipped with drones, armored infantry carriers, anti-tank missiles, mortars and other weapons for self-defense purposes. Xinhua said more than 2,000 Chinese peacekeepers are posted in conflict zones around the world. South Sudan has been engulfed in civil war over the past year after its secession from Sudan in 2011.

Headline: Libya fighting spreads to third oil port, 11 killed in Benghazi
At least five people were killed and 35 wounded in clashes between Libyan pro-government forces and radical fighters in Benghazi, medics and military officials said.
Army special forces and troops led by former general Khalifa Haftar have been fighting to oust Islamist groups in the eastern coastal city since October and have managed to retake the airport area and army camps that were seized in August. Fadhal Al-Hassi, a senior officer in Haftar’s forces, said that pro-government forces moved into the Lithi district, where radical groups including Ansar Al-Sharia are still mostly in control, according to military officials. Medics at one Benghazi hospital told a Reuters reporter that at least five bodies had been brought in since the morning and that more casualties were expected as fighting still raging. About 500 people have been killed since October, medics say. At least 11 people were killed and 63 wounded in clashes on Monday.

The slayings of Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu on Saturday afternoon in Brooklyn heightened fears about the safety of law enforcement officials nationwide, though there is no evidence any threats are imminent. The gunman, 28-year-old Ismaaiyl Brinsley, had vowed in an Instagram post to put “wings on pigs” as retaliation for the slayings of black men at the hands of white police. Brinsley was black; the slain New York Police Department officers were Hispanic and Asian. Investigators are trying to determine if Brinsley had taken part in any protests over the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner, whose names he invoked in his online threat, or simply latched onto the cause for the final act in a violent rampage. Flu season is picking up steam just in time to ruin a lot of people’s holidays. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports widespread flu activity in 29 states, primarily in the South and Midwest. That’s twice as many states as the previous week. Most of the patients who have been hospitalized with severe cases of the flu are either very young or the very old. In recent days flu outbreaks have forced schools in Ohio, Tennessee, Georgia and North Carolina to close. So far this season, the virus has killed 11 children.

One of Sierra Leone’s few remaining top health specialists has died after contracting the Ebola virus. Reports indicate that the experimental Ebola drug ZMab had been en route from Belgium to treat the man, known as Dr. Victor Willoughby, but it was already too late, as he had succumbed to the later stages of the deadly illness. According to Reuters, Dr. Willoughby contracted Ebola after treating a man with organ-related problems. The patient, a senior banker in town, was later diagnosed with the hemorrhagic disease after Dr. Willoughby had already been in contact with him, which resulted in the rapid development of Ebola symptoms not long after. Dr. Willoughby reportedly tested positive for Ebola on a Saturday and died five days later on Thursday. He was one of Sierra Leone’s most senior physicians, according to Al Jazeera, and many other physicians in the country looked up to him for wisdom and advice.

A series of five strong earthquakes rattled coastal B.C. this weekend, starting just a few hours before five more — including a magnitude 6.6 quake — hit Indonesia. The B.C. quakes measured from 4.0 to 5.1 in magnitude and were centred offshore between Haida Gwaii and Vancouver Island, about 200 kilometres southwest of Bella Bella, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. In all, 15 earthquakes measuring above 4.0 were detected from about 3 p.m. Saturday to 5 p.m. Sunday at spots around the perimeter of the Pacific Plate, which runs along the western edge of North America from the Baja California peninsula to the Aleutian Islands in the north, and south from Russia to New Zealand, via coastal Japan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. Though some earthquakes are known to trigger others, it is unlikely that happened this weekend, say experts in the field. “The earth is hugely seismically active,” said Brett Gilley, an instructor with the University of B.C.’s Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences Department. He said it is not uncommon for earthquakes to cluster locally as happened in B.C., then Indonesia. “Earthquakes often happen in swarms,” said Gilley, noting that those off the B.C. coast were of similar size. “What’s happening is the stress is sort of adjusting over the whole area.”

Headline: Sweden officially recognizes Palestinian state, Israel recalls ambassador
Sweden has recognized the occupied state of Palestine officially, according to its foreign ministry. The Scandinavian has become the first West-European EU state to recognize the territories. Israel has recalled its ambassador in Sweden. Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas has already welcomed the “historic” move by Sweden. “President Abbas welcomes Sweden’s decision,” Nabil Abu Rudeina, the leader’s spokesman told AFP. The reaction from Israel followed soon after: “The decision of the Swedish government to recognize a Palestinian state is a deplorable decision which only strengthens extremist elements and Palestinian rejectionizm,” the Jewish state’s Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said. Later in the day, Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the country is recalling its ambassador in Sweden for consultations in protest of the move. Lieberman even considers permanently removing the ambassador, Isaac Bachman, from his position, reported Haaretz. This move would officially downgrade Israel’s relations with Sweden.

Headline: IDF Comes Under Fire Along Syrian Border
IDF forces conducting a routine patrol along the Syrian border on the Golan Heights came under fire from Syria on Thursday afternoon. The force reported that it had been targeted by gunfire, and proceeded to conduct a search for the sources of the attack. No wounds or damage was reported as having been caused by the attack. Syrian rebels, including Al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front forces, reportedly took control of the Syrian Golan Heights in early September through fierce fighting with Syrian President Bashar Assad’s forces, and in the process seized the weapons and equipment of UN forces in the area. The region has remained tense, with the fighting often spilling over – accidentally or intentionally – in the form of shells frequently streaking into Israeli territory. The gunfire from Syria comes after a different border was recently hit by an attack; just last Wednesday drug smugglers on the Sinai border opened fire with anti-tank missiles on IDF patrols in the Negev, wounding two female soldiers.

Headline: Jerusalem Church Under Siege From Local Arabs
An eastern Jerusalem church has come under siege from local Arab residents as a property dispute has devolved into repeated bouts of harassment, theft, and physical violence against church employees and property. “When we said we would not sell [the church], they decided to take it by force,” Pastor Karen Dunham of the Living Bread International Church told The Jerusalem Post. Located near the Damascus Gate of Jerusalem’s Old City, Living Bread is a non-denominational church with offices in Israel, Gaza, and Jericho that seeks to reach out with “humanitarian aid to the poor and the refugees with aid and education,” its website says. According to Dunham, the church has been attacked by men with knifes, clubs, pepper spray, and gas by local Arab men. The men have destroyed the church’s security cameras and a metal security fence, in addition to threatening to “cut the heads off” two orphans with disabilities. Dunham has appealed to local police for protection and the arrest of suspects behind the threats and attacks. “The last couple of weeks is when most of the violence has happened, and now they are not allowing our staff to walk in the street to get to and from work,” she said.

Jerusalem District Police Commander Moshe Edri together with Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovitch assessed intelligence reports on the ground, according to a police spokesman, and issued a directive barring Muslims and Jews from accessing the holy site. Right-wing activists, including some members of Knesset, had called to march on the Temple Mount en masse Thursday morning in response to the suspected attempted assassination which left Glick in serious, but stable, condition. Glick was shot three times outside the Jerusalem’s Begin Center following a conference about the Jewish presence on the Temple Mount. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has issued a public response to the attempt on Temple Mount activist Yehuda Glick’s life Thursday, calling out the international community and the Palestinian Authority (PA) in the process for “hypocrisy” regarding incitement. “A few days ago, I said that we were facing a wave of incitement by radical Islamic elements and by Palestinian Authority Chairman Abu Mazen [Mahmoud Abbas – ed.] who said that Jews must be prevented from going up to the Temple Mount by any means possible,” he continued. “I still have not heard from the international community so much as one word of condemnation for these inflammatory remarks. The international community needs to stop its hypocrisy and take action against inciters, against those who try to change the status quo.” Abbas stated, minutes before Netanyahu spoke, that closing the Temple Mount Thursday following the attack was a “declaration of war.”

Israel has since announced it would reopen the site for Friday prayers. Headline: Lebanese army detains 50 in north after weekend clashes
Lebanese troops detained 50 people in raids on towns and Syrian refugee camps in the north of the country, the army said on Thursday, part of a security crackdown after battles with Islamist gunmen over the weekend. The army has mounted several raids since Islamist militants clashed with soldiers in and around the northern city of Tripoli from Friday to Sunday, some of the worst fighting to spill over to Lebanon from the Syrian civil war. Soldiers moved on the towns of al-Minya, Mashta Hassan, Mashta Hammoud and refugee camps in the town of Behneen on Wednesday. The 50 detainees were mainly Syrian but included nine Lebanese and one Palestinian, an army statement said. In one of the raids, soldiers seized a number of weapons including rocket-propelled grenade launchers as well as communications equipment, the statement said.

The plan to clear 10,000 residents from some 800 houses over just several days has angered the area’s already disgruntled population, which has long held grievances with Cairo. “To throw 10,000 people into the street in a second, this is the biggest threat to national security,” said Ayman Mohsen, whose sister left her house located 350 meters from the border. Speaking to The Associated Press via online messages, he said the army told residents to leave on Tuesday within 48 hours, and that houses would be blown up even if people remain inside. The move to set up the planned 13-kilometer (8-mile) buffer zone, which will be 500 meters (yards) wide, comes after militants attacked an army checkpoint near Sheikh Zuweyid town last week, killing 31 soldiers. According to the so-called Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, ten Peshmerga fighters entered the besieged town on Thursday through the border crossing with Turkey to help the Kurds there fight against the ISIL. “Minutes ago, about 10 members of the Kurdish Peshmerga forces entered the town of Ayn al-Arab (the Arabic name for Kobani), through the border crossing between the town and Turkish territory,” the UK-based group said. This was the first from among a group of 150 Kurdish fighters who are to be deployed to the embattled city. Takfiri Boko Haram militants have reportedly captured the second largest city in Nigeria’s northeast Adamawa State, amid fierce clashes between Nigerian troops and the militants. Mubi, which is one of the commercial hubs of the state, fell into the hands of the Boko Haram group on Wednesday, when several people were killed and many others forced to flee their homes. Residents, who fled to neighboring areas, said that militants first overran the northeastern town of Uba in Borno state before moving to try to seize Mubi, using firepower including rocket-propelled grenades. “They (the militants) killed several people, especially around the market, where traders had gone for commercial activities,” said the Kukawa local government chairman Modu Musa. “There is virtually not a single resident left in Mubi. Saudi Arabia said late on Wednesday it had detected six new cases of the deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 24 hours, the biggest daily jump for months with officials blaming lax hospital procedures. The recent surge in cases, now numbering 32 since the start of October, has been focused in Riyadh and the western city of Taif, but it remains far less extensive than an outbreak in April and May that infected hundreds. MERS causes coughing, fever and sometimes pneumonia, killing around 40 percent of its victims. The vast majority of confirmed cases worldwide have been found in Saudi Arabia, where 786 people have been infected, of whom 334 have died. Two of the new cases announced by the health ministry were in medical personnel, adding to concerns about the standard of infection control procedures in medical facilities. Three different Taif hospitals have been affected. Some of the people infected with MERS in Taif this month were being treated in one renal clinic in a hospital in the city, which authorities regard as being responsible for some of the transmissions, a senior Health Ministry official said.

The droughts have already purportedly cost the state’s economy a whopping $2.2 billion and has left more than 500,000 acres of fields fallow in its wake. Being that California is the source for more than 50 percent of US fruit, vegetables and nuts, and almost 90 percent of America’s strawberries, olives, broccoli, nectarines and garlic, it’s vital that the state finds ways to cope with the rainless situation they are faced with. As part of the Israeli efforts to come to its closest allies’ aid, Prof. Eilon Adar, a world expert in groundwater flow systems, will work to help the state work out solutions to the issue. During a recent visit to San Fransisco and the Silicon Valley, Professor Adar toured numerous salination plants in northern California, and participated in a state-wide conference in which a wide range of technological solutions were presented. Adar said, “If we managed to overcome the water issues in the Middle East, we can do it anywhere in the world. Nonetheless, (to address the issue) they will need to improve the management and efficiency of the water market and increase and optimize the coordination between the water companies.” At the same time, the Israeli consul to California, Andy David, said to reporters, “We are pushing ahead with the water issue and branding Israel as part of the solution, an ally with the knowhow whom can come to help in a time of need.”

Seismic monitoring sensors sent to western Alaska
NOME, Alaska — Scientists comprising a “rapid response” team have been sent to two communities in western Alaska to get earthquake monitoring equipment in the ground.
KNOM reports (http://is.gd/zSGlsI) this is in response to two recent earthquakes on the western side of the Brooks Range, an area that doesn’t usually experience seismic activity.
A series of small earthquakes and aftershocks were recorded Saturday several dozen miles northeast of the 500-strong community of Noatak. The strongest was magnitude 5.5. This came on top of a 5.6 earthquake in the same area last month.
The monitoring equipment is being installed in Noatak and Kotzebue. In true sci-fi fashion, a team of researchers from The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) in La Jolla, Calif., has created a brand-new bacteria based on a genetic structure found nowhere on Earth. According to lead researcher Floyd Romesberg, the feat involved artificially engineering a unique combination of DNA material — a combination not found in any living creature — and then successfully inserting it into a living cell that usually contains only natural combinations of DNA. “Life on Earth in all its diversity is encoded by only two pairs of DNA bases, A-T and C-G,” Romesberg explained in an institute news release. “And what we’ve made is an organism that stably contains those two plus a third, unnatural pair of bases.” “This shows that other solutions to storing [genetic] information are possible,” he added, “and, of course, takes us closer to an expanded-DNA biology that will have many exciting applications — from new medicines to new kinds of nanotechnology.” Romesberg and his colleagues discuss their handiwork — funded in part by the U.S. National Institutes of Health — in the May 7 online edition of Nature.

On April 10, at 5 p.m., hundreds of Jews will gather at the Maimonides rabbinical institution plaza in the Kiryat Moshe neighborhood in Jerusalem and start learning the Jewish laws of Passover. Rabbis and experts, including Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, the head of the Temple Institute in the Old City of Jerusalem, the leading body preparing for the establishment of the third temple, will teach the audience the laws of the Passover sacrifice. Alongside Ariel, the ritual slaughterer (shohet) Rabbi Yehudah Giatt will teach the audience about the unique elements of the slaughter of the Passover sacrifice. After the lessons, the real thing will start: the simulation of the Passover sacrifice. This isn’t the first time that the “Association of Temple Organizations” will hold this activity, but this year the practice drill and re-enactment of the Passover sacrifice will be carried out by the students of the school for priests, Nezer Ha-kodesh, which started operating this year. The priest school intends to train the hundreds of priests that would be needed to work at the third temple; many Jews endeavor for its establishment in Israel today.

A powerful category three cyclone is tracking towards Australia’s north Queensland coast. Tropical Cyclone Ita is intensifying as it approaches the coast north of Port Douglas and is the most powerful storm the region has seen since Cyclone Yasi hit in 2011. At least two students have been killed and several others injured in fresh clashes between Egypt’s security forces and student protesters at Cairo University. The killings occurred when security forces fired tear gas and rubber pellets to disperse the crowds denouncing the recent mass death sentences handed to Muslim Brotherhood members. More than a dozen people were wounded in following clashes between supporting and opposing students. The rallies were called at Cairo and Zagazig universities by Brotherhood members. Reports say groups of pro-Morsi students also protested at Zagazig University. The development came after mass sentences were given to over 500 supporters of ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, over the murder of a police officer, among other charges, last August.

Egypt’s military chief, Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, will soon announce his resignation to run for the upcoming presidential vote. On Wednesday, el-Sisi met with the country’s military council to inform it of his plan to resign as defense minister in order to officially announce his presidential bid. Local media reports say Sisi will announce his decision in a broadcast statement. Sisi was appointed as the general commander of the armed forces and defense minister by the country’s ousted president, Mohamed Morsi, back in 2012. Months later though he played a key role in masterminding Morsi’s downfall following a wave of protests. The latest developments come after the council of military leaders recently released a statement giving its blessing to Sisi’s presidential bid, calling it an “obligation” based on popular demand.

Syrian rebels and government forces clashed over another coastal town in Latakia province on Wednesday, as opposition fighters slowly pressed their advance in the heartland of President Bashar Assad’s minority Alawite sect after seizing a border crossing and their first coastal strip since the uprising began three years ago. The fighting in the town of Qastal Maaf is part of an assault that began on Saturday in Latakia province by an array of rebels from conservative and Islamic groups, including the al-Qaida affiliated Nusra Front. Late Tuesday, the rebels moved onto Qastal Maaf after seizing a hilltop area known as Observatory 45. Activists said the Observatory 45 was important because it overlooked the mountains of the Latakia where there are dozens of opposition-held villages.

Ten people were killed and 20 others wounded in separate violent attacks across Iraq on Wednesday, police and medical sources said. In Anbar province, four civilians were killed and seven others wounded by artillery bombardment on several neighborhoods in the city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of the Iraqi capital Baghdad. Also in Fallujah, gunmen planted bombs in five houses of local officials and security officers and blew them up. But the blasts caused no human casualties as the families of the officials and officers had left their houses. Anbar province has been the scene of fierce clashes that flared up after Iraqi police dismantled an anti-government protest site outside Ramadi in late December last year. Elsewhere, two policemen were killed when gunmen attacked their checkpoint at a marketplace in the city of Shirqat, some 280 km north of Baghdad. In a separate incident, a car bomb near the house of a police officer in the city of Baiji, some 200 km north of Baghdad, was detonated in the morning, wounding five civilians and damaging several nearby houses.

Those revolts began in 2011 after street vendor Mohamed Bouazizi set himself ablaze in the Tunisian city of Sidi Bouzid in a protest against police harassment there. Unemployed graduates have long demonstrated for jobs in the Moroccan capital but their movement has gained strength since the start of the austerity program. Rabat police moved in quickly to spray the blind protesters with water cannon to dampen the fuel before chasing them away using batons. So far, Washington and the European Union (EU) have responded to President Putin’s annexation of Crimea this month with sanctions on dozens of individuals, most of them directly linked to Mr Putin’s actions in Crimea after his ally Viktor Yanukovych was ousted by protesters in Kiev. Those diplomatic moves have so far had little effect in Moscow, and Western leaders have faced criticism that they are not being tough enough in the face of a more muscular Russia. Mr Obama appeared to meet such criticism by making clear that the US is “the most powerful nation in the world” and one that other countries looked to in order to take the lead on global crises such as the conflict in Syria. Asked at a nuclear-security conference in The Hague whether Russia was now Washington’s top geopolitical foe, he replied: “America’s got a whole lot of challenges.” But Russia, he added, “is a regional power that is threatening some of its immediate neighbours, not out of strength but out of weakness. In its invasion and annexation of Crimea, Russia has seized 51 vessels belonging to the Ukrainian navy, according to information compiled by Dmitry Tymchuk, director of the Center of Military and Political Research in Kyiv. Among the Ukrainian vessels reportedly captured by the Russians are submarine Zaporizhia, management ship Slavutych, landing ship Konstantin Olshansky, landing ship Kirovohrad, minesweeper Chernihiv and minesweeper Cherkasy. The Cherkasy was the last of the ships to have been overtaken following weeks of threats and ultimatums to surrender. It was finally chased down and overtaken by the Russian navy on March 25 after failing to slip past a blockade of two ships intentionally sunk by the Russians to trap it and other vessels in a narrow gulf, keeping them from escaping into the Black Sea.

South Korea’s defence ministry said both missiles flew 650 kilometres (400 miles) into the Sea of Japan, upping the ante after a series of short-range missile and rocket launches by the North in recent weeks. A ministry spokesman said the missiles were believed to be Rodong variants, which are considered medium-range at their maximum reach of between 1,000 and 1,500 kilometres. China for the first time will likely have subs equipped with long-range nuclear missiles later this year, part of an increasingly potent submarine fleet, a top US officer said Tuesday, The head of US Pacific Command, Admiral Samuel Locklear, said the latest class of Chinese subs would be armed with a new ballistic missile with an estimated range of 4,000 nautical miles (7,500 kilometers). “This will give China its first credible sea-based nuclear deterrent, probably before the end of 2014,” Locklear told the Senate Armed Services Committee. Locklear was referring to the production of China’s JIN-class nuclear powered ballistic missile submarine and the new JL-2 missile on board the vessel. “China’s advance in submarine capabilities is significant. They possess a large and increasingly capable submarine force,” the admiral said. In October, Chinese state media for the first time showed images of the country’s nuclear-powered submarines, touting it as a “credible second-strike nuclear capability.” Locklear said China’s submarine modernization effort was impressive. “I think they’ll have in the next decade or so a fairly well modernized force of probably 60 to 70 submarines which is a lot of submarines for a regional power,” he said. China now has five nuclear attack submarines, four nuclear ballistic missile submarines, and 53 diesel attack submarines, according to Jess Karotkin of the Office of Naval Intelligence.

The move follows weeks of violence around anti-government protests that have killed 36 people in the nation’s worst unrest for a decade. In recent years, Venezuela’s socialist government has routinely accused its rivals of scheming to seize power by force and assassinate its leaders, although it has rarely followed up with concrete proof of such headline-grabbing claims. “Last night we captured three generals … who tried to raise the air force against the legitimate, constitutional government,” President Nicolas Maduro said on state TV during a meeting with South American foreign ministers in Caracas. He did not name the officers, but said the plot was revealed by colleagues of the generals who were “alarmed” when they heard of the conspiracy. The three were now in custody of military courts. “This group has direct links with sectors of the opposition. Bahraini forces have once again attacked anti-regime protesters as demonstrations continue in various parts of the country. On Wednesday, demonstrations against the unrelenting crackdown on pro-democracy uprising continued in several villages across the tiny Persian Gulf country. Anti-regime demonstrations were also held in the villages of A’ali, Samahich, and Diraz, as well as on the island of Sitra, east of the capital Manama. According to reports, Bahraini riot police fired tear gas and stun grenades to disperse protesters in the village of al-Aker. The protesters reportedly expressed solidarity with detainees, condemning the “unjust sentences” against them. Almost daily protests have been held against the Al Khalifa regime since February 2011, when thousands of pro-democracy protesters took to the streets, calling for the royal family to leave power.
